Illinois Democrats maintain control of state government
By Jerry Nowicki Capitol News Illinois jnowicki@capitolnewsillinois.comSPRINGFIELD – As votes continued to be tallied Wednesday, returns showed Illinois Democrats would hold every statewide elected office and maintain superma jorities in the General Assembly while extending their majority on the Illinois Supreme Court.
After a fiery election night speech in which Gov. JB Pritzker excoriated the Republican Party as “unwilling to expel the extremists in their midst,” he gave an upbeat news conference about his plans for a second term Wednesday at the Marriott Marquis hotel in Chicago that was the site of his election night party the day prior.
“The election yesterday was a chance for Illinoisans to decide who we want to be,” Pritzker said, citing his administration’s acceptance of asylum seekers, support for mental health and substance use treat ment, protection of women’s rights, civil rights and voting rights, and renewable energy policies.
“Well, Illinoisans made their decision – a decision that we should be a beacon of hope and opportunity and caring,” he added.
Pritzker’s second-term task will be made easier by the success of Democrats in the General Assembly.
In the Senate, it appeared Republicans would gain at least two seats, decreasing the Democratic supermajority from 41 members to 38-20, with at least one race too close to call.
Senate Minority Leader Dan McConchie, R-Hawthorn Woods, celebrated the wins but lamented that they were gained through a “rigged system,” a reference to Democrats’ recent redrawing of district lines to maximize their chances of main taining their majorities.
“Thousands of voters across the state have said ‘enough’ to the Democrats’ call for more power. Thanks to their resiliency, the Illinois Senate will be adding to the strength of the caucus and will continue to serve as strong voices for the people of Illinois, who are dissatisfied with the failed policies that have come out of Springfield and want to see change,” he said.
Republicans had viewed taking the state Supreme Court as their best bet at enacting redistricting reform for future elections, but the two seats that were up for vote Tuesday both went to Democrats.
Judge Elizabeth Rochford defeated former Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran in the 2nd District by nearly nine percentage points. Mary Kay O’Brien, in the 3rd District, led by about 8,000 votes over Republican incum bent Michael Burke. Her campaign said on Twitter that Burke had conceded, although
an email to Burke’s campaign to confirm was not returned Wednesday afternoon.
That would put the court majority at 5-2 in favor of Democrats and would create the first majority-woman court, also by 5-2 margins.
As of Wednesday, Democrats appeared poised to extend their supermajority from 73 of the 118 members of the House of Representatives to 77, with a few races too close to call.
The lack of success in that cham ber prompted a Wednesday morning announcement from Rep. Jim Durkin, the Western Springs Republican who has served as House minority leader since 2013, that he would not seek another term leading the House Republicans.
“I am proud of the work the House Republican caucus has accomplished under my tenure, and thank everyone who played a part along the way,” Durkin said in a news release. “I began this journey as a voice of moderation and conclude this journey the same way I started, a voice of moderation.”
Moderation is a trait of the Republican Party which Pritzker, in his election night speech, contended no longer exists.
He took square aim at former President Donald Trump and those who sought and accepted his endorsement. But he didn’t mention his vanquished opponent Darren Baily in his election night address.
“And don’t claim that the Republican Party is being labeled unfairly. Because here we are, two years into cleaning up the wreckage of Donald Trump’s presidency, poised to watch this man announce his return to national politics within days,” Pritzker said of Trump on election night. “You know why? Because GOP politicians, with the exception of only a few souls, are too cowardly, too simpering, to support the best interests of the nation because they’re afraid of being called insulting nicknames by a whiny bully.”
Asked about the speech Wednesday, he again denied any interest in a 2024 pres idential run and said he planned to serve his four-year term as governor.
Aside from the national lens, the speech centered on some of Pritzker’s major first-term accomplishments, like legal izing recreational marijuana, raising the minimum wage, balancing the budget and presiding over six credit upgrades between the three major ratings agencies.
“We’ve got to stop being irresponsible about our fiscal situation in the state –like my predecessor was, and like was proposed by my opponent during this latest campaign – and actually focus on solving the real fiscal challenges of Illinois,” Pritzker said Wednesday. “I know that
sometimes sounds boring to people when you talk about budgets, paying debt. …But I think it’s vitally important that all of us focus on that in both parties.”
