Welcome!
T he So n g In Th e Sil enc e... That constantly moving energy is there in our consciousness all the time it nourishes us, and soothes us, whatever is happening in our ‘busy’ time.
I’ve been reminded regularly in the past month or so of just how fortunate I am to spend much of my time in such a place as Skye. It’s not just the beauty, or the peace and quiet. It’s the stillness! One of the most frequent comments made by visitors to our Retreat Centre / Guest House is about how well they sleep while they’re here. My theory about this is that it’s because they are able to sink in to the stillness. Naturally, ‘getting away from it all’ is much more challenging in the busyness of everyday life. Demands on our time, routines and responsibilities all vie for our attention. Being still can seem all but impossible in the flow of modern life, and especially so in a city environment. But what I find really beautiful is that when you can just stop, be still, and turn your mind away from the drum beat of routine, then another rhythm starts to pulse it’s way into your awareness. The magical paradox is that in stillness, there is always movement - the movement of energy which isn’t so easily recognized in the routine of life. A place like Skye makes it easier to hear this pulse, this beautiful song in the silence. That constantly moving energy is there in our consciousness all the time - it nourishes us, and soothes us, whatever is happening in our ‘busy’ time. This is what I think we’re meant to access in our sleep all the time, not just when we relax on vacation or on well-earned ‘days off’. Spend a few minutes just looking at what you’re taking into your sleep state before you go to bed. If you can still your mind a little, you’ll find quite a different kind of quiet that you can enter.

Why the Past is still Haunting You B y Se nior O ri gi n Ps yc hi c, Mich e lle Wa lt er MA , B A Hidden within every single one of us are ghosts - the remnants of unresolved and intense emotional encounters. Everyone has ghosts because everyone has a past. Some people are just better at seeing their ghosts than others. Our subconscious collects our experience, and if all goes well, will process our experiences. We’ll learn from them, discard what is not useful, and finally integrate each new piece of information into our sense of Self and the World. However, if experiences cannot be processed, they continue to roam the subconscious emerging in dreams, desires, and fears. Most commonly, they emerge as broken records, experiences that just

repeating around and around, always ending in the same manner. Are you afraid of ghosts? Children are often afraid of many different things. This is because there are many things in the world they are yet to learn and understand. As adults, we carry this trait on, continuing to fear that which we can't label and recognize. Whether you believe in ghosts or not is irrelevant. What is relevant is to recognize that we, as human beings, fear what we don't understand, and when we fear things, it causes us to obsess and draw the object of our fear to us. Case Study Judith, a client of mine, regularly dreams of a man she loved in high school. When they were together, they were just kids, and even though their connection was strong, she left him to pursue another man. Since then there has been little contact. They got together a few years later out of the blue, shared a few dates and intimate moments. Once again she didn't really know what the attraction held for her. This time it was he who stood her up and disappeared out of her life. Lately, even though it has been four years since they had seen one another or had any contact, she had been thinking of him, to the point where she contacted him through
Facebook and began to obsess over his profile. This is where the story begins to turn. Judith found herself obsessing over his profile, even though she knew he was in a relationship currently. No matter how she tried to tempt him, it was clear he was not going to bite and see her again. She found herself slipping into a depression: ‘What is wrong with me? Will anyone ever want me? Why do I keep thinking about him if nothing is going to happen?’ Secret dreams for the future Judith had an unfinished story with her ex-boyfriend. In reality, there is not much chance of her resolving this through talking with him or 'picking up where they left off'. Yet her mind won't let it go either. She is trapped. So she continues the dream in her mind - we will get together again and all will be resolved. I will be free and I will be happy, finally getting what I want. As I questioned Judith, it emerged that she did not in fact truly wish to live happily ever after with her ex. She was not even sure what it was that tied him to her. She just wished to see him again. In fact what Judith really wished for was to repeat the experience and this time get it right and file it away in 'memory'. That is, lay the ghost to rest! What did Judith really want? As we delved deeper (see Exorcise Your Ghosts below to apply this process to yourself), Judith discovered that her ex held knowledge of her as she was when she was young, free, happy and idealistic. Since then she had become very serious, work-oriented, responsible etc. In fact, in retrospect, this may have been why her ex broke up with her the second time. As she realized this,

