Our clubs 40th Anniversary celebrations are certainly taking shape and I encourage you to read the below events and join in the planned celebrations. Letters and invitations have gone out to all PCQ members, along with a special past Presidents invitation, which has been mailed to all past PCQ Presidents along with our PCQ life members. We would like all past Presidents and partners to be our special guests at the Noosa RACV dinner function to be held on Saturday the 26.07.14. Please call me on 0413 121 213 if you have not received your past presidents invitation. We have committed to a minimum of 20 people for dinner at the Sheraton Mirage on the Gold Coast that Thursday evening. So if you reside in the Gold Coast area, join in for the planned dinner and drinks or better still, participate in the Anniversary drive up to the Sunshine Coast. We are still experiencing delays beyond our control obtaining the Noosa Hill Climb Supplementary Regulations for the Hill climb (26th July), so please be patient as we will load them up on the website the day of receipt. Porsche Centre Brisbane has agreed to provide a fleet of cars for the Noosa Hill Climb weekend, which we certainly appreciate. I would also like to thank Porsche Centre Brisbane for contributing $1,500 sponsorship to the 2014 Noosa Beach Classic Car Show, to be held on the 5th of October 2014, where Porsche is the featured marquee and host to our 2014 Porsche Club of Queensland annual concourse. The 2014 Annual General Meeting (AGM) It’s time again to prepare for the PCQ AGM and declare all positions on the PCQ committee vacant once again. Donna Beard, who has done an absolutely sterling job for several years now putting together the annual Xmas Parties, River Cruisers, drive-days, etc., has decided that it’s time for her to spend time more with the 3 ‘grandies’. Thank you Donna for sharing your time with the club and placing boundless energy into your club role. It has added up to many great social events and drives. If you are interested in being our PCQ SOCIAL DIRECTOR moving forward, please let either myself or Donna know. Sheldon Arkinstall is also stepping aside after four years looking after our highly prized PCQ magazine. Absolute first class work Sheldon, and your passion and skill will be missed. If a club a member fancies themselves as a worthy wordsmith or if you have a passing interest in finding out what is actually involved in
publishing our club magazine, Sheldon will be only too happy to answer all of your questions. Please see either myself or Sheldon if you would like to know more. Once again thank you Sheldon, as the club magazine has gone ahead leaps and bounds in both quality and content under your stewardship. You have been a pleasure to work with. Our 40th Year For a bit of fun, I have asked our committee members and club members to share any photos you may have from 1974. The year of our clubs birth. Be that a car they had in 1974 or a photo of themselves regardless of if embarrassing or not. I can’t ask without doing it myself, so brace yourself! Here is a photo from when I was around 14 years old. A photo taken beside the Tweed River with my father John Beard. What can I say? *headshaking* Please e-mail any photos you wish to share to porscheclubqld@gmail.com and we certainly look forward to seeing them. Dave Beard PCQ Club President
EDITORS NOTES
Most of you who know me, through the club at least, would be well familiar with my beautiful white Carrera 3.0, which I owned for the last 11 years. Well sadly, about two weeks ago I finally sold the old girl after having her on the market on and off for the last 18 months or so. After approximately 36 years, she has returned to her home town of Sydney, so it will be unlikely that I will see her again, at least in the flesh.
cheque, shaking hands, signing the transfer form and then watching your baby drive off into the sunset with a tear in your eye (excuse me while I grab a tissue). Instead, payment was done quickly and efficiently via internet banking and then the next day I put my pride and joy on a transporter and the deal was done! Painless, but also very unfulfilling and in some ways, quite unnerving.
The sale of my Carrera was quite a defining moment in many ways; never before have I been so emotionally torn by the sale of car. Making the decision to sell her was easy enough at the time, especially when it was associated with buying another exciting toy, my ’92 964 Carrera 2 (Thanks Bob G). However the reality of actually saying good-bye to her forever when the time came was quite a shock, especially when the experience was so completely alien to what I had been expecting or experienced in the past. You see, in this age of technology, most of this transaction was completed via the internet or my mobile phone. There was none of the usual tangible, physical closure that you get by exchanging a
At least I know that the car is going to a good home. The gentleman who bought her new exactly what a Carrera 3.0 is and what makes them so special. In fact, he had had a previous experience with a Viper (?) green one early in his childhood and this was one of the main drivers for him to purchase a Carrera 3.0. When I rang him the day after he collected the car, talking to him was like talking to a young boy who had just got his first bike. He was effusive in his description of his first drive. Its passion like that, which gives you the confidence that your car is going to a good home.
Notes), I will be standing down as Editor at this years’ AGM. So if you are interested in taking on the role of Magazine Editor, which by the way is a much easier and requires far less effort now with the assistance of our excellent Production Assistant, Rachel Place, so please contact me if you’re interested and I’ll explain the role to you. Obviously, I will also be on hand to assist the new Editor to ease into to their new position for as long as that takes. Following on from another of Dave’s topics, unfortunately I don’t have any photos that I can honestly say were from 1974, but I do have a photo of me on my 21st birthday, standing beside my amazing little Alfa Sud Ti, that I bought from Porsche Centre Albion back in 1986! As can be seen, I was suitably attired in the oh-so-stylish shiny grey pants, white shoes and puffy shirt that was mandatory back in the day, which of course was fully complimented by my ‘Euro-mullet’! Embarrassing enough? I think so…

