ADM stops carbon injection as its Decatur facility remains under federal scrutiny

Last week, company identified ‘anomaly’ in monitoring well

After identifying an underground carbon dioxide leak earlier this year, agribusiness giant ADM found a further “anomaly” in one of the wells at its Decatur carbon dioxide sequestration plant last week.

ADM has temporarily paused carbon dioxide injections as it conducts additional testing, according to company spokesperson Jackie Anderson. Carbon sequestration, an emerging technology that pumps liquified carbon dioxide deep underground for longterm storage, is hailed by some as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from high-emission industries like soy processing. But others view the practice as more dangerous than beneficial.

As part of the company’s “ongoing diagnostic efforts,” it found evidence of brine – salty water – moving between the underground rock formations it uses for carbon dioxide storage, according to a letter from ADM to the U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency.

This creates the potential for other underground material to escape its containment zones, although the company’s letter said it has not collected any data indicating that has happened.

“There is no impact to the surface or groundwater sources, nor any threat to public health,” Anderson said in an email statement. “We notified the U.S. EPA about this matter, and we’re conducting additional diagnostic tests in consultation with U.S. EPA and external experts. We will share additional information as we learn more.”

The company was already under the close watch of federal regulators after the EPA alleged ADM violated federal law in its handling of a leak of carbon dioxide earlier this year.

That leak resulted in 8,000 metric tons of liquid carbon dioxide escaping the underground rock formation where it was supposed to be stored. That liquified carbon dioxide remains underground and the EPA says nothing so far has suggested there is a threat to drinking water in the area.

But, on its website, the EPA notes that public water systems have been advised

to monitor water for taste and odor.

That event has also resulted in a proposed consent order which would require ADM to take new measures to comply with both its EPA permit and federal law. These measures include expanded monitoring and taking new actions to address any fluids that have migrated.

The EPA is now accepting public comments on the matter through Oct. 21 before potentially issuing a binding order.

The situation has sparked renewed calls for tighter restrictions on carbon capture projects in the state, and particularly in this part of central Illinois.

After lawmakers in Springfield passed legislation instituting new regulations for carbon capture and sequestration projects, some said they didn’t go far enough in protecting the Mahomet Aquifer – the drinking water source for many in the region.

ADM’s project is largely exempted from the new regulations and Decatur sits south of the aquifer, but environmental activists say the leak should act as a wake-up call.

Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, filed legislation last month to ban carbon sequestration development that “overlies, underlies, or passes through” an aquifer that is the sole-source of drinking water for a community.

“The leaks at ADM’s facility should serve as a red flag to lawmakers,” Pam Richart, co-director of Eco-Justice Collaborative and supporter of the recent legislation, said. “We can’t afford to wait for a disaster. Legislators need to act now and pass the ban on carbon sequestration beneath the Mahomet Aquifer.”

That legislation could be considered as early as November, when lawmakers are scheduled to return to Springfield before next year’s spring session begins in January.

Daytripping

Kettle Moraine scenic drive

The ultimate leaf peep

One of the great pleasures of fall is to take a ride and admire the beautiful autumn leaves. The season is short (and we all know what comes next).

One of the most impressive routes we have found locally for viewing autumn leaves is the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive in Wisconsin. The hilly, wellpaved, 115-mile drive starts just south of Whitewater Lake in Walworth County and continues northeastward to Elkhart Lake, northwest of Sheboygan. You’ll see a varied topography, with many forests, prairies, lakes, and billions of multicolored autumn leaves. The route utilizes state, county, and local roads, with many scenic twists and turns. Drive the entire route or only a portion. Nearby freeways provide a fast alternative for the trip back home.

Thousands of years ago, the Midwest was covered in a great sheet of ice known as the Wisconsin Glaciation. As the glaciers began to melt, giant glacial lobes formed. One of these lobes formed

Lake Michigan. The next lobe to the west is responsible for Green Bay and Lake Winnebago.

During the melt. the Green Bay and Lake Michigan lobes collided. Between these lobes, great amounts of sediment were deposited, forming what is known as the Kettle Moraine.

