As we are a Porsche Club for all Queenslanders, it is high time we pushed further north with coordinating a mix of social events for our northern neighbours. It’s no secret our Qld membership is predominantly South East Qld centric however a number of our equally passionate members are based north of Rockhampton. Around 10% give or take a 911. We have 3 x official Porsche Dealerships in the state with our northern friends now having their own local dealership based in Townsville. An enthusiastic team lead by Jason Collins. I’m pleased to confirm Porsche Townsville is keen to play a part in our ever expanding club thus making our push north that much easier. I have spoken to Bruce and Gail Absolon who are active club members based in North Queensland and very keen to assist our club in bringing PCQ social drive days to the north. In fact without Bruce this would have just stayed just an idea. We both agree it would be great to see catch ups editorialised in our club magazine and on our club’s Facebook page. This will in turn will add value to our northern PCQ members and over time build for them lifelong friendships so many of us have found since joining our club. As I’m in my home straight as Club President, over the coming years one of my wishes is for future PCQ committees to build on these first steps and bridge the geographical divide between Porsche owners in Coolangatta through to Porsche owners as far away as Cairns. I’m confident with the help of members we can put on regular northern based social drive days,

dinners and perhaps even an odd club night at Porsche Centre Townville in parallel to what we have taken for granted over the years in S/E Qld. It’s a journey and over the coming months and years ahead I look forward to our region’s growing far closer. May 22, 2016 - The Macleans Bridge Sports and Classic Car Festival ‘Show and Shine’ which this year was part of the Interclub Challenge Championship. I’m pleased to report PCQ won the event with a red 997GT2RS selected as the star of the show. Well done Pete. Larry MacFarlane in his genuine 1973 911 RS took out the Best European and Steve Coopers 356 Outlaw took out the People’s Choice Award. Well done to all you gents. More on this event will make its way onto our clubs Facebook page, Magazine along with our PCQ website courtesy of Tim Place. Tim ran our Concourse and may I say thank you to Tim and all of our members who made the event such a success and made it possible. We signed 2 new PCQ members up on the spot and as a result added a rare emerald green 930 along with a red 997 Turbo to our club garage. Nice. Greg Mc Whinney has confirmed that this year’s PCQ Xmas party will be held at the Plough Inn Southbank on Saturday the 10th of December 2016. Further detail will follow but it is not a fancy dress (what a relief). Entry tickets are expected to be around $60.00 per head (TBC) and attire is a more casual affair this year. On the night Shannon’s will be presenting the 2016 PCQ Club Motorsport awards on the night.
Shannons have donated all the motorsport trophies for 2016 so on behalf of the club a BIG thank you to Phil Ross and Shannon’s. Also keep a diary note for July. We have another ‘Xmas in July’ but this year we are down at Coffs Harbour with the NSW Porsche Club. Further information will make its way onto our website events page along with updates on our clubs Facebook page. Have you joined it yet? Its almost time for the clubs AGM and as you know this is my last term as President. Time to pass over to a new baton holder. As you know all PCQ Committee positions will be declared vacant on the night of the AGM and many of us on committee are looking forward to a break. Running any club with over 500 members takes its toll on its committee holders – its volunteers. I will save my last hurrahs until my final Prose but it is YOUR club and over the last 6 years we have endeavoured to spread our wings to represent all Porsche models and all members interests equally. Without fear or favour. I have lost some bark along the way (not unexpected) but the passion I have for the club still burns strong. After only two rounds of this year’s competition, it became clear that there were deficiencies in the benchmark lap time system. Consequently a Motorsport Forum was held in May giving all club members the opportunity to both have their say and be presented with proposed fine tuning of the benchmark system. This was universally accepted by those in attendance and has been implemented by the Motorsport Committee with a range of benchmark lap times applied to each class based on power to weight figures within each class. This has resulted in a fairer and closer competition by allowing all cars a better chance of achieving a benchmark lap time.

Round 3, an afternoon sprint at QR was another successful event with again a number of first timers joining us and also very pleasing to see the return of some members back to club motorsport. This included Loren Hallett, John Datson and Lee Cooper. We again made a profit on the day by having two run groups at one of QR’s sprint days, instead of hiring the track in our own right.

For those who couldn’t make it, it’s okay we are bringing Rennsport to you. It was a weekend full of fun, special cars and motor racing. It was great seeing the QLD’er
Matt Campbell do so well on the track. There was a few QLD club members that took part in some of the classes and it was good to watch. Although it was a bit rainy on the Sunday and the track was wet, it didn’t stop the excitement.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT Position vacant/Nominations open Regrettably, I will not be nominating for the Membership Secretary role at the upcoming August AGM. Unfortunately as Deb and I constantly travel throughout the year, I haven’t been able to give the Membership role the time it deserves – and the Management Committee has been very understanding of my absences and has stepped in to cover for me this last year. I thought we could cover it with technology – but alas not to be. I encourage you to nominate for this rewarding role – dealing with new memberships, member’s issues, SIV (Club) Registrations, writing the update for the magazine and engaging with the Committee has been really enjoyable and rewarding. Without doubt the Management Committee, who are all volunteers giving lots of time freely, always go the extra yard for the Club and they are a great bunch of people – and Porsche lovers to boot – how’s that!! The Membership role itself requires some computer skills, organisational ability and time during the busy period (July-Dec). I can provide handover and records/equipment and

