PRESIDENTS PROSE
First order of the day. MEMBERSHIP CARDS. These were printed and found to have a printing error just before sending out. The cards had to be redone so instead of it taking 2-3 weeks it has taken over 6. I cannot apologise enough however it has been out of our control. I will send the cards out as soon as I receive them from the printer and add our details. One year down, a lot of hard work by all the committee and I am so grateful to have such a wonderful bunch helping me through many things, giving support when my brain isn’t quite fully functioning, having loads of laughs but still keeping everything running professionally. It has been a trying year with a few changes within the committee as members resigned and we searched to fill the places vacated. We were so lucky to get young Wagner on board and to have Eckhard happy to move into the treasurers roll vacated by Phil. I would also like to thank Ross for stepping up and taking on the arduous task of membership, it has been a handful!! Greg has continued his marvellous, outstanding efforts in the social chair with vigour and flair as usual. Bill as Vice President has been helping along the way with different things though as he says it’s a great position doing nothing!! Looking after the ICC roll is actually a fairly big task so it does keep him busy. Jeff is a magician at the web and fixing all the little gremlins that come along. He is nothing but amazing with nothing too hard to sort, I love it. Cameron Alan did a valiant job as our Merchandising person as well as providing lots of statistical data for us to work with. Peter has learnt a lot over this year and hopefully with his new machinery he can pump out the magazine in a speedy, glamorous and professional form. If only we got our articles to him on time!! Might add it is my fault this month!! Motorsport is improving and numbers are increasing so Kevin is obviously doing something right, he worries like it was a child to him, you couldn’t ask for better. I am going to teach him meditation and get into yoga so he doesn’t panic about everything falling apart because no one enters an event until the last minute!! It would be nice to see things happen a little earlier for him so I don’t have to chat a dozen times a day leading up to the event so boys try entering just a smidge earlier than the last 2 days. I would love to see our numbers back up to the 50 and 60 marks, and we are getting there. The lunches; and the camaraderie that is coming back make the days so much more fun. After all that is what we are out there for, enjoying the car the way it was made to be driven with like minded souls. As for me I have not fulfilled a couple of things I wanted this year, the MKR event got lost in the system somewhere and I was trying to sort a weekend away with social and competition combined but that also has only gone so far, positively I might add, but time has beaten me. If there is interest I will make sure these things happen this year, my health has let me down a fair bit 6

this year but they are on top of things so I will be speedy very soon!!. Thank you to all members who came to the AGM and had a say about the changes to the constitution, I felt like everyone was comfortable in being a part of discussions and the results were what everyone was happy with. A special thanks also to our life member, Peter Hayes for stepping in to chair the meeting while the old committee stood down. Thank you all for accepting the committee back as a whole for the next year and we will endeavour to do the best we can for the members with their best interests at heart. For those who would like to have “live streaming” of the club nights I have finally found someone to help me with this also. This will be up and running this year once I get what is needed. It will help our communications between South East QLD and North QLD members also. So onto this coming 12 months, we have the Club Concours coming up soon, registration is on the webpage under the flyer in the events section, we need you to register so I know what types of cars are coming. You do not have to have a spotless pristine car, this is an event to show off our cars, have a great social day with a little friendly competition. Of course if you wish to go the whole way and prep immaculately we would love that also, come along to the Sept club night for a presentation on this. Everything from race cars to 356, new model Macan and Cayenne, all R and RS models, with everything in between. Lakeside DTC which is a lot of fun and Morgan Park sprint. The Christmas dinner and awards night will be at Mooloolaba Surf Club Function Rooms, spectacular room, view and food so don’t miss out on this one either on 9th December. Lots of special awards this year! Well, enough from me, thank you all again for the support and the continuing growth in all our events and club nights. Thank you also to Porsche Centre Brisbane and Porsche Centre Gold Coast for hosting our club nights and providing such wonderful support for the club and all its members. To our advertisers this year a big thank you to you also, without you we would not be able to produce such a wonderful magazine for our members and others. And to our sponsors Dan Bowden and Bowdens Own Products, Phil Ross of Shannons Insurance, Antony Van Der Drift and Goetzinger Smallgoods, Sven Koremans and BP Service Centre Warwick. Please if you have a chance to support these people and companies or the Porsche Centres for buying and servicing it would be great to give back. I look forward to seeing you all at an event some time soon. If there is something you would like to see done or do something we haven’t organised please let us know we are always open to new ideas. Til next time Bis bald, und genießen Sie Ihren Porsche
MOTORSPORT ANNUAL REPORT - 2016/2017 Instead of Motorsport News, in this edition of our magazine, I have included the Annual Report that I presented at the AGM. It has now been my privilege to have serviced the club in 2016/2017. I am honoured to be your 10th Motorsport Director and for those that know me, I am big on the past. So, with that in mind, I would like to recognise the club Motorsport Directors that have preceded me: Brett Wentworth Darren Dunn John Gilmore Bill Black Jay McCormack James Austin John Gill Richard Walker Ian Gall Also, it would be remiss of me to not recognise two caretaker Motorsport Directors, Grant Sparks and David Beard. I would also like to recognise the Motorsport Committee: Lee Cooper Bill Black Eckhard Schwarting Greg Turnham Brett Wentworth Kent Kieseker Simon Cilento Motorsport is very much in the re-building phase and primary focus this year is to have been cost neutral and then attract members to motorsport and facilitating of this process.
Early in 2017, we had an introduction to motorsport meeting held at Porsche Centre Brisbane, which was attended by 14 interested members. Out of the 57 participants in the current Club Championship, 8 of those members are new to motorsport. In 2016, after the Motorsport Forum, the decision was had to refine the Benchmark Scoring System so that each car had its own Benchmark as opposed to the previous system which saw car being bunched to a P/W range. The new system is much fair and a lot less weighted to the cars with a better power to weight ratio. In 2017, we took another step in improving the competition by recognising that car should be competing against similar cars, not similar P/W. We now have Car Categories instead of Car Classes. The calendar for 2017 will see us complete 4 Non-Sprint Events and 6 Sprint Events. Although too early to decide, we may look at adding an extra event to the 2018 Calendar. From a Club perspective, the interaction between the Social Group and Motorsport this year has been great, particularly at the Morgan Park Event which saw the social group do some track time and then head back to Toowoomba for the Christmas in July. I would like to recognise the great work of Greg McWhinney in making this interaction possible. With respect to our finances; 2016/2017 has a $6,000 shortfall but this is as a result of an event occurring in June (last year) but not paying for it until July (this year). If the payment in question is accrued, then the 2016/2017 is a break-even year. A budget has been submitted for the 2018 calendar year and in summary: Projected Income $42,000.00 Forecast Expenses $38,500.00 Capital Outlay (computer) $2,500.00 P & L Assessment $1,000.00 Finally, PCQ Motorsport wishes to thank its sponsors, Shannon’s Insurance and Steve Cooper & Associates. Kip McIntyre's Day Off As I lay in bed that 3rd of July watching my girl Wagner get ready for work, I felt exactly like Ferris Bueller. It's not every day you can "call in sick" to go spend a morning driving race cars with Jim Richards – but that's precisely what I was about to do. *cough* *cough* "Bye honey, have a nice Monday in the office, sucks to be you". *cough* *cough* She looked at me with contempt. She slammed the front door. I'm pretty sure I heard Katrina & The Waves "Walking On Sunshine" blasting from the heavens as I showered and dressed and slicked back my hair. What? Are you serious? It's even a good hair day? I looked good. Driving to the racetrack in my girlfriends Porsche with the radio up and the windows down, I was still channelling Bueller. I could see the poor bastards in the cars around me, with their sour Monday faces. They were worrying about finishing that spreadsheet for 'Andy' in 'Accounts' or rehearsing excuses to get out of 'Jan from Level 10's' Farewell Morning Tea. I don't even know Jan, but she's probably gluten intolerant – her morning tea will definitely suck. I on the other hand was cruising down that highway in the opposite direction (literally and figuratively)..... towards a brand new GT3 RS and a racetrack all to myself. I was the first to arrive at Queensland Raceway and was greeted warmly by Jim Richards himself. You know Jim? 'Jim of 7 Bathurst Wins and 8 Targa Tasmania Wins' Jim. He's a legend for sure, and now that I was meeting him in the flesh, even the butterflies in my stomach were nervous! It was the "Shannons Drive day with Jim Richards" – a raffle prize from Shannons Insurance and Phillip Ross won by four lucky PCQ members. But suddenly I wasn't feeling so cool. An hour earlier on the highway the narrator in my head was telling me I was like Fonzie. Now it was telling me to sit down. To take some deep breaths. Even my ears had started to sweat. I had never been in a race car like that before. And as I watched each participant emerge from Jim's car, jelly legged and white knuckled... the nerves, noise and excitement went to my head. I started feeling like Bueller again...but not smug Bueller anymore....now I felt like Bueller during that crazed sprint when he's trying to beat his parents home before they find out he stole a Ferrari and wagged school. Oh man... I was actually shaking. The other PCQ participants took their laps one by one. They were Tim Vo, Tony D'Andrea and Justin Baldwin. They each smiled bigly as they exited the car... I tried to interpret their smiles. Was it exhilaration or was it terror? My turn arrived. The GT3 RS was right there. Jim was in the drivers seat and I was suited up ready to go. The GT3 was actually Jim's own car, the same car he raced in the 2017 Targa Tasmania. It wasn't the bear bones, jungle gym of steel and fibre glass race car that I'd expected. It was perfectly sophisticated. It was climate 8

