PRESIDENTS PROSE knots and because of the wind sent a little spray our way. I would sincerely like to thank our judges who had a very difficult job with some of the categories, Wagner for helping in the tent to organise the paperwork and the goodies bags as well as Grace Sorrenson who jumped in and worked helping Wagner and taking some amazing photographs. Without the two of you I would have been a huge mess. Thank you.

DOES EVERYONE HAVE THEIR MEMBERSHIP CARDS???? IN SOME CASES MORE THAN ONE I SHOULD EXPECT!! Only 3 mistakes I know of so not too bad for over 400+ cards in one go. Please let me know if you have not received your card as all have been sent. Secondly if you want a name badge please send me an email as a new order will be going in soon. A big welcome to all our new members, there are many of you which is fantastic, so hopefully we get to meet at one of our events in the near future. Our first attempt at live streaming our club night went ok. A few little things I have learnt not to do... Vertical videoing and I need a microphone which has been sorted. It was really nice to hear that a couple of members went to watch a few minutes to see what it was like and stayed to watch the whole stream. Members overseas logged in and some from the coast and Cairns who could not get in enjoyed the broadcast. A tweak to fix the sound issue and videoing the right way around will improve things immensely but all in all for a first attempt it was a success. Recently I have been down to Victoria for the annual Presidents meeting, a fantastic night and full day of meeting the different heads of departments and learning all about their areas of expertise. More about this in my article further in the magazine. Once again Pamela Ward, our club liaison for Porsche Australia, organised an outstanding evening and memorable day of fun and information. Thanks Pamela and Toni. To the other Presidents it was great to see some old faces and to meet the new. So much happening these last few months which I hope many members have enjoyed and will participate in in the coming months as there is so much to come in 2018. The Concour was a great success with over 70 cars attending, a number of invited guests from the 356 register and some stunningly presented Porsche from our club. Thank you to all who came along and enjoyed the day, albeit for the wind I think everyone agreed it was a fantastic venue except for the idiots doing crazy speeds up the channel where they should have been doing 6 6

So we wind up our year with the Christmas Party and Awards night which is being held up in Mooloolaba this year in the function room at the Mooloolaba Surf Club. Gorgeous venue. Please consider attending the night as it is one event the club sponsors heavily for its members. Generally they are a fun night and a great social evening; the ticket price covers your meal, entertainment and full open bar so I believe it is a very good deal. Tables are set for 10 people so if you want to sit at a table with particular people please let us know otherwise I will set tables and you could end up near me!!. Accommodation is organised at the Mantra, check the club website social events under the Christmas party for the cost and the form you are required to fill out to secure your room at a better rate. Finally; There will be one event on the 9th June 2018 here in Queensland, run by the club, for Porsche 70th Anniversary and one over in Monterey USA for the USA Rennsport. The June event will be a meet up and gathering in Brisbane before a drive through the mountains and coast then onto a formal dinner event on the gold coast, possibly Sanctuary Cove, and overnight stay. I am also hoping to bring into this night some fundraising for a men’s charity. Rennsport itinerary is in this magazine and on the website. Further firm details on costs will come after the hotels and other venues get back to me with group rates. The Itinerary however will be as I have it set, if you wish to do some things but not others, meet somewhere along the way or just involved in Monterey that is all good we can accommodate most wishes. A $500 deposit is required to confirm your spot and would like to be finalising numbers by Christmas. Now everyone on the committee is back off their holidays it is time for me to have some down time!! I am off to find some silver backs in Uganda and then laze around the Greek Isles so if there are urgent issues please contact Bill Black. Remember we are always open to new ideas so if there is something you would like to see done or do something we haven’t organised please let us know, right down to constructive criticism, it all helps. Once again to our advertisers this year a big thank you to you, without you we would not be able to produce such a wonderful magazine for our members and others. And to our sponsors Phil Ross of Shannons Insurance , Dan Bowden and Bowdens Own Products, Sven Koremans and BP Service Centre Warwick and Sam from Prestige Automotive care . Til next time Bis bald, und genießen Sie Ihren Porsche

Round 9, which was also a round of the ICC, has been cancelled and will not be re-scheduled. The consequence of this is that our competition is now a 9 round competition not a 10 round. Pursuant to our Motorsport Rules of Competition, we will still be required to drop 3 rounds of the 9. Also, qualification for trophies is now 4 rounds instead of 5, as previously. There are a few people in contention for trophies that are on 3 rounds, so attending the last round (Khanacross 12 Nov 17) is essential.

We have completed 8 Rounds of our Motorsport Calendar, and we have decided not to include the Club Championship Table in this edition of the magazine. Also, you may have notice that the Championship Table that appears on our website has not been updated past Round 7. The reason is obvious, we would like there to be some surprises at the Christmas Party when we present the trophies. By now, most of you will be aware of the very sad news that Norwell is no longer available for Sprints. As a result, the

In late November, we will be looking to lock down our 2018 Calendar. If you have any suggestions or requests, this is the time to make them. In principle, we will have 6 Sprints (2 x Morgan Park, 2 x Lakeside and 2 x QR) and 4 Non-Sprints (Motorkhana, Hillclimb, Autocross and Khanacross) We are also looking at an inter-state non-competition event – stay tuned. Finally, our Christmas Party on the 9 December 2017, this is also our Motorsport Presentation Evening, so get along, it will be a great way to celebrate a successful year in Motorsport. Hello Peter, I had an email from the Porsche club requesting information on my Porsche. It is a 1956 356A T1 Speedster. RHD Australian delivered. I believe the 18th Porsche delivered to Australia. Delivered to Sydney. I think I am owner 3 or 4. Has matching engine no and chassis no with factory Kardex.

Unfortunately not original transmission. Now has a C gearbox, but I do have a spare A transaxle. Had it resprayed to original colour, aquamarine. Have included photos including recent 356 registry club drive on September 17 for Ferry Porsche's birthday plus others. Regards Mark Ready

LETTERS Hi Peter

The only change I made was to remove the Carrera S rims and add painted Carrera Sport rims in a mid-grey (see 2nd photo). The car is a fair-weather weekend driver and recently ticked over 40,000km with no major issues other than a hood motor replaced under warranty. Some of the interior plastics have started to break down and I am having Brisbane Porsche's restorer re-paint them next week.