either myself (if in Oz) or Web guru Tim Place can provide support when needed. However, remember, to nominate you must be a financial Full Member – ie membership paid up BEFORE the AGM. Talking of the AGM and voting – a reminder – to nominate for any Committee positions you must be a Full Member AND you must financial (ie be paid up) before the AGM night in August. Although under the Club Rules a period of grace until 30 September is allowed before your membership is voided, you are not financial until your renewal fee is paid. Simple. A new blend of performance
the new Porsche 718 Cayman
Australia. The fourth, redeveloped generation of the mid-engine sports coupe has a more striking, athletic and efficient appearance. Just a few weeks after the debut of the new 718 Boxster, the new 718 Cayman is extending the new model series. For the first time, the hard-top is priced below the roadster – in a similar way to the 911 models. 718 Cayman pricing starts at $110,300 in Australia with the 718 Cayman S from $140,600. The same new four-cylinder flat engines with turbocharging as in the 718 Boxster are being deployed in the 718 Cayman. As a result, coupe and roadster have an identical engine output for the first time. The entry-level version starts with 221 kW (300 hp) from two litres of displacement. The S model delivers 257 kW (350 hp) with a displacement of 2.5 litres. This represents 18 kW (25 hp) more power compared to the predecessor models with an NEDC combined fuel consumption of 6.9L /100 kms for the 718 Cayman and 7.3L / 100 kms for the 718 Cayman S when fitted with optional PDK transmission. The tremendous torque of the new engines in the 718 Cayman promises driving enjoyment and agility even at low revs. The two-litre engine of the 718 Cayman produces maximum torque of 380 Nm (plus 90 Nm over its predecessor), available between 1,950 rpm and 4,500 rpm. The 2.5-litre engine of the 718 Cayman S features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG), a technology hitherto used exclusively in the 911 Turbo. In the 718 Cayman S, the VTG charger additionally has a wastegate for the first time. It delivers maximum torque of 420 Nm (an extra 50 Nm) to the crankshaft at engine speeds between 1,900 and 4,500 rpm. For the driver this means even better torque across all engine speeds. The 718 Cayman with optional PDK and Sport Chrono Package sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The 718 Cayman S completes the same sprint in 4.2 seconds. Top speed of the 718 Cayman is 275 km/h

with the 718 Cayman S peaking at 285 km/h. New chassis tuning for greater precision and more lateral stability. In terms of driving dynamics, the new 718 Cayman models follow in the tracks of the classic 718 sports cars of the past. Thanks to their outstanding agility, the historic mid-engine sports cars won numerous races in the 1950s and 1960s such as the Targa Florio and Le Mans. Lateral rigidity and wheel tracking have been improved in the completely retuned chassis of the 718 Cayman; springs and stabiliser bars have been designed for added firmness and the tuning of the shock absorbers has been revised. The steering, which is now 10 per cent more direct, enhances agility and driving dynamics. The rear wheels, which are a half inch wider, in combination with the redeveloped tyres result in increased lateral force and hence greater cornering stability. Dynamics options such as the Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) allow the sporty character of the 718 Cayman to be further enhanced. Another available option is PASM with a 10-millimetre lowering of the ride height and additionally in the S model PASM sport suspension with a 20-millimetre lowering of the ride height for the first time. As in other Porsche sports cars, the Sport Chrono Package can be adjusted via the programme switch on the steering wheel. Supplementing the previous settings of “Normal”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus” is the “Individual” programme, which is able to call up previously programmed individual settings for various systems. Due to the car’s greater driving performance capabilities, stronger brake systems are now in use with 330-millimetre brake discs up front and 299-millimetre discs at the rear. The 718 Cayman now has the brake system that was previously used in the Cayman S. The 718 Cayman S, on the other hand, uses the fourpiston callipers of the 911 Carrera combined with six-millimetre thicker brake discs. Distinctive