it became obvious that her ex must have changed now too. And even if they were meant to get together it would never be like it was in the past. What was important was that her subconscious knew what was haunting her: I want to be young and free again. Denial If you deny yourself what you truly want you will become stuck like a broken record, continually returning in your mind to the situation where you lost what you wanted. In effect, you are hooked on the past because you are not really facing up to your own desire. Instead you are seeing that X brought this into my life and I rejected / lost it / didn't fight hard enough etc. As long as you still need whatever it was the X brought you are tied to X. Like a child is tied to its mother until he or she no longer needs the mothering in the same way, then he or she is free to move on to other relationships. As long as you still need X to give you Y, your subconscious will continue to haunt you and take you down the old pathways, looking to resurrect the path. Releasing the 'keeper' of your dream Resolving things by reclaiming the aspect which is you that has been locked away and releasing the 'keeper' or ghost which keeps this you in chains. The ghost is a ghost because he or she no longer is actually in
your life, fulfilling this role for you. All that he or she has left behind is an echo or shadow of how things were done in the past. You are an infinitely creative being. In your mind your can discover many ways to achieve your dreams. However you can only achieve your dreams if you know what they actually are. If you are still chasing ghosts then you will never find them - because ghosts don't exist! Exorcise Your Ghosts Listen to your own story - write down what happened, what didn't happen - what was your intention - what did you want to happen? This is what you are still waiting to happen. Reclaim the part of you that is still waiting, that part that wants something to happen... Write down what you want (leaving out the details or names, people, places, dates) For example... • I want justice • I want love • I want passion • I want to be understood • I want to be accepted
Children are often afraid of many different things. This is because Do a short meditation on visualizing a new pathway for this there are many things in the world to happen, one that doesn't involve going back into the past they are yet to learn and understand. or with past people. Let your intuition guide you forward. As adults, we carry this trait on, Be open to anything that comes up (except the past). If the continuing to fear that which we can't past situation appears in your mind’s eye, simply move label and recognize. Whether you past it and say to yourself ‘I am exploring other pathways believe in ghosts or not is irrelevant. - thank-you’. Allow your mind to create new What is relevant is to recognize that we, opportunities for you. Then in the future, when your as human beings, fear what we don't desire comes up, your mind will open many avenues to understand, and when we fear things, it help you achieve what you want. causes us to obsess and draw the object of our fear to us.
The celebrity of spirituality C at hy Cox ‘Celebrity’ is a fact of life in our society. In fact, with the popularity of reality television, Utube & Facebook, becoming a ‘celebrity’ has taken on a whole new meaning. Broadcasting own personal ideas and opinions has never been so easy. The spiritual realms of life are not exempt from this – the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury have their own webpages, Facebook pages, and Twitter feeds. And the Dalai Lama, some would say, reached celebrity status some years ago. The reality that these spiritual leaders have also entered the realms of interactive media is somewhat of a sign in itself of the spiritual direction of our society. Interacting with others, connecting with them and caring for them is a fundamental drive in our humanity, and naturally has been a fundamental part of all religious or spiritual practice throughout history. Not surprising then that interactive media and spiritual practice are weaving together. This raises a very important question about who we see as our spiritual role models. Celebrities are a dominant presence in media of all types, but especially electronic media. And as such, they have enormous potential power to
