RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
I
by Ronnie Wilson
am not feeling very productive/creative this week, so I will fill most of this space with a plethora of oddities and interesting bits of trivia. May 1 is National Bubba Day May 3 is Doo Dah Day May 8 is No Socks Day. May 11 is Eat What You Want Day. May 16 is Biographer’s Day. May 18 is Visit Your Relatives Day. May 21 is I Need a Patch For That Day. May 23 is Morning Radio Wise Guy Day. May 24 is International Jazz Day. May 30 is Hug Your Cat Day. May 31 is What You Think Upon Grows Day. May Day is May 1. This is celebrated as Labor Day in many countries. Memorial Day – The first holiday Originally, the holiday was known as “Decoration Day.” It was started by a Civil War general named Gen. John Logan, who was the Commanderin-Chief of the Grand Army of
4
the Republic. General Logan sought a way to help the country come back together after the horrors and divide of the Civil War. The holiday was first observed on May 30, 1868, and Gen. Logan chose that date for two very important reasons: First, the day did not mark the anniversary of a Civil War battle, and second “flowers would likely be in bloom all over the United States.” Indeed, many took flowers to Arlington National Cemetery, an activity that still occurs every year. In Alabama -Putting salt on a railroad track may be punishable by death. -Masks may not be worn in public. -One must have windshield wipers on one’s car. In California - -Animals are
banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet from a tavern, school or place of worship. -Woman can’t drive while wearing a housecoat. -Bathhouses are illegal. -It’s illegal to eat an orange while in the bathtub. -It’s illegal to prevent children from playfully jumping over puddles of water. In Florida -Women can be fined for fall-
ing asleep under a hair dryer as can the salon owner. -It’s illegal for a single, divorced, or widowed woman to Parachute on Sunday afternoons. -It’s against the law to dream about another man’s wife or cow. ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN (a guide for Global Leadership) All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom is not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand
pile at school. These are the things I learned: • Share everything. • Play fair. • Don’t hit people. • Put things back where you found them. • Clean up your own mess. • Don’t take things that aren’t yours. • Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. • Wash your hands before you eat. • Flush. • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. • Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. • Take a nap every afternoon. • When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together. • Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really
knows how or why, but we are all like that. • Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we. • And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living. Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all the whole world - had cookies and milk at about 3 o’clock in the afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.