Not sure if my car will be of any real interest but since I was asked I thought I would respond and let you guys be the judge. It's a 2005 987 3.2 S (Nov reg) in metallic black and I am the third owner including Porsche Australia. Based on my enquiries in 2007 with Porsche it is one of the first to arrive. They advised it was one of two Tiptronic cars allocated as Press cars and registered to Porsche but as it was the back-up car and the manuals were more in demand, it was subsequently sold with only 290km on the clock. I subsequently bought it from Weltmeister in Melbourne (refer their photo attached) who had traded it for a 911 with around 7,700km on it which went to around 9,500 when my son and I drove it home. As a press car there wasn't much it doesn't have in the way of options which includes 19"s, full leather interior, Bose sound with stacker, Sat Nav, PASM, Xenon's and the Chrono pack.

The car is still great fun to drive and while a manual would possibly have been a better choice it was hard to find one with the option levels offered by this car which make it to my mind a great little sport car with a lot still to offer relative to its more recent peers. Kind regards Steve Wiltshire

Cars & Coffee Gold Coast

The 1st Cars & Coffee for Spring was absolutely fantastic. We had a beautiful bright blue sky with nary a cloud in sight, the air temperature was just right, no wind chill and the birds were singing. This surely encouraged the autophiles to come out in droves and we have a smashing array of vehicles, from latest Porsche GT3 RS to the Vintage French Racing Salmson and all in between. The selection for Car of the Meet was certainly very many and extremely difficult to pick from the marvellous automobiles present and it was narrowly won by a Fire Engine Red Ford Mustang Mach 1. It was simply gorgeous and presented extremely well. I have always had a soft spot for the rear profile of the Mach 1’s. Porsche was the most represented marque with having 9 magnificent examples from all era’s and all models. We had the best ever

10

showing of 928’s with 3 land Sharks. The next best represented marque was Rolls Royce with 8, championing the very best of British motoring. As one attendee said, they are more common than Holden’s in these parts and how true that was. We only had 3 Holden’s. As mentioned, a charming French Racing Salmson was present and was so popular that the owner was besieged by people wanting drives in it. He relented and was a real good sport. There were others too who were swapping keys to their auto’s and everyone was having a jolly good time. I’ll remember to bring a glass bowl next time to place keys in. My favourites have always been the brightly coloured British BMC classic’s with from the Trimph Stag, Vauxhall and Prefect. An 80’s icon, the Blue on Blue Cadillac Seville added some pizazz for the Americans and

was joined by the beastly Chrysler and 38 Ford Sloper. American muscle was present too with a Chrysler Charger 770, 2 Mach 1 Fastback’s, and Pontiac. A resplendent Ford Customline Convertible stole the show with its classic Red and White combination. It was absolutely Concours. Several modern classics were present with the Turbocharged Subaru WRX STI, 2 Toyota 86’s, and BMW M3. You simply can’t go wrong with an M car. Honourable mentions were the monstrous 500SL, Mini, Ford Escort Mk1, Land Rover Safari Top, Volvo 164, Royal Enfield bike and Toyota Corona. hen you are shopping for a new car, spare a thought for car buyers in Singapore who reputedly pay the highest prices in the world for a car. So much so that even for middle income earners a car is out of the question. For example a base model, 1.6 Hyundai will set you back $86,999 + (up $1,000) from 3 days before writing this. None of these inflated prices seem to deter those who appreciate exotic cars. There is no shortage of Porches to be seen with quite a percentage of Panameras. Add to that an abundance of BMW's, the occasional Roller, Volvo, multitudes of Mercedes and even a McLaren outside the hotel. A myriad of taxes inflate costs to a point where the latest model Porsche 911 GT2 will set you back S$1,211,688 plus COE.

Category B, which is for cars above 1,600cc or maximum power output above 97kW, will see a monthly quota of 2,570 COEs, A COE currently adds between $40,000 to $50,000 There are a total of five factors that determine the cars final price, starting with the Open Market Value, the baseline price that others, for example in Germany, may pay for that car. then you can add: Additional Registration Fee, (ARF) made up from first $20,000 100% of OMV next between $20,001 to $50,000 140% of OMV anything above $50,000 180% of OMV next up comes Excise Duty 20% of OMV GST on both the OMV and ARF 7% Local dealers margin 22% (on a Mitsubishi ASX) on a Mazda 6 the dealer margin has been reported as 33%. For numbers lovers and for the latest statistical year (2016) some of the cars purchased were: Lamborghini 81 Mclaren 19 Porsche 696 Maserati 125 Bentley 108 Ferrari 130 The biggest seller was Honda with 18,878.

What is a COE you ask? A Certificate of Entitlement (COE) is basically the right to drive the car for 10 years and is market driven. After ten years, scrap the car or fork out for a new COE. COE prices can increase steeply during a period of high demand which in turn causes prices of cars to increase. The COE is a system designed to limit the number of cars on the road and is a twice monthly auction system. For the period August to October availability in Category A, which is for cars up to 1,600cc and maximum power output not exceeding 97kW, there was a monthly quota of 3,630.

The number of cars in Singapore is falling, latest statistics from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) show. The number of all registered cars stood at a five-year low of 575,353 at the end of last year, according to figures on LTA's website

‘Ferdie’ – a 2001 model 986 The latest update in the saga of Ferdie’s motor melt down. We were not able to locate anyone to repair the cracked cylinder head with any degree of confidence and warranty, so Don at DHM and I decided to find other alternatives. I located a later model (2004) full motor at Porshapart in Melbourne and after discussions with DHM I purchased it and arranged to have it sent direct to the workshop in Brisbane. While this was happening, DHM located a spare head in great condition in Sydney and I decided to purchase that also which would provide 2 motor choices, depending on which one would be a better long term option. The next phase was to have the existing

by Don Osborne and replacement heads crack tested to help ensure reliability and inspect the remaining existing engine for parts to replace. At the same time, the cooling system was repeatedly flushed with cleaner and both radiators were sent away for cleaning and pressure testing, including the heater core. The oil cooler was crack and pressure tested also. At this stage I left for a planned surf therapy trip to Hawaii for stress relief and holidays. While I was away, we decided to install the newly purchased motor, so it was bolted to the transmission with new main seal, IMS bearing, water pump and filters. After getting it totally fitted, it was discovered that the car’s ECU would not recognise the new motor, the sensors were different and couldn’t be exchanged. Obviously the newer engine had to be removed and it was then replaced with the rebuilt original motor that included new head, valve seals, IMS bearing, water pump, main seal, timing chain/guides and filters and lots of other components.

