Tongue biting and Spoile
by ronnie wilson
RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
I
6
had one of those encounters where I was not sure whether I should have verbally lambasted or bite my tongue and just walk away incidents last week I took the high road and walked away. I walked away primarily because it was not worth the effort and aggravation, nor did it feel it was fair to do a battle of wits with an unarmed man. I was on the sidelines just prior to a football game last Friday I was standing a comfortable distance from the sideline itself and was checking my camera’s ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. One of the game’s officials walked over to me and demanded (not asked) that I stay behind the broken yellow line on the field. I had infringed about six inches. I took one step back, but my mono-pod and less than an inch of my shoe were still on the yellow line. The official looked at me very sternly and in an overly demanding voice said, “I said behind the line, that means completely behind the line” He continued to glare at me and said, “Am I going to have a problem with you, because if I am, I will tell the athletic direc-
tor?” (My immediate internal response was, “Holy crap, this guy is going tattle on me to my mommy.) The game began, I stayed behind the yellow line. What I found interesting was when I followed the action to the other end of the field I saw as least five photographers, two statisticians, one TV reporter and a kid about 10 or 11 years old all standing within three feet of the sideline, which is about three feet inside the yellow line. The petty functionary official was at that end of the field and came near the sideline more than once and did not say a word to any of them, even during dead-balls and time-outs, but he did continue to visually keep very close track of me. Then I began to laugh to myself, internally. Apparently this guy did not have a metaphorical “dog to kick” at home”and I was exposed to his pettiness for a very brief amount of time, he has to live with it, 24/7/365. That story ended up being
much shorter than I anticipated. Due to my tendency to be a bit verbose I thought I would be able to fill this week’s Rambling with just a single tale. Next week’s Ramblings will not be mine. I do not subscribe to premium TV channels, I do not have time to watch much TV as it is, premium channels would just be a waste of my money. Having said that, I almost wish I had HBO some time ago. I heard/ saw online of a segment of the pilot episode of Newsroom which blew me away. The lead character goes into a tirade refuting why the US is not the greatest country in the world and rebutting a conservative pundit’s statement that the reason the US is the greatest country in the world is because of “freedom”. The lead character also delineates why the US was at one time the greatest country in the world and why it has fallen from grace. If you are a subscriber to HBO and have seen this episode of Newsroom, I apologize for the

repetition and hope you will enjoy or bristle at it again.
OK, I have almost made to the end of this week’s space. A PBS’que fund raiser is always a good way to end a feature. Ronnie’s Ramblings (RR) is looking for financial supporters and advertisers. In the first 16 issues we reached almost 8,000 readers. Sure most of them are repeat readers, but
all publications rely on repeat readers, otherwise they would not have a regular readership. Space is limited, but the rates are very reasonable; from as little as $25 - $75 per week. Typically RR is published 2 - 3 times per week, depending on the number of local events and content. End of commercial. Thank you for reading and be sure to let your family and friends know about RR.
