PRESIDENTS PROSE

Porsche 70 years young and going stronger. Their birthday present, the 911 Speedster Concept. Take a look on the Porsche Australia website. What can I say except what an amazing celebration for Porsches 70th Anniversary we had!. A fantastic day filled with amazing cars and wonderful people. I believe we fulfilled the theme “Sports Cars Together” admirably. I would like to thank the committee involved in the day, Bill black and Wagner Higgins for sitting at Reddacliff place with me one night and skulking around the market stalls to see where we were going to put cars, for sorting out where each car should be placed and for helping to usher in the cars on the day. To KIP McIntyre for organising the 356 collection, the buck, and for working overtime on the RS that was in the ballroom on the night, thank you so much. To Kevin Vedelago for laminating all the paperwork I sent through, having it all ready and being so organised in the morning at Porsche Centre Brisbane, to Peter Stapley also for helping with that organisation in the morning along with all the other numerous hands directing and helping too which made it go so smoothly and professionally and to Porsche Centre Brisbane for looking after us so well in the morning with food and coffees and providing a wonderful place to start our day. To Greg McWhiney for looking after the convoy which sort of didn’t end up as a convoy but groups going down to the Gold Coast but I believe was masses of fun any rate, and for helping to usher cars into Reddacliff pl. Grant Field, thank you for looking after the film crew on the day and running them down in your car so they could get some wonderful footage. A massive thanks to Julie Frost who helped me on the day with sorting ticket sales and giving out our Porsche gifts to the general public, set up the ballroom and really helped me out of a massive hole for time. She did an amazing job with the help of Cameron Cooper, Grace Sorenson and Emily Cooper down at Mantra. The cars in the upper foyer and in the ballroom, Thanks to Allan Frost, Kip McIntyre and Jonathon Webb from Teckno Performance for loaning the gorgeous 911 in the foyer. To Bruce Allom for running the Auction at the Gala Ball with so much gusto, he did an amazing job, thank you Bruce. FINALLY, I can’t forget all the people who attended with their cars that made this day so wonderful, as without you no matter how much work we did it would never have been the day it was, thank you for all your time and efforts. I hope I have not forgotten anyone, oh yes... my Husband, Steve, for doing what he was asked (told) on the day which is really quite unusual for him!! He helped me heaps, lifting, moving, bringing and taking trailers and cars!!. You will all, by now, realise the AGM is upon us and all committee 6

members are stepping down from their roles, whilst some are indicating they will be renominating others will not be doing so. Sadly I will not be renominating for the presidency however we do have an internal nomination for this position. Bill Black, VP will also not be renominating for his position and I believe there is an internal nomination for this position also, Peter Stapley would like to hand the role of editor over to someone and Jeff Clancey will also not be renominating as webmaster. So we have positions requiring nomination for; Webmaster definitely and Editor. Though there have been nominations for the other positions if you wanted one of the roles you are entitled to do so. You will have received the AGM reminder as well as nomination forms and proxy forms by email, if you did not receive and you would like them resent please let me know. Apart from the 70th celebrations we have gotten back into full swing with our motorsport and sprints, some social drives with a lot more planned for the rest of the year. Keep your eyes on the social calendar for further info. Rennsport USA, final calls. I have left the rooms I had booked until now in case I had a few late entries so if you are interested I can send you the itinerary of the trip and approx dollars and then let me, Lee Cooper, know if you want to get involved. I will cancel all unwanted accommodation and cars I have on hold by the 20th July 2018. Recently we have had a large number of new members, I would like to welcome them and their families to the club and I do hope that you will find an activity, social or speed, that you will enjoy. I have been a member for 20 years and have made some lifelong friends and I hope you will too. This will be my last President Prose so thank you all, members and family, Porsche family and affiliates, for making my time as President so positive and rewarding. I have not achieved a few things I wanted to but I just have not been able to find the time and whilst I would like another year to do these I just am not in a position to do so this coming year, maybe the one after. Thank you all again, see you at an event real soon, Bis bald, und Gute Fahrt!

Editors Notes

MOTORSPORT NEWS As we settle in to the year, we still have most of our events in the second half of the year. Round 7 is going to be particularly big with this round also being the CAMS State Super Sprint Championship as well as a Round of ICC. Even if you are not competing, it will be worth a drive up to Warwick for a look The remainder of our calendar look like this:

It all started back in 1948 the Porsche 356 started life as a full production sports car. Production began in Gmünd, Austria by a company known as Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH before moving to Zuffenhausen, Germany under Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH. It was Porsche's first production automobile.

in Australia with 2 being imported by Melbourne entrepreneur, previous issues. Norman Hamilton, making Australia the very first right hand drive market for them and one of Porsche's first export territories. They were rare items indeed with our import quotas restricting importation to only 2 units per year up until 1954. Since then Australia's passion for all things Porsche has grown with record sales being recorded. Last year Porsche sold 246,000 vehicles which was up by 4% on the previous year. 28,000 of these sales were for the new Panamera.

