horizontally opposed This year is shaping up to be another exciting one in the club. So check out the calendar on page 2 and the website pcv.com.au for updates.

The social calendar got off to a “flying start” with the first club night held at Essendon Airport. With over 180 members turning up for the event, a great night was had by all. (p.14)

River Street lives up to its name. Our Club adminisrator Carly had the family SC drowned in one of our summer downpours in “River Street” with a reported 2 inches inside the car.

The usual suspects are still up there including our 2010 Club Champion Bob Hawker who now has a new competitor (Matt Stoupas) in MM1 to give him a hard time. They are also joined by Class A defector Gary Higgon who has upgraded to a very nice 996 Mk2 GT3. Class B’s loss is Class M2’s gain as our 2010 Rookie of the year, Nick Karnaros moves to M2 in a 993. Nick will have plenty of tough competitors on his hands though as Ben Faggetter comes back to racing in a beautifully prepared 993. The 993 appears to be ‘the car’ for M2 this year as not only Ben, but also Bryan Fitt and very experienced ex BMW E30 racer Manny Mezzasalma joining M2 in their brilliant looking 993’s. Of course M2 2010

champ Dean Taylor is still there in his 964RS along with Jamie Lovett who is bringing back his 911RS Replica and Greg Lovett who will put in the occasional appearance in his 964RS. This will be ‘The Class’ to watch in 2011. I’m happy to say that after a year off (well sort of) that I’m back full time this year in another 911SC and will be competing once again in Class C. It’s great to be back out there again and I’m having an absolute ball competing against my old nemesis Mark Chrzanowski along with newcomers Peter Matherson, Peter Modica, Simon Dunn, Cam Goodyear and Micheal O’Brien. In this issue you have some great articles from Matt Stoupas (Phillip Island Sprints), Chris Mason (Sandown 6 Hour) and Dean Taylor (Broadford Hill Climb). After Broadford, competition has a bit of an Easter break before heading to one of the most fun circuits we visit, Haunted Hills (Bryant Park) on May 1st for another Hill Climb event. We then head out to the wild west for our second sprint day of the year at Calder Park on May 22nd. See you at Haunted Hills,

president’s message I remember the first time that I visited a race rack where the Porsche Club was competing. It was Calder and I had just recently purchased my 1982 911 SC. Not knowing anyone I just wandered around the cars with a couple of friends. Leaning against the concrete barrier watching the cars surge past I was approached by a member who presented a plate of chicken wings to anyone who felt peck-ish. I watched as he returned empty plated to start another round on the BBQ but not before donning his helmet and ripping around the track. Behind his BBQ was a large van bearing the signage Peter Fitzgerald Racing. Peter’s act of generosity made an impression on me. I wanted to be a part of a club that didn’t differentiate between members based on the cars they drove.

Keith Ryding, Jolanda Brezovec & Deryck Graham At the Phillip Island Sprint in January we hosted members from South Australia and New South Wales who echoed Deryck’s comments. The Social Director of the South Australian Porsche Club attended our first social meeting of the year and we talked about the planned register run to Warrnambool for the Mid 911s and the possibility that his club could travel to meet up with us to be joined as one group.

Club membership and particularly this club, find a common interest that binds us together. There is no pretense to the pleasure of being together doing what we all enjoy whether this be racing or social runs.

The Porsche Club of Victoria is a strong vibrant club that is well respected and definitely admired for its organizational ability. We should be very proud of what we as members, have achieved. I say we because it is our club. It not only belongs to us but also is what binds us together.

The Mid 911 Register’s run to the Dandenong Ranges in March had as its guest the VicePresident of the Porsche Club of Western Australia, Deryck Graham. Derek was amazed at the level of organization, the number of events and size of our membership.

Porsche Club cars everywhere March has been a very busy month for the Club with invitations to exhibit cars. There was the regular invitation to enter a static display at the Australian F1 Grand Prix where we became the club with the most cars 38 in total! We had a prime but dusty location. There doesn’t seem to be a location that isn’t dusty given the numbers of people that attend the event each year.

The Top Gear franchise came to the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale and we again presented a number of cars as a display. Added to this a number of our members displayed their skills on a small purpose built track for all to see. There is a new television show on Channel 31 each Thursday at 8:00pm named My Drive. Each week three car owners are invited to wax lyrical about their pride and joy. Aaron Silluzio starred in the first episode. Other club members who will be appearing are Matt Stoupas, Aranka Young, Will Darvall and Bob Hawker. We have been invited to again participate in the Top Gear event and will undoubtedly be at the F1 Grand Prix. If you are interested in participating and whilst it is a long way off mark these events in the March 2012 calendar and watch out for the club notifications.

social corner Our first edition of Porsche Parade for 2011 sees that our year is off to a fabulously successful and literally flying start with many events already completed. Please be aware of the balance of our Social agenda for 2011, and diarise now so you do not miss your favourite event. Ensure you check our events web page for future events and dates. This year’s format is even larger than last year comprising five club nights – including the AGM, five major Social Runs, our premier interstate run the Canberra, Hunter Valley, and South Coast NSW Tour, the Federation Square Show and Shine, our Go-Kart Challenge, and of course our Annual Dinner Dance. Planning for 2012 is underway, any input you would like to have especially in relation to the Annual Dinner, and our premier interstate run will be most welcome. Please email Michael or Felix with ideas.

(prize to be claimed by 1 March 2013). Second Prize – again sponsored by Porsche Cars Australia (PCA): Items of the winner’s choice from the PCA Selection Department to the value of $400. Third Prize – again sponsored by Nillumbik Cellars: Wine of the winner’s choice from Nillumbik Cellars to the value of $200. The competition will be open to all PCV members who are financial for the 2011 calendar year, but will exclude Committee and Social SubCommittee members holding office during the 2011 calendar year. Please refer to our web site for the full Social Competition Rules.

Social Committee: If you are unaware of just who is on the Social Committee, our members are: Adrian Nelson, Carly Pasco, Felix Rieniets, Janet Conheady, Jolanda Brezovec, Julia and Colin Anderson, Keith Ryding, Neil Drew, Trevor Leavesley yours truly, and part time members Will and Barb Darvall. A great cross section of membership indeed! Without doubt the continued success of our Social agenda depends upon the injection of new people with new ideas and enthusiasm. If you believe you would like to contribute on a busy working committee, I would be pleased to welcome you aboard.

many of whom also enjoyed the opportunity of a nostalgic flight around the city and across the bay in a restored ex-RAAF C-47/DC-3, ‘Melbourne’s Gooney Bird’. The weather could not have been better, a warm clear and calm February evening providing perfect flying and viewing conditions for those lucky members who enjoyed their flight. On behalf of the Club we thank Mike Falls (snr & jnr), and their family company Shortstop Jet Charter.

Social Competition: Our Social Competition is entering its sixth year! Come along to Social Events and Club Nights and earn points to win! Whenever you may have the opportunity to support our Social Competition Sponsors, please do so and you will be rewarded with excellent service and great value for money. Nillumbik Cellars provide the wines we enjoy at our Club Nights, Porsche Cars Australia provide our Club’s Venue, and Traction Tyres provide members with road and track tyres, and suspension services all with a discount of up to 5%. First Prize – again sponsored by Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre: Yokohama tyres of the winner’s choice (subject to availability), from Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre, including fitting and balancing, to the value of $1,500

Club Nights: Our year began with an “Aeronautical Theme” at our opening Club Night and Barbeque at Shortstop Jet Charter, Essendon Airport. Now well established our normal fair includes a superb BBQ, wines including sparkling, beer and soft drinks. We cater for the responsible serving of alcohol by supplying light beer and limited wine together with plenty of soft drinks. This event was attended by over 180 members and guests,

Our Runs: This year’s Summer Run “To the Eildon Boat Club” was one of our best runs ever! Organised by Julia Anderson, insider knowledge provided by Colin Anderson, and with the run notes completed by Neil Drew, Ray Graham said he believed it was our best run in the 25 years or more that he has been a member. Firstly the drive was perfect – a great drive using Plenty Road to Yea for morning tea. Just over 100Km’s, followed by a relaxed 60k’m drive to Eildon for Lunch. It was at the Yea CFA where we were once again spoiled with a truly magnificent morning tea. They are always excellent – but this one seemed to be exceptional. During the morning tea the CFA indicated to me that they did not want any money for the morning tea, but instead requested that we make our donation to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal! I indicated that our cheque was already made out, to which they agreed to “sign it over” to the appeal. Given that this CFA had gone to extraordinary

efforts for us, all for no benefit to them, and donating their revenues to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal, after consultation with other members I made an “executive decision” on behalf of the committee to match their donation, by contributing a further $600 from the club. (Our Social budget is favourable by more than this on a year to date basis). It was money that the Club can clearly afford, and matching the CFA’s contribution in this way seemed to be entirely appropriate. The total donation of $1,200 was accepted with true humility, and tremendous applause from our Club Members. The Lunch at the Boat Club was simply outstanding! Appetizers’ of oysters, entree of scallops, main of crayfish, balmain bug, and prawns – buffet desert with the works – tea and coffee! Astonishing, I’m sure we’ll be going back again & again. It was an outstanding effort, many thanks to Julia, Colin and Neil. Hunter Valley 2011: We’re away! 37 cars and 75 people have embarked on our premier

tour for 2011. The run includes two nights in Canberra, with a joint lunch run with the Porsche Club Canberra, a stop at Bathurst, three nights in the Hunter, before returning by the coast via the Southern Highlands and Merimbula. Please contact me with ideas for our premier run in 2012. Annual Dinner Dance: Saturday 3rd December 2011. Our Annual Dinner last year had a fantastic attendance of 286. Can we beat this number and perhaps even set a record this year? The Sofitel’s Grand Ballroom with a capacity of 600 proved to be a perfect venue for us. We will be returning to the Sofitel again this year, and whilst still in planning our theme is likely to be based around “60 years of Porsche in Australia”. Please make a note of this date now. By popular demand the entertainment for the evening will be provided by our favourites Cheek to Cheek. Watch this space for details of a revamped “after party”! Scott’s always welcome! As Social Director I am keen to enlist your advice, suggestions and ideas as to the direction that Social Committee may take. Please phone me on 0411 831303 or email me at social@pcv.com.au or Felix at deputysocial@ pcv.com.au with your feedback and suggestions. I look forward to meeting and greeting you at a forthcoming social event in the near future. Michael O’Brien, Social Director AUTUMN 2011

