Welcome to the first club magazine edition for 2014. As I pen this Prose, the Committee is in the middle of preparations for our themed PCQ Christmas party and awards night, while simultaneously mapping out our track day calendar options and social events for 2014. Before getting into the details of the 2014 calendar, I would like to begin by passing on sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Edwards family following the recent tragic loss of Sean at Queensland Raceway. The accident also involved club member Will Holzheimer (who is well known within the club), who is now slowly recovering in hospital. Our thoughts are with Will and the entire Holzheimer family and on behalf of all PCQ members, we wish Will all the very, very best on his road to a full recovery. Next year is our clubs 40th anniversary and as such, we are currently putting together a worthy celebration. Initial plans involve a weekend on the Sunshine Coast staying in the Noosa area and holding a range of activities, both social and motorsport. More details will be broadcast as we lock down specifics, but we have held discussions with local Council and tourist bodies on PCQ participating in the rarely held Noosa Hill Climb. This event is only opened to Motorsport enthusiast twice a year and may form part of our 2014 PCQ championship and could morph into an annual PCQ club round. We also plan on entering a regularity class for interested PCQ members. As you may have been aware, for a number of years, the PCQ committee has been endeavouring to keep our club active in monthly track days, while also trying to balance the associated track day costs against entry fees. It’s not a battle we are winning against the rising costs imposed on PCQ by the respective tracks; be that Morgan Park where for the privilege of parking our Porsches under a tin roof over two days cost PCQ around $4,200.00! Yes, $4,200.00 for thirty pretty ordinary parking bays. This cost of course has to be passed on to club members. Outrageous did I hear you say? The reality is that PCQ throughout the last few years has subsidized the majority of our track days and not passed on all of the many associated costs. All this is done to give the 100 or so PCQ members who take to the track throughout the year, a chance to enjoy their Porsches track side, in a legal, safe, semi-competitive environment. For the 2014 season, Queensland Raceway, including Lakeside, has changed the cost model for PCQ, lifting the costs significantly. What this means is that based on our current competitor numbers, a rise in entry fees of around 100% to $400.00 for a full track day will be required. Or, as another option, we could
6
PORSCHE
NEWS
open the track days to more PCQ members interested in other run group options. This may include a more prominent PCQ Regularity Championship, where members can simply dial in what they believe to be an achievable consistent lap time and over 5 laps, the closest to the nominated time of each lap basically wins the points. Not outright speed. We formed a working subcommittee at our November 2013 PCQ night at Porsche Centre Brisbane to review our future Motorsport activities. To start the process, I forwarded a submission for consideration of the subcommittee and I encourage all PCQ members to play a part in this process by submitting your motorsport recommendations and any positive changes you would like to see occur in 2014 and beyond. The full committee is behind this overdue review. One of the suggestions I have put forward, is to include the hugely popular style of motorsport around the world called ‘Autocross’ in our 2014 motorsport calendar. Autocross is a safe format, undertaken in large, open tarmac areas around witches hats and chalk lines, where speeds are contained. The benefit is that the events are a bit easier on both the car and the driver, with the format focussing more on handling and car control and is limited to 2nd and 3rd gears. It is ideal for all Porsches and indeed, I saw Terry Knight come third in such an event at Mount Cotton in a dealership Cayenne. This was held in a separate large car park area at the driving school, not at the neighbouring Mt Cotton Hill Climb. May I suggest that you Google ‹Autocross’ to see videos from around the globe on this style of event.
Another consideration for the newly formed subcommittee is to piggy-back on other events trackside, to defray our PCQ track day costs. Take the Shannon’s event at QR that we supported mid-2013 as an example. PCQ simply purchased a number of run groups in advance, at no loss of enjoyment for our club competitors. Add to this mix the subject of track day safety and any changes we need to make for 2014 and you can see the subcommittee certainly has its work cut out. Ian Gall, who is replacing Richard Walker as Motorsport Director in 2014, is heading this subcommittee and is expected to table a report on the way forward in January 2014 for the full committee to review. In summary, we look forward to getting more of our members participating in a broader mix of track day events in 2014. As you have read, motorsport dominates this Presidents Prose. It is a substantial cost commitment, time commitment and emotional commitment that we take on as a club. May I also say that it›s a passionate area of our club and as we have witnessed, potentially very dangerous. We have to get the mix right for all of our 500 members. If only our Motorsport days were as easy as our social days to get right. Maybe one day we will get there. Thank you Richard for your assistance with the Motorsport over the last few years and get well soon Will. On behalf of the committee, I wish all PCQ members, friends and families a safe and relaxing Christmas break.
“To everyone who has sent their kind thoughts, best wishes, flowers, cards and gifts for William’s recovery, the Holzheimer family wants you to know that these gestures have been much appreciated.” David Holzeimer

EDITORS NOTES
Well, here we are coming up to the end of another year for the magazine. It’s been great year and one that has seen a significant step forward in the quality of the production of the magazine, thanks to both the introduction of our new production company (Composite Colour) with their vastly improved production technique and the excellent work by done by our new magazine Production Assistant, Rachel Place. However, what really makes this a great magazine is the quality of the articles that are submitted by our own club members and this year has been fantastic. There are too many to contributors to mention here, but I would like to thank everyone who has provided material for
the magazine this year, your contributions have been greatly appreciated. As Dave mentioned in his Prose, next year will be the 40th anniversary of our club and as such I’d like to run some article to mark this great achievement. So if anyone has photos from those early years, copies of magazines, newsletters or any other artefacts from that time, please contact me (editor@porsche-qld. org.au). I will also be approaching some of our earliest members to do profiles on them and their life with the club.
in many ways, but it has proven to have highlighted some challenges as well, as there has no doubt been at other times this club’s 40 year lifetime. I have confidence that the Committee and our members will overcome the hurdles that we currently face regarding event attendances and that 2014 will be another great year for our club. I hope everyone has a very happy and safe festive season and I look forward to having a great 2014 with you all!
This year has been a great year for the club

He was very well travelled and also enjoyed golf, fishing, tennis, and following the Hawks in AFL. John loved working with wood and made almost all the furniture for his home, but his greatest pleasure came from restoring his Porsche 924. It took many years and countless paint and fabric matches but sadly ill health took over, the project came to an end, and the Porsche was sold. John is survived by two sisters, six nieces and nephews, nine great nieces and nephews and one great great niece. In saying goodbye to John we have all lost both a gentleman and a gentle man.”

Congratulations to all who participated in this years track events and a big thank you to everyone that helped out with the running of each event. Thanks also goes to those who took part in the motorsport sub-committee; Eric van Dyk, Phil Hart, Rod McCray, David Tilbury, George Foessel, Ben Foessel and Jeff Neale and a special acknowledgement goes to Eric for collating track times and assisting with championship points. I would also like to thank the Porsche Club committee for all their support; everyone was accommodating and a pleasure to work with. I would like to thank the CAMS officials, Bill Campbell (Morgan Park) John Tetley (Queensland Raceway, Lakeside) and MG Car Club (Mt Cotton). Thank you to everyone for making it a memorable year as Motorsport Director. When walking around the cars in pit lane on track days, I overheard many conversations. One that sparked my interest, mainly because I believe it will change the way PCQ does motorsport in the future is the cost. I can almost see the look on everyone’s face. It’s a little like when you splash water in your own face from holding a cup under the tap and turn it on too fast. And I can still hear the comments thrown around the pits “Its club members money being spent on club members doing what they love, so what’s the problem?” We all look at each other with the look of agreement (as we are the ones’ enjoying it). Then the next comment is, “We have over a $100,000 in the bank now”. Then the oldies reminisce, “I remember the days when we had $4,000 in the bank and nobody thought anything of spending it. Now we have all this money, I can’t see what’s the big deal.” Good question, I hope I can help. The ever-increasing demand on the track days, with new makes of cars, new categories and more drivers, pushes the demand for track time and costs up. We all understand and would agree that you can’t run track days at a loss. Changes need to be made to accommodate. With the ever-increasing change to motorsport in Australia, PCQ is faced with adapting to these changes. For example, track hire is not just the cost of hiring the track; it also includes catering, garage hire, medical representatives, tow truck/tilt tray hire and operating costs. Not to forget the enormous amount of volunteer man-hours making each event possible. In 2013, the PCQ Motorsport calendar started in February at Lakeside with an absolutely beautiful sunny day. Then it took us out West for a day in the country at Morgan Park. This was
8

