horizontally opposed Welcome to first issue of Porsche Parade for this year and this decade! This issue arrives a littler earlier than usual as we are moving the release dates back a few weeks to ensure you get your December issue before Christmas. We are living in interesting times. As I write this article with the Corona Virus baring down upon us. The Geneva Motor Show was closed last week, and we had to watch the eagerly awaited 992 911 Turbo on YouTube. As these shows continue to dry up, we will see more and more products released digitally. I dare say manufactures will prefer this with little or no cost to them produced in their controlled environment. The 911 Turbo is our feature car this issue and I hope you enjoy the read. On the subject of the 911, Porsche continues to ensure us that its flagship model will always be petrol driven. Personally, I find this pill hard to swallow. As other Marques are pushing hard into the hybrid and finally electric realm; Porsche will be forced to follow suit to keep up with performance and emission targets. Porsche developed the amazing 918 hybrid Spyder eight years ago so it has the technology. And with it’s new Taycan Turbo flagship already faster in a straight line in its first incarnation it will be impossible for them to allow the 911beaten by its four door cousin.

“Porsche Parade” is the official magazine of The Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. (ACN 005 727 0942)

The challenge for all the car makers is getting the transition phase right without sending all its dealer network broke in the process. The dealers currently rely on servicing for their business model. If you pull that overnight as electric cars will not need much more than a tyre rotation and brake fluid flush and the whole sector could fold like a pack of cards.

Publisher: The Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. PO Box 911, Kew, Victoria 3101 web site: www.pcv.com.au email: pcv@pcv.com.au Advertising

The Dealer model was invented by Henry Ford to improve his cash flow. Tesla has gone back to basics to make itself more competitive by not using dealers. You simply view the car in a shop (like the one in Chadstone shopping centre) and order your car online where it is built to your specification. Of course, this means Tesla does need to carry stock nor discount it during lean months or EOFY sales.

Rowan Burnett mobile: 0417 540 957 email: advertising@pcv.com.au

The other reason the industry needs to slow the transition is the availability of electricity. If we all had electric cars tomorrow the grid simply could not cope with us all charging our cars at night. Battery technology still needs to develop and drop in price to enable us to store and reuse the energy we harvest form our solar panels during the day.

president’s message

Welcome to the latest edition of Porsche Parade. It has been a great start to the New Year for the Club with some different and exciting new events.

different ways. We are also working with the Porsche Clubs in the other states to assist them in systems development and to support their motorsport events.

The first of these was our family picnic day held in the gardens of Billilla Historic Mansion in Brighton. This turned out to be a very enjoyable day with groups of families and friends scattered around under the trees in the beautiful mansion grounds. What seemed like a very old fashioned picnic setting was marvellously offset by a row of brand new Porsches from Porsche Centre Brighton lined up in front of the mansion. There were many new members that came along on the day and the venue gave them a great opportunity to meet and mix with other members and their families. I think we will definitely lock in this style of event in the future as a great way of starting off the year.

The membership of PCV continues to climb which is great for the Club, but it does put pressure on the committees to continue to develop events and provide the level of professional service that we have come to expect and which PCV prides itself on. PCV is ably supported by a range of hard working volunteers, on the various committees through to the many contributors to the articles in this magazine. If you enjoy the Club events and feel that you would like to contribute, please speak to any of the committee members at your next event.

The other different to usual recent event was our first Club Night of the year held at Porsche Centre Brighton. This dealership has recently extended its premises and it was our first opportunity to experience this new space. The big difference on the night was that it was predominantly a stand up affair which encouraged a lot of mixing between members and also with the PCB staff who were very keen to show off their new facilities including the workshop and the high technology equipment that has been installed to support what are becoming, our more and more complex vehicles. This format seemed to work very well with good feedback from a large number of attendees.

I don’t believe there is any other car marque that engenders the enthusiasm and following of Porsche. They do design and build truly great automobiles. PCV is here to provide a forum for enthusiasts to engage and develop friendships around the common interest of Porsches. If you haven’t yet attended a Club event and are perhaps a little unsure about what to expect, come and give one a try. You will be welcomed as a first time attendee and have the opportunity to enjoy the company of other Club members along with the sounds and excitement of the best sports car marque in the world.