Pritzker said many of his first-term accomplishments, including passing a capital infrastructure plan and approving the budget, received bipartisan support after negotiations with Durkin and others. While the relationship was rockier after one year, Pritzker said he was open to working with Republicans in his second term.
Two of Durkin’s top lieutenants – Reps. Dan Brady, of Normal, and Tom Demmer, of Dixon – will also be leaving the General Assembly after unsuccessful bids at state wide office. At least four others from his leadership team had either chosen not to seek another term or lost primary or general elections.
When the governor was asked about Durkin and whether he worried a more conservative replacement would rise in the ranks, he said Durkin was “probably a loss for the Republicans.”
“I’m only concerned if someone takes the job who’s unwilling to sit down and actually talk about, you know, what we might do together?” he said. “If they’re unwilling to talk, if they reject the idea of bipartisanship, that would not be good for the state of Illinois.”
As for other races, the Democrats maintained the offices of comptroller, treasurer, attorney general and secretary of state. Each of the Democrats – incum bents Susana Mendoza, Michael Frerichs and Kwame Raoul and newcomer Alexi Giannoulias – were leading by double digits as of Wednesday.
Union groups were also claiming victory on a constitutional amendment guarantee ing a right to collectively bargain in Illinois. That race was too early to call, however, due to the complex nature of passing an amendment.
It had about 59 percent of the vote with 90 percent of precincts reporting, which is short of the three-fifths needed for passage. But an amendment can also pass if supported by more than half of those voting in the election, so the threshold needed is likely to be lower than 60 percent.
As of Wednesday afternoon, however, it was unclear what the final threshold and vote tallies would be, as the Illinois State Board of Elections is set to certify results on Dec. 5.

Zelenskyy calls liberation of Kherson ‘beginning of the end’
By Sam Mednick Associated PressKHERSON, Ukraine (AP) — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy triumphantly walked the streets of the newly liber ated city of Kherson on Monday, hailing Russia’s withdrawal as the “beginning of the end of the war,” but also acknowl edging the heavy price Ukrainian troops are paying in their grinding effort to push back the invaders.
The retaking of Kherson was one of Ukraine’s biggest successes in the nearly 9-month-old war, dealing another sting ing blow to the Kremlin. It could serve as a springboard for more advances into occupied territory.
President Joe Biden called it a “signif icant victory” for Ukraine.
“I can do nothing but applaud the courage, determination and capacity of the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian military,” he said on the sidelines of a Group of 20 summit in Indonesia. “I mean, they’ve really been amazing. And I think it’s hard to tell at this point exactly what it means. ... But I’ve been very clear that we’re going to continue to provide the capability for the Ukrainian people to defend themselves.”
Large parts of eastern and southern Ukraine are still under Russian control, and the city of Kherson itself remains within reach of Moscow’s shells and missiles. Heeavy fighting continued elsewhere in the country.
In Kherson, Zelenskyy awarded medals to soldiers and posed with them for selfies while striking a defiant note.
“This is the beginning of the end of the war,” he said. “We are step by step coming to all the temporarily occupied territories.”
But he also grimly noted that the fight ing “took the best heroes of our country.”
The end of Russia’s occupation of the city — the only provincial capital its forces have seized since the February invasion — has sparked days of cele bration. But with winter approaching, its residents are without heat, water and electricity, and short on food and medicine. Zelenskyy added that the city is laced with booby traps and mines. And Ukrainian authorities say there are signs of atrocities emerging, just as in other liberated areas.
The Institute for the Study of War said Ukraine has won “an important victory” in recapturing the city and other areas west of the Dnieper River, but the Washington-based think tank noted that “it has by no means liberated the
minimum territory essential to its future security and economic survival.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, while visiting The Hague, warned that “we should not make the mistake of underestimating Russia.”
“The Russian armed forces retain significant capability as well as a large number of troops, and Russia has demonstrated their willingness to bear significant losses,” he said.