scheduled prior to Easter for those travelling to join Porsche Club NSW at Bathurst. In April, PCQ went to Queensland Raceway for sprints and the first motorkhana for the year. Then it was back down to NSW in May for a world first, Porsche Australia’s Rennsport at Eastern Creek. In June for the first time, PCQ championship Round 5 was held as a multi-car event, the Shannon’s Nationals. This was the first time members participated at the Shannons’ “Two Days of Thunder” as a PCQ club championship points round. This allowed for sharing of track hire expenses with other clubs to reduce overall expenditure. Prior to this, members could join in the day with the Porsche invitation only. Norwell unfortunately, was cancelled as the track informed PCQ of new noise restrictions, knocking out most of the field (without resorting to muffler modifications). The motorsport calendar wouldn’t be complete without Round 6, the HillClimb at Mt Cotton. This was followed by a return to Queensland Raceway in September for a combined Motorkhana and Sprint. Motorkhanas were all held at QR this year, as the cost was included in track hire for PCQ Sprints. Round 10, was cancelled in October as track staff were indisposed. So no Lakeside, sorry Lakeside is one of my favorite tracks too. We will visit Lakeside early next year. The final rounds 11 and 12 were held at Morgan Park, with sprints on the long and short track and regularity rounding up the last track meet for the year. I have been working closely with Ian Gall for the last two months on next year’s calendar and will be handing over the running of Motorsport. We have been focusing on improving driver ability and providing skill development in a fun and friendly atmosphere. In this way, we hope to help and encourage club members to explore all that there Porsche has to offer, in a safe and fun way. I’m sure Ian will do a great job and lead Motorsports into a bright and new future. I can see that in the future, PCQ track days will require the drivers to have proven ability before they are allowed on the track. Those that came to Morgan Park were given the opportunity to have proven ability assessed under the guidance of a professional driving instructor. CAMS are now playing a bigger roll on track days, performing scrutineering on all cars, with a special focus on personal protective equipment.
TOWER
The format for sprint days has and will change more in the future, with the focus on driver ability and training. We all agree that providing an opportunity for those that don’t normally come out to the track to participate in a nonaggressive, friendly introduction is how should be done. This approach was started at the last round for PCQ this year at Morgan Park. The first half of the day was dedicated to welcoming new drivers. It was good to see a couple of the boys come up from Sydney to join us. It was great to get away for the weekend and what better way to do it, than to take the Porsche out to the track with your mates. The morning session was open to new drivers for training, with a professional driving instructor giving a lecture on car handling and driver ability. Seasoned club day drivers mentored those new to the track by giving tips on how to get the best out of the day. The rest of the weekend was sprints and regularity. I have found that this year my beloved Porsche spent most of it’s time in the garage, almost all of my racing time was taken up by my duties as Motor Sport Director. When Emma and I were asked to help out with Motorsports, we decided to give it a year to stabilize the calendar and then hand it over to the next Director. Now that Ian has stepped up, this will allow me to focus on my racing. Signing off… Happy Motor Racing and stay safe!. Richard Walker Motor Sport Director

2013 Wild West Christmas Party & motorsports Awards Night By Sheldon Arkinstall
This year’s Christmas Party and Motorsports Awards night was themed “Wild, Wild West!” and proved to be an absolutely wild night! The numbers for the night were down a bit on last year, but those who attended more than made up for the lower numbers and everyone had an enormously fun night (just look at the smiles on the faces of those captured in photos over the next couple of pages!). As can be seen, a lot of people had gone to great lengths to find some excellent costumes that included the obligatory Cowboys, Indians

and Call Girls, but also a good mixture of rowdy, moustachioed Mexicans, various Gringos, Sheriffs, a Zorro and a Lone Ranger. Adding to the western theme, there was also a mechanical bull in attendance that proved to be very popular; even more so as the night progressed and the liquid refreshments started to ‘kick-in’. The bull was the winner on the night as evidenced by a lot of very short rides (much to the amusement of the sizeable crowd), but the even longest rides were only in the order of 25-30 seconds!
The night was also dedicated to the announcement and presentation of awards for the 2013 Motorsport Championship. This year’s overall motorsport champion was again Bill Black; so a big “congratulations” goes out to Bill on his achievement. A full list of the awards and pictures of the various winners follows this article. Well, that was the Christmas party and awards night for another year. If you think the photos show that it was a fantastic and fun night, then make sure to come along to next year’s event!

CLUB NIGHTS
By Sheldon Arkinstall
October - Gold Coast Porsche Centre Gold Coast welcomed the club with friendly smiles, food, drinks and the oppurtunity to win a full Porsche Paint Rejuvenation and Interior Detailing Package. As a teazer for the prize a demonstration of the products kept quite a few enthusiasts entertained. The prize was won by Graham Taylor who has kindly included an article in this magazine.
November The November meeting was back at our usual venue at Porsche Centre Brisbane. Although there was no official guest speaker, there was a strong attendance for the night and the usual assortment of food and drinks was available. Two new members were in attendance on the night and both Anthony and Blake were warmly welcomed into the club.

A Porsche Project Story Story and Photos by Ian Gall
Browsing through the Market Place of the Porsche Club magazine a couple of years ago, I saw an ad for a “project”, which included a rolling chassis and various parts. The phone number appeared to be close by and turned out to be only 20klm away. So I thought “worth a look”, as I already had one early Porsche and thought that worst case scenario would be spares for it.
The decision was then made to re-build it and the search began for the missing parts, and as all those who have done this would know, there is always a LOT missing from these barn finds “projects”. The short version is that Ebay and various Porsche wreckers around Australia and the world provided the missing bits and I became close friends with the local courier company drivers.
A phone call later and I was on my way to investigate, the car turned out to be a ‘77 911 (the same as the one I had) from the US that had been brought in to be made into a track car. The conversion to right-hand drive had been done, but the partnership had broken up and the car had been left in various sheds for 15 years in the hope that one day the owner would finish it. The “project” consisted of the shell, a fiberglass wide body kit (some of which was on the car), various bits and pieces, a 3.2 engine, 915 gearbox, 930 front brakes and front suspension, a couple of Momo race seats, new Simmons wheels and tires (well new 15 years ago) and of course, the all important import papers. The price was “offers”, the engine had a couple of injectors missing and various holes had wasp nests in them, so I made an offer which was subsequently rejected! So, it was off home to do some more research. I then decided to increase my offer to $8,000 and after some deliberation on the owner’s part; I was now the proud owner!
After much searching I found a local body builder who knew his stuff and was himself a 930 owner. So the car went in to have all the panels fitted, dents removed, etc. The car came back four months later ready for paint, again after much searching, a painter was found in the local area and off it went on the trailer to be sprayed. It was returned two months later looking good and ready for the mechanicals. By this time, I had sourced all the missing pieces and with my wallet somewhat lighter. I put all the esentials into the car; the motor and gearbox, fuel tank, suspension, glass, and seats and then rang Don Munro. Don had worked his magic on my other car and I new that when it came back, it would be done “right first time”. So back on the trailer and off to Don.
Home it came on a tilt tray, with several milk crates of “bits” and the fun began. It was soon obvious that it was a bit of a find, no rust, some minor Californian hail damage, but a very straight body that appeared to have done low kilometres. The car was stripped and cleaned and a Super Cheap bore scope revealed the interior of the engine was ok. A vacuum cleaner and a piece of tubing soon removed the beasties from inside the engine and it was cleaned up and sealed; same for the gearbox.
18
PORSCHE

