webmaster’s report Also if you need to keep up to date with any sporting results you will usually find the latest points and results as well as the latest photos on the website around 1 week after the last sporting round. Our club facebook page has also been popular allowing members to share photos, links, items for sale and other info with the rest of the membership who are also on facebook.

Currently we are without a club Webmaster so I have been taking care of business in this respect for 2015. You will now find some new and interesting information/links on our club website http://www.porscheclubwa.org.au/ about concessional licensing, how to join our sports series and most photo galleries are up to date. Our Memberships coordinator Julie Jacobs has graciously put her hand up to organise new club merchandise so we will update to you as to when this will be available, and hopefully we will upload some pics and prices to our website.

In my extra role of webmaster I have also made sure our sporting and social events are up to date on our booking/events website http://porscheclubofwesternaustralia.wildapricot.org/ and also have made sure all reminders for events are sent in a timely manner to keep members up to date. If anyone thinks they have what it takes to become the PCWA webmaster please email me or give me a call anytime. Cheers and Go Porsche Edward Roose PCWA Club President, Webmaster.

president’s report

It’s hard to believe that we are already in April 2015, and it has been a very busy start to the year too. Firstly, I am very happy to report that both in 2014 and this current year the friendship between the PCWA and the Porsche Centre Perth is very strong. I would like to thank PCP for their stellar support of the PCWA in 2014. This has included support by way of sponsorship of the Porsche Centre Cup (won by Gary Jacobs), donations of prizes for various events and our annual Concours D’elegance event, as well as logistical support for other events such as club and committee meetings. 2014 ended in the best possible way, with one of the best attended PCWA Christmas Party/Awards nights ever. Over 80 members and guests, dined, wined & danced the night away and congratulations to all winners of Sporting Trophies and Medals! See a special section in this issue of Porsche West dedicated to the Sporting winners. Thanks also to Graeme (show me the money) Robson for announcing and helping me award the sporting trophies and to Glynis Westall for organising. I do urge all members to attend our 2015 Christmas party which will be held at The Esplanade (Rydges) Hotel in Fremantle. It really is one of the best evenings out you will have with the club! Details are already on our website so register ASAP! Looking to 2015, I would like to welcome David Blainey as the new Club Secretary and Julie & Natasha Irvine to the role of Social Directors from April onwards. Julie & Natasha may very well be the first Mother Daughter team on a PCWA committee! Also welcome back to Bill Richards to a temporary role who has kindly offered his services as the new Assistant Sporting Director for 2015. Bill will be assisting Barry Nash with the 2 PCWA run events for 2015 being the Collie Sprints and later in the year, our Wanneroo raceway event. I would also like to thanks Mark Layton and Barry Elmslie for their efforts in the first ¼ of this year.

The sporting series this year is already shaping up as one of the biggest and best ever with over 45 members competing in SSR1 earlier this year and SSR2 was also very well supported. Also this year we have the implementation of the ladies plate, which although not part of the “official” sporting series points, it is in itself a stand alone competition. I would urge any of our Ladies to have a go and join the ladies plate competition for the remainder of the year. Part of the reason for the big growth in our sports series has been the club subsidised “come and try” track & driver training day earlier in the year. You really need to get your Porsche on the track to understand just how good they are, and this was the perfect “teaser” event that showed members how much fun the Sports Series is! We will be having another come and try/driver training day at MC Motorsport later in the year as a pre-curser to the 2016 sporting series. On the social side of things we have seen quite a few interesting and well attended events for 2015 already and there are more to come in 2015, please keep an eye on the club website for more info. Please note that I must ask all members that if you register for any PCWA event that you inform the club well in advance if you are not able to attend. We did have a breakfast run social event in April where only 4 cars from a registered 17 cars turned up at the meeting point. With only a few very late cancellations we still expected the remaining (registered) members to attend, however it seemed that everyone decided to sleep in! It is most important that you consider this as the club works very hard to offer events to members and needs your support to make them a success! On a more serious note, a committee positions have recently become vacant being the Publications Manager. If any club member is interested I urge you to contact me ASAP as the club cannot function without dedicated committee members who are willing to give a small amount of their time to the club and stay the course for the duration of the year! Well I hope you all enjoy this first installment of Porsche West for 2015 it’s another cracker!

the vp’s rant! At first glance you think it’s a rhetorical question but once you take a second and rethink the question. The answer is not as obvious as originally thought and so I will explain in the paragraphs ahead. Every year we’re presented with more powerful and faster cars in the quest for speed on road or track, with the aid of the latest technological advances and their mind boggling acronyms in tow. So behold the new and mighty 991 911 GT3 RS, with the following statistics such as power of 368kW (500hp), 410 Nm of torque, 3.1 seconds 0-100 Km/hr and top speed of 320 Km/hr make impressive reading taking into consideration the normally aspirated

4.0 litre engine. Even more impressive is the feat of circulating the infamous “Green Hell” (Nuerburgring) in 7 minutes and 20 seconds (faster than the Carrera GT). The GT3 RS achieves this lap time with the aid of the latest engineering feats from Porsche such as the use of exotic materials such as magnesium and carbon fibre to reduce weight, rear-axle steering, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear axle differential lock, PDK (no manual option!) and some very interesting looking aerodynamics to increase downforce. Now coming back to my earlier question, is this new GT3 RS more fun? Well for one thing it doesn’t offer a manual gearbox anymore (even as an option!) which some might construe as sacrilege. The use of all this technology would surely make the driving “easier” and possibly less skill is required to achieve better lap times. Owning a 911 myself I know that a reasonable portion of what attracts drivers to this car

The end of 2014 saw a changeover of Club secretary. Drew Forster carried the duties to the end of 2014 at which time the duties were handed to me. Thanks for your efforts Drew and thanks for the detailed handover. The first quarter of 2015 has been a steep learning curve on the processes involved in being a part of the Committee. I look forward to the rest of 2015.

is the level of skill required to coax the best out of the car. My 964 is far removed from the technological wonder that is the 991 GT3 RS, and I certainly don’t proclaim to be a driver of utmost repute but I do think the lack of the “latest” technology (except for ABS) provides possibly a more purist/ intimate driving experience in my opinion. The 964 or any other Porsche 911 that isn’t endowed with technology such as PASM, rear-axle steering, torque vectoring or PDK transmission will require more “finesse” and also circumspection when driving hard on road or track. So I’m sure I’ll receive a bullous outcry from some of my fellow club members who own fine Porsches of similar ilk to the 991 GT3 RS, but I will still challenge them to the notion that faster is not always more fun. Roger Bernhardt PCWA Vice President.

I’ve been in the Porsche Club since 2010 and have 2 Porsches: a silver 1995 993 Tiptronic Cabriolet for the Social events and a 1969 911T Racecar for the Sport events. I can be contacted by email at secretary@porscheclubwa.org.au or by phone at (08) 9242 8888. David Blainey, Club Secretary

New Cayman race car and all-turbo Carrera range for late 2015 Wolfgang Hatz, head of R & D for Porsche, made some startling disclosures to the road test editor of the UK Motor Sport magazine, Andrew Frankel, in a recent interview:-

911 Carrera. From September EVERY non-motorsport Carrera, from the cheapest model upwards, will have a turbocharged version of the new flat six.

Cayman GT4. This will be a proper motor sport car developed in Weissach, like the GT3, and full race versions will also be available. To Frankel’s suggestion that it would have 400 horsepower, Hatz replied “perhaps not that much, but in that area.” (I wonder if the new GT4 will become Porsche’s front line car in production sports car racing, replacing the various versions of the GT3? A mid-engine configuration is of course the layout of choice for race cars).

Cayenne. A new turbocharged V8 version will enable a further reduction in the Cayenne turbo’s Nurburgring lap time, which is currently 7min 59 secs, or faster than the original GT3 in 1999! (Isn’t this getting a bit silly?)

Boxster. The Boxster will receive a flat-four turbocharged engine within a year. This engine will also be available in the Cayman. There will not be a GT4 version of the Boxster, although a sportier model is in the pipeline. 911 GT3 RS. This will be shown at the Geneva show in March and will be “a far more extreme car” than its predecessor. It will have a brand new naturally aspirated flat six engine.

