SAY WHAT?

September edition

Mad as a hatter -- If someone says you are mad as a hatter, they are accusing you of being quite irrational. The sense of madness here is “suffering from a disorder of the mind; insane.” This phrase usually refers not to someone who is actually insane, but rather to a more normal person who is behaving in an irrational way. The phrase emerged in England in the 19th century. Hatmakers in those days used a lot of felt that was treated with chemicals including lead, arsenic, and mercury. Unfortunately, those chemicals are highly toxic. The symptoms of such poisoning include palsy, confused speech, and distorted thinking. Today, making hats is a much safer profession, but the phrase survives. An interesting alternate explanation of the phrase derives hatter from Anglo-Saxon atter (poison), which is related to adder (a poisonous snake whose bite was thought to cause insanity). Round Robin -- A round robin is a sports tournament in which each contestant is matched with every other contestant. It’s also a petition in which the signatures are arranged in a circle, like spokes of a wheel, in order to conceal the order of signing. A round robin has nothing to do with red-breasted birds. The name is probably based on the French ruban (ribbon). In the seventeenth century, French monarchs sometimes ordered the death of the first person who signed a petition that displeased the Crown. In order to disguise the order of signing, the names were written on an endless, circular ribbon, and no one could be identified as the instigator of the petition. Later, sailors in the British Navy modified the round robin, using the wheel spoke pattern to hide the order of signing. It was not until the late 1800s that “round robin” was applied to sports tournaments.

un control conversations can turn ugly. I am not anti-gun, I am pro rigid fire-arms control/ licensing. This will not be an extended diatribe on gun control, merely an observation to consider when advocating freer, and unregulated gun possession/ownership in the United States. There are few or no gun restrictions is the middle east, South American countries, and most African countries. My question is, How is it working for them? Last week I read where two prominent republicans stated they cannot adequately comment/discuss the veracity of climate change due to human activities because they are not environmental scientists, Let me help them. Recently a study of climate change articles found that Only “24 of the 13,950 articles, 0.17% or 1 in 581, clearly reject global warming or endorse a cause other than CO2 emissions for observed warming. The articles have a total of 33,690 individual authors. The top 10 countries represented, in order, are USA, England, China,

Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia, France, Spain, and Netherlands.” The latest update states that when combining relevant research since 1991 that has been reviewed, a grand total of 25,182 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.” The conclusion is that” only 26, about 1 in 1,000” actually “reject anthropogenic global warming.” Those uneducated in climate change now have massive amounts of evidence on the origins of climate change, produced and reviewed by experts in the field, can no longer hide behind “I am not an expert” because experts have done the research and overwhelmingly concluded we are the source of the problem. Enough politicing, a little levity is in order. An update on last week’s “I am too old to do what I do.” This past Monday I had on my schedule to cover a countycounty soccer game, Plainfield hosts Danville. I double checked my hand-written schedule prior to my depar-

ture to confirm I knew where I was going that evening. There it was, “Plainfield hosts Danville at 7 p.m. I was a little late, but would still get there in plenty of time. Upon entering the parking lot I noticed a very conspicuous absence of vehicles. This was not good. I double checked my schedule note; I was where the note indicated I should be. I thought maybe I had mis-written it and the contest was at Danville. I still had time to cover most of the event even considering the drive time to Danville. I took the back roads because US 36 to Danville can be a parking lot at times. As I approached the Danville Community High School campus I noticed, from afar that there were people in the stands and players on the field. My spirits rose. As I drove closer I realized it was a football game, I was supposed to cover soccer. At this point I resigned myself to acknowledging I had erred. So, I began the drive home. After entering my house/office, putting my camera gear in its appropriate storage

location, I checked my handwritten schedule again; 7 p.m. at Plainfield. OK, now to check the printed schedules I had received from the respective schools. I found my error. The contest was actually scheduled to be played the following night, I had either misread the dates on the school’s schedules or had hand-written it on the wrong day. It is said the “difference is in the details”, in this case, the “distance driven

was in the lack of attention to details”. I did enjoy my drive around Hendricks County. My misscheduling also gave me time that evening to go to the grocery store, which was sorely needed. My cupboards and refrigerator were so bare I had a bread and butter sandwich for lunch. Not that it would hurt me to miss a few meals.
