RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
T
Varmits & achy, breaky body By Ronnie Wilson
he past several month I have been bothered by a raccoon living under my back deck. I tried setting a raccoon trap. Each morning I would see the bait I have placed the previous night had been eaten, but no critter. I tried tying the bait to the back and bottom of the trap, to make it more difficult to remove and possibly increase the likelihood of catching the sneak. Again no luck. I then hired a professional varmint removal service. They baited and checked the trap for two weeks; no trapped critter. Finally, I reset and re-baited the trap and set it on its end. The raccoon would need to climb up and into the trap and with some luck, knock it over increasing the potential of the trap springing and securing the nocturnal

burglar. Ta-da, finally success, I had a trapped vermin. All that was left was to relocate it far, far away. I imagine I will again be visited by more four-footed masked bandits, but I now have a better method of capturing them. With three sports involved with sectionals last week and one sport conducting regional contests, it was a busy week. After the girls golf episode, I was reluctant to overextend myself, but I did need to cover as many sectionla events as I could. Monday there
were three sectional games and on county-county event scheduled. There was no way I could cover all four. I decided three would be my limit. I began the evening by driving to Crawfordsville for the 5 p.m. girls sectional game of
Cascade/Tri-West. (Now that I have my Jeep back, I enjoyed the drive.) I shot the first 25 or so minutes of the first half, then went to my Jeep to drive back to Brownsburg to cover the 6 p.m. boys soccer sectional game of Danville/Mooresville. I managed to cover the last 12 13 minutes of the first half. Now it was time to drive to Bethesda for the Tri-West/International Math & Science boys soccer sectional game. I arrived just a few seconds after the match
began. I again stayed for 12 - 13 minutes. It was now time to call it a night. Three soccer matches on a weeknight, three counties apart and I was finished prior to 7:30 p.m. Not a bad night. Tuesday was a bit easier. There were only two local post season events and both were at Avon; boys tennis regional at 5 p.m. and girls soccer sectional at 6 p.m. There might be enough time to drive to Danville for a volleyball match and still be home prior to 9 p.m. I will let you know how it went. The best laid plans of men, “gang aft agley” (rough translation from Scottish is “often go wrong”, as mine did. I did not make it to the volleyball match. Tomorrow, (Saturday October 10) is going to be a bit of
a scheduling challenge for me, again. At 9 a.m. I have cross-country sectional at South Putnam (all sic county schools, boys and girls), at 10 a.m. is the boys Class AA sectional championship at Brownsburg, Avon plays Brownsburg) at 1 p.m. is the Class AA girls soccer championship at Avon (Avon plays Plainfield), at 2 p.m. is the boys Class A soccer championship at Bethesda Christian (Tri-West plays bethesda Christian) and finally at 7 p.m. is the girls Class A sectional championship in Crawfordsville (Tri-West plays Western Boone). That is an aggressive schedule. My biggest scheduling concern is getting back to Brownsburg from South Putnam for at least all of the second half. My plan, (no “gang aft agley”, please) is to leave South Putnam no later than 10 a.m. That should give me enough time to get to Brownsburg to cover at least the second half of that game.