With the introduction of the Macan, Cayenne and Panamera Porsche has made their marque available to a new family generation of owners, but as many can attest to, retained the sports car feel within them all. Already the diesel has been phased out of all but one model with hybrids taking over in Europe. Now they are heading into all electric vehicles with the announcement of the Mission E car for production next year under the name of Taycan. As we head to the end of yet another financial year our AGM is coming up. All committee positions are declared vacant and in this magazine are nomination forms for committee positions. If you feel you want to be part of the club and all the rewards that go with it, don’t hesitate to nominate for any position. New faces bring new ideas. The role of Editor brings its own challenges but if you would like to assist or even be editor drop me a line or send in the nomination form. These will also be available on the web site but must be received by the Secretary prior to the 16th July.

If you were not there for our June club night then you seriously missed out. We were all invited to the recently c o m p l e t e d Scott Taylor Motorsports Head Quarters which was designed by Scott and his wife Rebecca to fulfil some of their dreams within motorsport. Not one person there could come away without feeling impressed with what was before them. Apart from walls adorned with a dream selection of cars on specially built racks the facility is absolutely one of its kind. The functionality of the premises is tailored to accommodate the combination of Motorsports and personal lifestyle interests. The state of the art facility provides a base of all aspects associated with a competitive race team. It is a leading edge workshop, garaging for the numerous race vehicles and purpose built transport trucks and trailers, function facilities, modern offices and a fully equipped gymnasium. Facilities include:Fully Integrated Cinema Setup Two custom built race simulators Gymnasium, complete with 22 m swimming pool, Weights and Cardio Area, Sauna and Yoga Room.

Boardroom Fully integrated presentation system, Sky Bar, full wet bar, TV and audio. Offices, various kitchens and crew rooms. Workshop fitted with state of the art equipment, 3 hoists, wall mounted car racks, Sub assembly room, Machine shop, Parts storage. We were warmly welcomed by Scott, Rebecca and their staff and after a brief outline of the dream behind the premises, a supply of gourmet pizza, we were given free reign of the equipment and rooms with staff happy to answer all the probably repetitive questions. One "little" side project is their in house 3D printer where they are manufacturing their own specially designed parts for their race cars. I was told that it operates 24/7 and has not stopped since its purchase. This will be a much talked about night by all and our thanks to Scott, Rebecca and their staff for their hospitality.

Cars & Coffee Gold Coast

May 19 WOW! Just wow, what a fantastic May Meet it was. We had cars, bikes and people everywhere. Those who did come know exactly what I’m saying and we had another awesome array of everything, from a Machine Gun totting military scout to an Army Green Hot Rod with a big block, from 2 1939 Ford V8’s to 8

Porsches from early 901’s to late 997’s. Amongst such an eclectic bunch and some really stunning vehicles, the Car of the Meet went to a burnt Orange XB Ford Coupe. It was certainly a stand out in a sea of so many wonderful automobiles. The 19th was of course the morning of the wedding of the decade between Prince Harry and Meghan, so not to be out done, we had our own Regal ensemble with 6 RR and Bentley’s present namely a 1913 Ghost, 51 MKVI Special, 63 Cloud III, 2 Corniches and a Spirit. Not to be outdone of course was the German heritage of the Windsors with 8 Porsches. The British theme continued with a good selection of BMC classics, from Vauxhalls, Comer, Morris, Triumph, Austin, MG, Rover, Jaguar, Sunbeam, Daimler and a wonderful Corsair. I was told, that this was a very rare and highly desirable automobile and certainly had many a tongues wagging. Another treat was the 2 identical Ferrari 360 Modena both in Rosso Red parked facing each other. One was a Coupe and the other a Convertible, both had their engines on display and they were spectacular. The Italian connection was further enhanced with a beautiful Alfa Romeo. One of my favourite marques is Citroen and we had 2 ultra-rare examples parked right next to each other, namely a 2 CV and a Traction Avant. Boy were they nice, the 2 CV with its corrugated bonnet looking oh so cool. Speaking of cool, 3 itinerations of Mercedes SLs were present too. Firstly was the 280SL nicknamed the Pagoda due to the shape of its Hard Top, then

the R107 500sl and lastly the SL55. Also present were several other AMG specials. Shifting gaze to the east and we found 2 Rotary champions from Mazda, one an early 4 Door sedan and the other a RX8. Those who are unaware, the RX8 even though looks like a coupé is essentially a 4 door sedan with 4 proper seats with rear suicide doors aka RR Phantom 7. The other Mazda was the MX5 with a LS1 shoe horned in now labelled “Bullet”. We also had the delightful little Suzuki Cappuccino aptly plated “KOFEE”. Overall it was an enjoyable day had by all with wide smiles all around and as always the honourable mentions go out to the VK Calais, Volvo 1800 Estate, Daimler 250, Jaguar XKD Type, Valiant, Ford Cobra 5.8, Mustang Fastback, BMW M, 55 Plymouth, VW Kombi, Monaro GTS, Ford Falcon 500 and Ford Falcon Coupé. June 16 Brrr! This was the general consensus of almost everyone present. It was an exceptionally chilly morning with the mercury plummeting to unprecedented levels, but you can’t keep an enthusiast at bay and boy did we have a solid crowd. I arrived at 7.45am and there were already 30 cars present, we eventually had close to 100 vehicles turn up and it was a wonderful morning with most of us thawing out in the morning sun. The car of the meet went to a beautifully restored 1958 Chrysler Station Wagon in mint green with a matching olive green interior. It was extensively restored and in my opinion looked better than new. Porsche Centre Gold Coast were also present and they brought down a stunning 718 Cayman in resplendent white. The organisers of The Gold Coast Car Show had also so graciously provided Show Car passes for their show on 11th August. We trialled a new parking arrangement with 4 rows of horizontally parked vehicles with cars starting from the bottom grass patch all the way up to the museum because it was brought to my attention that there were cars having to turn back due to lack of space which is a real shame as we all make a conscious effort to come down for the meet and have a wonderful morning amongst likeminded folks. This new arrangement worked very well and it seems that we could easily park a further 50 cars – so, we hope to see you next month!

