State COVID Update

Two more regions enter Phase 4 By Jerry Nowicki

Capitol News Illinois jnowicki@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD – Two more regions of the state moved to Phase 4 COVID-19 guidelines, meaning five of 11 regions can now allow both indoor dining and organized sports. Region 1 in northwest Illinois and Region 2 in north-central Illinois each moved to Phase 4, which allows for indoor dining and drinking and, after last Friday’s announcement from the Illinois Department of Public Health, competitive participation in high school athletics. Regions 3 in west-central Illinois, 5 in southern Illinois and 6 in east-central Illinois are all already in Phase 4. Gov. JB Pritzker also gave an update Monday on the state’s vaccination effort, noting the coronavirus.illinois.gov webpage will now have a portal to share information about the COVID-19 vaccine. The page has information about vaccine sites, eligibility, appointments and more. On Jan. 25, the state entered Phase 1B of its vaccination plan, but Pritzker stressed at a visit to a vaccination site in Tinley Park Monday that vaccines will currently be administered by appointment only. “The rollout of Phase 1B is truly an exciting development, but I want to remind everyone that there are only about 120,000 first doses arriving in Illinois – outside of Chicago, that is – this week,” Pritzker said. “Because of the federal supply limitations, I want to emphasize that vaccinations are being given by appointment only. I’ve said that before, but I want to make it clear so people don’t go line up at their local pharmacy or line up at their local health department.” The website has a list of vaccine site locations and links to the website of the pharmacy, health department or other location where a vaccine appointment can be made. Pritzker, however, said “the vast majority of people” will be unable to make an appointment immediately in Phase 1B due to restrictions of who is eligible in the phase and a limited supply coming from

the federal government. While Phase 1A prioritized health care workers and long-term care residents, Phase 1B includes people aged 65 years and older and non-health care frontline essential workers, defined as “those workers who are essential for the functioning of society and are at highest risk of exposure.” These include first responders such as firefighters, law enforcement and security personnel; corrections officers and inmates; food and agriculture workers; postal service workers; manufacturers; grocery store workers; public transit workers; teachers and other educators; and shelter workers, among others. To date, Illinois has been delivered over 1.6 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Of those, 692,763 doses have been administered, with an average of 28,171 shots administered each of the past seven days. Of the doses received, 550,050 have been part of the federal government’s pharmacy partnership program which focuses on vaccinating long-term care residents through partnerships with nationwide pharmacy chains. A total of 110,403 doses have been administered through that program. Pritzker said that program “has gone exceedingly slow,” and he noted that the vaccines given through the program are taken from the state’s federal allotment. “All the vaccinations that are necessary for that entire group have been taken out already, of our allotment, and they sit on shelves because that federal pharmacy partnership is so slow at the job,” he said. While the state had administered about 52 percent of the 1.1 million doses it has received outside of the program, only about 20 percent of the long-term care partnership vaccines have been administered. Pritzker also noted that actual numbers are likely higher, as vaccine administrators have three days from giving the vaccine until they are required to report it to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pritzker said he has had “numerous conversations” with President Joe Biden’s administration about the nation’s vaccine effort. He said he is encouraged by Biden’s stated willingness to invoke the Defense Production Act, which is a U.S. law that allows the federal government to compel U.S. companies to produce supplies needed for national defense. “The Defense Production Act allows you to free up all of the ingredients, all of the supply chain that are involved in the creation of vaccines and allows the two companies (which make vaccines), Moderna and Pfizer, to ramp up production in a more substantial way,” Pritzker said. The vaccine update came as metrics tracking hospitalizations and positivity rates for the virus in the state continued to improve. The rolling seven-day average positivity rate dropped to 4.7 percent, according to IDPH, decreasing for the 17th straight day and hitting its lowest point since Oct. 15. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 fell below 3,000 over the weekend for the first time since Oct. 27, hitting 2,962. Intensive care bed usage fell to 601 beds used by COVID-19 patients while ventilator use for the disease dropped to 302. On a rolling seven-day average from Monday to Sunday, there were 3,165 beds in use, 660 ICU beds and 349 ventilators. All three represented decreases of roughly 8.8 to 10.3 percent from the one-week period prior. The state reported another 49 deaths Monday after reporting 39 on Sunday and 96 on Saturday, bringing the total death count to 18,798 since the pandemic began. There have been more than 1.1 million confirmed or probable cases among 15.4 million test results reported. Valentine’s Day Marriage Licenses

