RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
I
By Ronnie Wilson
celebrate two birthdays each year; one on June 12th and one on November 10th. This past June 12th I marked the 67th anniversary of my coming into this world. Tomorrow, November 10th, I celebrate the 240th (birthday of the United States Marine Corps (USMC). To all of my fellow Marines, Happy birthday and Semper Fi!!! I stand corrected. Several months ago, in this space, I professed the use of a flat income tax across the board. My thinking was that everyone, except those in poverty, pays their fare share. I was wrong. It has been explained to me that a flat tax is actually regressive, in that it places a much larger, percentage, tax burden on lower and middle income people. I also thought a usage

tax would be fair - wrong again. Research shows lower and middle class income people pay a significantly higher portion of their income in usage taxes than the more affluent. Again, Not an even distribution of tax liability. Given the above, I have been rethinking my tax position, Which only seems fair in this season of tax policy presentations by the plethora of presidential wannabe candidates. Finding a tax policy/ structure that is both fair and effective is proving much more difficult than I initially imagined.
Those wanna-be who espouse a “simple” tax policy are either infinitely smarter than I am, or idiots. (I suspect much more to the later than the former.)
Things I think should be included in any fair tax plan include: 1 - Physically, mentally, emotionally wounded military service personnel are exempt from any and all taxes (federal, state and local), not their entire families, but the service member; those within a specified percentage of the poverty level are income tax exempt (that percentage is yet to be determined); all businesses, private clubs, community service organizations and
religious organizations are no longer exempt, Although it seems the apparent intent of taxation is to liberally line the pockets of legislators, bureaucrats and lobbyists, I believe the initial intent was to fund and maintain the government services enjoyed and used by all of the citizenry; roads, bridges parks, military, disaster relief, assistance to the less fortunate, police and fire protection services, consumer protection agencies, et cetera. If you or your organization use any of the above services then you need to help pay for them, If you do not share the tax burden, then you are a freeloading undeserving welfare recipient. All users should pay for all of the services they use. There is an old adage, I think may be somewhat applicable here, that states, “If we all do a
little none of us has to do a lot.” For those trying to get a freeride another economic fundamental is also true, “There is no free lunch.”. It may be free to you, but somewhere someone is paying for it, and it will eventfully all come back to us in the form of higher prices. Those prices may not increase tomorrow, but eventually they will need to increase to pay for your “free lunch”. Enough proselytizing... Really??? The Peter Principle is alive and well. My boss hired a guy who was color-blind to do color corrections at the photo lab. After angry customers returned their pictures, I informed my boss. She told me that I was putting him down to build myself up. (Sure, that makes sense.) My editor left a note on a recipe story I was working on. It read “Please be specific. Do you have to peel the egg before you boil it?”