I only service cars for my friends... It doesn’t always start that way, but that’s how it ends up. We both own Porsches, we have shared values and interests. They’re skilled and committed to their careers, same here. When I started as an apprentice at Hamiltons over 15 years ago, it was bred into the Service Team to always go the extra mile, always strive for excellence. I call it the “Hamiltons Touch”, and it’s part of my DNA. My friends deal directly with me, I do the work, I answer their questions, I sort problems. They get the Hamiltons Touch without the price. … and I’m always looking for new friends. “the car ran beautifully...the whole car was feeling more refined… A very good outcome and satisfied customer.” Stephen Marshall “my wife is very happy with her Boxster’s performance and says it even sounds better... your follow up call was also greatly appreciated.” John Mitsy

PORSCHE PARADE

from race control Welcome to the 2011 Competition season! The year started off with a packed house at Phillip Island. As we would expect the day was hot and dry, and with 5 fields of 20 cars and 16 car entrée group, there was certainly a lot of interesting cars on a fast track. Many of the competitors found it hard to get good times with the groups approaching peak track density, but Matt Stoupas still managed to set a track record with his first run. Adding to the interest was the contingent from Porsche Club of South Australia as well as two NSW entrants. The 75db limit is a problem for some cars, and we investigated with PI management the possibility of getting a95db day, but these are very limited and are only available for specific non-club events. We again ran a regularity in February, after the success of last year’s 4 hour event. Seeking to make it 50% better Michael Chapman and Jeff Thomas, who carried the load of the organisation, decided to try for a one- day-6-hour event. Scrutiny and the manager’s briefing was moved to Porsche Centre Melbourne on the Saturday, with Sunday therefore only needing to run the familiarisation period with the event starting at 11am. The weather decided to throw a substantial spin on the planning of the day, with rain starting early in the morning and gradually fading after about lunch time. With uncertainty about how much the rain would affect target times and over what period of the event, it was interesting to watch the different approaches taken. Some teams shortened the driver stints, some allocated particular drivers between early and late sessions, and so on. The winners were a particularly experienced team – so it is clear that tactics played their part.

The Safety Car was a hybrid Cayenne provided by PCA and despite all the rain there was only a limited number of short Safety Car sessions. The weather was a bit of a dampener for the larger than normal team of marshals assembled by Robin Humphries but they did a sterling job, and were a critical part of a great day. With the Regularity using one of our bookings at Sandown, and Presidents Day the other, we will have not been able to get access to Sandown for a normal sprint meeting this year, as our bookings have been reduced for the three we have enjoyed over the last couple of years to only two in 2011. This is disappointing, as our members really enjoy a Sandown sprint. For next year we will be attempting (again) to get more bookings at Sandown and looking at how we run the Regularity so as not to cannibalise the sprint access to this track.

“We again ran a regularity in February, after the success of last year’s 4 hour event.” The Committee has been exploring a limited set of sponsorship arrangements for products and services that can contribute significantly to the Club’s finances, while fitting in with the operation of the Competition events, with offerings that are of interest to our Competition members. We are keen to hear how these initiatives are being received and ideas for other potential sponsors. The Broadford hill climb will be run on Monday 14 March. This is a track we have not been at for many years, and the planning has been interesting, given that it is quite a technical and twisty track, with limited

car club events being held at it. Including a last minute switch in the permitting and changes in the way the tracks would be laid out, just to add to the admin. April is quiet due to track availability and the timing of the Bathurst and other events. May will have two events, a hill climb at the quaintly named Haunted Hills and a sprint at Calder. Broadford and Haunted Hills are two very good and very different circuits. June contains our traditional Queen Birthday double at Winton and DECA and we have a Sprint at Phillip Island in early July. There is no truth in the rumour that one of the service groups have ordered 4 sets of snow tires for PI. President’s Day will return to Sandown, after our forced trial of the event at Calder last year. Sandown seems to suit our passengers and drivers more for that type of event, and we may take advantage of the earlier scheduling of President’s Day to run another sprint day at Calder in mid November. We continue to have good enrolment in Entrée events, an initiative which has been running for several years. Members bring a wide variety of cars, and the aim is to enjoy a day at a racetrack environment within the safety confines of the way we run events. Some members come for one or two meetings, some regularly turn up to particular tracks, and some have moved from Entrée to the competition classes. New entrants are always welcome, although numbers are limited to enable us to match the coaches with the entrée driver effectively and keep a track session devoted to entrée drivers. Either Haunted Hills or Winton would be a great entrée drive – think about it! Enjoy your events. Andrew Bonwick, Competition Director

The two-seater, mid-engined 918 RSR coupe is an innovative ‘super sports car‘ – a true motor sports version of the 918 Spyder concept. Motor racing technology also dominates within the particularly light, torsionally stiff carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque. The 918 RSR takes the technology and learnings from real-life racing of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid at the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit, American Le Mans Series races (ALMS) in Road Atlanta, and the ILMC run in China’s Zhuhai to an even more powerful and intelligent level. The 918 RSR uses a highly-efficient flywheel accumulator to store power from its own dynamics when braking. This power is then fed to the front axle where an electric motor at each wheel provides an extra 75 kW of driving power for a total of 150 kW. This 150 kW is in addition to the 420 kW created by the direct-injection V8 engine – a further development of the successful RS Spyder race car engine – which drives the rear wheels and delivers peak power at 10,300 rpm. Overall power is therefore an impressive 570 kW. In the 918 RSR, the two electric motors for the front wheels offer a torque vectoring function with variable torque distribution. This additionally increases agility and improves steering response. Mounted forward of the rear axle, the mid-engine is integrated with a racing

14

PORSCHE PARADE

transmission also based on the RS Spyder race car. This further developed six-speed constant-mesh transmission with longitudinally mounted shafts and straight-toothed spur gears is operated using two shift paddles behind the racing steering wheel. The flywheel accumulator is an electric motor whose rotor rotates at up to 36,000 rpm to store rotation energy. Charging occurs when the two electric motors on the front axle reverse their function during braking processes and operate as generators. At the push of a button, the driver is able to call up the energy stored in the charged flywheel accumulator and use it during acceleration or overtaking. With the new 918 RSR “race lab” Porsche is now elevating this motor racing hybrid concept to a higher level where sustainable efficiency can be proven under intensive racing conditions before lessons learned can be transferred to regular production cars.

From the Marketing Desk The first competition meet of the calendar year was the popular Philip Island Sprints. It was also an event that attracted a new level of interest from a variety of great companies. Lumley Special Vehicles were our sponsors with representative Andrew being on hand to provide PCV members with helpful insurance information and advice. The company further showed its terrific support for the PCV by presenting a Lumley Award for the best presented car on the day. Cars were closely perused and evaluated throughout scrutineering, with Andrew helped by PCV’s own Chris Perry and Frank Wollersheim to settle on Bryan Fitt’s car, a brilliant choice for the Lumley Award.

As part of his win, Bryan also received a 3 step essential Primal Earth Gift Pack to ensure he always looks just as good as his best presented car.

We also welcomed Amanda and Greg from Power Plate® who travelled from Sydney with their amazing machine to get our drivers into tip top condition. Used by the Williams F1 Team, The Boston Red Sox, Lance Armstrong, Brett Quigley (PGA), Manchester United and plenty of well know celebs - Brad (Pitt) & George(Clooney) - are true believers too, the Power Plate® provides acceleration training designed to stimulate fast-twitch muscle fibres. Users can experience a dramatic increase in explosive strength, motor learning, muscular endurance and overall agility. In just minutes PCV drivers could enjoy the perfect warm-up of all muscles to increase their alertness and response times, critical for a really fast lap time! Everyone watched Michael Browning’s on track performance a little closer following his Power Plate® workout with Amanda - and we weren’t disappointed!

The only place you DON’T want a close shave is on the track! But our friends from Schick made sure that PCV drivers could lessen their personal wind resistance with the Hydro 3 and 5 blade razor packs.