controlled, noise reduced, latest stereo sound system comfort. Apart from the front half roll cage, the interior was perfectly standard. I wasn't sure whether to be pleased or disappointed! Rolling through the pit lane I checked and double checked my helmet strap. Jim immediately floored it towards Turn One. One turn down. Still alive. Then Turn Two. Executed perfectly, still alive. Flying down the back straight, I look over at our speed. 220km/h just before he jumps on the brakes and drops a few gears tipping into Turn Three. I'm thoroughly surprised. There's no tough suspension, no obnoxious noise, no jerky gearchanges, no wresting around corners. We could have been listening to Chopin. The feeling was surreal. We were coming from 220 into a hair pin and there was only calm, smooth, precisely executed gear changes. Jim cuts in tight on Turn Four, hitting the ripple strip and I brace expecting a kidney bashing, but instead, nothing but smooth control, confidence and comfort. Racing with Jim, whilst exhilarating, felt thoroughly civilised. I would see the landscape passing at dizzying speeds, but my other senses were telling me to relax and enjoy. Jim even held a conversation with me as we drove. Which won him even more cool points. As we left the track he asked about my impressions. I told him it was hard to believe how smooth it could feel to travel so quickly. Jim said its definitly the best car he's ever raced – and to think it's the exact same car you can walk into a Porsche Centre and buy for yourself. It was such a fun morning. Jim had morning tea with us and told us about his eventful career, starting from when he was just 11 years old, and including his first prize money of $220. He was generous with his time and a gentleman too. We also had the pleasure to meet Badri, a Porsche Club Malaysia member, on holidays in Brisbane, who'd booked the event for himself many months previously. He told us about driving only Macan's and Cayenne Turbo's owing to the poor road conditions where he lived. So I'm sure Jim's GT3 would have made it an Australian holiday to remember. The event over, feeling elated, I drove Wagner's Cayman S home. It wasn't a 2017 GT3 RS or Beullers friends dad's Ferrari 250GT....but I still felt like a very lucky guy. (*cough* *cough* All I had to do now was get a doctors certificate before work tomorrow..... ) Many thanks to Shannons Insurance and Phillip Ross – Business Development Manager (QLD).
'Ferdie' - a 2001 model 986 S
Well that's my name for him. A tribute to you know who Unfortunately, he is a sick puppy right now. After the last car club outing to Brushgrove, I discovered oil in the radiator coolant, which is not a good look. So, after checking with club supporters/workshops, I transported him to a recommended specialist and club member in Brisbane, DHM. After checking several mechanical possibilities, they discovered a cracked cylinder head on 4 to 6 due to an overheating in a past ownership. This is where you get to experience Porsche Tax. The cost of replacements is substantial to say the least and involves me saving my pension allowance for the next 10 years at least, providing I live that long. At present, we are investigating having the head repaired and/or replace the motor with a second hand unit from a donor car. Not a cheap excercise either. So, that's where we're at right now, so if any members have an alternative, I would love to hear about it, particularly if it"s cost effective. Cheers, Don
LETTERS I thought I would share what I thought was an interesting story regarding the history of my 3.2 Carrera which I took delivery of new in 1984. At the time I took delivery, the new price was $64,000. At that time, I lived in the regional city of Bendigo in the state of Victoria. I had a 3 year old son and a 12 month old daughter, and after owning the car for 2 years my wife convinced me that the Porsche was not a practical family car, (not sure why!) so I sold it and purchased a new BMW 535M, temporarily putting an end to Porsche ownership. In 1990 I relocated to Adelaide in South Australia, as a result of expanding my business. Whilst living in Adelaide in 1992, I was driving through a suburban street when I noticed a "Hell Bronze" Porsche parked on the side of the road. I promptly said to my wife who was with me at the time, "that it was my old Porsche' to which she replied, I'm sure there were more of those than just yours. As I disagreed, I promptly parked and located the owner of the car who was willing to share the history, and viewed the original owner details from the hand book, and yes it was the Porsche I purchased new in 1984. In 1993 I relocated my family (again to expand my business) from Adelaide to Brisbane. In 2007, I purchased a "Unique cars" magazine. On the back cover I noticed a Porsche for sale and I promptly again suggested to my wife "that it was my old Porsche". I rang the dealer in Melbourne to see if the vehicle had the original books with it. The dealer assured me it had all books with full service history. I asked him to identify the original owner and sure enough, it was my car. I then flew to Melbourne to inspect the vehicle and promptly purchased it for the second time after 23 years. Although I purchased the car new in Melbourne in 1984, it was originally supplied to Albion car Centre in Brisbane. The Carrera now sits in my garage beside my collection. The only change I have made is the removal of the original "telephone dial" wheels replacing them with the Fuchs as seen in the attached photos. It will not be seen again under the previous circumstances, remaining where it belongs to be enjoyed and passed on to my son. Barry Jarred

Social Motorsport Drive & Christmas in July Party We were greeted with a fresh & beautiful clear sky morning for our social drive to Warwick for lunch, then onto Morgan park to meet up with the Motorsport ‘boy’s & girls’. Club magazine editor Peter & Kath (928) along with Grant & LeaAnne (996), Anthony & Orr (991), Bill & Nora (964), Ian & Pauline (Boxster), Matt (996), & new members Eddie & Denise (Cayman S) & ourselves (911 SC) made for a nice little traveling group. After some had grabbed a quick coffee from McDonalds we hit the road – our drive to Warwick took us along the Ipswich- Boonah Road onto Boonah – then across to Aratula – up Cunningham’s Cap & once across the range a left turn onto Freeman’s Road which runs east of the Cunningham Highway through the small village of Freeman, then pass the turn off to Queen Mary Falls, through some pretty farming country and the road brings you into Warwick near Scots Boarding school. We had lunch at the Horse & Jockey pub – our cars made for a great sight parked up, Peter said that having a 928 amongst the group set the standard. After a great lunch, the ladies decided to walk into the CBD to take-in the sights & sounds of “Jumps & Jazz in July” while us ‘lads’ went out to Morgan Park to takein the sights & sounds of the race track. After arriving it was a matter of introducing my small band of ‘social’ lads to the motorsport lads – for some of the social group it was their first time at Morgan Park, this was followed by filling out paperwork for the ‘Happy Laps’. Due to the hard work of our Motorsport director Kevin V, passenger rides & “Happy Laps” were arranged with CAMS 10
which some of us took advantage of. I was able to get a passenger ride with Steve Cooper in his GT-2 race car at “80%” limit which was an absolute blast, again due the hard work put in by Kevin V with CAMS, PCQ was able to arrange
Passenger Rider Alan Ereaut with Mike Miller at the wheel ‘Happy Laps” which is the opportunity to drive the race track at a moderate speed without helmets & CAMS licence, so with this privilege available, I then lead all seven social ‘lads’ around Morgan Park. For some it was their first time on a race track, I lead at a slightly spirited pace, which allowed us to have fun & after our five laps – and with all drivers back in the pits with large smiles on their faces it’s easy to see why it’s called ‘happy laps’. All the lads really enjoyed the experience & a couple asked how to get more involved with the motorsport side of the club. After this some of us helped pack up some of the club’s BB-Q stuff into Lee’s Toyota, we headed back into town to meet up with our wife’s & continue our social drive onto Toowoomba to meet up with the other’s from the club for our ‘Christmas in July Party’ at the Ambassador Motel. Our host at the Ambassador Motel made everyone very welcome, after a quick