In addition to the two events described above, we have had two competition track events. One at Phillip Island and one at Bryant Park near Moe. Two register runs and a Coffee and Porsches morning near the beach at Elwood. Quite an active start for just the first two months of 2020. This pace will only increase in the year ahead so keep your eyes on the PCV website and the email updates so that you don’t miss out. We are continuing to further develop our relationships with the three Victorian Porsche dealers, Melbourne, Brighton and Doncaster, and we are very pleased to see them engage with and support the Club in a variety of

from race control Welcome to the first From Race Control for 2020! The Competition year is underway, with one event complete and I am starting to write this on the evening before the Haunted Hills Hill Climb. I am reflecting on the fact that over the years the Club has evolved the Competition structure to accommodate changing preferences and so it continues. When we reviewed the rules from 2019, we proposed combining C and D classes into a single ‘Classic’ class (like we currently do with Modified and GT classes). Each of C and D classes would retain their own separate benchmark, but prizes would be awarded across the combined group. Feedback from competitors was that we should wait until 2021 before making the change, and that is what we decided to do. We are a club, not a business, and it is very important to us to consider and respond to our members. There is no agenda to drive out certain classes, and in fact C Class is strongly represented on the Competition Committee. However, we do

want to ensure that enough numbers remain in each class for a viable and worthy competition. We continue to see numbers moving towards A and GT classes, which represent newer, more powerful vehicles in the main. More than 50% of competitors were in these two classes in 2019. Once again, we started this year with a very well attended and fabulous day at Phillip Island. The Island is always popular with competitors and the January meeting seems to be even more so. Demand was so strong that we capped the number of competitors and entrée participants. The second event was the Hill Climb at Bryant Park, Haunted Hills in the Latrobe Valley. As in previous years, we used three different configurations of circuit (small loop, figure of eight and clockwise outside) and competitors had four runs on each. For the second year running we had a very small field. While that means more runs for those who took part, the size of the field was a little disappointing. On a positive note, six participants took part in Entrée Class.

Competition and Entrée classes. One way to get close to the action without risking your pride and joy is to join our group of track marshals. If you are new and would like to give marshalling a try, Sandown could be just the event for you. You can contact Gordon Johnstone at marshals@pcv.com.au Our April event is a major one for the Club, the Mobil 1 Sandown 360 Regularity Relay. This event attracts a significant number of nonPorsche Club teams. The format is a multi-club team event comprising four to six drivers and cars over six hours. Good luck to all Teams. Mark Horton Andrews Competition Director

The next event is back to Sprint format at Sandown in late March. Sandown International Raceway is popular and easy to get to, so good numbers are expected in both

the socialist Thank you to the people who have provided suggestions for the new name of this column. I thought the previous name “Social Corner” was a bit too pedestrian for a mag about the illustrious Porsche community. However I was uncomfortable with one suggestion, Linley’s Lies, even if it was on the money. In the end I liked the play on words that is The Socialist. After all we are trying to be collectivists when we gather together to enjoy all things Porsche. Now with that little bit of nonsense out of the way let me report the year to date, oh and the very last part of 2019. The year ended with coffee and cars to Hanging Rock. A simply lovely event enjoyed by the large number who attended. Thank you so much to our organiser Ken Gogos. Just before we had the Gala Annual Dinner which was an outstanding success. As promised Geoff Mould and his team arranged an absolute ripper event as reported elsewhere in this edition. Christmas was a very short break, the social team barely drawing breath before the new year was upon us. With a bang we were into Clyde

White’s Family Day at Billila Mansion. With much appreciated support from Porsche Brighton we had a great turnout and discovered a whole new profile of PCV members who drive Macans and Cayennes and who have children. About 50 kids enjoyed the day as you will see in the article elsewhere in this edition. We now need to see how PCV can provide more SUV and family friendly events. On this topic I was impressed by a lady member who attended our Summer Run in a Cayenne. Initially she was intimidated by 41 little sports cars but soon realised she was very welcome and became something of a hero as it became clear that the Cayenne was very well suited to some of the more challenging roads used for the run. Run organisers David Turner and Alvaro Dal Gallo had set out to avoid the traffic of major roads as much as possible. Some of the resulting narrow, bumpy bitumen roads caused many of the little sports cars to slow appreciably. The unexpected appearance of roadworks along the route, after the final check run, added some spice but all was smoothed out as we relaxed into a sumptuos catered lunch at the Geelong Yacht Club. Thanks to David and Alvaro for all their hard work. Being ever eager to learn, your Social C/ tee has discovered that Vicroads has a website where all road closures are displayed. ( I think Registers knew this already ! ) We will use it in future to double check road status prior to a run. This is the type of improvement we are trying to imbed in the processes being included in the

