RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

By Ronnie Wilson

F

irst and foremost I am not a gun advocate. That does not mean I am anti-gun. It just means I do not like guns. (I do not like asparagus, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and kale. That does not make me anti-vegetable, I merely do not like those foods.) Second, I am a believer in the original meaning of the second amendment of the US Constitution; Gun ownership for the use in a well regulated militia and “to bear arms” meant to wage war, not carry a weapon on your person. There is a whole litany of reasons I believe gun ownership should be strictly regulated, but those topics are for another column. Today, i have concerns about the logic of the NRA. I am not saying eliminate the NRA, (perhaps return it to its original purpose of teaching

responsible firearms use, not arming every citizen walking the streets to be a de facto vigilante, i.e. “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is by a good guy with a gun” fantasy. The NRA professes to be against

strict gun control because it is unconstitutional. Spoiler alert - there are already significant gun restrictions. The public is not allowed to own bazookas, war planes, tanks, battle ships, Gatling guns, canons, explosive

guided missiles, aerial smart bombs, torpedo loaded submarines...et cetera. Again, that is not my issue today. Today, I question the logic of the NRA. The NRA is an ardent supporter of keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, felons and those with mental health issues. So why is the NRA so fero-

ciously opposed to background checks on all weapon purchases? Would background not lessen the likelihood of criminals, felons and those having mental health issues obtaining guns. Law abiding citizens would not be effected by background checks. Professed “law abiding citizens” who are shown to not actually be law abiding citizens would be prevented from legally

keeping/obtaining guns. I have a strong suspicion there is a number of anti-gun control advocates who could not pass a background check and would thus be deprived of their weapons as the NRA has proposed to support (not providing guns to criminals, felons and those with mental health issues). I understand the hunting mentality and the use of guns to hunt game. What I question is the need to have a weapon that can fire 10s or founds per second to kill a rabbit. A very good friend of mine is a hunter, He hunts with a bow and arrow. That is a hunter. I do fail to see the “sport” in using a weapon that can bring death from a quarter of a mile or more away. Tracking, stalking and outsmarting the animal is hunting. Shooting from several hundred yards away is target practice.
