RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

P

by ronnie wilson

rior to this past Friday night, I was in a bit of dilemma four local teams were playing in sectional semi-finals at two different locations. There existed the possibility of two all-Hendricks County sectional championships. That would be a good thing for Hendricks County and a hurdle for me. As good as I may be, I cannot cover two games in different locations at the same time. To compound he potential difficulty is that all of my regular associate photographers were occupied on Saturday night with something called Valentine’s Day activities. The potential also existed that there could be one local team in each of the two locations. That would still leave me with how to cover two games occurring simultaneously. Unfortunately, two of the local teams, Brownsburg and Plainfield, were eliminated on Friday night. As much as that

4

outcome resolved my scheduling conundrum, I would have much rather had to devise a way to get coverage of both sectional finals with all four local teams playing. As uncaring as the basketball gods were, they still had a sense of humor. The one game remaining for me to cover was Danville and Tri-West at Greencastle. This would be a rematch of a regular season game on January 30th which Tri-West won, 76 - 69. This had all of the ear markings of an excellent game. The other bit of humor is that the two

teams playing are both from Hendricks County and had to travel to Greencastle to play a game that quite easily could have been played locally. Playing locally would have saved travel time and gas for the schools as well as spectators.

I have not forgotten swimming/diving state finals and wrestling semi-state competition. The Hendricks County participant in the final sixteen of any event at the IU Natatorium were diver Molly Fears of Plainfield finishing 13th, and Avon’s 200 Medley Relay squad of Ana Walters, Emily Smith, Katie Qualls and Natalie Myers finishing 13th; 500 Freestyle Natalie Myers finished 9th; and Katie Qualls finished 16th

Now for the lighter side. I found the below online several months ago. It has not been marked in my files as having been used here this year, but I seem to remember retyping it. Maybe I have just reread it several times and it just seems very familiar. Even if it is a repeat, it is still funny. The student received an “A” for creativity ad and “F” as an actual grade. (I also question the veracity of the exam. The questions seem to be a bit contrived, properly worded and cover a myriad of disparate topics. Q. In what battle did Napoleon die? Ans. - His last one. Q. Where was the Declaration of Independence signed? Ans. - At the bottom. Q. The Ravi River slows in which state? Ans. -

A liquid state. Q. What is the main reason for divorce? Ans. - Marriage. Q. What is the main reason for exams? Ans. - Failure. Q. What can you never eat for breakfast? Ans. - Lunch, supper and dinner. Q. What looks like half an apple? Ans. - The other half. Q. If you threw a red stone into a blue sea, what would it become? Ans. - A wet stone. Q. How can a man go either days without sleeping? Ans. Easy, sleep at night. Q. How can you lift an elephant with one hand? Ans. You can never lift an elephant that has one hand. Q. If you have three apples and four oranges in one hand and four oranges and three apples in the other hand, what would you have? Ans. - Very large hands. Q. If it took 10 me 10 hours to build a brick wall, how long would it take five men to build it? Ans. - No time, the wall was already built. Q. How can you drop a raw egg onto a concrete floor without cracking it? Ans. Any way you want, because a concrete floor is very hard to crack with a raw egg.

Diving

Plainfield diver reflects on state finals experience When asked to reflect on her 13 place finish at the state diving finals, Plainfield’s Molly Fears (left) responded. “I was definitely in shock I made it into the finals, it was an amazing moment and I can’t really describe the way it made me feel. I didn’t think I would be able to make the cuts after hitting the board on my fourth dive. I knew I needed to keep up my confidence and just remember I am just as good as the top 8. My coaches Kayla And Mr. Cavanaugh always tell me one dive at a time and Kayla always told me I have 5 seconds and then I need to move on and that’s what I did. I had no injuries it was honestly just a tap of the feet on the board. My pride was damaged more or less, I had high hopes of being able to stand on the podium and make everyone

18

proud but I now know that the podium isn’t what you need to make others proud. I reached my main goal of top 16 and overall I am happy with my performance.

I am taking two weeks off and then getting right back at it in order to prove to myself and others that I can be a better diver.”