Social C/tee Manual which is currently coming together. We thank Alison Belot for her untiring efforts to bring this laborious task to completion. Russell Sturzaker’s club night at Porsche Centre Brighton was another record breaker and you will see the highlights of this wonderful event elsewhere in this edition. A particularly pleasing development is that our hosts for the club nights are also our sponsors, providing very real support to help finance bigger and better events. Keep an eye on the website and your email updates because Russell and his team have some amazing attractions for future club nights. Our autumn and winter club runs are coming together so watch out for future announcements. So in closing this newly named column I feel inclined to quote Karl Marx. “Please accept my resignation. I don’t want to belong to a club that would accept me as a member” Actually that is a Linley Lie. It was Groucho not Karl. Linley Baxter Social Director

Story & Photos: Porsche Cars Australia

Top-of-the-range: the Porsche 911 Turbo S Top-of-the-range 911 with enhanced dynamics Definitely 911, definitely Turbo, definitely new: the Porsche 911 Turbo S Stuttgart/Australia. Porsche has celebrated the world premiere of the new-generation 911 Turbo S. The new range-topping 911 delivers 478 kW (650 hp) for unprecedented power, driving dynamics and comfort. A new 3.8-litre boxer engine with two VTG turbochargers is the beating heart of the car and delivers 51 kW (70 hp) more than its predecessor. The maximum torque now reaches 800 newton metres (an increase of 50 Nm). The Turbo-specific eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) cuts the sprint from zero to 100 km/h to 2.7 seconds (a decrease of 0.2 seconds), while the top speed is unchanged at 330 km/h. Available in Coupé and Cabriolet form, the 911 Turbo S will go on sale in Porsche Centres around Australia in the second half of 2020. The dimensions of the 911 Turbo S have been increased significantly in line with the enhanced driving dynamics: the body is now 45 millimetres wider above the front axle (1,840 mm), and the overall width is 1,900 mm above the rear axle (an increase of 20 mm). Modified track widths, further developed aerodynamics and the new mixed-size tyres contribute to its agility and sportiness: the track is now 42 mm wider at the front axle and 10 mm wider at the rear axle. The adaptive aerodynamics now include controlled cooling air flaps at the front, while the larger rear wing has been designed for even more downforce.

Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports chassis that has been lowered by 10 mm and the sports exhaust system with adjustable flaps that guarantees a distinctive sound. The completely new engine of the 911 Turbo S is based on the 911 Carrera engine generation. It features a completely redesigned charge air cooling system; new, larger VTG turbochargers in a symmetrical layout with electrically adjustable wastegate flaps, as well as the use of piezo injectors, which have significantly improved the ve-hicle’s characteristics with regard to responsiveness, power, torque, emissions and revving ability. The new six-cylinder engine is aspirated by a new intake system. In this instance, the previous routing of process air and charge air cooling was swapped around: part of the process air now flows through the characteristic Turbo air intakes in the rear side sections. In front of the air filters, now situated in the rear wings, two other airflows have also been incorporated, through the rear lid grille. This means the new 911 Turbo S has four intakes with a larger overall cross-section and lower resistance, helping to improve engine efficiency. Two symmetrical turbochargers with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and larger dimensions replace the previous identical parts, with the compressor and turbine wheels now rotating in opposite directions. The diameter of the turbine wheels has been increased by five millimetres to 55 mm, while the 61 mm compressor wheel is now three millimetres larger. The wastegate flaps are electrically controlled with stepper motors.

For the first time, the 911 Turbo S transfers its power to the road with mixed tyres in two different sizes: it has 20-inch tyres with their unique 255/35 dimensions at the front and 21inch 315/30 tyres at the rear.

The harmonious design, which perfectly balances driving pleasure, dynamics and sportiness, is ideally suited for everyday use as well as the race track. The leap in performance of this new generation is particularly noticeable in the sprint from zero to 200 km/h: at 8.9 seconds, the new 911 Turbo S is one full second quicker than its predecessor.