READY FOR RESTORATION On a recent catch up with my neighbour, Garrett Russell, he told me he was finally going to undertake a project that he had been planning for quite a few years – the restoration of his beloved 1960 356B that he has owned since 1975. He bought it for the princely sum of $1900 at the time, which would have felt like a small fortune for a 15 year old car. This Australian delivered 1960 beauty has been in storage since its owner went to live in Hong Kong in 1979. On his return to Brisbane, work and family took priority over the car, which was slowly

Fortunately, the newer motor was returned to Melbourne for a refund and after returning from holiday, Ferdie was happily waiting to be driven as the makers’ intended, albeit with some restraint until it was clear all was bedded in smoothly. The first drive after several months was an utter joy. The crew at DHM were thoughtful, caring and thorough with the result that my boxy goes better than ever and although it will need further coolant flushing, the temperature remains in the normal range whenever I drive it, so a good result all round I think. It’s nice to be able to finish on a high note, even the exhaust sounds better than before.

by Bruce Allom with its black paintwork and 90hp 1600 engine. It is his intention to leave the cars exterior in the original colour however the interior will be tan, replacing the original red from the factory. The engine will have a full rebuild although it was running when stored some 38 years ago. The disc brakes that were installed on the car post factory will be replaced with the original drums in keeping with the intention of originality. He is hoping to have the project completed by 2020 – in time to celebrate its 60th birthday. The owner

deteorating through lack of use. It changed location a couple of times as the owner moved home but it was always well stored to protect its integrity. I couldn’t wait to go to the storage shed, remove the dust covers and watch it being loaded on the tow truck for its journey to Brisbane’s northside for a back to original restoration. The car is almost the same as when it left the factory

is participating in assisting the experts in achieving a high-level outcome and I am sure it will be a wonderful sight on our local roads for years to come. He is planning to keep it in his hanger, parked between his 1959 and 1961 classic aircraft, so I guess that almost makes it a barn find once again.

The most powerful Sport Turismo becomes a plug-in hybrid Zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and 3.0-litres fuel consumption

New Panamera version with 500 kW and 49 kms pure electric range Porsche is expanding its hybrid range with a powerful plug-in hybrid added to the Panamera Sport Turismo model line. The new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo flagship model combines a four-litre V8 engine with an electric motor resulting in a system power of 500 kW / 680 hp. Even when just above idle speed, the Panamera Turbo offers 850 Nm of torque. This means it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h. Average consumption in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is 3.0 L/100 km. The most powerful Sport Turismo has a range of up to 49 kilometres using solely electric power and therefore producing zero local emissions. It is not just the balance between performance and efficiency that makes the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo unique in its segment; its spatial concept, including a large tailgate, low loading edge, increased luggage compartment volume and a 4+1 seating configuration, means that the new flagship of the model line offers a high standard of everyday practicality. Zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and 3.0-litres fuel consumption As with the Panamera sports saloon flagship model, Porsche is now also demon-strating the huge performance potential of hybrid technology with the Sport Turismo. The boost strategy used in the series-production all-wheel drive Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo comes from the Porsche 918 Spyder super sports car. Even at 1,400 rpm, the V8 biturbo (404 kW / 550 hp) and the electric motor (100 kW / 136 hp) delivers maximum system 16

torque of 850 Nm. The decoupler integrated into the hybrid module is electromechanically actuated via an Electric Clutch Actuator. The result is short response times and a high level of comfort. The fast-shifting, eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmits power to the standard adap-tive all-wheel drive system Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The E-performance drive allows the vehicle to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. It only takes a further 8.5 seconds to reach the 200 km/h mark. Top speed is 310 km/h. Despite this level of performance, the plug-in hybrid model is also extremely efficient: The result from the New European Driving Cycle was fuel con-sumption of 3.0 L/100 km and power consumption of 17.6 kWh/100 km. The Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo has a range of up to 49 kilometres and a top speed of 140 km/h when driven solely using electric power, which results in no local emissions. The lithiumion battery has an energy content of 14.1 kWh charges with-in 2.4 to 6 hours, depending on the charger and power connection. Unique design, adaptive roof spoiler and 4+1 seating concept The Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo offers all of the innovations of the second gen-eration Panamera. These include the digitalised Porsche Advanced Cockpit, ground-breaking assistance systems such as Porsche InnoDrive including adaptive cruise control and optional rear-axle steering. Another of these innovations is the roof spoiler, which is unique in the segment, the pitch of which is set to one of three different angles depending on the driving situa-tion and selected vehicle settings. It also generates additional downforce of up to 50 kg on the rear axle. Up to a speed of 170 km/h, the aerodynamic guide element – a central system component of the Porsche

Active Aerodynamics (PAA) – stays in its retracted position at an angle of minus seven degrees to follow the roof line, which slopes to the rear. Above 170 km/h, the roof spoiler automatically moves to the performance position with an angle of plus one degree, thereby increasing driving stability and lateral dy-namics. When in the Sport and Sport Plus driving modes, the roof spoiler automatically moves to the performance position at speeds of 90 km/h upwards. PAA also provides active assistance by adapting the roof spoiler’s angle of inclination to plus 26 degrees when the panoramic sliding roof is open at a speed of 90 km/h or above in order to compensate for the turbulence created.