With enough blades to last the entire season, we should be seeing some pretty fast times and ‘smooth’ drivers in the pits! As every metrosexual knows, you must moisturise! After a hard day at the track, the well presented driver will put back in what a hard day in the helmet will take away! Primal Earth performance organics made it easy for PCV men about town to re-energise their epidermis with snap packs of their fabulous essential mineral moisturisers which help rehydrate skin leaving it noticeably smoother within minutes. This fantastic day on the track was made that much more special with the involvement of our generous sponsors Lumley Special Vehicles, Schick, Power Plate® and Primal Earth. Thanks to all PCV members for welcoming their support to our club. AnneMaree Fitzgerald, Marketing

Club Night

Summer Club Night - BBQ at Gooney Bird’s Nest 15th February 2011 The ingenuity and vast social network of the Club’s Social Committee was fully on display on a hot summer evening in February (remember hot summer evenings?) when members were asked to assemble at Essendon Airport for the traditional Club Night BBQ – the first Club Night of the year. Thanks to Short Stop Jet Charter, the hanger which is the roosting place of Melbourne’s only commercial Gooney Bird (C47/DC3 to you) was thrown open to PCV for the evening. It probably helped that Captain Mike is a longstanding Porsche fan who has at one time owned many Porsches including a rare Speedster. Apart from the iconic DC3 (the noise of those engines is at least as recognisable as Stuttgart’s finest), other delights on show included a Lear Jet – the epitome of personal transportation - on sale for a mere $850,000. And the lucky purchaser will also receive a FREE Carrera 996

The plane, the plane!!!

16

Cab – bargain! Now if only we could persuade PCM to offer a free Lear Jet with every Carrera sold! Other impressive aircraft of recent and bygone eras were on display inside the hanger including an SNJ-5B Harvard once flown by the US Marines. It too was on sale for a mere $250,000. As usual, the first event of our social season brought out over 180 members and their families, all keen to catch up with friends after the Christmas break. Apart from the Club’s usual generous BBQ and well stocked bar (at least until the beer ran out), Short Stop offered PCV Members the chance to see Melbourne on a clear summer evening from around 2000ft in the DC3 for a mere $100 – another bargain! Many PCV members took up the offer, and most of the faces at the end of the 40min flight suggested it was money well spent.

what’s in your garage?

Gary Tierney’s legacy is a close family, successful businesses and, of course, a mouth-watering car collection. After growing up in Melbourne, Gary first worked as an industrial chemist for Dunlop, but moved to bendigo in 1985 with wife Louise and young sons Mark and Haydn to start their own business. They took on the Shell distribution for that area and eventually ran a whole bunch of service station outlets and serviced many others. A later switch to BP occurred and in 2007 distribution was sold back to BP. Haydn manages many of their own outlets and services several others leased to BP, from Swan Hill to Healesville! Gary and Louise moved back to Melbourne in 2005, with the businesses well set up, and enjoyed semi retirement, until Gary’s tragic death in the (last) 2009 Classic Adelaide, along with David Carra. Louise and her sons and their families live close to each other in Southbank.

the 90’s and competed in numerous rallies, first with Mark and later with David Carra. They campaigned a Cobra, the ’65 Mustang fastback, a 996 Turbo, a 996 GT3, the ’74 Carrera and the beautiful ’74 Carrera RS clone. You name it, they drove it: Targa Tas, West Coast Targa, Classic Adelaide, Wrest Point Targa. Gary was entered into the Targa Tas Hall of Fame in 2010, having completed 15 events, joining only 36 others in this elite group. After discovering Porsches, Gary joined PCV in 1998 and competed occasionally, particularly in the Winton 6 Hour. Gary’s other sporting love was surfing and the Point Leo SLSC. He excelled at surf swimming at State and National level, became very involved in club administration and was honoured with Life Membership and Legend status.

“The understated silver grey ’74 Carrera has a long rally history” Mark and Haydn work out of the family’s well situated and equipped two storey warehouse in South Melbourne, where Mark looks after Racefuels and Race Components and builds racing cars and custom projects in conjunction with race mechanic Grattan Kelly. Grattan did his apprenticeship with Gary, subsequently worked with many high profile teams and then came back to the family in 2006. They distribute Elf fuels and lubricants for F3, GT Sports cars, rallies and Bathurst 12 Hour, including 102 RON oxygenated unleaded. They also do E85 for rallies, methanol for speedway, leaded fuel for historics at Sandown and PI and F5000, and control fuel for Bathurst 12 Hour, Eastern Creek 8 hour and sports car events. Gary was “always into cars” and the first he restored was a derelict Austin Healey. He and Louise did the Tour to Adelaide about 6 times, when the AGP was there, initially in the Healey, winning at their first attempt in about 1989. Then Gary got serious in

The Cars! There are cars for all purposes and moods in this collection. Do you want to rally on the limit, rocket (?) up the highway in the nanny state, or arrive in style at an elegant PCV gathering? Highlights for me are the desirable 993 trio. There is a black ’95 Tip, an immaculate maroon Turbo and a black and orange RSCS, with orange non-standard, but exquisite, side graphics, seen with Haydn, Louise and Mark. The RSCS was raced by Domenic Beninca, who was GTP Champion in it in 1998 and is also well known for racing V8’s and very fast Alfa Sports Sedans. Gary acquired this car in about 2005. Drool on, all you 993 owners with a solitary car! A perfect 997 GT2 was Gary’s daily driver and is occasionally driven by Mark. It has only been driven in anger at Drive Bathurst.

Victoria -The Nanny Sate! The understated silver grey ’74 Carrera has a long rally history and originally belonged to Paul Stuart, who campaigned it successfully in Targa Tas. (Paul will be eligible to win a 20th Anniversary award this year). It was then rallied by Gary and David Carra. On the hoist is the faithful ’65 fastback Mustang, which has been rallied in Targa Tas, the GP Rally, Dutton Rally and the San Remo Rally of 2010. View from below demonstrates a superbly and tightly controlled solid rear axle, set up by Grattan. ‘Love the Nanny State plate! He is currently building a Shelby 500 clone for Mark, as well as other customer cars, like the whiteXP Falcon. The red Corvette is Paul Blackie’s Group S 454 rocket ship. Upstairs are Gary’s Targa Plates, running in sequence, together with an impressive collection of trophies and awards.

Broadford Hill Climb

I had a feeling that I was going to have a horrible day on the morning of Monday the 14th of March. I was in Sydney in the lead up to the day, on a ‘compulsory boy’s weekend’. I was certainly worse for wear on the flight the night before. All I remember was waking up to a near empty plane at Tullamarine- I’m surprised they let me board! Upon arriving at the track and attending the driver’s briefing, I had been grouped with the driver training. After inspecting the track in a road spec SC (scary) I had my eye in and was ready to go. Lunchtime came quickly and the times were not instantly accessible. However I was still filled with adrenaline. This was courtesy of my alcohol fueled weekend, and the fact that we were at a fast, fun new track. My novice driver, managed to teach me that I almost had the strength to rip off his grab handles (wasn’t I supposed to be teaching you!) The A class was as close as ever by lunchtime, with Phil Treloar, Rick Moscati and Bruce Young all fighting for front position. Outright was also hotly contested at this stage between Bob Hawker and Peter Fitzy, with myself (Dean Taylor) not far behind. The lunch put on by the Broadford locals was

26

PORSCHE PARADE

delicious. It consisted of gourmet BBQ, and homemade Pavlova. I think every man was grinning from ear to ear whilst lining up for lunch. There were also some interviews and filming being conducted by one Dave Schmidt for a PCV media production to be screened at the end of the year and will apparently be available on DVD for all members! (That’s the rumor anyway) As we started up again with an adjusted track layout, Ben Faggetter, Nick Karnaros, myself and the Lovett’s were ready to get down to business. They were certainly not holding back at all, looking very comfortable and at times a little loose trying to pull up in the garage! I can attest to this, seeing my bonnet pointing toward the timing table at one stage. My novice driver Richard was improving rapidly each session, having an absolute ball, with his son a witness to this. There appeared to be two battles going on in MM1. One between Gary Higgon in his new black beast 996 GT3 Mk2, Tony Carolan and Ross Taylor, also in 996 GT3s, and Harry Philippou in a 997 Carrera S. Gary Higgon

kept his head down and car straight, being the victor in this mini battle. The other MM1 contest was between Mike Herrod, Bob Hawker and Steven McLaughlan. Bob came out on top, and also took outright honors. Well done Bob!! Class B had some hot competition, being closely contested between the Baxter’s, Glenn Cook and Peter Harrison. Glenn Cook was really putting the 968 through its paces, but not enough to topple the Boxster S and its sublime balance. This seems so be an extremely well sorted Class B car.

