August edition by: ronnie wilson I am back or at least I am planning to be. As many of you know, Sports & More (SAM) lost its funding and ceased publication after the April 21, 2014 issue. Regretfully, I terminated my newspaper business. After a few weeks, I decided it was time to do something else. Thus was born a photo-blog idea, Ronnie’s Ramblings (RR), produced by Sports & More. RR will include parts of the original SAM and the previous on-line version (sports action photos), in a new format. RR will typically be published/updated, on Sunday/Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 1 - My ramblings column will be updated at least once per week. 2 - There will be a humor feature. 3 - A “Readers’ Comments” section will be available. 4 - Local high school varsity sports action photos will be abundant. I will be compiling a list of readers who would like to receive an email link to the latest version of RR. If you would like to be on that list, please let me know and include the email address to which you would like the link sent. Thank you for your past support and I look forward to seeing all of you again this fall. Ronnie L. Nostalgia: Gas, Taxes, an written by: ronnie wilson WEEKLY AUGUST EDITION
ith the mid-term elections in a few months and so much of the right and far right bemoaning the onerous burden of the current tax rates and their rose-tinted glasses perspective of the past, I took a moment to contemplate their myopic point of view. In doing so I realized they may not want things as they were, but actually want to pick and choose the things of the past to selectively apply them in an environment that is significantly different. Individuals and corporations both prospered during the height of the economic explosion, especially the 50s; the maximum individual tax rate was 90%, the business maximum tax rate was 50%. That is where government funding of the interstate highway system and the advancement, improvement of various other infrastructure and the cost of running the country originate. If you are going to wish for a return to better times keep in mind those other numbers accompany the nostalgia. Sure, a gallon of gas cost about $.24, a gallon of milk cost about the same and ground beef was $.39 /lb., but the minimum wage was $.50 an hour and an annual family income of more than $4,000 was considered to be well off. (In the mid to late 50s my

father bragged that he made more in a week, $300, than most people made in a month). (Speaking of gas – I postulate that the price of a gallon of gas is not that much different than the 1960s. Then gas was $.32 - $.36 a gallon since then the price has increased 10 fold, (yes, that includes deducting the significantly increased fuel taxes since the 60s.), just about the same percentage increase as inflation and the cost of most other goods. My problem with the pornographic profits the oil industry is enjoying today is that then, for my $.32 a gallon, there were multiple, up to four, gas station attendants who ran to my car to clean the windshield, check the tire pressure, check the oil level and pump the gas, without me ever leaving the comfort of my vehicle. Although, today’s gas price per gallon are commensurate with the 60s, the customer service is non-existent, by comparison. That is quite a bit of employee payroll dollars now going back to the corporate greed addicts. Mom and pop shops could be spotted every 100 feet or so in small towns as well as bigger cities. Not only did they know their custom-
ers, they were their customers’ neighbors and friends. Then big box store mega-plexes began to germinate; they could not care less about the locals, but were obsessed with pleasing the ever increasing appetite of the money hungry greedy corporate gods. I am sure the political-right and big business would like to see even more of that situation; knowing and serving the community is detrimental their bottom line. Getting back to my initial premise of easier, more peaceful and gentler times. If you want to return to that environment, remember the less than delightful baggage that comes with it. Having written all of that, I have no problem with an individual maximum tax rate of 90% and a flat business tax rate of 50%. This country prospered quite well at those rates; ask almost anybody who lived through them. Outsiders attempting to ameliorate the warring status in the middle east. The region has been in a state of local/internal war almost continually for the past 3,000+ years. What makes the US government, or anyone else for that matter, think they can change 3,000 years of a repeating pattern. Let them resolve their own problems. If what they do

is a threat to US or its citizens, or crimes against humanity, then retaliate with shock, and awe. Do not issue empty threats or ineffective sanctions. (The only ones hurt by any kind of sanctions are the people of the region. The government/ruling aristocracy will continue to line their pockets one way or another and ignore the plight of the people they “govern”. (Insert any or all of the following for the previous “govern” torture/kill/ abuse/exploit ruthlessly, enslave.)
