HelloFriends, Here we are, a new season and with it, the promise of new beginnings. 2020 was a year for the record books in more ways than one. Yet, even through all of the restrictions, postponements, loss and disappointments one thing remains unwavering - the love between Rocky Mountain couples like you. The resilience seen from the wedding community, as well as the brides and grooms who refused to let the circumstances diminish their love was and continues to be inspiring. These couples and vendors all demonstrated the power of love in a time when the world truly needed it most. For the RMB team, we have continued to grow, create and come together with the intentional goal of bringing joy to our readers in new ways, both online and in these pages. We have added more sisters to the team and even some manpower with a Rocky Mountain babe. Despite all of the hardships and unknowns, it has truly been a special time that I will look back on with a sense of profound thankfulness.

This styled shoot transports us back to warm summer days spent in the middle of the Canadian Badlands. Heather Johnston Creative and Alexandra Kurta Photography brought terracotta colour, intricate texture and new life to this quiet desert landscape. Holly Loves Paper designed a paper suite that was simple, fun and inviting with terracotta hoodoos and cute cacti, illustrating the curious surrounding landscape. This Marbella dish was the perfect piece to hold the bride’s spectacular wedding ring.
D E S E RT R O M A N C E Creative Edge Flowers created arrangements full of feminine florals, dried palm leaf fans and wispy pampas grass to complete the styled shoot’s theme - bohemian chic. To top it all off, brilliant cacti were featured in every set, whether it was the ceremony or table setting. These plants helped to juxtapose vibrant life against the dry desert. The bride stole the show in her beautiful emerald wrap dress from Blush & Raven Bridal Boutique, and we just love the use of velvet in this picturesque Alberta elopement!

SOFT SUCCULENTS Making all of our bohemian dreams come true, this summer scene featured earthy details like strong wicker pieces, knotted macrame chargers and plush velvet cushions by Orange Trunk Vintage Styling & Rentals. The handmade chargers from The Knot Garden YYC brought that “wild-west” bohemian feel to this tablescape, especially with the turquoise beading throughout. The couple’s illo Leather coasters helped to ground their elopement and first-ever meal as man and wife. Modern Bake’s macrame-inspired ivory cake was a masterpiece topped with detailed succulents and pretty florals.

C E N T R A L A L B E RTA 1 0 1 Advice for a perfect trip to Central Alberta featuring favourite local spots from Olds to Drumheller to Red Deer. Like all of Alberta, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Planning ahead can make all of the difference.
S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R Central Alberta, the home of the wild rose and the wide open spaces that visitors and native Albertans have come to know and love. This is an area with a history that’s rooted in agriculture and energy that continues to permeate the culture today. If you know Alberta’s most populated cities, Calgary and Edmonton, Central Alberta just touches the north side of the Calgary region and surrounds the entire Edmonton region. Summers in the area are long and comfortable, while winters are generally dry and cold. Typically, the temperature ranges between -15°C and 23°C. If you’re looking to plan a wedding in Central Alberta, one of the best times to visit is from early July to mid August, with July 26 being the hottest day of the year. Calling all prairie lovers - this location is for you! Central Alberta is the most clear between the end of June and the middle of October, which is something to be aware of if you’re set on an outdoor or semi-outdoor wedding. Don’t forget about rainy season when you’re planning, which occurs from early May until around June 23. Central Alberta is a wedding gem because of its close proximity to so many landscapes, including the rugged Rocky Mountains, carved hoodoos of the Canadian Badlands and the great Alberta plains. There’s a little bit of something for everyone!

W H AT T O P A C K You guests will thank you when you provide them with some guidelines and recommendations on what they should pack for your big weekend. You can send it out in an email or update the information to your wedding website for quick and easy access. For a Central Alberta wedding, guests should bring a light jacket or parka depending on the time of year! If they’re visiting the area and are going to be doing a lot of touring around, it would be good to recommend some sturdy walking shoes, a backpack and a water bottle. These will come in handy no matter what you’re doing, especially that water bottle for higher altitudes! If you’re having a summer wedding, a light sweater will ensure that guests are comfortable when the temperature drops at night, which is extremely common in this area. A simple rule of thumb is to think about what you would bring on a trip to the area, and that’s what you should suggest to your guests!
ACTIVITIES As mentioned earlier, Central Alberta borders on both the Calgary and Edmonton regions. For a day activity, guests can enjoy adventuring through some of these midwestern cities and getting the lay of the land. If they love western culture, steer them in the direction of Calgary, a city that is lovingly known as “Cowtown” and home of the Calgary Stampede. If small towns are more their speed, get them to adventure around Sundre, Olds, Didsbury or Ponoka. Central Alberta houses a number of interesting “ghost towns” that might be worth visiting for the guests who crave a day of history and sightseeing. Rowley is one of Alberta’s most popular ghost towns with actual buildings still intact - the town currently has a population of nine people, and their saloon hosts a pizza night on the last Saturday of the month to raise funds for the town. Visiting here feels like you’ve just been transported back to the 1950s. You can also stop by Sylvan Lake for a beach day in the summertime - if you do, it’s imperative to get there early! To live out that true Central Alberta experience, guests can stop at The Donut Mill located in Red Deer, Alberta. This restaurant and bakery is a well-known rest stop between Calgary and Edmonton where people pick up glazed donuts or a cup of Joe. While they may not have a Michelin star-level menu, it’s a sight to see and quintessentially Albertan! Another interesting sight to see is the Starlite Diner Car in Bowden, a throwback eatery that is made to look like a retro railcar. If you’re looking for some more locales to complete the food tour, look no further than Markerville Creamery, Olds College Brewery, Cilantro and Chive, Edgar Farms, Red Boar Smokery and Big Bend Market.

