RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

his past week I decided to investigate one of the “supposed” benefits of my supplemental Medicare Part D insurance. According to the information pamphlet, I was entitled to a membership at one of several local gyms. All I needed to do was to visit the gym of my choice to activate my membership. As you have probably surmised from the opening sentence I was a bit skeptical. I drove the facility presented the identification card I received with the notification and asked what this “benefit” entailed. I was ready for “you have a free membership at this facility with the monthly use-of-facility fee”. What I received was a free membership with full use of all facility amenities with the exception of a personalized trainer, for which there would be an additional fee. That additional fee for a personal trainer applied to all memberships, not just my Part D benefit. This seemed like a fairly good deal. I joined.

My schedule that day did not permit me to remain at get a feel for the facility and its equipment, exercise areas and lap pool and whirlpool. I promised to return. A few days later I did return for my first venture into a gym in more than 25 years. I know it is impossible to tell now, but about 33 years ago I was an instructor at a Nautilus gym on the north side of Indy. I was fairly familiar with the functions of the equipment/machines and the proper use of the free weights. Realizing I am no longer 50 years old let alone 33, I made a promise to my self I would not try to impress anyone that day
with overt grunting, groaning and slinging around massive weights. I began my session with a nice eight minute “walk” using an elliptical walker. I wanted to get my heart started prior to putting much stress on it. After my warm-up walk I
headed to the resistance machines. I actually prefer free weights, but since it had been more than two decades since I engaged in any resistance training, my better judgement prevailed and I used resistance that would not fall and injure me if I became sloppy. I started with the larger muscles; legs, then upper torso, then arms and finally abdominals. I was unpleasantly surprised at how soft and weak I had become. It was a good workout for my latest beginning, or so I
thought. The next morning when I awoke, my thighs, especially the left felt as though someone had beaten me with a ball bat. Every step I took was painful, getting in and out of a chair was an effort. I had not expected this. I thought to my self, one of the better ways to remove the lactic acid in muscles is to continue to work them. (Lactic acid is what make your muscles ache after over use/abuse.) I went back to the gum the next day. This time my workout was very similar to the first day; same warm-up, same routine sequence, but a bit more resistance. Not much maybe 5 - 10 percent. At the end of my workout I visited the whirlpool/spa for several minutes to maybe relax and relieve some of the muscle soreness. The next morning I realized that was not such a
good decision; increasing the leg resistance. Nothing ached but my quads, even more so this time. It was off to the drug store for liniment, elastic wraps and heating applications. That third day I stayed home and nursed my aches and pains. Day four, I was feeling much better, so I returned to the gym for another workout. Since I was feeling so much better, I decided to push things even more than I had on day two. That night as I watched TV I liberally applied liniment and heat to my aches. It seemed to help. When I awoke on day four all of the muscle soreness had fully dissipated. My schedule did not permit me to go back for a fourth workout and I rationalized a day of rest between workouts would give my old and slow body a chance to recuperate and take full advantage of my three previous exertions. Computer Science 101 How easy is it to count in binary? It’s as easy as 01 10 11. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocaine during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication.
