Rounding off the competition year we report on Winton and Calder Sprints and the Hill Climb at Bryant Park Haunted Hills. Congratulations to Stewart Lachaln for taking out the Outright Award and to Bob Hawker our new Club Champion. We then revisit Calder for the Annual Presidents day event. With Sandown unavailable for bookings in November this year Calder was the closest alternative to take your friends for a blast in your treasured ride. Socially the PCV returns to Federation Square for the hopefully annual Show & Shine.

Also featured in this edition is the Annual dinner dance this year held at the Sofitel hotel. Congratulations to Michael O’Brien and his social committee for staging another excellent event. On a personal note I have finally got the 88 Club Sport registered and on the road. Unfortunately I missed Presidents day by a few days but I look forward to putting her through her paces at Phillip Island in January. Currently she’s haveing new SSI’s and a Danks muffler fitted and a few other tweaks (yes, legal ones!) in readiness for the 2011 competition year. After a year off I am itching for a drive faster than our elected state representatives will allow!

Hopefully we can turn this into a full blown judged event in the near future as this is an event that has been missing in the past in the club. I’m looking forward to entering my Clubbie next year now that it is finally registered.

As it’s the silly season please take care over the Christmas break. Looking forward to seeing you all at the track next year.

Welcome to the final Porsche Parade for 2010 and what an action packed edition it is.

Wait till you see this issues “What’s in your Garage”! Will, Barb and I take a trip up to Mansfield to visit Greg Lovett’s amazing collection of cars and planes. I always dreamt of having a double garage after living in the inner city for so many years but Greg has set the bar a little higher with an aircraft hanger to store his collection. I always look forward to photographing these stories and meeting our members and this collection was no exception. How many people do you know with an airstrip leading to their garage besides John Travolta?

In this packed edition of Porsche Parade we have articles from Bryant Park (Haunted Hills) by Simon Dunn, Calder Sprints by Peter Harrison, Winton Sprints by Rick Moscati, Presidents Day by Bob Hawker and a special articles on Drive Bathurst by Dean Taylor. The 2011 Club Competition Calendar should be out by the time you read this and it looks like being a great year with the new addition of Broadford to make things a bit interesting! I’ll see you all for the first event at Phillip Island on the 29th January 2011,

president’s message

Keith Ryding President

Peter Harrison Vice president

Welcome. What a great night the Dinner Dance was. I am sure that I can speak for everyone that this event is one that is extremely enjoyable and professionally executed by Michael O’Brien and the Social Committee. This year has once again seen the club reach new heights of success in competition, social and registers and the significant contribution by those who worked endlessly behind the scenes by being members of the respective committees must be owed a great deal of gratitude by the membership. To organise an event is no small task. Each committee member will put in a minimum of 100 hours each year and their effort is largely unrecognised. As your new President, I wish to publicly acknowledge the contribution of Ian Jenkins who, as President for the last two years has managed the club through the impacts of the GFC. Ian would regularly help out at competition meetings setting up timing equipment and helping out at registration or scrutiny. Roger Randle has now passed the baton to Michael O’Brien. Roger’s calm hand on the tiller has ensured that we have remained a stable and financially viable club. Grant Stephenson steps down at the same time from the committee but has elected by popular demand ( so he tells me) to remain on the Competition Committee. Finally Jacqui Collihole who, after four years on the committee decided to call it a day. As the editor of the magazine for the first three of those years, we have much to thank Jacqui for. She helped take it from black and white to a full colour magazine that stands head and shoulders above other club magazines. Congratulations to the Competition Class winners and Outright Champion Stewart Lachlan, Club Champion Bob Hawker and joint Rookies of the Year Nick Karnaros and John Swan. You will be able to read more about the year in the articles by Aaron Ireland, Andrew Bonwick and other contributors in this edition. Our joint Club Members of the Year, Peter and Clair Cromie richly deserve their recognition. The award is to those who participate in all aspects of the club. Peter and Claire have for the last three years managed our most active register, the Mid 911 Register, volunteered as track officials, stood on windy corners at race tracks as well as participating in all social activities and runs. Whilst in Tasmania in November I met the Event Director of the Tasmania Porsche Club. As a result of the meeting the concept of a greater presence of our club throughout Australia took a step forward. Tasmania will be entering a team in the Regularity event at Sandown in February as will do South Australia, NSW and Queensland. Jeff Thomas and Michael Chapman’s dream of a national competition just got closer to reality. The clubs are also interested in competing with us at Phillip Island and

the Winton/ Deca double header in June. Tasmania is also reciprocating by working to have us compete at Symons Plains in 2012. The Club Committee has done an excellent job and masterfully managed the activities of the Club over the millennium. With all aspects, social, competition and registers working like a Swiss watch it is now time to realise the potential of the Club’s brand. Two new committee members, AnneMaree Fitzgerald (Marketing) and Stephen Wood (Advertising) will ensure that the advertising revenue so fundamental to the magazine’s bottom line is improved and where appropriate the Club’s brand potential be explored. Aaron Ireland also joins the committee as Driver’s Representative. Felix Rieniets last year’s Club Member of the Year, takes up his seat as Deputy Social Director. We also have the “old stagers” and some of them have changed roles. Michael O’Brien has moved into the role of Treasurer and will from now be known as Roger O’Brien (the last two Treasurers were named Roger) and also keeps the title of Social Director, Peter Harrison remains as the Competition Secretary and moves into the Vice President role. Andrew Bonwick now takes on the Event Directorship, Kerry Leonard continues with the Registers and Jolanda Brezovec remains seated as Club Secretary. Graham Lachlan will continue to keep an eye on Driver Training and Ron Widdison keeps us well informed as the Magazine Editor. We would be a dysfunctional lot if we didn’t have Carly Pasco and Lisa Gillespie to keep us organised. For each of the responsibilities, social, competition and registers there is a team of members who work tirelessly. Too many to name. These people are the register captains, competition marshals, race secretaries, competition committee, social run and social night organisers. I on behalf of the Club offer you a very heartfelt thank you. Please acquaint yourself with the members of the new committee and let them or myself know if there is anything that you believe we need to do to serve you better. It is your club and we are your representatives. If you wish to get involved come and see me. You will be welcomed with open arms.

social corner It is a privilege and pleasure to be Social Director of this magnificent club. At the outset I want to thank all our members who have attended any of our events throughout the year, and to all those involved in helping in which ever way to the success of these events, thank you. The Annual Dinner Dance has just been held, it was a great success, but difficult to believe it’s over. Planning for next year has already begun, so if you enjoyed this year’s event, make sure you lock away Saturday 3rd December 2011 for yet a bigger offering! The 2010 Social Committee included Adrian Nelson, Carly Pasco, David Turner, Felix Rieniets, Ian Jenkins, Janet Conheady, Jolanda Brezovec, Jennie Turner, Julia & Colin Anderson, Neil Drew, and yours truly. Many others including Alf Carrigan, Barbara and Will Darvall, and Don Ballingall have continued to provide support and direct assistance to Social Activities as needed. On behalf of our club, I extend our thanks to all those and many others whom ensure that we provide such a successful programme. After many years of dedicated service Jennie and David Turner have stepped down from the social committee. Jennie and David your contributions to the success of the social activities have been much appreciated and on behalf of the club we thank you for all the efforts you have made during your time on the Social Committee. For 2011 we welcome Trevor Leavesley to the committee and look forward to benefiting from Trevor’s experiences in helping with Register Events. Club Nights: Our year began with a “Nautical Theme” at our opening outdoor Club Night and Barbeque at Victoria Dock, Docklands. Now well established our normal fair includes a superb BBQ, wines including sparkling, beer and soft drinks. This event was attended by over 160 members and guests, who also enjoyed the opportunity of guided tours viewing the restoration of the Alma Doepel. The event was organized by David Turner. Our second Club Night of the year saw over 115 members and guests enjoy the hospitality for the very first time at Porsche Centre Brighton. We ran our finger food format, and enjoyed a great presentation from Chris Mason on the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Our return to Porsche Centre Melbourne on June 15th had to be one of our best ever Club Nights. Duane Rodgers organized a presentation on Targa Tasmania utilizing several presenters in a panel format with Glenn Ridge as MC. It was a packed evening, with everybody enjoying the magnificent presentations. Our next Club Night was on August 17th: Janet Conheady organized Rod Barrett from Ford Performance Racing for an excellent presentation on the night. Rod’s presentation was very entertaining, although perhaps a little hampered by a novice projector operator, SD. The final Club Night of the year, our AGM, saw us run in party mode! Following the formalities of the AGM, it was great to see that many members took the opportunity to dress up in that something a bit “special” which added to the fun of the night. The finger food, sweets and coffee and the tall

tables as opposed to seating worked extremely well also. I think we all enjoyed the addition of the serving champagne on this special night – bubbles and diamonds seemed very appropriate! The Club Nights would not be possible if not for the efforts of the Social Committee, and the tremendous depth and wealth of talent provided by all those who contributed throughout the year, and of course the incredible support and facilities provided by Porsche Cars Australia, Porsche Centre Melbourne and Porsche Centre Brighton. The Grand Alpine Tour: 11-16th February: On behalf of the 42 members including myself, lucky enough to enjoy this event, I would like to thank Terry Ward for his excellent work. The event was a wonderful mix of mountain driving, beautiful overnight stays, and thoroughly enjoyable camaraderie. Congratulations Terry and Janice. Our Major Social Events: Our first run for the year, the Summer Run “Round the Bays” on the 21st February was organised by Julia and Colin Anderson. Julia’s initiative included prizes for “The Best Dressed Lady” “The Best Dressed Man” and “The Best Dressed Couple”. We even had extra prizes for the young children who were lucky enough to join us. Thanks Julia and Colin. The 18th April saw the return of a past favourite the Family Day. Re-introduced by Janet Conheady and Michael Chapman, the event proved to be very successful and popular with around 76 adults and 45 children attending. Very well done Janet and Michael. Our Autumn Run was organised by David Turner and Neil Drew. This double run included a weekend away at Warrenmang Vineyard and resort, and those who couldn’t make the full week-end were able to join us for the Sunday lunch at Blue Pyrenees. The concept of a double run enabling members to enjoy the option of an overnight stay proved very successful, and one which will have a permanent place on our annual calendar. This year the Winter Run was held on the 18th July, and incorporated a drive over Mt Macedon and around the wine country of Heathcote for morning tea, and Lunch at the Novotel in Creswick. The run was organized by Felix and Adrian with very well prepared and detailed route instructions. Our traditional Spring Run was cancelled this year. We had planned to incorporate our Spring Run with the CAMS sponsored CARnival event which was to be held over the NSW long week end, starting on the 1st October. Unfortunately due to a lack of confirmed bookings from all clubs CAMS decided to postpone this event until 2011. We are looking forward to this new initiative in 2011. The Last Run was the return of one of our favourites, Will and Barb Darvall once again organised the run Over the Ranges to Trawool in the Goulburn Valley. It was an absolutely beautiful day and there is a full report elsewhere in the edition. Our third “Show and Shine” event organised this year by Felix Rieniets and Michael Bailey and held at Federation Square, was host to 38 entrants with competition and awards across all of the Club’s Registers, as well as a “member’s choice” award. The continued success of this event confirms the event as a permanent fixture on the

