RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

T

Jeepers & achy, breaky body By Ronnie Wilson

o paraphrase a line form an old Elton John song...The Jeep is back!” Last Thursday I went to Larkin Collision Repair to retrieve my Jeep. I had been without it for five and one-half weeks, 38 days, more than a month and a quarter I was almost giddy to have it back. Larkin’s did an outstanding job, it looks better than prior to the wreck. I think they may have washed it, vacuumed the interior, and removed a considerable amount of trash that was in the cracks and crevices. The drive from Larkin’s back to my office/house is 11 - 12 miles. It takes 20 minutes or so, depending on the absence or presence of a train crossing SR 267 in Avon. On this occasion it took me 45 minutes or so and I

4

traveled over 30 miles. It really felt good to have my Jeep back. I feel about 95+ percent back to normal, or so I thought. Last Friday I drove to Prairie View Golf Club to cover the first round of the Girls Golf State Championship. There were three Hendricks County players in the finals; Kayla Benge and Tori Treasch from Plainfield and Maddy Cody from Brownsburg. I arrived about an hour prior to the first tee time, to get a cart. I know I could not walk 18 plus holes. Much to my chagrin,

there were no carts available. They had all been reserved. I began to walk. Fortunately, I was offered a ride for the first few holes, which was a significant help. I then proceeded to walk about 12 holes. This was not twelve consecutive holes. I covered one golfer for four and

a half holes, then walked back three holes to meet the second golfer and followed her for four an a half holes. I was still two holes away from the club house where I though I might get the last of the three teeing off on the tenth tee box. No such luck. I was told the last girl I needed to cover was on either the 14th or 15th hole. I was in no shape to walk out two+ holes then walk back four or five holes covering her. I went to the club house to see

if any carts had become available; there had been a few. I asked if may use one, the guy behind the counter said “Sure $35 please.” I did not have $35 with me, so I begrudgingly began to walk away. I then heard from another man, asking if I was “Media?”. To which I replied, “Yes.” He told the first guy to give the cart to me at no charge. I began to grin like a opossum eating ...! It was a mixed blessing, riding the cart. My knees would not have endured much more walking and my overall strength was beginning to wane. The down side was as I rode from position to position, my knees, legs and hips began to tighten from inactivity. Walking had been hard on my knees, but it kept me somewhat limber. The cart

eased the stress on my knees, but I was beginning to become a huge ball of muscle, tendon and ligament tension. I am sure those around me were getting a bit of a laugh watching me maneuver and waddle in and out of the cart, then hobble to get in position for the nest shot. I finally returned home around 3:30 p.m. That gave me just enough time to prepare for the Tennis Sectional Championship in Avon at 5 p.m. Got there, did that. It was now around 6:20 p.m. The Avon Westfield football game was to begin at 7 p.m. No need to drive home. I stayed through most of the first half then drove to Brownsburg to cover the second half or so of their game versus Zionsville, in the rain. Got there did that, then went home and crashed. It was almost 10 p.m. when I walked in the door. I was in bed by 11 p.m. and slept until 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Still moving a bit slowly, but ambulatory.