A very good smattering of all makes and models were present with some very well cared for examples and some which were in their care for the past 3 or 4 decades. That’s what I call love and commitment. This is in reference to the black Porsche 911T and the yellow Austin Healey Sprite which has never seen rain in the past 42 years of ownership. Some of the American autos were really beautiful, for instance the Chevrolet Belair in Black & White combo with plenty of Chrome, the Matt Black Plymouth with hand painted pin stripping, air bagged Studebaker Hawk, the Stunning Silver Corvette, Lincoln Continental and countless others. The American autos have a unique charm about them. Not to be outdone were the British beauties starting off with the RR Corniche FHC, Vauxhall Velox Cab & Ute, Thames Panel Van, MGAs, Triumph Stag, Commer, 1927 Austin Sports, Jaguar XJS Coupé & Convertible and Bentley Flying Spur. A very strong Aussie contingent being represented by a wonderful Holden EK Special, Ford Fairlane 289, Ford GT 351, Valiants, Holden Calais, 64 Ford Falcon Coupé in Red & Silver, Ford XY GT, Monaro GTS and Torana 350. Simon Templar showed up or rather his 1800 Volvo was there together with an estate version. The 3 Hot Rods parked together was a sight to behold, all rods but all totally different. The piece de resistance was surely the hand built Aluminium Bodied JAG V12 with enough polished wood to put an Italian speedboat to shame. The best part was it ran on LPG. Go figure! Another fantastic car was the Porsche 550 Spyder replica. This is the same model in which James Dean was last driving. It really looked the business too. As always, honourable mentions were the Panther Kalista, Porsche 997 Turbo S, 2 Porsche 928’s, BMW M3’s, 2 Mercedes R107’s, VW Beetle Rat Rod, Lotus Elise, Austin A40, Ford Focus RS and 2 Nissan Cubes. See you all next month on 21st July 2018. To view all the cars, please visit https://www.facebook.com/ carsandcoffeegoldcoast

The Mt Coot-tha Classic (by someone who was there) Story: Wagner Higgins Photos: Dion Tarzia Since I got a ’76 Carrera 3.0, waking up on Saturday mornings feels like it used to when I was a kid. I can’t wait to rush downstairs, turn on the garage lights and see my car again. She waits for me too, sometimes all week… in silence… except for her steady, ticking, analogue clock, counting the hours to these reunions. You see, we’ve become a gang of two, me and Minty, my pretty mint green Carrera and me. We rise early every Saturday and we roll down the driveway, quietly as we can, since it’s usually barely light. We go to find the open road, where we’ll be all alone and when the road and the entire world belongs to us. That time of morning always has a certain solitary, magic quality, that only early risers (and only them that own exciting cars) know about. This Saturday morning is better than most. This morning is the 19th of May 2018 which happens to be the morning of the Mt Coot-tha Classic. Which is a PCQ social event for those who enjoy friendly competition, cars, picnics and bendy roads. I only drive in the ‘windows down’ position. It doesn’t matter how hot or cold it is – windows down is the way I go. I also only drive bare foot. Driving in shoes feels like driving in boxing gloves, or showering clothed. Only since owning a mid-70’s Carrera have I appreciated the physical sensation of driving. I like the wind on my face and the bare steel pedals under my toes… and her delicious smell and sound. And so, it was bare foot, windswept and slightly petrol scented that I arrived at the top of Mt Coot-tha, in the Grey Gum picnic ground that morning. I find Mr Kip McIntyre, event organiser, perched at the top of the hill, in characteristic high spirits. He has arrived early to commandeer the public carpark area, defending his meeting spot against shameless Tarago drivers. Before long, they arrived. Like moths to a flame, Porsches to a mountain. They were promised mountain-themed, Porschebased frivolity – and they would not be disappointed. As they rolled into the carpark, Kip greeted each participant and explained the rules of the ‘game’. It was simple – each participant predicted the time it would take them to drive a loop of Mt Coot-tha. The guesses of each participant would be recorded, and then, after each participant had driven some loops, whoever achieved the time closest to their predicted time would be the winner. 12