Social Calendar. It is a real show case event for the club. Make sure you reserve the last Sunday in October for future years. Go Kart Night: Our ‘Go Kart Challenge’ evening on 16th September achieved a full field of 32 entrants, who enjoyed a very thrilling and competitive night. With rule changes, organisational chaos, delays and multiple starts, the event is proving to be one of intense competition. Did the lap record fall? Check the detail on this event elsewhere in this edition. Rex Broadbent’s development of the rules has enhanced the event considerably – thanks Rex. The Annual Dinner Dance: Our night of nights at The Grand Ballroom, Sofitel on Collins was held on 4th December 2010. We had an excellent response to this event with 286 members and guests in attendance. The Sofitel has the capacity to cater for as many members as we could ever achieve – at least in the medium term. Combined with our favourite band Cheek to Cheek, and excellent service, the event was a great success with everybody staying long after the official finish time. Fortunately we also had the benefit of Sofi’s Bar for an After Party till 2.00am. The efforts that go into the event each year is just staggering, and would not be possible without the financial support of the general Committee, the work of the Social Committee, and of course Carly Pasco and Lisa Gillespie, for giving their all to ensure it would be right on the night. Our Club Nights and major Social events have included 1,582 attendances for the year, even without our traditional Spring Run! This is not to mention all of the events organised by our integral registers, let alone the mainstay of our club - competition. Social Competition Winners: Now in its sixth year, the Social Competition remains an important catalyst in boosting attendances at all our social events. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors the following prize winners are: First Prize – Yokohama tyres of the winner’s choice, including fitting & balancing, to the value of $1,500 courtesy of Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre, has been won by Will Darvall and Second Prize – items from the PCM Selection Department to the value of $400 courtesy of Porsche Cars Australia, won by Lindsay St Baker, and Third Prize – wine to the value of $200 courtesy of Nillumbik Cellars, won by Chris Carolan. Congratulations and thank you for the support you have shown over the year. For the year past, I thank you for your support and I hope that every member who attended social activities this year gained as much enjoyment as we did from putting the program together. I would also like to thank the club for the opportunity to continue as Social Director and Treasurer in 2011. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to experience as many social events in 2010 as you are able. On behalf of the Social Committee I wish you a very enjoyable Christmas and hope to see you all back in 2011 for many more varied Porsche social adventures in the New Year. Michael O’Brien, Social Director SUMMER 2010-11

I only service cars for my friends... It doesn’t always start that way, but that’s how it ends up. We both own Porsches, we have shared values and interests. They’re skilled and committed to their careers, same here. When I started as an apprentice at Hamiltons over 15 years ago, it was bred into the Service Team to always go the extra mile, always strive for excellence. I call it the “Hamiltons Touch”, and it’s part of my DNA. My friends deal directly with me, I do the work, I answer their questions, I sort problems. They get the Hamiltons Touch without the price. … and I’m always looking for new friends. “the car ran beautifully...the whole car was feeling more refined… A very good outcome and satisfied customer.” Stephen Marshall “my wife is very happy with her Boxster’s performance and says it even sounds better... your follow up call was also greatly appreciated.” John Mitsy

PORSCHE PARADE

from race control Welcome to my first edition of Race Control as Competition Director. The last few meetings this year have gone well, with good fields, an interesting end to the Competition rankings and limited rain. We were at Winton for a cool and damp Saturday at the end of October. Most drivers managed between 3 and 5 sessions, with the last sessions being slow and wet as the skies opened. Marshalls are very hard to get at Winton and we were down on numbers, so we used the tracksafe lights. These show a slow flash, fast flash yellow or red LED panel, which has the same meanings as the yellow or red marshals flags. The lights are controlled from the scrutiny bay. An advantage is that for some parts of the circuit it is a much faster way of presenting a yellow or red to the competitors. A disadvantage is that the system is only offered on a ‘whole of course’ configuration, and we are unable to zone off the parts of the course as we do with flag marshals. We are discussing with Winton if we could get access to the full system. President’s Day this year was moved to Calder, as we lost our booking at Sandown. Numbers were well down. This could be the impact of Calder as a location compared

to the convenience of Sandown, a reduced number of drivers as a result of their view of the Calder circuit or that the Bureau of Meteorology was forecasting the mother of all rainstorms for the whole of the week leading up to the event. As it was the rain stayed away, and drivers and passengers had a full complement of laps. Several drivers commented to me they were coming off for a break after a large number of laps. Presidents’ Day is our marquee event, as it showcases our club and our interests to the wider public. There is therefore a much more restrictive approach to driving style to reduce risks on this day. Never the less, we had one of our few accidents this year in the last session of the day, which is unacceptable. We continue to look at how we stage President’s Day, when it is held and where, so as to provide safe access to passengerin-car excitement at this event. We have just held our open review of the PCV Standing Competition rules at PCM. A good number of members attended and provided valuable feedback to the Competition Committee about the rules we run under. Several suggestions were extensively discussed but not supported for inclusion to the rules. One change that will be made is to include a process for allowing 16-18 year old drivers at competition events. These drivers

will be mentored by a nominated experienced driver, so they learn the protocols of our events as well as the driving skills. Other changes will be a return to both the use of ‘P’ plates for the first 3 speed events for new drivers and compulsory attendance at a prior advanced driving skills course for new drivers. Changes to the vehicles classification should also improve the mix of cars available for D Class and so improve racing and entries for this category. Next year starts off with a sprint at Phillip Island which is always popular. Jeff Thomas and Michael Chapmen are organizing a 6hour regularity at Sandown in February, which is attracting interstate interest. We are also returning to Broadford in March after a long absence. I would like to thank the members of the Competition Committee who have put in so much effort this year to bring you a very successful and well run season. Critical to this is the volunteer marshals, who contribute extensively to its safe and smooth running. I would like to thank them personally, and on behalf of our club. Well done!

Andrew Bonwick, Competition Director

Porsche GT3 Cup cars on their way Re-launch on the world stage for national Porsche championship The full grid of cars for next year’s Porsche Carrera Cup Australia (PCCA) series return have left Porsche racing headquarters in Weissach, Germany, bound for Australia.

The PCCA returns to Australian race tracks at the Formula 1™ Qantas Australian Grand Prix from March 24 – 27, 2011.

The 22 thoroughbred racing machines were loaded onto a vessel earlier this week and are expected to arrive in Melbourne in mid January of next year. “The cars, the parts and all the hardware have been loaded and locked into containers and are on their way,” says Porsche Motorsport Development Manager, Jamey Blaikie. The new 2011 model GT3 Cup car features a bigger and more powerful 3.8-litre boxer engine now developing 450 hp (331 kW), up significantly from its predecessor’s 400 hp. Increased frontal downforce and a massive rear wing ensures greater stability at high speed, while the new car’s wider track and racebred suspension provides optimum handling. Each GT3 Cup car tips the scales at approximately 1,200 kgs and is ready to race at $267,705 (excluding GST) apart from fuel, stickers and driver. SUMMER 2010-11

Porsche news

Porsche Carrera Cup Australia returns to the Australian Grand Prix in 2011 Re-launch on the world stage for national Porsche championship Porsche GT3 Cup cars will provide a spectacular aural and visual backdrop at the Formula 1™ Qantas Australian Grand Prix from March 24–27, 2011. The Australian Grand Prix has been selected as the re-launch event for Australia’s championship of the world’s best and most exciting one-make sports car racing series. “We are delighted to bring Porsche Carrera Cup back to Australian race tracks with the series re-launch on the world stage at the Formula 1™ Qantas Australian Grand Prix,“ said Porsche Cars Australia Managing Director, Michael Winkler. “We have an exciting new GT3 Cup race car, substantial interest from a number of teams and the full support of the Porsche factory to bring Carrera Cup back better than ever.“ A number of competitors have already signed up for the 2011 championship, including Porsche racing stalwart Mark Cini and 2008 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia champion Craig Baird. A number of new competitors have also commited to the 2011 series and paid deposits for the lightweight, 450 horsepower thoroughbred racing machines.

The new Cayman R Porsche’s new top mid-engined model debuts at the LA Auto Show The letter “R” in the Porsche alphabet is reserved exclusively for very special models. R stands for Responsive, Refined and Racy – attributes the new Cayman R unveiled today at the LA Auto Show has in spades. The new, lightweight, mid-engined coupe is designed for spectacular road dynamics and exhilarating driving. This is achieved by reducing weight, increasing engine output and retuning the chassis to an even sportier set-up. The new Cayman R is 55 kilograms lighter than the Cayman S and gains eight (8) kW to bring maximum power up to 243 kW from its 3.4-litre sixcylinder boxer engine. With the standard six-speed manual gearbox it will accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 5.0 seconds. With optional double clutch PDK gearbox the sprint time is reduced to 4.9 secs, or down to 4.7 secs when combined with optional Sport Chrono. The new mid-engine coupe is capable of a top speed of 282 km/h with manual gearbox, or 280 km/h with PDK. Its NEDC fuel consumption is 9.7 L/100 km with six-speed gearbox and 9.3 L/100 km with PDK. The main aim during the design of the Cayman R was to improve the two-seater even further in its performance, driving dynamics and agility through consistent weight reduction. With an unladen weight of just 1,295 kg the Porsche engineers were able to reduce the power-to-weight ratio with standard manual gearbox to 5.32 kg per kilowatt. The higher level of standard specification enjoyed by Cayman S customers in Australia will remain in the Cayman R. Key features of climate control airconditioning and Porsche Communication Management (PCM) incorporating radio, six-disc CD changer, Bluetooth and IPod functionality as well as satnav will remain standard on the Cayman R. These items are deleted from overseas models. Therefore the net weight saving on the Australian specification Cayman R is around 40 kg compared with the Australian spec Cayman S – with weight reductions coming predominantly from the use aluminium doors,

lightweight sports bucket seats, super lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels (complete rim set weighs less than 40 kg) and other small but critical weight saving measures. The Cayman R’s purpose and purist character is evident from first glance. The extended silhouette of the bodywork (which has been lowered by 20 millimetres compared to the Cayman S), combined with the distinctive fixed rear spoiler, the high-quality silver-painted wheels and numerous sporting highlights on both the interior and exterior, ensures an individual appearance. The black-framed headlights, black exterior mirrors and “PORSCHE” decal on the side – in contrasting black or silver, depending on the body colour – take design cues from classic Porsche racing cars. The new Porsche Cayman R goes on sale in Australia late in the first quarter of 2011, priced at $165,000 with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. PDK is a $5,700 option and includes steering wheel paddle shifts on the Cayman R.