Panamera. This will get the Cayenne’s new V8 turbocharged engine. Hatz did not confirm or deny that a two-door Panamera is under development. According to Frankel he “simply smiled” at the suggestion. 918 successor. The 918 hypercar (to use the new trendy term for super-supercars) will be replaced later in the decade by something even more extreme based around a V8 power unit. All very exciting. Richard Batchelor

Porsche 911 GT3 RS: the race car for the circuit racetrack and everyday driving Porsche has once again broken down the barrier between sports cars and race cars. The 911 GT3 RS is loaded with the maximum amount of motorsport technology that is currently possible in a street-legal 911, a car that is also suitable for everyday driving. Extensive modifications to the drivetrain, aerodynamics and lightweight design enhance performance even more than in the 911 GT3. With a lap time of 7 min 20 secs, the new 911 GT3 RS even beats the lap time of the iconic Carrera GT which holds a 7 min 29 secs time for the North Loop of the Nürburgring. Motorsport expertise is the reason for this superior performance. The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder engine with 368 kW (500 hp) of power and 460 Nm of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission. The engine, which has the largest displacement and most power of any naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection in the 911 family, accelerates the high-performance sports car from zero to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds. Its combined NEDC fuel consumption is 12.7 l/100 km. Functions such as declutching by “paddle neutral” – which is comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox – and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button have been customised for motorsport use. They give drivers more freedom in terms of driving dynamics, while also providing them with more assistance when driving on a circuit. The 911 GT3 RS is a masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design. For the first time, the roof is made of magnesium; carbon fibre is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids, and other lightweight components are made of alternative materials. This makes the RS model around 10 kg lighter than the 911 GT3. In addition, the lightweight roof lowers the sports car’s centre of gravity which improves its excellent lateral dynamics. The body comes from the 911 Turbo, and it signifies its status as nearly a

10

PORSCHE

WEST

race car driving machine with its RS-specific aerodynamic add-on items. The front spoiler lip, which extends nearly to the road, and the large rear wing reinforce the dominant look. A 30 cm wide recess extends centrally over the CRFP bonnet and the magnesium roof. This feature is a stylistic reference to the recess on the luggage compartment lid of the classic 911 models with air-cooled engines, and today it identifies the two largest lightweight components in the 911 GT3 RS. Another characteristic is the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the wings – just as in pure-bred motorsport cars. They increase downforce at the front axle. The chassis of the 911 GT3 RS has been tuned for maximum driving dynamics and precision. Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear axle differential lock increase agility and dynamics, and the wider front and rear track widths enable even better roll stability than in the 911 GT3. In addition, the 911 GT3 RS comes with the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. The results: even more agile turn-in characteristics and even higher cornering speeds. The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara elements is based on the current 911 GT3. One key new feature is the full bucket seats, which are based on the carbon bucket seats of the 918 Spyder. Other standard features are the Club Sport Package with a bolted-in roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket. The 911 GT3 RS is now on sale in Australia priced from $387,700 with deliveries beginning in the third quarter of the year.

God certainly was feeling very generous for our annual Concours d’Elegance with blue skies and moderate temps shining down on the PCWA. Committee members arrived extra early for the setting up phase of the day with a big thanks going to Drew Forster. Drew has been the “engine room” of the Concours d’Elegance for the past few years, he is the first to arrive and the last to leave, and also puts in all the paperwork etc with local council which is required to stage such an event. Thanks for that Drew let’s hope you can avail yourself for the 2015 event. The day was a wonderful success with a very large turnout of all things Porsche from front engine, rear and mid engine to air and water cooled. We even had the 356 boys make an appearance with their lovely machinery. As the morning turned to late morning and afternoon the bar was opened, the food arrived and members let down their hair and enjoyed the traditional gratis drinkies and lunch. Thanks again to Drew and crew for running the bar, and to and Chris and Glynis Westall for organising all the food, and drinks and Julie Jacobs for helping out with the serving. Indeed thanks to all committee members who attended and did their bit, we are truly lucky to have such a dedicated and hard working committee!

Thanks also goes to Andy Stack and the boys for toiling away manfully in the morning sun to judge the winners of the Blue Ribbon Concours event. And congratulations to the winners: 1. All in all another excellent day of Porsches and sunshine and thanks again to all who attended. Also, as always, a huge thankyou to Porsche Centre Perth for their wonderful financial and logistical support of this event!

A Member of our Family is a 356 Hello fellow Porsche lovers. My name is Shane Cadell I live in beautiful Bridgetown, South West WA with my wonderful wife Peta and our 3 awesome boys Damian, Sean and Cameron. This is a brief story of the magnificent 1959 356 Porsche which has been in our family since August 1963 when my late father Robert Cadell acquired it. The love affair with Porsche started one morning while Mum was on her way to work and spotted a nice looking red sports car in the Midway Motors car yard in Fortitude Valley Brisbane Qld. Keeping the car a secret from Dad, the next morning Mum skipped the first couple of bus stops and walked to the car yard and placed a £2 holding deposit on it. What an awesome wife!!!! That evening Mum broke the news to Dad so the next day he organised a test drive for the following week. Mum and Dad promptly sold their Vauxhall and obtained a loan to purchase the Porsche for £1600. Being their only car it started to rack up many miles in and around Brisbane, Gold Coast, Central Qld and as far north as Townsville visiting family and friends, going to work and attending race meetings. In the mid to late sixties the sight of a funny looking red bubble certainly made for some interesting conversations and always attracted a crowd wherever it went. People would often wait for Mum and Dad to arrive back at the car to ask “What on earth is it?” In 1966 it made its first “Quick” trip to the town of Ayr, North Qld for my grandfather’s funeral and again in 1972 to introduce my grandmother to her new granddaughter. At the tender age of 4 months my sister Nikki was placed in a basket on the back seat and off they went. Apparently she never made a sound and slept all the way, Dad always said it must have been the wonderful sound of the 1600 super purring away beneath her that made her sleep so well. If any of you know or have read about the roads through country Qld back in the late 60’s and early 70’s these trips were certainly an adventure. Dad and the Porsche were very early members of the Qld Porsche Club and also the Qld Motor Sporting Club and would regularly be seen at club meetings, outings and of course Lakeside International Raceway. The Porsche was also used for the annual pilgrimage to Bathurst from the mid sixties through to the early nineties, never once breaking down. I actually found two tickets just recently in the glove box to the 1967 Gallaher 500 with ‘Admit One 50 cents’. Oh how times have changed!!!!! On these pilgrimages Dad and his mates would leave on Friday afternoon driving all night arriving in time to watch practice on Saturday watch the race on Sunday, then drive all night to start work Monday morning back in Brisbane. Covering such distances so quickly and trouble free is testament to the engineering of the Porsche brand and the 356 simplicity. Dad serviced the car every 1500 miles without compromise which is why after 311,000 miles the engine and gear box have never been rebuilt and still work faultlessly to this day. Unfortunately all those miles and rough road conditions 14

PORSCHE

WEST

have taken a toll on the paint and windscreen resulting in thousands of stone chips. The earliest memories I have of the Porsche was when Dad would come home late at night, park the car in the garage under the house he was building, which lucky for me was next to my bed and I would go to sleep listening to the engine and exhaust system crackle and ping for the next few hours as it cooled. At the age of eight I went on my first trip to Bathurst in the Porsche and man what a thrill, zooming through central New South Wales and seeing the wild crowds and shenanigans on top of the Mountain. After the race finished on Sunday and depending upon what time we left, this would determine how fast a trip it was going to be back to Brisbane, and believe me, some were VERY quick. One vivid recollection of the Porsche for my sister was on an occasion when we were heading down to the Gold Coast with her and I in the back and she looked over Dad’s shoulder and said “Dad, I think you’re going a little fast at 110 Km/hr.” Mum, Dad and I looked at each other, laughed, and Dad replying calmly “Its mile an hour dear!” Speed was always something that went hand in hand with the Porsche and something my sister will always remember about the car. With many more long and short trips under its belt the Porsche once again in 1985 took Dad and his brother all the way to a friend’s fruit orchard in Mildura. The car made two return trips over the next couple of months with no issues at all. On the second return trip the only concern was how many Grapefruit they might lose on the way home. Dad had filled the car so full of fruit for friends and family that the only place to fit the remaining large Grapefruit and Oranges was between the overriders and the body, apparently it looked like a mobile fruit bowl. The last Qld Porsche Club meeting Dad and the car attended was in 1995 where he met with the gentleman who had driven the car from Melbourne to Brisbane in the early sixties after the first owner no longer wanted it. The Porsche continued to be used regularly around South East Qld and then retired to the garage from early 2000. Unfortunately Dad passed away in 2011 without driving the car for quite a few years. So in 2012 I pulled it out from under the house, loaded it on my Semi trailer and headed back to WA. First thing I did was to strip, clean and refit the wheel cylinders and master cylinder, drain and replenish all fluids, clean out the fuel tank, replace the fuel tap under the dash, replace a few blown light bulbs and check the steering and wheel bearings. After fitting a new 6v battery and a few squirts of fuel down the Zenith carbs the 1600 super fired again. Once warmed up and running smoothly I took my boys for their first ride in a Porsche, and they loved it, so round and round the block we went, what an amazing feeling to finally be back in a car that I had grown up in, and to share this wonderful feeling and excitement with my own sons made it all that more special.