Aaron Ireland was still adjusting to his new car for the season. (And Weltmeister were trying to adjust his clutch which sounded more like it needed replacing, a Datsun 180B would’ve beaten him off the start line!) I saw him having some nice slides down towards the finishing garage in the morning trying to make up for lost time from the start. Not the fastest way….. or perhaps it was considering his times! Pete Matherson has shown huge improvement of late, and Broadford was no exception. He was hot on Aaron’s tail all day, with Grant, Cam Goodyear, Simon Dunn and Mark closely following. Class C has a large field of front runners this season, which will make for some entertaining viewing. Aaron may have his work cut out for him! With Class D featuring one shiny freshly prepped Boxster piloted by Melanie Treloar, nobody knew what to expect. The rumor going around was that she had driven the track before, and was hungry for victory! The rumor didn’t prevail unfortunately, however the result was still close, particularly in the afternoon layout. John Swan took Class D honors in the end, with Garry Voges slotting into third. I’m sure everybody who competed would agree with me when I say that I’d be more than happy to go back time and time again to compete at Broadford. What a great track, great facilities and only one hour’s drive! So I’m giving the ‘Star of the Day’ award to Broadford Raceway for being a fantastic new addition to the PCV Calendar. Look forward to seeing everybody at Haunted Hills next round!

As seen at the Phillip Island Historics March 18-20

Photos: Ron Widdison The Porsche 956 was a Group C sports-prototype racing car built by Porsche in 1982 for the FIA World Sportscar Championship. It was later upgraded to the 956B in 1984. Development

Racing history

Built to comply with the championship’s new Group C regulations which were introduced in 1982, the car was a replacement for Porsche’s successful 936 model which competed in the previous Group 6 category of the World Championship. The project began in June 1981, and the first prototype chassis was completed on March 27, 1982, in time for the beginning of the World Championship season. Jürgen Barth tested the first chassis at Porsche’s private test track.

The 956 made its debut at the Silverstone 6 Hour race, the second round of the World Championship for Makes with Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell driving for the factory. After missing the following round at the 1000 km Nürburgring for developmental reasons, the Ickx/Bell unit reappeared at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They led the race for the entire 24 hours, eventually taking the overall win - their third win together. As they had already won in 1981 with a Porsche 936 that had used an early version of the 956 engine, their car had start number 1. The two other factory 956 followed them, so the three factory Porsches finished 1-2-3 in the order of their starting numbers.

The 956 features a chassis made of an aluminium monocoque, a first for the company, helping to allow the car to meet the 800 kg (1,764 lb) weight minimum in Group C. The engine is the same as the one used in the Porsche 936, the Type-935 2.65 L turbocharged Flat-6, producing approximately 635 hp (474 kW). The very first dual clutch gearbox was also designed for the 956, mated to a traditional 5-speed manual. An improved chassis with better fuel efficiency from a Bosch Motronic electric system was developed for 1984, being termed the 956B. In total, twenty-eight 956s would be built by Porsche from 1982 to 1984, with an unofficial 29th chassis built from spare parts by Richard Lloyd Racing. In 1983, 956 chassis #107 was used by Porsche as a testbed for their P01 Formula One engine, later badged as TAG and used by McLaren. The car was able to test some of the characteristics of a Formula One car in order to develop the engine. The 956 would be officially replaced by the Porsche 962 in 1985, an evolution in the 956’s design.

Boosted by this success, Porsche sold customer versions of the 956 to privateer teams such as Joest Racing, Obermaier Racing, John Fitzpatrick Racing, Richard Lloyd Racing, Kremer Racing and Brun Motorsport who raced them independently of the factory. The overall all-time lap record for the demanding 20 km NürburgringNordschleife circuit in the Eifel Mountains has been achieved during the qualifying session for the 1983 1000km of Nürburgring, by Stefan Bellof, who drove his 956 around in 6 minutes 11.13 seconds, at an amazing average speed (considering the difficulty of the track layout) of 202 km/h (126 mph). The race lap record is held by the same Bellof, during the 1983 1000 km Nürburgring, the lap being clocked at 6:25.91. At the 1985 1000 km of Spa, Bellof died after colliding with Jacky Ickx’s newer 962. Safety concerns over the 956 led to the eventual end as teams upgraded to the safer 962. The 956’s last win would come courtesy of Joest Racing in the last race of the 1986 WEC season, in what also turned out to be the 956’s last race. Wikipedia

epending on your perspective, ‘Moby Dick’ is either the greatest and most gregarious or the most grotesque iteration of Butzi Porsche’s original 912 concept ever produced by the Porsche factory. Like a flattened cane toad, it blurs and exaggerates almost every traditional 911 line, with the exception of the ‘glasshouse’ and the trailing edge of its doors. But then it was never built to win a beauty contest. Between 1976 and 1981, the Porsche 935 became the dominant vehicle in World Championship for Makes endurance racing, but Porsche had already made the decision by the end of 1977 to leave the battle to privateers after factory-entered 935 turbo Coupes had won the titles twice 1976 and 1977. But there was still one mountain left for the 935 to climb – the always-elusive Les Vingt-Quatre Heures du Mans. So as a one-off exercise, the race team at Weissach in early 1978 took full advantage of the new Group 5 rules to create a monster with

success in the French sports car classic its sole objective. There are no prizes for guessing why the Porsche mechanics nicknamed it after Herman Melville’s mythical man-eating whale. However like many great quests – and its silver screen sibling – Moby Dick was unsuccessful in its ultimate quest. Despite housing the most powerful 3.2 litre version of the classic Porsche flat ‘six’ yet produced, featuring water cooled heads and four valves per cylinder, to develop a prodigious 560kW at 8200rpm, Moby Dick was unsuccessful in its Le Mans quest. Despite its top speed of 366km/h recorded in the race, its enormous appetite for fuel proved an insurmountable handicap and the frequency of its pit stops relentlessly dropped it down the running order, finally leaving it in eight place outright when the chequered flag fell. So after the race it was retired to the Museum and never raced again.

“But then it was never built to win a beauty contest.”

Yet here it was, a glorious ‘failure’, on a sunny weekend in March, 20,000km away from the Sarthe circuit, at Phillip Island, enjoying superstar status as the pride of the Porsche Museum pack assembled for this year’s annual Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport. Porsche Cars Australia and the Stuttgart Museum have for many years supported the ‘Classic with special cars but as 2011 coincided with the 60th year of Porsche in Australia, rolling Museum Director Klaus Bischof made an extra effort. Alongside Moby Dick and very nearly overshadowed, was the Rothmans Porsche 962 that raced to victory at Le Mans in 1987 crewed by Derek Bell, Hans Stuck and Al Holbert. Unlike Moby Dick, the famous 956/962 series Porsches were the dominant sports

cars of the 1980s and early ‘90s, winning Le Mans seven times between 1982 and 1994. And in the nearby marquees in the Phillip Island Paddock were two equally-famous endurance champions– the distinctive 908/02 Spyder that Gerhard Mitter and Udo Schutz drove to victory in the 1969 Targa Florio road race in Sicily and the 1960 Type 718 RDS 60 Spyder that in the same year won both the Targa Florio and the Sebring 12Hour sports car race in the United States. Finally, for Porsche enthusiasts of the modern era, there was a glorious 2003-model mid-engined V10 Carrera GT, while Porsche Cars Australia also took the opportunity to show off the latest Cayman R model, which has just gone on sale.

Seeing these great Porsches so far away from Germany is one thing; hearing them was another dimension. All took to the circuit at various stages over the ‘Classic weekend – the two Targa Florio cars competing in Regularity events against humble MGBs, Triumphs and the like, while Moby Dick, the 962 and Carrera GT drew spectators back from the pie stalls whenever they came out for demonstration runs in between races and at lunchtimes. However the Greatest Show at Phillip Island was the routine striptease Klaus Bischof performed on Moby Dick, peeling away its elongated ‘what tail’ and rear mudguards to reveal its turbocharged 3211cc quad cam, twin- turbocharged flat six in all its glory.

keeping the Shelbys, rapid Healeys and Triumphs honest in their early 911s.

Long-time Porsche enthusiast and racer Peter Harburg brought his fabulous ex-0Le Mans ‘Blaupunkt’ 962 from its normal base in Europe to race at the meeting, while fellow-Queenslander Russel Kempnich had his familiar Iseki-liveried ex-Vern Schuppan 956C on the track.

Meanwhile in Group Sc, Spencer Harrison and Michael Browning were the top-performing PCV members in their 911 Carrera 3.0s.

Rusty French made a brief appearance in his familiar black 935 Turbo before a turbocharger let go, causing a spectacular flame-throwing spectacle and eliminating the car from the rest of the meeting, while American enthusiast Jacob Shalit ran his unique, long-tailed 1973 model 911 RSR. Porsches were also active in the Group Sa and Sb events for production sports cars, with Alex Webster from Melbourne, Alex Kurnick and Andrew Begg from NSW

Harrison in his Group S-modfied car ran out of fuel during qualifying, but recovered well to finish an excellent third overall in the 46-strong field by the fourth and final race, while Browning qualified third in his PCV Class C-spec Carrera and ultimately came seventh outright. The highly-modified Carrera 2.7s of PCNSW members Geoff Morgan and David Withers were the top Porsches in the Group Sc field. Other PCV members competing in Group Sc although sadly not in Porsches - were former President Jeff Thomas in his newly-acquired but initially troublesome Datsun 260Z, who just pipped Hung Do’s Alfetta GTV in the final race.