Conceptually, the top-of-the-line model offers all of the advantages of the new Sport Turismo range resulting from the avantgarde design. The roof line of the Sport Tur-ismo is raised in comparison to the sports saloon allowing easier entry and exit at the rear along with greater head clearance. The usability of the luggage compart-ment benefits from the electrically operated wide opening tailgate with its load height of just 628 millimetres. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is also equipped with three rear seats. The two outside seats take the form of individual seats – in keeping with the model line’s claim for sporty performance with maximum passenger comfort – there-by producing a 2+1 configuration at the rear. Two electrically adjustable individual seats for the rear are available as an option. Measured to the upper edge of the rear seats, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo offers 425 litres of storage space. The backrests

of the three rear seats fold down together or individually (in a 40:20:40 split) and are unlocked electrically from the luggage compartment. In this case, the loading volume increases to up to 1,295 litres. Extensive standard equipment including ceramic brakes The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo is available by special order in Australia priced from $466,400*. Standard equipment is extensive and includes: Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC Sport) roll stabilisation including the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) rear differential lock, high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) braking system, 21-inch alloy wheels in a 911 turbo design, Power Steering Plus, Sport Chrono Package and auxiliary air conditioning. Also standard is the three-chamber air suspension including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) for a broad range between a high level of driving dynamics and driving com-fort. Fuel consumption** and emissions Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo: combined fuel consumption 3.0 L/100 km; combined energy consumption 17.6 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions 69 g/ km. * Prices are recommended retail prices before statutory and dealer delivery charges, which vary from State to State. ** Fuel Consumption Consumption figures are not reflective of real world driving conditions. Consumption figures are per the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test cycle ) in accordance with the Euro 5 and Euro 6 (715/2007/EC and 692/2008/EC) measurement method and should be used for comparative purposes only. The figures do not refer to an individual vehicle nor do they constitute part of the offer. Higher equipment levels may affect consumption and performance. Porsche Cars Australia

Club Night Report JULY Porsche Centre Gold Coast hosted our monthly club night with a good roll up of Cold Coast members taking advantage of the short trip to their local dealer’s show room. Sales Manager, Nick Price gave us the run down on the latest models and what is on the way including the incredible 991 GT2 with some amazing performance figures from its 725 HP engine. Vice President, Bill Black put Bobby McAlpine, PCGC Workshop Manager, on the spot with an impromptu Q & A interview that covered his early days as a mechanic in Scotland and working for Glenvarigill the Porsche and Ferrari dealer in Edinburgh. This dealership was owned by the McKinnon family who also owned the Drambuie Distillery which provided Bobby with his monthly bonus. Bobby spoke about how he came to Australia and like most young travellers ran out of money and being a qualified Porsche Technician, landed a job with PCGC working his way up to become Workshop Manager.

AUGUST Our AGM was held at PCB with the election of the 2017 -2018 committee and voting on some changes to the club constitution. Allan Carseldine was presented with the annual “Club Person of the Year” award for his support of club events and contribution of excellent photographs for our magazine and website gallery. SEPTEMBER Being the club night just before our annual Concours, it was timely to have guest speaker Sam from Prestige Automotive Car Care talking about concours preparation and the extensive range of Bowdens Own products the he uses in his car detailing business. Lee Cooper thanked Sam for his generous offer to cosponsoring our Club Concours with Shannons Insurance. OCTOBER A very big turn- out of members to see the amazing creation by Brad McKernan (McKernan Restorations) who is building a 550 Spyder (pictured below) from scratch with the body work by Steve Bodrog. Bill Black conducted a Q & A session with Brad also covering his 356, 911, 904 and 910 projects with accompanying photos. Nothing seemed unachievable for Brad as he showed a 356 quad cam fan housing and 911 slide valve throttle assembly he has made. Members were drawn to the 550 Spyder to marvel at the workmanship of Brad’s hand -made tubular steel chassis and Steve’s hand formed polished aluminium panels that can only be described as a work of art. We would like to thank Brad’s wife Mika for the “slide show” presentation. Also Anthony who has commissioned Brad to build the 550 Spyder for making it available on the night and Towie Paul for getting the 550 to and from the PCB showroom, thank you for making the night possible. Phil Ross from Shannons spoke about the upcoming Queen St Mall display with PCQ and Lee thanked Phil for Shannons support at the Concours held in September.

Inter Club Challenge Round 6. Autocross

by Bill Black

Again a very successful round of the 2017 Inter Club Challenge saw 17 PCQ members support the autocross event held by the Lotus Club on the driver training area at Lakeside. The event was fully subscribed with a total of 66 drivers representing eight ICC clubs. The circuit was the same layout as we used last year for Rd 8 of our club competition. Although lap times are around only 50 seconds, it is still very challenging and technical track. There is change in elevation with an up- hill run to turn 1 and then the very challenging turn 2 which has a blind approach, is off- camber, down hill and tightens on exist. The surface conditions change with bitumen up to turn 4 then onto concrete for the 400 degree circuit of the circular skid pan requiring delicate throttle control and balance of power to ensure good speed without inducing massive oversteer. The final 3 corners are tight esses where grip levels always seem low resulting in a number of drivers “losing it” and crossing the finish line either sideways or going backwards through the timing beam. Although very challenging and a great test of driving skills, it is a safe event with lower top speeds making it an ideal introduction event for members wanting to get into club motorsport. Unlike a motorkhana where “wrong directions” are common, it is virtually impossible to go the wrong way. As with all multi-club events there was a great assortment of

interesting cars. Host club Lotus with by far the biggest number of drivers had a rare Europa and Lotus 7 from the 1960’s through to a plethora of modern Elises. Also running was a D Type Jag replica, its beautiful lines only spoilt by the small diameter Minilites which did not look as good as the more correct 15” Dunlop style alloy wheels. This departure from tradition was in the pursuit of lower gearing and a better choice of tyres . Just as King Canute couldn’t stop the tide coming in, the lovers of Webers, megaphones and the smell of Castrol R will not be able to stop the march of electric vehicles. Even Porsche has announced it will be going down that track with an E motorsport programme in the future. One has to admire HSCC member Greg Alderding for tackling the autocross in his home built electric motorkhana special. Greg realised that the disadvantages of short range from electric cars would not be a problem with motorkhanas, autocross and hillclimb events, and also knew that instant torque from zero revs would be a definite plus. He started off with a black sheet of paper and bits and pieces left over from his Nissan Pulsar that he previously ran in these motorsport events. He built a tubular steel chassis 20