Since then I have repaired a couple oil leaks, a fuel leak on the right hand carb and driven over 1000 miles, always with my boys riding along. Once I made sure it was at its best for 55 years of age, I flew Mum over from Qld so she could once again enjoy sitting in her long-time friend and enjoy the sounds the ride and memories the Porsche gave her so many years ago. To say the least she was delighted. I could go on forever about the adventures and wild rides we had with the Porsche as a family but that is better left for another day. As the second generation owner of the Porsche my aim is to continue the tradition of having the kids riding in the back have my wonderful wife in the front and do a few “Quick” trips. Hopefully these memories will be shared by my sons one day with their children. Happy driving Shane Cadell

Sports Series Round 8 November 2014

PORSCHE

WEST

Sports series round 8 reached its exciting climax with a morning workout at MC Motorsport. Another solid turnout of competitors filled the grid, watched by other members of the club who had come early to see the action before the (later) driver training afternoon. It was fantastic to see such excellent controlled and (mostly) smooth driving from all competitors. The PCWA sports series competitors are amongst the best I have seen. Well done to Brett Read in his “blue thunder” for turning in the fastest lap of the day of 175.53800 with Grant Wellwood hot on his heals with a 176.75600. Congrats also has to go to the “Mid Engine Boy” Gary Jacobs, Stuart Lister, Daniel Bathe and Graeme (show me the money) Robson with around 1-1/2 seconds separating them!

I would also like to give a special mention to Alex Mokrzycki who improved immensely in the 2014 sports season. If there was an award for most improved Alex would be the worthy winner. All in all, the 2014 Sports series was a closely fought out tussle which was dominated by midengine cars driven by some very good drivers. However there were also some stellar results from both air cooled and water cooled 911’s which we all know require just that little bit more concentration when driven at the limit. Thanks to all who attended the ’14 season and let’s crack on with 2015 which is already proving to be our biggest Sporting Series to date!

Social Drive & Lunch to Beverley November 9th 2014

It was a wonderful morning on this particular Sunday, the sun was shining and everyone was excited at the prospect of an interesting drive from the Perth hills to Beverly. The day started in the most unusual manner for yours truly due to my very first “brush” with the local constabulary since joining the PCWA in 2008. On arriving at the meeting point and busily starting to snap some shots for this very story the boys in blue (actually one boy and one girl) pulled up for a chin wag. I quickly went over to introduce myself as the club president and to allay their fears of any possible club hoonery when they pointed out my car and asked who the owner was. Mr. Policeman told me they had a “call in” on my plate and “other Porsches” from someone on Graham Farmer Fwy. In any case I did explain to the Mr. F. Uzz that while we did not break any of the crowns finest traffic laws there may have been a bit of the obligatory engine revving (at the speed limit) in the tunnel which I assumed attracted the attention of another road user. Indeed I mentioned that it was probably a case of sour grapes; however I was immediately informed that the call had been made by an off duty Officer (who probably ate some sour grapes for breakfast nonetheless) Anyway on to our run, PCWA Club member David Screaigh knows the owner of the Beverley Hotel so the welcome wagon was ready as over 51 PCWA members and guests (around 35 fine Porsche cars) wound their way through some very stunning country roads. Things really started to get interesting once we entered West Dale road which leads into the town, this was as stunning road with plenty of twists, turns, sweepers and line of sight chicanes, plus some beautiful scenery to boot. I am please to report that as usual the club members enjoyed their wonderful 18

cars, the fresh air, the brilliant roads all within the confines of safety and the law. Before lunch members cooled their heels (and toes) in the front bar with come much needed bevies before the call went out for lunch, which was a very nice affair in the hotel’s dining room. As usual we received good old fashioned country pub fair and lashing of it, with some very good quality and large meals on offer. Then came a little bonus moment. While members were finishing off with desert the owner came into to inform us of a road that until recently was unsealed, but had just been given a fresh coat of tarmac. So this secret road heading out of Beverly ended up being the best part of our social drive cutting through some natural forest and open farming land. So mark down another road less travelled discovered by the PCWA. Thanks again to David Screaigh for hosting this event and thanks to all who attended. See you all out there in 2015! Cheers Edward Roose

Driver Training Day November 23rd 2014

After the excitement of the final round of the 2014 Sports Series in the morning prospective competitors for the 2015 series were put through their paces in a controlled driving training programme hosted by MC Motorsport. The afternoon was a wonderful success with over 30 PCWA members whetting their appetite for the ultimate fun of driving their Porsche cars (and a Ford Laser, McLaren & VW Polo) around the track. The racetrack is the place where most Porsche cars have been engineered to perform at their best and this was evident right from the start with new drivers to a track situation finding some excellent pre-flight tips from Jurgen and the staff at MC, mixed with Porsche engineering made for a stellar day of fun, smiles and heart pounding excitement. The reason the committee decided to put this event on was to allow those who may wish to enter the 2015 sports series an insight into the correct way to handle your car on the track, including tips on braking, steering and the correct “racing line to take on the track. Reports flooded back after this day with everyone having a wonderful time with their Porsches and a wonderful array of old and new, rear and mid- engine, 2WD and AWD machinery was display. Thanks to MC Motorsport for their wonderful work, also to 2014 committee members Chris and Glynis Westall for arranging the drinks and sausage sizzle and to all 2014 committee members for their support of this excellent event. We look forward to offering our members more driver training in 2015 so keep an eye on the club website, your email and try to attend a club meeting to find out more. Cheers and see you out there! Sports Series Round 1 2015

26

PORSCHE

WEST

What a huge turnout we had for SSR1 2015! It is great to see the sports series in a healthy state because our club is all about the cars and driving, and what better way to express your inner passion for Porsche than on the track. It really is the home for every Porsche! It seems that all the efforts of the 2014/15 committee has finally paid off and so it should. The sports series & the social side IS what the club is all about! Certainly this was one of the biggest turnouts in club history with over 40 cars hitting the tarmac in a day of thrills, spills and high speed chills!

We had some stunning first up lap times on the popular “oyster” circuit at MC Motorsport. The flying Daniel Devries is back in his stripped out race can and headed the field with a super fast 09:21.324 for his 3 fastest laps. In fact it was fantastic to see the air cooled boys back for this event and they put on quiet a show with fast lap times all over the park. The fastest of the mid engine boys was Daniel Bathe is his flying Boxster S PDK with Gary Jacobs hot on his heels with Stuart Lister and Luke O’Malley not far behind. Other notable performances was by Tim Wolfe in his (genuine) 964RS and Ian Smith in his Boxster.

This year also marks the start of the PCWA Ladies plate, an idea that club member Robin Garbutt had tried to get off the ground in previous years. I am happy to say that as I am now in a position to support this venture I immediately asked Robin if she still wanted this competition at our club, naturally she jumped at the chance! So with the support of our sporting director Barry Nash the ladies plate is up and away for 2015. Thanks to all who attended, we are looking forward to a ding dong battle for honours as the PCWA 2015 Sporting series continues!

Sports Series Round 2 2015 - Jacks Hill It was a sensational morning that greeted us with 27 cars 28 drivers , the largest for Jacks Hill climb PCWA . It was also fantastic to see a good roll up of old and new Porsche . The presentation of the air cooled cars were superb. Colin Strickland was Chief Scrutineer and along with David Blaney they did great job . We got underway slightly ahead of schedule and from the start some cars where very fast Daniel and Simon showed they where serious with some very spectacular controlled finishes After successfully completing three runs the timing gear malfunctioned and could not

28

be repaired. So it was decided to base the points for the championship on three runs only . However if a track record was broken in the fourth it would stick but not count for points, and didn’t the times tumble! Daniel Devres , Chris Westall were new PCWA outright and class records . Then Gerry Willems in his stock 2002 Boxster S (Speed Yellow for those who don’t know) smashed his and Chris Westalls new B class record by breaking into the 54 second . Gerry has had this car since he joined the club in 2006 and obviously knows it like the back of his hand, however this was just one

of those great runs congratulations Gerry . It was disappointing we could not get four completed runs in , and thank the membership for their understanding in the circumstances .This year is shaping as our best ever the numbers are good and the competition tight . So if you have been contemplating having a go , there will never be a better time . I would like to thank Chris and Jayden Clarke , Colin Strickland and David Blaney for making this event possible.