At over 100 miles long, the Kettle Moraine is considered to be one of the most definitive moraines in North America, and it has some of the world’s finest glacial landforms. The moraine is about 100 to 300 feet higher than the surrounding countryside and is about 1 to 10 miles wide.

In the early 1940s, the Kettle Moraine Committee of the Milwaukee Chapter of the Izaack Walton League promoted the development of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The committee discussed designating a scenic drive through the length of the Kettle Moraine. The drive would be easily accessible from as many large cities as possible and provide a scenic route that people could use to spend a day seeing the natural features of the Kettle Moraine region.

In 1946, to find the route with the most scenic beauty, every road in the

entire Kettle Moraine area was driven. The final route was approved in 1948, and the predecessors of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources jointly designed the green acorn sign to mark the drive. The first paving project was completed in 1950.

The drive runs through the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which is administered by the Wisconsin DNR, and is comprised of both North and South Units, as well as some other state properties in between. There is no charge for through traffic to travel along the Scenic Drive.

You’ll want to choose a sunny day for your trip. Remember, leaves change sooner in Wisconsin, particularly up north, than they do in Illinois. And rural areas typically change sooner than urban areas. Peak times can vary from year to year. Moister years and early frosts are also a factor. Consider checking fall color reports before setting out.

Although there is generally more traffic on the weekends, the drive is still not crowded. In most places, it is a two-lane, relaxing drive. The route avoids cities and villages. The most built-up part of the route is through Delafield, which is not

very congested. You’ll find refreshments and other travel needs nearby.

Your drive starts at State Park Road and Kettle Moraine Drive. To get there, take Interstate 43 to U.S, 14. Take 14 north and follow Wisconsin 89 north to Townline Road. Turn right and proceed to Kettle Moraine Drive, where you turn left. You are now on the Scenic Drive.

One drawback to this route is that, while the drive is marked with green signs bearing the outline of an acorn, sometimes the marker is missing. Unfortunately, there are no GPS directions available. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has a trail map and driving instructions available at https:// dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/kmscenicdrive. You might consider printing these out.

If you miss a turn, the good news is that most of the roads in the area are scenic anyway, and it’s an easy matter to get back on the right road by following the line of hills to the northeast. While we wish the DNR would review the route and replace any missing signs, the inconvenience is a fairly minor nuisance.

Nobel Prize

Nobel Prize in medicine honors 2 scientists for their discovery of microRNA

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Two scientists won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine on Monday for their discovery of microRNA, tiny bits of genetic material that serve as on and off switches inside cells that help control what the cells do and when they do it.

If scientists can better understand how they work and how to manipulate them, it could one day lead to powerful treatments for diseases like cancer.

The work by Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun is “proving to be fundamentally important for how organisms develop and function,” according to a panel that awarded the prize in Stockholm.

NEED CASH? NEEDCASH?

Ambros and Ruvkun were initially interested in genes that control the timing of different genetic developments, ensuring that cell types develop at the right time.

Their discovery ultimately “revealed a new dimension to gene regulation, essential for all complex life forms,” the panel said.

What is the Nobel Prize for?

RNA is best known for carrying instructions for how to make proteins from DNA in the nucleus of the cell to tiny cellular factories that actually build the proteins. MicroRNA does not make proteins, but helps to control what cells are doing, including switching on and off critical genes that make proteins.

Last year’s Nobel for medicine went to scientists who discovered how to manipulate one of those types of RNA, known as messenger RNA or mRNA, now used to make vaccines for COVID-19.

Ambros’ and Ruvkun’s revolutionary discovery was initially made in worms; they set out to identify why some kinds of cells didn’t develop in two mutant strains of worms commonly used as a research model in science.

“Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms, including humans,” according to the citation explaining the importance of their work.

That mechanism has been at work for hundreds of millions of years and has enabled evolution of complex organisms,

it said.

Ambros, currently a professor of natural science at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, performed the research at Harvard University. Ruvkun’s research was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he’s a professor of genetics.

Why does microRNA matter?

The study of microRNA has opened up approaches to treating diseases like cancer because it helps regulate how genes work in our cells, said Dr. Claire Fletcher, a lecturer in molecular oncology at Imperial College London.