As we move towards the middle of the year and «Days of Thunder» for 2014, it’s pleasing to see we have some new entrants to the world of Porsche Motorsport. Several new members have brought their cars out to recent events and are enjoying the experience, there has been a trend back to the older cars recently and some members who had previously been to track days are coming back. The emphasis remains on «having fun» safely. Numbers appear to be slowly building and with that will come a reduction in fees. Days of thunder this year will consist of five sprints over the two days, with three on the Saturday and two on the Sunday. There will be two run groups in each sprint, so we can keep

the faster cars separated to some degree. In view of the nature of the day, I cannot give exact times for the sprints, but assume they will be spread throughout the days. To my knowledge there are no night sprints. At this stage, the cost will be $290.00, paid to QR for the two days. However, if we get around 40 entries, I can look to reduce the entry fee by buying the run group slots. These are interesting days, with a diversity of race and club cars being present and I would encourage all members to come and have a look. We have a few garage spots left for those who want one. I have also had some discussions recently

with Guy Harding from Harding Performance in relation to the conversion factors we use in the motorsport rules for determining the power to weight ratios of the various classes within the competition. Due to advances in technology we may need to look at how we do this and bring this into line with current best practice and the data provided by the newer types of Dyno›s. We are awaiting the details for the Noosa Hill Climb which will form part of the clubs 40th celebrations and these will be published as soon as we receive them. Ian Gall Motorsport Director

Thursday 24th July Two Day Drive
Brisbane/ Beaudesert to Noosa, YES two starting points! Greg Mc Whinney has mapped out a tour to tempt even the greatest garage queen out of hiding and into action. Starting Point 1 Brisbane Porsche Centre, Newstead: Like all good PCQ drives, we will meet at Porsche Centre Brisbane on Thursday Morning 9.00am for 9.30am departure, and head south to meet up with the Gold Coast contingent at Jubilee Park, Beaudesert around 10:30am. Starting Point 2 Brisbane Jubilee Park, Beaudesert: If you are on the Coast and don’t fancy an early morning crawl up to Brisbane, only to cruise back down again, why not sleep in and join the run at Jubilee Park, Beaudesert around 10:30am? The run: After a quick pit stop and coffee (pack the thermos) we will head back onto the bitumen for a cruise to the Box and Dice café at Kyogle for lunch (two plate alternate drop). Then it’s back on the road again along the Summerland Way, through Uki and finishing up at Sheraton Mirage, Southport. Make sure you self-book accommodation here (mention that you are part of the QLD Porsche Clubs Anniversary Run). Rest up and shine your shoes for Thursday night’s Dinner at the Sheraton Mirage, a low key smart casual dress affaire. If you are on the coast and can’t make the run, why not join us for dinner?

Cayman and Goliath: Porsche impressive in Targa Tasmania debut

PORSCHE
NEWS
‘Agile. Fast. Brilliant’: Jim Richards has praised the Porsche Cayman S as a tarmac rally car following its impressive Targa Tasmania debut, despite a premature end to its 2014 campaign. Richards, an eight-time Targa Tasmania winner and his co-driver Barry Oliver were exceeding all expectations when taking their near-standard Cayman S well within the rally’s outright top 10, while holding a commanding lead in the Showroom Sport class. Ultimately Richards’ campaign ended on the penultimate stage of Leg 4; his Cayman S sustained radiator damage when hitting a fence post on the wet Riana stage while passing a slower competitor. At the time of the incident, the Cayman was placed eighth outright. While the Cayman S didn’t reach the final day of competition, the result didn’t dampen Richards’ enthusiasm towards mid-engined sports car. “The Cayman S was absolutely brilliant and the best car I’ve ever driven at the Targa Tasmania event,” said Richards. “The car’s ability to handle the terrain was hugely impressive. It has a great chassis so, directionally, the car was fantastic and drove uninterrupted over every bump. “The Cayman was only around three

quarters of a second slower than the 911 GT2 RS I have driven in the rally previously. That is absolutely mind blowing for a car that has 300 hp less and weighs around the same as the GT2 RS. “We went in to Targa Tasmania to see if we could be competitive in the Showroom Sport class and be within the top 20. As it turned out, we were quickest in the class on every stage and were not far off the times of the outright competitors. “The result was disappointing; though we know we have a strong car leading into the coming rallies and can head to Tasmania next year confident that we have a brilliant car for the event.” The Showroom Sport class caters for production vehicles valued between $100,000 and $200,000 and manufactured after January 01, 2003. Richards will next campaign the Porsche Cayman S at Targa West on August 1417, 2014, followed by Targa High Country on November 07-09, 2014.