and using the Pulsar clutch, 5 speed gearbox, steering and brakes and bolted 75 kW DC electric motor directly to the bell housing. The lead acid batteries first used proved both dangerous and inefficient and were replaced with 1/3 of the lithium ion battery pack from a Holden Volt giving about 7 kWh. Greg said the handling is compromised by the front wheel drive set up and the poorly designed rear suspension. As with all home built specials, Greg said it was a steep learning curve and this one will soon be replaced by a Mk 2 version incorporating rear wheel drive and hopefully eliminating many of the problems encountered with the current car (no pun intended). Google “Full Charge Motorsport” for an onboard video of Greg competing in a Khanacross at Willowbank. Honours on the day went to the host club, Lotus with home track advantage and the greatest number of competitors. They scored 20 points while our PCQ team was a close second adding 19 points to our tally for the year. Our quickest driver was Steve Foss in his Westfield XTR2 with a time which gave 2nd place overall. Glen Wallace (991 GT3) and Jason Arnold 993 were our next best which was a great result for Jason as he was fighting diabolical oversteer all day. Our team effort has maintained PCQ’s healthy lead in both outright and the road registered classes in the competition after 6 rounds. Full ICC results are on the Club website and as it was also a round of our club motorsport competition, PCQ member’s times are with Kevin’s report. Our thanks go to the Lotus Club for organizing the event and particularly Porsche Club member Gail Hart, who spent the entire day looking after the timing equipment and recording lap times.

PCQ Round 6 Autocross Lakeside Park Driver Training Centre. Sunday 27 August 2017 saw PCQ go to the Lakeside Park DTC as part of the Lotus Club Qld ICC event. Linking our competition round with an ICC round has proved to be cost effective but for the first time this year, PCQ members have missed out due to the event being fully subscribed. Entries actually closed on the Wednesday prior to the event, thankfully, 17 of our members were able to enter in time.

Article by Kevin Vedelago, Motorsport Director

An Autocross is a non-sprint event, generally takes place on a highly technical course or track. Speeds generally to do exceed the legal speed limit, however, basic safety requirements are still considered necessary, helmet etc. The day commence with a Driver’s Briefing from the Lotus Club’s Daryl Wilson and then we into it. With a full field of 65 cars, it looked like it was going to be an hour and a half but to the credit of the organisers, that time was down to more like 75mins. This, of course, got less as the day went on. There was a total of 6 runs with the top honour going to Glen Wallace in his 991 GT3. Driver of the Round goes to John Datson. Just prior to the commencement of the event, one of his tyre valve was leaking…quickly. Without a spare tyre, most of us would have given the day away, but not John. He went back to town, found a Servo, replaced the valve. He then returned to Lakeside in time to complete all of his runs – well done. The faster time of the day was a blistering 45.775 sec by Stephen Foss in his Westfield.

accident to be bigger than on the road especially given that the car isn't insured when off the public highway, however Kevin was proud of the fact that there had been no accidents in the two years that he had been involved with the club as Motorsport Director. In my head I had rationalised this by remembering that everyone is going in the same direction, there are run off areas and you are running with cars of similar performance. Kevin was really supportive and he talked me through what I needed to do to get on track. The shortlist is register and pay for the event, register for a one day race licence, run through a comprehensive list of basic safety checks then turn up to the event. When at the track add a racing number that the track provides, unless you've brought your own, add a couple of other stickers to the car for battery and towing, screw in the towing eye just in case and don't forget a helmet. After a short safety briefing it was time to get out on track in the slower of the two Porsche groups that the club had arranged. Lining up in pitlane behind the faster cars was exciting before we crawled along to the end and hit the track. As the cars went out fastest first there was plenty of space between the cars to enjoy each of the 4 sessions of 4 hot laps plus in and out without worrying much about overtaking.

which I'm pleased with given that it's had a new set of rear tyres today – you can hear the driver excuses already............... We bought the car from Porsche Centre Brisbane in March this year and it is the first Porsche that we have ever owned. My wife Louise said that we had to buy a family car, needing to trade a Mazda RX8 which had been my weekend toy and it was her that increased our budget from looking at an Audi S Q5 level to this. Thanks Lou. Having owned some sporty cars in the past but never having done a track day in my own car, this new purchase was begging to be driven properly in the right environment. Driving quickly on the road is fine where safe but you're never going to get near the limits of this car anywhere other than on track and this outing provided a great opportunity to really push these limits. OK, so taking the Macan to the track is not every Macan owner's first thought as it's a bit like taking a knife to a gun fight. I think though that the Macan is more like a Swiss army knife, easily adapting from a quick and comfortable road car to a wannabe sports car at the flick of the Sports+ button. We joined Porsche QLD Club during September and booked into our first trackday at QLD Raceway after speaking with the Club Motorsport Director Kevin Vedelago who assured me that the Macan would not be out of its depth on track and that it was likely to be quicker than some of the older cars. We knew that there was a risk involved in taking $90k of car on to a track where elevated speeds are going to cause any 22

How did the Macan go? Well, it really can be hustled and ultimately handles like a supersized hot hatch. The brakes were awesome and the handling was superb, using the grip advantage of the 4WD system allowed power to go down early and cleanly keeping it clear of the following boxster, 928 and carerra 3.2. Nothing overheated and brakes didn't fade, the only visible damage was a little wear to the passenger side tyres these having been worked harder than the others on the clockwise circuit. All of the fellow Porsche Club members and the other drivers on the day were friendly, helpful and extremely happy to share the passion for their own cars. I would thoroughly recommend taking the opportunity to take your car to one of these well organised events to explore the limits of your car in a safe environment and I'm looking forward to the next challenge of a Khannacross next month. A quick trip down to Melbourne proved to be extremely informative and gave a fantastic insight into Porsche Cars Australia and the Melbourne dealership. Once again Pamela Ward outdid herself with organising and managing the event for us all, right from the pick up at the airport, even though the board with my name said Copper!! Not Cooper, it all went very smoothly once we made sure I really was the copper he was to pick up. We had an amazing conversation all the way into the hotel about his life and escape from Persia many years ago and how he came to live here in Australia and how lucky he was. Dinner was just beyond divine and the Pooley wine was exceptional. If you get to try some of these wines from Tasmania, John Pooley, Tasmania’s Porsche Club President, would be only too pleased to hear what you think as they are a winery with many award winning wines and in very high demand. Our meeting this time round, rather than being all club orientated and a little about the future direction of Porsche, was to see the transformation of the dealership in Melbourne which is the only other outside of Germany that is classified as a historic restoration centre, to learn about the different areas of PCA, meeting the staff in charge of the various portfolios within the company and information of the advancements and future models which may be coming in the near future (sorry no information available as it was very secret squirrel business!!), and upcoming major events for Porsche. The technical people were amazingly informative and excited about the current and future times with Porsche. Porsche Insurance is the way to go; they put quite an effort into securing the best insurance they can for their customers both finances for new and the extended