However you didn’t need to go into the paddock or look to the track to see Porsches. The PCV mounted a prominent display of around 20 cars on the main straight opposite the pits, with members enjoying special entry concessions and lunch in the pit-top Grandeur club opposite, while also commanding one of the prime viewing spots at the meeting. Despite its unfortunate clash with Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 street race this year, which accounted for a number of celebrity entries, including Porsche drivers Jim Richards and Vern Schuppan, along with Ford legend Allan Moffat, the 2011 Classic with its 480 entries attracted an all-time record weekend crowd of 17,000. Judging by the reaction of participants and spectators alike, you can bet there will be an even bigger Porsche presence in 2012.

SANDOWN SIX HOUR REGULARITY

Mark Chrzanowski 3.0 SC

Garage of winning team #15

andown is considered by many to be the PCV home track, and so the thought of a six hour team regularity appealed to a large number of members. Even the threat of rain in the weather forecast failed to dampen the enthusiasm on the day. It was noticeable however that there was anxiety (not panic of course) in the pits in the hour before the scheduled start. Before commenting on specific incidents of the day I must acknowledge the contributions to this article from Linley Baxter, Robin Humphries, Peter Harrison, Andrew Bonwick and Greg Humphries. With that proviso now in place, a good example of the pressure before the start was the normally jovial Grant Stephenson driving up behind the pits calling out for someone to shammy the inside of his windscreen, “so that he could see”.

that wouldn’t be me (again). It didn’t help my confidence to hear from Bryan Fitt that his 993 was aquaplaning down the main straight.

signalling (with some relief from Grant) made the high number of bonus laps possible.

The event ran like clockwork thanks to the brilliant organization by Jeff Thomas, Michael Chapman, and their committee, and the dedication of the PCV marshals and the safety guys (as usual). The Team Managers were also unsung heroes, in our case it was Paul Mobilia. Having glanced off the Calder wall at Presidents Day back in November (and this was the first outing since), I felt particularly nervous during the official practice (in the wet), winning brownie points with my wife Julie for me coming in 85th out of 86 cars in a 2 minute 14 second “best” lap. I heard someone comment “there are likely to be some tears today due to the weather”; I just hoped

is not a great strategy, but in this case the Stephenson-Harrison (wet) Chrzanowski-Ireland (dry) put them clearly into the top spot.

refuel after each of my turns, allowing only ten minutes for the car to rest (and change Dorians and numbers) before Brett took it out again.

This winning team also did 4 x 1.5 hour stints, which resulted in the minimum lost laps from changeovers. Due to the rain, they ignored their planned target times for the two (likely wet) drivers and set conservative lap times based on the times they made in the qualifying period. Most of the drivers managed several more bonus laps than penalty laps (especially Aaron who was brilliant) which boosted their score significantly. Matt Stoupas and assistant on the pit wall with the

The rain made things slippery for the first half of the race. I would have missed some incidents, but was on the track when Graham Gorman had an “off” near the Dandenong Road corner. Another driver asked if Graham had flat-spotted his tyres, another replied “no, but he certainly flat-spotted the car!” Tim Williams’ immaculate 997 GT3 ended up with dents and red paint from another incident. Tim was very philosophical about it, “that’s motor sport”.

I was interested to hear about everyone’s strategy for the day. The team of Linley and Simon Baxter, Martin Higgs and Juris Briedis decided to send out each driver for a one go, a 1.5 hour stint, starting with their best driver Simon to tackle the wet. That was clever if your objective was to win, and this team ended up coming second overall. The winning team of Grant (now seeing the track clearly) Stephenson, Mark Chrzanowski, Peter Harrison, and Aaron Ireland decided (after rock-paper-scissors) to separate the day into early (i.e. wet) and late being dry. Normally, betting on the weather bureau

Several teams had drivers sharing a car which added complications to the strategy. Linley and Simon Baxter were sharing their Boxster S and their strategy included hydration of the driver whilst in the car, new pads, sensible driving, and tyres. According to Linley, “A well prepared Porsche in good condition will do the 3 hours easily. During this time nearly two tanks of fuel will be used and brakes, tyres and cooling systems need to be fresh and in tip top condition”. I found that fuel was the issue, particularly as our team had decided that 30 minutes was enough time for each driver to be on the track, and so with son Brett and I sharing the GT3, it meant I needed to

It was great to see interstate numberplates on some of the cars. I seemed to notice New South Welshman, David Pennell’s, 996 4S on the track a lot. I caught up with David, Vic Watts, and Alan Taylor at Sandown on the previous Friday (it was dry) practicing at a John Bowe day as it was their first time at Sandown. Vic and Alan befriended us at Bathurst last year. They made a big impression on the Sandown marshals providing them with coffee from the “café” set up in their pit. I made a mental note that we should visit them at a PCNSW event some time as it was great to have them join us for the regularity. Other noticeable drivers included “HP” Harry Philippou, he was circulating quickly but patiently, waiting for the slow guys like me to move over, thanks for the courtesy Harry, it was appreciated. I was watching my mirrors for drivers like Indiran Padayachee in his GT3 and Ben Faggetter in his 993 also circulating quickly, and occasionally lapping me. The NinePlus and Weltmeister guys were kept busy all day checking tyres, removing broken

42

bits from cars, and generally being helpful. As the track dried out for the second half of the day the times became more consistent, with the less experienced drivers getting closer to the more accomplished ones. Just as the conditions improved, we lost our team member Dennis Bath due to a burst radiator hose on his 928S, closely followed by my GT3 (due to a damaged tyre valve), which took both me and son Brett out of the team, leaving Greg Humphries in his GT3 as a team of one. The winners of the day were the grinners but the rest of us also went home smiling, it was a great day, well organised, at a great track, and we all had fun (which is why most of us do it). The fun came from sharing a track with some great drivers, a culture of courtesy from 98% of the drivers, and the rain stopping. I, for one, can’t wait until next year Jeff and Michael; let’s have another six hour regularity in the 2012 schedule.

ll the participants met at the Porsche Centre in the city and were extremely punctual. The weather was being very kind as we had hoped for and the sun was shining. There were several new members and they were asked to make themselves known. The instructions were given and the briefing was delivered by my husband Colin. PCV Social Director Michael spoke of the importance of the road rules and our conduct on the road.

We departed from Porsche Centre Melbourne down towards Punt Road and made our way onto the Eastern Freeway where we veered left to battle with suburbia for a number of kilometers via Plenty Road. People that had not travelled that way for sometime were surprised at the urban sprawl. It was still a very pleasant drive and the roads were good.

AUTUMN 2011

We made our way towards Eildon through Whittlesea and Flowerdale and onto Yea. The drive was pleasant and quite picturesque. The vegetation was very green from the copious amounts of rain that had fallen recently. The winding road was both interesting and challenging and I can confess that on our many trips to Eildon I would scream about the high speed only resulting in Colin going faster. Some of the devastation of Black Saturday still remained with the rebuilding of peoples homes and lives still evident. The Porsches purred into the town of Yea where we headed for the Yea fire station. As the local police prowled the streets of which I am sure was only in awe of so many beautiful cars, Neil Beer the chief officer along with some of the CFA members were there to greet us. He had very kindly proposed this to the committee members of the CFA some weeks before and persuaded them to facilitate the morning tea.

46

Cheryl O’Hallonan who is a fund raiser for the Royal children’s hospital organized the club a superb morning tea, consisting of beautifully presented cakes and sandwiches and we must not forget the award winning sponges that the country ladies always produce. As usual the odd member could not resist and took away a tasty little treat for later - there was plenty to go round. Donation was made and on this occasion a decision was made to match the contribution from the run by the Porsche Club bringing the total to $1200 which brought a tear to the eye and a quiver in the voice of Cheryl who with that donation could now break her previous record. What a start to the day…but there was more to come.

and made a right hand turn that took us to Alexandra. We made our way through Thornton and straight on to Eildon where we drove across the dam wall and were treated to a magnificent view of the Lake which was and still is at over 80%. This is a first for over a decade.