freshen up we all met up in Seasons Restuarant & the Christmas dinner was a superb. We were seated across two tables, 37 members were greeted by a buffet of seafood – lamb – chicken – turkey – roast vegies & salads; this was followed by a very healthy desert table of pavlova – small individual Christmas puddings – profiteroles – whipped cream – warm custard & a bowl of fresh fruit. A lot of laughs & stories were shared around both tables as the photos show. Some of us met the following morning at the Coffee Club in the CBD of Toowoomba for breakfast, and after a hearty breakfast & couple hours of laughs & sharing stories we headed home. I’d like to thanks everyone who attended the social drive, the 928 ‘boy’s’ who arranged for their wives to head to Toowoomba for a day of shopping while the ‘lads’ made a trip out to Morgan Park. They drove as a group onto Toowoomba for the Christmas in July party. I’d like to thank Kevin & Karen, Henry & Kimberly & Stan & Jill after racing Morgan Park then travelled across to Toowoomba to attended the ‘Christmas in July’ party, and to all the social boys & girls who also travelled to Toowoomba, you all made it a great night out. Remember to keep an eye out on the PCQ Social calendar for the next event. Happy Porscheing Greg McWhinney Social Director.

Cars & Coffee Gold Coast
Many of you may not know about Cars & Coffee Gold Coast held on the 3rd Saturday of Each month at 238, Mudgeeraba Road, Mudgeeraba. Cars & Coffee Gold Coast has been running for the past 20 months and it has certainly grown from strength to strength. We had our last meet on 15th July 2017 and well, what a stunning meet the July Cars & Coffee Gold Coast was. We had a bumper crowd of 120 cars and having such a great number means that we had a fine representation of motor vehicles from all eras, genres, makes, models, from luxury to workhorse, from early veteran to modern supercars, from daily commuters to Nurburgring record breakers and all in between. Out of the many fine automobiles, the car of the meet went to a 1938 Ford Bucket Rat Rod. So unique was this vehicle, so outstanding was this vehicle that one couldn’t miss it in the crowd. It had acres of rust, each and every body panel was differing in colour, it had no ROOF! But it certainly had loads of character. Porsche Centre GC brought down the latest itineration of the 911, a 991 Carrera CS. It was absolutely stunning and definitely a car to aspire to own. PCGC also gave out Porsche Merchandise like baseball caps, landyards and posters to many of those present and ti was certainly a big hit for many. Carrying on with the Porsche theme, we had close to 20 Porsche’s come along and out of that were three GT3 RS’s. To see one is a rarity but to see three in the same venue was just sublime. There was a good representation of all Porsche Models from three 944S2’s, several Boxsters, an immaculate 930 Turbo, 996 GT3, 997 TT, 993, and several early 911’s. Unfortunately my 928S4 decided she wanted to sleep in that morning. Adding to the sporting class were the Lamborghini Gallardo, McLaren 570S, Audi R8, Lotus Europa S, BMWM4, Lotus Exige, Nissan GTR’s – of which there were a whole host of and BMW M5. There were three Rolls Royces- two Cloud III a Corniche DHC and a Bentley Continental. They certainly added some regal class to the whole
meet. A whole bunch of VW enthusiasts come along in their modern cars. To add a little classic charm, we had a Land Rover Defender Series 2, Lancia Coupe, Corvette Stingray, Morgan 4, Sunbeam, Austin 7, Vauxhall Velox, Ford Fairlane, Citroen Traction, Holden Monaro GTS, Ford 351GT, Austin Healey Sprite, Alfa Romeo GTV and Lotus Elan. Two 1964 Chevrolet Impala’s, a coupe and a saloon brought some extra talent to the show. They were fitted with air bag suspension and they promptly performed some incredible feats for the crowd and the coupe eventually ended up with its right front wheel 5 feet in the air. It was a sight to behold. Eventually another Impala joined in and completed a “low rider trifecta”. Gold Coast Car Show also supported the meet by giving out 10 double passes to the show on 12th August 2017. As mentioned in the introduction, we had a fantastic array of vehicles including two Royal Enfield bikes and it certainly rounded off the meet wonderfully. Lets hope the next meet is just as brilliant and look forward to seeing many of you there on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Navigation Run "Bill Black had managed to get 4 PCQ teams together two 911's, one 928 & one 968 represented PCQ for the ICC NavRun, we all agreed before starting out, we'd read the instructions & drive our own event & not follow each other & avoid getting lost together, we all wanted our own stories to tell. Kent Kieseker & I made up a team in his 911-SC which according to the event organisers run sheet became 'Car-10'. We had four A-3 size maps to work out directions & questions, you had to work out where you 'left' one map & 'joined' the next map – questions were based on land marks – local signage, other observation markers & you had 5 – 6 hours to complete the course. The organisers advised if you got all the instructions correct you should be at the end point about 2.00 PM & the event 'closed' at 4.00pm as this was when 'The barn' café closed business for the day. Once Kent & I worked out the start & finish points to each section & which roads we believed we needed to take we set out following instructions & answering questions along the way. As we answer a question, we'd stop recheck directions the next set of questions & set off again; it worked pretty well as we only had a couple of 'missed' turn offs which required some back tracking finding the answer to the questions & we were on our way again. At one point we stopped and had our club treasurer (Eckhard Schwarting – 911 Carrera) pull up beside us at the end of a way-point & ask 'if we'd seen the park with balls yet' we had both missed the turn off on the map – we went our own way each eventually finding the 'balls' named the park & were back on track.
We got to travel from Yamanto – Warrill View – Rosevale – Rosewood – Marberg – Ladley – Gatton ending our adventure drive in the foothills of Toowoomba at 'The Barn' café at the back of Helidon. Kent & I agreed some of these roads would make for a great picnic drive day for PCQ in the future – with some spirited driving, we happen to be the first of the PCQ team to arrive at "The Barn" just after 2.00pm, we were followed by Eckhard & his son John about 15 minutes later, Bill Black & Mike Miller in Mikes 928 were about 40 minutes behind us & Allan Castledine & his friend in the 968 arrived after 3.00pm. We had a couple from the BMW club (M-4 Coupe) advised us that after a couple of hours of driving getting 'lost' & had trouble finding answers to questions, decided to give up the contest – goggle mapped "The Barn" & drove straight to the end point. We all agreed it was challenging & you had to keep your wits about you as is was 'easy to 'fall of the map' & get lost – the instructions were 'trust the map' which is what Kent & I kept telling our selves – we'd find an answer & say ' trust the map' & go onto find the next answer & it was fun. After a 'late' lunch of hamburgers & a soft drink Kent & I 'hit the road' we made our way back into Helidon to head back to Brisbane. Our hearts went out to a team from the MG car club in a beautiful MGTG which were part of the event, we saw them driving on the grass verge down the wrong side of the road in Helidon trying to find which way to get to "The Barn" café, they were so far 'lost' we left them to it. Porsche Cars Australia to issue voluntary recall campaign In agreement with the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA), Porsche AG will recall around 21,500 Cayenne model 3.0-litre V6 Diesel vehicles in Europe to update the software in the engine control unit. In Australia, a total of about 2,100 Cayenne model 3.0-litre V6 Diesel vehicles built from August 22 2014 to July 27 2017 are affected. Some further 165 or so vehicles pending delivery to Australian customers are also affected, and delivery of these vehicles will therefore be delayed. Subject to approval of the proposed technical software update by the relevant authorities, the recall is expected to commence in Europe in the European autumn 2017, with an Australian voluntary recall to follow as soon as possible thereafter. PCA will take a responsible approach towards its customers. It is of great importance to PCA that customer expectations regarding quality, integrity and service are met to the fullest extent. All affected vehicles remain safe to drive and may continue to be driven as normal. When the proposed technical software update is available, all owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by their official Porsche Centre to arrange the free software update, which should take around one hour. PCA will work constructively with the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development and all other relevant parties to implement the voluntary software update. PCA will provide further information as it becomes available.