PORSCHE NEWS

Participants were instructed to write their predicted times on a special piece of cardboard (refer Photo 1). And Kip had downloaded a special (free) app called ‘Ultimate StopWatch’ for the event. With the power of Ultimate StopWatch, Kip would be able to time the cars as they drove around the mountain. What did we ever do before iphones? What’s also impressive is that the combination of Cardboard Recording System and the Ultimate StopWatch cost the event organiser Zero Dollars, bringing the event budget to Zero Dollars. Now some readers may be sceptical about how much fun a non-race driving event with a Zero Dollars budget could be. If you are, then you’ve forgotten the joy of a well curated driving playlist, on a crisp autumnal morning, dappled sunlight breaking through a canopy of leaves and the sound of your 911 crackling as you dethrottle rapidly towards a mountain bend. Driving Minty, at moments like these, when it’s just the two us, traveling through space and time together, being free…. is what I will remember when I’m old. It’s that same feeling (or the quest for it), and not fanfare or fancy coffee, that brought together a delightfully motley crew of folk atop the mountain that morning. At lunch time, the people brought out their lunches… some brought proper picnics, others built ‘makeshift sandwiches’ using knees as table tops. Club members and non-members shared their food, stories and jokes. Some checked the scoreboard and scratched their heads as they mentally strategized how to achieve more accurate times on their next loop around the mountain. Others joked about how inaccurate their predicted times were. There were some half-hearted accusations of cheating, but if there was cheating, no one really cared. By lunch time there was a colourful variety of Porsches and their people, and some motorbikes had joined us too. There

was Tyler’s cool turquoise outlaw, Dion’s silver 356, Scott’s beautiful white Cayman, a ‘79 SC, an ‘88 Carrera Cabriolet, Paul’s 996, Jason’s 944.. to name a few. By early afternoon, it was evident that one young and beautiful couple, resplendent in their black, ‘81 Targa, were not going to be beaten – for classiness or driving skill! Adam and Tess drove steadily and deliberately and achieved loop times that were mere seconds off their pre-estimate time. Our little tribe crowned them King & Queen of the Mountain and they were presented with the Mt Coottha Classic Trophy, which, like everything else that day, was free-sourced from a scrap of aluminium and lovingly shaped and hand hammered by Kip McIntyre.

traveling companion. We miss the turnoff which would have taken us home, we pass the Paddington skate park, catching glimpses of those clever kids, themselves a tribe, seeking out the same thrills. Their heads turn, some of them smile. The sun is low on the horizon. Minty pulls through second gear, leaving the other cars far behind, looking small but mighty, sounding every bit like the gangster she is, pulling us away from home and towards anyplace.

The mountain became silent as the last Porsche rolled out of the carpark. The group dispersed as the birds watched on… waiting and listening, eyeing our abandoned picnic site. Driving home, we did what we normally do and took the long way. Like any girl gang, Minty and me are happier when we’re together and we don’t need to be going anywhere particular. Minty isn’t just for taking me places, she’s also my PORSCHE NEWS

70TH WEEKEND DISPLAY.

GALA DINNER

On behalf of the club members I’d like to thank the committee, and especially our club President Lee Cooper, who put an enormous amount of work into contacting various Porsche owners to try and get one example of every model for the weekend, as well as organising display cards for each vehicle, guest speakers and items for the charity auction that was held at the Mantra-on-View. To our Motorsport director Kevin Vedelago and club magazine editor Peter Stapley for organising and ensuring vehicles left in order and on time. With most of the display vehicles arriving at Porsche Centre Brisbane just after 6.00 am and being lined up in lines of three at set time frames to allow for ease of arranging vehicles to be sent onto Reddacliff place for display. On behalf of our club I’d like to thank Porsche Centre Brisbane for putting on a breakfast which allowed club members to catch up over coffee and continental breakfast before heading off to Reddacliff Place to display our Porsches to the public. Bill Black and Kip McIntyre for organising parking of Porsches once arriving at Reddacliff Place and to Kip who arranged to have McKinnon Restorations provide the replica 550 Spider and timber buck from which it was produced. I’ll let the photos tell the story of what a great success it was and how members of the public really enjoyed the display and were keen to know about the cars.

Well what a Gala Dinner it turned out to be. The dinner was held at the Mantra-on-View, the staff and management at the Mantra-on-View were terrific. Upon arriving and checking in PCQ club members were advised, instead of having to park their pride and joy in the public car park as was arranged, the management arranged for all PCQ Porsches and family cars to be parked in the Mantra staff carpark which had its own separate secure area. With a team effort two (2) vehicles were arranged to be displayed inside the ballroom, a replica 2.8 L RS from McKinnon Restorations, from Alan Frost a GT-3 RS, and Techno Motorsports provided a 991 Targa in 70th celebration livery for the pre-dinner drinks area. Our Motorsport director Kevin Vedelago, was our MC for the dinner and ensured that the night’s proceedings flowed. Club President Lee Cooper welcomed everyone, along with our guest speakers Michael Browning renowned Porsche journalist and avid Porsche owner and enthusiast. Along with Andy McElrea – owner of McElrea Motorsports with his young and current Australian Porsche Cup Championship leading driver Jaxon Evans. The meals and drinks were great, Michael Browning engaged and enlighten us with his knowledge of Porsche cars that he’s reviewed, which have involved some amazing experiences on open public roads, and the number of Porsches he has owned, raced and shares this enthusiasm today after over 40 years of ownership. Andy McElrea and Jaxson Evans were engaging and informative