AGM & Club Night 19th October 2010

Andrew Bonwick presents his competition report

The thanks were made to the relevant establishments Porsche Cars Australia and Porsche Centre Melbourne for there ongoing support to the Porsche Club of Victoria. The association with Porsche Centre Brighton was also made a mention for there participation in hosting a club night as a developing relationship with the PCV.

Retiring Pres Ian Jenkins and new Pres Keith Ryding As usual the Annual General Meeting was held at the showroom of Porsche Centre Melbourne. A cocktail party was to follow and all present had dressed for the occasion. A display of diamonds was also being set up as people arrived. This was a presentation that had been organized by Janet our devoted social committee member. It was to be an elegant affair. The 35th AGM was declared open at 7.00 pm. by Ian Jenkins who had established that there was more than a quorum present. The minutes of the last annual general meeting had previously been distributed to the members and these were proposed by Grant Stephenson and seconded by Roger Randle. A show of hands from those present confirmed this. Ian praised the running of both the motor sport and social events including the National Porsche Clubs event at Bathurst. Unfortunately this event will not be held again due to a decision by the local council. 14

Michael O’Brien presents flowers to Carly Pasco A thank you was also made in regards to the efforts of Carly and Lisa in the administration area of the Club. The general running of the club not only of the above mentioned but the committee members, marshals and other significant participants were also applauded for their participation in the club events. Ian expressed his pleasure at being part of this great club and serving as a committee member for 8 years including the last 2 years holding the position of President. He then called for the members to support the new incoming President in his future position.

Roger Randle then presented his Treasurer’s Report. It was previously mentioned that fears in 2008 of the effect of the global recession, the Porsche Club Vic may be affected financially but the Club showed great strength in 2008/2009 and showed a healthy profit for 2009/2010. The audited financial statements for the 2009/2010 financial year ending the 30th of June were adopted, Proposed by Roger Randle, seconded by Andrew Bonwick and the Annual Report was accepted by those present. Ian announced the resignation of three committee members and we all thank them for there tireless hours of work. Roger Randle for his strong financial management; Grant Stephenson for all those so important competition results and Jacqui Collihole for her wonderful work on the magazine as our previous editor. The following committee members were elected or reelected: Andrew Bonwick, Ron Widdison, Graham Lachlan, Anne Maree Fitzgerald, Aaron Ireland, Kerry Leonard, Felix Rieniets, Stephen Wood.

Ian Jenkins announced that he was standing down as President and the following were elected as Office Holders: President - Keith Ryding Vice President - Peter Harrison Secretary - Jolanda Brezovec Treasurer - Michael O’Brien The new Club President Keith Ryding was introduced and Ian was thanked for his past efforts. Keith intimating that it would be a hard act to follow. The meeting was declared closed and the cocktail party continued in full swing. The guests were treated to a magnificent display of fine diamonds which were from Trewarne Fine Jewellery. They are a family owned business and Travis Trewarne spoke about the colour, the clarity, and the carat. But what stands the Hearts on Fire diamonds out from any other is the way they are cut. It is done with such precision that the diamonds sparkle more brilliantly than any other. A couple of guests got to wear a piece or two while people perused the collection with admiration. This was another successful AGM and Club Night, with a big thank you to Janet for organizing the display.

Travis Trewarne

It was great to see that many members took the opportunity to dress up in that something a bit “special“, which added to the fun of the night. The finger food, sweets and coffee plus the tall tables as opposed to seating worked extremely well also. I think we all enjoyed the addition of the serving of champagne on this special night – bubbles and diamonds seemed very appropriate!!! We look forward to continuing that something ‘special” alongside the AGM and the Social Committee is always willing to take suggestions on board, so if you have an idea you would like to share please feel free to share it with Michael O’Brien. by Janet Conheady

The inaugural Targa High Country held November 5 – 7 around Mansfield in Victoria’s High Country had it all: competition, cacophony, crashes and catastrophe. The well-attended Prologue and street party in Mansfield Friday night gee’d up great local enthusiasm. Seven very quick stages Saturday to Whitfield and back were followed Sunday by six more along the southern edge of Lake Eildon to and from Jamieson. Each day finished with a blast up Mt. Buller to the Village to muster for the night.

One EVO10 self-immolated with it’s driver rescuing only the in-car camera for the memories! Tragically, the event was marred Sunday by the death of John Batkin who suffered heart failure in his MGB GT on the last transport stage. PCV members extend their condolences to the Batkin family. 2010 Go Kart Challenge Last year having been corrected in my assumption that the annual Go-Kart Challenge was indeed a “Social” event, by Rex Broadbent, who informed me that this challenge is “anything but social!”, I engaged Rex to assist me with this years event. The revised “competition rules” determined by consultation from our expert 2009 competitors were that the event is run with teams of 2 drivers competing over a 10 lap qualifying session and 15 lap race. One driver from each team must compete in each of the qualifying sessions and team races. Teams must nominate which group A or B their drivers will compete in. The combined race time of the drivers from each team will determine the winning team. An individual 15 lap race made up from the fastest 8 drivers from each team race will then determine the outright individual winner. So we were set – rules agreed, teams determined, groups defined (and provided to Go Kart Sport Racing), and the event fully subscribed. What could possibly go wrong? Well, the groups had not been loaded onto the system, so our first delay was getting a copy of the groups which had to be emailed to the venue. Ultimately though following a 30 minute delay Group A completed their 10 lap qualifying session incident free. Group B (including Rex Broadbent) completed their 10 lap qualifying; only problem times had not been recorded. The venue decided to fix this situation by sending the drivers out for a further 5 laps so that times could be established. This may have worked if somebody thought to tell the drivers! Rex having finished in the top of this group assumed they were being grouped up for a grid start for the main race – and so stopped at the grid, helping this timed qualifying lap time no end. Confusion reigned and after 5 laps the drivers were flagged off. Apart from the driver confusion with some racing some not, and others stopping, it was then realized that the cart numbers and driver names were mixed up. (by this time Rex is ready to explode – a rare but unforgettable sight!). Group A was complaining about the extra practice afforded to Group B, also noting the advantage of warmer tyres. The pizzas had arrived, now getting cold. Group A was then set for their race; Michael Goedheer (Rex’s team member) finished first with a total time of 653.063 seconds, Robert Pepper second 670.722, and David Greg third 675.919. In an attempt to achieve a “fair” grid position for Group B, the venue assured us that they could correct the errors of the mismatched names and carts, and combine the times of the two sessions to develop the grid position. This attempt achieved nothing but further delays (Rex’s blood pressure clearly evident). Group B was then given a further 5 laps immediately prior to their race, to ultimately determine their respective grid positions. Rex clearly happy now to be on the first row of the grid! With his partner winning 20

PORSCHE PARADE

the first event team “Please Pass” seemed assured of a podium – at least. After leading for 4 laps Rex is sandwiched into the barrier at the end of turn one, unable to move he tries valiantly to push the wheels of his cart backwards, to no avail losing 14 positions! Unable to recover, but pushing his cart to its limits has further crashes, ultimately coming twelfth, and also missing qualifying for the individual race. Group B’s results saw Daniel Reynolds first with a total time of 522.404 seconds, Bob Hawker second 526.679, and Alex Van Ravenswaaij third 531.950. The combined teams’ results were then: First:“The Blow Ins” – Alex Van Ravenswaaij and Robert Pepper: 1202.672 Second “Moodies” -James Moodie and Tony Moodie:1204.193 Third: “Hawkir” – Ben Faggetter and Bob Hawker: 1211.518 The final race (pizza’s well and truly cold) with the first 8 placings from both groups was fiercely contested, with equally as much passion and competitiveness as any of our club sprints! Ewan McCue (absent this year), his lap record clearly at risk.

The ultimate winner of the individual race was Daniel Reynolds in a total time of 738.691. Second; David Greig in a total time of 741.388. Third; Alex Van Ravenswaaij in a total time of 744.490. The best time recorded on the night was achieved in this final event by David Greig with a time of 32.469. Congratulations David, you have only just missed taking Ewan’s record of 32.451 set in 2008. At the conclusion of racing we enjoyed our cold selection of pizzas, the awards presentation, and further friendly discussion. It was a mammoth evening concluding well after 11.00pm, the kart racing was the best I’ve seen. The new event rules well accepted; and will be adopted for future events, which may involve an alternate venue. Congratulations to all, and with new records to be set next year, Rex and I look forward to welcoming all competitors in 2011.

Snow ‘n’ Shine Fed Square 2010

22

PORSCHE PARADE

Snow n Shine rather than Show n Shine I feel is a more apt name for the 2010 Federation Square display of PCV members’ cars. I remember last year being a little cloudy but certainly not of the unfavourable conditions received this year. I do admit that of all the items on the checklist for Michael Bailey and I to have sorted to ensure a smooth running of this year’s event confirm weather with the weather gods wasn’t on the list bugger! My involvement this year started out as assisting the Fed Square group until unforeseen circumstances saw myself in the hot seat with Michael Bailey to run the event for 2010. A big

thanks to David Turner for keeping excellent notes and templates from the previous years which made for a relatively smooth running of this years event. I must though remember to have pens for our judges, not unless we can coax Mr Squiggle to come out of retirement for the event. Michael and I received a couple of phone calls and emails the previous day as Melbourne received a very healthy amount of water to boost the much wanting reservoirs, asking if the event was still on. As this was a show and shine, I applied the show business motto and yes the show (and shine) would go on.

Once again a very pleasing number and selection of cars signed up to be on display and represented most of the marque’s registers from a 997 GT2, GT3RS, 944s, 993s, Boxsters, a Cayman, 996s, 997s, 964s, a 928 and numerous Turbos of varying models. Given the weather conditions I believe only 3 cars didn’t show on the day. This is a commendable overall result given conditions and I believe this shows how much our members love having their cars on display and chatting about them with the public.