Only 70 km - As The Crow Flies Inter Club Challenge Round 4 Navigation Run by Bill Black Starting at the Yamanto Shopping Centre and finishing at “The Barn and Scotty’s Garage”, south west of Helidon, that’s about 70 kilometres away in a straight line. According to route mapped out by Laurie Garth from Northern Districts Sporting Car Club, we had a drive of about 200 km. I know Mike and I covered a bit more than that due to a few wrong turns, a few over shoots and some back tracking searching for answers to the 40 questions. Being a round of the ICC we were hoping for a good roll up and it looked like we have 7 cars entered. Due to illness, mechanical issues and a family bereavement we were down to 4 cars, just enough to make up a full Porsche Club team. At sign- on we paid the very affordable entry fee of only $35 per car and were issued with some maps and some instructions. The first task was to take time and carefully plot the route on the map before setting off, so that once under way full concentration could be given to navigation and answering the questions. It soon became clear that very little driving would be on the highways, instead tar sealed back roads through farming areas and the bush were the order of the day. We went through or near, Purga, Mutdapilly, Warrill View, Coleyville, Mt Walker, Rosewood, Haigslea, Marburg, Minden, Hatton Vale, Plainlands, Forest Hill, Gatton, Tenthill, Ma Ma Creek, Lilydale, Helidon, Iredale, Blanchview and finally Flagstone Creek. Sounds a bit like the words for another Lucky Starr song. Great driving roads but too much attention was needed for answering the questions to really enjoy the drive or the scenery. Some of the questions were fairly simple, like “name the Pony Club?” Being a Sunday and you round a bend to see a paddock full of horse floats and about 50 horses with young girls doing dressage, bounce pony, barrels and show jumping. Pretty obvious it was a pony club, and probably the right pony club, provided you were on the right road. Some questions were a bit more tricky, such as, “what is the total distances to the towns shown on the sign posts at a major intersection?” Looks simple, but one of the signs also had the kilometres written on the back of the sign, seen only by the cows in the paddock, unless you got out of the car and walked around the back for a closer look. Kent and Greg had competed in an ICC Nav Run before, but for the rest of us, it was our first attempt. Considering the winning pair from the MG Car Club scored only 420 points, all our members did remarkably well. Our results on the opposit page were good enough for PCQ to win the event and add 20 points to our 2017 ICC tally. MGCC came second, BMW and HSCC tied for third and host club NDSCC 4th due to a DNS when unfortunately one of their team broke a clutch cable on the way to the start. This has stretched our lead further and after 5 rounds we have PCQ on 93 points, BMW 74, dropping back to third is Lotus on 70 points with HSCC a close fourth on 69 and MG on 55 points. Full ICC 16

results are updated after each event and are on the Club website. Greg said they saw another competitor in an MG TD looking like they were lost going the wrong way in Helidon. They did finish, completed the whole run and scored 320 points, not bad for a car built in 1951. Driver of the TD, Don said their main aim was to finish before sunset, obviously wary of the MG’s Lucas electrics. Allan thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back next year better prepared and knowing what to expect after learning a lot from this year’s run. Eckhard and John both said the father-son relationship was all very harmonious and with typical youthful enthusiasm John expected to win first time out. Mike was pleased to be the driver and not the navigator. I can’t disagree with that comment and all agreed that the navigation and questions were far more challenging than the driving. I would like to thank Mike for the opportunity to occupy the passenger seat of his 928. The location for the finish chosen by Laurie was a perfect choice for a car club event with coffee and food from The Barn while Scotty’s Garage is a museum with an amazing collection of all things automotive from a bygone era. Immaculate motorcycles include a 1938 Matchless 350 single,’48 Indian Chief and once used by the PMG for delivering mail a 1963 BSA were all hard to fault. Amongst the array of motoring memorabilia was an amazing collection of early petrol bowsers. Parked outside with weathered patina could be found a 1923 Dodge, a 1927 Whippet and a ‘39 Chev, all of which started life as sedans but ended up being converted to utes. It is not until you have done an event like this that you appreciate the amount of work needed in setting out the route, preparing the instructions, maps and questions as well as checking the answers and allocating points. A big thank you must go to Laurie Garth and his helpers from the NDSCC. Great fun and an ideal event for the family to be involved and enough of a challenge for those wishing to take the competition side seriously. A chance for any Porsche Club member, in any road registered Porsche to represent the club. It might have been only 70 km as the crow flies, but for some of us it was still a five hour trip.

turbo…. Why don’t you just get a 944, it’s a much better car and those turbos are so complicated!” After 19 years of ownership I’m beginning to think this person may have had a point. However when has logic ever applied to Porsche ownership? If you are like the many people who come and speak to me while I’m refuelling my 924 turbo, you may not know that much about this particular Porsche model. In a nutshell, way back in the 1970s, VW/ Audi asked Porsche to design a sports car for them. Porsche agreed, and designed the 924, with the body designed by Harm Lagaay who went on to design the 993, 968 and 996 models. During the end of the design process the 1970s oil crisis hit and VW/Audi decided that perhaps a sports car wasn’t the best idea after all. Thankfully Porsche thought the 924 was worth saving and so purchased their design from VW/ Audi and went ahead and released the 924 in 1976. The 924 was a huge sales hit and was the first ‘modern’ Porsche as defined by the use of water cooling, sharing of key components with other mainstream (VW) cars and employing modern construction techniques. Compared to the contemporary 911, the driving position of the 924 is a revelation with none of the idiosynchronies that made the 911 so dated then. If the engine location is ignored, one could easily argue that modern 911s share more with the 924 than they share with the 911SC. With 125 horsepower (bhp), the 924 wasn’t exactly the most powerful production car in existence, and in a similar vein to modern Caymans and Boxsters, the motoring journalists at the time suggested the 924 could do with more power. In 1979 Porsche rose to this challenge and released the 924 turbo which ultimately produced 177 bhp. This compared favourably to the similar era 911SC which produced 204 bhp. Legend has it that Porsche specifically designed the head of the 924 turbo with a flow restriction to ensure it would not be more powerful than the 911 of the same era. The sport car reviewers at the time reacted to the performance of the 924 turbo positively, and for a short while the 924 turbo was the ‘must have’ Porsche. This reign only lasted for a few precious months due to both the high cost of the 924 turbo (listed at the same price as a base 911SC), and to reliability issues associated with the failure of the turbo following poor shut down practices. The 944 replaced the 924 in 1982 and utilised a Porsche designed
The 924 Turbo Enthusiast Wayne Mcauliffe The Porsche church encompasses a broad range of enthusiasts, all of which have a burning passion for the Porsche marque. For some Porsche enthusiasts it is all about having the best sports car that money can buy, and when one considers Porsche’s latest offerings, these enthusiasts have certainly picked the right horse. Another well represented enthusiast type at any Porsche event are those who adore the classic air cooled 911 range. Whether it be a long hood, G series or the final 964/ 993 variants, these Porsches are as celebrated today as when they were released over 25 years ago. A less common, yet no less passionate group of enthusiasts are those who hanker for the front engine Porsches of the late 70s to early 90s. This group encompasses the 928 owners who must all live near the sea due to their incessant chatter about sharks; the busy 968 owners who are either explaining their car isn’t a 928, or explaining their car isn’t a 944; and the 944 owners who are just relieved they aren’t 924 owners. Yes, those 924 owners, a very rare breed of Porsche enthusiast, are often forgotten as their Porsches are yet to be perceived as classics, they’re just old Porsches. Within this tiny subset of Porsche enthusiasts there is yet another miniscule group, enthusiasts who know that most of the Porsche parts they are chasing are listed at the impossible price of $NLA … this tiny group of enthusiasts are known as owners of the Porsche 924 turbo. My experience when purchasing my 924 turbo way back in 1999 explains the dilemma faced by any prospective 924 turbo owner. On announcing my intention to purchase my pride and joy, a fellow car enthusiast looked at me blankly and said “A 924