New optional equipment has been introduced to underline the much sportier image of the all-wheel drive 911 Turbo S. These include the Porsche

Thanks to the enhanced Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive, the transfer case can distribute significantly more torque,

12

PORSCHE PARADE

with up to 500 Nm being transferred to the front wheels. The new generation of the standard PASM chassis is also even sportier. Faster and more precisely controlled dampers provide significant advantages to the driving dynamics with respect to roll stability, road holding, steering behaviour and cornering speeds. The new front end with wider air intakes has a characteristic Turbo-look with dual front light modules as well as standard LED matrix headlights with dark inserts. The redesigned, pneumatically extendable front spoiler and the larger rear wing deliver 15 per cent more downforce. The muscular rear wing sections with integrated air intakes emphasise the sleek body of the 911 Turbo S. The new look of the rear is completed by rectangular tailpipes in high-gloss Black, typical of the Turbo. The interior has a high-quality and sporty finish. The standard equipment list includes a full leather interior and carbon trim in combination with Light Silver accents. The 18-way adjustable sports seats feature stitching that pays homage to the first 911 Turbo (type 930). High-quality graphic elements and logos in the instrument cluster complete the characteristic Turbo S features. The centre screen of the PCM is now 10.9 inches, and can be operated quickly and without distraction thanks to its new layout. Other standard features on board ex-works are the GT sports steering wheel, the Sport Chrono package with newly integrated Porsche Track Precision app and BOSE® Surround Sound system. Additional Australian-specific standard equipment also includes seat heating for driver and front passenger, Lane Change Assist (blind-spot monitoring), Comfort Access and digital radio. The 911 Turbo S Coupé will be available in Australia at a price of $473,900 ^. The 911 Turbo S Cabriolet will be priced at $494,900 ^.

I arrived early for the first Coffee and Porsches for 2020 at 6.40am to get a good park and my camera gear set up only to find at least 60 early birds already there! This a very popular event on the club calendar and why not. It’s a good excuse to catch up with freinds with a coffee and pour over the amazing models that attend. The event was held in Point Ormond carpark and Cafe with an estimated 200 cars attending. Porsche Centre Brighton generously donated 180 coffees and brought along the newly released 911 Carrera S and Cayman 718 S. As usual there was a great selection of Porsches from 356s to GT3s and everything in between. The two hours went very quickly with the event finishing at 9am leaving everyone’s Sunday free for other activities. For those of you who could not attend there is a video of the event on the club’s facebook page. The next event is scheduled for the 6th June. Stay tuned for the new venue.

Billilla Mansion in Brighton was built in 1878 How did the “well to do” 19th century residents of Brighton spend their lazy Sunday afternoons? Having a family picnic at their mansion gardens of course! Well on Sunday 9th February 2020, it was now our turn to rest and relax in the surrounds of Billilla Mansion in Brighton and its glorious gardens, and we didn’t have to spend thousands of pounds for the privilege! The concept behind the day was the brainchild of PCV Social & General Committee Member – Clyde White, and the event the first of its type in the club for quite a number of years …. So was it a success? It surely was with 125 members and 52 kids with their families joining us, on an almost perfect day of sunshine, blue skies and comfortable temperature of 26 deg. On arrival at Billilla, families spread out across the magnificent lawns and gardens that are a feature of the mansion, with a variety of chairs, blankets and tables being set up and adorned with tablecloths which were then covered in an assorted array of food, wine and snacks. Porsche Centre Brighton were our event sponsors on the day, and their Marketing Manager – Pike Peters, and his team provided us with an assortment of the latest New Cars available from Porsche, looking truly magnificent in front of the mansion.

In the centre of the gardens we were serenaded by a saxophonist playing soothing Sunday session tunes, while during his breaks we were supported by a local DJ who provided a mixed soundtrack in the background. Members and guests mingled on the lawns, and enjoyed the casual atmosphere, while enjoying a cold beer, a glass of wine or even a superb coffee from the barista caravan which was provided by Porsche Centre Brighton Children were incredibly well catered for with a special guest the “Stardust Fairy” who very quickly had a line of willing cherubs queuing up to have their faces painted and colouring in. While Vickie Morris – Social Committee, showed her talent with an airbrush, spraying on removable tattoos, and not to be outdone, some of her customers on the day were well past their prep years! But what about the Treasure Hunt? Coordinated by our Club Administrators Carly and Lisa, this was a huge hit with the kids on the day, and had them running across the lawns and around the gardens searching for an assortment of sweet treats and small toys ….. And what about my Coffee and Gelato fix you might ask? Well once again the team from Porsche Centre Brighton had us covered providing us with barista coffees from an onsite caravan, along with a variety of ice cream and