The car was rewired, the gearbox overhauled, the suspension upgraded and sorted for introductry track work, a nice loud muffler and power pipe were fitted and various other issues worked through. The engine was started and after 15 years, it fired-up the first time and when the smoke finally cleared, it was declared “a gem”! It was then off to Queensland Transport to have the car registered for the drive home . Several track days and general driving followed, with the car being given the thumbs up by all who saw it. But alas, I had been bitten by the “track bug” and as it appeared that I had some talent left after years away from a track, I decided that I needed more “killer wasps” under the bonet…. or is it boot? Unwittingly, I had mentioned to Don that I was looking for

a 3.6 and the phone call came a couple of days later that he had one for the right money and then the fun began in earnest! We were now getting into serious money and I remembered seeing an add from a club member who was selling his car saying “a gentleman should only have the number of Porsches he can afford,” so reluctantly, my other 911 was sold to fund the ‘project’. The 3.6 engine was stripped, as there was some evidence of moisture in one of the heads, so the oportunity was taken to ceramic coat all the vital bits and then to rebuild the top end (no small job) and stick in some RS cams. A limited slip diff was then fitted, a half cage installed, the suspension was upgraded again, all fully adjustable with new Bilstein shocks all round, the mandatory large front cooler and nose cone and finally, some Fabspeed headers and pipes. I was keen to put in a performance chip and at Don’s suggestion, we went for a Uni chip. The car was to remain road registered, so some creature comforts were left in such as sound deadining trim, radio, heater, etc.

Finally it was off to the tuners and a whopping 304hp at the rear wheels was achieved, which surprised even Don and crucialy, was more than his own car! Weight in race trim is around 1,050kg. The car is a dream to drive, though a little noisy on the road, with both outlets at the back open, although blocking one off eliminates this problem for longer trips. On the track, the car is a credit to Don’s work and expertise, the handling is ideal, the power is more than adequate and the car is quite capable of running some very quick times, while remaining reliable and easy to drive for everyday use. Cost? Don’t ask? Was it worth it? Absolutely, the car turns heads where ever it goes and I doubt there are many cars that provide the same fun factor. Would I do it again? Everything is for sale!
Porsche Police Panamera Co-operation
NSW Police Force continues with Porsche Community engagement Panamera a huge success Australia. Porsche Cars Australia (PCA) and the NSW Police Force have jointly elected to continue the Force’s community engagement programme well into 2014. The trial, which began 12 months ago year when Porsche loaned a Panamera to the NSW Police to use as a means to engage the community, has been so successful both organisations see merit in continuing the programme for a further 12 months – this time with Porsche loaning the latest Panamera 4S, featuring a twin turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine and all-wheel drive. To signal the renewed co-operation the new

Police Panamera has fresh new markings, the result of a NSW Police Force facebook ‘Design a Police Porsche‘ competition which received more than 40,000 hits and 200 entries from around the country. The new design is bolder and designed to give the Porsche sedan more street cred and presence on the road. The 12 months of the previous specially marked Police Panamera saw it attend more than 50 community events as well as dozens of primary schools as part of the NSW Police Force’s community engagement strategy. The car is run and operated out of NSW Police Force’s Harbourside Local Area Command but shared with other Commands. Costs and maintenance of the car is covered by Porsche. Press Information “The Porsche police car turns heads and generates fascination, which is exactly what it is designed to do so it can allow us to begin dialogue with the
community and discuss issues surrounding community welfare,” says NSW Police Force Superintendent Alan Sicard. “We have a strong presence on social media and to date we’ve had some 700,000 hits on our facebook page directly related to the Porsche”. For PCA, the association with the NSW Police Force is a key element of its ‘Corporate Social Responsibility‘ strategy where Porsche actively supports carefully selected causes. PCA’s main CSR activity is with the Lighthouse Foundation – a Victorian based not-for-profit organisation committed to ending youth homelessness.

PORSCHE The Porsche Panamera Turbo S
Performance and luxury for discerning drivers Australia. Porsche is placing its fastest, most powerful and most luxurious Panamera at the peak of its Gran Turismo series: With a power output of 570 bhp and a top speed of 310 km/h plus a particularly extensive and topquality range of features, the Panamera Turbo S is guaranteed a special status in its market segment. The sporty, luxurious character of the new Panamera Turbo S is evident not only in its driving performance but also in the key distinguishing features of its appearance. The new metallic exterior colour ‘Palladium’ which is available solely for the new Panamera Turbo S, gives the top model an especially exclusive look and enhances the classy, elegant contours. An indication of the vehicle’s outstanding driving dynamics is provided by the 20-inch 911 Turbo II wheels, which are not only larger but also significantly wider than the standard wheels belonging to other Gran Turismo models. The four-way rear spoiler, painted in the same colour as the exterior, is another unique feature. The new top Panamera model from Porsche

features an exceptionally extensive range of equipment appropriate for a top model in the luxury class. It features all of the driving dynamics control systems available for the model range as standard. The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) - an active roll stabilisation system - starts reducing the vehicle’s lateral inclination as it approaches bends, thereby increasing agility and comfort in equal measure. The Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) system works with a variable standard torque split at the rear wheels, in combination with an electronically controlled rear-axle differential lock to provide improved traction in any driving situation. Thanks to the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB), the Panamera Turbo S benefits from a highperformance brake system that is particularly resistant to brake fading and wear. The speedsensitive Power Steering Plus represents the steering system. The chassis of the Panamera Turbo S of course features the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adaptive damper control and adaptive air suspension with additional air volume. Some 50 bhp more power thanks to new turbochargers and a higher injection pressure
A 50-bhp increase in power compared to the Panamera Turbo engine has been achieved through specific revision work on a number of components. Porsche is now using two new turbochargers with larger compressors in the Panamera Turbo S model. The new compressors increase the air flow and the charger injects more oxygen into the combustion chambers at high loads and speeds. In addition, the injection pressure has been increased by 20 bar to 140 bar. Together, both of these measures also enable higher component loads, which are absorbed by pistons made from a new aluminium alloy and specially coated piston rings. This concept has two further advantages: By preparing the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chambers more effectively, the torque also increases by 50 Nm to 750 Nm at between 2250 and 5000 rpm, with the overboost increasing to 800 Nm. For instance, the extra torque makes overtaking even easier and faster. The second enhancement is the fact that the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) fuel consumption figures for the new model are the same as those of the Panamera Turbo at 10.2 litres per 100 km, which is more than 11% less than the predecessor model.
Thanks to the optional sports exhaust system, the Panamera Turbo S offers drivers the opportunity to revel in the sound of motorsport whenever they wish. This unique sound experience is achieved by means of an acoustic channel that can be switched at the push of a button; this channel directs the engine sound straight into the interior. In addition, individual cylinders are skipped when switching up a gear, allowing the engine speed to fall faster and the clutch to engage quickly. Sport Chrono package enhances sporty handling characteristics The new Panamera Turbo S is also perfectly equipped to effectively convert its increased level of power and torque into sporty driving dynamics. One of the requirements for this effective conversion of power is the optimum power transmission concept, which the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) allwheel drive system offers in the ideal format, even in difficult driving conditions. The Sport Chrono package comes as standard, and coordinates the drive power and chassis at the touch of a button to guarantee a consistently sporty response. What’s more, the overboost function is activated in “Sport” and “Sport Plus” mode as well as during kickdown in “Normal” mode. This function also temporarily increases the boost pressure to enable even more powerful acceleration and sprint capability. The “Launch Control” race start function guarantees the best possible acceleration when moving off by optimally co-ordinating the responses of the engine control system and the Porsche Doppelkupplung gearshift programme. Thanks to the reworked gear shifting strategy the Porsche Doppelkupplung changes between its seven gears even more rapidly, accelerating the new Gran Turismo top model from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
adaptive air suspension and adaptive damper control. The PASM continuously adjusts the damper forces and adapts them to suit road conditions and driving style. Using the PASM chassis button on the centre console, the driver can choose between three performance maps – Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. Similarly, the adaptive air suspension offers the ability to activate different spring rates to open up an even greater range of chassis characteristics, giving drivers the choice between a very high level of driving comfort and very sporty driving dynamics. The combination of the PDCC and PTV Plus means that the Panamera Turbo S features the most advanced version of the Panamera chassis as standard. The PDCC prevents the vehicle body from rolling on its longitudinal axis by applying a counter torque using active stabilisers on the front and rear axles. This system also improves vehicle balance via dynamic roll moment distribution, resulting in excellent agility in every speed range driven, as well as optimum steering performance and balanced load alteration behaviour. Increased agility is achieved because the tyres constantly maintain the ideal position on the road, allowing optimised lateral forces to build up and act upon each tyre. Variable roll moment distribution also directly influences the vehicle’s self-steering properties. The PDCC, PASM and air suspension are always controlled together when one of the three chassis programmes is selected. When the “Comfort” setting is selected, the systems provide a relaxed journey on uneven roads. In “Sport” and “Sport plus” mode, active intervention by the systems influence steering behaviour, maximum roll support, self-steering properties and traction in order to secure maximum performance and agility.
traction for a sporty driving experience. The Panamera Turbo S comes with the PCCB as standard. These super powerful, race-tested ceramic brakes with yellow brake callipers offer clear advantages over conventional grey cast iron brake discs. A reduction in mass of approximately 50%, a faster handling response and the corrosion resistance of the brake calliper rings guarantee maximum performance. Interior: Two-tone-leather comfort seats