In Ankara, Turkey, CIA Director Bill Burns met with his Russian intelligence counterpart, Sergei Naryshkin to under score the consequences if Moscow were to deploy a nuclear weapon in Ukraine, according to a White House National Security Council official.
The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Burns and Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s SVR spy agency, did not discuss settlement of the war. Their meeting was the high est-ranking face-to-face engagement between U.S. and Russian officials since before Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion. Ukrainian officials were briefed ahead of Burns’ travel to Turkey, the official said.
While U.S. officials for months have warned of the prospect that Russia could use weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine amid battlefield setbacks, Biden administration officials have repeatedly said nothing has changed in U.S. intelli gence assessments to suggest that Putin has imminent plans to deploy nuclear weapons, according to U.S. officials.
Zelenskyy’s trip to Kherson was another is a series of unexpected visits to front-line areas at crucial moments of the war. This one was laden with both symbolism and the common touch — clearly aimed at boosting morale of soldiers and civilians alike.
In video posted by a presidential aide, a visibly moved Zelenskyy stood with his hand on his heart and sang the national anthem as troops saluted and stood at attention and a soldier steadily raised the yellow-and-blue Ukrainian flag.
People with flags draped around their shoulders cheered, cried and shouted in gratitude as Zelenskyy walked by.
“It’s amazing. We’ve been waiting for him for nine months. Thank you,” said resident Danila Yuhrenko.
Serhii Yukhmchuk, 47, said he and his wife spent the occupation mostly at home to avoid interacting with the Russians. They and others silently protested by refusing to use the Russian ruble as
currency in the city, he said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on Zelenskyy’s visit, saying only that “you know that it is the territory of the Russian Federation.” Russia illegally annexed the Kherson region and three other provinces earlier this year.
In his Sunday night address, Zelenskyy said without giving details that “inves tigators have already documented more than 400 Russian war crimes, and the bodies of both civilians and military personnel have been found.”
“In the Kherson region, the Russian army left behind the same atrocities as in other regions of our country,” he said. “We will find and bring to justice every murderer. Without a doubt.”
Residents said Russian troops plundered the city as they departed last week. They also wrecked key infrastructure before retreating across the wide Dnieper River to its east bank.
One Ukrainian official described the situation in Kherson as “a humanitarian catastrophe.”
Reconnecting the electricity supply is the priority, regional Gov. Yaroslav Yanushevych said.
The arrival of winter is making the situation more difficult, with Stoltenberg saying that Putin is aiming “to leave Ukraine cold and dark this winter.”
Biden said he expected things to slow down somewhat militarily “because of the winter months and the inability to move as easily around the country.”
In the past two months, Ukraine’s military claimed to have retaken dozens of towns and villages north of the city of Kherson, which is a key gateway to the Crimean Peninsula to the south — a region illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
But the grinding war continued — with shelling, civilian casualties and each side reporting gains.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had completely captured the village of Pavlivka in the eastern Donetsk region.
Multiple Ukrainian officials have reported heavy battles in the area in recent weeks but did not confirm the loss of Pavlivka.
In Luhansk, another eastern region illegally annexed by Moscow, Kyiv’s forces have retaken 12 settlements, said regional Gov. Serhiy Haidai.
Associated Press writers John Leicester in Kyiv, Hanna Arhirova in Odesa, Ukraine, and Aamer Madhani in Washington contributed.
Turkey detains Syrian suspect in deadly Istanbul bombing
BY MEHMET GUZEL AND SUZAN FRASER ASSOCIATED PRESSISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish police said Monday they have detained a Syrian woman with suspected links to Kurdish militants and that she confessed to planting a bomb that exploded on a bustling pedestrian avenue in Istanbul, killing six people and wounding several dozen others. Kurdish militants strongly denied any links to the bombing.
Sunday’s explosion hit Istiklal Avenue, a popular thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants that leads to Taksim Square.
“A little while ago, the person who left the bomb was detained by our Istanbul Police Department teams,” Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced early Monday. Police later identifi ed the suspect as Ahlam Albashir, a Syrian citizen.
The Istanbul Police Department said videos from around 1,200 security cameras were reviewed and raids were carried out at 21 locations. At least 46 other people were also detained for questioning.