Fletcher said there were two main areas where microRNA could be helpful: in developing drugs to treat diseases and in serving as possible indicators of diseases, by tracking microRNA levels in the body.

“If we take the example of cancer, we’ll have a particular gene working overtime, it might be mutated and working in overdrive,” said Fletcher. She said scientists might one day be able to use microRNA to stop such effects.

Eric Miska, a geneticist at Cambridge University, said the discovery by Ambros and Ruvkun came as a complete surprise, overturning what scientists had long understood about how cells work.

Their discovery of microRNA shocked many scientists, Miska said, explaining that such small bits of genetic material had never been seen before. The tiny fragments of RNA — the human genome has at least 800 — were later found to play critical roles in how our bodies develop.

Miska said there is ongoing work on the role of microRNA in infectious diseases like hepatitis and that it might also be helpful in treating neurological diseases.

Fletcher said the most advanced studies to date are reviewing how microRNA approaches might help treat skin cancer, but no drugs have yet been approved. She predicted that might happen in the coming years, adding that most treatments at the moment target cell proteins.

“If we can intervene at the microRNA level, it opens up a whole new way of us developing medicines,” she said.

How did Gary Ruvkun and Victor Ambros react?

The phone call from the Nobel panel is often a surprise, but there are certain signs that recipients and their families pick up on.

“Well, when a phone rings at 4:30 in

the morning. ... It never happens here,” Ruvkun said.

“Natasha actually answered it,” Ruvkun added, referring to his wife. “And she goes: ‘He has a Swedish accent.’” It took a little longer to rouse Ambros.

“Somebody called my son, who called my wife as my phone was downstairs,” he said.

Ruvkun knew immediately the impact the award would have on his life.

“Well, I just kept repeating in my mind, this changes everything because you know, the Nobel is just mythic in how it transforms the life of people who are selected,” Ruvkun said. “The Nobel Prize is a recognition that’s sort of 100 times as much press and celebration as any other award. So, it’s not part of a continuum. It’s a quantum leap.”

Going to pick up his award in December will be the third time he has been to a Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm after attending to watch his mentor Robert Horvitz receive the 2002 award and then his buddy Jack Szostak, who won in 2009.

“There’s a trip coming up. It will be the third, possibly the best,” Ruvkun said.

Ambros said he didn’t expect the award as he felt that the Nobel committee has already singled out RNA in the 2006 prize that went to his friends Andrew Fire and Craig Mello.

“It represents the recognition of how wonderful and unexpected discoveries come from a curiosity in basic science financed by taxpayer money. It’s a vitally important, probably the most important message, that this investment really pays off,” he said.

Last year, the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine went to Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman for discoveries that enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 that were critical in slowing the pandemic.

The prize carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million) from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.

Nobel announcements continue with the physics prize on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced Friday and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences on Oct. 14.

Mideast War Anniversary

A year after the Hamas attack shattered their community, going home still feels impossible

KFAR AZA, Israel (AP) — On a sun-dappled day in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, Liora Eilon stood where her son was killed. She picked up a figurine from among the belongings scattered around an abandoned home nearby.

“Every time we come here, Tal leaves us a little message,” the 71-year-old said, turning over the plastic soldier in her hands.

It has been a year since Hamas militants stormed into this community and killed Tal Eilon, 46, the commander of the civilian defense squad.

Liora Eilon now lives in a college dorm in Israel’s north and wonders if she’ll ever return home to this place, seared into Israeli history for that day of mass death, when militants killed some 1,200 people and took around 250 others hostage. The attack sparked an Israeli campaign in Gaza that has killed more than 41,600 Palestinians.

“How can I trust the government who abandoned me here, who betrayed me, promised me that my family was safe here?” she asked.

About 50 of Kfar Aza’s 1,000 residents have returned, living among houses burned by explosives and reduced to rubble. Others are scattered around the country. The Associated Press spoke to a dozen who shared feelings of vulnerability to future attack and misgivings about Israel’s military, government and Palestinians in Gaza.

Some wondered whether such a place could ever be lived in again.

