SAY WHAT?
September edition
René Descartes steps onto a crowded bus. One of the passengers asks, “Would you like a seat?” Descartes replies, “I think not,” and promptly disappears. (The French philosopher’s most famous line is “I think, therefore I am.”) Punnies? Did you hear about the mathematician who’s afraid of negative numbers? He’ll stop at nothing to avoid them. Why do we tell actors to “break a leg?” Because every play has a cast. Did you hear about the actor who fell through the floorboards? He was just going through a stage. Helvetica and Times New Roman walk into a coffee shop. “Get out of here!” shouts the barista. “We don’t serve your type.” Yesterday I saw a guy spill all his Scrabble letters on the road. I asked him, “What’s the word on the street?” Once my dog ate all the Scrabble tiles. For days he kept leaving little messages around the house. Hear about the new restaurant called Karma? There’s no menu—you get what you deserve. A woman in labor suddenly shouted, “Shouldn’t! Wouldn’t! Couldn’t! Didn’t! Can’t!” “Don’t worry,” said the doc. “Those are just contractions.”

RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
I
have been asked on a few occasions recently why I decided to call this publication Ronnie’s Ramblings (RR). Why not continue with Sports & More? First, as much as I loved Sports & More (SAM), it no longer exists. It died a quick, yet painful death. Attempting to revise/revive it was not worth the effort. I published SAM for 17 years. In those 17 years it did not once show a financial profit. I lost a significant amount of money every week. The financial loses were not due to the publication itself, but to my inability to be a good salesman. I was horrible, at best, at being an advertising salesman. Upon its demise, I did not want to continue that uphill sales battle. Although, SAM is dead, I continue to use the “Published by Sports & More” tag line on the front page of so readers know RR is not some new upstart publication, but has a lineage of 17 years. Before too long the “Published by Sports & More”tag line will be eliminated.

The only current expenses of RR involve driving around Hendricks County to cover events - some gas money. Since I rarely drive anywhere else the gas expense is negligible. There are no printing costs, no delivery costs, no proof reader costs, greatly reduced graphics design costs and the elimination of seven hours of delivery time/driving on Monday mornings is not missed in the least. RR is different than SAM was, both the hard-copy and the online version, thus it needed its own name. I mulled several potential names that incorporated high school sports, feature articles and other high school extracurricular activities. Other than SAM nothing seemed appropriate. Then I had an epiphany. Writing my Deliberate Divarication (DD) column each week in SAM was a love-hate relationship including a bit of confusion. I loved writing it, I hated finding a new topic each week that would be interest-
ing. Usually, I was successful, but there were a few occasions when my writing was at best pedestrian. The second problem with DD was that I was frequently asked what does “divarication” mean how is di-v-a-r-i-c-a-t-i-o-n pronounced? I wanted/needed a less obscure naming convention. My love of words and vocabulary needed to be included in the new name, After much consternation, a triple-entendre occurred to me - “Ramblings”. This feature I write rambled (divaricated) in the past and will continue to do so here, I ramble around Hendricks County covering high school sporting events and the schedule of publication of RR is a bit aimless, (rambling), (it is;published one to three times per week, depending on the amount of content I have). Considering the above three conditions and that I am the owner, Ronnie’s Ramblings seemed appropriate.