The suspected allegedly departed the scene in a taxi after leaving TNT-type explosives on the crowded avenue, police said.
Sunday’s explosion was a shocking reminder of the anxiety that gripped Turkey when such attacks were common. The country was hit by a string of deadly bombings between 2015 and 2017, some by the Islamic State group, others by Kurdish militants who seek increased autonomy or independence.
Police said the suspect told them during her interrogation that she had been trained as a “special intelligence ocer” by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, as well as the Syrian Kurdish group the Democratic Union Party and its armed wing. She entered Turkey illegally through the Syrian border town of Afrin, police said.
The Kurdistan Workers Party denied involvement in a statement, saying it did not target civilians. In Syria, the main Kurdish militia group, People’s Defense Units denied any links to the suspect. The group maintained that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was trying to gather international support for his plans to launch a new incursion into northern Syria ahead of next year’s elections.
Soylu said the suspect would have fled to neighboring Greece if she hadn’t been detained.
Earlier, Soylu said security forces
believe that instructions for the attack came from Kobani, the majority Kurdish city in northern Syria that borders Turkey. He said the attack would be avenged.
“We know what message those who carried out this action want to give us. We got this message,” Soylu said. “Don’t worry, we will pay them back heavily.”
Soylu also blamed the United States, claiming that a condolence message from the White House was akin to “a killer being fi rst to show up at a crime scene.” Turkey has been infuriated by U.S. support for Syrian Kurdish groups.
In its message, the White House said it strongly condemned the “act of violence” in Istanbul, adding: “We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our NATO ally (Turkey) in countering terrorism.”
Turkish television broadcast footage purporting to show the main suspect being detained at a house where she was allegedly hiding. It said police searching the house also seized large amounts of cash, gold and a gun.
The minister told reporters that Kurdish militants had allegedly given orders for the main suspect to be killed to avoid evidence being traced back to them.
Istanbul Gov. Ali Yerlikaya said of the 81 people hospitalized in the attack, 57 have been discharged. Six of the wounded were in intensive care and two of them were in life-threatening condition, he said. The six killed in the blast were members of three families and included children ages 9 and 15.
Funerals were held Monday for the six victims, including Adem Topkara and his wife Elif Topkara, who had left their two young children with their aunt and were taking a stroll down Istiklal at the time of the blast.
Istiklal Avenue was reopened to pedestrian trac at 6 a.m. Monday after police concluded inspections. People began leaving carnations at the site of the blast, while the street was decorated with hundreds of Turkish flags.
Mecid Bal, a 63-year-old kiosk owner, said his son was caught up in the blast and called him from the scene.
“Dad, there are dead and wounded lying on the ground. I was crushed when I stood up” to run, Bal quoted him as saying.
Restaurant worker Emrah Aydinoglu was talking on the phone when he heard the explosion.
“I looked out of the window and saw people running,” the 22-year-old said. “People were lying on the ground, already visible from the corner of the street (I was
in). They were trying to call (for help), whether it was an ambulance or the police. All of them were shrieking and crying.”
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, has fought an armed insurgency in Turkey since 1984. The confl ict has killed tens of thousands of people since then.
Ankara and Washington both consider the PKK a terrorist group, but they diverge on the issue of the Syrian Kurdish groups, which have fought against IS in Syria.
In recent years, Erdogan has led a broad crackdown on the militants as well as on Kurdish lawmakers and activists. Amid skyrocketing inflation and other economic troubles, Erdogan’s anti-terrorism campaign is a key rallying point for him before Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections next year.
Following the attacks between 2015 and 2017 that left more than 500 civilians and security personnel dead, Turkey launched
cross-border military operations into Syria and northern Iraq against Kurdish militants, while also cracking down on Kurdish politicians, journalists and activists at home.
“In nearly six years, we have not experienced a serious terrorist incident like the one we experienced yesterday evening in Istanbul. We are ashamed in front of our nation in this regard,” Soylu said.
Turkey’s media watchdog imposed restrictions on reporting on Sunday’s explosion — a move that bans the use of close-up videos and photos of the blast and its aftermath.
