RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

T

Why write? By Ronnie Wilson

o paraphrase an old limerick... Here I sit all broken hearted, I came to write, but can not get started. One of my favorite things to do when developing each issue of Ronnie’s Ramblings (RR), is writing this column. One of my least favorite things about the weekly development of RR is the writing this column. A love/ hate relationship, so to speak. Putting my thoughts to paper, (in this case, a computer text document design program) can be very cathartic. (Side note: the word catharsis’, the root word for cathartic, first definition is purgation, especially of the digestive system. The second definition is the purifying release of emotions or tension, especially through art.) This treatise could very well

4

be applicable to the first definition, because the contents of this column are frequently full of metaphorically expurgated/ excrement. The second definition also applies, due to my relieving myself of accumulated frustrations from a myriad of sources; government inaction, bigotry, government ineptitude, narrow-mindedness, government greed, selfishness, government dishonestly.... you see the pattern and get the picture. It also allows me to highlight the good in other people; their selflessness, their desire to help others, their generosity, their stew-

ardship of their fellow man. I enjoy writing those columns. Unfortunately, writing about the other less than desirable topics typically replaces one set of frustrations with another, or intensifies the original disappointments. As I prepare to publish each issue, I typically find myself satisfied with what I have written

and pleased that I did it. (The operative word in the preceding sentence is “typically”.) I have completely tanked this column on more than one occasion, and once or twice “phoned it in”. After 20 years of writing 38 40 columns each year, I have a great deal of respect for those who do it much better than I and on more frequent basis. It appears as though I was able to find a topic for this week; now for something a bit lighter. A South African man was sailing from East London, South

Africa, to Madagascar when his yacht ran aground and was severely damaged. He scooped up his beloved nine-year-old Jack Russell terrier and swam ashore to safety. Only when he was assured that his dog would be all right did he swim back to the yacht to save his other traveling companion—his wife. Source: news24.com At the conclusion of the divorce proceedings, a Serbian judge ordered a man to share all his property equally with his soon to be
ex-wife, including his dearly loved farm equipment. Following the judgment to the letter, the man purchased a grinder and cut all his tools and machinery in half. Source: Reuters After learning that her husband was cheating on her, a British woman decided to end the

relationship. She let her husband
know by convincing the owner of their favorite pub to temporarily change its name to “Paul I Am Divorcing You.” Source: mirror.co.uk A Michigan man clearly has not sorted out his anger toward his ex-wife. He bought the house next to hers and erected a giant statue of a clenched fist with one finger extended so that it faced her home. Which finger? Here’s a hint: It’s not the thumb, index finger, ring finger, or pinkie. Source: dailymail.co.uk A husband in Kenya told his wife that he needed to travel to his home village to visit family, but he instead rented a hotel room with his mistress. That evening, he stepped out into the hallway to call his wife. At that moment, the door to the neighboring room opened, and his wife walked out to answer his call. No, it wasn’t a trap—inside her room was the man she’d been having an affair with. Source: standardmedia.co.ke