The synthesis between exclusivity and sportiness is upheld in the interior by the two-tone leather furnishings, which come as standard. The new decor includes a hint of red providing a slightly cooler effect, and a highlight of this new interior package is its colour – Dark Burl Walnut. The 14-way power seats with memory package at the front are available as standard, together with front and rear seat ventilation. The memory package comprises seat surface extension as well as lumbar support and electrical steering column adjustment. The optional adaptive sport seats build on this seating system to include raised seat side bolsters and electronic 18-way adjustment in Alcantara leather. At the rear, two single seats with a folding central arm rest offer generous leg and head room, even for tall passengers. Both rear passengers are protected by side air bags. A Different Location, A Different World Story and Photos by Rod McCray
Some of our members have been jetting off to exotic places around the world on business and getting to play at the ‘Ring’ and other places of motor sport envy. I on the other hand, left the ‘Land of OZ’ for a slightly different location. The day after the Leyburn Sprints, I was on my way to Papua New Guinea! Lucky for me it’s Winter and it’s only 32°Celcius up there in Port Moresby…with 80% humidity. Port Moresby has been classified as one of the most dangerous cities in the world; you cannot even leave your hotel without a guard. Every building in Port Moresby is surrounded by barbed wire topped fences. This is my fourth trip there in the last 12 months; the first trip was a real eye opener.
water or food available at the airport, so if you don’t bring any, too bad. Tari is the capitol of Hela Province in the Central Highlands and is the only town for several hundred square kilometres. It is situated 5,200 feet above sea level and has average temperatures between 22°C and 24°C, with 70% humidity. They have a Wet season that lasts nine months, which is split in 2 parts and a dry season for the remaining three months, but in reality, if it’s not raining that day, then it’s classified as part of the dry season. I haven’t seen the sun for the past 4 days, as it’s been
Tari and its surrounds are known to be the most dangerous place in PNG. We were met at the airport by armed guards and transported to the LNG plant in lightly armoured vehicles. The fastest we can travel on these roads is 60km/h, any faster and the vehicle is likely to slide off the road and down a steep mountain side.
foggy, with intermittent showers and then heavy rain.
The Airport has an interesting no-frills approach. It consists of a tin shed for check-in, then you proceed outside to a round, thatched building with dirt floors, this is the departure lounge. If it rains, you get wet. Due to the Airport being “visual” landing only, it is not uncommon for the plane to be several hours late, not arrive or depart at all. The average rainfall here is 2.5 metres per year….so it rains a lot. There is no
The Camp site itself is interesting. It’s about 25 hectares and is surrounded by a 10 foot, razor wire topped fence and houses 2,500 men. The whole site encompasses 500 hectares and is surrounded by a 20 foot high razor wire topped fence. We are not allowed to leave the site without an armed guard and must travel in a security vehicle. Also, to make things even more interesting, on my last trip here, I had

They have also had the occasional mud slide. A village about a mile from the site was washed away in the middle of the night; the whole side of a mountain slid about 500 metres. Unfortunately none of the 38 inhabitants of the village survived and only two bodies were ever recovered. At the Camp site in July last year, they lost a drill site and accommodation for 200 men due to land slippage. Luckily no one was injured. One of my jobs up here is to implement and supervise the installation of Personal Security for the workforce. On my first trip, I made a remark in jest about cannibals and head hunters. How wrong I was! The day of my arrival on my second trip, I had to go to one of the local workers village, where he had beheaded his mother inlaw. The retribution was swift; 3 dead, 20 hospitalised and a village razed to the ground!
Luckily or maybe unluckily for me, I’m not staying in Port Moresby, but at an Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) plant about 2.5 hours by plane North West of Port Moresby, in a village called Tari that is located in the Southern Highlands. Once you’re there, there’s another 1.5 hours drive to the site.

the dubious pleasure of experiencing a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. Apparently they’re not that uncommon around here.
The locals live in family villages called clans, with men living in shared huts and women in their own huts; even after marriage. Once a boy turns eight, he moves from the women’s hut to the men’s. Every man has his own bit of farm ground, which his wife tenders and they must grow sufficient food to feed the whole family. Even though the locals are Christian, the men can have as many as seventeen wives, but usually they have around 5. The men have to pay a dowry (bride price) for each wife and the wives are picked by other family members. There is no electricity, phone or running water, apart from the local streams. So far, there have been fifteen deaths (of villagers) here that I know of during my four trips, with two occurring

in the last four days. The Buri (house) of the deceased is burnt down to get rid of evil spirits. All the villages are surrounded by walls, usually made of mud and are around 8 feet high and have a narrow entrance through the wall. These walls usually have a gully several feet wide around the outside and there are poles across the gully to allow access. Some of the bigger villages have an entrance house or hut, which also serves as a store to sell surplus goods. These entrances or huts are barricaded at sunset and opened at first light. One member of the local workforce here, working as a cleaner, is a Tribal Elder and area Chief. That means he controls about a dozen villages. He has fourteen wives. Recently he was sacked from his cleaning position for drinking milk from a carton and returning it to the fridge. Due to his status, he had to be reemployed so as not to lose face amongst his people. He still wanders around the camp site looking busy, but doing nothing. The local drug up here is Betel Nut. They mix the Betel Nut with lime (as in what you mix in with cement or spread on the ground, not the fruit) and a bean-like green called mustard. They then chew this mixture which reacts with saliva and causes the person to go ‘troppo’. It turns they’re mouth, teeth and eyes bright red. After several years of consumption, they get cancer in the mouth and gums and their cheeks get eaten away. Despite this, you can’t stop them from eating it outside of the worksite. As a result of the effects of the Betel Nut on the workers and their continual consumption of the Nut, it is banned from the worksite and any worker who turns up with red eyes or mouth, is sent home until the effects have cleared from their systems. The Site has nine gas well heads, the highest being at 12,500 feet above sea level and about an hour by 4wd west of the main camp. I have been informed that if you travel by foot (as there are no roads past the well heads) for another 2 days west of here, you have a good chance of getting eaten! During my last trip, I was driven up to the 3rd well head at 10,000 feet. During the drive, I was told they found some fossilised sea shells whilst they were making the road. These fossils are at 9,500 feet and are approximately six million years old. There are thousands of them lying all over the ground where they cut the road through a mountain side. Some of