appearance. The new 718 Cayman has been further developed as comprehensively in its design as in its technology. The taut proportions, prominent air intakes at the front and sides and low side profile underscore the boost in dynamics. The nose has a much sharper profile, which gives the front end a wider and more masculine appearance. The ultra-slim front lights above the air intakes, which contain the parking lights and indicators, further reinforce this impression. Rounding off the front end of the 718 Cayman are the significantly larger cooling air intakes and bi-xenon headlights in their new design with integrated LED daytime running lights. LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights are available as a new option. Viewed from the side, the new sport coupe reveals its striking guards and side sills. The redesigned rear has a much wider look due to the accent strip in high-gloss black with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights. The tail lights have been completely redesigned and are distinguished by the three-dimensional technology and four brake spots that appear to float freely. Redesigned interior and PCM as standard. Inside, revisions are visible for both the 718 Cayman and the 718 Boxster. The upper part of the dash panel including air vents is new. The new sport steering wheel in the 918 Spyder design has been added as well as a revised Porsche Communication Management (PCM). For Australian models this includes as standard: mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces, navigation and voice control as well as the 150watt Sound Package Plus for the 718 Cayman. The PCM can be extended with optional modules to thoroughly adapt it to personal requirements. For instance, the Connect Plus module is available as an extension of the navigation module and allows various iPhone functions and apps to be used in the PCM via Apple® CarPlay. Rennsport Odyssee 2016 – Part 1 First Half – Days 1 to 4 Article and Photos by Michael Paine Porsche Rennsport Australia was first held at Sydney Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek in western Sydney in 2013. Deb and I took the opportunity then to go down for the Show’n Shine with the Carrera and we had an absolute ball. When we found out that Rennsport was on again in May 2016, we couldn’t wait to register and get down there for a great time with fellow club members and the Turbo S. We thought we might have a real outside chance in the Show’n Shine as the Turbo S has won a trophy each time we’ve entered the car in a show – fingers crossed. Planning began a few months earlier by registering for the Show’n Shine with Porsche Australia, arranging entry tickets for the weekend and booking accommodation for the trip. This Rennsport we decided to stop at Kempsey, mid-way to Sydney, but the return journey was in a single hit – time to test the credentials of the Turbo S as a continental cruiser! Then there was the car cleaning and preparation – I’m not good at much, not a spanner head, not a track junkie and not a social butterfly – but boy can I clean – I can buff paint to its undercoat, wipe seats to their springs and vacuum matts to its stitching!! Over 2 weeks the car was patiently and thoroughly prepped. The Odyssee was planned fairly simple, we’d leave Brisbane on Wednesday 27th April and return on 2nd May – days 1 & 2 – drive to Sydney, day 3 re-clean and re-prep the car for the Show’nShine, day 4 at Rennsport showing the car, day 5 again at Rennsport and day 6 drive back to Brisbane. Easy! We knew Social Director Greg McWhinney was organising a social group to Rennsport, but given we’d entered into the Rennsport Show’n’ Shine and needed to get the car ready, we decided to go down a day earlier. Day 1 Brisbane weather has been unusually warm for autumn and Wednesday 27th dawned perfect – blue sky, fabulous sunrise and not a cloud – will it stay that way for the 1000km journey? Forecast looks promising, but the last Rennsport it rained from Kempsey all the way to Sydney! With the car packed with essentials – new collapsible bucket, chammies, cloths, buffs. Oh, and undies and PCQ club shirts, we left at a leisurely 8.30am. Connected to the Pacific Motorway and put the cruise control “on”, stayed in the far left lane (no rush) and turned up the CD player (really) after I filled the stacker with choice 70’s & 80’s music when the bands actually played the instruments!! The one thing we like about Porsches is they’re understated, bland if you like, compared to other car nuts halos who like the Ferrari/Lambo/ Aston look-at-me style. Porsche are simple, refined, curved and incognito in comparison – they prove their worth in action – and go like stink! So, the drive down to Ballina for morning tea was uneventful. Other motorists and truck drivers took little notice of the black Porsche pootling along in the slow lane. The Pacific

