RONNIE’S RAMBLINGS

I

t is time for me to get on a soap-box again. (I have a strong suspicion, I may get on my soap-box several times between now and the end of this school year/last issue of Ronnie’s Ramblings.) I never have been or am I now a fan of class high school sports. I am less a fan of exceptions that run counter to the professed reasoning of class sports; a more level playing field, especially for smaller population schools, and exceptions that are not made that would be in line with the original philosophy. This week’s point of irritation is the random draw of most post season tournaments. Seeding allows for theatrically better teams to have a high probability of meeting in the

4

sectional championship contest; which in turn would probably increase interest and fan draw (read more money). The current random draw

leaves open the possibility of high caliber teams meeting in the first round and weaker teams potentially advancing to the championship contest.

The sectional final can, and has been on several occasions, an embarrassing rout. Such mismatches do nothing for the sport, the schools and most importantly the student/athletes. The other up side to seeding is with the potential for a weaker team or teams to have a Cinderella victory,, which is also

part of the allure of post season tournaments. That is about it for this week’s tirade. Subjects that may make it prior to the last issue are things such as moving a team up a class because they had an outstanding season or two; public schools and private schools in different classes.

I know these topics have been presented previously, but I like to vent and release some frustration by voicing my opinions here. Now for a lighter item. A burglar breaks into a house. He starts shining his light around looking for valuables. Some nice things catch his eye, and as he reaches for them, he hears, “Jesus is watching you.” Startled, the burglar looks for the speaker. Seeing no one, he keeps putting things in his bag, again, he hears, “Jesus is watching you.” This time, he sees a parrot. “Who are you?” the burglar asks. “Moses,” the bird replied. “Who the heck would name a bird Moses?” the man laughed. “I dunno,” Moses answered, “I guess the same kind of people who would name a Rottweiler Jesus.”