The Charity Auction conduction by Club Member Bruce Allom with assistance and ‘guest appearance’ from the Blues Brothers (AKA Steve and Cameron Cooper) helped raise over $4,000 dollars on the night for Men’s Health Charities. During the night we were entertained with a great some great footage of Porsches racing from various parts around Europe in hill-climbs, tarmac rallying and track racing which was put together by our club President. 70TH WEEKEND BYRON BAY CARS & COFFEE

. Well what a weekend the 9th and 10th of June turned out to be. To finish out the 70th Anniversary weekend PCQ was extended an invitation from the organisers of Byron Bay Cars and Coffee. So after breakfast Sunday morning 8 of us headed down the M-1 to Byron Bay for a coffee. We did make for quite a sight with an RWB – 930 Turbo – GT-3 – 996 Turbo – 87 3.2 L Carrera, and three SC’s. The trip was good and we arrived and parked to be greeted by a group of Brisbane based Porsche owners who had made their

own way to Byron Bay Cars and Coffee, with a nice collection on show, 944’s, a 914, 911’s covering from 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s and one Boxster. I’ll let the photos tell the story of what a great success it was and how members of the public really enjoyed the display and were keen to know more about the cars. Chris Kyle A colourful title for a colourful bunch.

Jason Collins

By Lee Cooper

Recently I ventured to the north of our great state and visited the dealership in Townsville, established to meet the needs of the natural growing market in Townsville and North Queensland. Porsche Centre Townsville became the 14th official Porsche Centre in Australia when it began operating in July 2015. It only took three years to get there; we don’t need to rush things!! Being a Saturday morning we didn’t know what to expect but the staff was showing a couple of perspective buyers through, though they said that it was a bit of a quiet morning. We were privileged to meet not only the head of the sales department Chris Kyle but also the dealer principle Jason Collins who had dropped by before his beloved track day, horses of a different kind! Both exceptionally excited about the brand and its future up there. As you would expect both gentlemen had extensive knowledge on the models and the brand so if you are up that way it would definitely pay to buy through them. Both men were exceptionally welcoming and gave us plenty of their time, chatted about how the centre is going with generally a higher percentage of Cayenne and Macan being sold but they do have the odd one or two with the need for speed. We actually met a few of those at a quiet event that evening and discussed the future for social events etc up the top end. Whilst the roads around Townsville leave a little to be desired I am told the ones around Cairns are the places to go and they are all only too happy to drive there either for a full day or for an overnight run. Sounded perfect to me!! All in all it was a very productive visit and hopefully soon we will be able to get on track with social events being organised for the members of North Qld.

Meanwhile Townsville and Cairns members get on facebook and join the PCQ members page as the second Tuesday of each month we live stream our meetings so you can feel a little more a part of the club at least..

-by Bill Black About 44 years ago a small group of friends, all car enthusiasts went to Maclean’s Bridge for a Mother’s Day picnic on the banks of the Logan River. The gathering grew as other car enthusiasts out for a Sunday drive stopped to join the ever increasing number of cars parked in the picnic area. It quickly became an annual event and after 3 or 4 years due to need for a bit of formal organization, the Triumph Sports Owners Association (TSOA), a car club for the Triumph marque became involved and organized what became a must attend car club display. In 2009 the local council asked TSOA to find an alternative venue as the hundreds of cars now turning up for the display and the hundreds of spectators, made the Maclean’s bridge picnic area just too small. For the next 4 years TSOA held the event at Lakeside but still honoured the heritage by calling the event Mac’s Bridge. Ever increasing hire costs at Lakeside saw a further relocation to the Logan University Campus at

Meadowbrook for 2 years. This became unviable due to the ever increasing red tape due to SWMS, risk assessments and the need to have person walk in front and also one behind each and every car when it was driven in and parked. This necessitated another move, this time to the Belmont Rifle Range, where the event has been held for the last 3 years. The change from the second Sunday in May to a few weeks later only happened in recent years to avoid the clash with Mother’s Day.

Some owners put their cars up for judging including our Club Secretary Wagner with her immaculate Carrera 3.0 representing PCQ in the ICC judging arena. The prize for the best “Early Sports Car” went to an E-Type Jaguar, “Modern Sport Car” MX5, while the “Best European” went to a quirky Citroen DS 21 Pallas. “Best Car Club” was awarded to the Capri Convertible Club.

Over 500 cars were on display with everything from Alvis to Zephyr. As usual a very healthy roll up of Porsches estimated to be about 50 cars in total throughout the morning. Oddities included the 3 wheeler Messerschmitt and Morgan albeit the modern incarnation and not the original version powered by the classic JAP V-twin. An unusually large number of Studebakers and Daimler SP250 Darts attracted a lot of admirers as did the lone De Lorean DMC12 and Riley Special. There were both original and replicas on display which included some of the best looking cars to ever grace a race track including D-Type and Lightweight E-Type Jags, Ferrari F40 and a Mercedes W125 grand prix car from the ‘30s with a more modern engine short by two cylinders.