engine and flared arcing made famous by the 924 Carrera GT. Owning a 924 turbo in 2017 requires a degree of commitment that is not required with a similar era 911. Sourcing parts and mechanics for 911s is child’s play compared to the intricate internet searching required by a 924 enthusiast. With an estimated 250 right hand drive examples of the 924 turbo left in existence, coupled with the relatively low value of 924s generally, 924 turbos are quickly becoming rarer than rainbow coloured unicorns. Thankfully for those of us who enjoy chasing unicorns, www.924.org provides a huge treasure trove of information on the 924. My most recent 924 development opportunity commenced in late in 2015 when somebody offered to purchase my 924 turbo. As I considered the offer I found myself creating a list of the items I needed to sort out before selling, and then promptly started to rectify issues I’d ignored for too long. Like so many ill-conceived plans, my initial project scope evolved from
freshening up the steering and removing exhaust leaks to an engine out refurbishment. My goal for the engine removal was to determine the source of a clunking noise that was evident when initially starting from stop; to determine the state of a low compression reading on number four piston; and to determine where a large number of my escaped horses had snuck off to. Even though the 924 turbo engine bay resembles a shopping centre car park in the lead up to Christmas, the engine itself is a relatively simple design with a single overhead cam. With this insight I decided to rebuild the engine myself which also gave me the opportunity to remove ‘rebuild an engine’ from my bucket list. The engine strip down provided a number of answers to the various ailments, with a clutch that was operating on limp home mode, a crank rod that resembled a banana, and a fuel control pressure regulator that had been modified by the halving of the internal regulator spring. Considering the way I enjoy driving my turbo at PCQ track days, I’m very impressed that the car so was able to cope with these failures for so long without a major bang. The engine is now back in the car and so far, so good. I’m not quite ready to test my engineering skills at the track however I will take it for a weekend away in the next month or so. The car is more alive than ever and seems to be taunting me to drive harder like any good Porsche should. Enthusiasm for the Porsche brand can cause us to act in ways that any sane person would label ‘irrational’. If you are finding that your enthusiasm is too close to rational for comfort, I suggest that the purchase of a 924 turbo will cure you of that ill. Along the way you’ll get to enjoy driving one of the most exclusive Porsches available today and experience a unique aspect of Porsche ownership.

PCQ Round 5 – 22 July 2017 Sprint – Morgan Park, Warwick. This event is a story of two tales. The first being that it was the 5th round of our competition and the second being that it was also the 4th round of the Interclub Challenge. This article only focuses on the first and our Vice President, Bill Black will cover the ICC event in a separate article. My apologies in advance for any overlaps in our articles.
the Modern 911 Class was David Palmer in his 996 GT3 with a 1:26.225 and Henry Sinclair in the Mid-Engine Class driving a GT4, recorded a 1:26.689.
The first Morgan Park event at the start of the year was rescheduled to this September, so there was a lot of excitement built up in anticipation of this event. The truth is, it almost didn’t happen. At around 5pm of the Friday before the event, Bill Black received a text (not a phone call) from the company that we engaged to provide the on-track medic; they advised that they were unable to provide a medic for the day. There was a little bit of panic (mainly from me) as we went on the hunt for a medic. Under our CAMS permit, the event could not have gone ahead without a sanctioned medic. It wasn’t until almost 9pm on Friday before we knew that we had secured the service of the QAS from Toowoomba. I would like to acknowledge two men that were our “Plan B”. Drs Michael Treffene and Mike Jones. Both had offered to act as the track medic, in doing so, it would have dramatically impacted on their enjoyment of the day, but both were prepared to carry out this duty so that our event could proceed. Thankfully it was not necessary.
For the afternoon session, we switched to the shorter “E” circuit. This is a particularly good track for the cars with less horse power. Greg Turnham, 911 GT2 (Rep) lit up this session with a very impressive 1:07.140. This time earned Greg 108 points which was top honoured. He had to share the top score with Stan Adler, 911, also on 108 points with a time on 1:10.425. I had the good fortune to be following Stan when he recorded this time, it was a master-class on driving lines.
As I drove into Morgan Park off the Old Stanthorpe Road, I looked down at the temperature on my dash, it read “-2oC”. Oh Yeah, we were in Warwick!! At this point, I want to make everyone a promise – by the next round at Morgan Park, Alana Heffernan and I will have streamlined the document check-in process. Regrettably, on this day, the process was far too slow; to the point where at least 10 competitors had not been registered at the commencement of the driver briefing. It will not happen again. The driver’s briefing commenced, late at 8:45pm. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for orientation laps and the first run group was on track at approx. 9am. The breakdown of the participants was 33 PCQ Members and 40 ICC Club Members. Run groups were divided by speed. Generally, Porsches filled the first two group with a couple of really quick Lotus’. The day was broken up into Long Track (E) in the morning, a break for lunch and the short track (K) in the afternoon. It was widely reported that the new Morgan Park surface was much quicker than the old surface and that most competitors were going a second or two quicker than previous times. The highlights for the morning session where Brett Wentworth in his 911 GT2 (Rep) recording a 1:22.996, the fastest PCQ member on the day. Not far behind was Steve Cooper, also in a 911 GT2 with a 1:23.990. The stand out in 20
PORSCHE NEWS
The lunch break was approx. 12:30pm and a big thank-you to our President, Lee Cooper for organising a great BBQ lunch.
The overall honours for the day went to Bill Black on 106 points. Thankfully, the day was not marred by any major incidents only a minor incident which involved Warwick local, Sven Koremans in his 996 GT3 Cup Car. Hopefully, the damage is only minor. Our defending Champion, Eckhard Schwarting had a day to forget. He was trying out a different set of brakes but they were not up to the standard that Eckhard was used to, so he made the decision to not run in the afternoon session. We wrapped the Sprints up just before 3:30pm which gave us more than enough time for the Passenger Rides and then Happy Laps. Passenger rides required full safety requirements for both driver and passenger. Some drivers opted for more than one passenger which meant they had to pit and change their passenger. This all took a little extra time, we were still well on target for a 5pm close. Once the passenger rides had concluded, we started the Happy Laps, 9 cars and drivers took to the track for a “track experience” before then heading to Toowoomba for the PCQ Christmas in July.