Motorway is outrageously excellent – two laned, smooth, undulating with the surrounds. It now travels a bit inland by-passes all the coastal towns that made the Pacific Highway so interesting – Burringbar, Byron, Newrybar – a great set of twisty roads – but alas now dotted with speed cameras. From Ballina to Grafton the Highway hasn’t changed much except for pockets of roadworks – the road surface is ageing and getting bumpy, but the car took it easy and it’s surprising how comfortable Porches are on long hauls. However, Grafton to Coffs Harbour was a nightmare – practically all roadworks – and the sections ran for 5, to 10 km, with the speed limit dropping to as low as 60kmh. The roads around here have had it, no wonder they’re getting upgraded to motorway design – there’s few passing places, poor surface, narrow – and lots of semis. There was even a blasting section which stopped traffic for 30 minutes (luckily we got through that one). This was the worst part of the whole drive – but next Rennsport when it’s finished………! Lunch stop was Coffs – and a Subway on the menu, but where? I remember there’s one on the southside, but we thought we’d try the main shopping strip/mall – High Street. Fabulous, we got a car park right outside the shopping centre with a Subway in it!! We also got plenty of looks – I suppose the Turbo S is a bit different to the backpacker/combi/surfboard set you normally get around these parts – Oh and the motorised walkers for the blue rinse set! Lunch finished, relaxed again and we head off. Kempsey is only an hour or so south of Coffs, so we arrived at our motel mid-afternoon – the Turbo S purring along. Early that night we drove into town and had Chinese for dinner – and sustained the first damage on the trip. Seems someone (very short, probably primary school) was keen to pose next to the car for a selfie, but their belt buckle and paint don’t mix, so we ended up with paint scratches below the driver’s mirror – ouch. Day 2 The scratch was discovered next morning when I quickly washed and chammied the car for the next leg. The day again dawned perfect – clear sky, sunshine and a bit of chill in the air. The motel – Powerhouse Kempsey, was great, comfortable, clean and off the highway. The owner’s son came over in his school uniform before we left and shyly asked if he could take pictures of the car to show his friends – sure not a problem. Want to sit in it? See the engine! Still shy but wow wow wow. Genuinely chuffed he was – we like that – that’s what it’s about. The Pacific Motorway continued past Kempsey and from about Port Macquarie, it’s motorway all the way to Sydney. Boring but nice. The music up, content conversation about all things you talk about (including some dribble on my part) on a 1000km Odyssee – home, kids, travel, cars, bikes, family, work (what’s that?), some more travel etc etc. Turbo S on cruise control, engine purring – fuel economy has been outstanding -8.5l per 100km – not bad for 331kw and an evil attitude in spurts.
Thad meant a tank of fuel would get us around 600km – or so I thought until we hit Sydney. Rest of the drive to Sydney was uneventful – the Pacific Motorway now extends around Kempsey and by-passes all the memorable mountain twisties - Bulahdelah and Kew for instance, but the alternate is the road is pretty good. Finding somewhere to eat at Raymond Terrace is a problem, so we headed to Maitland for lunch. The main shopping street is a bit deserted, but that’s understandable given the downturn in the mining industry, and the Hunter is a mining region. Enjoyed a quick bite before we headed off on the Newcastle-Sydney Motorway. Sydney traffic is horrendous, and even with the PCM navigation, we got lost getting to our hotel at Wentworthville. Both Deb and I grew up in Sydney’s west, but things have changed so much!! Nothing but traffic – it took over an hour to get from Hornsby to Wentworthville, but we eventually arrived about 4pm. Day 3 Preparation day. Friday dawned cloudy, but the skies cleared to a mild day – perfect for sprucing up the Turbo S. I realized I forgot washing stuff. No worries, Supercheap was just down the road, so supplies were purchased. The afternoon was spent washing, chammying, and polishing the car. PCCB is great – very little brake dust to deal with, and with the good weather we had, it was not laborious to get the car looking smick – dust out the floor mats, wipe the inside down and we’re good to go. That evening we enjoyed a quiet dinner at a local centre and a nice glass of wine – ready for the first day at Rennsport. Day 4 Rennsport. Oh no – rain – it’s raining, damn. We’re scheduled to arrive at 7.30am just outside Sydney Motorsport Park with PCNSW to head into the venue as a group. It was good to see some PCQ members lined up in their cars, including David Sharam and Winnie Yuen in their pristine 987 Boxster S – looks like competition even from our own club will be stiff. No matter – its participation that counts and its Rennsport!!. The Show’nShine was allocated to the inside of the track near the skidpan, just outside the Porsche Australia showroom, unlike Rennsport in 2013 when we were set up on the outside of the track near the Grandstand, opposite the pits at the end of the main straight. It was well organised – getting into the venue, past the public car park – which already had some choice Porsches parked up for the day was a breeze. Still raining, the Shown’Shine cars were set up in allocated lines with plenty of room between vehicles for opening doors etc. We managed to park next to a pristine Guards Red 964 (more on that later) and a fabulous olive green 911L (more on that later too) – we’re in good

We don’t ‘cut and polish’ your car; we meticulously refinish every inch of the paint to safely and permanently remove defects at a microscopic level
company. Now for the hard work. We broke out the brollies, collapsible bucket (that got some looks), sponge, chammies and cloths. The car was really dirty from the mirrors down. I traipsed back and forth for over an hour, replenishing clean water in the bucket to wipe the car down – wheel wells included to try and get the car up to scratch.

Eventually the car was finished and it was time to look around – there were some really great cars on show, from pristine 356’s to the latest 991 GT3RS’s (two) and all models in between – 911’s SC’s 993’s, 996’s and 997’s as well as a 924 Carrera GT, 944’s and 928’s – there was even a Cayenne. From our club we had Kent and Jack Kieseker and their SC, Sheldon Arkinstall with his 964, David and Winnie and others (sorry if I forgot you). There must have been nearly 50 cars on show.
See, I said we were in good company, but alas it didn’t rub off!! Oh well, we’ll try harder next time (rain permitting).
The rain started clearing, clouds blew away and the sun came out. In fact the afternoon was great. Various venues were set up to showcase choice Porsches in and undercover Porsche Strasse – 356’s, a Speedster, a very early 930 Turbo, and racing Porsches as well – 935’s, the new 991 RS, Targa Tassie winner – it was Porsche heaven. Eateries were also set up, there was a driving school for kids.

The day ended about 4.30pm and we headed back to the car and the hotel happy campers. We didn’t score a place, but as I said, it’s the participation that counts. I’ve included some photos from the day and more will follow in Part 2 of our Rennsport Odyssee.
All the while, the racing was on – regularities, GT3 Cup, sprints – it was all there. Several PCQ members had registered to track their car – Larry Macdonald, Bill Black, Bill Brookes, Steve and Lee Cooper. It was fantastic racing – and nothing was held back. Thankfully there were no track incidents to speak of. We spent the afternoon walking around enjoying the atmosphere, sat in the Grandstand for the best views of very close racing – and I managed to get some good photos. Judging for the Show’nShine was done and the winners announced in the late afternoon. Unfortunately we were enjoying the racing so much we missed the presentation.

