ince I am of official retirement age, I now qualify for Medicare. That is a good thing. Every month or so Medicare sends a detailed summary of my medical costs it has covered. Last week I received an envelope in the mail from Medicare. This one was different. It appeared to have a government check in it. I was perplexed, so I immediately opened it. Much to my surprise it was a government check for, (you might want to sit down for this), $0.01. Yes, a penny I appreciate the government keeping accurate records of our money and I would hope spending it wisely, (although I know better than that). Assuming the piece of paper cost a penny to be produced, including both of its printings (the original printing of the check form and the printing of the payee identification and amount). The envelope was probably at least another penny. The cost of postage was in the range of $0.42, (bulk discounts). That totals at least
4
$0.44 cents to reimburse me one cent or 44 times it face value. There needs to be some checkpoint of sanity when producing these types of transactions, or just keep the penny. As a rule of thumb, (the origin of that phrase might surprise you), if the check is less than $1, do not produce the check. It is an effort in futility and a waste of resources. There may be tens of thousands or maybe millions of such checks produced each year by our government. That may not total a great deal of money in relation to the total government’s annual expenditures, but it might be enough to pay someone to read a factual peer reviewed science book/paper to some of those who discount human behavior as a contributing condition to global warming or reputable/knowledgeable economists who
propose an increased minimum wage is good for the economy. (BTW – Taking into consideration, inflation since the inception of the minimum wage, it currently is grossly failing in keeping pace. I believe $15 is a bit too much, around $11 would more accurately reflect the effect of inflation. If it is within your time-frame remember when gas was $.35 per gallon, I believe the minimum wage was at approximately $1.00 per hour. For quite some time gas has hovered around $3.50 per gal-
lon (until very recently). Why should the minimum wage not be around $11 per hour? Speaking of gas prices - I needed to fill my Jeep last week. It has a 16 gallon tank and I had used more than 15 gallons since my last fill-up. I had a coupon for a $.30/ gallon discount, limit of 15 gallons, that was about to expire. I used it. Taking into consideration the recent reduction in gas prices and the coupon, I filled the Jeep for less than $24. That will probably never happen again. Of course, until a couple of weeks ago I thought we would never see gas prices less than $3/gallon, let alone less than $2/gallon. Continuing on this theme, a couple of years ago some politi-
cians were blaming the current administration for the price of gas, which at that time was around $4/gallon. I have not heard any of those same critics applauding the administration for the current decline in gas prices. It is rumored those same critics are now stating the price of gas cannot be controlled by the government. If I have this straight, their logic is when prices are high it is the government leadership’s fault, but when prices drop it is due to other outside causes and the leadership had noting to do with it. Make-up your minds folks, Either your purported villain is responsible for prices, up and down, or those prices are outside of the control of a single entity. Of course being fair and having consistency in blame and praise would be totally inconsistent with their mind-set and prohibit them from blathering about their self-serving, bigoted and inaccurate gibberish. Now for the lighter side I am somewhat hopeful
you noticed there has not been an issue of Ronnie’s Ramblings for two weeks. I had planned to publish an issue on January 5, 2015, but the computer gods deemed otherwise. On December 30, 2014 my computer converted itself into a boat anchor. My system hard drive, and my data hard drives both crashed. I lost all of my programs, In Design, Office, the operating system, Photoshop and a significant amount of data files, documents and photos. I was not a happy camper. I called my computer guru. She stated he would need to rebuild the machine from the ground up. New hard drives, new copies of all software and he would make an attempt to salvage what data files he could from my data backup disc. He was moderately successful. A burglar breaks into a house. He starts shining his light around looking for valuables. Some nice things catch his eye, and as he reaches for them, he hears, “Jesus is watching you.” Startled, the burglar looks for the speaker. Seeing no one, he keeps putting things in his bag, again, he hears, “Jesus is Continued on page 6, see RR-2

We’ve even got a drink named after you.” The grasshopper says, “You’ve got a drink named Steve?” Why is there an expiration date on sour cream? — George Carlin