Make appointments now for Valentine’s From Lori Gummow

Winnebago County Clerk

Applicants for marriage licenses must call for an appointment well in advance for marriages in Winnebago County. Due to COVID restrictions, couples must apply and submit information before an appointment. On the scheduled day and time, the couple must appear together with required documents at the Winnebago County Clerk’s Office, first floor, 404 Elm Street, Rockford, wearing masks. At that time each applicant must present valid

identification including proof of age, complete and sign the marriage license application, and pay the $40 (cash only) application fee. Acceptable forms of ID and other details should be reviewed at WinnebagoCountyClerk.com. No blood test is required. Once issued, licenses are valid beginning the following calendar day and are valid for 60 days. “We are excited to serve happy couples at any time, but don’t want them to miss their chance for a Valentine’s Day weekend wedding due to a delay in completing their

application and appearing at their appointment,” said County Clerk & Recorder Lori Gummow. The Clerk’s office schedules appointments for applications for marriage licenses 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Ceremonies at Winnebago County Courthouse, 400 W. State Street, may take place within 60 days after the day the marriage license is issued. Marriage ceremonies are between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Marriages are performed on a first-come, first-served basis; no appointment necessary. Cost is $10 cash.

Vaccine appointments canceled amid confusion over supply BY JONATHAN DREW ASSOCIATED PRESS

An increasing number of COVID-19 vaccination sites around the U.S. are canceling appointments because of vaccine shortages in a rollout so rife with confusion that even the new CDC director admitted she doesn’t know exactly how many shots are in the pipeline. States were expected to find out their latest weekly allocation of vaccines on Tuesday amid complaints from governors and top health ocials about inadequate supplies and the need for earlier and more reliable estimates of how much is on the way so that they can plan accordingly. President Joe Biden suggested Monday that he hopes the country can soon ramp up to 1.5 million shots dispensed per day. His administration has also promised more openness and said it will hold news briefings three times a week about the outbreak that has killed over 420,000 Americans. Amid the rising frustration, the White House planned to hold a call with governors Tuesday to discuss the vaccine supply. The setup inherited from the Trump administration has been marked by miscommunication and unexplained bottlenecks, with shortages reported in some places even as vaccine doses remain on the shelf. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Biden’s brandnew director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was herself flummoxed over the weekend in trying to describe current supplies. “I can’t tell you how much vaccine we have,” she told “Fox News Sunday,” describing the problem as a challenge left by the outgoing Trump administration. “And if I can’t tell it to you, then I can’t tell it to the governors, and I can’t tell it to the state health ocials. If they don’t know how much vaccine they’re getting, not just this week, but next week and the week after, they can’t plan.” On Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state can’t meet growing demand from residents partly because an increase in vaccine promised by the government hasn’t happened. “We are at the mercy of what the federal government sends us, and right now we are able to go through it quicker than what we are receiving,” he said. W hite House press secretary Jen Psaki responded by saying that Florida has administered only about half of the vaccines it has been given. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said Tuesday that he doesn’t expect the state’s allotment of vaccines to increase in the coming weeks,

which will limit progress in vaccinating those now eligible, including people over 65 and first responders. Rhode Island ocials, meanwhile, said late last week that they can’t even expand eligibility to those over 65 at current allocations from the government, despite complaints from advocates for the elderly. As of Tuesday morning, the CDC reported that just over half of the 41 million doses distributed to states have been put in people’s arms. That is well short the hundreds of millions of doses that experts say will need to be administered to achieve herd immunity and conquer the outbreak. The U.S. ranks fifth in the world in the number of doses administered relative to the country’s population, behind No. 1 Israel, United Arab Emirates, Britain and Bahrain, according to the University of Oxford. The reason more of the available shots in the U.S. haven’t been dispensed isn’t entirely clear. Some state ocials have complained of a lag between when they report their numbers to the government and when the figures are posted on the CDC website. And while some vaccination sites have canceled appointments for first-dose shots, many are believed to be holding large quantities of vaccine in reserve to make sure people who have already gotten their first shot receive the required second one on schedule, three to four weeks later. In the New Orleans area, Ochsner Health said Monday that the number of vaccines it receives has declined, resulting in the cancellation last week of 21,400 first-dose appointments. Hospital officials said second-dose appointments aren’t aected. Inova Health System, the largest health provider in Virginia’s Washington, D.C.,

