RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
I
By Ronnie Wilson
had an unusually interesting day last week. It may be interpreted as another perk of being self-employed and working from home. As I prepared for bed that night, I realized I had not spoken face-to-face with another human being all day, (I did have one phone conversation late in the day), nor had I seen another human being, in person, all day. It was a bit like short term cabin fever experience, but I enjoyed it. (Granted, I did not have any event(s) to cover that night which contributed to my being house bound all day/night) The other unusual experience that same day is my office phone rang only once, (the above mentioned call late in the day), my cell phone did not ring all day either. I did receive but

merely one text message all day. I do not ever remember receiving only one phone call during an entire day, no cell phone calls and a one lone text all day. It was refreshing to go from daily task to task without being interrupted by either of my phones. I am fairly certain I do not want it to happen on a regular basis, but it was quite a different day than usual, (as though I have a usual day.) Last Tuesday I had planned to watch the clowncar debacle and gross exaggeration/falsities fest.
Fortunately, my assignments for the night ran a bit long and I was not able to get home in time - darn (sarcasm intended). I did listen to and read some analysis of the evenings’ comedic flights of fancy and determined it was just as well I
missed the live performances. They were the S-O-S with a bit of extra bluster buffoonery, and void of serious substance. I am also having a difficult time considering these gaggle fests as debates. A debate is defined as “ two opposing sides defend and attack a given proposition”, not two hours or more of eight or 10 stuffed shirts hurling insults and interrupting each other producing only sound
bites and the regurgitation of trite and nebulous “plans”; an encounter devoid of substance. I propose real debates. Several of them. Pick a single topic. Have a blind draw for the first round to see which candidate debates the other on which topic. Each candidate will have one minute to make an opening statement. Allow each candidate five minutes to state his/ her position. Then allow each candidate three minutes to rebut/refute the opposition, and finally each candidate has three minutes to make a closing statement. That is 12 minutes each. Twenty-four minutes total. That leave enough time for a commercial or three and time to prepare the stage/ dais/platform for the next two candi-
dates to have their face to face. At the end of each candidates allotted time, (to the second) their camera coverage is terminated and their microphones are silenced, without exception and immediately. If nothing else, it will give some insight as to how they react to hard deadline pressure and not being granted repeated extensions and on going preferential treatment. Four of these could be done per session/night of TV in just two hours, or six in three hours. The next debate would pair different candidates with different topics. Post debate whining and complaining about format or treatment et cetera would result in summarily being excluded from the next round or two of debates. Stand-up and take it like the leader of the free world. If you cannot take heat/pressure from the press you are not fit for the job.