Stuart Brinsmead’s 911 has travelled the world with its various owners, starting in America, to Japan, then to New Zealand, then to Sydney, and now its living in Tasmania! He is converting it into a Group N (Historic Racing) car, but along the way has discovered interesting bits of history. In its previous life it looked like this
it was little worse for wear when Stuart purchased it! Let’s explore the process with Stuart from the comfort of our armchair, while he does all the heavy lifting for us. I expect there are a few readers who have done something similar, or are contemplating the job. You can also follow Stuart’s progress on the Pelican parts Forum.

The car had a cage in it but it was not compliant with Australian regulations, so it had to be removed and replaced with a new CAMS approved cage. It was done before the prep work began as there was a window of opportunity..

Then as the dissassemby began in earnest it was pointed out that the Weber Carbs have never been apart as they still have the original factory safety wire pattern on the float retainer screws, it had the original fuel hose as well, that snapped like a pencil during removal!
The shock towers have also had an interesting modification to allow the use of standard sized dampers with a low ride height, rather than having to use shortened ones, see next page where this modification was removed.
Check out that wood grain dash!
Parts aplenty - The front suspension, and the wiring loom, doesn’t look all that bad, lots of yellow overspray on it though.

As a C02 blaster couldn’t be found Stuart elected to use the grinding wheel to get back to bear metal, before applying some 2 pack primer then some Satin Black 2k on the interior.
In line with the Group N rules, the lightweight doors had to be replaced with steel ones, so out came the grinder again to remove the 10mm of filler over the whole door skin from the replacement doors.
The shock tower was returned to nearly original.
After all the grinding and whilst the body is away having some fabrication done, it was a good chance to get all the other resin panels in primer... plus it was perfect conditions for painting!
The forum suggested to Stuart that while he was in there, he should connect the torsion tube to the chassis with a few gussets, drill some holes in the bottom of the torsion tube to let the water out (as per later cars), pour in copious amounts of Wuerth cavity wax to rustproof it and notch the floor-pan so he can get the motor out more easily (as per the factory RSR). Chassis 304060’s journey will continue in the August September edition of the magazine.

My Project - Part 1
Story and Photos by Ian Preston
As I promised in my profile article (DecemberJanuary edition of PCQ News), my follow-up story was to be the ‘Project’ and what the experience has been like so far. After first purchasing my 1977 Porsche 911 from Don Munro, many discussions have taken place as to how to proceed; my enthusiasm went ballistic and as I just wanted to get the car done! Thankfully, Don was there to control my enthusiasm and we had many discussions on what I wanted from the car. I had a constant vision and dreams of it performing to the same degree as Don’s car, but of course, we all have to crawl before we can walk, so a plan was set in place. So work on the car commenced and I stripped the shell of the car only to discover there was a little rust to contend with, or so I thought. I ended up removing the rear right-hand-side (RHS) seat only to discover that the floor panel rotten. This required repair, so I had a new floor piece manufactured by Ray Taylor of Taylor’s Automotive Services Pty ltd, whose speciality is the manufacture of replacement panels for numerous makes and models. To date his speciality has been early Holden replacement pieces. On discovery of further rust in the bottom of the left-hand-side (LHS) door skin and RHS guard sill panel, I thought “where can I get these fixed?” A conversation with an apprentice at work led me to being introduced to Ray Taylor, a real character who said “I ain’t never worked on one of those German Porsche thingies, but I guess I’ll give it a go” and so it happened. A week or so later, a voice on the other end of the phone said “It’s ready”. On discovering that it was Ray, I went out to Bundamba see his handy work and to my surprise, he had hand manufactured the floor pan and replicated the piece I had given him. It was perfect! I was extremely happy with the result, so I also gave him the door and guard from my car for him to work his magic. After a couple of weeks of anticipation as to the result of his handy work, I gave him a call, “Do you want the good news or the bad news?“ Ray asked. I had to curtail my disappointment, when he said in a very dry manner, “When I removed the door skin, the lower door frame was beyond repair, all rusted out. The good news is I made you a new one”. Ray’s ability as a sheet metal worker and panel repairer is amazing. With the car finally stripped and the body shell taken to my sons place for storage; the remainder of the removable pieces were scattered around my garage at home, much to my wife’s dismay. After assessing the requirements of all the parts removed, and a job list produced, the stripping of paint began. I soon learnt that Crocks are not the appropriate footwear when using paint stripper - a small drop of stripper teaches one how to do the hot shoe shuffle. It seemed as though there was no going forward for a while, just one big mess. It appears that my old 911 has seen a paint shop on at least four previous occasions, so there was a lot of old paint to remove. The scrapings seemed to never end, then one day, my shed seemed to be devoid of painted things; just a lot of bare steel. Whoopee!