“Are we going to live inside a memorial? Are we going to see a plaque every few meters, he was killed here and he was killed here?” asked Zohar Shpack, 58.

‘It’s still the seventh of October’

The land still holds traces of the day. Gardener Rafael Friedman still finds teeth and bones in Kfar Aza’s soil — likely remnants of Hamas militants killed in the fighting.

Kfar Aza has always been close-knit. Now photos of slain young people are posted everywhere.

The government says it will rebuild. Meanwhile, it’s constructing pre-fabricated houses for residents in another kibbutz, where two-thirds of the community plan to move.

Some said they weren’t sure they’d ever feel safe returning to Kfar Aza.

They first want to know why it took the military so long to respond to the attack. The military launched an investigation but has not released results. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has brushed off calls for accountability until war’s end.

Simona Steinbrecher feels too frozen in time to make a decision. Her daughter, Doron, is among 66 Israelis still held captive. Hamas is believed to hold the bodies of 35 others.

The 65-year-old Steinbrecher last saw her daughter in a Hamas propaganda video.

“Without Doron, it’s still the seventh of October,” her mother said. “And we won’t go home until she’s home.”

A military collapse

Many residents of Kfar Aza will boycott the government’s ceremony commemorating Oct. 7. They will instead hold a small tribute and lower the kibbutz flag to half-mast.

Residents said they admire the troops who fought that day but are furious at the military higher-ups, blaming them for a command structure that collapsed when the kibbutz needed it most.

Eilon is gripped with fury and astonishment when recounting the 35 hours of horror her family endured.

When the sirens blared that Saturday morning, Eilon thought it would take the army minutes to arrive. It took hours.

Her family scrambled into their safe room. A son and daughter muscled the door shut against gunmen trying to get inside. Granddaughters, Gali and Mika, hid under the bed. Eilon got a message saying her son Tal had gone out to fight.

The five huddled in the saferoom, hearing the attackers’ shouts and gunfire, not knowing whether Tal was dead or alive. Israeli troops finally gained control of their house.

Still, the troops didn’t evacuate the family. It was only on Sunday afternoon, as militants were hiding out in the house again, that soldiers hustled them out.

As she ran, Eilon saw a tank swivel its cannon at her house. It fired, collapsing her home on the militants inside.

Soon after being rescued, Eilon learned Tal was dead.

“I’d known it all along,” she said. “But some part of me was hoping that he was injured, that he was unconscious in some hospital.”

‘They

could have saved them’

As the battle raged, some residents were sped away in army jeeps. Hanan Dann recounted passing soldiers outside the kibbutz, who looked like they were waiting for orders.

“I wanted to say, there’s fighting inside still, there’re people dying,” he said. “They could have saved them.”

Soldiers and militants fought in Kfar Aza for days. In the end, militants killed 64 civilians and 22 soldiers, dragging 19

hostages into Gaza.

Nearby stands a decrepit water tower, a remnant of Be’erot Yitzhak, a kibbutz abandoned after a deadly 1948 Egyptian attack during the war around Israel’s creation.

“Will that be what Kfar Aza looks like 10 years from now?” asked Dann. “Just a stop on the highway I can point out to my kids?”

Even those who want to go back know Kfar Aza will never be the same. Shpack said he understands why no one would bring a child here.

“Even once the bombs end, how can you

raise him here? How do you explain what happened here?”

For some, the kibbutz’s fate is tied to Gaza. As long as there is no peace agreement with Palestinians, they say they’ll find themselves again under attack.

Eilon wants a new government that will talk to the Palestinians to find “some arrangement for us to live together on the same land.”

“I’m dreaming for the day with an open fence from here to the sea, with two people living together.”

Entry Level

One of the questions we get at the University of Illinois Extension office during the fall is what can someone still do in their vegetable garden between now and winter. With a lack of rain so far in October, this may mean that a lot of your priorities are in shutting down the garden and getting in the final harvest.