Sports Series Round 3

Lovely weather greeted a full grid made up of 32 PCWA members for sports series round 3 at MC Motorsport. The remainder of the grid was taken up by Alfa Club members and it was great to see these guys and their interesting cars, the mix of cars looked sensational! The new direction the club has taken by having the majority of our dedicated club track days at the RAC (MC Motorsport) complex are proving very popular. It’s a good central location so is close to home for most members and offers a very safe track with generous run off areas. It really is the perfect place to get to know you’re car. With the 2015 PCWA Sports Series in full swing and proving very popular with older and

new members, it will be fantastic when we have a full grid of 40 Porsche cars. I can see in the near future, we will need two sessions one morning and one afternoon, should the series continue to grow as it has been! It’s interesting to see air cooled cars (Daniel and Simon) dominating the competition at the moment. Can the likes of Alan or Gary come back to the top? Time will tell in the meantime it is thrilling to see the sports series alive and well. Which brings me to my next point, it will be three years since I took over as Sports Director at the end of this season and it is time for me to be stepping down at the end of the 2015 season. So now is the perfect

time for the next sporting director to learn the ropes. If anyone is interested please give me a call on 0429189987 to discuss. To make things easier for the incoming director I will continue to carry out Steward duties at club events in 2016 and be there to offer advice and support. The roll can be challenging and very rewarding . Maybe two or more members could jointly run it, maybe even a husband and wife team? There is terrific back up and help from the committee and president. This could be done by a competing member. So put your hand up your club needs you for 2016! Cheers and see you at the track! Story: Daniel Bathe

“Like Son – Like Father”

My love of cars all started back in Belfast, Northern Ireland as a kid. It was the mid seventies (I’m giving away my age here!) and our next door neighbour was a successful businessman who was fortunate enough to afford the best in cars. Tom Beare would change his car every six months (the neighbours used to joke that he would get a new car when the ashtray needed emptying!). He always had a nice saloon as well as a sports car. When I saw a new one rolling into his driveway I would go over and drool over his latest purchase. Tom soon realised that I liked cars so he would take me out for a spin as soon as he got a new one home. I would go out in Mercedes S-class, BMW 7 series, Jaguar Double Six, but it was always his sports cars that fascinated me most. The Jaguar XJS was refined, the BMW 6 series classy but it was the day he came home in the first Porsche 928 in Northern Ireland that I knew that one day I’d eventually own a Porsche. This car was in a different league to the others – in fact, it looked in a different century! He took me out for a spin and the thing I remember most was the g-forces when he pushed it around a corner. He then maxed it on the main motorway (we only had two in those days!) and it was the first time I’d ever hit 150 mph. I was hooked on fast cars! Fast forward to 1984. I’m working for Shell on a construction barge offshore Borneo and I would regularly head back to the UK for a holiday. Initially I hired a car to get around, but soon realised I was laying out a lot of cash with nothing to show at the end of it. So I decided to buy a sports car that I could keep in the UK for holidays, one which didn’t cost much to buy and wouldn’t depreciate badly. I set a budget of 4,000 pounds, which was all I 32

PORSCHE

WEST

had at the time, and ended up buying a 1966 Jaguar E-Type Fixed Head Coupe. It had been sitting in a chicken barn in Yorkshire for 8 years, with chickens in it! The previous owner had bought lots of spare parts to rebuild it, but never got started. So I parted with my money and bought this rust heap and, together with my cousin, we rebuilt it. We finished it just in time for my wedding in 1985, and Clare and I drove off into the English sunset in the Jag. We still have the Jag here in Perth and next year she turns 50 (the Jag, not Clare!). Fast forward to 2005 and we’ve settled down in Perth, the kids are 13 and 10, and I feel that the time has finally come to splash out on a fast car – so I buy a new Subaru WRX STi. Fairly quickly I realise that for a modest outlay it was possible to seriously improve the performance and sound, so a few thousand bucks later I have a 270 kW all wheel drive “family saloon”. That was when I first realised that my younger son, Sean, had the same passion about cars that I have – he would love the acceleration and the thumping boxer exhaust sound. He talked non-stop about this car and that car – he was fast becoming a walking encyclopaedia on cars. We started going up to Barbagallo together to watch the racing and before long we were heading over every March to Melbourne to watch the Formula 1 together. We would walk around the various displays and he would tell me the top speed of just about every car there! It was great father-son bonding and we would always have a ball. Like many kids of his generation, Sean spent a lot of time on the Play Station playing Grand Tourismo. We had a set up with a steering wheel, gear stick and three pedals and we

would race each other around the famous race tracks. Not surprisingly it wasn’t long before he was beating me! He knows every single one of the 172 corners of the Nordschleife. Having turned 16, Sean was now driving for real. He was a natural and passed his test first time around. It didn’t take long for him to start talking about his first car. Thankfully he wasn’t into Holdens or Fords, so I didn’t have to talk him out of wanting a V8. One day he walked up to me and declared that he had decided what his first car would be – I braced myself for what was coming next. He said it had to be a sports car, a good handler, good looking etc. and after lots of research he decided to save up for a Mazda MX-5. What a great choice – it was something that didn’t have huge horsepower, but had a great fun-factor. We immediately

did a deal – if he wanted to buy his own car then he would have to stump up half of the purchase cost and I would put up the rest. In his next summer vacation Sean got a job scrubbing pots in an Italian restaurant in Scarborough. He worked long hours every day and by the end of the summer he had saved up enough to pay for his half of the car. Thanks to carsales.com.au he became the proud owner of a 10 year old MX-5 in 2013. Two years earlier I had finally decided that the time to own a Porsche had come. I bought a 2007 Boxster S from Chellingworth and just loved the step up in quality, fit and finish compared to the STi. I joined the PCWA and in 2012 I finally stumped up enough courage to go to one of the sporting days. What a great way to appreciate your Porsche and what a nice bunch of people too. I could finally enjoy driving the car the way it was designed without worrying about losing my licence! I wasn’t particularly quick, however I found the tiptronic to be a bit limiting. Up pops Sean, with his laptop and carsales.com. au, and tells me that I need to upgrade to a 2009 model with the new Direct Injection motor, PDK and Sports Chrono. We were getting organised to head over to Melbourne on our annual F1 pilgrimage and Sean spotted a 2009 Boxster S with the right options for sale in Melbourne at a reasonable price. Two weeks later whilst over at the Grand Prix I end up buying my second Porsche! Sean is thoroughly enjoying driving his MX-5, there seems to be lots of girls looking for a lift to one place or another. One day he joins me at a PCWA track day to try out his racing skills. He really enjoys it, and before long he also joins the Perth MX-5 club. Once again his laptop comes out and he discovers the “Flying Miata” website in the US. It stocks all

sorts of parts to modify your MX-5 at really cheap prices. Parts start to appear at the front door step. A racing exhaust, coilover suspension, thicker sway bars, cold air intake, roll over bar, bucket seat, racing harness...... the list goes on! Clearly the Garden pub in Leederville pays their glass collectors very well indeed! With all of these mods, Sean is now becoming very competitive in the Mazda club racing series and is putting a decent show in the PCWA events too. Normally the phrase goes “like father - like son” but in this instance I think it should be “like son – like father” as Sean now starts advising me that if I want to be competitive on the track then I need to do some mods to the Boxster. Track tyres and some upgraded brake pads are the first purchases – wow, what a difference they make! Suddenly I’m starting to become more competitive in the field and I’m having a ball. But Sean tells me that the car is diving a lot under braking and is leaning a lot in the corners – he says I need to toughen up the suspension. So the next purchase is a set of adjustable top hats and a KW adjustable coil-over kit (thanks goes to John Fowler for his advice and set-up). At about the same time I realise that I’m missing the sound of a sporty exhaust (memories of that throbbing STi exhaust come flooding back!). I’ve always liked the sound of Gary Jacobs’ beautiful Cayman S, and so a month later on goes a Capristo exhaust – I recon it’s the closest sound to a GT3 outside of a GT3! As 2014 drew to a close, Sean is battling to win his class in the Mazda club and his “old man” is doing likewise in the Porsche club. In the end we both come second which somehow seems just perfect. Now we’ve both got something to aspire towards in 2015!

I’d especially like to thank Barry Nash and Julie Jacobs for kindly awarding Sean a “Rising Star” trophy at the Concours Day in South Perth. It took Sean totally by surprise and the trophy now sits proudly on his study desk in his bedroom. My thanks also go to the fantastic sporting members for welcoming Sean and his little MX-5 into the club and allowing a father and son to enjoy their shared passions together. We’re both looking forward to an exciting 2015 racing season. As an aside, my old neighbour Tom is now in his mid-70s and is currently driving around in a Bentley Continental GT....at least until the ashtray needs emptying!