influence large numbers of people very rapidly. The problem when we look at the area of spirituality lies in the often insubstantial nature of what we read or see in the media. We are presented with an image, or a quote, often taken out of context. And even a book written by somebody famous is only an expression of their ideas and views ABOUT life, not a reflection of how they actually live their life, day by day. Does this mean we should dismiss everything said of a ‘spiritual nature’ by celebrities? Or by contrast, should we accept everything attributed to the Dalai Lama, or the Pope for that matter, as being valid and some kind of objective ‘truth’, simply because we’ve seen it ‘on the tele’? Well that would be going a bit far. It seems to me when you read between the lines of hype, that celebrities are in some ways reflecting what is happening in 21st century spiritual beliefs, as well as perhaps influencing the development of trends in spiritual practice. Many of us would admit to searching for meaning in our lives – in an age when most of us have our material needs met, we find it’s ‘not enough’. This is obviously very often true for the rich and famous – they often exhibit an exaggerated version of this experience. Do we look to celebrities as some kind of role models in our society? Or maybe do we look to them in order to find the common threads of life that we all face, to see our own life experience reflected in their
lives: they seem to have everything but they’re still searching. The one thing that really stands out to me as an enormously positive development in spiritual practice in recent years is the diversity which is now largely accepted in developed countries around the world. Celebrities speaking openly about their own personal search for meaning in their lives I believe has been a significant factor in this. There are far more people now prepared to explore beyond the boundaries of their religious upbringing (or non-religious upbringing!) in order to explore their inner world and find more contentment in life. Some would say that ‘The Beatles’ were among the first in driving the popularity and interest in transcendental meditation in the west in the late 60s. There have been many more in the decades since then, and it has become quite common for celebrities to talk openly about their spiritual beliefs. Most of us I think are discerning enough to read about or observe celebrities with a ‘grain of salt’. But those who have had the courage to be open about their inner journey might just be worth taking notice to. 6
The Magic of Orbs! N at alie Arki n s “Try and penetrate with our limited means the secrets of nature and you will find that, behind all the discernible concatenations, there remains something subtle, intangible and inexplicable. Veneration for this force beyond anything that we can comprehend is my religion. To that extent I am, in point of fact, religious.” - Albert Einstein, Response to atheist, Alfred Kerr (1927), quoted in The Diary of a Cosmopolitan (1971) I love this quote from Einstein - that the unknowable that is behind all phenomena is his religion. There is so much we don’t know or understand, yet so many of us think that by using logic or science, we can understand this infinte, mysterious universe and all phenomena in it. What science has actually shown is that the more we learn, the less we know! This brings me to the topic of this article- orbs in digital photographs. There are many theories about Orbs that appear in digital photographs. Sceptics say they are “circles of confusion” caused by light bouncing off dust particles or out of focus areas caused by the digital camera (http:// www.assap.org/newsite/articles/Orb%20Zone %20Theory.html). Others state that they are caused by ghosts, spirits, fairies or other paranormal activity. There are those who will never believe that they are caused by paranormal activity and that a logical explanation exists. There has been some good research done into the phenomenon of Orbs, by a retired Material Science professor at Stanford University, Dr . Klaus Heinemann (website: http://www.acviews.com/kh/klaus.htm). He has done many experiments showing that they are not due to dust or light bouncing off of particles or water. Other such as Diana Cooper (website of orbs: http:// www.dianacooper.com/orbs/orbs-gallery.php) gives meaning to the Orbs as angels, archangels, ascended masters, fairies etc. While I do believe that Orbs are a paranormal phenomenon, I do not think that we can assign a specific meaning for each individual Orb.
The Sun coming up over the mountains at Macchu Picchu. July 2009.
My outlook is that they are multi-dimensional energies, that can have different meanings to each person that looks at them. So, if you look at an Orb and feel Archangel Micheal energy, then that is what it means for you. Someone else may connect with a spirit that has crossed over, others may feel they are signs of energy portals. All these can be true, with the meaning becoming personal to each individual. Whatever your belief, or disbelief may be, I have some pictures that I have taken that have Orbs in them. The meaning of the Orbs will be different for everyone, but I do believe that there is a healing for all of us by seeing and connecting with the pictures of Orbs. I hope that when you gaze at the pictures of orbs, you’ll find healing, a connection with spirits or angels, or you’ll develop an interest to photograph Orbs yourself.