gelato treats from the gelato cart. Members took full advantage with over 185 coffees, hot chocolates and iced coffees being served and the Gelato cart being visited for more than one serve!!! Later in the day at around 3.00pm the draw for the Bush Fire Appeal took place. Tickets had been available to members to pre-purchase online prior to the day via the club’s booking system, and were also sold on the day, with first prize being a “Drive the Range Day” proudly donated by Porsche Centre Brighton. Family day coordinator Clyde White brought the bucket containing the ticket stubs up to the microphone, and asked Pike Peters – Marketing Manager at PCB to join him and draw the prize, and it was with great pleasure that he announced the winner of the raffle as being PCV Life Member and Past President Andrew Bonwick who took home the gold. The total funds raised for the Bush Fire Appeal was $5,000. Members started heading home around 4.00pm and all agreed that it had been a fabulous day, and one that they would all like to see repeated again next year. Our thanks go to Clyde White for organising and coordinating this event and Vickie, Carly and Lisa for their assistance also. Further a special thanks to Pike Peters and the team from Porsche Centre Brighton, our event sponsors.

The Billilla Mansion Story Incorporating a formal garden and historic house, Billilla Mansion is undoubtedly one of Brighton’s most iconic buildings. It is a historically significant site which is listed on the National Trust Register, and has been a local landmark for more than one hundred years. Billilla is also significant to Brighton because of its distinctive Edwardian rather than Victorian appearance.

Nicholas Were originally owned the block of land bound by Hampton, Halifax and Dendy streets in Brighton in 1872. The land was subdivided and records show that a successful miner Robert Wright built, owned and occupied the thirteen-room residence from 1878. The property passed through a number of hands over the next ten years, but in 1888 it was purchased by pastoralist William Weatherly who named the property Billilla. Mr Weatherly remodelled the house and made alterations and extensions to the building

in the typical Art Noveau style. Mr Weatherly died in 1914 and was survived by his wife, Jeanne, who lived in the house until her death in 1933. Violet, their daughter, maintained the property with the help of staff until she passed away in 1972. Brighton City Council (now known as Bayside City Council) acquired the property on April 4, 1973 on behalf of the local citizens and reserved it for “public purposes”. Although the property is now leased by Xavier College, it is open to the general public who have access to the gardens year round.

A young farmer in old clothes, who had spent the day painting, was ignored when he went into a dealer in Geelong to admire and enquire about a new 1973 Porsche. The receptionist eventually called the reluctant salesman over, who gave the price to the farmer and quickly gave him the bum’s rush. The farmer promptly went to Hamilton’s in South Yarra and bought his first brand new Porsche, a brown 1974 2.7 Targa, and has been buying Porsches ever since, to the great delight of what is now PCM.

Neil Drew 26

PORSCHE PARADE

There has been many Porsches, and a very active membership of PCV since 2015, as part of the sizeable and busy Geelong

“push”. The current car crop is well chosen, but “too many to drive” for the old farmer Neil Drew, who long ago sold the chooks, moved into Geelong and has spent a lot of time enjoying his cars and Porsche based trips all around the world, with wife Phyl. The oldest car in Neil’s collection is a 32 year old Silver-grey 928 S4, with Navy interior and fine-striped grey fabric seat inserts, showing only 54k, owned since new and amazingly unmarked. There are very few 928s on the road, but there are many Keepers in our WIYG? collections, still looking handsome and ageless. They were produced from ‘78-’85, supposedly

to replace the obsolete 911, but the customers voted with their right foot and are still voting. Another model here with an interesting history is the 2003 986 Boxster S, the first version of what has become a very successful open sports car, with a history and design derived from the mid-fifties 550, Porsche’s first sports racer, a very successful 4 cylinder giant killer. Neil and son Sandy share the car, which is Grey, with a Black interior, has done 75K, and is equally pampered. Now for the latest version of that obsolete 911, there is an understated Carrera 991