Horseradish can still be harvested. You want to do this before the ground freezes and usually after a hard frost (air temperatures near 28 F). Horseradish is a perennial plant but unlike rhubarb

Energy & Environment

Last minute vegetable garden tasks

or asparagus, it requires the removal of the entire plant in order to harvest. To harvest, cut back the leaves to the soil surface, using a shovel/fork try to lift the plant from the edges with a goal of taking the main roots. You want to leave behind smaller ones that are pencil width. Horseradish can then be stored in a fridge/ cool place unwashed and then used for your cooking.

Another task is to plant garlic. Garlic is planted now for harvest at the end of June 2025. You’ll plant a single clove, double it’s height, into the soil which will then produce a bulb to harvest next

year. Space these cloves 6 inches apart in a row and 12-36 inches between rows. We typically recommend Hardneck varieties as they do well in our area. Once planted in the soil, you need to cover the garlic with 4-6 inches of straw mulch. I have still not planted my garlic but plan to in the next two weeks.

Since September and the start of October have remained warm, you may have crops still growing. I have removed most of my summer vegetable plants but still am allowing for peppers to ripen. I also have smaller pie pumpkins on a vine that I hope will be ready the end of

the month. In order to get these crops closer to ripening, you might consider the removal of flowers that then could allow for the plant to focus on the crop that has already been pollinated. For pumpkins, consider cutting the vine back close to where your remaining unripe pumpkins currently exist. While these actions can sometimes expedite the ripening process, you may need to water these plants due to the lack of rain in our region.

Hurricane Helene recovery faces transformer delays

According to Carbon Brief, Helene, a category four storm, is the second deadliest Hurricane to hit the U.S. after Katrina. Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia were the most severely impacted states. As of October 5, 227 deaths had been reported and the toll is expected to increase.

The economic losses and damages from the storm are estimated to range between $36 to $160 billion. Bridges collapsed, lakes filled with debris, roads washed away and buildings destroyed or flooded and a small town flattened illustrating the impacts.

The event has become caught up in presidential politics regarding climate change and whether government officials were properly prepared to respond to the storm. Reports indicate there are national guard troops there along with federal workers and federal troops to provide food, water and assistance in cleaning

up the impacted communities.

Some long term climate implications are being raised regarding such storms. Carbon Brief cites Dr. Zeke Hausfather on his Climate Brink blog that he expects a global increase in such heavy precipitation events as moisture in the air is expected to increase by up to 7% per degree of global warming. The increase in heavy precipitation contributes to damage from such storms.

What is surprising regarding the impact of the storm is that the flooding from the intense rainfall reached far inland. It has been estimated that half of the loss of electrical power has occurred in mountainous area of western North Carolina. Some 400,000 residents in the area were without electrical power. Poles, lines, and substations need to be replaced or rebuilt to restore electrical service.

Of particular concern is the potential loss of distribution transformers located in the 360 substations flooded. The substations step down the voltage sent to them from the utility generators to a

level that is safe to send to communities for their use. Officials have indicated they need to wait until the flooded substations can be pumped out and the equipment is dried out and inspected to determine if they can be put back into service.

There is some uncertainty regarding how long it will take to restore electrical service in the areas where the substations were flooded. There already exists a transformer shortage delaying the speed that the overall electric grid can be returned to service, The pre-existing shortage is related to raw material shortages, existing supply chain disruptions, backlogs on order, geopolitical constraints and worker shortage.

The National Renewable Energy Lab was commissioned to do a study on the category of transformers that step down the medium level voltage to the service level voltage for end use in electrical consumption in buildings and homes. Utilities are waiting up to two years for transformers in that category. The study estimated that between 60-80 million

distribution transformers were in service in the U.S. in 2021. As the demand for electricity continues to increase it is projected that a 160% to 260% Increase over the 2021 level will be required by 2050. In addition to the overall increase in transformer numbers, it is expected the type of transformers utilities demand will change. The changes include the an increased in demand for larger transformers as electrification accelerates, and an increase in demand of pad mount, dry-type and submersible transformers. Due to the increase in renewable power production there will also be an increase in demand for transformers to step up the voltage produced from renewable energy resources.

From an environmental and energy perspective such increases in demand will require more energy and resources to meet the demand. It does serve as a reminder of the environmental challenge of maintaining the existing infrastructure while continuing the pursuit of economic growth.