PCWA Come & Try Track Day

January 25th 2015

What a difference a year makes! One of the greatest pleasures of working with the current PCWA Committee is how we all learn from previous events to make them better next time, and that is exactly why the 2015 event was so good! This years organisation was a lot better and the numbers were limited to 40 members to allow lots of track time and super smooth organisation. Indeed we had so much track time that although the track was open until 6.30 pm most punters had their fill by 6.00 pm. The real winners on the day where those of the PCWA membership who attended this event. The training and track time they received was priceless and as the sporting director it made me very happy to see the improvement of all drivers on the day. The whole idea behind this PCWA subsidised event is to allow members to gain knowledge and confidence with their Porsche on a real race track (while having a lot of fun also) with a view to then opening up the possibility of entering our every growing sports series. When all is said and done Porsche cars are designed for this and perform superbly , they really do “come into their own” when they are being pressed in a track environment, it is what they are engineered to do! This year the President (Edward for those who don’t know him) decided to award a cup to the most improved driver on the day. The winner was decided by MC Motorsport Guru Jurgen who travelled in pretty much every car for most of the day. It gives me great pleasure to announce the winner of the 2015 “CAMS PCWA Track Day Cup” was awarded to Jo Beer in her lovely 987 Boxster Spyder. Well done Jo. Jurgen (in making his decision) made 34

the comment of correct hand positioning on the wheel, and smooth application of steering inputs, braking pressure and power delivery. I hope to see you in our sporting events this year! To all members our sporting series has gained traction (except when there is oil on the track lol) and I am happy to report that this year we will also have a ladies specific class ! Australia Day Porsche Club/Ferrari Club Social Drive January 26th 2015

The traditional Australia Day social drive returned to the PCWA calendar in 2015. A wonderful (not too hot) sunny day welcomed all comers. The lack of heat and rain meant there was a more than the usual amount of Ferrari’s coming out to play, one could say it way “Ferrari” weather. As is the norm there was also a very good turnout of Porsches! After the usual photo and car chat session between the PCWA and FCA the cavalcade headed off to the hills for their luncheon destination. While the route we took organised by the FCWA was not what the PCWA is used to (read: mostly main roads with little back roads) it was an easy cruise allowing bystanders to check out (drool over) the machinery heading east. On arrival members were treated to some home made Pizza and Olive oil products. However, while being hand made coupled with the large number of members attending, the Pizza did take some time to come out. Despite this I am can report that it was worth the wait and most members were very happy with the quantity and quality of the food. Thanks to all who attended and to the FCWA for the invite. We will be reciprocating the invitation in the near future so please keep an eye out on our website for another PCWA/FCWA co-hosted social drive!

Porsche Driving Experience

We’ve all heard the saying “the Porsche Driving Experience”, but dare I say, there are likely only a handful of very fortunate people out there in this world that really have experienced the numerous vehicle variations pumped out by the Porsche factory over the past 60 years. In general, it’s the factory test drivers, race drivers and the mega rich that had the opportunity to own, drive and race these creations to their limits in controlled and exciting environments. If you are a Porsche tragic/fanatic, then your options are somewhat limited – especially if you reside in Western Australia! However, this article is supposed to create some hope for those out there that want a taste of this “Porsche Driving Experience”. I guess I was one of these people and this is my story… Having worked as an “automotive engineer” for the past 33 years (still at it) has created a huge passion for automotive history, especially Porsche, as this is naturally and without question “the” marque to behold (no debate required). I’ve always been interested in the various model developments over the years, the successes, the failures and their competition history. Big problem – never really had the necessary cash to fund the “Porsche Driving Experience” dream! Eventually, we came up with Option 1 – buy a cheap Porsche. Ok, sounds simple enough, but one has to tread very carefully when buying the “cheap” Porsche (need I explain?). In a nutshell, a Porsche that is about to fail can cost more than the initial “cheap” purchase price, so do your homework and find a mechanically sound example (i.e. specialist mechanical check) and acceptable body/chassis condition. My first cheap (love of my life) Porsche was the 968, yes, my dream car as a 35yo way back then. It all started when I was walking through a 38

dealership in Los Angeles in early 1992 and came across the 968 on the forecourt. It was just released on the American market and could be bought new (drive away) for under US$40k – wow, that seemed like great value! Unfortunately, on my return to Perth the local price had a “1” in front of it, i.e. AU$140k. Import duty, taxes, exchange rate, transport costs, compliance costs blablabla – that put an end to that dream……. Over the years I maintained a passion for these “affordable” Porsche cars, as they looked great and still do, they were practical and had exceptional stability and cornering abilities. The 968CS race series in the UK was also an absolute spectacle and produced very competitive, if not desperate, racing. Sure, the purist would say the 968 is not really a Porsche and there is quite some truth in this. The 968 is the final extension of the original Porsche 924 released in 1976. The 924s were built in the Audi factory with an Audi engine/transaxle and lots of Audi/VW parts. The 944 followed in 1982, but at least the 944 engine was Porsche designed and built (but many thanks to Mitsubishi Japan for that twin balance shaft patent!). The vehicle was still assembled at Audi in Neckarsulm. The final version in 1991 was the 968 that was built at the Porsche Zuffenhausen plant until final production in mid-1995. I’m having a dig at the 924/944 members out there, as at least the 968 was built under a real Porsche sign. I’ll concede that if you look at the transaxle under the rear of a 968, you will note the Audi symbol on the casings, i.e. the 4 ring symbol, so that Audi heritage lasted on until the very end….. OK – enough of the history, the 968 is a great first time car for the Porsche fanatic. If they are too expensive, then the 944/S2 & Turbo are another choice. If cash is a real

concern, a well sorted 924/turbo can be quite amazing, especially on “short” track or street. I got around the problem by finding a right hand drive 968 that was imported from Japan. Most Japanese cars are LHD, but this one was a special factory ordered RHD for the Japanese market. It also had the very desirable M220 limited slip differential (LSD) fitted – a perfect option for track days. Because it was a little rough around the edges and an import, the sale price was adjusted accordingly. To me, it was a bargain and a perfect car for the PCWA sports series in 2007. It can be a hard call when you have a pristine example and you take it out for a track day. A few extra upgrades, namely the M030 sway bar package, kept the body roll very flat during cornering. Tyres recommended by John Fowler and suspension settings adjusted by the late Bob Murray from Wheels World turned this car into a class winning (and very nearly club championship winning) contender during the PCWA 2007 sports series. The 1992 Porsche 968, the best kept secret is out - “the tarmac track weapon of choice”………? Needless to say, I wasn’t content with just the 968 “Porsche Driving Experience” on its own – hope that doesn’t sound too greedy. I wanted to understand what all the fuss was about regards the 911 series coupe’s rear engine “pendulum effect” or the legendary handling of the mid-engined 914 (to start with) that morphed into the more recent Boxter/Cayman series. I’d read and heard all about the attributes of these models from fellow club members, but never really understood what they were on about, so decided to take another plunge……. So, purely by coincidence, the PCWA was in discussions about purchasing and running a

well and allegedly 1.8 litre barrels, instead of the 1.7 litre barrels. The fuel injection system was removed and replaced with a Webber carburetor – something that owners did soon after buying them new I hear!

club car, i.e. to transport stuff around between events etc, but also to promote PCWA club activities. We were at Chellingworth’s for a meeting and Alistair (Porsche sales rep) had some leads on available cars that may suit. I don’t know where the idea came from, but Alistair knew of a Porsche 914 that might be up for sale – a kind of a barn find type fable we thought. The 914 was dropped from discussion as a PCWA club car pretty quickly….., however, I couldn’t get the thought out of my head…… The car did have quite an extensive story behind it, one of which involved who really did own it, where it resided and what sort of condition was it really in. The car belonged to a Don Baker and he had no further use or desire for the car. He lived in the Perth hills and the car was stored at Willy Baumeister’s place in Bassendean. Of course, Don had been unwell and was not very mobile and Willy worked /lived in the Philippines. After much searching, calls and hassling, I managed to get permission to view the car. My biggest regret was not taking pictures of it when first discovered in Willy’s driveway!! It was covered in unfolded cardboard boxes, leaves and old carpets (to keep the rain out apparently)……… need I say more. The windows were down, the cardboard was sodden and the carpets stunk of mold – however, underneath I could see a bright canary yellow Porsche 914!! It looked complete and as Don had told me, was drivable when taken there a few years earlier. Needless to say, it wasn’t driving anywhere in that condition. I instantly wanted it, and being my 10th wedding anniversary, convinced my wife that the “old” traditional present for a tenth wedding anniversary was “tin and aluminium” (I’m not lying – look it up!). It was perfect – how much Tin and Aluminium can you get in one present! My wife reminded me that the modern present was in fact Diamond jewelry, hence it became a compromised (albeit expensive) anniversary. I got the 914 and she got the diamond ring – guess who got the best gift!! I was over the moon with this purchase! The car was basically stock standard (with left hand drive, as they never made factory right hand drive 914’s)! It had the desirable Riviera wheels as

around in a LHD 930 turbo, but also had a few ’87 model Carreras – one destined to be a 3.6 litre special. Anyway, Bill had a stock Red ’87 Carrera that he and his wife had toured around the USA in and brought it back to Perth. It was for sale at a very modest price to an enthusiast, so I bought it (again, left hand drive – as they were designed to be!!). The LHD was fully registered in WA and I know some people don’t like them, but, at around half the cost of an Australian delivered car, I thought it was well justified and the car was great. Bill did an excellent job in mechanically sorting the car before sale and it never missed a beat. I was now experiencing my first rear engine Porsche and had to adjust my driving style accordingly. It was something I never really mastered, after so many years in a 968 which makes an average driver look good, the 911 showed me I wasn’t nearly as good as I thought – but I now understand and experienced the “pendulum effect” so often referenced with these rear engine cars! It was a handful and with no ABS either…… My wife Andrea just loved this car (simply put – it was red and had the Porsche 911 classic shape). This period air cooled 911 will always have a devout following and I guess I became one of them.