suburbs, said it is canceling all first-dose appointments at its mass vaccination clinics beginning Thursday because of inadequate supplies. Those who have already received a first dose will have their appointments for a second dose honored, it said. Inova has administered more than 70,000 shots. In North Carolina, Greensboro-based Cone Health announced it is canceling first-dose appointments for 10,000 people and moving them to a waiting list because of supply problems. Also, UNC Health said Monday that the 10,000 doses it will receive this week are less than half of what it expected. Jesse Williams, 81, of Reidsville, North Carolina, said his vaccination appointment scheduled for Thursday with Cone Health was canceled, and he is waiting to hear when it might be rescheduled. The former volunteer firefighter said he misses attending church, playing golf and seeing friends in person, and he had hoped the vaccine would make more of those activities possible again. “It’s just a frustration that we were expecting to be having our shots and being a little more resilient to COVID-19,” he said. The vaccine rollout across the 27-nation European Union has also run into roadblocks and has likewise been criticized as too slow. Pfizer is delaying deliveries while it upgrades its plant in Belgium to increase capacity. And AstraZeneca disclosed that its initial shipment will be smaller than expected. The EU, with 450 million citizens, is demanding that the pharmaceutical companies meet their commitments on schedule.

STOCK MARKET

Stocks give up an early lead and end lower on Wall Street BY KEN SWEET, DAMIAN J. TROISE AND ALEX VEIGA ASSOCIATED PRESS

Stocks were muted in afternoon trading on Wall Street Tuesday, as investors weighed sol id cor porate ea r n ings results against concerns about the virus pandemic. The S&P 500 was flat after drifting between small gains and losses. Most of the stocks in the index were down. Gains in technology and communications companies outweighed losses in energy, financial, utilities and other sectors. Blue chip companies like Johnson & Johnson and General Electric rose after reporting better-than-expected results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 29 points, or less than 0.1%, at 30,985 as of 2:45 p.m. Eastern. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite was up 0.1%, within striking distance of another all-time high. “The major theme, not only today but this week, is earnings season,” said Angelo Kourkafas, investment strategist at Edward Jones. “The early results are encouraging.” Investors are in the midst of quarterly earnings reporting season for U.S. companies, and this is the busiest week so far. Dozens of large companies are reporting this week, from all parts of the economy, including American Express, J&J, Apple, GE and others. More than 100 companies in the S&P 500 are scheduled to tell investors this week how they fared during the last three months of 2020. As a whole, analysts expect S&P 500 companies to say their fourth-quarter profit fell 5% from a year

earlier. That’s a milder drop than the 9.4% they were forecasting earlier this month, according to FactSet. General Electric climbed 4.9% after the industrial conglomerate reported a surge in cash flow. GE is attempting a turnaround after shedding unprofitable divisions and focusing more on big industrial products like jet engines and power equipment. Typically, when a company is in turnaround, investors care more about cash flow than quarterly profits because it shows the company is able to pay down debts. Johnson & Johnson rose 2.5% after the company reported fourth-quarter results that cruised past Wall Street’s expectations. A big jump in prescription drug sales boosted the company’s revenue, but profits dove 57% due to higher research spending and one-time charges totaling $2.4 billion. The company also said it expects to share results from the late-stage study of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine, which requires only one dose, by early next week. American Express fell 3.7% despite repor t ing st ronger-t han-e x pected earnings. The company’s card holders continue to postpone travel, entertainment and dining out due to the pandemic, which has cut into its bottom line. Shares in GEO Group and CoreCivic, which operate prisons, slumped following news that the Biden administration will not be renewing federal government contracts with private prison operators. GEO Group slid 12.7%, while CoreCivic dropped 6.6%. Meanwhile, traders are keeping a wary eye on rising coronavirus infections in various countries and a bumpy rollout of vaccinations in the U.S. The spread of variants that are thought to be more easily transmissible and might be less eectively targeted by existing vaccines is adding to alarm. Vaccine maker Moderna said Monday that it will study whether a booster shot would be needed to protect against variants of the coronavirus, “out of an abundance of caution.” “Nowadays the market mood is set by either the hopes that the COVID vaccine would mark the end of the biggest economic downturn of our lifetime, or the stimulus hopes to keep our heads above water. Yesterday, both hopes got smashed,” Ipek Ozkardeskaya, a senior analyst at Swissquote Bank, said in a commentary.