4S, Grey with a grey interior, looking new, but 6 years old and showing 45K. Porsche models often run longer than you think! But wait! There’s more! Another model had a critical role in Porsche’s survival. It was the Cayenne. Having waited through the SUV boom for many years, Porsche produced the world’s best and fastest “mid-size luxury crossover sport utility vehicle” in 2012, which quickly became its top seller, probably saving the company, which went through complicated financial and ownership troubles for some years. Having been Cayenne owners for many years, Neil and Phyl would often prefer

to take it on trips, particularly for comfort. Now they have a new one, a Cayenne Turbo, the third iteration, White with Bordeaux red interior and fully optioned, with all the bells and whistles, including a heads up display. It has just been for a long shake down trip in the high country, performing brilliantly. Many PCV members and WIYG? owners use their Cayenne as the daily driver, ‘cos it’s ready for everything. Besides, it’s got as much as 410kW (550hp). It’s Porsche’s only V8 since the 928 and it’s the only 4 door, apart from the four door 928 built for Ferry in the factory for his birthday, in his favourite green. ISSUE 1, 2020

These vehicles and lots of other tools and goodies are kept in a fabulous paddock shed, 30m by 15m, big enough for lots more of whatever you fancy and all incredibly clean and tidy. At home several ks away, there is a steep drive, a two car garage at the top and a turn table in front of it. Nine years ago we did an article about Tom Walstab’s cars. His first Porsche had been a 928 GTS,

from the end of the line in ‘95. The “failed replacement” for the 911 became an icon itself! And Tom had a turn table in his garage!

The Porsche Club of Victoria’s 2020 Motorsport Season started less than three weeks into the New Year. The track is situated in the picturesque farmland on the shores of the southern side of the Island, where it is directly at the mercy of the weather off the Bass Strait. For the weeks leading up to the event the tragedy of the extensive Australian bush fires was on everyone’s mind. With one week to go discussion of the weather forecast also caused apprehension. Severe weather warnings, with thunderstorms and strong winds. Not ideal conditions to go out on one of the fastest and most technical tracks most of us are fortunate ever to drive on.

The conditions proved tough with only one driver triumphing to break the previous class records. Well done to Stefan Wojciechowski in GT1 getting his GT3 RS around the track in 99.135 seconds. That is faster than the records for the club’s modified classes M0, M1, M2. Congratulations to all our class winners and those who were out there for the first time who left with a bigger smile. Finally, thanks to those who give up their time to make this such a great event!!!

While the pits where adorned with the usual mix of interesting motor vehicles, one thing seemed to stand out. Fitzgerald Racing Services/ Evolve Technik had cordoned off an area of some 30 square meters and set out what looked to be a professionally catered buffet of all sorts of tasty treats. It would be safe to say that some of the competitors possibly spent more time in studying the goodies than their track craft. You know who you are…. ? Once again, the club’s marshals and volunteers were out in the bizarre conditions to make the day possible. It is incredible that this fantastic group of people keep on smiling and make the day into something special regardless what is thrown at them. We are a lucky club!

Most of the 106 entries braved the forecasted weather. They arrived at the track in eerie conditions. It was very smoky and overcast. From early in they day, when you could see, off in the distance storm clouds loomed. The weather held off, only gusts of strong wind adding to the challenge of this raceway. The rain held off until pouring as we all headed home.

Ange from Luxury Auto Body has continued to support the club by providing a flat top tow truck to assist in recoveries. They are a Porsche Certified Collision Centre based in Cliffton Hill.

Club Night

Porsche Centre Brighton

ISSUE 1, 2020

39

A New Decade - A Renewed Facility - A New Spirit of Cooperation.

Tuesday 18th February saw some 250 Members and Guests visit Porsche Centre Brighton for our first Club Night for 2020, in this the Club’s 45th Anniversary Year. At 7.00pm our night commenced with club night MC – Russell Sturzaker welcoming Members and Guests, while also acknowledging the four Life Members present, namely Andrew Bonwick, Barbara & Will Darvall, and Ian Knight, while also recognising five Past Presidents who were also present in Andrew Bonwick, Will Darvall, Peter Harrison, Ian Knight and Michael O’Brien. Next we welcomed eight new members to the club, and heard from each as they introduced themselves, and outlined the particular car/s that they drive. This night, had been a while in the making, as it was originally scheduled for 2019, but with the ongoing development of the New Brighton Facility, it was not until December 2019 that the new showroom was completed, hence our meeting tonight being the first club night in the new premises.