Porsche Club Queensland’s contribution to the Inter Club Challenge is to organize and run a sprint at Morgan Park. This is our second year as hosts of this event, and again it was complete success. There were well over 70 entrants representing seven ICC car clubs with points up for grabs for both the club and individual driver’s championship. For the first time we had drivers from both the Z Car Club and Holden Sporting Car Club joining the regulars from Lotus, BMW,MX5 and the 86 Drivers Club. All had enough drivers to form a club team and get good points towards the competition.
Round 4 Morgan Park Sprint
86 Drivers club whose support goes a long way to making the event a financial success for PCQ.
For many drivers this was their first drive on the newly surfaced track and we were greeted with perfect winter weather and thankfully this year, no fog. As expected some set very good lap times, none better than Geoff Noble in his super charged Honda powered Elise, quickest on both tracks with some very impressive lap times. It was great to see club member Dave Palmer also a member of the BMW Club, sharing the 996 GT3 with son Clint not only making up the numbers for BMW but also their quickest drivers. Mike McGelliget, a Morgan Park regular was quickest for Z Car in his 1974 260Z. The award for “never giving up” must go to HSCC member, Noel Caplet who absolutely fried the front brakes on his Subaru Liberty to the point where the pads were completely gone and the pad backing plates buckled from the heat. Noel went to the Bursons store in Warwick for a new set of pads to get back on track in the afternoon. Being road pads, these were also worn out after just 4 runs. Again great numbers from the MX5 and
The ICC points are determined by the results from the best 4 drivers from each club. At the end of the day our team was Brett Wentworth, Greg Turnham, Steve Cooper and Kevin Vedelago with lap times which gave PCQ a clear lead on the day and a maximum 20 points. This increased our lead in the competition to 73 points, with the Lotus Club 70 and BMW in third place on 56. Full ICC results for both club and individual driver’s categories can be found on our website. Nothing but positive comments from the other clubs with
many Morgan Park regulars saying this is the only opportunity they get to drive the E Circuit and also impressed with the number of runs and amount of track time they got. Also all appreciated the great BBQ lunch and a big thank you must go to Lee and her helpers. Again thanks to Kevin Vedelago, Jeff Clancey (lap timing), Alana Heffernan (event secretary), Nigel Faull (clerk of course), the flaggies including 4 from the Z Car Club and the other volunteers for all the hard work in making it the biggest ICC event of the year.

Porsche planning to enter Formula E From 2019 a Porsche works team will compete in Formula E. As a result, the company will be ending its involvement in the LMP1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the end of the 2017 season. Porsche maintains its focus on international GT racing, and will also concentrate its motorsport strategy on using the 911 RSR in the GT class of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the highlight of which is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as the American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and other long-distance classics. This realignment of motorsport is derived from the direction set out for the company in Porsche Strategy 2025, which will see Porsche develop a combination of pure GT vehicles and fully electric sports cars, such as the first fully battery-powered Mission E road car. “Entering Formula E and achieving success in this category are the logical outcomes of our Mission E. The growing freedom for in-house technology developments makes Formula E attractive to us”, says Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG. “Porsche is working with alternative, innovative drive concepts. For us, Formula E is the ultimate competitive environment for driving forward the development of high-performance vehicles in areas such as environmental friendliness, efficiency and sustainability”. Porsche has already taken the first steps towards developing its own Formula E racing car this year. At the same time, Porsche is increasing its commitment in the GT class. “A diversity of manufacturers and the quality of both WEC and IMSA have led us to strengthen our commitment and concentrate our energies on using the 911 RSR”, says
Steiner. “We want to be number one. To do that, we must invest accordingly”. After four highly successful years, three victories in a row at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and World Championship titles in both the team and driver classification in 2015 and 2016, Porsche will leave the LMP1 class behind. Nevertheless, this year the works team from Weissach wants to defend the two World Championship titles one more time. The season ends on November 18 in Bahrain. Fritz Enzinger, Vice President LMP1 and a central figure in the return of Porsche to top-level motorsport in 2014, says: “Building up the Le Mans team from scratch was a huge challenge. Over the years, we have developed an incredibly successful and professional team. This will be our basis going forward. I am certain that we will maintain our high level in Formula E. Confidence is high, and we are excited to get started”. Porsche will keep the successful LMP1 team fully intact, including the factory drivers. Alongside ventures in other racing series and the intensive preparation for Formula E, Porsche is examining other fields of application and development areas. Formula E is the world’s first purely electric racing series and was launched on September 13, 2014. The International Automobile Federation, or FIA, which is also responsible for Formula 1, has organised the series to make a statement in favour of electromobility and to get more young people excited about motorsport. Unlike most other series, the season begins in the autumn and ends in summer. The race venues are specially designed street courses in the heart of major cities, meaning the sport comes to the spectators – and not the other way around. Electromobility is playing an important role in the mobility of tomorrow, especially in urban environments. Porsche Cars Australia

Love secures endurance title in Queensland Porsche Junior sweeps Jim Richards Endurance Trophy races West Australian Jordan Love has won the 2017 Jim Richards Endurance Trophy at Queensland Raceway, becoming the first driver to secure the honour with a clean sweep of endurance race victories. Love dominated the opening race of the penultimate Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli round, moving past Brenton Grove after an early safety car intervention – caused by Brett Boulton's opening lap spin into the turn three run off – before establishing a gap on the field. Love maintained a healthy race lead until the safety car was recalled to the circuit on lap 36 when Rob Woods and Shane Barwood spun into the turn three gravel trap after battling for eighth and ninth position, forcing the race to finish until safety car conditions.
"I'm stoked with the Elite Class race win and also to place third in the endurance championship," said Gilbertson. "It couldn't have worked out better moving into the class lead at my home track. I've just got to keep my nose clean for tomorrow's two races and hopefully extend my class lead by the end of the weekend." John Morriss drove an impressive race, coming through from towards the rear of the field to place sixth, while Ross McGregor too performed strongly during the endurance race with seventh outright by the finish, his equal best result of the season.
The win handed Love the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy title and an extended 70 point lead in the outright standings. "I'm thrilled to secure the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy, which was certainly my key focus heading into today," said Love. "We had a great race, though it didn't come easily; the weather was fairly hot and I wasn't wearing a cool suit so it proved testing throughout the race, so I am stoked with the outcome."
Brendan Cook was the victor in the epic race-long Class B battle, which saw he and David Greig swap positions several times throughout the 40-lap race. Greig placed ninth from Tony Martin, Phil Morriss and Barwood in 12th. Woods and Boulton were the only two non-finishers for the race.
Once losing the lead, Grove drove a consistent race to finish a clear second place, with leading Elite Class racer Anthony Gilbertson unchallenged in third. John Karytinos placed fourth, holding Sam Shahin at bay until the late race safety car and subsequently chequered flag. The result placed Gilbertson third in the endurance standings – behind Love and Grove – and promoted him to the lead of the class standings for the first time since scoring pole position at the season opening Sandown round. Ian & Wendy Button do Targa… Get out and drive. A few decades ago during a discussion on how many children the final wife and I would have it was agreed that having just two was great, one each to look after on outings and ultimately I could have a Porsche, as it would only fit us and two kids. A mate beat me to it buying an old 74 Targa, so I stuck with hot VW’s, various euros and an RX8 took its place. (The rotor is still with us) Some twenty years later the dream was ultimately realised and after much research a final month manual Black on Black 997.1 2S joined the stable. It was on the bucket list longer than the dream of doing Targa… and a car as amazing as the Carrera S deserves to be driven. When I had the opportunity to tick Targa off the bucket list, there was only one way to do it… another road trip. Just as the purchase inspection had turned out, I’d flown to Melbourne and confirming she was the one, only to be told a car carrier was a 4-6 week wait. I called Wendy from the outskirts of Melbourne saying “I missed my flight”, she responded “Well you obviously bought it, I can hear the engine”. Yep, I drove it home to Cairns in two and a bit days… and we bonded : ) Christened Betty, (ooh ooh Black Betty) there has hardly been a day since that I have not driven her. Many queried putting ‘too many k’s on what will be a classic’… why T.F buy a car like this and have it sit in a shed, I can’t comprehend. Recently asked by another aficionado do I trickle charge my Porsche?… Ahh, no I just drive it, and everyday is as good a day as any other. So Anotherwayround 2017 was to be Targa Tasmania and one of the best things about the adventure was when I suggested to my wife that we could camp on the trip; this was met with an enthusiastic response. I lapped Australia in 2010 on my Ducati, you can fit a lot more gear including a car fridge in a Porsche. We left Cairns early on day one, just
before Townsville you veer right to Charters Towers to join the excellent inland route, greeting the first 110 zone on the outskirts of town. The traffic thins significantly, a hand held CB allows for safe overtaking road trains and advise on conditions, ie if you are going to come across any highway taxation devices, mobile or otherwise. Covering just over 1500 rapid k’s on the first day, we overnighted in a motel
north of Roma… a few skippies keeping us focused for the last hour after sunset. Up again at the crack of dawn, I cleaned the bugs from the grills and took off into the cool morning air. Just before 7am we encountered our first police car, in fact the first car coming the other direction! The zone had just changed from 110 to 100, go figure. Yes, the unmarked HSV Maloo’s lights came on, our sin, doing 112 in the middle of nowhere with zero traffic, so of course we contributed to the states coffers. A coffee and breakfast in Roma had us heading back east, encountering lots of traffic the other way. We hit Toowoomba by lunchtime and were on the Gold Coast a few hours later. Heading straight for another car wash debug as we had a video shoot that afternoon with Betty as the star. Once again the early bird is the way to travel and we freewayed south to overnight in Port Macquarie, spending a few days with my folks. The old man enjoyed a drive… an old petrol head, he enjoyed opening the taps, mum was happy in the passenger seat, she
thought it was a lovely car, and liked the sound it made, it felt very fast to her too. We passed a GT3 outside Newcastle who didn’t wave. Why is it you only see Cayenne and Macans out on the open road… spotted a Boxster in a local car yard and only one other 911 all the way down the coast; he waived. We were on a mission though, there was a ferry to catch, and we had 5 days to get there, we took the road through the National Park, south of Sydney and the cool coastal bridge with our next overnight at Surf Beach Holiday park in Kiama, time to break out the tent…. you really can fit a lot more gear in a 911 than on a bike. We had kids have their photos taken with Betty and answered lots of questions about camping in such a nice car, giving me the opportunity to comment, ‘if you camp on your road trips you can afford one of these’. Continuing on the coast, Narooma was our next overnight in one of the most spectacular spots on the trip right above a deserted beach. A shorter next day to Marlo, where the Snowy River meets the sea… apparently, a lovely little township with a great road in and a nice pub for dinner. Great camp site too. This gave us a pretty cruisy day with some