Porsche Rennsport Australia Motor Racing Festival 2016 Article by Bill Black
It doesn’t matter how many laps you do at Eastern Creek ( SMP), every time through Turn 1 the adrenaline levels rise, every part of your body is on full alert and all your senses gathering feed- back waiting to see if you have exceeded the grip level or the driving ability level. Unlike going into The Chase at Mt Panorama which can be taken without lifting off, Turn 1 at Eastern Creek induces a slight lift of the right foot maybe to settle the nerves or just a confidence boost. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing boring about the rest of the track. There are more lines through Turn 2 than on a barcode. Turn 4 is so good that the apex can be clipped millimeter perfect lap after lap. Turns 5 and 8 have so much “available track” that if tempted like many of us you will earn a visit to the stewards for getting all four tyres on the wrong side of the yellow lines. Get Turns 10 and 11 right and you carry all that advantage the full length of Brabham Straight, only to give you a bigger buzz through Turn 1 again. A fantastic track that never disappoints.
A number of PCQ members competed in both the race and regularity events over the three days of practice and competition. In the “GT3 Cup Challenge”, Jaxson Evans qualified on pole and won all 3 races. Scott Taylor equaled this achievement in the “Sports Car Race” again on pole followed by 3 race wins. The other driver to excel in this category was Phil Brook having his first ever race meeting and a chance to pit his driving skills and car against other IROC competitors. Phil said “the weekend exceeded all expectations” culminating in crossing the finish line 0.1 second ahead of IROC benchmark driver Sven Burchartz and well ahead of the other IROC cars in the final race. Also competing in this category were Steve Cooper, Russ Kempnich, David Tibury and Jeff Neale. Although we only had one competitor, Stan Adler, in the Group S & N races, he didn’t go un-noticed. Stan qualified 2nd and ended up
with a second in Race 1 and a third place in Race 2. In race 3, although Stan crossed the finish line in first place, he earned a trip to the stewards for allegedly jumping the start and copped a 30 second penalty and relegation back to 3rd place. Originally 3 Regularity groups were planned, but lower than expected numbers saw this cut to 2 groups. Regularity 1 for pre-1990 cars saw 5 PCQ members competing including two of our younger, second generation members. Lachlan Harburg in the ex-Porsche Cup winning RSR Replica and David Kempnich driving his Dad’s 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS, one of three genuine 2.7 RS’s in the Regularity Group. Regularity 2 for newer Porsches had 3 PCQ membesr competing, Jason Arnold in his 2004 996 GT3RS, Rob Annett a 997 GT3 RS and Dean Croyden in the ex-Jim Richards 996 GT3 returned to period correct livery. None of our members figured in the regularity trophies.

For me there were a number of highlights, obviously to again drive Eastern Creek against Porsches from other clubs. To see the Porschestrasse display and demonstration laps of significant and desirable Porsches including two Le Mans winning cars from The Museum alongside club member Larry McFarlane’s immaculate 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS and historically significant 934. For me though the ex-Ray Thackwell 1973 2.8 RSR was the one

I’d like to take home and park in my garage. It is not only the cars and track that make Rennsport such a great event, it’s also the people. Be it the big name racing drivers, Porsche fanatics such as Magnus Walker, the amazing Saturday night dinner or just catching up with fellow drivers from other Porsche Clubs. I was also impressed by the number of PCQ members who travelled to Sydney to be part
of the festival. This included what can only be described as Club Royalty with four past presidents, Peter Harburg, Phil Hart, Gavan Starr-Thomas and Lee Cooper, two of whom, Peter and Phil are Life Members, all present at Rennsport supporting our drivers. Let’s hope it’s on again in 2019, rumour has it that Melbourne will be the venue.
Rennsport Social Drive Article by Greg McWhinney It was a small band of cars (3) that joined me for the two day social drive to attend Rennsport at Sydney Motorsport Park. We met up at BP Yatala on Thursday morning (28th) so with Glen & Bev in their 997 Targa – Tom & Scott in a classic Green 911 Carrera 3.0 L & my 911 SC we hit the road. First stop Ballina Manor Boutique Hotel – for morning tea. This is one of the oldest buildings in Ballina with not only a Heritage order on the building but also the front brick fence – due to the bricks having been made at the turn of the 20th century. After a guided tour of the building explaining the history covering from the 1900’s through to it being a private girls school through the 20’s into the early 30’s with mannequins in the parlour with period dress the ‘young ladies’ had to wear – including an original 2 child timber school desk. The house was completely refurbished by the current owners in 1999 with attention to period detail, with 3000 square meters of carpet ordered in from England, wonderful period antique furniture throughout all the bedrooms, and a three storey balustrade that is French Polished by hand every 2 years that takes 8 weeks to complete by a local retired craftsman. After morning Tea we headed south – due to all the road works travelling down the Pacific Highway put us behind schedule so we stopped at Coffs Harbour for a quick bite for lunch. Onto the Crescent Motel in Taree – and what wonderful hosts Ken & his team are, once settled into our rooms, we were asked to join them across the road at the Manning Valley Hotel for dinner – Glen won a meat tray and seafood tray supporting the local Football club and SES, these we gave to Ken & Mark our hosts as we were travelling and no esky’s. After a great meal and a lot of laughs we went back to the motel where Ken insisted we join them in ‘a glass’ of Red – this soon became 2 bottles of Red with a couple of Ken’s local business owners dropping by – with stories – laughs being shared around and a great time being had by all. We were treated to a great cooked breakfast before we hit the road for Sydney. Then on down the Pacific Highway until north of Raymond Terrence we turned right and headed across through the small village of Seaforth and across the top of the Hunter Valley on some great back roads before arriving in Singleton for morning tea at a local café. The Putty Road was as good as I remembered it to have been as it had been more than 30 years since my last ride along this road on a Kawasaki 900 K-3 which still makes me smile thinking about it. The trip went very well and we arrived at the track about 1.30pm in the afternoon – ran into quite a few fellow PCQ members around the track. I came across Bill Black who had a smile from ear to ear informing me he had completed a few ‘runs’ around Sydney Motorsport Park track and enjoyed every minute of it.