insurance policies. So much information to take in we needed a break for lunch, then meet a couple of new PCA staff members then discuss the club issues at hand. Last year there were many items bought up by the different club presidents but mostly we all had the same real issue and that was the retention of members and the information line to gather new members into the clubs. Porsche Cars Australia have followed this through by producing a generic Porsche flyer and information for prospective members to be handed out by the dealerships and some given to each of us also. Another issue was the universal attire for all Australian Porsche club members. This has taken some time to get off the ground and there are still ongoing issues with logos and finished product but these are near finalised and all should be good to go in the very near future. 2018 is Porsche’s 70th Birthday so there will be many celebrations. Porsche Germany has asked the dealerships to have a special day on the 9th of June along with the clubs in each Country to do something a little special to celebrate. The committee have started discussions on organising a special event to be held on the 9th June in the format of a Porsche gathering in a prominent area, a drive in convoy around some nice roads, quick dealership visit for snap shots and #tag to Germany, an overnight stay in a hotel with a black tie dinner which will include fundraising for a charity. I hope we can get more than 70 Porsche to the drive and dinner as would be nice to top Ferrari who got about 80 to their 70th this year. PCA will also be holding an event in the beginning of September in NSW to show case Porsche for its 70th Birthday. As more information comes to hand I will let everyone know and hopefully get a group together to travel down to Sydney for this. Other events are the Gran Prix Corporate area and trip to Phillip Island to drive the new models of Porsche, Pole position at Bathurst 12 hour and of course the ever popular Targa Tasmania Porsche Tour. I can thoroughly recommend this one!!. If interested in any of these check out PCAs’ page or contact me for more information and contacts

Mount Tambourine Sunday Drive

Not quite a cast of thousands but 14 Porches in a row made a spectacular sight on the drive up to Mt Tambourine and St Bernard’s Pub for a casual lunch. Club members, including a good proportion of new members, gathered at the Coffee Club in Browns Plains for a 10am start. After the previous day’s persistent rain the weather gods were smiling and provided perfect driving weather. It was great to see a Macan join in with a couple of 928’s, 944’s and the usual plethora of 911’s. One well know member brought along his as new, and new to him, 968. A very nice find but whilst it may be seen at the track I am not sure it will see too much time on it. After departing Browns Plains the very scenic route took us out through Park Ridge and Chambers Flat. The roads were uncluttered and we moved along at a very well mannered pace. Well done to our lead car. Venturing into new territory (for me) we travelled through Tabragalba and Wonglepong. Then onto Mt Tambourine road via Canungra. Mt Tamborine provides lots of twists and turns, plenty of hairpins and some stunning scenery.

No one got lost all everyone made it the final destination comfortably (they were in Porsches after all). Many thanks must go to our leader for the day Jason Johns, and to Greg for the planning and I believe that our President had a hand in our comprehensive drive notes. We met the beautiful namesake of the hotel an enormous, and somnolent, St. Bernard’s dog. The view from the hotel was lovely; the food and service were outstanding and only surpassed by the great company. Thanks for a delightful day.

the hairpin. No damage and he completed the day without further incident.

Although the rescheduled club sprint at Morgan Park clashed with this ICC round, we still managed to get five PCQ members to Mt Cotton. Having their first go at this picturesque and challenging track were Trent Humphries (2014 Cayman) and

John Samios (1985 3.2 Carrera). Long time lover of hillclimbs, Bruce Simpson travelled down from Noosa to give his 934 Replica another run at Mt Cotton after a few years absence. It was great to see Paul Dalitz return to motorsport in his 991 GT3 after being side lined since May 2016 when he suffered serious back problems at our QR sprint. My ailing ’69 911 suffering from the usual magnesium crankcase problems, managed to get another event under its belt.

on track by 9 o’clock. Bruce Simpson had brake failure on his first run resulting in an “off” at lovers leap and had to finish the lap using only the hand brake. The problem was found to be a leak from the banjo fitting on one of the front calipers. O n c e tightened and the b r a k e s bled, Bruce was back on track, missing only one run. John Samios on his first run of the day and first run at Mt Cotton, went exploring the in-field after over shooting

PCQ Round 7 – 30 September 2017 Sprint – Morgan Park, Warwick. Just prior to this event, South East Queensland was experiencing some incredibly hot days for this time of the year. Thankfully, by the Saturday, the temperature had dramatically cooled down to the point were the only way we could describe it is to say “it was perfect”. Thinking about the Sprint, it didn’t seem that long ago that we were last here. Of course, we were last at Morgan Park for the Round 5 and the ICC Round. This time, the track was all ours but I made the decision to invite some friends and I am glad we did because without them, we would have incurred quite a loss. We had a field of 46 drivers comprising 29 PCQ members and 17 members from Z Car Club and 86 Drivers Car Club. At the last minute, 4 drivers had to withdraw with car issues.

organising lunch for the drivers, officials and flag marshals. Personally, I think this was one of the best part of the day, the social interaction was great, almost to the point of “do we really have to go back out there?” At approx. 1:00pm, the afternoon session started on the E Circuit. This time the racing was closer with Greg Turnham, Steve Cooper and Chris Ching all in the 66’s. I am sure that Brett Wentworth would also have been there, not for a little car trouble which saw him retire for the day. I don’t like to focus on anything negative, particular with respect to “near misses” but I believe it is worth acknowledging the great effort of young Emily Cooper. Emily experienced something we all hope never happens, the throttle stuck!! And stuck it did, at full noise. Calm as you like, Emily put the car in neutral, brought it to a stop and turned off the engine, all without incident. Sadly, we know of another similar incident at QR that did not end this well. Again, well done Emily.