President Joe Biden has proposed a $1.9 trillion plan to send $1,400 to most Americans and deliver other support for the economy. But his party holds only the slimmest possible majority in the Senate, making approval uncertain. Several Republicans have already voiced opposition to parts of the plan. The vaccine rollout and hopes for more economic stimulus have been guiding more optimism toward an economic recovery this year, but the picture remains unclear. “Not all of those things are playing out in a clear way,” said Sylvia Jablonski, chief investment ocer of Defiance ETFs. “We don’t know yet how much of the stimulus will come out and when.” The yield on the 10-year Treasury edged higher to 1.04% from 1.02% late Monday.

In European stock markets, Germany’s DAX rose 1.7%, and France’s CAC 40 rose 0.9%. The FTSE 100 in London rose 0.2%. End of trading update: Stocks ended lower on Wall Street Tuesday after spending most of the day in the red. The S&P 500 lost 0.1%, pulled down by losses in banks and industrial companies. Gains for some Big Tech companies like Amazon and Facebook helped keep the losses in check. Small-company stocks fell more than other parts of the market. Treasury yields rose. Investors weighed solid corporate earnings results against growing concerns about the pandemic. Many large companies are reporting this week from all parts of the economy, including American Express, Johnson & Johnson, Apple and General Electric.

Alan Tudyk is one of those actors who seems to be in everything. While he always turns in a stellar performance, he seldom takes the lead. Tudyk now headlines Syfy’s new series, Resident Alien, as a space alien who crash lands in a remote area of Colorado, and I can’t imagine another actor who could do the role even half as well. Science fiction isn’t new to Tudyk, whose breakout role was as Wash in Joss Whedon’s 2002-2003 sci-fi western, Firefly. Maybe you remember him as the suburban dentist Noah on the comedy Suburgatory, or as the rich, cowardly, and incompetent boss on another short-lived series, Powerless. No? Then you’ve probably seen or heard him in some of at least a hundred other series, movies, or voice-over roles. Tudyk playing a space alien masquerading as a human is probably all the series creator, Chris Sheridan, needed to say to sell the show. Okay, the fact that it’s based on Dark Horse Comics’ comic book series of the same name might also have influenced them to say yes. Anyone who has read the comics or seen an ad or promo for Resident Alien already knows that the alien played by Tudyk assumes the visage – and lovely lakeside vacation cabin – of Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle. He makes himself at home in the good doctor’s cabin, avoiding human contact as he methodically begins searching for a vital piece of technology that was

lost when he crashed. Four months later the doctor of Patience, Colorado is found dead, possibly murdered, and the Sheriff (Corey Reynolds, The Closer) asks Harry to examine the body. Harry uses his day in town to test his ability to act human. Let’s just say he’s lucky that most residents of Patience are already a few bubbles off plumb, so he fits in better than he thought he would. Good thing, because the town’s young mayor (Levi Fiehler, The Fosters) soon recruits Harry to replace the dead doctor. The premise is an ideal way to showcase Tudyk’s comedic and dramatic skills, but he’s also surrounded with a strong ensemble cast. In some ways – all of them good – this reminds me of another beloved Syfy series, Eureka (2006-2012). If the picturesque scenery seems familiar, that’s probably due to both shows shooting on location in British Columbia, but not in the same town. Instead of being a space alien, Eureka’s fishout-of-water was a law enforcement officer policing a town full of geniuses working on top-secret government projects. However, on both shows it’s the outsider’s view of small town life that reveals both the drama and the comedy. Resident Alien is definitely worth watching.

Programming Notes:

Resident Alien premieres Wednesday, January 27 on Syfy at 9 p.m. CT.

Immigration

Veteran activists campaign for Biden’s immigration reform By Anita Snow and Manuel Valdes Associated Press