the shells are as large as a football and are in perfect condition. I also saw the local track which weaves its way between all the villages up here and eventually ends at Mt Hagen, some 300 kilometres to the east. I’m hoping to get a helicopter ride to the next site which is to be built some 50 kilometres to the west of the site, but they’ve cut back on exploration for the time being, so I don’t like my chances. The national currency in PNG is the KINA, which equates to approximately 45 cents Australian, but up here and I gather for most of rural PNG, the informal currency is pigs. You can tell a man’s and the villages’ worth by the number of pigs they have. If you injure or
later and told them what happened. The machete wielder was then killed. It took four days for a truce to be called between the two aggrieved families, with the end result being that eight people were hospitalised. Local custom in PNG is to bury their dead by wrapping them in banana leaves and hanging them in trees downwind of the Village until they rotted away. Most, but not all have stopped this custom. They now build little houses on the external wall of the village and leave the body to decompose. The more important the person; the larger or grander the house they are left in. I would have thought that being in the middle of the jungle there would be lots of wildlife around, but I have only seen a couple of birds. Apparently there is too much noise and light for the local fauna. Up at the furthest wellheads, they can sometimes hear the Bird of Paradise early in the morning, but we haven’t seen one yet. PNG is an amazing country, the scenery is truly breathtaking and apart from the major cities where there is massive unemployment and the unrest, it is a beautiful and safe place to visit. Other company workers here have told me about how they have stayed in villages in other provinces and had an amazing time and seen some truly spectacular sites.
kill a pig, you need to drop everything you’re doing and get the hell out of Dodge – PNG, not only just the area you’re in, as the locals have “family” everywhere. The starting price for a piglet is 15,000 Kina (approx. $6,750 AUD), but you would have to pay whatever the owner asks for it or you forfeit your life! Unfortunately, the locals have a tendency to chop first and ask questions later and by then, it’s too late for you. One man was killed when the locals thought he had run over a little girl. She had apparently fallen and hit her head whilst running across the road and knocked herself out. The driver stopped to see if she was alright. A local saw him looking at her, saw the car next to the girl and thought she was dead, so he chopped the drivers head off with a machete. The girl came to several minutes
The majority of the workforce here is Phillipino and the food caters for their normal diet. That’s rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Camp management have started an ex-pat BBQ on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday nights since my last trip. Nothing beats a nice steak, but I haven’t found one yet, though the Cook tries hard. The last couple of times we got to cook our own steaks, a major improvement. Its just a pity there’s no beer. This was supposed to be my last trip to this site, but I have been told that they now want me to come back in a few weeks to alter some of the installation, due to changes in the site conditions. I can hardly wait, 10 hour days, 7 days a week, then being stuck in a small hotel room with shared amenities and no alcohol. Paradise!
Porsche Macan
Porsche is expanding its range to include a whole new class of vehicle. The Macan is the first Porsche to break into the compact SUV segment and is poised to set new standards in the field of driving dynamics and enjoyment – on both paved streets and uneven terrain. The Macan combines the typical handling characteristics that Porsche has represented right from the outset: maximum acceleration and braking values, vast engine power, extreme agility and optimum steering precision. What’s more, all of these features are teamed with a high level of comfort and everyday suitability. The sporty DNA of the Macan, as with all Porsche vehicles, is also immediately recognisable in the design. The SUV is unrivalled in its flat and broad profile on the road. The wraparound bonnet and gently sloping roof line accentuate the overall impression of sporty elegance and powerful dynamics. Many of the design elements have been taken from other Porsche sports cars and enhanced for the Macan, making it clear to see from the very first glance that the Porsche Macan heralds the first sports car in the compact SUV segment. The Macan is “Made in Germany”, produced at the Leipzig plant. Porsche has invested 500 million euro in the plant and has established an entire production line there. The line is set up to produce around 50,000 vehicles per year – all manufactured with the utmost precision and to the highest level of quality. Three models comprise the Macan range at market launch. The Macan S is equipped with a 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo engine delivering 250 kW (340 bhp) and also features active allwheel drive with an electronically controlled, map-controlled multi-plate clutch. This allwheel drive is fitted on all Macan models. A seven-speed double-clutch transmission transfers power as required and almost without any interruption, enabling the Macan S to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (or 5.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono

package). The Macan S has a top speed of 254 km/h and its NEDC fuel consumption figures are between 9.0 and 8.7 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of between 212 and 204 g/km. The Macan S Diesel is the economical, longdistance runner of the three Macan models. Its 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine achieves NEDC fuel consumption figures of between just 6.3 and 6.1 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 value of between 164 and 159 g/km. Nevertheless, the Macan S Diesel accelerates from 0 to 100 km in just 6.3 seconds (or 6.1 seconds with the Sport Chrono package) thanks to its 190 kW (258 bhp) engine and achieves a top speed of 230 km/h. As the top model in the Macan model line, the Macan Turbo is set to be the most powerful vehicle in the compact SUV segment. The 3.6-litre V6 twin turbo engine, which is being used in a Porsche model for the very first time, achieves an unrivalled 294 kW (400 bhp) and catapults the Macan Turbo from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. With the Sport Chrono package fitted, it is possible to achieve that sprint in just 4.6 seconds! Although the top speed is 266 km/h, the Macan Turbo delivers NEDC fuel consumption figures of between just 9.2 and 8.9 litres/100 km, which equates to a CO2 value of between 216 and 208 g/km. The name ‘Macan’ comes from the Indonesian word for tiger. And the Macan really does live up to its name: powerful and ready to pounce at any time, yet light-footed and tenacious on off-road terrain. The sporty all-wheel drive is ultimately a Porsche invention, designed and first implemented by Ferdinand Porsche in 1900 in the Lohner-Porsche racing car with its four electric wheel-hub motors. In 1947, Porsche developed the Type 360, better known as the Cisitalia Grand Prix racing car. The car became a true driving legend, not only as a result of its supercharged 12-cylinder engine and consistent lightweight construction, but also thanks to its permanent all-wheel drive. The design was based on the idea that drive power around bends or on roads with
low frictional values can be converted into propulsion more fully and more reliably. The latest stage of evolution of the allwheel drive – known as Porsche Traction Management (PTM) – has produced one of the world’s most powerful drive systems. In launching the Macan, Porsche now offers sporty all-wheel-drive vehicles across an unprecedented range. A glance at the performance specifications reveals that the Macan has been designed with agility in mind. The engines, drive systems and seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) bring the Macan’s characteristics to bear in dynamic and efficient fashion both on and off road, making for a true Porsche driving experience. The driver and passenger seats feature the low position typical of sports cars. The range of standard equipment fitted on the Macan is extensive and includes the allwheel drive, PDK, multi-function sport steering wheel with shift paddles, large wheels, highperformance audio system and an electrically operated tailgate. The list of optional special equipment offers further highlights, such as air suspension system, which the Macan features as the only vehicle in its segment. There is also Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), which has been specially tailored to the Macan. This system distributes varying levels of drive torque to the rear wheels and works in conjunction with an electronically controlled rear-axle differential lock. Also available is Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), which continuously adjusts the headlight level in keeping with the traffic ahead and any oncoming traffic. The new Macan S, Macan S Diesel and Macan Turbo go on sale in Australia midway through 2014. Australian pricing for Porsche’s sportiest SUV range will be revealed in the coming weeks. Porsche Prize Revisted by Graham Taylor
Club members who attended the monthly meeting at Porsche Centre Gold Coast on the 10th October may remember that a lucky door prize was offered, courtesy of Porsche Centre Gold Coast (PCGC). The said prize was the “Porsche Rejuvenation Package”, as carried out by PERMAGARD-AUTOMOTIVE. As part of the evening’s agenda, a short talk and demonstration of this process was given by Darren Pate, the automotive director of PERMAGARD. The “before and after” that Darren demonstrated on a late model 911 showed just how much better a car could look after the PERMAGARD process. The prospective winner therefore had a fair idea of what the prize entailed. Well, yours truly was the winner and I was very pleased when Darren said he would fly up from his Sydney base to do the work required himself. I explained that my car, a 1978 SC, had been repainted 20 years ago and as such was not “wearing” a factory finish. “No problem,” said Darren. Ashley McLennan, the service advisor at PCGC arranged a date for the work to be done. On the day, Darren and his local PERMAGARD technician Rob, arrived at PCGC with the tools of their trade – buffers, pads, compounds, cloths etc., plus plenty of enthusiasm. What, do I hear you ask, does the rejuvenation package involve? Well, basically there are four steps. Step 1 is Pre-Clean where the car undergoes an extensive pre-wash, which removes any contamination. This allows the vehicle to be assessed in relation to staining, swirl marks and any fine scratching. Step 2, a basic paint preparation, is designed to remove scratching and damage that may have been caused by bird droppings, industrial fallout and so on. By the way, never leave bird poo removal for a later time as Darren said that damage in some cases can start to occur within a couple of hours. Step 3 is the final preparation stage, where the surface is cleaned and a re-building of the gloss levels in the original paint is performed.
28
PORSCHE
NEWS
Step 4 involves the application of a polymer coating that results in a high gloss finish, which is molecularly bonded to the paint. Now, did my rejuvenation package follow the above format? No and that’s not surprising. In my case, there was no pre-wash, as Darren was happy how my car presented. Maybe I have been doing something right all these years. Darren then went through steps 2, 3 and 4 on a small part of the bonnet to see just how much work would be required in each step (e.g. step 2, the basic paint preparation, can sometimes need to be done three times). After Step 4 was finished, the car was thoroughly inspected. Some imperfections were found and so steps 2, 3 and 4 were repeated in those areas. The process from start to finish took Darren and Rob about two hours. As we all know, a 911 SC is not exactly a large vehicle and in my case, Step 1 was not part of the process. It’s worth noting that PCGC treat all their new cars, as well as their second hand vehicles, to this process. Products used include the German-made Menzerna cutters and polishes and PERMAGARD’s own compounds. All are approved by Porsche. What do I think of the final result? Very, very impressive! Had I been a paying customer, I would have been more than satisfied. I have always looked after this car in my twenty years of ownership and have won my class at the club concourse on a couple of occasions. I believe that it looks better now than I can
ever remember. But then again, I’m seventy years old and sometimes can’t remember what I did an hour ago. However, my wife Kaye confirms my thoughts and as most men know, a woman’s word where appearance is involved is dismissed at one’s peril. My car cleaning duties in the future will involve washing only. As I travel less than 4,000 kms per year, Darren says no other treatment will be needed for a long time. Like many club members, I have spent a lot of money on various cleaning products over the years, with varying degrees of success. I am looking forward to spending less money and less time in keeping my car looking neat and tidy. I hope the above does not make me sound like a mouthpiece for PERMAGARD. My main aim in writing this article is to thank Porsche Centre Gold Coast for making available such a great door prize for our club night. Also, I felt club members might like to know just what was involved in the PERMAGARD process. PERMAGARD are not the only people in the market place in this area and frankly, I have never entertained the idea of having such work done. However, I am not sorry that I won the door prize. We all love a freebee and I’m certainly going to love mine for a long time to come. Once again, many thanks to PCGC who are great club supporters and to Ashley McLennan for co-ordinating the day, as well as presenting me with a cleaning kit to help maintain my car.
Member Profile My introduction to the Porsche marque began when I first saw Alan Hamilton take his orange Porsche 911, Number 19, onto the track at Lakeside Park in 1968. My first impression was “Wow, I want one of those!” As a cash-strapped apprentice at the time, I was prevented from becoming a Porsche owner and career and family continued that trend for many more years; but, I always kept the dream of my own Porsche at the back of my mind.

