RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

F

requently, when asked how I am, my response includes the phrase, “...and I have not heard from the IRS recently...” I can no longer use that phrase. Last week I received a notice from the IRS that I am being audited for 2014 and 2015. The last time I was audited, about seven or eight years ago, I provided all of the documentation to substantiate my deductions and income. I also provided documentation indicating I had been taking fewer deductions than I was entitled. (The reason I under stated deductions was on the advice of my bookkeeper/accountant. They felt if I had taken the actual full deduction it probably would have raised an audit red flag. Upon seeing I have addition deductions coming to me, the

audit, it cost their bosses, Treasury, around $2,500. I would think that might have indicated to them I am not trying to avoid my tax burden, I was actually paying more than required. Alas, apparently not. I have a few day in which

I must call and IRS agent to schedule my audit. I am sure I will again be able to justify all of my deductions, What irritates me is the hours I will need (waste) to organize the detailed paper trail the IRS has indicated I need to bring with me to the audit as well as the better part o r all day

squandered at the audit itself. The other frustrating part is the IRS is auditing a tax payer, who, if everything is not provable, owes income taxes the tax owed will be significantly less than $1,000, probably more like $200 or $300. To me that does not seem like much of a return on investment for the paper work and IRS agent’s time required to generate a pittance, in the overall scheme of federal income tax moneys collected or potential to be collected. One nice thing about egotists: They don’t talk about other people. If the front of your car says “DODGE,” do you really need a horn? The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard. Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
