RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS
I
The End - Rush Hour Traffic - Changes By Ronnie Wilson
have made a very difficult life decision. At the end of the 2015 – 2016 high school sports season, Ronnie’s Ramblings (RR) will cease publication. Sports & More (SAM) and RR were labors of love for me for 20 years. I began photographing high school sports in 1985, when both of my kids were in high school. I have loved every minute of it, especially when my kids and granddaughter were the subjects. However, there comes a time when a change is needed; now is that time. The 65+ hour weeks and significant travel are taking a greater toll on my almost 68 year old body than I ever thought they would. Ergo, after RR comes to

an end, I hope to continue to occasionally photograph local high school sports, either for hire/contract by
parents, a group of parents, a team, high school yearbooks, or sports booster clubs; whether at the var-
sity, JV, or freshman level. If not, that is OK. Until the last Hendricks County spring sports team is eliminated from the 2015 – 2016 school year post season state tournaments, I will continue to publish RR.
After that, I will be in semiretirement. Thank you for your support, readership, and allowing me be a part of your children’s high school careers. It has been my honor and privilege.
For 22 years I worked in c o r p o r ate / g o v e r n m e nt America. For a vast majority of those years, I worked in downtown Indianapolis. During that time I lived in Plainfield and Brownsburg. I drove myself to work every day, (except for a few months when I rode my bicycle from Plainfield). I developed a great disdain for rush hour traffic. My disgust with it was so intense, I would intentionally get to work 45 minutes to an hour prior to my scheduled start time and leave an hour or more after the normal close of business. On the surface, it appeared I was a dedicated hard working cog in the great wheel of business/government. The truth was I just had little if

More, continued from page 5 any patience for rush hour traffic and would go to great lengths to avoid it. A secondary benefit was, I was getting a great deal accomplished during the early morning and later evening time spent in my office due to not being frequently interrupted by phone calls and clients dropping by my office to chat about some issue(s) over which I had little or no control or influence. I wrote all of that to give background for this. Last Wednesday I needed to drive to downtown Indianapolis. My destination was the Westin Hotel for a business meeting. I had a vague recollection of the Westin but I was not exactly sure where it was since I had not regularly driven downtown in 25 years.. I thought I was supposed
22
to go to the Westin hotel. I found the address of the Westin, it is 50 S. Capital St; easy enough to find, so I thought. When I approached downtown I turned onto North Capital at 21st Street and headed south. Knowing Washington Street is the zero baseline for addresses in downtown Indianapolis, I surmised the Westin should be in the middle of the first block south of Washington Street - it really was not. I circled around to go south on Capital from north of Washington Street and try again, just in case my old eyes missed it. I did not see it that time either. I circled around again. Since I know approximately where the Westin was supposed to be, I searched the nearby sky line for a building with the Westin name on it. I found it. The entrance was from
Washington Street about a third a block west of Capital. Near the entrance facing Washington Street was a sign reading “Westin Hotel, 50 S. Capital Avenue. So, the building was at least 200 feet west of Capital Avenue, the entrance was from West Washington Street and the address marker was facing West Washington Street with a Capital Avenue address. I was again reminded, by this experience, why I hate navigating in down town Indianapolis. “Why does a woman work ten years to change a man, then complain he’s not the man she married?” — Barbara Streisand “Marriage is a relationship where one person is always right and the other is the husband.” — Unknown (OK, it may be sexist, but it is still funny.)