SUMMER 2010-11

23

It seems that even the public wasn’t deterred by Melbourne’s volatile weather conditions as hundreds of enthusiasts & passers by wandered through, the display chatted with the owners, admired the cars and took numerous photos. Taking the time to wander through the cars was rewarded by some wonderful merchandise made very kindly available by Porsche Centre Melbourne and Porsche Cars Australia. We even managed to get a spot in The Age Newspapers What’s On section of Saturday’s drive. Thanks to John Beurle for teeing this up. This years awards were awarded to: •

RS, RSR & GT3 Register – Rob Raymer

996 & 997 Register – Mark Roseman

Boxter & Cayman Register – Will Darvall

993 Register – Steve Alexander

Mid 911 Register – Martin Wheeler

Torque Tube Register – Ian Polley

Turbo & GT2 Register – Tony Stephens

Members choice award this year was very proudly and kindly donated by Porsche Centre Melbourne in the form of a most desirable Porsche Selection Espresso Coffee Cup set as the trophy. This award went to one of our newest PCV members Martin Wheeler in his 1976 C2 updated 911 SC. Michael O’Brien deserves I think special mention, having had his car on the track the previous day at Winton, driving back to Melbourne and then having this very same car on display which made the current condition of my 993 seem appalling even given the weather conditions. In fact I’m sure most hospitals would be happy to have their surgeries as clean as Michael’s engine bay, photos can be found on the PCV web site.

24

PORSCHE PARADE

Due to some much welcomed feedback and foreseen criticism, next year will see a big change with the judging criteria. The new rules will enable a more relaxed showing and scrutinising, with an option of a more rigorous judging for certain cars. It is with many thanks that I acknowledge the efforts of Michael Bailey, our wonderful judges who must have felt they were marking for something worthy of the Nobel Foundation, of course to each of the entrants for the efforts taken in having the cars in such exemplarity condition for display, To Federation Square and also to the wonderful Fed Square coffee shop that looked after us on the day. A very special thank you goes to Thomas Heberling of Porsche Centre Melbourne and Pamela Ward of Porsche Cars Australia once again for their ongoing and wonderful support of PCV events where possible.

SUMMER 2010-11

27

After 11 hotly contested rounds the final 2010 PCV competition event was held at Winton Raceway. Not too many Webber, Vettel v Alonso final round showdowns here. Despite most year end class results having been well and truly settled long before this event – the opportunity to finish the year with a win or some class points was sure to bring out the competitive spirit in all. Quite simply this has to be my favourite sprint venue by a long margin – I am sure that this is probably much to the disgust of many purists who would typically nominate Philip Island. I guess that I just like the technical challenge of what is a challenging circuit without having to take an over dose of courage pills the night before – (an absolute must to do well at Philip Island as we all know.) So for me, the only significant preparation prior to a Winton event is charge the Dorian, fill the tanks and get to sleep early visualising that perfect lap. All that said I really need to find out where obvious 2010 Rookie of the Year Nick (The Mad Greek) Karnaros finds his supply! There may just be something in the spanakopita – because there seems to be a number of very fast men emerging from the insolvent Hellenic Republic. All set to go then, get up before the birds, head down the Hume but watch out for the boys in blue. Quick stop for half way roadside coffee almost ruins the day before it has really started – overfilled, extra hot, crappy coffee placed in a firmly suspended 911’s drink holder is a recipe for disaster! The other emerging problem is the weather forecast – 100mm of rain forecast for the weekend – sounds more like a Tsunami! Oh well Rain - the great performance leveller, or so they say! Suspect our loyal group of Marshalls might have had a different view. Conditions like these should remind competitors how fortunate we to have these guys’s associated with the Club. Thanks –again for your help and support throughout the year. Rain also meant that that my rushed service call at Welts on the Friday to stiffen up the suspension settings, and fit the harder compound tyres – after Haunted Hills would be a waste of time. So Nick and the team would be busy undoing their earlier work first thing on arrival. Nick and team from Welts have certainly made competition days throughout the year that much easier – with wheel changes, brake bleeds and general assistance. Thanks! 28

PORSCHE PARADE

Not withstanding the forecast of rain, a good field assembled at what was the first sprint day to be held on a Saturday. With intermittent rain in the morning and the likelihood of the heavens opening up early in the afternoon, the key was to nail that limited, one or two dry lap opportunity which would present itself to most competitors. So no real time for mucking around with a warm up lap and too much fiddling with tyre pressures. Sure enough the heavens opened in the early afternoon, bringing an early close to proceedings but presenting a good chance to head to the local and share a few beers and a few stories. Bring on 2011! Open Class True to year ending positions, Lachlan Junior continued uninterrupted with 1st place with a 1.29.9, followed by Peter Fitzgerald on 1.30.1 and Lachlan Senior on 1.36.8. With Matt (The other Mad Greek) Stoupas planning a comeback in 2011, the key message for Matt is take a leaf out of Fitzy’s book and let your customers win! Watch out Bob Hawker! I hear his headed to MM1 class and somehow I doubt he’ll follow Fitzy’s example. MM1 Again true to year ending positions, Bob Hawker displayed his skill and determination in the challenging conditions and took another 1st place with a time of 1.35.1. Bob has taken 11out of 12 round wins – to totally dominate club championship with 250 points! Well done – again! Other placings in MM1 on the day went to Steve McLaughlan 1.36.7in second and Harry Philippou (mad Greek in the making) in third 1.37.2. M2 Dean Taylor capped off a great year with another win and class championship with a fast 1.36.1, meanwhile Jamie Lovett kept up the pressure which he applied all year in 2nd on 1.36.4 and Matt Burton 3rd 1.38.8.

A Class. Phil Treloar was set to take the year end class win as long as he finished no lower than 4th. This was never really in doubt. So the least I could do was finish the year with a sprint win with a time of 1.35.7- not too far away from the Ian (The Professor) Jenkins A class lap record – happy with that given the conditions. Phil Treloar was in second place 1.36.8, and Ian third 1.36.9. B Class Another young gun success Simon Baxter cleaned up again! Another round win with a time of 1.38.5, made it 10 wins for the year, class champion, and a strong runner up to Bob Hawker for the Club Champion. Nick Karnaros was second 1.39.3 and Glenn Cook third 1.40.3. C Class Another round win to Tony Jennings with a time of 1.40.6, which not even young gun and previous class champion Aaron (Subway ) Ireland could eclipse in second 1.42.2 . (I believe Aaron had some car trouble in what was another guest drive - so this result not really surprising). Rumour has it that Aaron has acquired another 911 SC for 2011 – so C Class looks set to remain super competitive. Grant Stevenson rounded out the top 3 on 1.42.6 and beating his good mate Mark Chrzanowski who had a disappointing day by his standards with a persistent engine misfire. D Class Wow another tight result, with experienced Garry Voges 1.42.657 just holding out new class champion John Swan 1.42.690 – the slimmest of margins and Bruce Pollard 3rd on 1.49.985. Suspect that John was happy enough with second for the day – and enough points for the class championship.

PORSCHE PARADE

what’s in your garage?

You want a garage? Has Greg Lovett got a garage for you! With more horse power than 100 Melbourne Cups. Brought up in suburban Kew, Greg seems to remember something about Mike Herrod, motorbikes and The Boulevard. After completing Electrical Engineering at Melb. University, he quickly tired of indoor work and moved into house renovations, after doing his own. Property development, recycling and strategic sales followed, then land sub-division. A country weekender for the family near Mansfield was developed in 1983, with an old house moved from Nagambie, onto a rolling property with a beautiful view to the mountains in the East, seen in the photographs. A permanent move there followed in 2004 and an extension was added to the house in 2007. Porsche History Greg reminded me that the first Porsche he ever looked to buy in 1977 was my 1974 911S black Targa. When he baulked at its modest competition history, he remembers clearly that I looked him in the eye and said “You don’t know much about Porsches, do you?”. He bought a similar Mexico Blue coupe from Alan Hamilton, painted it red, put on flares, added a turbo, joined PCV and went racing. Many other cars followed, mostly highly modified, the sequence being confusing, at least for me. There was a ’72 bodied Ruf Yellow Bird replica, (which subsequently went to Richard Batchelor), a 3.3 Turbo in a ’72 shell with RSR look, and the unforgettable red 934 clone with genuine engine and transmission and 713 HP! I can still see that car circulating at Winton in the early 80’s in a cloud of tyre smoke, shredding a set of P7’s! It subsequently went to Graeme Stockley. There was another white 934 clone, with a 400 HP 3.3 Turbo, which Greg ran in Porsche Cup for 6 years, a 914 with a 3.3 Turbo, also tried in Porsche Cup (too much grunt for the trailing arms). There’s been a 959 clone with a 935 motor, also run in Porsche Cup, a ’96 993 with an RS kit, and a 2001 996 Twin Turbo, plus lots of others!

