RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
I
by Ronnie Wilson
joined a gym a few months ago. I am not sure whether or not I am any healthier since I began regularly exercising, but I feel better about knowing I am at least making an effort. The gym where I go has racquetball courts. I love racquetball. I played almost obsessively during my mid-30s to mid-40s. I was even a state champion one year. I played three or four times each week during the season (September through May) and participated in two or three tournaments every month. I would rather have played racquetball than eat. It is obvious how much I like to eat. Unfortunately, in my middle 40s I planted my foot to make a turn on the court and felt a sharp pain and heard a dull
4
thud in my left hip. I continued to play, but was in considerable pain. I let it rest for a few days, Then tried to play again. The pain returned with as much or more intensity as I experienced initially. It was time to see my favorite orthoepod. After his examination and x-rays I was told I needed to have my hip replaced. Apparently, after a youthful collision with a tree in a sledding accident I had severely traumatized my left hip and now it had deteriorated to the point of
needling to be replaced. I was not a happy camper, my racquetball career had ended. I asked about playing after surgery and was advised it was not a good idea. The replacement parts were very good at restoring “normal” activity, but
the stress and pressure of rapid stops, starts and pivots would be more than the artificial hip could withstand. So I put my racquetball racquet in a closet and there is sat for the next 28+ years. During one of my gym workouts it occurred to me I could get on the court and go through my former pre-game warmup routine to see if my hitting skills could be revived.
This routine would not involve any stressful stops or starts and especially no hard pivots or direction changes. I did this for several weeks; a couple of time per week. I got to the point where I felt my hitting skills were OK for an almost 67 yarer old man. I also noticed there were several men who played on a somewhat regular basis. I would sit and watch them play for 20 minutes or so while I was there. I have always enjoyed watching the game, but now I was also a bit envious. Finally, I got to the point where between games I asked one of the players if he would
mind hitting the ball around with me for a few minutes after he finished his games with his current opponent. He said he would. Unbeknownst to me, I was about to have a rude awakening. Although, my ball hitting skills had progressed to a point I liked. My anticipation of ball movement, speed (or lack thereof) on the court, putting myself in a position to make a good shot were at best pathetic. Of the 20 points or so we played, I won maybe five. This was humiliating. Actually, I think I won three and he lost two. There is a difference between winning a point and losing a point. Winning a point is the result of doing something effectively, losing a point is committing an unforced error. He won quite a few points, I lost a boatload of points. I am hopeful. in the near future, he will again consent to humor me on the court.