“Would you like to go for a spin?” I was over the moon. We firmly strapped ourselves in and with a roar we headed off down the street. I was mortified at his disregard for the road rules, but totally in awe of the distinctive Porsche exhaust growl and the never to be forgotten acceleration. Michael turned to me with a cheeky grin and said “Goes well, hey!” and I said
I have always been interested in things that are well engineered and go fast and some of that fascination was satisfied by going into aircraft engineering. The skills I learned maintaining aircraft and managing aircraft maintenance became very valuable when I finally was able to get close to my first Porsches. Up until a few years ago, I had never even ridden in a Porsche, but still dreamed of owning one. Michael, one of my son’s friends introduced me to my first up close experience with a Porsche. “Look what I have bought!” and then he proudly opened his garage door to reveal a pristine, clean, ivory coloured Porsche 911. I was beside myself with excitement; to be able to touch and sit in a Porsche 911 was part of my long-time dream. The best part though, was when he said

“Yes, it certainly does!” And with that, I was well and truly hooked. The experience in Michael’s 911 awakened my long dormant dream and made me hungry for any information about Porsche cars. This was when Paula, my wife, noticed this new activity, “What is it with all these Porsche magazines suddenly appearing all around the house?” I was also Googling all over the Internet to get

information on Porsches. I dearly wanted a 911; but it was not going to happen just yet. I continued my research into Porsche on the Internet and one day it happened. I found a very nicely presented, low kilometre, yellow Porsche 986 Boxster. After making contact with the seller and verifying the details, money changed hands and it was mine. A huge part of my dream was finally realised. Michael the 911 owner had become my friend in all things Porsche and recommended that I take my newly acquired car to a trusted Porsche expert called Don Munro, as that was where he was taking his. I took him at his word and visited Don for his opinion on my purchase. Don gave it a clean bill of health and run it through the first service in its new maintenance schedule. This was to be the beginning of a great friendship and Don has since then been a great mentor in my path to learning about Porsche cars and becoming involved in the great world of Porsche club and social activities. At the time, little did I know that Don would also be instrumental in the acquisition of my own Porsche 911; more on that later. I was introduced to, and eventually joined, the Porsche Car Club of Queensland. I have been a
club member for thirteen months now and have attended a couple of concourse events, one of which was the Fiftieth Anniversary at Eastern Creek. I have also been on several social and track days; and I have to say, I have been made to feel very welcome. One of my best Porsche experiences from a Club Day at Queensland Raceway was a passenger lap offered to me by Tony Van der Drift. I was helping Tony with his car when he offered me a ride; this just blew me away and left me on a high for many days after. I continued to think about the possibility of participating in Club Days and other events like these. This interest led to me becoming involved with Richard Walker and his Porsche 996 and putting together a pit crew to assisting him compete in various events. The regular Saturday visits to Don’s workshop
for coffee and a chat with fellow Porsche enthusiasts calling in to discuss their cars has been an inspiration to me and fuelled my desire to participate further in the Porsche adventure. My dream took one more huge leap towards realisation when one morning, while having a coffee with Don, he made a suggestion. “Why don’t you build your own car? You can buy a used Porsche 911 body and do all the work yourself. See where it takes you.” Not many weeks later, there appeared a 1977 911 in rolling condition in Don’s workshop. Don said that it had come up from Sydney and again suggested that it would suit me for what I wanted in a Porsche project. The car was ex-Japan and was left hand drive, not that it particularly mattered to me, but after Don and I looked it over, we found that it would indeed suit me. The body shell is in excellent condition, but still needs an engine and lots of TLC and
hard work, a daunting task to say the least. Having previously restored an Mk11 Jaguar to concourse condition, I was up for the challenge. Later that morning, I was leaving Don’s workshop as the proud owner of my first Porsche 911. This adventure started five weeks ago. The first step is a total strip down of the body and an overall assessment of what I would have to do to turn it into a road registered track/club car, this has already commenced. This is a new adventure for me in Porsche and a complete rebuild for a pre-loved 911 and I’m sure that with Don, Richard, Tony, Stan and many others within the club helping and mentoring me for parts and advice, it will be a terrific adventure. Keep watching this space in your magazine for the progress of the rebuild and join me in my journey following my Porsche dream.

Some tips for preparing your car for sprints;
There are a few things that you need to do to prepare your car for Porsche club sprints. First of all your car must be in good roadworthy condition with a few precautions to make your Porsche perform as it should. Brake fluid should be fresh or have been changed completely within the last 12 months, tyre pressures should be checked and set a few lbs above standard if using road tyres, oil level should be correct as should coolant level, wheel nuts should be checked 130 nm torque, all loose items in the car should be removed. A bonnet safety chain or strap needs to be fitted to the bonnet to stop it opening if the catch fails. All forward facing glass needs to be covered by contact. A fire extinguisher has to be fitted securely inside the cabin within reach of the driver usually can be bolted to the passenger seat mounting point with a simple bracket. Most of this needs to be done before you arrive at the track and your local service experts should be able to help with this. And last wrist to ankle clothing in cotton or wool or a racing suit and an Australian approved helmet and of course your paperwork and your ready to run.