Rennsport Social Weekend Drives Article by Greg McWhinney
Saturday morning arrived & Glenn – Bev & I headed up the Blue Mountains for morning tea and social tourist drive of the area. We arrived at the beautiful Hydro Majestic – one the oldest hotels in the Blue Mountains we some great history. After walking the grounds and the providence store we headed – across to the main restaurant – The Wintergarden and enjoyed an amazing High-Tea. We then toured back to Katoomba drove around to the Three Sisters – onto the Cascade Falls at Leura and back to Motorsport Park to enjoy the rest of the days Porsche-Rennsport activities.
Sunday Morning Breakfast Run with PCNSW. PCQ was extended an invitation by PCNSW to attend their Sunday Breakfast run finishing with a Hot Breakfast at the Alpha Motel at Sydney Motorsport Park before attending the last day of Rennsport Having being greeted by a very wet Sunday morning we met PCNSW members at Bunning Car Park in Casula where our little band of PCQ members Graham & Tracy – Glenn & Bev along with Sandy & I were warmly greeted which made for a great day out. It was interesting seeing the PCNSW members wander around a ‘wet’ car park to admire each other’s car – as some had attended with a ‘new’ vehicle’ and others had made engine or wheel/tyre modifications that others were keen to see. The group then headed out to Oran Park – across towards Camden – then back through Silverdale – Wallacia – Mulgoa – Penrith and back to Motorsport Park for a cooked breakfast. It was a great early morning sight which at times almost stopped traffic as there were 53 vehicles with 85 people in attendance for the drive – from a 914 – a couple of 944’s, Cayman’s & Boxsters, several 930’s, 964’s, one 996 and one 997 Turbo, followed by early 911’s through to the latest 991 range of Porsche’s, one Macan S & Cayenne S, one Golf R-32, one BMW M-3 & alone Lambo in burnt Orange – all members of the Porsche club NSW and along with our little band of PCQ members. When we arrived at our destination 58 stayed on for the hot breakfast – while the others headed straight to the track. Car: 2015 991 Porsche GT3 Driver: Matt Close Navigator: Cameron Reeves Targa Tasmania is arguably the best collection of closed roads for tarmac rallying anywhere in the world. These roads contain some of the most challenging, exciting, rewarding and exhilarating corners you will find in Australia, and for 6 days each year we are granted the privilege of taking equally exciting cars across these roads as fast as we dare. When given the choice of an open road with no oncoming traffic or speed limits, the car at the top of the list for Matt Close has always been the Porsche GT3. Whilst previous cars in the stable include a 968CS MO30 and 996 Turbo, the dream of owning a GT3 became reality late in 2015 with the acquisition of a 991 GT3 in Guards Red. Matt entered Targa High Country and was immediately rewarded with a victory in the premier Showroom Class. What was equally amazing was that the car received no outside technical, service or refuelling assistance during the event, and used the exact Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres which the car had been delivered on. Without doubt the highlight of this event was the final 18 kilometre run up Mt Buller, the showroom spec car providing the perfect (and fastest) ride to the top of the mountain. Leading in to Targa Tasmania 2016, we knew that Porsche had engineered a car with the ability to be the fastest across the 6 days. Compared to other cars, the system packaged into the 991 GT3 makes for an ideal tarmac rally car. The main challenge would come from the combined experience and speed of Jim Richards in his Cayman GT4, with the Dodge Viper of Jason White providing a unique American view on engineering a fast car. The first day was reasonably uneventful, cleaning the first stage (any time below base