After the last event, I made a promise that I would streamlined the document check-in process. I am delighted to say that we were successful and all drivers had checked in prior to the driver briefing.

All year, a great tussle has developed between David Yould and Gary Taber, both in the Mid-Engine Class. After the first run, Gary’s car developed a cooling problem that resulted in that car’s retirement. In an incredible gesture of sportsmanship and friendship, David offered to share his car for the day with Gary. The driver’s briefing commenced, a little late at 8:35pm. And It is for this and this alone that I have no hesitation in declaring just prior to 9:00am the first run group “hit” the track. Well, that the driver of the round is David Yould. they hit more than just the track, Chris Ching in his 997 Club Car clipped a kangaroo as he approached the “T” intersection; As in July, we were able to wrap the day up with some Passenger thankfully both Chris and the kangaroo were okay. Rides and Happy Laps. We started with the K Circuit, or the “long” track as it is often referred to as. Just as in July, some blistering times were recorded on the new Morgan Park surface, the most impressive being Brett Wentworth with a 1:20.422 and next was Steve Cooper with a 1:20.690, only tenths of a second behind. Another notable result was Michael Treffene with a 1:24.914 on road tyres.

We had a great day, ended in a great way and was all made possible by the amazing support that the Motorsport Programme gets from the Cooper Family.

PCQ Round 8 14th October 2017 Our last sprint for the year saw PCQ Motorsport take two run groups in the QR Ipswich Street Sprints. With only a General Practice in the morning and wet weather looming; an early start was almost guaranteed. After what has become a “brief” driver’s briefing, Matt Ronke of QR called the first run group up just before 12:45pm. There was quite a bit of chatter in pit row about how many runs we would get prior to the arrival of the “wet stuff”. I noticed a few of our more Tech Savvy members looking at the BOM Radar and concluding that we had about an hour. I have no doubt that the forecast weather wet was the reason that there were only 25 entries. On the day, Eric Van Dyk had to put out with car troubles and Emily Cooper was not feeling well so that left only 23. One of the entries was from a new member Craig Nelson. A lot of interest and curiosity surrounded his entry and I did spot several drivers from our first run group head to the pit wall and watch, this writer included. Craig was driving a 2014 Porsche Macan S. This was the first time every that a Macan had participated in the PCQ Sprint Event. As a matter of interest, the average best lap time on the day (excluding Open Class) was 62.0390 seconds and Craig’s best time was a very impressive 65.4682 seconds. One needs to remember that this was also Craig’s first time at QR.

Shannons Insurance Queen St. Mall Display Shannons Insurance, one of our generous club sponsors, invited PCQ to be part of their annual Queen St Mall promotional display. Phil Ross from Shannons brought along his immaculate 996 Turbo and 911 SC. These were joined by the equally immaculate 997 GT3 RS and 1960 356 from the Cooper Collection. While the Shannons staff fielded questions on their extensive range of motor vehicle and home insurance policies, PCQ committee members were able to promote both the Club and Porsche. There was a steady stream of admirers of the cars on display with the 356 attracting by far the most attention particularly from many elderly car enthu-

Many overseas tourists were interested in the club, the events we hold and many were give copies of our club magazine to take back to Porsche enthusiasts in their home countries. Lee had a lengthy chat with a member of Porsche Club Norway, who owes a 993 and lamented the 80 kph speed limits enforced on Norwegian roads. The “Mall Locals made it a very entertaining day and our thanks go to Phil from Shannons and Peter from Queen St Mall Management for allowing PCQ to be part of the day. by Bill Black

orsche Club Qld was well represented at the recent Australian Hillclimb Championships with three members competing at the Mt Cotton circuit. The Championships are held in a different state each year, coming to Qld once every six years. The 3 day event attracted entrants from all parts of the country with the best hillclimb cars and drivers aiming to take out a national title. Friday was practice day and the competition taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Our most successful club member was James Austin driving his 996 GT3. Competing in the Marque Sports Car over 3 litre class, James struggled on Saturday to get a mistake free Lap in. He was having difficulty getting back to first gear at "The Nuts" hairpin and kept engaging third instead". This cost him valuable lap time and found himself third in class at the end of Saturday's competition. On his second run on Sunday, James finally got the gear changes sorted and recorded a lap time of 45.45 seconds breaking the official class lap record. On his final run of the day James lowered the lap record further with a very impressive 45.15 seconds. Although this was good enough for James to become the Australian Hillclimb Champion for Marque Sports Car over 3 litres, he could not match his 44.93 set earlier in the year at the club hill-climb day. Also competing was Bill Black and his 1969, 911 in the Marque Sports Cars 2 - 3 litre class. Back in June at the Qld Hill-climb Championships, Bill won the class and broke the 5 year old class lap record held by Jon Siddins and went into the Australian Hill-climb Championships holding the class lap record at 47.06 seconds. Although Bill managed a PB of 46.72 seconds, this was no match for Jon and his Datsun 2402, reclaiming the class lap record with a very impressive 45.60. The Club's third competitor was Greg Turnham driving his 2.5 litre VW Beetle, which did not meet the CAMS regulations for lmproved Production Class and ended up in a class that included a number of Subaru WRX's, a Nissan R32 38

GTR and the eventual winner of the class, a Datsun 240Z four wheel drive with a 6 litre Chev motor, rumoured at 800 horse power that recorded a 42.82. Greg recorded a PB with a 47.20 lap time in the green Beetle.

