am happy to be back covering local high school varsity sports. I am not a big fan of the extended school year, but I do like being active covering events after a shorter break. It is a bit of a dichotomy for me; the school year should begin on the day after Labor Day and end the week after Memorial Day. The fall break should be the one day prior to Halloween and end one day after Halloween. Christmas break (or for those who are politically correct Winter break) should begin two days prior to Christmas Day and school should resume the day after New Year’s Day. Spring break should begin the Thursday prior to Easter and school resume the Monday after Easter. I could live with the school year going a week into June if needed to bring the over all schedule into bal-

ance or for make-up snow days. My reasoning - Two weeks at three intervals during the school year increases the opportunity for learning retention loss; it is less expensive to cool the school buildings in late May and early June than it is in late July and August. Extended child care during June, July and August is less difficult that three two week stints spaced throughout the school year. How did I wander into school year scheduling policy? My intent was to relate my pleasure of returning to my camera on a much more frequent basis than over the summer break. ...another
reason to title this feature “Ramblings”. I do tend to ramble from subject to subject with little connection of one theme to another. Before I ramble too far away from scheduling formats I want to revisit a topic I have mentioned a few times in Sports and More - IHSAA sports seasons. OK, just two seasons sched-
ules - volleyball and softball. I think it would make a considerable amount of sense to switch those two seasons. Why, you may ask? Volleyball can be played in most any weather, it is not at the mercy of Indiana’s fickle/erratic weather patterns. The softball season currently can begin is late winter (prior to March 21st) or early spring when winter weather and a plethora of rain/snow/ice are prevalent. Why not move the softball season to late summer/early fall when local weather is
much less volatile. An additional advantage of summer/fall softball is that players who are involved in summer camps and programs can go directly from their camps and programs into the season while their skill are still sharp. With the spring softball season, players’ freshly honed skills,, during the summer, have the fall and winter to deteriorate I am hopeful that if I revisit this schedule swap frequently enough, maybe one of the powers that be, might acknowledge its credence, viability and worth; but I double it. It is good to be back. Since I qualify as a senior citizen (now aged 67) I need to recalibrate my social media acronyms such as... BFF: Best Friend Fainted BYOT: Bring Your Own Teeth
CBM: Covered by Medicare FWB: Friend with Betablockers LMDO: Laughing My Dentures Out GGPBL: Gotta Go, Pacemaker Battery Low! Since the first time I excruciatingly tried to watch the Jerry Seinfield Show (JSS) I felt it was inane, the ultimate waste of time, money, effort and absolutely devoid of humor and or talent. For the longest time I seemed to be in a tiny minority. Recently, I found an assessment of the JSS with which I completely agree; to wit: Jerry Seinfield Show assessment. It was a show about nothing led by a guy who might be the least funny comic in the history of comics. Nothing about the show or Jerry was ever funny and how the show lasted for so many seasons is a JFK assassination level mystery. Jerry was/is a jerk and a pompous, ego-maniacal pile of landfill waste. Verily.