Access to Twitter and other social media sites was also restricted on Sunday.
Suzan Fraser reported from Ankara. Robert Badendieck in Istanbul, Hogir Al Abdo in Raqqa, Syria and Bassem Mroue in Beirut, contributed.
Making Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas a little cozier
By Paula Hendrickson Contributor
You might think you’ve never heard of Hallmark Channel’s annual Countdown to Christmas promotion, but you probably have. At the very least you’re likely aware that the channel airs it’s originally-produced Christmas movies from October into the new year. Love it or hate it, Countdown to Christmas is a longstanding TV tradition.Like any tradition, it is evolving. Not only has Hallmark’s new leadership begun working to make its offerings more inclusive and appealing to broader audiences, they’ve also launched a new initiative, Stitched With Love, in conjunc tion with Warm Up America. The plan is for knitters and crocheters to make blocks that will be pieced together to make
blankets that will be donated to women’s domestic violence shelters in Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Texas.
As an avid—okay, obsessive—knitter and crocheter, I’m making several blocks, and thought some other knitters and crocheters might like to participate, too.
There are two patterns for each craft: one is a beginners-level solid color 7-inch by 9-inch block, the other is a colorwork pattern than incorporates the Hallmark heart-and-crown logo. Go to https:// www.hallmarkchannel.com/stitchedwith-love to download the patterns. (The colorwork patterns are available both as written patterns and charts.)
For the Hallmark project, blocks must be made with red, green, pink, or teal worsted-weight acrylic yarn. You can make one or several, then mail them to:
Warm Up America!
Attn: Hallmark Sections 3740 N. Josey Ln., Ste 126 Carrollton, TX 75007
I didn’t see any deadline to complete the squares, but the sooner the better since winter is right around the corner.
The solid squares are a great way for new knitters and crocheters to hone their skills, and they’re small enough that they’re not too overwhelming or time consuming.
Stitched With Love by Hallmark isn’t Warm Up America’s only effort. As a non-profit group, Warm Up America is always in need of volunteer knitters and crocheters to help make blankets for people in need. If you want to donate or get involved, visit their website https:// warmupamerica.org.
A word of caution for those opting to make a colorwork block: Don’t work on it while watching a TV show you’re really focused on. Last night while watching HGTV’s Rehab Addict: Lake House Rescue, I miscounted by one stitch and had to tear out three rows at the top of the Hallmark heart.
The timing of Stitched With Love was perfect. Last weekend a package arrived from one of my cousins. Her mom passed away last month, and instead of donating Aunt Jan’s yarn to Goodwill or Salvation Army, she sent it to me in case I could use it. Included in the box of yarn were nearly full skeins of acrylic red and green worsted-weight yarn.
I might just need to turn on Hallmark channel and watch a Christmas movie or two and knit a few more blocks.
26 Artists reimagine chairs as art in Kortman Gallery holiday group exhibition
From Kortman GalleryChairs have been a part of every day life since the dawn of civilization. They have evolved from not only a purely functional piece of furniture, but also a statement of design, social strata, and comfort. For centuries the chair has appeared in works of art from ancient Egyptian scroll paintings to works by classical masters to modern day paintings and sculpture.
Kortman Gallery has invited 26 artists who work in different styles and media to create works of art inspired by the chair. The exhibition titled, “Sit. Chairs as Art” opens Friday, November 18th from 5:30 to 9pm in the downtown Rockford Kortman Gallery.
“All twenty-five of these imaginative, accomplished artists have created works that either visually depict a chair in a painting, ceramics, photography, or sculpture…and some are actually func tional chairs,” said gallery director Doc Slafkosky.
Clay artist Lynn Fischer-Carlson said she welcomes the challenge of creating a piece for a show that has a designated theme.
“It compels you to apply your artistic
skills often in different ways,” says Fischer-Carlson. “You want to participate in the theme without sacrificing your own aesthetic vision or style.”
One of the inspirations for this exhibi tion was to recognize the 20th anniver sary of the creation of “The Big Chair” by Rockford artist, Jim Julin who passed away in 2012.
“Jim created the chair for a Kortman Gallery exhibit in 2002,” said Slafkosky.
