RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
T

o continue my most recent venture into exercising - at one time, many, many years ago, I was a competitive racquetball player. I even won a few local tourneys. I loved to play. My club had a “Challenge court on Friday nights. There would be list outside of the court. The first two players would play a game. The loser walked off of the court, the winner played the next name on the list. If a particular winner won five consecutive games, he/she must relinquish the court and go to the bottom of the list if they wanted to continue playing; thus two new players would play. This all began at 6 p.m. and continued until 11 p.m. when the courts closed. I played every Friday night. (At that time, I had not yet developed my camera/high school sports addiction.) I would typically play 6 10 games each night. Saturday mornings would occasionally find me reluctant/struggling to get out of bed. I have been known to over indulge in things I enjoy despite knowing what the repercussions will be. The racquetball tournament season began in late August
4
and went through the middle of May, culminating in the state tournament. During the lull between the end of one season and the beginning of the next my on court activities waned a bit, I greatly enjoy the outside activities associated with the summer weather. I also got very much out of cardiovascular shape. The beginning of each new season found me panting like I had just run a mile in under three minutes. For the first couple of weeks of the season, I played myself into shape. I wrote all of the above to give you some perspective on my latest endeavors. My gym has racquetball courts; much to my pleasure. I have not been on a racquetball court in 28 or 29 years. I broke-
out my ancient racquet and found a ball. After my regular workout I thought I would get on the court and go through some of my old warm-up routines. I figured 15 - 20 minutes in warm-up mode would be a good beginning. Wrong!!! After no more than 10 minutes I was gasping like the previously mentioned 3-minute mile. This
was going to take longer than I thought - much longer. After my regular workout the next day I again went on the court for some “warm-up” procedures. This time I made it to just over 10 minutes, before the gasping began. I was improving, but it was slow. I followed this pattern after the next two times I worked out. I can now do just a little over 15 minutes of racquetball warm-up. Next time I hope to add my service routine to the warm-up regimen. I am nowhere near ready for friendly/recreational competi-
tion yet, but my forehand is beginning to show signs of returning. More importantly, my backhand is improving very nicely. I mention my backhand, because I was told early in my racquetball playing days, that I had the worst backhand in all racquetball; not the worst in central Indiana or Indiana or the US, but in all of racquetball. I subsequently took some lessons and my back-hand became an intense weapon; to the point is was better than my forehand. I liked that. The word at tournaments was to keep the ball on my forehand side, hitting it to my back-hand was sure way to lose a point. I liked that reputation. Now the lighter side. A panda walks into a restaurant and gobbles some complimentary nuts. Then he pulls out a gun, fires it in the air, and heads for the door. “Hey!” shouts the cashier, but the panda yells back, “I’m a panda. Google me!” Sure enough, panda: “A tree-climbing mammal with
distinct black-and-white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves.” I wish there were Sarah Palinisms • The Greek pyramids weren’t built in a day. • Spurt me out an e-mail. • Let’s not put the horse before the cart. • It’s not rocket surgery. • It’s all smoke and windows. • Nothing is nailed in stone. • Sometimes you have to roll the dice, and it comes up tails. Shortly after 9/11, our division manager wanted to do something to unite the company. He told my boss to assemble everyone in the boardroom and to place the lyrics of the national anthem on each seat. On the day of the event, I had filled the room with streamers, balloons, and small flags and, as requested, had placed a song sheet with the lyrics of the national anthem on each chair. “What’s this?!” the division manager shouted at me. Pointing to the song sheet with the title “Star-Spangled Banner” on it, he continued, “I wanted the lyrics to the national anthem!”— Anonymous
