RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

A

s most of you are aware, I will be retiring form the high school sports publishing business at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. This was a very difficult decision, and I mulled over it for almost a year. Two of the reasons contributing to my decision were: the 65 - 70 hours per week, seven days per week schedule and driving 500 miles each week, were taking a much greater toll on me than I ever imagined they would and I was tiring of the extensive administrative activities to continue. In addition to being the owner, publisher and editor, I was also the advertising manager, distribution manager, design coordinator, accounts payable/ receivable manager, scheduler and complaint department; be-

ing a one-man-band requires the wearing of several hats. The actual coverage of the games (taking photos) was the fun part of the job and I hated giving up that part of it. I had determined that if someone or group requested and

would pay me to photograph a game or two occasionally, I would be more than willing to do that. Well.... something similar has occurred. I have been approached and accepted “stringer” agreements with two newspapers, the Banner Graph-

ic in Greencastle and the Hendricks County Flyer. I will cover up to three events each week, total. For the Flyer, it will be all local teams, for the Banner Graphic, it will be when Putnam County teams play Hendricks County teams in Hendricks County. I will get to continue to do what I love, covering high school events, without any of the administrative headaches.

I can go to an event, take photos, send them to the respective newspaper, go home and regularly be paid for my work. If my schedule does not warrant me covering a game, I can decline an assignment and not worry about having enough content to fill the next issue. (OK, that looks good on paper and reads well, but really, me turning-down an opportunity to cover a high school contest is

about as likely as me hitting the Lotto Jackpot. Seeing as how I never have and never intend to play the lottery, the chances of that happening are zilch-pointsquat, divided by infinity. One of the drawbacks is I will not be able to control which images are printed or how they are displayed. Unfortunately, I think this may reduce or eliminate most if not all of my trademark “contorted face shots. Which I love They will still be available on Smugmug and I may post a few on Facebook and/or Twitter, but I doubt they will be published in either publication. With this development, I will continue to do what I love, meet some incredible kids and stay active and visible in my community. I think I may like this. I was also considering starting a Blog to pontificate on whatever is currently tweaking my interest. That may also still happen. Stay tuned.