time results in zero time penalty, any time in excess of the base time contributes to your competition time), having the second stage downgraded (due to an unfortunate accident involving a friend of mine who was thankfully ok), and once again cleaning the third. The fourth stage around George Town was the only competitive stage for the day, and we came away 3 seconds down on the Viper of Jason White in second place. This was the first real indication of the Viper’s speed, and we were happy with the outcome. We knew it could be much quicker than us, but the difference was only marginal - a good sign of things to come. End of Day 1: Second by 3 seconds. Day 2 went well for us, the GT3 relishing its first outing on the pristine Tasmanian roads and winning the first stage of the day and taking back the overall lead in the process. It was each way in the lead up to the midday break when we were tied for the outright lead. We lost 8 seconds on the stage after lunch, but took back 10 seconds on the last stage of the day to take the overall lead into the evening by 2 seconds. The highlight of the day was the result of good planning and preparation by taking a corner on a blind crest at 250kph and topping out at 269kph on the following short straight before braking for a fast left hand sweeper. Its those pieces of roads where my skills and ability as a navigator are personally satisfying, and very much appreciated by the driver. End of Day 2: First by 2 seconds. Day 3 was a continuation of the battle, with an interesting development taking place. Despite the huge 8.4 litre V10 engine and massive power of the Viper, the GT3 with its 3.8l flat 6 was more than holding its own on the flat out stages despite an almost 200hp deficit. The combined aerodynamics of the GT3, the PDK gearbox and huge amount of grip providing the necessary tools to ensure we stayed in contention. At lunch it was once again a tie for
outright lead with the Viper. In the first stage after lunch we had our first trouble of the event picking up a stone chip on one of the ‘fast’ stages (a lazy 270kph indicated on the dash) which then started cracking across the windscreen as the day progressed. Whilst it had all but stopped by the end of the day, it did cause us more than a little concern. End of Day 3: Second by 6 seconds. Day 4 was the Viper’s home ground, and whilst we took 4 seconds out of the Viper in the opening stages, he stormed home to finish the day 10 seconds clear of us. Today was always going to be a challenge for us up against home ground advantage and an intimate local knowledge of the roads. Still, we knew we had a package and a rhythm between us and the car which we could race at all day. It’s remarkable that a car which is compliant and easy to drive around town is so easy to drive at speed. End of Day 4: Second by 10 seconds. Day 5 was eventful to say the least. We lost 11 seconds on the first stage through a combination of too low tyre pressures to start with (therefore reduced grip) which would provide some compensation for the punishment we put on them through the stage. The trouble was that we then overheated the tyres towards the end of the stage. Getting the right tyre pressure is crucial to any cars performance, and whilst we had done our best it had still cost us a lot of time. We took back 6 seconds on the next stage, and went in to the longest stage of the event with them literally (and physically) just in front of us (about 15 seconds). On the start line my driver commented on a bit of blue smoke out the right hand side lake pipe, and it was this comment which became a reality little more than 5 kilometres into the stage when we overtook them with smoke pouring out the exhaust, the big V10 struggling to keep pace with us in a straight line. The Viper would retire in the stage soon after.
We backed off for the rest of the day, taking a little more care on problem corners and bumps, but still managed to take stage wins or equally fast on a cleaned base time. Our tight scrap for first was now a 9 minute lead over second.
we found a good rhythm in the car, I managed to find (and wave) to my visiting family spectating within a stage (we didn’t stop), and managed to avoid the plethora of cars which seemed to be falling off the road.
car became unsettled through a fast corner on a damp road which once again saw us almost throw it all away. We got to the end of the stage, stopped, thanked our lucky stars and then drove into the finish.
End of Day 5: First by 9 minutes.
The penultimate stage started out well, but about half way through we hit a bump midcorner which blew the right rear tyre off the bead and meant a long and slow limp to the finish line. We bled a bit of time, but got through with an almost 7 minute lead still in hand. The short wait while our crew drove to the end of the stage felt like hours (but was really only a couple of minutes), but they changed the tyre in under a minute (centre lock wheels were a massive saviour) and had us arrive at the last stage ready to drive to the finish. Or so we thought. The flat tyre had upset our rhythm and our concentration levels were not completely focussed on the job. This was highlighted by a big oversteer moment at 150kph (possibly caused by the cold rear spare tyre) when the

Our concentration would be challenged the next day, the normal finish is usually at the end of this day, but we had a small loop to contend with tomorrow, and the difficulty of knowing we had less than 100 kilometres between us and a podium finish. The first corner of the first stage of the last day almost saw us literally throw it all away. A bigger than expected bump caused us to bottom out and have a tank slapper almost into a telegraph pole. We got through that stage, and was met in the next stage by a crashed car in the middle of the road blocking our way. We stopped, helped, and got a derived time for that stage. The next two stages were uneventful -

What an event, what a car, what a driver. Targa is never an easy event, and everyone will have a story about their own week of racing. We knew we could do it, and whilst we questioned the reliability of the Viper, we didn’t know we would push him to breaking point. The GT3 was exceptional, and apart from the bumps (which we knew we would have to respect, just maybe not enough on a couple), had a remarkably troublefree event for what is a car driven off the showroom floor (complete with roll cage), given a wheel alignment, race seats and an Akraprovic exhaust, and raced.