Then it was off to the refinish people at work for some advice on what to do next. After parting with a considerable amount of dollars, I had sand paper of various grades, tins of filler, etch primer, high build filler primer and yes, even some paint. So, what was I to do next, as this stuff was expensive, I had to get it right the first time. I dogged people with a barrage of ‘how to do’ questions. Research on how to do it resulted in practice, after mastering the application technique, I became the most unpopular member of the household (I forgot to tell everybody to close the windows when I was applying some paint); on one occasion my wife Paula came out into the garage like a cyclone! I learnt the error of my ways and now close the windows. I soon mastered the art of using the various types of spray guns, mixing correct ratios of
paint, hardener and thinners, completed items started to look good. I have successfully rebuilt the front spoiler and after many fibreglass repairs, the paint was applied. I could not be happier with the glassy finish. Then the bumpers, rear quarter panels and sills received their final coats of “Induchi Rot” (Indian Red ). As many of you are aware, our sheds are full of bits of this and that and spray cans of various substances and as a result, I learnt a big lesson. Silicon as you may know is a painter’s enemy. I was all prepared to paint the two bumpers when disaster struck. Unbeknown to me, an old can of silicon spray in my workshop was a little rusty and had leaked out its contents and managed to get all over my front bumper. The horror was apparent when applying the paint, as it all went ‘pear-shaped’ as the silicon started to react with the fresh paint. Back to

stripping paint again, two steps forward and one step back seems to be the go. During my ritual Saturday morning visits to DHM Auto Solutions for coffee and a chat, conversations have continued as to my progress and what is needed next. This has resulted in my obtaining parts needed for the conversion for upgraded brakes. The shopping and things to do lists are growing, including the removal of items to lighten, as I proceed with Don’s voice in the background giving best advice and importantly the reasons why. He is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things Porsche. I look on in awe of the blue RS rebuild taking place in Don’s workshop, his attention to detail and his willingness to

answer my constant questions; how, why, what for? His guidance keeps me motivated in my progression with my project. It has been an interesting adventure so far, with some funny things happening along the way. One day I was asked if I was busy, Don wanted help with the trailer to recover another project from storage at Park Ridge. With the new project car loaded, tied down, bonnet and engine cover taped and doors secured, we were ready to go. After travelling along Beaudesert Road for a while and coming to a stop at traffic lights, a lady in the car beside us said “A bit of glass fell out of your car back there!” A quick glance at each other and a quick exit from the tow car revealed the
windscreen of the 911 to be missing. It was found shattered on the roadside OOPS! It had not been refitted after the conversion, just sat in place. Luckily nobody was hit or injured and we all had a good laugh about it. Soon work on the shell will commence, as most of the bolt on items are done. So I will keep you informed as to the next stage. For those of you contemplating a project never fear, as help is always near. I have found advice from PCQ members freely offered and amazing, thank you all. Cheers till the next instalment.

Luckily the new expressway for the new airport had just been built and I had a 100km round trip each day between North Lantau and Central to exercise the car on fresh tarmac, very light traffic and no speed cameras. Social Drive Day
Article by Donna Beard Photos by Mark Gerarda
Although the weather was a tad overcast – nothing to fear – we all met at our usual spot at PCB for another great drive. We set off through Kelvin Grove, Enoggera, then up through Samford, Dayboro and onto our final destination of Birches Restaurant at Mount Mee. Thirty-two ‘happy travellers’ in their Porsches out for a lovely Sunday drive, just to loosen the legs and enjoy the joy of Porsche motoring and great company. Birches Restaurant is one of those places that we have passed a few times on our drives over the years and I always have said “That looks a nice spot, we must go there one day“, then recently, it was suggested by another member and I thought “Now’s our chance!” We were not disappointed – what a great little place. The food is fantastic and the service was very

One funny thing happened on the day, I had this guy come up to me in the restaurant asking who was in charge of this group – I thought he was cross with one of us (maybe someone overtook him on the drive?)
Apparently, the last car he bought was also from Brisbane; he says it was from a former Club President, but he couldn’t remember his name. Apparently we do it better in QLD (LOL).
Anyway, it turns out that he is a member of the Porsche Club of WA and was over in ‘Brissy’ to pick up another Porsche on the Friday and had decided to take it for a drive around South East Qld and just happened to be passing the restaurant when he saw all the Porsches parked out front. He thought “This has got to be a Porsche Club Drive Day“, so he came in and introduced himself to us and joined us for lunch. What