The remainder of the drive was less challenging and the roads were wider and straighter as apposed to Plenty Road which is quite windy. We departed Yea and drove through Molesworth

We made our way through the gates of the Eildon Boat Club and parked the cars along the roads which wound round the lake. Some cars took the scenic tour before parking and

The ultimate motoring

“Bucket List”

What’s on your ultimate motoring ‘bucket list’? For some it’s the annual Goodwood Revival in Britain; for others it’s the chance to experience the world’s two greatest racing circuits – the Nurburgring ‘Nordschleife’ and Spa; many people want to visit the world’s newest and best manufacturer motoring museums at Porsche and Mercedes-Benz; while others would like to see the world’s largest motor show at Frankfurt, where the VW stand alone is larger than the entire Melbourne or Sydney shows. Well-known PCV member Michael Browning has them all on the 13-day ‘Ultimate Bucket

List’ tour to Britain and Germany he is hosting from September 13-25 this year. Limited to around 20 people to allow access to many ‘back room’ facilities, the centrepiece of the tour is the 2011 Goodwood Revival from September 16-18 where former Grand Prix and Le Mans winners rub panels as they joust in million dollar classics. Then, after taking in the Porsche and MercedesBenz Museums, including a special peep inside their restoration and classic workshops, the tour visits the Frankfurt Motor Show, where the new-model Porsche 911 is expected to be unveiled as one of this year’s highlights. From Frankfurt the tour explores both the Nurburgring and Spa, with hot laps at each, while also driving in Lotus Exige S models at Spa, plus a back-road tour of the famous Nordschleife. For those with more time, tour participants can attend the Beaulieu Autojumble – Europe’s largest automotive swap meet – the weekend

Lumley Phillip Matt Stoupas MM1 class winner

o season 2011 starts again, for me its back in a car and time once again to put my ‘eyes’ on! It was great to sit out last year and still work with the Club and of course the Weltmeister gang, but for some reason unknown to me, I still managed to cop the normal abuse! So Mr ‘Two Stroke’ Hawker, Tricky Ricky Moscati and Mr ‘Mad Greek’ Karnaros, I’m back!! For our season opener we ran on a Saturday for a change at the wonderful Phillip Island Circuit. This year we had the pleasure of being sponsored by the Lumley Special Vehicle Insurance Group and it’s awesome to be backed / sponsored by such a fantastic organisation. If you haven’t got your cars 50

PORSCHE PARADE

insured with Lumley’s take it from me, (I send them customers every day with fantastic results) they are nothing but a pleasure to deal with and they will save you money on your premiums (that I really can vouch for). You can also have your car repaired by your preferred repairer, so thanks guys for your support and we look forward to a great future together. The day, sunny and hot, was the order of the day. Cars steadily rolled in and people re acquainted themselves with one another and the Drivers Briefing was held. The event was attended by around 18 interstate people and 16 entree class drivers so we had a large number of entrants to organise for scrutineering and then for drivers briefing.

Drivers briefing was conducted and then the groups were called up to start the day. For me in group one I knew that this first run was going to be the most important run of the day. The air was still cool but the track temperature was starting to climb, so this was the run to make or break the day for the regulars. Open Class was going to be a close battle all day, several 997 Cup cars, Stewart Lachlan’s 996 10 litre light weight rocket and Fitzy in his borrowed ‘standard’ 997 GT3 were all there to play. Today wasn’t Stewart’s day, it was a day for the 997 Cup cars and Jan Jinadasa clocked a moderate time of 1.41… remembering the heat and the conditions. Fitzy was second

Island Sprints

pushing hard as he only knows and oh yes he beat a customer Stewart Lachlan who managed third place (see ‘Tricky Ricky’ Fitzy was trying last year, Stewart just bet him!! ) Tony Jennings in his newly acquired 996 Cup car came home forth and in time will start to push for position up he partly end of the field. Class MM1, well what can I say….. Greek Geek huh, we’ll come back to this class later. Class M2 without a doubt this will be one of the most hotly contested classes this year! Now hot because of the Karnaros dummy spit and hot because we have the likes of Dean Taylor (last years class winner). Nick the mad ‘Greek’ Karnaros, Ben Faggetter, Josh and

Bryan Fitt and all capable of winning events. Right at the start of the day an emotional Greek, literally lost it because of an alternator issue and I think because of a little pressure…. Good to see it spill over and that the nerves are creating tension!! Anyway the problem was solved, by charging the battery with Ben’s car every run to ensure no electrical / ABS issues and Nick was on his way. Right from the first run Nick and Dean were hundredths of a second apart with Ben only a tenth of a second away. These three guys battled all day, until Nick on his last run following the number 1 Silver GT3 of Bob Hawker, pulled out a terrific time of a 1.48 to beat Dean Taylor and Ben Faggetter. So Nick has one up on Dean but Dean is the master

at Hill climbs and the next 2 events are just that, so let’s see who’s on top after round 3. A Class too is going to be another closely fought battle all year. Bruce Young in the Boxster Spyder, David Trewern in his 997, Phil Treloar, Tricky Ricky Moscati and Ian ‘Ex President’ Jenkins are all going to be pushing each other along and Ken Dixon too will surprise and impress throughout the year. On this occasion Bruce Young got the honours just by two tenths over Phil Treloar. Aranka Young was third and unfortunatly Tricky Ricky Moscati had to withdraw from the day before he started due to a gearbox failure. These guys will be great to watch this year, so enjoy watching them as it will be a great spectacle. AUTUMN 2011

Nick Karnaros M2 class winner Class B – This year Class B has lost one competitor who pushed Simon Baxter damn hard in 2010 (Nick Karnaros), but Peter Harrison has been doing driver training and I know that when he puts his mind to it he drives well. Young Glenn Cook, is an awesome little steerer (obviously didn’t learn from his old man ex President Greg!) and will drive the wheels off the 968CS to push Simon hard this year. So Simon, Glenn and Pete will take their gloves off and push hard throughout the year. I believe that Simon will be a real contender for the Club Championship this year, so Good Luck Simon. Today Simon went in a time of 1.51.34 in the Boxster ahead of Glen Cook 1.52.56 and Peter Harrison 1.53.08 and then the ever improving big man Marcus Lethlean in his beautiful 964. A great class with some great competitive drivers will no doubt produce some awesome driving this year. Class C – My good mates in this class will be hard to separate all year, that being Aaron Ireland and Mark Chrzanowski. Today Aaron won the day 1.53.55 ahead of Mark at 1.54.02, but there will be days when the rolls will be reversed I’m sure. Mike Browning made his usual Phillip Island appearance, never disappoints and clocked a 1.54.88 ahead of some closely fought competition in the class between Simon Dunn, Big Pete Matherson and Cam Goodyear who improved on his personal best by over 3 seconds to get into the 1.56’s! (Huge Effort!)

Aaron Ireland C class winner This class is strong in numbers and you can see the guys all getting closer in times as they learn to master the art of driving a 911. A great class for all the rookie drivers to ‘cut their teeth’ in a 911 before moving onto bigger and better (well not really) 996 / 997’s. Class D was again a battle between oldish and the younger. The oldish won, that’s Garry Voges in a time of 1.56.64 ahead of the youngish John Swan in a time of 1.56.9. Let’s hope to see more of Gary this year and

Brent Stephen came third in front of a rookie but second generation PCV driver Andrew Matlock in his little 944 2.5 lt. Now to Class MM1 - Ahh Bobby, Bobby, Bobby, sticks and stones….. if you all recall that last year my big mate Bob Hawker decided to get stuck into me just a little.. well mate how does it feel to be pumped by a Greek Geek? Seriously, great to be back and great to get a lap record on my first lap in a new car and I might say I will definitely enjoy most of the year ahead with Bob Hawker & Co. So putting my money where my mouth is MM1 was won by yours truly 1.45.07 and with the pleasure of a lap record (more to come Bob), second

a long, long, long way back was Bob, ‘I can’t see you Hawker’ 1.46.57 and third to Graham Gorman who had to run in Group 3 all day and put up with the traffic at a time of 1.49.26, because this year we are sharing the car (Graham somehow we have to make it work for you too). This Class has many potential front runners so again it too will be fun to watch. So there you have it, a busy day at the Island for event number one. A special thanks to our fantastic marshals who can never be thanked enough and to all that helped run the day, from Andrew, Peter Witt and all the helpers Thank you, a great day had by all – I even got a kiss from Nick Karnaros at the end of the day (a Greek thing). See you all at Broadford. Bruce Young B class winner

The Dutton Dynasty: 100 years on Many PCV members know Duttons and in particular Jeff, Gay and their son James. But there’s a lot more ‘911’ in the family’s history than you might think as they celebrate a century in the motor trade. There’s always been a ‘911’ somewhere in the Dutton automotive dynasty, which in 2011 celebrates its 100th anniversary. It was certainly not a Porsche 911 back in 1911 when young Ferdinand ‘Ferry’ Porsche was just a two year old, but certainly today, when many of Stuttgart’s finest ‘sons’ grace the showroom floor at 9-11 Claremont Street, South Yarra. Three generations on, through two World Wars and three recessions, the children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren of Albert Octavius Dutton have kept a unique motor family alive and relevant. A.O. Dutton was a coachbuilder by trade when he went out on his own in 1911 to fashion the bodies for up-market motor vehicles instead of horse-drawn carriages.

54

PORSCHE PARADE

Cars in those days arrived in Australia as complete chassis requiring elegant ‘clothing’ and with his penchant for the exotic, Dutton and his three young sons, Bill, Len and Albie, soon found themselves creating bespoke bodies for vehicles such as Hispano Suiza, Isotta Faschini and others. But the company’s best seller was the hearse bodies they fashioned for Rolls-Royce chassis.

while during World War II the family made parts for brengun carriers, working around the clock to support the War effort.

As the sons grew into and ultimately took over the business, their children in turn inherited the same passion. Albie’s son Jeff and Len’s boys Peter and Graham all cut their automotive teeth at A.O.Dutton & Sons, with Jeff completing an apprentice as a motor mechanic.

Arthur and his brother Ken were both friends of Melbourne pump manufacturer and importer Norman Hamilton, who by accident in 1951 acquired the franchise for the then-largely unknown Porsche sports cars while on a business trip to Europe.