Present Porsches On visiting the “garage”, the synergy and symphony of planes and Porsches seems perfectly natural! Clockwise from the bottom in the main picture and in following photos are: a ’95 993 factory racing GT2, a ’91 964 RS, a ’96 993 Turbo (now GT2 clone) and a ’74 3 litre RS clone. The 993 GT2 is one of 110 customer race cars made in ’95- 6 and is 1 of 3 Kremer cars raced at Le Mans in Repsol colours in ’95 and ’96. It also raced in the BPR GT series in Europe. It was imported by Don Tryhorn with an EVO front and other mods, but has been returned to factory standard, with race ECU. It has done 1.38 at PI and 1.26 at Winton. The 964 RS is stock, except for a race seat, cage and modified springs and shockers. It has been campaigned by son Jamie all year in M2, coming second in class and 6th outright. The 993 GT2 clone started life as a Turbo, but in typical Greg style has been converted to RWD with Motec, large turbos and 550 HP. The ’74 RS clone has a ’72 body, running a 3.2 dual ignition mechanical injection motor, with 935 heads and crankcase, built by Andial. Jamie has just completed an engine rebuild, under Greg’s supervision. Oh, there’s also a Honda VFR 800 water cooled V-4 Tourer for that little run down the highway. Planes! Greg has always loved flight and has been flying since he was 20. There are 4 planes shown here, some being rebuilt elsewhere and others on charter, 13 in all. From the left in the main picture are a Skybolt, the white biplane with Porsche colour stripes, an Aeronca, all red, and a Dimona motor glider. In the hangar and supporting Greg and Jamie is a Beechcraft Bonanza. SUMMER 2010-11

31

The Skybolt is an American kit from 1980, designed by Steen in the early 60’s for aerobatics. It has a 540 ci turbo motor with 250 HP, naturally the most powerful option. The Aeronca was built in 1946 for budget aviation, flight training and entry level private use. It has a 200 ci motor. The Dimona Hoffmann is a motor glider. The Beechcraft Bonanza C 35 was designed in 1946, built in 1951 and the overall shape and wings have hardly changed since. It runs a 470 ci 6 cyl with 250 HP. It is Greg’s daily driver and cruises at 155 knots. He also has its big brother, the Beechcraft Baron, with twin engines. Not seen at the back of the hangar is a Glassair 3 in bits, designed in the mid 80’s for sports and aerobatics. Greg flies the planes from his property, hopping up to Benalla or down to Essendon. Interestingly, the Benalla Auto Club was formed in the 50’s near the property. Greg reports that Norman Hamilton

Happy Pilot! built an ultra light aircraft in about 1953, the first in the amateur built category. Those garages! Blokes, eat your heart out! There are 2 large sheds in an L shape. One is 40 m wide and 12 deep, divided into 3 parts, the first housing up to 5 cars, the second containing a well equipped workshop and farm machinery and the third housing the Beechcraft. The second shed is about 20 m wide and 30 deep and is a hangar for the other 3 planes, with room in the rear to work on others. There is a 4 m wide shed on the side, also 30m deep. Try backing a trailer down that! What a collection, what an exquisite location and what hospitality we were shown by Jamie, Greg and his friend Jane Lovett (no relation), who fed us at her even more beautiful nearby property!

Tony Hughe’s Martini Porsche featured in the Ballroom

Aren’t we glad we chose a bigger venue! 285 PCV Members and guests attended this year’s Dinner Dance, a whopping 86 more than we squeezed into the Windsor last year and 100 more than the year before, making this one of the biggest Club events in recent years.

PCV Social Director Michael O’Brien (wearing a Martini Racing cap) took the microphone and announced himself as our MC for the evening.

The Social Committee came up with the Porsche Martini Racing Theme for 2010, which gave us a welcome change from the typical black, red and yellow of Porsche that we normally follow. The vibrant navy, aqua and red colours, along with the martini drink lead us to new ideas which made this event that little bit more special. With the service of martinis during pre-dinner drinks from our own “Martini Bar”, to the souvenir martini glasses for each attendee, plus the spectacular Martini decorated 911 Turbo positioned proudly in the ballroom (courtesy of PCV Member Tony Hughes), no one could doubt the Martini Racing theme. To my surprise numerous members had gone to the extra effort of incorporating the Martini colours or racing stripes into what they were wearing and pulling it off well despite the formal dress code.

New President Keith Ryding then gave his President’s speech and thanked our recently retired committee members, namely Ian Jenkins, Roger Randle, Grant Stephenson and Jacqui Collihole, all of who were presented gifts to show our appreciation of their service. To acknowledge the support of family, Ruth Jenkins,

Barbara & Will Darvall

From 7pm guests arrived and enjoyed canapés, beverages and the first chance to catch up with other attendees on the promenade outside the Sofitel’s Grand Ballroom. At 7.30pm the call was made to move into the Ballroom and be seated.

Cheryl Randle, Terri Stephenson and Greg Hannah were presented with a huge bouquet of roses, or a fancy Porsche USB stick in Greg’s case (which he was rapt with).

Michael O’Brien as MC Keith then went on to present our Club Awards. This year’s Club Person of the Year was awarded to joint winners, Peter Cromie and Clair Cromie. Peter and Clair are well known as marshals at our competition events, the Mid 911 Register Captains and attendees at almost all of the Club’s social events. Peter and Clair were completely surprised and overwhelmed by this announcement and quite lost for words when invited to speak. They made a special thank you to Will and Barbara Darvall for support and guidance through the different aspects of the club, all of which they enjoy and will continue to volunteer their time to. Following the service of entrée and a dance bracket Michael O’Brien invited our special guest Dermott Brereton to the microphone for a Q & A session with well known PCV Member and motoring journalist Michael Browning. Michael tried to keep Dermott on the topic of cars, but this was difficult given Dermott’s amazing AFL career. He was more comfortable recollecting his playing days, including the horrendous injuries he and his teammates endured to follow their passion of football. He did speak briefly of his red Ferrari in the 1980’s and his stints as a driver in the Celebrity Grand Prix, but explained that he didn’t think he’d be invited to do it again after a number of accidents.

Dermott remained on stage and assisted Andrew Bonwick and Peter Harrison in presenting the Competition Awards for the 2010 motor sport season. They started with the Top 3 placegetters in each of our 7 Classes, followed by our major overall competition awards. A feature list of all awards and winners can be found nearby. Main course was served and enjoyed, after which Michael completed the night’s presentations with the naming of the 2010 Social Competition winners. This included a lucky draw for 1st place due to a tie in points between Will Darvall and Lindsay St Baker. The rest of the night was free for socialising and dancing to Cheek to Cheek, with the red and blue glow sticks adding more colour and fun to the dance floor. A special mention must be made of Rodney and Pam Baker who were the first couple on the dance floor to display their dancing skills. They provided great entertainment, conversation and envy on my table and I’m sure many others. If memory serves me correct, Rodney and Pam have made a habit of this by doing the same in previous years. Well done Rodney and Pam, I look forward to seeing it again next year! Once again an awful lot of effort went in behind the scenes to put on this annual five hour event. Michael and I must express a big thank you to the Sofitel’s Event Executives Suzi Tehan and Emma Brown for their assistance in making some of our seemingly way off ideas come to fruition. Also to Club Admin Assistant Lisa who joined me at the Sofitel from 3.00pm to assist with all of the last minute chores, and was set to cover me if I got the call that baby Delani needed me, who was living it up in 5 star luxury with hubby as babysitter in a room upstairs. Michael and his team are already planning the Club’s 2011 Annual Dinner Dance, scheduled for Saturday 3rd December. We hope to see you there.

hauntedhills SUNDAY October 3rd 2010

Story: Simon Dunn Photos: Nikko

Bryant Park- Haunted Hills, turned on a near perfect day for the second last completion event of the season. Though it was a little fresh, blue sky promised a nice day. The change in daylight savings had thrown everyone a little, there were a lot of cups of coffee warming the hands during the briefing. Once again scrutineering, marshalling and the general organisation of the day was very professional and ran like clockwork. We cannot offer enough thanks to those who give their time and utilise their expertise so we can get out on the track. The briefing ran like it does at most events until the mention of “concrete barrels”. Something about preserving the track and “concrete barrels”. Amongst the drivers there were a lot of concerned looks and murmurs. I cannot have been the only one thinking “I do not always stay right on the black stuff...” and wondered why I had not conducted a track inspection. Grant Stephenson and I quickly made our way to examine the pretty blue blocks of concrete that skirted the edges of some of the corners. We quickly established that driving around them was a must, going over them would be expensive and make for a long drive home. It was going to be an interesting day of racing on one of the most challenging bits of tarmac in Victoria. It was this round that would see the championship decided for Class A between Phil Treloar and Rick Moscati and the last of the available points for all classes were quickly drying up. This Hill Climb really tests your feel and balance in the car. Until you have the right touch on the accelerator and confidence in the grip, your times will suffer. Once you are confident and driving well, it just takes a poor start to add seconds to your lap time. Class A: Although Phil Treloar and Rick Moscati started the day playing it cool, the class championship

38

PORSCHE PARADE

was riding on their drive today. Phil has been working hard to find the pace in his new car for this season. In March Rick was the fastest of the two here. Phil has now proven to have found his way around the new car taking the class championship by less than four tenths of a second. It will have been a long drive home for Rick. Gary Higgon drove very well to snatch third on the day from Ian Jenkins. The day also saw the previous track record for the figure 8 beaten by the first four with Rick setting a new record of 1:02.36. Phil and Rick both beat the previous record for the clockwise circuit, with Phil bettering his previous record with a time of 57.03. Class B: Simon Baxter, Nick Karnaros and Peter Harrison have been very close in the points, and today’s racing was no different. Nick has been seen at Porsche Centre admiring the new diesel Cayenne. While trying a little too hard to make up the .34 of a second he was behind Simon after the layout change, he proved Porsche may not have any four wheel driving heritage to draw on. Even after the misadventure for a better view of the track, Nick maintained second place to Simon. With Peter taking the final podium place from Glenn Cook. For the Clockwise Circuit Simon Baxter set a new record of 57.51. He also improved the record for the figure eight that he had set earlier in the year with a 1:02.68. Class C: The largest class on the day again saw fierce competition. Mark Chrzanowski with his first win in sometime showed the he and his car are back in form. The semi-retired Aaron Ireland reminded the rest of the class that we still have a lot to learn after taking second place from Tony Jennings. The jovial Peter Matherson missing out on the podium by less than half a second.

During morning runs on the clockwise circuit both Mark Chrzanowski and Tony Jennings beat the previous track record, Tony bettering his old record with a 58.12. Fortunately, I have unwittingly been given the opportunity to ensure the fact that I, Simon Dunn, managed to take the figure eight record with a 1:05.14 and that has been recorded for prosperity. Peter Matherson and Tony Jennings also beat the existing record. However, thirty minutes later Mark and Aaron bettered my lap time with Mark recording a new record of 1:04.20. I subsequently set what may have been a new record by running off the track twice in one lap. Class D: The smallest field with only three cars. Mark Homer won the day, followed by John Swan. David Morgan took out the final place on the podium. Mark and John both bettered the previous track record for the figure eight. Mark recording a new record of 1:05.82. Class Open: Stewart Lachlan drove their car that would have been a hand full on this circuit brilliantly to win the day convincingly. Peter Fitzgerald came second, Graham Lachlan third and Greg Humphries in fourth. Stewart beat the previous records for both track configurations. The new record for the clockwise circuit 54.34 and for the figure eight 1:01.88. Class MM1: Bob Hawker comfortably took out the class by more than four seconds. Followed by Martin Higgs, Michael Herrod and in fourth Ross Taylor who all finished half a second apart. Did anyone notice if they did their laps all in one hit? Bob managed to better the record for the figure eight with 1:01.13. Not only is this the fasted for his class but it is the fastest time in the club.