great driving roads over the border into Victoria as we headed to Port Melbourne and a date with the Spirit of Tasmania. We met some of the Targa tour team lining up for the trip across Bass Strait, following a couple of 911’s onto the ship gave us a taste of the days ahead. We were impressed with the ship, definitely go with a cabin for the crossing. The am arrival in Devonport was met with drizzling rain, and the drive to Launceston was in the dark. As the sun rose the rain dissipated, although we were in for a wet first few days of Targa. The Air B&B checkin was that arvo so we took the time to have a look around town, get some supplies and do our scrutineering. Meeting my Targa heroes Jim Richards and Barry Oliver at log in we got the obligatory selfie, as did Betty with JR’s wheels. The excitement was building as we had 2000k’s of touring and special stages to look forward to and tomorrow was race, sorry, the tour start. Raining again as we drove out to stage 1, Kayena, a 7k introduction to the TT. You’re kidding… how much fun is having the whole road and using every bit, well, at least the first three gears of our flat 6’s performance, with no on coming
traffic… and up it ! The Mustang I was following waved me through for stage 2, there is strictly no passing on the tour. Next up was the Sidling, 14 k’s and we were just starting to get in the groove… wet roads pfff, I had new Michelin Super Sports, a calm navigator and a grin a mile wide. Molina was another 9k stage then Weldborough Pass threw in a couple of cautions where previous competitors had speared off. We were keeping the shiny side up and having a ball. Continuing along the Tasman Highway, Pyengana was another short stage, followed by some great open sections along Elephant Pass then the final stage with multiple cautions on Rossarden to finish the day. Keeping up the pace takes a lot out of you, Wendy was ready for a stiff drink, but didn’t scream once. Betty loved it too. Day two was a
short day as it fell on Anzac Day with just the George Town street circuit and heaps of enthusiast spectators. When you spot a camera, or kids, give it heaps ! The short High Plains and Moriaty opened day three, with the sunshine breaking through. Apparently I wasn’t the only competitor that washed their cars each night, and there were heaps of other nuenelfers participating. Including some awesome classics with real characters competing and a host of new metal in full race spec. We had a GT4 and a 996 GT3 RS in our group and then there were the chosen ones on the official Porsche Tour. Frankly most had no interest in talking with anyone else that wasn’t in a 991 and the Ferrari & Dutton Tour drivers including the La Ferrari bloke were more up for a chat. Palooma, followed by Sheffield were up next, great longer stages, followed by one of the highlights, Cethana, at 38k’s,
where we played with another Carrera S and an Aston and were all pumped by the end. Another day and more awesome roads, it was dry for the 36K Riana, another highlight, by then we had lost 2 from our pack of 12 including the GT3 RS and a Nissan GTR, that disappeared from our rear view mirror on a sharp bend. Hellyer Gorge, stage 21 was my next favorite, multiple hair pins, 25, 35 and 40 k corners, chasing an R8 was a real hoot. After an overnight in Strahan, the Queenstown stage is famous for the climb out of town, very wet and greasy with the traction control light flashing. Mount Arrowsmith at 53k’s, although damp with intermittent showers was just awesome, this was one stage we timed, not divulging our average speed, suffice to say every k over is not a killer, and we could have been in the points. Without a blow by blow, there were many more

fantastic roads to be driven, with some fantastic stages outside Hobart on the final day. The stone chips were worth the admission, we met some great people from all walks of life, most on their first Targa, most said they would return. The organizers deserve credit for putting such a professional show together, the Targa Tour team were fantastic and really allowed us all to enjoy the six days ‘hooning’ on some of the best roads in the country. The car performed faultlessly and reveled in having the cobwebs blown out, we kissed the redline on numerous occasions and I can’t fathom how many gear changes I made over our 10500 k's in 20 day adventure. Following a bit of coastal touring up the Tassie East coast and another overnight
ferry crossing we took just over four days, free camping up the western inland route back to Cairns. We were just following the GPS the most direct route home… the Hay Plains a highlight, except the 130 in a 100 zone, ouch, obviously wasn’t all out of my system in the TT. We even covered a 100 or so k’s of dirt and Betty just loved it. What an amazing touring machine the 997 is, we reckon the motorhome is a now a long way off, as there is a lot more of Australia to see and touring Porsche style is the ultimate adventure. Bring on the next Anotherwayround, via Broome to Targa 2018 !

Churchill Fellowships are fully funded travel scholarship for those requiring to travel overseas in order to conduct research and develop skills “for the enrichment of Australian society”. As coach building and companies specialising in this trade are so rare in Australia, Kip has embarked upon a 10 week journey to USA, UK and Italy. The first stop was Massachusetts……

You know you’re ‘someone’ when your phone contacts list includes Magnus Walker’s personal phone number. Kip had already made contact with Magnus prior to his trip, but met him at Pebble Beach Concourse De Elegance. Magnus was a big fan of Kips colourful outfit, particularly his tartan tie saying “it’s the only tie you’ll ever need’….(which is probably true given Kip’s line of work). Kip has been invited to hang out with Magnus at his workshop in the coming weeks. Needless to say Kip accepted the offer. A message from the Jay Leno to Kip. They met for the first time at a Q&A forum at Pebble Beach. Kip has received a personal invitation from Jay to see his collection.

After introducing himself at the door and explaining that he was “from Australia and with the Winston Churchill Foundation”, he was given a ticket and a seat up the front at the event organisers table.
At time of writing, Kip is driving from Pebble Beach to Las Angeles where he will commence a one week intern placement with Steve Hogue – an internationally renowned coach Builder noted for his work with 356’s.