Story and Photos Narelle & Rod McCray We had been looking forward to watching this year’s Bathurst with the introduction of the Nissan(Datos) and the Mercedes now in the fray of cars competing in Bathurst. Needless to say we were quite disappointed when our registration for our 1976 Targa Porsche was accepted for the Autofest display at Oktoberfest on Sunday 13th October. Well we had a brief whinge and then organised the computer/tv to record Bathurst and made sure our mobile phones were charged up for updates and headed off to the Oktoberfest. Brisbane Oktoberfest is run by two Australian German families- Reimer Moeller and Boris Zoulek. Oktoberfest expects 35000 through the gates over this two weekend festival. The Brisbane Oktoberfest is the fifth largest festival in the world. The first Oktoberfest began in 1810 to celebrate a wedding anniversary and has continued since then to creep over the world to Hong Kong, Vietnam, Brazil, Namibia, Sweden, Ireland, Canada, US and here of course. We had a lovely day, it was hot but the breeze was great. We arrived early and were greeted by a gate keeper who didn’t know that cars were coming in for Oktoberfest/Autofest. A couple of minutes later Anthony van der Drift rolls in behind us, after a bit of discussion we followed Anthony into an area of the RNA Grounds and parked. We were then escorted through the Beer Hall and into the food area to meet the workers behind the great Bavarian foods on offer at Oktoberfest. We meet one of the owners of a brilliant patisserie – Kings of Cakes of Graceville, who make delicious coffees, hot chocolate and cinnamon twists, pretzels, gingerbreads and a multitude of cakes, cakes and more cakes. We also meet Anthony’s brother, Michael who runs the Haxen Haus stall that offers Pork knuckles and Chicken platters and other yummy German delicacies.

Of course Anthony’s agreeable sausages were served up with sauerkraut and onions from the German Sausage Hut (One of his customers). His sausages were so popular that they had run out of his mouth watering Cheese Kranskys by 2.00 in the afternoon. Not only was Gottzinger Smallgoods a sponsor of the Festival and supplier of the infamous German sausages but they also had a tasting booth for punters to sample the wares with encouragement of On-line purchases. We were then able to park the cars in the display area around the May Pole. Of course the breeze starting picking up and this required us to re-position away from the big umbrellas in wine barrels located around the grounds to ease the concerns from the organisers. We were extremely disappointed by the lack of Porsche Club Queensland representation at this prestigious event in recognition of German automobiles at Oktoberfest. There was only Anthony’s 1964 356 and my 1976 Targa. Overall the turn out for pre-1980 vehicles at the Autofest was rather pathetic. Only three other vehicles turned up for display, they being a Mercedes from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The BMW and Volkswagon Clubs expressed no interest in participating and unfortunately it appears the Audi Club no longer exists. We hope for the organisers sake there will be a more enthusiastic participation for the following weekend’s and next year Autofest displays. We enjoyed the event with lots of German beer and food, not so much the yodelling, but the Strong Lady was a real hoot. Obviously her brains didn’t match her brawn, because when she picked up two men at the same time weighing a total of 160+ kilos. Her addition of 80+ kg and 80+kg came to 550 kilos. She proved that one woman can “pick up” two men at the same time and no one objected, including their partners.
There were quite a few items were imported from Munich for authenticity to create the Bavarian “village” atmosphere. The Beer was from a well renowned and old Bavarian brewer- Tucher, The lighting fittings, wreaths and bunting, the Dance floor for the Beer Hall and last but not least the Live entertainment including dancers and bell-ringers. We happily only heard the Chicken Dance played once although we resisted the urge to jump up and start flapping, we are certain it would be requested and played many more times during the evening. We haven’t seen so many knickerbockers and Lederhosens on such a varying assortment of legs. Or serving wench outfits/ Dirndls on varying body shapes. Ya. The breeze was helpful for those with a roving eye. There was one “man” wearing a pair of extremely short canary yellow satin shorts with suspenders over a hot pink satin gingham shirt. Shades of Borat! What a sight to behold! Sunday appeared to be a Family orientated day whereas the Saturday apparently catered to those who like a beer or 20. Whilst taking in the atmosphere we were approached by a “Wench” requesting a survey about the event, unfortunately we were participants in the event but we still gave an honest appraisal of the Festival’s program. The event was due to finish at 8.00pm and we were supposed to stay there until after that time so that the vehicles could leave without endangering the beer-infused public. Due to our limited numbers we managed to leave around 4.00pm, just as the general public were starting to get quite merry. We would like to thank Anthony van der Drift for his company, hospitality and organising the Autofest to support such a fabulous Brisbane event and the other Sponsors and Organisers of Oktoberfest and we hope that people will participate more next year even though it will still clash with Bathurst.

ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI) CONVERSION FOR PORSCHE 930 “The Project” (part 1)
Background Porsche introduced the turbocharged version of its 911 in 1975 and gave the model its own designation number “930” to distinguish it from the normally aspirated 911. In its production run from 1975 to 1993, the 930 engine used Bosch’s Continuous Injection System (CIS) fuel injection, which severely limited engine’s tuning potential. Whilst it is true that specialist CIS tuners have been able to extract impressive horsepower figures from 930 engines, this has been a compromise when compared to the tuning potential of running modern Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). One major limitation of CIS injected 930’s, especially those modified for track day use, has been the difficulty to achieve precise ignition timing and fuel metering, resulting in poor throttle response or turbo lag. This resulted in CIS injected 930’s being unable to compete effectively against less powerful cars in on/off throttle scenarios that typically occur in tight corners of most hill climb courses and race tracks.
Story by Bruce Simpson
The 930 engine can be easily converted to EFI by an experienced EFI engine tuner. The minimalist approach retains the original inlet manifold and intercooler. A modification is required to the inlet manifold fuel injector mounting holes (bungs) to accept new EFI injectors or even better is to replace the injector blocks with aftermarket EFI blocks. Then new EFI fuel rails and EFI sensors are added to the engine and connected to the chosen Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Taking the minimalist approach, most of the CIS hardware is retained so that a cursory glance under the engine lid of a 930 (especially one fitted with air conditioning), would not reveal the existence of the added EFI. However, to achieve greater efficiency, all of the CIS hardware should be discarded. The tight radii of inlet runners and tiny plenum of the CIS manifold cannot compete with the greater flow potential offered by the larger, plastic 964 naturally aspirated inlet manifold. The 964 manifold also has an ECU controlled servo operating an internal flap that achieves better throttle response at low inlet air speed and then adjusts to give more power at higher speeds. There is also a weight saving of about 8 kilograms with the plastic 964 manifold. Fortunately, retention of the original twin Bosch fuel pump setup is usually adequate, with addition of a good fuel regulator. However, as 930’s are now old cars, it would be prudent to replace all fuel lines, especially if contemplating use of ethanol based fuels. To further enhance the performance potential offered by EFI requires not only the aforementioned replacement inlet manifold, but also a larger intercooler, custom exhaust headers and high compression pistons. Considerable driveability improvements can be gained by changing to
EFI conversion is a good alternative repair for 930 engines with CIS maintenance issues, which can be expensive to resolve due to CIS parts becoming rarer and CIS performance tuning becoming a dying art. There is also the added benefit of the EFI converted 930 being more throttle responsive (driveable), producing cleaner exhaust emission and achieving better fuel economy. Installing EFI to the 930 engine