ICC Round 3 Lakesidethe best Regularity 10 June strategy was to position yourself between a car that has

Round 3 of the Inter Club Challenge (ICC) was the Lakeside Regularity organised by the BMW Club. As well as being a fun day out, the event raises money for the Club’s charities through various means such as entry fees, donations, raffles, and fines for misdemeanours. It was unfortunate that the Porsche Club had its 70th anniversary celebrations that weekend in the Gold Coast, which limited the number of entries. For those that are not familiar with a Regularity event, it is about tactical driving. The objective is to let you compete with limited speed restriction to suit your David Palmer passenger ride own driving ability and skill level, making it competition motor sport rather than racing. The idea is not to try and break the lap record, but to drive at your own constant pace to your nominated lap time, gained from your initial practice. It’s all about staying as close as possible to that time, because for every tenth of a second you are away from that time you receive a point or more. As for the ICC results, these are calculated on the best four drivers with the lowest points from each club. There were 15 teams entered for the event with four cars per team. The clubs represented were the BMW, PCQ, MR2, MX5, 86 Drivers Club, Triumph Sports and Lotus. Team Porsche consisted of Glen Wallace, Bob Hamilton, John Keep and John Datson. In addition, there were two other Porsches representing PCQ; namely David Palmer in the Also Rans team, and Geoff Marsh in The Lotrumps team. This last team had an interesting mix of cars which included, in addition to Geoff’s 981 Cayman S, an Aston Martin DB9, Lotus Exige Sports, and an MX5. Howard Moss driving a 1980 Porsche SC Targa was representing the Triumph team. The format for the day allocated the cars to four run groups with one member of each team in each run group. The event started with each group having a 10-minute practice session to allow drivers to evaluate and nominate their lap time with a minimum time set at 66 seconds. One point was gained for every 0.10 seconds over the nominated time, and two points were gained for every 0.10 seconds under the time. Based on this point scoring method it was better to be conservative rather than fast and furious. As the PCQ team gathered, we all agreed that we would be in better shape than our fellow members on the Gold Coast. At least we were out of bed, standing and alive. A number of us were Regularity virgins and needed to gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and strategies to be adopted for the day. These ranged from consuming a high fibre breakfast to better regulate the body clock, Glen looked at using only 7th gear in the GT3, find another car in your run group with a similar time and follow them hoping they have a better body clock, or just go for it and see what happens. You will be pleased to note that 32

a faster and a car with a slower lap time. This allowed you get uninterrupted laps with minimal interference from slower cars. It is interesting to note that by 11.00am, the high fibre breakfast had certainly regulated bowel motions but did not assist lap times. Like golf the only thing that people remember is the score. So how did the we go? The following table gives you the Porsche results. The experienced David Palmer put together three very consistent runs within 0.60 seconds of his nominated time to have the lowest aggregate score. His first run of the day was interrupted by heavy traffic, slowing the field and blowing out his time. His first lap points were equivalent to the total of the last three runs. For the rest of us, our lap times were best represented as a sinusoidal curve with the main difference between the drivers being the height of the curve, both positive and negative, from the nominated time. PCQ Drivers Nominated Time (secs) Total Points Overall Position David Palmer 69 244 11th John Datson 74 319 15th John Keep 72 432 24th Glen Wallace 70 769 43rd Bob Hamilton 66 1,064 47th Geoff Marsh 66 4,807 51st

John Datson passenger ride

Bob Hamilton only managed to get two runs in the morning and had to withdraw due to a slow leak in his rear tyre. As a result, his points for the last two runs were then calculated on the highest points for that run group. He was last seen limping home on a skinny spare tyre painted orange.

As for the ICC results, PCQ represented by David P, John D, John K and Glen W came in fourth, with first place taken out by the BMW club, followed by 86 Drivers and MX5. The MR2, Triumph and Lotus clubs filled the minor placings. Thanks go to the BMW Club for organising and running a great event. As for me, the regularity format allows you to take a different approach to driving which is somewhat more relaxed than the sprint events. The disappointment for the day was finding that a high fibre breakfast did not assist in producing regular lap times. Looks like it is back to the drawing board for a new strategy! John Datson

Round 4 Morgan Park 28 April Hard to believe it is Round 4 on the Motorsport calendar and this is the first sprint event for the year. With Rounds 1 and 2 cancelled due to weather and track availability, this event was eagerly awaited with 43 cars participating. The majority of the cars entered were Porsches with the addition of a couple of Nissans, an Evo, Golf, BMW and Audi. The weather was excellent with a slight chill in the morning, then warming to a balmy 25° C resulting in ideal track conditions and no kangaroos or early morning fog. The cars were split into three run groups based on previous lap times with four runs on the long circuit (circuit K at 2,967m) in the morning session and three runs on the short circuit (circuit E at 2,100m) post lunch. A passenger run was organised following completion of the motorsport session. Unfortunately, Kevin Vedelago had to leave early and only managed one run on the long circuit. Bill Black (where is my Boxster) kindly deputised as Motorsport Director in Kevin’s absence. Following Kevin’s journey to the Bathurst Regularity at Easter, he has undertaken a major transformation of his car by removing the multitude of sticker covering most body panels. The car now resembles a Porsche once again instead of a NASCAR flying billboard. David Tilbury arrived at the track in his new white 4 litre GT3 for its maiden track day. The car with its 368kW naturally aspirated engine and 6-speed manual gearbox is capable of sub 4 second 0 – 100kph. An exquisite vehicle. The permanent grin on David’s face said it all. In addition, Minos Mantzavinos sidled up in his latest purchase; a Cayman GT4. This was Minos’s first track day in the car and after a couple warm up runs settled down to recording low 1:30m lap times on the long circuit. A fine result. Ian Bensted had a slight altercation with the track fence while