Make it official In Alberta, you can get your registration of marriage and marriage license at any registry agent office. You and your partner must both be present at the office with proper identification. Please know that this process might differ based on the location and the COVID-19 pandemic - double check before you head out. Acceptable pieces of identification contain your first and last name, photo and a distinct identification number. Be prepared to answer multiple questions, such as when and where are you getting married, or if you’ve had any previous marriages. The government fee for a marriage license is $40, and you must be married within three months of receiving the license. The province of Alberta does not require you to be a resident, but it does require two witnesses at the ceremony. Your officiant will have the responsibility of sending the signed registration of marriage form to Vital Statistics within 48 hours of the ceremony.

Courtney + Jackson edson, ab
riverlands weddings and events
Courtney and Jackson originally met at a mutual friend’s party, however, Courtney was in a relationship at the time. Their relationship didn’t start until some time after their first encounter, and from there, no one was rushing anything. The couple’s proposal didn’t happen until five years after they began dating, and it took place while they were living abroad in Sweden. Talk about a perfect proposal! While on a trip to the Spanish Canary Islands, Courtney and Jackson went to visit the Dunes of Maspalomas. As the couple got out of the car to take photos at the dunes, Jackson insisted on bringing one of their backpacks with him to ensure that their camera and computer were safe. Although Courtney thought the backpack would be safe in the car, she did not argue and let Jackson bring it with them. She had no idea, but the wedding ring was actually in that backpack the whole time! As the two took a video with their GoPro at the top of a sand dune, Jackson knelt down on one knee and proposed to his dream girl! Courtney was so surprised that she, to this day, can’t tell you a word that she or Jackson said.

DOWN THE AISLE
The wedding planning was pretty seamless for the pair, mainly because Jackson’s brother and his wife had gotten married only a few years prior. They had kept all of their plans from their special day, making it easy for Courtney and Jackson to do a larger and slightly altered version of the previous wedding. Their families were absolutely pivotal for the success of Courtney and Jackson’s big day, as they all worked hard to get everything organized before the two took off overseas. The ceremony and reception took place at Jackson’s parents’ acreage just outside of Edson, AB, making it easy for the couple to have everyone that they wanted in attendance. When asked about the highlights of the reception, Courtney and Jackson say, “speeches, first dance, party. But really, all of it was amazing!”

Katie and George met on Bumble and had their first date a week after matching. Just over a year later, the pair got engaged while on the edge of the pier at Sylvan Lake. Katie was told that they were going on a fishing date with friends, but little did she know that George had so much more in store for them! As George took photos of his soon-to-be fiancé and their fur baby, Katie turned around to face him and saw that he was down on one knee. As the whole engagement was happening, our bride saw her siblings stepping out from behind some nearby trees. It turns out that the whole fishing story was completely fake, and the entire family was there to celebrate!

MONOCHROME VISION
Their first looks were right up there at the top of their favourite moments from their wedding day. As Katie and George got their first look atop a beautiful cliff, time stood still and the whole world came into focus. The wedding day was extremely classic with a little bit of flare - black and white with rich shades of forest green and subtle neutrals. Due to the global pandemic, they had to scale down their large wedding to only have 50 guests in attendance. Although Katie and George’s relatively intimate wedding wasn’t their initial plan, the two gush that the day could not have been more perfect for them. It was a blessing in disguise!

“YES!” It was straight from a movie when Kennedy caught Axel’s eye during a bar shift at a local establishment. Axel knew right away that he needed to know her, and proceeded to walk over and take his future bride’s order. After a night of sparks flying, Kennedy decided to ask Axel for his number before leaving the bar. The two went on their first date the night after, and they’ve been inseparable ever since! One and a half years later came the proposal of a lifetime.

GILDED This delicately detailed You Had Me at Cupcake wedding cake is what stole the show at the reception. The hand piped gold details that adorned the simple piece were inspired by the intricate henna art that you see at South Asian weddings like this one. Calyx Floral Design added a pop of colorful floral texture to tie together the overall event design and truly wow guests. Calyx Floral What is your favorite part of the job? I LOVE to design bridal bouquets. Just knowing that the piece of floral art I am creating will be showcased in the bride’s photos for years to come is thrilling! Knowing this makes me do my best work!
Do you have a favourite took of the trade? I have a pair of old-fashioned flower stem trimmers that I have had for years, they are amazing. So many new fancy tools, and these are just the best.
What is your dream creation? I love installations! Large-scale and filled with stunning flowers (most likely peonies!). Give me a wall to cover, or a car to fill, location doesn’t matter!

What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? The cost of flowers. I often feel like I am a bit of a dream crusher when my clients come in with their amazing Pinterest boards filled with incredible (and really really expensive) designs. We always do our best to come up with budget friendly alternatives but it breaks my heart when my brides have no idea of the cost of some of the items they are dreaming of.

What is your best-hidden talent? I love to paint! …and I’m not half-bad at it (acrylics are my favorite). I love colors and mixing tones together – this helps me in so many ways when designing flowers. Seeing the different flower colors come together in my head while envisioning a bridal bouquet allows me to create a stunning end result.
Which occupation would you like to try for a day? I really really really want to learn how to weld. Know any welders taking on apprentices?

Where do you come up with your ideas? Mostly from nature and things I see around me. My ideas will pop up at the most inopportune times and I am known to blurt out a plan for a floral design in the middle of grocery shopping
What trend do you wish would disappear? I’m pretty over burlap and mason jars…
What is your favourite wedding season? Spring for sure… because its peony season and they are my absolute favorites!
What is your biggest indulgence? Shopping. I really love dresses and anything Kate Spade. I have a lot of clothes… like A LOT of clothes.