“He built the large scale sculpture to honor his Rockford Swedish furniture manufacturing heritage. The Big Chair was placed on the then downtown mall in front of our gallery. It was acquired by Lon and Dick Behr and donated to the Rockford Art Museum’s sculpture garden where it stands tall today on North Main Street.”
Participating artists include Zoa Ace, Stephen Warde Anderson, Lynn FischerCarlson, Molly Carter, Jesus Correa, John Deill, Michelle Dorr, Fatherless, Roni Golan, Laura Gomel, Brian Hierstein, Jane Peterson Hooker, Lisa Jimenez, Carrie Johnson, Jeremy Klonicki, Jenny Mathews, Robin McCauley, Nancie King Mertz, Valerie Olafson, Jacob Polhill,

Sam Bankman-Fried’s downfall sends shockwaves through crypto
By Ken Sweet Associated PressNEW YORK (AP) — Sam BankmanFried received numerous plaudits as he rapidly achieved superstar status as the head of cryptocurrency exchange FTX: the savior of crypto, the newest force in Democratic politics and potentially the world’s first trillionaire.
Now the comments about the 30-yearold Bankman-Fried range from bemused to hostile after FTX filed for bankruptcy protection Friday, leaving his investors and customers feeling duped and many others in the crypto world fearing the repercussions. Bankman-Fried himself could face civil or criminal charges.
“I’ve known him for a number of years and what just happened is just shocking,” said Jeremy Allaire, the co-founder and CEO of cryptocurrency company Circle.
Under Bankman-Fried, FTX quickly grew to be the third-largest exchange by volume. The stunning collapse of this nascent empire has sent tsunami-like waves through the cryptocurrency industry, which has seen a fair share of volatility and turmoil this year, including a sharp decline in price for bitcoin and other digital assets. For some, the events are reminiscent of the domino-like failures of Wall Street firms during the 2008 financial crisis, particularly now that supposedly healthy firms like FTX are failing.
One venture capital fund wrote down investments in FTX worth over $200 million. The cryptocurrency lender BlockFi paused client withdrawals Friday
after FTX sought bankruptcy protection. The Singapore-based exchange Crypto. com saw withdrawals increase this weekend for internal reasons but some of the action could be attributed to raw nerves from FTX.
“Sam what have you done?,” tweeted Sean Ryan Evans, host of the crypto currency podcast Bankless, after the bankruptcy filing.
Bankman-Fried and his company are under investigation by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The investigations likely center on the possibility that the firm may have used customers’ deposits to fund bets at Bankman-Fried’s hedge fund, Alameda Research, a violation of U.S. securities law.
“This is the direct result of a rogue actor breaking every single basic rule of fiscal responsibility,” said Patrick Hillman, chief strategy officer at Binance, FTX’s biggest competitor. Early last week Binance appeared ready to step in to bail out FTX, but backed away after a review of FTX’s books.
The ultimate impact of FTX’s bank ruptcy is uncertain, but its failure will likely result in the destruction of billions of dollars of wealth and even more skep ticism for cryptocurrencies at a time when the industry could use a vote of confidence.
“I care because it’s retail investors who suffer the most, and because too many people still wrongly associate bitcoin with the scammy ‘crypto’ space,” said Cory Klippsten, CEO of Swan Bitcoin, who
for months raised concerns about FTX’s business model. Klippsten is publicly enthusiastic about bitcoin but has long had deep skepticism about other parts of the crypto universe.
Bankman-Fried founded FTX in 2019, and it grew rapidly — it was recently valued at $32 billion. The son of Stanford University professors, who was known to play the video game “League of Legends” during meetings, Bankman-Fried attracted investments from the highest echelons of Silicon Valley.
Sequoia Capital, which over the decades invested in Apple, Cisco, Google, Airbnb and YouTube, described their meeting with Bankman-Fried as likely “talking to the world’s first trillionaire.” Several of Sequoia’s partners became enthusiastic about Bankman-Fried following a Zoom meeting in 2021. After several more meetings, Sequoia decided to invest in the company.