from John Datson

under brakes. The car kicked and momentarily contacted the fence, damaging several side panels. With the judicious use of black tape, the car was temporarily repaired and was able to continue the event. Mike Miller in his 928 managed to snap a fan belt on the last run prior to the lunch break. A quick dash into Warwick’s SuperCheap store secured the last v-belt in stock. The fan belt was replaced with Mike only missing the first run on the short circuit. It was beholding to witness Greg Turnham’s retailing skills selling PCQ polo shirts. With cardboard box in hand, no drivers or track personnel were safe. “A bargain” he declared “at only $20!”. The rumour has it, that he will be shortly offering steak knives with every purchase. As for the results, Group 1 was dominated by the Cooper clan on both the long and short tracks. Steve’s (the old bloke) best time for the morning session was 1:20.8m, followed by Cameron (the young bloke) with 1:22.1m. Greg Turnham recorded the third quickest time of 1:23.7m with the next eight cars adrift by only 3 seconds. During the afternoon session, Cameron turned the tables on Steve with a best time of 1:05.4m with Steve 0.6 seconds in arrears. It was probably due to the extra weight Steve was carrying after the lunch break. Jason Arnold managed the third best time of 1:08.8m. Group 2 was a close affair on the long circuit headed by Iain Gall 1:27.7m, Antony van der Drift 1:28.0m and David Tilbury 1:28.4m. Most of the remaining cars in this group were only around 3 seconds behind the lead times. The closeness of the times was similar on the short circuit. Antony van der Drift managed a best time of 1:10.5m, closely followed by Leon Cornwall 1:11.16m and Eric van Dyk in the 944 Turbo registered a very respectable time of 1:11.18m. In Group 3, the best times on the long and short circuits were achieved by Laz Reggel in the yellow Evo recording 1:29.3m and 1:11.4m respectively. Peter Campbell 1:30.9 and Minos Mantzavinos 1:31.1m were the next quickest on the long circuit while on the short circuit it was Minos Mantzavinos 1:14.1m and Ian Bensted 1:15.5m. Overall, a great day for sprinting on a great track and well worth the journey to Warwick. A special thanks to Jeff Clancey for managing and timely publication of the lap times, Lee Cooper for organising the B-B-Q and feeding the masses, and Kevin Vedelago for “herding the cats”.

Round 5 Queensland Raceway 20 May

Another great day greeted the second sprint event for the year at Queensland Raceway. The afternoon open sprint event attracted some 100 cars split into five run groups. The Porsche Club booked two run groups, the Toyota 86 Club had one group with the remaining cars allocated to the remaining two run groups generally based on lap times. There were a number of special cars in these later two groups; namely three Mustangs of varying ages, a Cobra with that deep throated V8 sound, and

what looked to be a 1962 Chrysler Valiant, Series S. Thirty-two Porsches and three Associates entered, of which there were five drivers having their first outing on the track. There was Duncan Forbes in a 986 Boxster S, Geoff Brennan with a 987 Cayman S, David Littlewood running a 986 Boxster S Convertible, Matthew Burnett in a 996 C4 SC, and Seraphina Noble with a Mini Cooper S. A warm welcome to you all. Special thanks to Bill Black for assisting the guys with their check-in and registration paperwork as well as vehicle preparation prior to taking to the track. In addition, Adam Bloomer introduced his new 991 four litre GT3 to the track, joining David Tilbury in running the latest refinement of this modern performance car. The good news was that the Porsche groups could use the longer Clubman Circuit while the other three run groups ran on the shorter Sprint Circuit. Kevin Vedelago reminded all drivers to turn right and remain right when exiting the back straight. Loss of body parts would be incurred if anyone turned right then immediately left and ended up on Sprint Circuit. With the fear of God running through our veins, there were no deviations to the Sprint circuit. The format for the day was four runs, with four laps at speed. However, in most cases, drivers were getting five laps a speed