PORSCHE CLUB QLD CONCOUR AND SHOW N SHINE DAY Sponsored by Prestige Automotive Care and Shannons Insurance At Harrigans Drift Inn Calypso Bay. Well, what can I say other than what an amazing turnout for our annual Concour event held this year at the grounds around Harrigans at Calypso Bay. At over 70 cars attending during the day we made quite an impact with many locals coming down to check out the cars. Having the amenities at hand was certainly a great social draw card bringing many cars out I have not seen for a number of years. The older 911 category had the largest number of cars with some absolutely stunning examples, prepared and displayed with pride, making it extremely difficult for the judges. I would like to thank Sam from Prestige Automotive Care for sponsoring the trophies for this event, PCA and Germany for the bags and most of the goodies inside and Shannons insurance for sponsoring the peoples choice which I might add was hotly contended. The two cars at the top of the list were the RWB car of Jason Arnold and the gorgeous Red 912 Coupe of Andrew Volp with Jason winning by just 1 vote. The peoples choice was very well supported with only a few cars with one vote and quite a number with 3, 4 and 5 votes and a couple with more. Thank you to everyone who attended, maybe next year we will ask for the wind to be turned down a little but other than that it was a great success. Finally thank you to the judges who gave up an enormous part of the day to judge the cars under difficult conditions and to Grace Sorenson and Wagner Higgins for all your help at the club tent. The judging format will also change a little for next year, the judges this year all felt that the criteria was a little too harsh and long winded so the scoring and judging will be modified with one set of judges to do the top placed number of cars for the car of the day. These will be posted on the club website under the members only section and process for cleaning and care made available more so than this year. We did split a couple of the categories this year to early bumper 65-73, 911 74 onwards as these were the largest of the categories and much fairer.

the new Porsche 911 Carrera T Australia. Porsche is reviving the totally pure concept behind the heralded 911 T of 1968 with the new 911 Carrera T. In Porsche parlance the ‘T’ stands for Touring and in this case it is mostly about less weight, a manual gearbox with shorter ratios, rear wheel drive and a mechanical differential lock for enhanced performance as well as more intense driving fun. The unique appearance of the new generation 911 Carrera T is based on the 911 Carrera with its engine delivering 272 kW (370 hp). It also has extra features as standard, including: PASM chassis now with a 20 mm lower ride height, optimised Sport Chrono Package, a shortened shift throw with red shift pattern and Sport-Tex seat centres. All new aspects of the 911 Carrera T are designed to optimise sportiness and reduce weight: The rear window and rear side windows are made from lightweight glass and the door trims feature opening pull loops instead of handles. Noise suppression materials are largely reduced, rear seats have been removed and deleting the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is also possible. The result: At an unladen weight of 1,425 kilograms 911 Carrera T is 20 kgs lighter than a 911 Carrera with comparable equipment. Porsche Australia

Targa Great Barrier Reef Iconic car rally is coming to Tropical North Queensland Tropical North Queensland will host a new major tourism event for the next three years with the launch of Targa Great Barrier Reef, a three-day car rally that will see the field of around 200 cars visit all key regions, including Port Douglas, Innisfail and the Atherton Tablelands. The new event, to be based in Cairns from 31 August to 2 September next year, is modelled on the world's largest tarmac rally, Targa Tasmania, which has been held annually on the Apple Isle since making its debut in 1992. Targa Great Barrier Reef will be a round of the four event CAMS Australian Targa Championship, which also includes Targa North West, Targa Tasmania, and Targa High Country in Victoria. The extension of the series into Queensland was made possible through a three-year funding deal by Tourism & Events Queensland and Cairns Regional Council with series organiser, Targa Australia. The two hundred cars expected to take part in the 2018 event will represent a cavalcade of motoring history from pre-war classics right through to the latest exotic supercars. The cars will tackle 15 stages across more than 200 competitive kilometres on a course that covers more than 800 kilometres across Tropical North Queensland. The event will start and finish each day in Cairns, with a Super Street Stage on the Saturday night bringing the action right into the heart of the city. Cairns will also host Targafest, where the cars are on display for fans to see close up, while regional towns will host a lunch stop each day which will see various local charities supported. Underlining the scale of the event is the fact that more than 500 local officials and various community groups will be involved in its successful running. Targa Australia Director, Mark Perry, is excited with the expansion of the championship. "The secret to the long-term success of Targa Tasmania is that it is a tourism destination event built around a passion for the motor vehicle," Perry said. "It attracts people and their cars from right around Australia, and overseas. It's a format that sees the event travel to the fans, stopping at a number of towns along the way, meaning it's not just one town or one city that is the winner and our `stadium' covers thousands of square kilometres of iconic landscapes that will showcase the region to the world. "Targa is renowned for showcasing and bringing awareness to many of Australia's iconic and important World Heritage Areas through its TV Specials, broadcast around the world, and will continue to do so with Targa Great Barrier Reef in highlighting the beauty and importance of preserving the Tropical North Queensland region." "Targa Tasmania attracts some beautiful cars from across the eras, and I'm sure many of those competitors will be drawn to this new event and others will enter now they have an event closer to home, along with also tapping into the lucrative Asian market due to the ease of travelling to Cairns." "Being part of a national championship will ensure all the top cars and factory teams are present, and they boast some

incredible automotive pedigree and some absolutely awesome drivers." Queensland Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones said she couldn't wait to see Targa kick off in North Queensland. "With the backdrop of the Great Barrier Reef, this race will be an attractive proposition to Targa teams around the world," she said. "To have such an iconic sporting experience so close to one of Queensland's most important natural assets will create a wonderful experience for teams and racegoers. "Events like this deliver a valuable boost to the Tropical North Queensland economy – helping to attract visitors and support local jobs. "I look forward to Targa becoming a permanent fixture on Queensland's It's Live! Event Calendar." Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said Targa was an ideal fit for the region's ever-growing sports event calendar. "Targa Great Barrier Reef will not only be great for Cairns, but fantastic for our region," Cr Manning said. "Major events play an important role in promoting our destination, driving visitation, supporting jobs and fostering community pride. "This is an iconic car race which will be set against an iconic backdrop – it is the perfection combination. We have a reputation of facilitating world-class events, and this will be no different." Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Pip Close said Targa Great Barrier Reef would showcase Cairns, Port Douglas, the Atherton Tablelands and the Cassowary Coast to a new audience around the world. "We are seeing increasing numbers of Asian competitors at events like Ironman Asia-Pacific and the Great Barrier Reef Marathon and this event will further appeal to these markets," she said. "With new flights from China in December added to our direct connections from Singapore and Japan we have the opportunity to further grow Tropical North Queensland as an international sports event destination."