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Immigrant rights activists energized by a new Democratic administration and majorities on Capitol Hill are gearing up for a fresh political battle to push through a proposed bill from President Joe Biden that would open a pathway to citizenship for up to 11 million people. The multimillion-dollar #WeAreHome campaign was launched Monday by national groups including United We Dream and the United Farm Workers Foundation. It starts with ads on Facebook and other social media to reach lawmakers and the constituents who can pressure them. “We are home,” a young woman’s voice declares in the first video spot showing immigrants in essential jobs such as cleaning and health care. “Home, even when they say we don’t belong.” The effort is a longshot. Immigration remains a third rail dividing Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. and opponents of the measure have pledged to fight it. Although Democrats now account for 50 of 100 senators, with a deciding vote by Vice President Kamala Harris, the bill will need at least 60 votes to pass. Opponents promised to launch their own social media blitz, as well as TV and radio ads. They also said they would write letters and meet virtually with members of Congress. But organizers say they enjoy the momentum of a new administration and growing public support for giving people in the U.S. illegally a chance at citizenship. The activists note they are also more seasoned. “The movement has matured,” said Lorella Praeli, the Peruvian-born co-president of Community Change, among the national groups leading the campaign. “It’s more diverse, experienced.” Praeli, now 28, was brought to the U.S. when she was 10 so she could get better medical treatment after losing a leg in an accident. She became an immigrant activist in her teens. Praeli honed her skills as Latino communities outreach director for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign before addressing the 2016 Democratic National Convention. She said the new battle is being waged on various levels, from grassroots organizing in communities to lobbying on Capitol Hill. Participating groups will bankroll the campaign with their own fundraising and the help of the New Venture Fund, a nonprofit social advocacy group. “We need an early breakthrough on immigration,” said Praeli. “We have 100 days to set the tone.”

Patrice Lawrence, the Jamaica-born co-executive director for the UndocuBlack Network, said the campaign represents all immigrants “regardless of the color of our skin, where we live, if we work, how we pray or how old we are.” Glo H. Choi, of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium, said comprehensive immigration reform is overdue. “The temporary measures of the past have just been kicking the can down the road,” said the Chicago-based community organizer who was brought to the U.S. as a child from South Korea. The effort offers hope to immigrants like Daniela Murguia, a University of Washington graduate who lives in the Seattle suburb of Renton. Murguia’s family brought her here from Mexico in 2008 when she was 11 and she has no legal status or protections. She recently raised millions of dollars in coronavirus pandemic aid for immigrants living in the U.S. illegally and lobbied to include such help in the state budget. Under Biden’s bill, most people like Murguia would wait eight years for citizenship, but those enrolled in the Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA; those with temporary protective status after fleeing violence-wracked countries; and farmworkers would wait three years. The bill includes protections for other kinds of immigrants, too. Opponents note that President Ronald Reagan’s 1986 amnesty for nearly 3 million immigrants was followed by a flood of new arrivals. But immigration enforcement has expanded greatly since, and Biden’s proposal calls for more technology at land crossings, airports and seaports even as he halts construction of former President Donald Trump’s signature border wall. Still, Sen. Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican who supported the wall and is a staunch advocate of restrictive immigration laws, describes the bill as “open borders.” He said it has “no regard for the health and security of Americans, and zero enforcement.” The Federation for American Immigration Reform, a major opponent of the bill, also considers it a kind of amnesty and vows to fight it. “It would not only reward everyone who has violated our immigration laws in the past, but also induce millions more to come here illegally,” said R.J. Hauman, head of the group’s governmental relations. “In exchange for absolutely nothing.” NumbersUSA Deputy Director Chris Chmielenski suggested Biden may feel beholden to activists who helped elect him.

The group favors reduced immigration. “I think it has zero chance of passing,” he said. But the activists have changing public opinion on their side. Seven in 10 voters said they preferred offering immigrants in the U.S. illegally a chance to apply for legal status, compared with about 3 in 10 who thought they should be deported to their birth country, according to AP VoteCast. The November survey of more than 110,000 voters showed 9 in 10 Biden voters and about half of Trump voters favored creating a way for people to legalize their status. Veteran civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, an activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers who now runs her own foundation, said the immigration reform

push will benefit from the dramatic stories of children being separated from their parents under the Trump administration. “I think that is going to make a difference,” Huerta said. “Once people see the justice of the issue they will come onboard.” Immigrants say a proposal in the bill to replace the word “alien” with “noncitizen” in immigration laws already makes them feel a difference in the way they are viewed. “I feel more hopeful, more confident,” said Melissa Laratte, a member of National Domestic Workers Alliance, another group organizing the campaign. She arrived with her young son in Miami two years ago seeking asylum as a member of an opposition group in her native Haiti. “They’re trying to help us,” she said.