“I don’t know how I know, I just do. SBF is a winner,” wrote Adam Fisher, a business journalist who wrote a profile of Bankman-Fried for the firm, referring to Bankman-Fried by his popular online moniker. The article, published in late September, was removed from Sequoia’s website.
Sequoia has written down its $213 million in investments to zero. A pension fund in Ontario, Canada wrote down its investment to zero as well.
In a terse statement, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Fund said, “Naturally, not all of the investments in this early-stage asset class perform to expectations.”
But up until last week, Bankman-Fried was seen as a white knight for the indus try. Whenever the crypto industry had one of its crises, Bankman-Fried was the person likely to fly in with a rescue plan. When online trading platform Robinhood was in financial straits earlier this year — collateral damage from the decline in stock and crypto prices — BankmanFried jumped in to buy a stake in the company as a sign of support.
When Bankman-Fried bought up the assets of bankrupt crypto firm Voyager Digital for $1.4 billion this summer, it brought a sense of relief to Voyager account holders, whose assets has been frozen since its own failure. That rescue is now in question.
FTX’s failure started after the crypto currency news outlet CoinDesk published a story, based on a leaked balance sheet from Alameda Research. The story
found that the relationship between FTX and Alameda Research was deeper and more intertwined than previously known, including that FTX was lending high quantities of its own token FTT to Alameda to help build up cash. It sparked mass withdrawals from FTX, causing the crypto firm to experience a very old financial problem: a bank run.
“FTX created a worthless token out of thin air and used it to make its balance sheet appear more robust than it really was,” Klippsten said.
As king of crypto, Bankman-Fried influence was starting to pour into political and popular culture. FTX bought prominent sports sponsorships with Formula One Racing and bought the naming rights to an arena in Miami, and ran Super Bowl ads featuring “Seinfeld” creator Larry David. He pledged to donate $1 billion toward Democrats this election cycle — his actual donations were in the tens of millions — and prominent politicians like Bill Clinton were invited to speak at FTX conferences. Football star Tom Brady invested in FTX, as did his supermodel soon-to-be-ex-wife Gisele Bündchen.
Bankman-Fried had been the subject of some criticism before FTX collapsed. While he largely operated FTX out of U.S. jurisdiction from his headquarters in The Bahamas, Bankman-Fried was increasingly vocal about the need for more regulation of the cryptocurrency industry. Many supporters of crypto oppose government oversight. Now, FTX’s collapse may have helped make the case for stricter regulation.
One of those critics was Binance found er and CEO Changpeng Zhao. The feud between the two billionaires spilled out onto Twitter, where Zhao and BankmanFried collectively commanded millions of followers. Zhao helped kickstart the withdrawals that doomed FTX when he said Binance would sell its holdings in FTX’s crypto token FTT.
“What a s(asterisk)(asterisk)t show ... and it’s going to be crypto’s fault (instead of one guys’s fault),” Zhao wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

Growing fruit trees indoors
BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTORWith the holiday shopping season approaching, a great gift that you might consider giving someone is an indoor fruit tree. While we do not recommend indoor apples, tart cherry, or pear, there are some fruit trees that can thrive indoors when given the right amount of space, sunlight, and other growing conditions. They will then be moved outdoors in the summer.
Citrus is the most common indoor fruit trees for us in Northern Illinois. I know many homeowners that will grow these successfully. Varieties include
‘Calamondin’ Orange, ‘Satsuma’ Orange, ‘Ponderosa’ Lemon, ‘Meyer’ Lemon, Ka r Lime, and Kumquats. What is unique about these varieties is that they are dwarf and self-pollinating in which pollinators are not needed.
Fig trees can be grow indoors too. ‘Chicago Hardy’ and ‘Brown Turkey’ are two varieties you will find. Unlike a dwarf citrus that tends to grow to a height of 3-4’, a fig tree can reach 5-6’ if not taller. I have a 5 year old ‘Chicago Hardy’ in a container that I bring out in the summer and return indoors in the fall. It yields handfuls of figs throughout the summer and fall.