How to make a 914 look “full size”….. Note the period Yoko Ono Porsche design sunnies! With some work and little expense, the car was a runner. It was always fully licensed and was a great hoot to drive. In standard form, these cars were fun. Of course they were slow, had poor brakes (even when they all worked properly) and were very slim on luxury. Interior heating always seemed to be “on” and forget air con, just take the targa roof off and it’s all done!! Many owners fitted the 6 cylinder Porsche engines and 911 running gear to make the 614/6 a track weapon. The factory versions won the GTS class at Le Mans in the 1970’s and naturally, they became famous overnight. I never “tracked” mine, mainly because it felt so unsafe in standard form!! The handling was as I’d been told all along – it was sensational (better with the roof on though, to stiffen the chassis)!. It really was go-kart like on the road (no power assistance either). The big claim to fame this car had was that Don and a PCWA member friend drove it across the Nullarbor (Perth to Melbourne) in standard kit, so they could attend the Porsche Festival Melbourne for the “50 years of Porsche” Rally celebrations in 1998. Don was ever so proud when this 914 was wheeled up onto the stage during the presentations – do you think he ever took a photo of that? Apparently not and I’ve searched high and low for one! Here’s a challenge, if you or someone you know went to this event, please send me a photo of my old 914 – as I sold it on a few years ago now….. To move the story along a bit, naturally, a 911 had to be experienced as well. Up until this point, I had never driven one myself. As fate would have it, a fellow PCWA member, Bill James had one for sale. He had brought some 911’s in from the USA. Bill was driving

The “chick magnet” Porsche 911 Carrera from 1987 – Guards red, tan interior, classic beauty…….. The “Porsche driving experience” was being covered at an extraordinary rate. As an engineer, we tend to do things with graphs and tables. To me, the “Porsche Driving Experience” was meant to cover all the different variations of the Porsche vehicles available, i.e. rear versus middle versus front engine Porsche etc. Here is the table I came up with to ensure my test matrix was broad enough, versus my budget! Dare I say this, but without a doubt, the Porsche 968 was my favorite vehicle. All it needed was more power and better brakes – a bit like the factory Turbo RS variants that fetch staggering auction results (with only 4 made) – and several “replica” versions on the market as well. The variations included the decade of manufacture, the colour, the steering side, the wheel size, etc. Mastering the various transmission gate patterns changing from left hand drive to right hand drive was the biggest challenge, i.e. 1st and reverse gear seemed to change location Issue 1 - 2015

The Spyder was a very true form replica of the original made famous by the late James Dean for all the wrong reasons back in the mid1950’s – mind you, he did name the car “Little Bastard”. This car was definitely an open top experience and about as raw as it gets on the road. The 550 weighs in at around 590kg, so is also one of the lightest road going Porsche models available. The Spyder was famous for being driven under closed railroad crossing gates during the 1954 Mille Miglia (must have been desperate for that win!) and raced as a roadster at the Nurburgring Eifel Race in May 1953 winning its first race. In the world of car racing, the Spyder soon earned the reputation as the ‘Giant Killer’. I’m very fortunate to have had the “Porsche driving experience” in a vehicle with such amazing heritage. One could say that the current Boxster/Cayman is the 21st Century version of the 550 Spyder, both being true to form mid-engined cars.

Great fun, open top touring with a happy wife. The new and the old – Spyder versus GT3. Next in line was the 1989 911 Carrera Cabriolet, the 25th anniversary model of Porsche and had a special paint diamond blue metallic code that made it stand out in the crowd and Ferry Porsche “signature” front seats. I felt the only way to enjoy this car to the maximum was to take my wife Andrea for a run to Millbrook Winery a few years ago. The open top “driving experience” in this car was far more sophisticated that say the 550 Spyder was! And yes, Andrea’s hair was a mess at the end of the drive, but what was left of mine wasn’t a problem!

Another Porsche driving experience with open top motoring at its classic best ….need I say more? Introducing the 1989 Carrera Cabriolet 25th Anniversary model (USA version). So, in the end, delusion had set in…….what was the next Porsche going to be…. It took 18 months of indecision and no Porsche to drive, having set my eyes on the Cayman S as the way to go next. On paper it was the obvious choice, I did drive several models and there is no doubt these are one of the best Targa cars around – just ask Jim Richards. For me, the Cayman S or R didn’t quite have the special zing that I was looking for. Fantastic car, but something not quite there for me – was it the heritage that was lost…….the Mezger series engines? Mind you, one day I may revisit that Cayman S………… especially after seeing them in action in round 1 of the PCWA 2015 sport series. Answer to all of the above choices was in the end quite simple, but expensive….. and to get my wife’s approval, would also need to be Red and classic shape. I blame her for the expensive path this took us down, but the end result has been totally satisfying and enjoyable. Thanks to Andrea, Chellingworth and the previous owner of our new found family member – a Guards Red Porsche 997 Turbo!! (manual transmission with limited slip differential, sports chrono, Ceramic Brakes and Sunroof). The list of options fitted is endless and the driving experience hasn’t finished just yet. Long live the Porsche marque and long live the Porsche fanatics that keep these vehicles, clubs and events on-going – hence keeping the “Porsche Driving Experience” well and truly alive for all!! I can’t imagine what comes next from Porsche, but if the past 60 years is anything to go by, it will be just sensational!!

Maybe if you leave them all together locked away at night, there may be a new Porsche variant conceived and born? (but nothing eventuated). Further to the above, I’ve also been very fortunate to have a great friend who has trusted me to borrow his Porsche 550 Spyder (replica) and 1989 911 Carrera Cabriolet on occasion to further the experience. Only in the USA

Last year on a Sunday morning, my wife and I decided upon a 15 minute walk from our hotel to visit one of Washington DC’s iconic museums. Mid journey, we were stopped and directed to not cross certain roads, stay on foot path areas away from road edge. Obeying authority, we strolled further to find teams of police, controlling a ‘scene’ to keep pubic safe. By chance have we strolled upon a crime scene? Or, is this president Obama’s morning jog? Curious locals and tourists alike are now forming crowds on the street edge, keen to not ‘miss out’ on this unknown spectacle! Shortly after it became obvious, a film crew positioning themselves ready for a high speed ‘take’ for a Redbull Global Rallycross commercial. We all watched with great excitement as a race prepared rally car tore up the streets of Washington, escorted by two real life police motorcyclists and two black ‘Fed’ cars.

Free entertainment, what more could an Aussie tourist want? We stood watching each film take as the race car screeched, revving loud, and blasted past us, then drift into spectacular controlled slides at the bottom of our street.

The film crew were in style, a specifically modified Porsche Cayenne, with all trims, and lights blacked out (reduce reflection for filming) was being used. It was an obvious choice for the task at hand, a large 5 seater to accommodate sound and film crews, space for equipment yet fast enough to keep up with the motorcade and race car. From the Cayenne’s roof was slung, dare say welded to the roof pillars, a long rotating crane (pity

I probably couldn’t recall too much detail from the museum we eventually saw that day, as the highlight was the walk to get there. Its moments like these that makes the difference for an independent traveller and Porsche lover! David & Lisa Sherry 2006 997 Turbo

story: Rudy Menke & Brendan Wright

A Porsche 911 SC love story

It began with the first new car I purchased, which was originally designed by Ferdinand Porsche and was a new VW Super Bug a few years back in 1972. This purchase was a tossup between a Torana GTR and an MGB, but as I was only an apprentice Panel Beater, with a limited budget the VW won, mainly due to insurance costs. My younger brother Wal acquired the Beetle from me in 1978, as I needed a larger vehicle and I have had many shapes and size vehicles over the years, being in the motor industry for many years. I then purchased the Beetle S back from Wal in 2002. It had lived out doors for many years and although solid, looked very sad. Bringing it over from Melbourne I restored it and it is still in the family today. Our son Karl purchased it in 2011, with conditions, that it cannot be chopped or sold outside the family. He won a trophy at the 2013 Day of the Volkswagen, for best standard bug 1967 - present. One Saturday morning back in 2003 I was browsing through the motoring section over coffee, as was the ritual when I came across an advert advising that the annual Porsche Concourse was on at Joondalup Country Club that day, which was just up the road. I said to Jenny my wife,”let’s go up and have a look/ see”, as Porsche and particularly the 911 has always been the love of my life!! (besides Jenny of course). Jenny reluctantly agreed and of we went!! We drove up in Jen’s Nissan 200SX Turbo (The Rice Burner) and there she was, the model, the colour and the For Sale sign!!! I said to Jen “there she is” - a 1981 white 911SC. The then owner Norman Wright was busy in discussion with others at the time, so I meet with others, who I knew from the Volkswagen Car Club WA, of which I was a member to find out a little history of the 911SC. Later I walked back to the 911SC only to see Norm drive out the country club drive, leaving me in the dust, before I had a chance to talk with him. I called him that week and purchased the vehicle from him the following weekend and Jen’s rice burner was replaced by a classic car. 42

I recently sold the SC after near 12 years of wonderful ownership to up-date to a 997 and have had a terrific time experiencing the driving pleasure, reliability and performance from the 81 3.o litre classic. I advertised the SC on CarSales.Com and had many enquiries, with a very interested one from Sydney. While in negotiations I received an email from a gentlemen here in Perth asking if the vehicle was previously owned by Norm Wright – the writer being Brendan Wright, Norm’s son, who came over and inspected the SC and purchased it.