Winter Outdoor Fun in the Rockford Region

Snow Park at Alpine Hills

By Elizabeth Miller Rockford Area CVB

Sure, this winter weather makes me want to grab some hot chocolate or a caffeine boost from one of our many local restaurants and coffee shops, wrap up in a blanket and watch a movie (or two), and hit the easy button and order pizza or tacos for delivery. But I’m an outdoor enthusiast at heart and, lucky for residents and visitors of the area, the Rockford region has so much to offer year-round—and, yes, that includes the rest of this snowy, winter season! So what are some fun things to do during the winter in Rockford? Here are my top 3 picks for this year:

SNOW PARK AT ALPINE HILLS

Yes, we can snowboard, ski and tube all in one location in Rockford!! I’ve actually never really snowboarded before (except for

Snowshoeing with Rocktown Adventures in my parents’ backyard when I was 10... but I don’t think that counts), so I’m eager to hit the local slopes again this year with my friends and family. What’s awesome about Snow Park at Alpine Hills is that even if there’s no snow on the ground, they will MAKE THEIR OWN. And they are making enough snow (when it’s snowing naturally, of course) to build a four-foot base for the terrain park—a snowboarder’s paradise—and they also are offering an outdoor skating rink. What an awesome place to get away from it all, get outside— and right here in the heart of Rockford!

WINTER WALKS & HIKES AT SEVERSON DELLS

The healing power of taking a walk is always a winner—especially on a brisk, winter day with snow covered Forest City

trees and terrains! Take a break from the winter indoor blues—best to pick a sunny day—and join the Severson Dells staff for a guided walk along the trails in search of the region’s native wildlife. Added bonus—they have hot cocoa waiting for you after your walk is complete. Just be sure to dress warm, be ready for a mile-plus hike over moderate winter grounds, and bring the family for this awesome FREE activity!

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING & SNOWSHOEING WITH ROCKTOWN ADVENTURES

I actually have been cross country skiing before...once or twice that is! Lucky for us, there are groomed trails in Rockford’s city limits at Sinnissippi and Aldeen golf courses—and you should also check out the trails that Rock Cut State Park (Loves Park) and

the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County (countywide including Deer Run in Cherry Valley) have to offer! Experts and beginners are all welcome, thanks to Rocktown Adventures which holds snow sports courses with equipment rental options aplenty. Although chances of wiping out with these two activities are significantly less than downhill skiing or snowboarding, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are still both quite a work out! I hope this list helps you plan your next outdoor winter adventure this year! There are plenty of other fun outdoor activities in the area. Hope to see you outside enjoying our snowy regional landscape! For more information about these locations and more in the Rockford region, visit www.gorockford.com.

Growing small fruits: raspberry BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

Raspberries are one of the most common small fruits that we receive questions about at the University of Illinois Extension oces. Most seasons these fruits thrive and do well in Northern Illinois. While diseases are not too much of a problem for them, pests can be. You also need to prune your raspberries each season in order for them to yield properly for you. Raspberries produce fruit on canes. These canes live for two seasons. New canes are created each spring. These canes then overwinter into next spring in which they’ll produce fruit that summer. To further

confuse you, new canes are called floricanes which eventually are called primocanes. What this means is that your raspberry plant produced floricanes in 2020. These are very green in color. Now that the floricanes has overwintered into the spring of 2021, they are now called primocanes and are ready to produce raspberries for you. If you want to grow red raspberries, you’ll see two types: summer and everbearing. If the raspberry is summer, this means it is a traditional red raspberry that will produce fruit on primocanes. If it’s everbearing, this raspberry will produce on floricanes and primocanes. The benefit with everbearing is that you are able to prune easier. You

could move canes down every spring which will produce new canes that summer that bear in the fall. Eectively just having one fall crop every year but not having to do a lot of pruning. The other strategy with everbearing is to harvest from floricanes that fall and from those same canes next summer when they are now primocanes. Recommended variet ies for red, summer bearing are ‘Boyne’, ‘Killarney’, ‘Lauren’, and ‘Titan’. For everbearing, red raspberries varieties include ‘Joan J’, ‘Jaclyn’, ‘Heritage’, and ‘Josephine’. Yellow raspberries are technically red raspberries without the red pigment. These include ‘Goldie’, ‘Amber’, ‘Fall Gold’, and ‘Anne’.