To grow indoor fruit trees, you need to pick the right container. A good container for fruit trees will be bigger than 5 gallons, able to move outdoors in the summer, and provide very good drainage. I have found that a 10 gallon container works well for my fig. Consider your potting mix too. The best one tends to be a citrus/cacti mix that is commonly found in the houseplant section at home and garden centers.
When bringing your fruit tree indoors in the fall, you may need to supplement with artificial lighting. Fig trees can tolerate a sunny window with 4-6 hours of sunlight whereas a citrus tree will
need 10-12 hours and greatly benefit with additional lighting. This lighting can be either fluorescent or LED.
Place your fruit trees in areas that stay relatively warm, above 65 F. This will ensure that they continue to thrive during the fall and winter. Your trees will need to be watered regularly. I find that my fig tree needs to be water 2-3 times a week though your citrus will not need this much. Add some compost every 3 months. You may want to add a low NPK fertilizer depending on how your trees look.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENTSolar greenhouse
BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTORSAfter three years of sitting idle, the Oregon, IL, o-grid solar greenhouse has a new lease on life. Some interesting lessons were learned along the way.
In 2010, the Illinois Renewable Energy Association (IREA) commissioned a builder to design and build a greenhouse similar to those used in the Chinese Himalayas, earth sheltered on the north side with broad expanses of south facing windows. Since the new greenhouse was standing on level ground with no possibility of being earth sheltered, it was heavily insulated on the north side with a phase change wall to moderate temperatures. Double paned windows for passive solar gain were across much of the south side. Two 50 gallon barrels of water moderated temperature swings. It was primarily o-grid, with solar electricity powering new LEDs which hung above the plants. It was designed and built to perform during the entire year. Unfortunately, temperature swings caused the glass panes to crack.
We had some success in growing lettuce and some leafy crops but failed to produce fruit or root crops.
The greenhouse was located at our home, the lREA headquarters. The location was temporary, since we planned to eventually stabilize temperatures by connecting it to an earth tube. Since it was only temporary, we were willing to part with it if we found someone to manage it.
In 2016, the Oregon High School agriculture teacher, Josh Nelson, oered to move it to the school grounds and implement the concepts, including a hydroponic system and linking it to an earth tube to moderate temperatures. Students would learn how to grow plants and use them in school menus as well as become interested in and learn about the use of renewable energy.
The agriculture teacher retired from teaching and the greenhouse project was abandoned.
Recently, the project was revived with the help of an interested student, Cody Dunbar, his teacher, Chelsea Eden, and the engineer, Victor Zaderej, who designed the building and the LED light-
ing system. Improvements were made in the building itself. It was placed on a basement foundation to use the earth’s temperature to moderate temperatures. A solar powered fan moves air through the building. The old windows were replaced by state of the art German windows with the value of R11 (insulating quality) of a standard house wall to heat the building during sunny winter days; 2 kW of solar panels were used to power the LED grow lights and run the fan.
Funding from the town of Oregon, the Oregon High School, and Happy Leaf LLC made it possible to fully implement the improvements to the building that were envisioned several years earlier. Dave Merrill of Sun Air Systems was also an integral part of making the upgrades to the building possible.
Plants are now grown using hydroponics and LED grow lights. A net pot is fi lled with clay pellets and placed into the top of a wide mouthed one quart canning jar. Seeds are sprinkled sparingly over the pellets. The jar is then fi lled with nutrient rich water (Maxi-Grow: 1 teaspoon per gallon) and covered by a black sock
to prevent algal growth. As the plants grow, water is added to allow the lower roots to drink.
The essential element in the growing process is varicolored grow lights.
Victor Zaderej, developer of the lights, has experimented with various colored lights to determine which – red, blue, green or white – encourage the desired type of growth. Zaderej and his wife, Polly McCann, are the founders of Happy Leaf, the company that manufactures and sells the lights. They have experimented in their home and now produce all of the greens that they can use. In addition to salad vegetables, they have also grown microgreens, tomatoes, root plants and cucumbers. They encourage anyone who is interested to grow vegetables in their own home and enjoy fresh produce during all seasons and weather.
Zaderej clipped a batch of greens to send home with us for that day’s salad. They were tasty and tender – convincing evidence of the joy of growing vegetables anytime, anywhere.