Hot and Cold: Global endurance test for the new Cayenne The third generation of the Porsche Cayenne is not far away. The new edition of this successful model, which has achieved more than 760,000 sales since 2002, has undergone a complex and challenging series of examinations. Taking place across the globe and under extreme conditions, the tests ensure that the SUV meets the highest quality requirements set by Porsche. In conditions ranging from minus 45 degrees to plus 50 degrees, the prototypes and pre-series vehicles complete a total of around 4.4 million test kilometres. Porsche is celebrating the world première of the new Cayenne on August 29, 2017. The third generation is a complete redevelopment. The drive and chassis as well as the display and control concept have been redesigned to further increase the spread between sportiness and comfort. The main objective of the elaborate testing process is to achieve a perfect balance between the many components, some of which were developed especially for the Cayenne.
stability tests on and offroad at the Porsche test site at Weissach, as well as outside the R+D facitily. A vehicle life is simulated under conditions that are so tough, they are unlikely to ever occur once the vehicle is owned by the customer. Under everyday conditions in urban traffic, on country roads and on the motorways, the vehicles cover up to 240,000 km within a few months. To simulate extreme stresses, the prototypes of the new Cayenne are being tested all around the world, including on race tracks traditionally used by Porsche to test all its models: In Germany, the Hockenheimring and the especially challenging Nürburgring-Nordschleife are used. In Italy, the test cars are put through their paces in continuous operation on the 12.6-km high-speed track at Nardò. The materials, sensors and electronics have to prove their quality and durability in different climate conditions – at up to plus 50 degrees Celsius in the sand dunes of Dubai (UAE) and on dusty slopes in Death Valley (USA) as well as at up to minus 45 degrees Celsius on ice and snow in Alaska (USA). The third generation of the Cayenne also had to stop-start traffic in the hot and humid conditions cities, master test tracks in Sweden, Finland and was transported to South Africa, Japan and New complete extensive on and offroad testing.

For the new Cayenne generation – referred to as E3 within Porsche – this process began as far back as 2014 with the test mules and has continued to this day with prototypes and pre-series vehicles. In addition to increasingly accurate virtual simulations, testing under real-life conditions is still highly valued at Porsche and represents the final examination for every new model produced by the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer. The full vehicle test is implemented to harmonise the interaction of all individual components and to test operational stability and functionality in real life driving. The aim is always to meet the highest quality demands at Porsche. Specifically, this process includes tough endurance tests on Hydropuls units, a hydraulic testing facility that applies artificial vibrations to both the chassis and body. Australia represents on invitational podiums David Wall and Tim Miles visit joint race podiums Porsche Carrera Cup Australia drivers have represented their championship in style during the pair of joint races with Porsche Carrera Cup Asia regulars, David Wall and Tim Miles securing podium finishes in their respective races. After Australian drivers won both combined races on their home turf last year, Carrera Cup Asia runners evened the score with two victories at the Sepang circuit this weekend, however there was representation from Australian runners on both podiums. In the first race for TAG Heuer Carrera Challenge and Carrera Cup Asia Pro-Am runners, Tim Miles finished a hardfought third outright, behind winner Yuey Tan and Chinese driver Evan Chen.
In the race for professional drivers from both series, David Wall made a perfect start from pole position and led the field into turn one. A battle with Carrera Cup Asia pacesetter Chris van der Drift followed, the Kiwi working his way past early in the race to secure a lead he wouldn't lose. The Pro race was run at breakneck pace; the fastest racing laps of the entire weekend set by the leading four cars, who ran line astern for much of the highly competitive race. Wall maintained a margin of less than one second for the remaining laps however ultimately settled for a close second position behind the former Carrera Cup Asia champion. Austrian young-gun Phillip Hamprecht finished third with Andre Heimgartner fourth in his Sonic Motor Racing entry.
Dean Cook started from pole however it was a flying start from Miles that saw him leap from fifth to third by the first corner. Tan and Miles both passed Cook and settled in at the lead of the race, while Stephen Grove and Evan Chen battled for third. Chen passed Grove mid race, then relegated Miles to third at the finish – ensuring Australian series representation on the podium. Grove finished fourth, Shane Smollen seventh and Dean Cook tenth while Graham Williams and Marc Cini scored 14th and 16th respectively.
Will Bamber completed the top-five, with five cars each from Carrera Cup Asia and Australia represented in the top-10 finishing positions. Dylan O'Keefe (7th), Alex Davison (8th) and Jaxon Evans (9th) were the other Aussies represented in the top 10. "I gave everything I could to Chris [van der Drift] then. I got a good start but the car took a little bit longer to come on than I wanted it to. I lost a bit time at the start and managed to get back to him but not enough to get the win, unfortunately. It was great race and the times were fast considering the rubber everyone was on," said Wall.
"I got a good start and elbowed myself into second place and lost a position back to third by the finish," said Miles. "It's such a fantastic event. It's amazing for Porsche to bring us here and race on an F1 circuit in such a welcoming atmosphere... and it cost me the same as going to Winton! It's just a fantastic experience. "It would be great to do more of these events. The invitational race gives the Challenge class drivers a chance to race for a win, which is fantastic. It was a very cool event." 34

MAYAN RALLY
Playa Del Carmen
The 2017 Mayan Rally was the fourth edition of this competition. Benjamín de la Peña, its founding president, said that this event which was held from May 19 to 28 is considered the only rolling museum in the world, a collection of 110 cars with great historical value. The cars will travel more than a thousand kilometers on the roads of the Yucatan Peninsula, with the aim of enhancing the cult of historic motoring, in a framework of cordiality and hospitality. In addition, social responsibility actions will be promoted, with the donation of wheelchairs and guidance on health issues for the benefit of the families of Mayan communities of Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, he said. He explained that with the support of the Telmex Foundation,
and the contribution of competitors, who will donate one peso for each kilometer traveled, and sponsors, medical care will be provided to children with diabetes type 1, and wheelchairs will be given to children, youth and adults who require them. Women will also be informed about the pros and cons of Hysterectomy, by the United Foundation for Chivis, and the Carlos Slim Foundation will give talks about the importance of organ donation, he remarked. This event wants to show the natural, gastronomic, cultural and archaeological wealth of this area in the Mayan World, while promoting the ‘We Are All for Mexico’ campaign. Phillip Island with the same attitude as we entered Queensland Raceway and aim to finish the season on a high."
Jordan Love, Anthony Gilbertson Brendan Cook win in Ipswich Jordan Love has departed a successful penultimate round of the 2017 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli season with one hand on the championship trophy, while Anthony Gilbertson and Sam Shahin are set for an epic Elite Class showdown at the Phillip Island finale. Love had an impressive Queensland Raceway round, securing the Jim Richards Endurance Trophy on Saturday before claiming a dominant victory in both Sunday races, sealing the round win and an almost unassailable lead in both the Outright and Professional Class standings. Brenton Grove's impressive Ipswich round, placing second in every race, was the only thing keeping the title race alive into the final round of the season. The clean sweep also continued Love's winning streak across 10 straight races, a new GT3 Cup Challenge record. The series now heads to Phillip Island on September 08-09 where Love will look to become the 2017 GT3 Cup Challenge champion. "It was a great weekend here in Queensland. I felt like I wasn't prepared enough for our last round in Sydney so I worked to ensure I was properly prepared heading into this weekend. It resulted in great results but also the ability to remain consistent all weekend," said Love. "There are still three more races remaining for the season so there are plenty of points up for grabs. We're going to go into
An entertaining Elite Class battle at Queensland Raceway has set up a sensational class title fight leading into the final round, with Gilbertson leading Shahin by a mere seven points after two exciting Sunday races. Gilbertson was leading the class battle in Sunday's race two before spinning, while a closely trailing Shahin clipped Gilbertson. Both cars sustained damage but were able to continue, allowing John Karytinos to take the race win from John Morriss, Brett Boulton, Shahin and Gilbertson. Gilbertson then repeated his race one effort with class victory in race three from Shahin and Karytinos, handing Gilbertson the class round win – from Karytinos and Shahin – and a sevenpoint class lead with three races remaining for the season. "It was brilliant to get the round win. From what happened in this morning's race I thought the weekend was over for me but I stormed through the field in the last race," said Gilbertson. "The battle between Sam Shahin, John Karytinos and myself has been great all year so it was pretty special to have all three of us on the podium this weekend. I can't wait for Phillip Island." Class B also provided many highlights for the Queensland Raceway round between Brendan Cook and class points leader David Greig, with two race wins and a second place in race three handing Cook his maiden class win in the series. Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli returns to the track in five weeks for its season finale at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on September 08-09, 2017.