from John Datson

with some driver running up to seven laps. Fields started to thin as the afternoon wore on allowing unfettered runs and minimal traffic resulting in improved lap times. There were several holdups in a couple of the other run groups. Two Toyota 86 cars had an incident on the bend to the main straight with damage to body panels on both cars. The competition in the Transaxle Class was very close between the 944 guys with Eric Van Dyk just edging out Gary Taber and David Yould. It was a similar situation in the Modern 911 Class with the GT3 of Michael Treffene just ahead of Simon Cilento and Glen Wallace all recording 60 second laps. In the Open Class, there was only a 2 second gap between all 5 drivers with a hair breath separating Phil Brook and Kevin Vedelago, followed closely by Jason Arnold, Russell Kempnich and Sven Koremans. Henry Sinclair in the Cayman GT4 lead the way in the Mid-Engine Class with a competitive 60.77 second lap. Henry was followed by the Boxsters of Taavi Orupoid, Bill (where is my mudguards) Black and Duncan Forbes, and John Keep in the 718S all running in the 65 to 66 second range. Enough said on the water pumpers. It is now appropriate to end this report with the results of the Early and Mid 911 Classes. That is to say, the real 911s; air cooled and heaven sent. In the Early group Roger Hall and Don Munro in their 1974 (slightly

modified) E series cars were neck and neck all day lapping in the 61 to 62 second range. As for the Mid 911, the Club Champion Eckhard Schwarting and Antony van der Drift were respectively circulating with best times in the mid-62 second range. The weather provided ideal track conditions to ensure an incident free afternoon of close sprinting and friendly rivalry. The way life should be!

PORSCHE 996 GT3 CUP CAR 2003

First entered in Carrera Cup in 2003 by VIP Pet Foods. My CAMS log book duly signed and stamped shows the full history of the car and its track record since new. I am the fourth owner/ driver of the car after Sherrin Motorsport as the log book indicates. I bought the car from Wayne Hennig in August 2008 in excellent condition and enjoyed several years of club sprints with PCQ and a magic long weekend at Bathurst organised by Trackcorp. The car underwent a complete engine rebuild by Cragsted Performance Engines in 2010 and has spent less than 15 hours on the track since mainly due to health reasons. The car is now silver in colour. Photos and much more information is available on request by those genuinely interested. The car has never had a collision since I’ve owned it as senior PCQ members would know and the log book indicates very little damage earlier. Included are 3 sets of wheels, 2 with slicks and 1 with wets, gauges, high pressure hose and lance for the air jacks and jack stands and tie down wheel rings. Price $75000.00 Contact Trevor Needham 04177 33 275. Email needles2@bigpond.com 1979 911 SC track car $60,000, perfect for someone who wants a simple pathway to club racing. Car was rebuilt from the ground up by Chris Tzanis as Weissach Sport for Porsche Club Victoria ‘C class’. No expense was spared. Car has full roll cage, race seats, 6 pt harnesses, fire extinguisher, etc. Fitted with original fibreglass ‘whale tail’ spoiler and has won PCV C grade and placed third. Always been meticulously maintained by Chris at Weissach and has been incredibly reliable on track. Engine received new Mahle barrels and pistons in 2011. Engine and gear box were completely rebuilt by Chris in 2014 at a cost of ~$20K and all worn parts replaced. Car has only been on track ~10 times since then and was not raced in 2016 till now. 2 sets of Fuchs 15 x 7 + 15 x 8 wheels and 1 pair of rear 16 x 8 Minilite replicas included in price. Selling because I’m just not using the car due to other commitments. Car currently has red plastic covering on bumpers as shown in one image. Car located in Melbourne. Contact Ian – 0419 930 173

1978 911 SC Tarmac Rally Car

This car ticks a number of boxes. Having been built as a tarmac rally car to tackle the likes of the Classic Adelaide Rally etc, it would make a potent road car or basis for a back date build, such as a 1973 RS replica. The vehicle was imported into Australia from Japan in 2002 and subsequently converted to right hand drive using mostly new original panels. Motor and gearbox are original matching numbers. The car comes with a number of worthwhile modifications including the following: Full bolt in roll cage including front side intrusion bars (not shown in photos) Sparco race seats, full harness seat belts, Sports steering wheel, fire extinguisher, battery master switch and cables TerraTrip with wheel probe, tow points front and rear, front strut brace, Brake upgrade to Boxster calipers with braided lines, full pedal box with twin brake master cylinder and brake bias unit, extractors and sports muffler, Weber carburetors, Carrera oil cooler fitted, Turbo tie rod kit The car is in Adelaide and currently registered with unique South Australian number plates SCR-911 (not shown in photos) which are not included in the sale price. The car is being sold to make room for another 911 project. Asking Price is $75,000. I am based overseas so for any enquiries please leave a message on my Australian mobile 0434108525 or contact Mark at RSR Sports Cars in Adelaide on 08 8276 3885 42

1981 Porsche 928S

My 928 is in above average condition for its age, as the pictures no doubt show. It has been my garaged baby for a few years now, however between ongoing family and work commitments, it's not getting any use and I hate seeing it sit there. Car runs well and has low ks (106,553 Kms). The only non-standard parts are the X-Force Exhaust, Koni Shocks and Stereo (with Sat-Nav). I also have a Momo wheel installed, however I still have the original which will be included with the sale. No doubt a few things that a fastidious new owner might want to tidy up, but the car is ready to go without any work being required. I'm negotiable regarding Safety Certificate and Registration and will consider offers over $20k. I am located in Eatons Hill and questions are welcomed. $22,500 Jeff - 0459239271 PORSCHE NEWS