PORSCHE CLUB QUEENSLAND MOTORSPORT 2016 ROUND 3 - QR SPRINT On the 21 May 2016, PCQ held Round 3 of the Club Championship at Queensland Raceway. The event was merged into the Ipswich Open Sprint Series and we were given two of the five run spots. The day was off to a slow start due to the V8 Experience programme from the morning, running about an hour late. QR still ensured that a minimum of 4 runs for the afternoon was achievable. Our first run group was 17 cars which includes such drivers as Loren Hallett 53.2068, Phil Brook 55.6899, Steve Cooper 55.8654 and Greg Turnham 56.5954. This group had some tight racing which saw only 10 seconds between the fastest and lowest. An entertaining battle developed between Grant McLennan and Glen Wallace, both in new 991 GT3’s. They traded time throughout the four runs. The second run group was 17 drivers which included a large range of cars and driver experience. This group included 5 first-time drivers, Gerald Ong, 991 Carrera S, Cameron Mitchell, 997.2 Turbo, Paul Dalitz, 991 GT3, Will Harburg, 944 Turbo and Mark Wekara 968. Regrettably, Paul did not get to take the track as a result of a medical incident prior to the race. We are delighted to hear that he is going to be okay. Special thanks go out to our Motorsport Director, Bill Black, who stayed with Paul until he left for Hospital; then visited him in hospital and finally, assisted Paul in the return of his car.

The Cooper family were well presented by Steve, Lee and Emily with competitive times being record by all three. David Dodds and Will Luyten, both winners of a year’s free motorsport from the Christmas party, are taking full advantage of their prize. Both drivers are doing well and getting the most out of their cars. The day was incident free and no breakdowns other than QR Race Control “suggesting” to Bill Black that he sit out run 4 as his car was blowing a little smoke, of course, which he duly obliged. 2016 Motorsport Results
PCQ Members take on 24 Hrs of LeMons The first ever race of the 24 Hours of LeMons in Queensland was held at QR, Willowbank, Ipswich and it included three race teams with PCQ members. Car No. 15 – “Black Magic Racing” – Hyundai Excel – Drivers Eckhard Schwarting, Ross Kennedy, Sven Koremans, James Austin and Kevin Vedelago Car No. 11 – “Family” – BMW - made up of members of the Grant Sparks family Car No. 71 – “Bombastic” – Toyota Celica – this team included PCQ member Ray Angus Friday 27 May 2016 – Practice and Qualifying It was a very relaxed day, all drivers started by signing in and getting their equipment checked. Vehicle scrutineering came next, slow and drawn out, but necessary. Most cars passed and some cars were given penalty laps. Car No. 15 – Black Magic was fortunate enough to not be given any penalty laps. Car No. 17 of Ray Angus Car’s team did not receive any penalty laps. Car No. 11 – the BMW of Sparks & Family. was not so fortunate, receiving a total of 3 penalty laps for an undisclosed reason.

The rest of the day was spend getting each driver familiar with the car in readiness for qualifying. Qualifying Hmmm?? Well, it didn’t happen, instead, we were told that the day would start with a rolling lap for an undisclosed number of laps and the race start would be random. Saturday 28 May 2016 – Day 1 of 24 Hrs of LeMons Driver briefing was detailed and then we were into it. All cars left the pits in single file for a formation lap, returning to the start/finish line for a big photo. The race comprised 30 cars of all possible makes – no Porsches. As advised on the previous day, the race would commence with a rolling start and did so. In the first quarter of the race we saw only one car withdraw. The standing of our Club members was as follows: Car No. 15 – Schwarting & Co – 5th Car No. 11 – Sparks & Family. – 9th Car No. 71 – Angus – 15th
The second quarter (end of Saturday) saw the race settle down, with little movement and no withdrawals.
Article by Kevin Vedelago At the 163 lap mark, James Austin, recorded the best team time. Then, at lap 165, Black Magic had what initially seemed to be a terminal breakdown. Seb, the Black Magic mechanic, went to work and established that it was the front CV joint; a new one was ordered and by 3pm, Black magic was back on the track after having lost more than 30 laps and back in 14th position.

Sunday 29 May 2016 – Day 2 of 24 Hrs of LeMons The third quarter (Sunday morning) had a field of refreshed cars from a long night of mechanical work. 26 Cars took the grid for the re-start of the race.
The standing of our Club members was as follows: Car No. 11 – Sparks & Family – 5th Car No. 15 – Schwarting & Co – 8th Car No. 71 – Angus – 20th Fourth and Final Quarter Cars and drivers were dropping like flies. With twenty minutes remaining, all three club cars

were in trouble. Car No. 11 was in the pits with a leaking coolant hose. Regrettably, they did not have a spare, so the decision was made to hold the car in the pits and send it for the last two laps so that it would be classified as a “Finisher”. Car No. 15 was circulating with very little clutch and almost no brakes and Car No. 71 was circulating but slowly. Car No. 555, a Nissan Pulsar, almost lead the race from start to finish and went on to record an impressive victory, 509 laps, leading by 9 laps.

We have complete 4 rounds so far this year with round 3 being the Mt Cotton Hill Climb that was held on 14th May. Only two entries from the Porsche Club competed with myself in my trusty SC and Paul Dalitz who drove his 991 GT3 to finish the highest placed PCQ entry on the day.
It was a perfect day out and I understand no incidents occurred. The results after round 3 (Hill Climb) and Round 4 (Macleans Bridge refer to other article) are as follows: 1st Lotus Club (76 points) 2nd MG Car Club (72 points), and 3rd Porsche Club (70 points)