Class M2:

Porsche Club of Victoria Haunted Hills Sunday, 3 October 2010

The championship for this class was also decided on the day. Dean Taylor won the day and the class championship by less than a second to Jamie Lovett. Third was Jeremy Taylor and Malcolm Batten a close fourth.

Driver

For the figure eight both Jamie and Dean beat Jamie’s old record. Dean set a new record of 1:01.17. Thanks again for to all those that make these days possible. The PCV competition “family” is one of a kind and something to be cherished. Well done to everyone, whether you won your class or just had a go.

On a crisp Spring morning 57 competitors and a bunch of Entree drivers turned up for our one visit to Calder for 2010. It was a good turnout considering that the weather forecast had been less than optimistic and Calder hasn’t been our favourite track for some time as we all await the much anticipated track upgrade. The rain never arrived; the cool weather turned out to be perfect for quick times and in combination with an unexpectedly sticky track, led to two track records being broken. Who’d have thought? The competition for the day was, as usual, closely fought out in most classes. In Open class, Stewart Lachlan knocked off Peter Fitzgerald by less than 4 tenths in times of 61.10 and 61.47 seconds respectively, both of them in wildly differing GT3 variants. The Lachlan vehicle showed up again in third place in 64.25 seconds, driven this time by Graham. Congratulations go to Bob Hawker in MM1 class who produced one of the day’s track records with his winning time of 62.433 seconds. I’m told that Steve McLaughlan first broke the previous record to get a nostril in front after which Bob had a real go and produced his ultimate time that was around a second faster than the previous record. Harry Philippou came third in a time of 65.10 seconds. Bob must like the track as he now holds both the MM1 and M2 lap records at Calder and they are the only two classes he has competed in.

40

Dean Taylor took first prize in M2 with a time of 64.68 seconds, which shaded second placegetter Michael Vati’s time of 64.95 seconds. Not far behind the two of them was Jamie Lovett in 65.31 seconds. It seems that M2 is the battle of the 964 RS’s, which was the car of choice for the first four placegetters. Maybe Joe DiBartolo needs to rip out some more furniture from his 964 C2 before it is down to competitive minimum weight. The next track record was set by Ian Jenkins in cleaning up A class in 64.207 seconds. Congratulations to Ian for the record which adds to those he also holds in class A at Winton and Sandown. Phil Treloar’s second place time of 64.85 seconds would have looked impressive on any other visit to Calder. Rick Moscati was less than a couple of tenths behind Phil in third place in 65.99 seconds. In B class Peter Harrison in 66.23 seconds beat Simon Baxter‘s time of 66.25 by a whisker which equates to less than a metre difference at the Start/Finish line. Nick Karnaros came third in 67.6 seconds but managed only 1 run before his car died. Me thinks he would have given the winners a run had his car held together longer. Meanwhile, Mark Chrzanowski won C class in 68.79 seconds, shading Simon Dunn’s 68.83, also a very close result. Grant Stephenson followed up in third place in 69.40 seconds just ahead of Peter Matherson.

Garry Voges made a strong showing in his ever reliable 944 S2 to win D class in 70.49 seconds. Cliff Herbison came in second in 71.26 with quick rookie John Swan in third place in 72.46 seconds. D class has been a small, select and competitive group this year and it means a place may (or may not) be easier to achieve, but the drivers each get many less points for their efforts and success. Star of the Day award must go to Nick Karnaros. Not being content to call it quits when his 911 packed it in so early, Nick was seen leaving the track with his Porsche on a tray truck only to return a short while later driving a gleaming lump of Yankie metal in the form of a magnificently restored 1970’s Corvette Stingray. Whilst it might have seemed out of place amongst a sea of Porsches but it sure attracted a crowd. It looked so inviting that there was even a brief and serious discussion regarding the possibility of getting it scrutineered and him being allowed to run it in place of his busted track Porsche, but in “Other” class. It may have been a good thing that this was not pursued. While Nick was confident it would be quick in a straight line, he was not so sure it would stop or go around corners. Even offering to open the gate at the end of the main straight didn’t convince him. It was definitely not a 911 then.

“Last Social Run - In Car Harmony Guaranteed”

Barb and Will were once again called into duty for the last run of the year. Thanks guys! The social events are popular with lots of “return” and “new” members. After Keith Ryding our new President made the new members welcome and roll call was completed by Barb, it was off from our starting position “grids” in the rain! The Porsches crawled out of the park and made their way in a northerly direction along Plenty Road. Over 50 cars purred up the highway and we were glad to be in the car as it was raining. The travelling was slow through Mill Park due to road works. Will had warned us - so no surprises here. We turned off at Whittlesea, finally we were then in the country and a totally new perspective confronted us. The road opened up as we left the suburbs behind. The paddocks were flooded which was a welcoming sight after so little rain and the threat of ongoing drought. The drive became more interesting with even more water flowing over the roads. The Porsches wound their way round the countryside with many having to dodge the large areas of water where swollen creeks and roads became one. We made a few turns and went through Wallen, up Pretty Sally Hill and on to Kilmore. The greenness of the countryside made a spectacular backdrop for the parade of cars that passed through. We made our way through Broadford where we saw

44

PORSCHE PARADE

the track where competition will be holding an event in 2011 - it looked fantastic. I am sure a few of our social drivers might brave the challenges and join competition in entree class next year! (A little plug for the competition side of the club.) First stop on the run was Strath Creek. Gary Hendy the Captain of the Strath Creek CFA thanked the Porsche Club Vic for their $700.00 donation in their new (but yet to be officially opened) fire station. He talked about the efforts of the CFA and touched off the sad memories and events of “Black Saturday”. He explained how the members of the CFA fought the fires out of town only to be called back to fight the fire in Strath Creek, they lost 30 houses and two members of the community. Gary made a special mention of the “stupid” drivers on the highway that were continuing their journey to Melbourne even though the fire was now jumping over the highway. He wanted to point out that nothing is that important to put your life at such risk? Denise the Communications Officer for the Strath Creek CFA talked about the fund raising for the restoration of their little church and the waterwheel which where lost in the Black Saturday fires. She also spoke of the money from the government fund to renovate their hall

which housed and feed a lot of the firefighters during “Black Saturday”. While we indulged ourselves with sweet and savoury home made treats at the CFA, Tony Hughes placed his stunning Martini racing colour Porsche in a prime position for people to admire. This was excellent timing in readiness for our Martini themed ball on Saturday 4th December. Some members talked of the outfits that they would be wearing, and yes that included the guys. In fact for those who attended the ball the brightest outfits belonged to the guys - they certainly got some inspiration. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Will’s perfectly colored outfit and Raff’s bright blue suit - thanks for getting into the spirit of the night! Back to the run......................................... The Porsches made their way towards Flowerdale where we turned left onto the highway towards Yea. There were some small hazards on the way with the recent downpours the road was flooded in parts and concerned motorists signaled the oncoming traffic that there was a hazard up ahead. In fact the whole trip amazed us as we had never seen so much water along this highway. For those that have travelled this road frequently it was a pleasant surprise to see a sight of flourishing vegetation surrounded

social

by overflowing streams and bulging dams. We skirted round Yea and turned left again towards Trawool. We were to lookout for the red Porsche that Will and Barb had parked as an appropriate landmark. The cars turned carefully into the car park with no hand brake turns made. (This had been jokingly suggested prior to leaving the CFA) Will and Barb did plan this trip three years ago and had honed it to have perfect instructions but still we have drivers who lost their way. Don’t worry they found their way to our “lunch” spot, the lovely Trawool Valley Resort. Michael and Felix our Social and Deputy Social Directors made sure that all were “watered and feed” before they asked our new members’ partners to come to the front. Felix was behind his camera capturing the whole event. They were asked to introduce themselves and to accurately describe their cars. The two ladies Kathryn Steenson and Bronwyn Owen described their cars as “white”. They could not elaborate any further and partners Mark Dempsey and Randal Leacock were not about to help them out.

46

PORSCHE PARADE

Nick Kirby who was driving his 2004 silver Boxster had no trouble and had an advantage as he was actually driving. They still had another task to perform and that was to draw the winners of the bottles of wine. Michael Dodd’s name got drawn out first and then his wife’s Susan was drawn. They got to take home four bottles of local wine - don’t know who they had to pay to get that result ??? Stephen Sulewski won the remaining two bottles. A good day was had by all and as usual Colin and Julia were last to leave. There was a special scenic route designed by Will and Barb for the drive home. As a co-driver Jolanda was happy to report that “in car harmony was guaranteed” and the promise was delivered. Last run for 2011 came to a close! We thank Will and Barb for setting up the run and doing such a good job of it. Organizing these trips is very satisfying and we are always on the look out for fantastic courses and wonderful lunch spots. If you are interested in assisting or organizing one why not drop Jolanda a quick email through the PCV website.

presidentsday SUNDAY November 14th 2010

Sory: Bob Hawker Photos: Ron Widdison & Felix Rieniets

O k , where to start: Oh yes, at the end is the way. Calder Park - President’s day, out we go to the West where the buffalo roam. We seemed to have some difficulty in filling the numbers for this event. With 2010 competitive season culminating with the President’s day some of the competitive drivers amongst the club were nowhere to be seen. Maybe it was the weather, with an expected Armageddon, or the track, or Bathurst luring many of the drivers or possibly leading up to Christmas? Whilst on the subject of Bathurst, rumour has it that one of the best young drivers in the club; Dean Taylor was out doing some phenomenal time of 2:34 in his 964 RS in what is a fantastic time. Ross not far behind him either I hear. Note for PCV club, maybe we should have Bathurst on our list of competitions for 2011. Onto sunny Calder. In fact I am not sure if the sun shines in the west, as I haven’t been to Calder on a sunny day, nor without a hurricane or something equally life threatening. Only kidding! Grant, Mark, Nick and others in the west. As per normal, a few wines the night before, little sleep and out to the track for a nice day. No competition on, so we are all quite relaxed

48

PORSCHE PARADE

and ready to drive, but ah, it seems we have a small problem here, whereby the weather gods don’t realize that winter is over and the drizzle is local, albeit nearly all over. Unfortunately for those who know this track, that rain and Calder don’t combine well. The turn coming onto the main straight will test the skill and patience of any hot blooded driver. Some may even say too difficult. Our normal drivers briefing went off without a whimper, with Will Darvall letting us know the rules of the day and giving some warning of what to expect, so now it was up to us, the drivers. Well, we certainly saw a little bit of excitement on the day, with just a couple of minor incidents sighted, didn’t we? From feedback from many drivers, we all seem to enjoy the day, with the chance to take friends, family, or other people at the track wanting a ride in a Porsche around the track. Personally, I think it is a great concept and one that I thoroughly enjoy. The rules of engagement allow don’t allow for “out of order” driving, but only very safe

driving with the simple rule “stay on the black stuff” which is confidence inspiring for the respective passengers. From my experiences, I have enjoyed taking many passengers on the Pres Days and it seems that all passengers either lie or actually did enjoy the drive around, doing full speeds down straights, but braking a little earlier than normal for extra safety. Lots of smiles from many people, particularly those anxious passengers waiting in pit lane, helmets by their sides, waiting, waiting…..shaking. It was interesting viewing in the morning, watching every driver work their magic coming onto the straight, with a modicum of twitching at the rear end on each change of gear. That must have been such fun for the passengers, surely. We saw blokes testing their cars for 2011, with the little annoying bloke Stoupas in Graham Gorman’s blue bullet. We had Ben in his lovely new 993, putting his hard work to the test and

SUMMER 2010-11

49

We had Brian Fitt in his equally beautiful 993 RS, getting all prepared for next year and then we had this fantastic new 997 GT3 with Tim Williams also getting to know his new beast. Everyone seemed to be smiling.