higher compression ratio pistons. To avoid detonation under turbo boost conditions, original 930 engines run overly rich fuelling and a static compression ratio of 7.0 to 1 due to the imprecise ignition and fuel control of CIS (actually, the 1975-1978 930’s had compression ratio of only 6.5 to 1). EFI converted 930 engines with well-tuned ignition and fuelling have the ability to run compression ratio of around 9.0 to 1. This combination offers better transition from off-boost to on-boost, thus greatly aiding driveability, resulting in a far more pleasurable 930 for both road and
930 head (twin plug) Twin plug heads had already been added to this engine in the 1990’s, as they afforded better detonation protection to the CIS injected engine. However, better ignition control provided by modern EFI system allow safe use of standard single plug heads. Highly efficient ignition control is possible and not overly expensive, if the original ignition distributor and coil is discarded and replaced by introducing one coil per spark plug. Our engine has 12 GM LS1 coils to operate 12 spark plugs, but of course a single plug head 930 will only require 6 coils.
track day use. For competition use, another worthwhile option is setting up the engine to run on high octane fuel such as E85. Further gains are available by changing camshafts and the turbo charger. The ultimate performance however, comes with addition of a second turbocharger! The EFI modified 930 engine in our photographs can be briefly summarised as follows: •
1980 930 base engine, with standard 74mm crank;
•
Carrillo connecting rods;
•
98mm 9.0 to 1 JE pistons;
•
Twin plug heads;
Spark and fuel timing is taken care of by the ECU, which “speaks” to reference sensors on both the crankshaft and on one camshaft. EFI 930 engine with custom intercooler Prior to conversion to EFI, the engine’s transition from off-boost to onboost was like flicking the proverbial light switch, being so sudden that it would often upset the car’s balance mid-corner. This conspired against better times being achieved in motorsport events. The next stage planned for this project is to tune the engine on an engine dynamometer (“dyno”), with good cooling features. Using a chassis dyno (where the car is driven on to the dyno) is being avoided, as the tuner using an engine dyno can more precisely control operating parameters in the tuning process. In particular, it is desirable to avoid overheating (sometimes encountered on chassis dyno’s) and to avoid the detonation masking noise made by tyres on rollers, which occurs when tuning on a

chassis dyno. When the tuning is completed, the engine will be reinstalled in the car and it will be prepared to continue its life as an occasional hill climber. The car is a replica of a Group 4 racing 930 chassis. The Porsche factory made only 31 of such race cars (called the 934) between 1976 and 1977. Post Script Upon completion of the various stages of the project, the 934 replica recently did a shakedown day at our club’s Mt Cotton hill climb. That was a lot of fun, although the two downhill sections demanded conservative speed due to the car having only about 80% of usual brakes retardation (believed to be caused by gel in brake lines, attributable to old brake fluid).

Social Drive Day to Rudd’s Pub at Nobby
Article by Donna Beard
Well, we had to have one overcast day for our drive days this year and Sunday 17th November was the one. Not a bad day - just a little overcast, not enough to deter a bunch of Porsche loving enthusiasts a chance to stretch the legs of their weapon of choice. Porsche Centre Brisbane was our meeting point again to get the drive underway. We travelled out through the Centenary Motorway onto the Ipswich motorway, then onto the good old Warrego Highway – right through to Gatton. We found a great park here for our toilet stop and chance to re-group for a photo opportunity. The park had a huge lake in the middle of it and BBQ’s and tables a plenty. A nice place if you need a stop on your journeys west. After our quick stop, we picked up young Lincoln Wilkins, a budding photographer who happens to LOVE Porsches! We thought it was very good of him to jump into Sharon

He was a good sport and took some fantastic photos for the day. From there we travelled out along Maa Maa Creek Rd, a great road - some parts look like they were blown out of the rock walls and I have to say the sound of 10 Porsches driving through these rock walls was something special.
Pub is owned by Sam and Robyn Little and they will make you feel very welcome.
Our lunch spot was Rudd’s Pub built in 1893. This Pub really is something special; it’s named after Steele Rudd of Dad and Dave fame, who lived in Nobby for a time. He used to sit in front of the fire in the Pub’s Heritage Room to pen some of his famous stories. The hotel itself is quite unique and still retains the character and charm of a hotel from a bygone age. The walls tell a photographic story of days gone by, with photos and memorabilia covering the walls and ceiling – it’s like eating lunch in a museum. The

Nobby is also the birth place of Sister Elizabeth Kenny, who pioneered the treatment of infantile paralysis. The hotel has a whole wall devoted to her work. So another great drive day - our last for 2013. We hope to see more members on our drives next year.

Morgan Park Sprints and Driver Training Thirty competitors nominated for the last event of the year at Morgan Park over the two days, on the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of November. The event included two members from Porsche Club NSW who came up to experience the delights of sunny Queensland, which didn’t disappoint. The pair were were very complimentary of the way the event was organized and the quality of the venue and will be back with others they tell us. Some kangaroos were present on the track and some have suggested they brought them with them to feel at home. On Saturday morning the weather looked a bit threating, however the rain held off and the day started with an experiment in driver training with Paul Stokel. Paul attending for the morning only provided a drivers briefing and then sat in with drivers both new and experienced, to provide pointers and advice, all of which was well received. The Motorsport and general committee would like to see this aspect of track days become a regular event to assist both new and existing members to gain the most from their cars. There were several comments about his input resulting in lower lap times and in future we will probably dedicate one run group to those who require this type of training, so that it doesn’t impact on the timed sprints. The timed sprints then commenced and some quick times were achieved, with a few PB’s attained. Morgan Park is a real drivers track and many believe that it is the best all round track in Queensland. There was some excitement early in the day when a car blew a turbo in spectacular style, leading to the emergency service springing into action. However no serious harm was done, except to the unlucky owner’s wallet! Strong competition was evident between Don Munro, Rodger Hall, Bill Black, Phil Brook and Antony Vander Drift over the two days, with plenty of laughs to be had by all. Phil was without a car, but managed to share himself around any car that he could find. Rodger had a nasty surprise when a car driven by my partner Nicole, loomed large in his mirrors, leading to

Rodger wonder if his skills were in doubt or if his car had a serious malfunction. However his male pride survived intact when he realised that it was Phil exploring the potential of number 403 to great effect. Bill Black was heard to complain that he had a slow time due to a plug lead coming loose…yeah, yeah! Another driver who will remain nameless discovered that the nut holding his steering wheel on had become loose, causing some interesting moments during an opposite lock situation, resulting in a rapid change to his ergonomic positioning! Or was it just simply the nut behind the wheel that was the problem? Don had a ‘seniors’ moment and had a horizontal rotation from which he was able to quickly recover and continue on to greater things. The day ended with storm clouds looming large and the sky looking very green, however whilst there was some hail and horizontal rain, no damage was done. Even the Radical was saved from filling with water and eventually, most participants headed off for a dinner organised at the Warwick hotel and a good night was had by all. Sunday dawned fine and sunny and the hot pursuit of championship points continued throughout the day, with the track being the better for the rain once it had dried. All in all a great weekend amongst friends and we hope to continue in this vein next year, but it will require the support of all to be achieved. Next year will be a challenge to maintain what we have had this year, so please all get behind our motorsport endeavours and help us to continue this enjoyable experience. Finally, thanks to Richard and Emma who worked tirelessly to ensure the day was a success. Emma had to battle with an unfamiliar timing system, which caused some anxious moments, but thanks to the assistance of a club member with knowledge of the system, the problems were overcome. It is amazing how much goes on behind the scenes to make these days a success, particularly the CAMS ones, so well done all.

964 Turbo C4 - 5 speed 964 C4 Turbo - all ’91, 964 and 993 turbo running gear in the classic look Dec 89, 964 body - built as daily drive and Targa event. This 24 year old beauty has travelled just over 100,000 km, had every major department refreshed. The genuine ’91, 964 Turbo 3.3 Lt engine (replacing the tired 3.6 naturally aspirated) was fully refreshed and installed by T&D Auto, 2011. The Grand Prix White paint is in amazing condition for the age. The 993 GT front air scoop is added - just for looks and better air flow! This example of a Carrera 964 Turbo has the amazing handling capacity of Big Red Turbo brakes, turbo suspension and four wheel drive leaving you in control particularly under acceleration on touchy conditions! Even with such performance this car is a pleasure to drive in the city or open country roads. This rebuild C4 964 Turbo was aimed at a Tasmania targa event, an ideal road tournament winner for tough competition - tight winding curves, quick braking and acceleration in unkind conditions, just the type of work suited with the huge advantage of the all wheel drive, big brakes and the superb Turbo power plant.