In late 2003 dad was forced to sell the car he loved so much after an experimental course of chemotherapy resulted in permanent loss of feeling in his hands and feet. It was bittersweet to see him parted with his pride and joy but I know that he was comforted by the fact that it had gone to another enthusiast and a PCWA member, Rudy Menke. Dad did see Rudy through PCWA events in the years that followed and it always left him with a heavy heart that he could no longer indulge in the thrill of owning/ driving a Porsche while reminiscing of happier times.

This is Brendan’s story:I was attending car shows with my dad (Norman Wright) before I could walk – or so my mum tells me. He loved everything to do with cars, particularly the exotic marques like Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari. If he wasn’t driving them, he was looking at them, comparing them, discussing them or sharing with me his knowledge of them. Rarely would we go anywhere without him pointing out a particular make/model to me that had caught his eye. When the time came for him to finally indulge in his passion, the choice was simple - it had to be a Porsche. Dad decided that the best way to go about purchasing a Porsche was to talk to the people that knew them – so he joined the Porsche Club of WA. It was after extensive discussions with club members at the time that he found his first Porsche – a 1977 911 S 2.7L in Guards Red – that he purchased in 1998. He was hooked from this point on and the Porsche brand had left its mark – so it was no surprise that in 2000 he upgraded after finding his dream car – an Australian delivered 1981 911 SC 3.0L in Grand Prix White. This car was everything he had ever wanted and every spare moment was spent driving the car around Perth or attending PCWA events and track days. I remember how protective he initially was of the car – I was 20 years old at the time and there was no way he was letting me behind the wheel. Over the years that followed, he eventually let me and my sisters share in his passion and get behind the wheel. My youngest sister even had the distinct honor of driving the car whilst on learner plates!

Unfortunately, dad passed away in May 2008 but his love of cars and the thrill of driving a Porsche lives on through me. It is this love that drove me to keep an eye out for ‘his’ car over the years that followed. Whether you call it luck or fate, in January of this year the time had come for Rudy to pass on the car to another enthusiast and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time - the rest they say is history. I am hopeful that one day, I will be able to pass on the same love of cars and the 911 SC my dad once owned to my own son.

PCWA 2015 Track Day Cup winner

However, it wasn’t until we moved to WA from UK in 2001 that my dream of getting a sports car become reality. I started off with a little Mazda MX5, then a BMW but I really wanted something a bit different. My weekday journey to work took me past the Porsche garage in Nedlands and often as I waited for the traffic to move I was stationary outside the dealership. So it wasn’t long before I was tempted in…

About the PCWA Track Day Cup: The Track Day Cup is a new innovation that we hope to award at the beginning of every year at our annual “Come and try” Track day. This trophy was awarded by Jurgen (from MC Motorsport) to the PCWA member who displayed the most improvement in their track driving style and smoothness during our come and try day. Jo Beer is our inagrual winner, this is what she had to say:

The spyder caught my eye last year and was taunting me daily. I wasn’t sure what model it was as it looked quite different. After a bit of research via Dr Google and a very amusing You Tube video from Top Gear I thought I’d take a little look, well that’s all I needed really…mission accomplished – the deal was done and I had my dream car The Spyder, now all I needed to do was tell my husband… I’d had her for a couple of months when something interesting happened. I had parked my car in a different spot to normal at work and when I got in at the end of the day someone had placed a Porsche Club card on my windscreen. When I looked up the club there was information about the Come and Try Day. Whilst I have done laps in a V8 before and absolutely loved it, doing

the same in my Spyder was just such a great opportunity to really open her up and see how she drove at speed and meet fellow enthusiasts. So I joined up there and then. On the day I have to say I was very nervous – thinking I’d take out the cones or go the wrong way around – but I did Ok – the first lap the speed of a snail, but by the third go things were coming on. My hands were shaking like some kind of detox response and I was sure that I didn’t sweat this much at the gym, but the instructors were very encouraging and enthusiastic. It was a great day – seeing all the other cars out on the track was a sight in itself – being part of it was even better. Whilst it was a great day out (and I am still in shock that I won the trophy), and I had a fantastic time I am not sure if I am ready to take my baby out on the track again just yet…as its my only car I do need to keep it in ship shape and operational. So I suppose the only answer to that is to have another one just to race in…

By Jo Beer PCWA Member

I have had a passion for sports cars and dreamt of owning one for as long as I can remember. This probably stems from my fathers influence who was an engineering journalist so was always bringing home different cars to test drive and write about. Often they were quite ordinary, maybe the latest model or new design, but sometimes he would get something a bit special – like a Porsche and we would go off on long drives together. One day he picked me up from school in an Aston Martin – now that was amazing, and it did heaps for my popularity! Issue 1 - 2015

Due to some incorrect weather reports of possible storms coupled with the Melbourne Grand Prix some late cancellations meant it was a small but very enthusiastic group of around 20 PCWA members that enjoyed what can only be described as a “wonder drive” to Cervantes. 2 routes were offered on the day, the first being “cruise control” which offered members a small amount of backroads followed by an easy stretch down the Indian Ocean Drive, the other was “launch control” which was super duper backroads taking in the most stunning scenery coupled with traffic free roads that were largely very smooth and wide. It was not surprising that everyone opted for “launch control” so off we all went on our adventure. One of the bonuses of driving in the north eastern parts of our country side is that roads are very good with lack of farm driveways so you are not always on the lookout for farmer Joe pulling out in front of you. Also as most of the roads are fenced there is less chance of Kangaroo’s and other wildlife coming across your path. So you can enjoy an excellent line of sight while driving and there is much less chance of your Porsche coming to grips with the local fauna. Having a smaller group (of 11 cars) proved to be a blessing disguise as the group managed to stay together for the entire route. We also stopped from time to time to have a talk (rave) about the previous section. And I am happy to report that almost every section of road was true to the word “Stellar” One section of road in particular (see main pic) heading into Cervantes is just a piece of tarmac paradise. The road stretches for miles with vision of the road ahead as far as you can see. Along with the elevated postion and the Indian Ocean in the background it makes for an “Omega Man” kind of feeling that you and your group are the only ones ever to use this road! On arrival at the Pinnacles Edge Resort members were treated to some cold refreshments while swapping stories about the drive followed by a super value high quality lunch. Many of the members decided to take the “cruise control” option home but a smaller group with yours truly included took the reverse “launch control” route home. This was also a “reckie” run as one of our club members intends to use part of the route for an upcoming social drive. Thanks to all who attended. If anyone would like a copy of this route for a future alternate drive north instead of the (yawn) Indian Ocean Drive please let me know. Cheers and see you out there! Edward Roose.

The afternoon we met in Midland for the run was a hot one, so we were all looking forward to the day becoming cooler as we drove towards our final destination for dinner, The Mandoon Estate. We got going on time with Chris and I take a sedate lead through Midland until we hit the back roads. The route took us into the hills via Toodyay Road to O’Brien Road, doing a loop that comes back onto Toodyay Road again. Chris slowed to wait for other members to catch up but only Gerry Willems seemed in the mood to keep up, so we stopped for a while to await the arrive of others before proceeding. Heading back to Midland we took a left into Mayo Road and some very picturesque, country roads. We headed through Chidlow, Mt Helena, Stoneville and Parkerville, passing all four of their pubs along the way. Perhaps a future pub crawl in the making? We arrived at the Mandoon Estate earlier than the allotted time that Google Maps said we would. Funny that. Everyone ordered quickly, the meals arrived swiftly and we all enjoyed their brews and vino. As the sun set, the evening continued to be pleasantly warm and we enjoyed each other’s company. Thanks to all who attended what was a wonderful evening of Porsches, Pub, Grub and Grog!