To finish, I would like to thank the committee and organizers for doing such a great job all year, as they do every year. What an enormous amount of work they do. On track days, I am not quite sure how it all just happens. A big thank you to Ian Jenkins for his great efforts as President, who then races around each event so successfully. I’m not sure how you do it all Ian, but you do it well.

We had Nick Kanaros wanting to put his 4 million hp Black Corvette out there, but other competitors worry a little about Nick in his Porsche and certainly didn’t want him flying past them in ‘The Vette’! Congratulations to Nick for his well earned win as Rookie of the Year.

To congratulate the marshals’ for fronting up all year is just amazing. I am always amazed at the dedication they show, particularly when we have those dreary days, cold and wet and they still turn up to help out. Thank you to all concerned.

coming up smiling. Great to see Ben out again next year. (Not so sure about the little Geek though!) Did I say geek, sorry, I meant Greek.

50

PORSCHE PARADE

Thank you to the club for organising such a successful social event at the Sofitel, where we all enjoyed a great night. Some greater than others, but I figure you only live once, so may as well enjoy it. Congratulations to all winners of all classes and I look forward to seeing you next year. All the best wishes for a Merry Christmas.

Story & Photos: Dean Taylor

As we walked through the terminal at Essendon airport, about to climb aboard our private plane destined for Bathurst airport, the look on our pilot and co pilot’s faces were priceless. They basically read: “You bunch of city slickers, we told you to pack lightly!” This was in response mainly to one Gary “Giuseppe” Higgon and his suitcase on wheels, but also Dean and Ross’s poor excuse for packing ‘lightly’. Undeterred, we climbed aboard, knowing that we could be fast asleep in minutes if desired. Upon arriving in Bathurst, we were greeted by a downpour. Just the thing to inspire confidence before a 3 day sprint weekend! Watching the cars come down Conrod on from our hotel was certainly entertaining in the torrential rain. An 8am drivers briefing was over in minutes, and we were out on the track at 8.30am, spending the morning familiarizing ourselves playing ‘follow the leader’ with some of the instructors present. These included Paul Stokell, Matt Hunt, and our very own Peter Fitzgerald. The afternoon was spent by most getting the instructors to drive the competitor’s cars around, showing them apexes and smooth parts of the track- something that would have taken far longer than 3 days to learn

for ourselves! With Friday over, we all felt a little overwhelmed with the fact that we were about to ‘race’ this crazy track for the next 2 days! Saturday morning began with an ‘open track’: basically go out and drive as hard as you dared! The instructors were still on hand at this point, and Ross and Gary made good use of Fitzy’s spare time. I was trying frantically to solve a small oil leak, so did not make it out until the last session of the day. The Saturday afternoon’s purpose was to categorize each entrant according to their speed for the sprint event on the Sunday. The qualifying times were as follows: Ross- 2.42.6- Gary- 2.43.7 and Dean – 2.36.6 Sunday was easily my favourite day of 2010. Actually, the most fun I have had since I can remember. Five scheduled sprint sessions ensured that there was no rush to find the limits in the first session. I didn’t think this through logically unfortunately, and posted a PB of 2.34.6. This lap was actually my ‘in’ lap, but as I was so focused, I went around to complete the lap, oblivious to the imminent blasting I was about to receive from the Clerk of Course. Let me just tell you it was worth it. Every second of it. Even if Natsoft wouldn’t show my time as it was deemed ‘an illegal lap’. Not even a cheeky greenback would persuade the kind ladies in the

timing tower. Ross and Gary demonstrated the conventional approach and posted their fastest times later in the day. Both showed enormous improvements, with Ross posting a PB of 2.37.7 (next time old chap) and Gary with a PB of 2.41.7. The sheer fact that we each dropped at least 2 seconds off our PB each day, shows just how much commitment ‘The Perfect Lap’ would require. I though I had strung such a thing together, but it all went rather pear shaped at “The Chase”, with a high speed 180 degree in front of many spectators watching from their hotel balconies. After this, I realized that I would be better off getting the car home in one piece and come back next year, unscathed. Special mention goes to Jesse Bryan, who accompanied us for the whole weekend to assist with general car duties, including ferrying passengers to and from the hotel in the cars (that was punishment apparently). Another special mention to our pilots for the weekend, Matt and Aaron. As prepared as we were, nothing quite prepared any of us for the sight of the Maranello Motorsport customers boarding their Jet to get back to Melbourne, whilst we had to make do with a ‘toy Baron’ to fly us home. Next time hey Gary;)

Mid 911 Register

Just remembering the great times we had last year on the N.E. Tour, Paula and I were all agog with anticipation, for the whole week prior to our leaving to get to the meeting place for this year’s Tour, the Armour Motor Inn at Beechworth. Leaving home just after mid-day, for the 400 kms plus journey and thinking we would be early, we were surprised to find 12 of the anticipated 21 cars, already assembled in the private carpark allocated to our group at the Inn. It wasn’t long before there were four Boxsters, two 996s, two 997s and twelve mid 911s, including Ray & Sue Baty’s gorgeous red Speedster, in attendance. Their 39 occupants were soon all gathered around the cars for pre-dinner nibbles, drinks and of course chit chat and gossip about last year’s event! In our rooms we had each found very informative, well presented packages of information about our travels for the next two days, which had been put together by our Tour organisers, Greg & Andrea Keen and Gary Paring & Esther Langenegger , In the early evening dusk, it soon became rather cold out in the open, so we all decided to head for the Green Shed Bistro, where dinner had been arranged. After a short walk, we were quickly ensconced at our tables, after being warmly welcomed by the restaurateurs and their even warmer open fire. After a lovely meal and some fine wines, our members slowly wended their way back to the Inn, except for this writer’s group, who were as usual last out of the door! 54

We awoke to a beautiful Beechworth morning and soon noticed that overnight we had been joined by our final car, a rather attractive Honda NSX! Our group was now 21 cars and 41 members. As there were so many of us, breakfast was to be held in two sessions. We were in the first group, so promptly made our way to the Beechworth Bakery, where a very pleasant continental breakfast was to be had. Each car set off independently from the Inn following our very concise route instructions and notes for the day. We were soon travelling along delightfully deserted N.E. Victorian roads, passing through Yackandandah, Tangambalangah, where we saw Mel Gibson’s old ‘watering hole’ and glimpses of Lake Hume, on our way to Tallangatta, (the town that moved), for morning tea at MJ’s Bakery. After refreshments, we had a short journey to take advantage of a photo opportunity over looking the old Tallangatta village. Evidently in 1954, the old Tallangatta, with a population of 950, was moved over 8 kms to avoid being drowned by the slow filling of the reservoir, Lake Hume. In recent years because of the drought the reservoir had been virtually dry and it was planned for us to take photographs of the old Tallangatta, which had re-emerged from the receding waters. Ironically the more recent, very heavy rains had been more than sufficient to resubmerge the old town, so we never actually got to see the old Tallangatta!

We then set off again, this time in convoy through 36 kms of ‘twisties’, which was very exhilarating for all of us. The majority of the group subsequently stopped for another photo opportunity overlooking the huge Lake Hume, with Albury and Wodonga in the distance. This writer and a certain blue Boxster, missed the parking place for the stop altogether and travelled on to the next break in our journey at the impressive Hume Dam wall. After a walk and time spent examining the construction, we continued on in the direction of Wodonga, passing the dried out and derelict Hume Weir Trout Farm, closed for Public Liability reasons, the old Hume Weir Racing circuit and the original Bonegilla Migrant Centre. Eventually to arrive at another photo location, Woolshed Falls. Following the recent rains, the falls were in magnificent full flood and luckily for us, Wayne & Lindsay in their Boxster were aware of a police camera hidden in the trees on the way to the falls! From the falls we then made our way to the village of Stanley for lunch at the Stanley Pub. Recent reviews have given this establishment a great write up, which we can now fully endorse. Unfortunately, this lovely meal was missed by Neville & Jeanette Sampson, who were, somehow ill directed and led up the proverbial ‘garden path’, by a misbehaving GPS. What was left of the afternoon was given as ‘free’ time, where many of the ladies practiced some not so free, retail therapy and some of the males

were ‘encouraged’ to enjoy beer tasting at the Beechworth Brewery as compensation!

group of our members, who wished to partake of the late-night Beechworth Ghost Tour.

beautiful countryside, which most of us actually never saw!

Dinner was held at the neighbouring Nicholas Hotel, where we were given the balcony in an indoor/outdoor setting on the second floor, beautiful. The food was a generous selection of Tapas dishes and great music was provided by ‘Hairy Canary”.

Please read Donna Fabris’s hilarious account of their adventures below.

As on the previous Tour, prizes were given for the best prepared car; a trophy, won easily by Ray & Sue’s Speedster; the most sonorous exhaust note; another trophy, won by Rafael & Donna Fabris’s 1990 Green C4, which sounded more like a V8, and the ‘Get Lost’ award, a compass, was a lay-down misere win for Neville & Jeanette. A great night was had by all, except for a small

After waiting awhile for Greg & Andrea to confirm all the roads were navigable after the recent rains, we set off at our leisure, on a Mystery Run with Quiz, where we had to answer 22 questions that tested our navigation and observation skills. Very interesting, especially when you keep seeing group cars going in different directions to yourselves. We were travelling in the most

Nevertheless, we all seemed to find our way to the Winery and Café of Bailey’s of Glenrowan , where we had the most enjoyable lunch. The wines were superb and several of us joined Bailey’s Wine Club by taking additional supplies home. Two cars, those of Graeme & Muriel Aberline and Ray & Sue Baty, managed to get all the answers correct and each won free extra bottles of Bailey’s fine wine. I must say on behalf of everybody on the Tour a most sincere thank you to our organizers, Greg & Andrea and Gary & Esther, for a most enjoyable week-end. Marvellous, can’t wait until next year????