As was common in those ‘can-do’ days in Australia, the Duttons did everything. Albie and his father built a huge boat in the 1930s,

Ken became the first Australian Porsche racing driver in early 1952 when he gave Hamilton’s newly-arrived 356 Coupe its competition debut

The Dutton family’s first brush with Porsche came in the early 1950s when brothers Len and Albie raced at Tracey’s Speedway in Maribyrnong and Len drove a car owned by Arthur Wylie.

Being mates, Arthur Wylie approached Len and Albie about becoming official Porsche repairers and the agreement struck in 1957 lasted more than a decade. Not that Duttons and Porsches were strangers then. From Porsche’s earlier days in Australia, various 356 models from road to rally cars had found their way into the Dutton body show at 341 Burney Street, Richmond and by the time their appointment became official, the place was full of Porsches. Young Jeff Dutton in particular was fascinated by them. His first car when he got his licence in 1965 was a 1961 356B coupe that originally belonged to Lionel Rockman, brother of later Melbourne Lord Mayor Irving Rockman. He bought it as a wreck, repaired it, and not long afterwards it was replaced by a 1964 356C that he put through a similar metamorphis. Duttons by then had expanded into the new car business and were agents for

Fiat, Isuzu Bellet and Mitsubishi Colt, while also handling pre-delivery for W.H.Lowe & Co who distributed Ferrari and Lancia. Citroen followed in 1969-1989, while for some years Duttons also managed distribution and dealer-preparation of Alfa Romeo and the ubiquitous Lightburn Zeta mini car for Lightburn Industries. As Jeff puts it, they had the motor industry covered from ‘A’ to ‘Z’!

Michael Stillwell, Trevor Newnes, Will Darvall and Barbara Darvall (then Barbara Clearihan), Jeff was mixing in expanding Porsche circles and found himself buying and selling cars to a willing market.

Jeff completed his apprenticeship replacing head gaskets on 105 and 2600-series Alfa Romeos in the mid-1960s, but apart from some thrilling sideways rides around the Richmond Boulevard with his uncle Bill at 130 miles an hour in a Ferrari 275 GTB and a brief flirtation with a couple of Fiat 124 coupes, he was not overly Italian influenced. Instead, he soon migrated back to Porsches, with a 356A Speedster now owned by Australian 356 Register foundation member Rob Griffiths passing through his hands in the late 1960s. His first attempt at what soon became his trademark hot-rodding of his Porsches came in the mid-1970s when he purchased as 912 coupe, replaced its four cylinder 1600cc engine with a ‘six’ from a 911 2.2S, lowered it, fitted fat wheels and painted it Signal Yellow. As an early member of the Porsche Club of Victoria – he carries Membership No. 17 – along with Bruce Harris, Kerry Reynolds,

Duttons found their Porsche connection in the early 1950s when Jeff’s Uncle Len raced in Speedway driving for Arthur Wylie who later became Australia’s first Porsche dealer. AUTUMN 2011

In 1975 he acquired one of the original Australian-delivered Carrera 2.7 RS models first owned by the late John Dawson-Damer. It was white and Jeff recalls paying $21,000 for it. It later went to Porsche racer Peter Fitzgerald. Then followed the wide-bodied Porsche 911 Turbo show car from the 1973 Paris Salon that was converted to 3.0 RSR specs and raced by Porsche distributor Alan Hamilton under the Jag Jeans banner in early 1976. Jeff paid $41,000 for it and some years and several owners and transactions later sold it for $90,000. But more interesting was the genuine 1973-model 2.8 RSR now owned by club member Ian Henderson that he traded. It was formerly owned by Bob Jane, who had painted it pearl white for a T-Mart display duties. However Jeff returned it to the factory black livery that it wore when Perth driver Ray Thackwell drove it to win the 1974 West Australian Sports Car Championship, and it became the star of a prominent series of Castrol GTX advertisements provocatively titled ‘Darling, of course I love you more than the car!’ Yeah, right! A few years later Jeff decided to hot rod a Speedster and acquired the 1958 356A model that previously belonged to (PCV member) John Edwards, who then ran South Yarra performance car specialists, Motorfast. By the time Jeff had finished with it, the silver Speedster wore a bumper-less 356B front clip, fat front and rear flares covering French Borbett mags and had a John Gregory-built 1720cc ‘stroker’ engine pumping out around 140HP under its engine lid. PCV Club member Ian Begley has owned it now for many years and it still looks as horny as it did more than 40 years ago. Duttons in Burnley was now becoming a Mecca for people with interesting cars, whether to buy them out front to have them repaired and repainted out the back and the forecourt on Saturday mornings was the place to meet friends and kick tyres. So Jeff acquired the agency for Gemballa and soon some wickedly fast slope-nose 930 Turbos gave them more reason to gather and gape. With the recession storm clouds looming in 1989, the various members of the Dutton family decided to go their own way in

business and the Burnley Street freehold was sold. It might not have been the most prudent time for a change in location, but Jeff headed straight for light-industrial Church Street, Richmond with his share. Just 12 months or so earlier, his auto-dynasty friend of many years’ standing - Alan Hamilton had invested around $16 million into the former Bryant & May match business at No 560 Church Street, ultimately creating what was possibly the world’s finest new Porsche car dealership of its time. Suddenly a sleepy corner of Richmond became the epicenter of cool for enthusiasts! A run-down former chocolate factory, which had also seen better days as a mattress factory, a dry cleaners and more recently, an automotive sunroof and trim shop, beckoned enticingly, almost dead opposite at No 525. Jeff, his wife Gay and a team of willing helpers including his father Albie and close friend Pat Coram, scraped truck-loads of glue from the floor, removed the false ceiling to expose faded blue, but sound Oregon beams, skylight panels and silver foil insulation and knocked massive holes in the walls to let in the light through expanses of pane glass. He now had the ‘garage’ he’d always wanted, but the walls looked bare, so the Duttons employed their own brand of decoration. While Gay taught herself to paint cars, replicating some of the great scenes in motorsport over the years on large canvasses which daubed the walls, Jeff re-possessed some of his childhood toys and scattered them around the building . . . in antique brass and glass display cabinets, or dangling by piano wire from the ceiling.

But you can only spend so long in a museum, so Jeff looked for another way to break the ice with customers while at the same time encouraging them to become ‘regulars’. The result was his trend-setting Cafe Veloce run by vogue Chapel Street restaurateur Arnaldo Terzini that attracted high-profile customers that might never have ventured into an upmarked used exotic sporting car showroom. “We didn’t create Cafe Veloce to make money,” said Jeff. “The idea was to make people feel comfortable and at home. Many used it just as a coffee shop and we had regulars for

“Darling, of course I love you more than the car”. This provocative image and advertising tag for Castrol GTX made Jeff Dutton’s 1974 Carrera 2.8RS an Australian supercar pin-up in the mid1980s. breakfast, morning tea and lunch. They weren’t necessarily car people either – they just liked the atmosphere – and many were women.” As the ultimate accolade, Duttons’ ‘coffee and cars’ concept was then mimicked by several other exotic car shops in Sydney and Adelaide. Shortly after moving in, Jeff and his friend Pat Coram created what remains one of the world’s most striking customised Porsches – the Silver Bullet. “We were having a few wines at a local restaurant and we discussed building a car like the spectacular Bonneville Salt Lakes landspeed record cars of the 1930s,” Jeff recalled. “We drew up the car on a serviette right there and that’s what we built.” The underpinning of the Silver Bullet was a midengined Porsche 914 that had been modified by PCV member Greg Lovett for club racing and sported a potent 2.8-litre engine plus 911 RSR suspension and brakes, but as Jeff and Pat wanted a much smoother 1950s look, its angular body was replaced by one from a left hand drive 1956-model Continental coupe that Jeff bought from 356 specialist Greg O’Keefe. Custom car specialist Henk Van Duin then completed the tricky mating process, which involved chopping and stretching the Continental to fit the longer 914 wheelbase, fitting a radial snorkel to replace the 356’s rear window and adding a periscope rear view mirror on the roof for reversing. Finally, the whole steel and alloy car was painted silver, with a matching green suede interior. It stopped the traffic when Jeff and Pat ran it in the Grand Prix Rally and then Targa Tasmania and it’s now turning heads in the United States, where it is part of an enthusiast’s collection.