Black raspberries tend to not be as winter hardy as red though they are fairly compact. These varieties include ‘Bristol’, ‘Jewel’, ‘Blackhawk’, and ‘Allen’. All of these varieties are very vigorous though. Your purple raspberries are a cross between red and black. Like black raspberries, they are more compact. They may also have more winter hardiness than black. Recommended varieties are ‘Brandywine’, ‘Royalty’, and ‘Estate’. Next week, I’ll go more into detail on managing raspberries including spacing and management. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Scientific approaches to improving agriculture BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL CONTRIBUTORS

This year’s Christmas gifts included several vegetarian “fast food” packages. While we are familiar with vegetarian food, these convenience foods made us consider alternative foods, such as vegetarian, which have fewer adverse environmental impacts, as well as alternative ways of producing food. Of interest to us is the evolving challenges of alternative ways of producing food since existing agricultural practices, while successful, involve some adverse impacts. Primary ongoing challenges to what has become known as industrial agriculture have come from what is known as organic farming. A recent talk by author Dick Munson sponsored by the Environmental Law and Policy Center focused his upcoming book Tech to Table: Twenty-Five Innovators who are introducing digitalized approaches to farming. While still in the early stages of gaining consumer acceptance, Munson portrays their arrival as presenting a new challenge to both industrial and organic farming.

Existing environmental problems related to current farming practices are seen as increasing as populations and food demands grow. Some of the adverse environmental impacts include soil losses, clear cutting forests to grow corn and soybeans for cattle feed or converting them to pasture for raising cattle, heavy reliance on fossil fuels and chemicals, increasing crop irrigation and dropping water tables, dead zones from chemical runo of farm operations and adverse impacts on human and ecosystem health. The video presentation only highlighted a few of the innovations but served to illustrate the diversity of alternative farming. One is using animal stem cells using bioreactors to increase meat cells with taste and texture similar to existing meats. The approach avoids methane releases from live animals, avoids feed lots and their wastes, confining animals in densely populated facilities, and eliminates the need to kill and process live animals. Currently these processes are more costly per pound than traditional practices but ongoing cost reductions are expected to

increase their cost competitiveness. One approach to improving agricultural productivity is tracing nutrients in the soil to identify existing soil bacteria. Soil samples are analyzed and compared to other soils. Detailed information will be used to advise what to plant in particular soils as well as disease potential of the soil. Another approach is developing edible coatings from plants to apply to existing food crops reducing water loss and preventing oxygen penetration, increasing shelf life and reducing food wastes substantially. Vertical farms located in urban settings to provide food materials grown in hydroponic conditions are being developed. They can operate 24 hours/day, seven days/week and are far less vulnerable to weather conditions which can damage field operations. New machinery is being developed to identify desirable plants and remove competition for nutrients from weeds. The machines would eliminate chemicals or back breaking human labor currently used. Another innovation is growing meal

worms in large concentrations to be harvested and processed into animal feed, initially for chickens. An aquaculture operation is growing red sea weed to add to cattle feed to eliminate the production of methane, a known contributor to climate change, during digestion. Some of these approaches to agriculture are expected to disrupt existing agriculture practices over time. They are presented as a means to lessen current adverse eects. They are seen collectively as integrating food, energy and environmental interests while providing abundant and healthier food to feed a growing global population. The presentation was interesting and thought provoking but it left us with questions regarding the economic, social and environmental consequences if such a transition is successful. Our agricultural system has long rallied around the need to increase food production to feed a growing global population yet has diculty distributing existing food surpluses to the world’s hungry including those in our country.

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK:

Theme: Valentine’s Day

VIRGO, LIBRA AND SCORPIO Horoscope

ARIES After a few celebrations, your house might feel like it’s been turned upside down, so you’ll quickly set about restoring or der. A major cleaning is needed, and you’ll unclutter your mind in the process. TAURUS You won’t hesitate to speak your mind and voice your concerns when others won’t. You might also write a poem or express something that ends up being quoted around the world, much to your surprise. GEMINI You’ll be worried about a financial issue. It’s probably just a simple mistake though, such as a bill ad dressed to the wrong person. You’ll soon be smiling again, and your natural charisma will return. CANCER You’ll have a lot going on. Your loved ones will get you to par ticipate in a few activities or at least succeed in getting you out of the house. You’ll be tal ked into signing up for a group course of some kind. LEO You’ll need a second cup of cof fee to feel like yourself and do away with procrastination. After ward, you’ll become incredibly ef fective at kickstarting new pro jects and achieving certain goals. VIRGO In the middle of a crowd, you won’t always know how to push your way through it. At work, your boss, clients or colleagues will frequently seem uncertain and make a lot of vague requests. LIBRA At work, you’ll be entitled to a significant promotion. Before you agree to anything, however, it’s vital that you talk it over with your partner and the rest of your family to avoid any misun derstandings.