Sunday’s breakfast was held a short drive away in the well preserved old buildings of Beechworth’s La Trobe University.

Beechworth Ghost Tour After a lovely dinner at the Hotel Nicholas, a few keen PCV members wanted to party on. Down stairs in the main bar a few more drinks were had, and a little breathalyser testing to see who had had the biggest night. Gary and Esther won by a long shot! At about midnight, the friendly publican drove Gary, Esther, Donna, Raf, Maree, Alchemy and Jennifer out to LaTrobe Uni where they would partake in the Beechworth Ghost Tour. Once at the Uni, a group of Gen Y’ers were waiting to join us for the tour. At 12am, off we went on a walking tour of the historic psychiatric institution that remains empty and

by: Donna Fabris appears to be in its original run down condition. It was cold, NO ghosts, annoying Gen Y’ers, NO ghosts, painful tour guide, and did I mention NO ghosts. For 2 hours we heard about the barbaric psychiatric treatments of the late 19-century. Can you believe this institution only closed in 1990’s! At 2am our tour concluded with our tour guide stating we had to find our own way home. Still in our giggly alcohol state, we didn’t even know which way was the front gate. As brilliant timing would have it, the Uni security guard pulled up in a mini van that was full of “stuff”. We asked if he could give us a ride to the gate.

He asked how many people, and before he had a chance to change his mind, 5 people jumped into the back seat, and two into the front seat. With hands and feet everywhere, this crazy Scotsman put his foot flat on the peddle (he must have known we were Porsche drivers and thought we would be impressed by doing land speed records at 2am), and kindly stopped outside our motel. A BIG thanks to him, as it would have been a bloody cold walk. So after 4 hours sleep and no ghosts, we joined the other PCV members at breakfast where we got to share our midnight adventure.

Run to Mt Macedon Boxster/Cayman Register

It was hard to believe the weather bureau’s prediction of a warm clear day, as quite a few of us had experienced heavy fog on their way to our meeting place, but fortunately everyone made it on time and the fog started to lift as we left Doncaster.

We stopped for Devonshire teas in Hogan’s Coffee Shop in Wallan, the scones were delicious but the coffees were a little slow to be served. As the run was not terribly long, there was no hurry and we had plenty of time to chat to each other and take some great shots of the cars.

It was great to see John and Pauline Kirby back to Melbourne from hibernation in North West Australia, as well as a few new comers, Jaap and Anne De Wit and Gerard Denton who we welcomed before getting on the road. The brand new black Boxster Spyder of Bruce and Aranka Young was much admired as well as their enthusiasm in braving the cold having already taken the hood of their car down.

Well refreshed, we were on our way to Romsey. This Wallan-Darrawith Road is a great little road that really shows how well our cars can handle. By then, all those with convertibles had their hood down taking full advantage of the sunshine.

After a quick review of the plan for the day, we got on the road. The run took us North-East as we drove towards Warrandyte along the meandering Yarra River, the traffic was not busy and the drive enjoyable. From then, the challenge started as we ventured on the windy roads towards Kangaroo Ground, Cottles Bridge, and Arthurs Creek towards Whittlesea. The scenery was splendid and by then the sky had become clear and you could see miles away the rolling hills, the green paddocks, the dams full to the brim, a real treat for those who did not have to keep their eyes on the road and for those who put their roof down.

56

Then we were on our way to Woodend, where some took the opportunity to do a little shopping. It is a lovely country town, full of interesting shops and galleries. I heard, to my surprise, that Holly Lewandowski had bought a dog. Thankfully for the dog that would have had to sit in the car the whole afternoon, I discovered later, that it was not a real one. We arrived at The Braeside Cafe where we enjoyed some pre-dinner drinks in the sunshine of the back garden. It was the prelude to a lovely three (small) course lunch, accompanied by a glass or two of local wines. As usual, we finished the afternoon by asking a new member, Anne De Wit, to start drawing the first of the three door prizes which were won by Wilson & Grace Johnson, Mark & Sylvia Behan and Martin Jones & partner Denne William. Everyone seemed to have had a great day.

On Ya Bike 993 Register

With special thanks to Michael Chapman the 993 register was given the opportunity to visit a rather special location tucked away in the back streets of Richmond, which housed a very special and rare collection of pre Porsche transport in the form of Mulga Bill’s nemesis the bicycle. I remember my many years sharing the roads with cars on my trusty bikes, from the dragsters of the 70s, BMXs and Mountain Bikes in the 80s, pretending that they had the magical turbo button which would propel my 2 wheeled machine blistering towards the horizon….. hang on I still do that in my 993….. but the point is I knew what bikes were, I’d experienced numerous times the grazed knees and elbows, also being thrown from one as I negotiated rather badly a jump and woke up in the emergency section of hospital of where I felt I had something in common with my memories of the fabled Mulga Bill and his bone jarring Penny Farthing of which I’d read all about during my primary school years. Stepping into this unassuming Richmond property I discovered I didn’t know bikes at all. Our hosts for the evening were the very hospitable and charming Paul & partner Charlie. From the moment you stepped foot inside you could tell this was a very special collection and one that had been assembled from someone very passionate about the sport, in fact they likened themselves to Porsche drivers and quoted being “connoisseurs of fine machinery” but Paul is the obsessive collector. Charlie & Paul certainly knew their stuff and embodied bicycles, we were treated to stories of cycling around Australia and Europe. The collection hosted not only bicycles but, memorabilia in the form of signs and photographs to parts and tools that spanned a couple of hundred years. Each section complete with very informative plaques to assist the uneducated with what they were viewing. Paul’s obsession started at the age of 12 where his role was to mend and maintain the fleet of family bikes. Where he bought a 1930 tandem and was then given by a neighbour an 1890s tandem. After migrating to Australia in 1975 he found the Australian climate to be perfect for biking and around 1979 came to the conclusion that bikes were going to be a part of Paul’s life being able to ride all year round and thus set about trying to obtain some history into this machinery.

Paul set about investigating where the machinery came from and who made it. After setting out to find an antique bicycle he believes he cleaned Australia out of antique bicycles and being Australia’s most successful bicycle collector is able to choose which era to collect from. Due to needing to clean out room he’s moved on most of his early Australian 20th century collection and now collects bikes from up until 1895. Basically unless it’s really weird and rare if it has pneumatic tyres he’s not interested. One such rare bike is a world war 1 German Army Bike. Due to the German’s not having access to much rubber with the exception for their trucks, came up with the solution of a leather strip on the outside of the wheel but with springs that looked like valves that provided the support and cushioning.

Paul’s collection consists of hundreds of bikes but a few that rate mentioning include a La Souplette French built bent wood bike with a wooden frame and wooden wheels from 1897. A shaft ride bike made by the Quadrant company where the gearing system meant that the bike was chainless, but unfortunately didn’t transpire due to costs and the flexibility of a bike frame that played with the mechanism. Another is one of Paul’s favourites, is a very rare shaft drive that if you back peddle changes into a second gear, peddling backwards faster caused the brake to engage. A very complicated hub on this bike incorporating a two speed gearbox and break in a hub on a bike in 1902. Cars weren’t that developed by this year, in fact Paul reminded us all that everything for the motor car was invented for the bicycle originally, the steering, suspension, pneumatic tyres were developed first for the bicycle, the obvious exclusion of course being the engine. Probably one of the most intriguing bikes not just to hear of but to see in the flesh, is a replica of one of the most original bicycles, an 1819 Hobby

Horse. The first commercially successful twowheeled, steerable human-propelled machine where the rider would straddle the frame and propel themselves by the use of their feet, similar to how one would on a skateboard or scooter. Created and patented in 1817 by German Baron Karl Von Drais before the concept was picked up by a number of British manufacturers. Of course the collection wouldn’t be complete without one or two or three or four Penny Farthings, Mulga Bill would stir in his bone shaken grave otherwise. Charlie expertly explained that before gearing on a bike, the big wheel enabled the rider to cover more distance at a greater speed with as one peddle revolution equalled one wheel revolution. The bigger the wheel the greater the distance covered. The limitation of course being leg length when one could no longer reach the pedals. One of Paul and Charlies Penny Farthings include one once owned by the mayor of Geelong.

The racing version of the Penny Farthing are lighter, have a skinny tyre, the bone shaker racing stated in Australia around 1869 and was even held at the MCG. Racing was in the form of a held start where someone would hold the bike and the rider you would propel themself from the back step and into the saddle as they began to peddle. Charlie added that these bikes are very comfortable to ride and offer a different view whilst riding, even over people’s hedges! At the risk of making the reader tempted to turn to another article I’ll conclude my story on this magnificent collection and our hosts. I’ve honestly just scratched the surface with the bicycles on display, if you are interested in bicycles and get the opportunity to visit, the collection is very impressive and Paul & Charlie certainly are keen to share the history and adventures with you. Thank you to Michael Chapman for making this event available to us. SUMMER 2010-11

Otway run Turbo Register

On Sunday the7th of November 3 of us joined the 996/997 Register run through the Otway’s, unfortunately on the introduction speech I put myself in the firing line indicating that we would try not to get too far ahead which was received

(rightfully so) with a unanimous rebuttal. This put some pressure on us but thankfully we were able to hold the Turbo flag high with some responsible spirited driving arriving first for lunch, as evidenced with Andrew and myself in

The route took us from Geelong along some wonderful back roads through the Otway’s which proved a little challenging with varying levels of damp spots to our Lunch stop at the Aire Valley Guest House in the Otway’s. After an enjoyable lunch and great conversation recounting the morning drive we had a short drive further up the Otway’s to the Fly Tree Top Walk. Then from there it was a leisurely cruise back home with various route options. 58

an empty car-park at the wonderful Aire Valley Guest House, closely followed by the normally aspirated group.

We were very grateful to Stephen and his members allowing us to share their 996/997 register run and the challenge we now have is to try and generate enough interest within the Turbo register to be able to run our own event in 2011. To ensure you do not miss out on our next event please keep an eye out for future Turbo register events as they are sent out. I will try to meet a few more of you at the Annual Dinner.