Barry’s Pizza Run

It was a very warm afternoon (read: stinkin’ hot) when members arrived for the first of our afternoon “micro” runs. So in the late afternoon the cavalcade heading east with airconditioning turned to maximum. A good turnout of varying Porsche cars enjoyed an interesting drive from city to the hills including 100% of the PCWA’s inventory of Yellow Boxsters! Once out of the city the cars could stretch their legs and our route took us along some stunning hilltop scenery including the (one way) zig zags which is by no means a “highway speeds” road as it teeters on the edge of some very sheer cliffs and valleys. The group then had a meal of gourmet pizza including some superb dessert pizza on Great Eastern Hwy at Little Ceasers in Mundaring. All in all it was a nice little event and thanks to all who attended. This idea of small social drives was well received and we will definitely be having more afternoon (and also early morning) “micro” runs in 2015. See you all out there! Edward Roose

356 Corner

G’day. I’m Marc Sherriff. PCWA member, and state secretary for the Porsche 356 Register of Australia. The latter being the reason I have been asked to start a regular feature in our magazine, focussing on 356’s and anything associated with them. After doing some brain storming about what this feature will be about in particular, with fellow 356 enthusiasts, and other members, there were a couple of topics that continued to rise to the fore. I, or another 356 enthusiast, will address these in the issues to come. 356 History. Most Porsche enthusiasts have some familiarity with the 356 shape. It’s clear in the car’s profile that Porsche evolved the shape to become the 911 from the roots the 356 established way back in 1948. The 356 was the first road production model for the brand, and in the eyes of many (myself included), the purist form of the brand’s road going cars. The 356 was created by Ferry Porsche, the great Dr’s son. The shape was penned by Erwin Komenda, the inhouse designer. The first production cars were actually made in Austria, on a farm in Gmund. Over the first two years, about 50 cars were made, all hand hammered out of aluminium. The drive train, and suspension were essentially moved across from the VW beetle of the day. The cars were very light, and nimble in their handling, and were a very rewarding car to drive in their day. There are very few left around the world, and their value when they do come on the market is several lottery wins. It was the move to Zuffenhausen, Germany, and changing the manufacturing process at all levels that really made the model take off. The cars were now manufactured by the coach builder next door to the new factory, and made of steel. A new pushrod engine was developed specifically for the Porsche, still based on the air cooled flat 4 configuration. This was also made, and assembled in house. These first German made cars are easily identified by their windscreen(s). 1948-53 had split windscreens, with a pillar down the centre, and 1953-55 they had a creased windscreen, which was bent in the middle, like a v shape from a WW2 fighter plane. These early cars are referred to as “Pre-A’s”. The next evolution of the car occurred in late 1955, with the introduction of the 356A. This was a big leap forward in technology for the cars. It got a curved windscreen, and for many 356 fans, the prettiest of the bodies. It is this model that is the most replicated. This body is referred to as the Type 1, or T1 amongst enthusiasts. Production continued through to late 1959, with a slight revision mid ’57 for the T2 body. It was late ’59 that saw the introduction of the 356B. A new T5 body shape (I need to research what happened to the T3 & T4), but clearly an evolution, not a revolution. The new shape was more aerodynamic. However, it takes an enthusiast to pick the difference most of the time. Mid ’62 saw the new T6 body arrive. This one did have a few cues to pick it out to the average Porsche fan. The rear hood now had 2 grilles, instead of 1. It also introduced a much larger rear window, to improve rearward visibility. The US delivered cars also moved the fuel filler from inside the front hood, to the right hand front fender, making filling easier. Not the Australian delivered cars though. The leading edge of the front hood is also much squarer, than the rounded previous model. It did not take long for Porsche to realise they needed to try and stop the car as fast as it went. So with pretty much the same T6 body, Porsche fitted disc brakes in 1964. Keep in mind that by this time Porsche had been showing the upcoming 901 (911) at

the various auto shows, so the 356C was considered a great test bed to ensure the new brake system was up to standard. The 356C was kept in production until mid 1966, some two and a half years into the 911 (as it was named by this point) production due to demand, as the 911 replacement, whilst considered more “Civilised”, was also significantly more expensive, and heavier, than the car it was replacing. The final ten 356C cars manufactured went to the Dutch police force, for highway duties. From the car’s inception, it was always available in several body types. The first prototype was actually a mid engine roadster, the spiritual grandfather of the boxster, if you like. It had a ladder chassis, with the body placed on top. All the production cars were of monocoque construction, to reduce weight, and improve rigidity for both roadsters and coupe body types. The most recognisable body type of the range would have to be the “Speedster”. This was built at the request of Max Hoffman, the US agent, as a “Cheaper” option. The irony being that they are amongst the most valuable today. The have a low, removable windscreen. This was for the weekend racers that wanted the lightest weight option. They had no permanent side windows, or roof. Great summer car, and probably the most replicated car on the planet today. There were more civilised “Rag Tops”. The roadsters, and cabriolets, with wind up windows, taller windscreens, and waterproof(ish) folding tops. Oh yeah, and a semi functional heater. There was a unique body type produced for a very short period of time, called a “Notch back”. This model is best described as a cabriolet, with a welded on steel roof. It was not actually, it was purpose built this way. There is a lovely example in the club, that gets out occasionally. Then there is the coupe. The most popular by numbers manufactured, but probably the least desirable by the purists. At about 800kg, considered a little too heavy to be a “proper” sports car. Over the car’s evolution, there were a number of engine capacities and designs offered, some great ideas, and varying levels of power. These will be covered in a future article. I think that the information above will arm you not to be too shy to approach a 356 owner at the next get together, and discuss their car, and it’s history. Remember the “Newest” 356 you can own will be 50 years old this year, so us owners tend to know a lot about our cars, and we love talking about them. We usually know a lot about our particular car, so please come and chat. Keep the faith. 2.ASA Approved helmet (available at any motorbike or speed shop) 3.Fire extinguisher fitted to your vehicle. Note: No new holes need to be drilled in your car, existing seat bolts are utilised and the frame & bottle can be easily removed when not needed. 4. A therapeutic transition into retirement

I As I approached retirement I wanted to give myself a treat. Something a little fun and exciting to enjoy before I reached my use-by date. In my younger days (and I’m going way back; so far back that not only was the TV in black and white, but so was the radio) I was a bit of a petrol head (and still am). I liked motor racing and remember the days at Caversham, where I would park my FX Holden near the straight and watch the race while sitting on the bonnet. The FX was my first car. I got a floor shift and sports muffler installed, and it did the ¼ mile in about two days. I later had a Cortina 440: 1500cc, fully worked with all the fruit, and that did the ¼ mile in one day. So I cut my time in half.

having a 930 turbo. What a car! I wanted one but was $40 short. As the years rolled on my desire to get a real sports car became obsessive, so I told my darling, understanding (read: long suffering) wife that I wanted one, to which she replied, ‘Yeah right.’ And with her warm-hearted support still ringing in my ears, I set off to look for a sports car. Being a working class guy my piggy bank wasn’t that fat. At that time Toyota had just released the ’86. I liked the look of it and the reviews were quite positive. I was seriously thinking about getting one, but at the same time I was browsing the net to see what else I could get for around the same price. I saw that John Hughes had a yellow Porsche Boxster S for less than the ’86, so I had to have a look at it. I told my wife I was going to have a look at a Porsche and if all was well I might buy it. She said, ‘Oh good, and while you’re at it could you stop over at the art gallery and buy me the Monet that’s for sale?’ With encouragement like that I knew I was on a winner.

A couple of FJ’S later my mates and I got into American cars and I got a ’59 Chevy Belair. Wish I still had it. I remember at one time changing my mind from buying an XY GT Falcon and instead getting a V8 Charger. Boy, did I get that wrong! But I’d never had a proper sports car or a convertible. I recall my brother’s mate

l liked the Boxster and it checked out fine, but I had to decide: Porsche or Toyota? (Who am I kidding?!) The Boxster’s road handling was amazing compared to other cars I’d owned, plus it was a convertible and I loved the colour. Now I just needed to find a mechanic to service it as my local guy wasn’t Porsche savvy. I was

recommended to Richard James. Some say, if he is cut, he bleeds Porsches. He is23/09/10 a Porsche guru and suggested I join the Porsche club. I phoned the PCWA and spoke to Julie. I asked her if the club consisted mainly of young members or if they had any old farts like me. She said the age of the members varied, but that most members were ‘mature aged.’ I supposed that was her polite way of telling me that old farts were welcome. After joining the PCWA I thought I might have a go at the track as I’d never done that before. Well, it was great fun; even being slow as a wounded snail it was still exciting. The guys at the club are top shelf and I look forward to the cruises and track days. I recommend members have a go at the sporting series; it’s a great way of letting your hair down and giving your Porsche a fast workout without getting a speeding ticket. It’s a fantastic feeling, letting your Porsche rip and rev to the limit … And it’s a lot safer than trying it on a public road. By the way, my wife likes the Boxster and we often go out early Sunday mornings for drives along the beach and stop off for breakfast anywhere from Hillarys to Mandurah. The top down and the fresh morning breeze give you an appetite for a hearty breakfast. Love the little Boxster. It was the ultimate therapeutic transition into retirement. Cheers Alex