Celebrity visitors to Duttons at 525 Church Street included Barry Humphries (left), World F1 Champion Niki Lauda (right) and Jerry Seinfeld (below) As well as car perves and automotive power brokers, the old chocolate factory at 525 Church Street also attracted celebrities like flies and being celebrities they wanted to leave their mark . . . . on its walls. The late 1967 World Champion Denny Hulme was the first to do it and it then became obligatory for every visiting celebrity to follow suit: Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Hawke, Gerry Lewis, Niki Lauda, Kylie Minogue, Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Allan Moffat, Alan Jones, Wayne Gardner, the late Roger Clark, to name just some. And what they didn’t sign, Gay covered with her motoring and motorsport artwork, which soon began attracting commissions from high profile individuals and organisations, including the Australian Grand Prix Corporation. During this time Duttons became a focal point for another growing group of enthusiasts attracted to a new concept in motor sport – the Touring Road Event. The late John Blanden came up with the idea of a roving sealed road rally for enthusiasts and their cars from Melbourne to the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide and from 1990-2000 Duttons became the event’s naming sponsor and Victorian headquarters. The Dutton Grand Prix rallies probably brought more enthusiasts into organised

motorsport during this decade than any other single event, many going on to faster things, such as Targa Tasmania. At its peak in 1995 – the last event run to Adelaide before the Grand Prix was hijacked to Melbourne, the Dutton Rally attracted a field of 400 cars, with the Competition division won by Jim Richards in a 993-series Porsche 911 Turbo and with your writer beside him on the podium after calling the notes. Let’s just say I needed Jim a little more than he needed me! The Dutton Rallies also became the platform for what became the famous Dutton parties staged in a number of towns en route, after which most thoughts of serious navigation or trophies were usually lost in glasses of Berocca! It all paid off back at 525 Church Street where used Porsches of all ages were driving out the door at the rate of more than three a week – many of them into the hands of Porsche Club members. Remember, these were the days before Weltmeister, RSR and others selling used Porsches and Hamiltons weren’t really interested handling in the older cars, so may trade-ins drove across the road. Now ‘home’ for Duttons is a very different architectural glass, steel and concrete showroom at (appropriately) 9-11 Claremont Street, South Yarra.

Four generations of Duttons pictured in the early 1980s – L-R Jeff’s father Albie, proud six year-old James, Grandfather Albert and Jeff with the battery-powered Bugatti Type 35 replica that Albie and Albert built for his birthday. The move in late 2006 came after Jeff looking at redeveloping the Church Street showroom but the economics of putting a new multi-level structure on what was really a small block just didn’t stack up. So he went out on a limb and embarked on a $32 million project on the South Yarra site. Like Church Street (and Burney Street before it), Claremont Street was well below most enthusiasts’ radar, but since Duttons moved in, the street has been jumping. Soon to be completed across the road will be a new George Calombaris eatery in an area that is fast becoming chic restaurant city. On first sight, the showroom seems to house a more eclectic collection of sporting cars than the Porsche-heavy selection at Church Street, but Jeff points at the figures to show that the mix is much the same. And PCV members are still well represented amongst them. The move brought another member of the Dutton family into the frame – Jeff and Gay’s daughter Simone – who through her graphic design business Sugar Free wrapped the showroom’s angular supporting columns with photographs of Church Street capturing some of the former garage’s great moments. So, after around 46 years in the business, how long will Jeff Dutton remain the face of Duttons? “My grand-father worked in the family business until he died aged 94; my father was here until he was 86, I’m feeling pretty healthy and James is now 36 and he’s about to get married and hopefully add to the tree,” said Jeff. “I think there will be a Dutton around for Porsche’s 100th year celebrations in 2048!”

For more than a decade from the late 1980s Duttons at 525 Church Street, Richmond was the Mecca for motoring enthusiasts in Melbourne.

Jeff took part in the historic Tour Auto in France in the late 1990s in the Porsche 906 now owned by PCV member Ian Henderson. AUTUMN 2011

Run to Queenscliff

Sunday 23rd of January

Boxster/Cayman & Torque Tube Registers

Sunday 23rd of January started fine and cool with a forecast for a warmer day to come. I start with this as the weather was tailor made for a Porsche Club run and no-one could fail to enjoy driving their babies on a day like this. We all gathered at the Melton McDonalds more or less by the appointed time with one or two members making a short detour to the “other” McDonalds in Melton or, having missed the exit, a drive up the highway towards Ballarat until they could legally do an about face. But having gathered the seventeen cars all together (three more were joining us in Geelong) there was the obligatory briefing and we were off! From near the front of the ‘procession’ it was quite impressive. Nine Boxsters, Five 944’s and a smattering of others namely a 996, 964 and Will and Barbara’s 1955 Spyder - a fantastic sight! After Geelong we were joined by another 944, a 997 and a Maserati 4.2 GT. Any enthusiasts dream parade and indeed heads were turning as we drove through Geelong.. The object of the day was of course lunch at the Queenscliff Hotel but first some driving through different country. Morning tea was in Geelong so the day was basically split into a country run followed by a coastal run - something for everyone. We soon cleared Melton and took the scenic run south past the Melton Reservoir then through Exford, Balliang, Anakie, entering Geelong via the Midland Highway, the roads were flat and fast with some spirited overtaking of slower moving cars - and which lead us directly to the waterfront and, almost, morning tea. Now the plan had been to rendezvous at Cunningham pier for morning tea (lots of parking you see and a wide choice of venues) but at the last minute word was passed to us that the waterfront was going to be clogged with the annual Australia Day Regatta 58

PORSCHE PARADE

(sponsored this year by some other German auto maker with lots of rings) and it was suggested we avoid the waterfront. So an alternate venue was organised and we took our break, meeting up with our final three cars, at the Elephant & Castle Hotel (Thanks Michael Bailey & Roger Holding ). Even with the changed venue all cars made it and there ensued a pleasant and very social morning tea. After our break we headed back into town and with minimal fuss was able to link up to our original route even managing to zero our odometers more or less correctly to match our route notes. We quickly made our way to the coast below the Geelong Botanic Gardens and could easily see the hundreds of yachts just off shore preparing for their day of sailing. We then edged around onto the Portarlington Road and via Drysdale made our way to Portarlington where we once again took the slower but really pretty coastal road around the peninsula to St. Leonards. It’s worth noting here that the weather was also bringing out the tourists and sight- seers so we were forced to take our time and savour the surrounds - nice really. Once past St. Leonards we turned inland for a few clicks before turning south and following

the curve of Swan Bay visible over rolling green pasture (something I haven’t seen in summer for quite some years). We then made our way skirting past Point Lonsdale on the final stretch into Queenscliff. The weather had, as I previously said, brought out the day trippers and the traffic was worthy of Melbourne at peak hour! This was really brought home when we arrived at the Queenscliff Hotel to discover the normally vast and vacant parking was the exact opposite. Unfortunately some people had to park several blocks away and I even overheard someone commenting over lunch that they were parked half way back to Geelong... pretty sure that was an exaggeration but you get the drift! Lunch was terrific (well mine certainly was) and the surrounds were of old elegance. As is often the case on Porsche runs the conversations and camaraderie made it a two to three hour sojourn before people finally headed back home. Several members took the opportunity to take the ferry across to Sorrento to shorten their return journey and I believe a good time was had by all. Thanks to the great collaborative work of both registers, the day went without a hitch.

Run to Skyhigh

Sunday 6th of March

Mid 911 Register

Croydon Hotel on the morning of Sunday 6th March 2011 saw the arrival of 15 bright and shiny Porsches looking forward to a great day in the Dandenongs and Yarra Valley. Most days this summer had been cool, and the predicted temperature of 27 degrees was most welcome- excellent weather for touring. 15 cars assembled. We had 9 Mid 911s and 6 watercooled vehicles, with several Boxsters, a Cayman S, 996 Turbo, 996 C4, and 997 C4S. Our President Keith Ryding and PCV Secretary Jolanda Brezovec are true Mid 911 members, and although they brought their 996 C4 we know they are “between” Mid 911s and will shortly be travelling to England to collect their 1988 3.2 Carrera, which will again cement their connection to our register. Keith introduced us to a special guest, Deryck Graham, who is the Vice President of Porsche Club of W.A. We left Croydon at 9.30 am and headed out towards Warburton. We travelled through Wandin and Seville out into the Yarra Valley through rolling hills, and then back through Monbulk to the twisting mountain curves of David Hill road, and on to Emerald Lake. We counted the vehicles as they arrived. Some had taken a slightly longer route, but had not been delayed by more than a few minutes. The Emerald Lake café and tearooms served us fine scones, jam and cream with coffee and tea, and we enjoyed a short stroll past the lake to the car park for a group photo, and back to driving and on to lunch. After morning tea we headed out into the Yarra Valley, travelling through Nangana and Yellingbo. A great drive through farmland and vines, with very little traffic apart from the occasional Lamborghini, Ferrari and MG enjoying these driving roads within easy reach of Melbourne. 60

We were due to arrive at SkyHigh restaurant Mt Dandenong at 12.30 pm, and the last of our line of vehicles came through the gate at 12.28 pm. Thanks to Peter and Clair Cromie for organising the driving route so well. The timing was perfect, and Peter and Clair had arranged a special car park for us to display our vehicles. They had also arranged an “upgrade” to the upper level restaurant, and on such a fine and sunny day the view was at its best. The buffet lunch was well received , being a quality buffet of seafood and even a roast. The customary speeches were kept short as there were other patrons in the restaurant, and instead of a raffle or similar Peter distributed the wine prizes to those who became lost and arrived last at morning tea. I am sure this approach can only be used once, or else our drivers will be encouraged to lose their way!

Deryck Graham from Western Australia told us of the Porsche Club Western Australia’s “bucket list” tour which is about to take place. He invited us to fill the remaining places on a tour where the convertibles are collected in Paris, and driven for a fortnight over special roads, including time at the ‘Ring. I am sure some members will speak to Deryck further after hearing his description. After a fine lunch we were pleased to have a short but enjoyable drive back to the Melbourne suburbs. Thanks, Peter and Clair- we had a great day!
