SAY WHAT?

September edition

World War I was not World War I - The concept of World War I and World War II is taught to students everywhere, but the naming of the wars is misleading. Winston Churchill actually referred to the Seven Years’ War between France and Britain as the first world war. World War I originally went by the name “The Great War” until Hitler came along and incited another world war, which became World War II. The Great War became World War I. Middle Ages Life Expectancy was 30 - You may think the average person living in the Middle Ages only lived to be about 30. While this is true, it’s also misleading. It does not mean that once you made it to 31, you sat at death’s door. It means that many people died before they ever reached adulthood, and the high infant and childhood mortality rate factored into the average, as those who survived childhood usually lived to be about 64. George Washington had Wooden Teeth - George Washington is known for three things: being the first president, chopping down a cherry tree, and having wooden teeth. At least one of these is certainly not true. While Washington did have bad teeth, his dentures were not wooden. They actually consisted of ivory, gold, lead, and real human teeth. Q: What’s the best part about living in Switzerland? A: I don’t know, but the flag is a big plus. I invented a new word! Plagiarism!

ast week, I did some thing that I hardly ever do, I watched a portion of the Sean Hannity Show. On the few occasions I have forced my self to watch his program, I found him to be arrogant, condescending, self-righteous, egotistical, self-serving, grotesquely overbearing, hypocritical and a buffoon. Lets be clear, I do not like Hannity. Two of the many things about which he and his ilk pontificate is the egregious manner in which some middle eastern states really have no government because all matters of state and religion are controlled/approved by a self-appointed clerical hierarchy, and the insanity of a religious tenant (right, left or middle) that all non-believers of their faith must either convert or be killed. I agree with Hannity and his cohorts that sort of religious extremism is a bit harsh. Fast forward to last week. I was channel surfing late one night, (it was more like early morning) and for some inexplicable reason I stopped on Fox and a repeat of a recent Hanity Show was airing.

My immediate reaction to his guest’s appearance was that he must be some sort of hardline Muslim with his inordinately long and scruffy beard and his angry and defiant demeanor. Much to my surprise the guest was the main character of one of the idiot reality TV series whose characters seem to take pride in being bigoted red-necks. Although I have never watched their show, I have read about it and I have seen/heard some of the characters in interviews on “news” shows. Hannity was in full support of this man’s extreme right-wing philosophy on how to handle Muslims. His approach was two tiered; first try to convert them to Christianity, which he admitted would be next to impossible, if that did not work them kill them. Is it just me or does that not confirm at least my observation of Hannity being hypocritical. While I am on the topic of hypocritical, several weeks ago a story began about an

American soldier whose release from a Muslim jihadist prison was secured by the trading of prisoners. Since all of the facts are yet to be determined, I have not developed an opinion one way or another. The hypocrisy to which I allude is another Fox talking head commented on the appearance of the soldier’s father in the parents first public comments. My first reaction to the appearance of the father was that he bore a striking resemblance to characters of the above redneck reality series. The fox talking head could only see and commented that the man looked like a Muslim extremist, then made the “logical” leap that the man and his son must be sympathizers of the Muslim jihadist activities. OK, it is time to get off of my political soapbox. For several years I have been saying that “I am getting too old to continue to do what I do at the pace and hours that I keep.” Last week I realized that statement is not true. I

am not getting too old, I am too old. This new format has reduced the number of hours and the overall workload that was involved with publishing both hard-copy and online. In addition, the revised philosophy of Ronnie’s Ramblings has eliminated a bit of the deadline pressure dictated by some of the features of the hard-copy and online. It looks like you are stuck with me for a while.