The Healing Power of Music Ancients and mystics from all cultures have always known of the power of music to heal. It seems we are rediscovering this power, and beginning to accept the mystery of this power. Most of us would be able to name an occasion when we were deeply moved by how music helped us at some point in our lives. After all, music forms such an integral part of our rituals and ceremonies weddings, funerals, christenings, even sporting events. It’s the moment when we can all share in the experience, irrespective of our differences. But how many of us could identify with being ‘healed’ and helped Anaesthetist Dr Erol Can (left), playing a yayli tanbur, an Ottoman violin through music? Yes! Music is now with Professor Bingur Sönmez holding a flute. Doctors in the Istanbul being cited as a method for healing hospital are reviving ancient musical therapy for a variety of illnesses. Photograph: Jonathan Lewis and helping, and much scientific research is being carried out to explore its richness. Needless to say, we, with all of our superior scientific technology in the early 21st century, are only really rediscovering what the ancients and mystics of all cultures have always known. Shamans throughout the ages have chanted and used drumming to heal and help people. The ancient mystery schools of Greece, Rome, Egypt, Tibet and India all held that sound was the primary creative force in the universe. And Pythagoras wasn’t only a master mathematician, he too taught about the healing power of how music helps. Music helps much more than just an emotional ʻpick me upʼ... Imagine this.... You’ve had the day from hell at work, but now you’re home. All is quiet in the house, and you can collapse on the couch and put on your favourite music CD. Slowly you begin to realise how it helps you relax and feel more like your old self. How can music help you and have such a soothing impact upon you? Recent studies show that music does much more than just help us relax or ‘pep us up’. It can actually alter the body’s physiology. Medical research is now demonstrating a direct link between music and our immune systems, in the relief of pain, and even in enhancing our mental functions and concentration. An article in ‘The Guardian’ newspaper this week demonstrated the work being done currently in Turkey - ancient melodies, based on specific tonal patterns called ‘modes’ are being used in modern day hospitals to support patients in their healing. Begin looking into the healing practices of the past, and there are examples in almost all cultures of music, and a beautiful environment, being known to be extremely important for healing.

An extraordinary quite recent demonstration of the power of music occurred in the 1960’s in a humble Benedictine monastery in France. French replaced Latin as the language of worship, and chanting was abandoned in favour of other activities. Before long a profound change occurred in the community. Monks who had previously survived on three or four hours of sleep a night became tired, and gradually very prone to illness. They were permitted to sleep longer, but this didn’t help. Their diet was changed to include meat... still no improvement. In fact, their overall health deteriorated steadily, along with their hearing. Eventually the Abbot called in Dr Alfred Tomatis, a physician and ear specialist. His advice re-introduced chanting into the life of the monastery. Within nine months, most of the monks had made a remarkable
improvement, and most were back to a routine of lots or work and little sleep! But you don’t need to learn Gregorian Chant to benefit! Try humming on your way to work, especially if you’re in the car. Join the craze in MP3 players & Ipods and make your favourite music more portable than it has ever been. You will then realise how music helps you out start the day off. Listen in, tune out the noise pollution so prolific in our world, and watch your health improve. September - Tarot Card for the Month Th e T owe r Breakthrough! The Tower card in the tarot is often represented by an image which has an element of violence. Perhaps this is because it is depicting a shift in energy which is spontaneous, and often, unexpected, at least on a conscious ‘thinking’ level, to the person concerned. The tower though also represents something quite refreshing in life. An energy will build, and then almost seeming to have a will of its own, it will change. This is the archetype of the Tower at work – the kind of change which seems to be unexpected, sudden, and beyond our control. As with all of the cards in the tarot, the Tower has so many layers, and can be interpreted in so many different ways, depending on the person, the situation, and the various circumstances involved. I like to see it as a gateway, an opening between worlds, or between dimensions. The magical universe breaks through and is more apparent in this world. We can feel ‘out of control’ of our life for a time, but it is also very reassuring to know that the energies of the Oneness are
always there, and operating with our best possible interests at heart.