Brighton who was to be our host for the night. Pike thanked Russell for his introduction, and gave us an overview on the new ethos at Porsche Centre Brighton as being ‘Future Focused’, with the new facility reflecting this focus, along with their ability to display the full range, including being fully ready for BEV (battery electric vehicle) service and infrastructure. A large solar installation on the roof of the facility will also take Porsche Centre Brighton ‘off the grid’ during daylight hours. Pike then introduced their first presenter for the evening in Robert Gattereder – CEO of Preston Motors Group (owners of Porsche Centre Brighton and Doncaster) who provided a brief insight into PMG’s plans for both dealerships, along with his vision for automotive retail in Australia. Next up Pike introduced Chris Green – General Manager of Porsche Centre Brighton, who went on to introduce some of the PCB Team, namely: Patrick Tomljanovic – New Porsche Sales Manager Sales Executives

Beer, red and white wines, soft drinks and mineral water were also available from the bar area from 6.30pm, while an added bonus was a selection of craft beers being provided by Bad Shepherd Brewery.

Our next Club Night is on Tuesday 28th April 2020 at Porsche Centre Melbourne – and we have a very special Guest Speaker joining us!

 Nic Sparrow Porsche Approved Used Manager - Goran Lukic After Sales Manager - Michael Smith

Following Chris Green’s introduction, Pike took to the microphone again, and asked members to follow them into the service centre, where After Sales Manager – Michael Smith and the Express Service Team demonstrated the new 90-Minute Express Service process that they have developed. This included showing a vehicle going through an Express Service on a hoist in workshop one, followed by a demonstration of their Hunter Alignment machine in workshop two. During this time the cocktail finger food continued to be served, while members partook of the craft beers on tap, along with our new red and white wine selections. Next up was Parts Manager – Mark Eldridge and his Spare Parts Team who explained why they supply one third of the motorsport parts for Carerra Cup, while also giving us a sneak preview of their new Manthey Classic offering.

Club President – Tony Carolan welcomed members and guests and provided a brief overview of some of our coming events. Social Director – Linley Baxter followed giving an update on our upcoming Summer Run to the Geelong Yacht Club on Sunday 1st March. MC Russell Sturzaker then introduced Pike Peters – Marketing Manager at Porsche Centre

Social Director – Linley Baxter then thanked Preston Motors Group CEO – Robert

Next Club Night – Tue 28th April

 Mark Rogers

Following the completion of Mark’s presentation Pike took to the microphone one last time to thank everyone present for sharing their night with the Team from Porsche Centre Brighton, and thanked the club for the opportunity to not only host our night, but to also be given the opportunity to be our main presentation for the night.

40

At the completion of the night, Alf Carrigan and Alison Belot held a brief meeting with those who were registered for the Tassie Tour, at which attendees were presented with their tour information packs.

 Damon Gauntlett

Marketing Manager - Pike Peters

Speaking of catering, our night also provided members with their first taste of a new caterer for this cocktail style finger food, with new caterer’s – Luckman Catering providing our fare for the night.

Linley also thanked our sponsors Porsche Cars Australia, Porsche Centre Brighton, Porsche Centre Melbourne, Traction Tyres & Auto, and Nillumbik Cellars, along with a special thank you to Club Night Sub-committee members, Russell Sturzaker, Melanie Treloar, Garry Saber & Anna Cook, and to the other Social Committee Members who assisted on the night.

 Richard Catchlove

Parts Manager - Mark Eldridge

So while this was our first opportunity to experience Porsche Centre Brighton’s new facilities, the object of our opening Club Night was to provide the opportunity for members to socialise, refresh friendships, make new ones, and whet our appetites, not only for the food and refreshments on offer, but also for the exciting Club year ahead.

Gattereder for his informative insight into PMG’s ownership and direction for the dealerships. Followed by a thank you to PCB General Manager – Chris Green and his team for their presentations and to Pike Peters – Marketing Manager for his support of the club, in hosting and organising our night.

Jeromy Moore – has been Technical Director & Project Manager for Porsche’s World Endurance Championship Program with the 919 Hybrid, race engineering its #2 entry to victory in the Championship and at Le Mans in 2016, along with development of the all-new 911 RSR Program at Porsche Ag for the past 5 years, and has only recently returned to Australia to take up the position of Technical Director at Triple Eight Race Engineering and the Red Bull Holden Race Team. Moore worked as an engineer at Triple Eight from the time it joined Supercars in 2003, progressing to chief designer and acting as Craig Lowndes’ race engineer from 2008 until leaving for Porsche at the start of 2015. This is definitely one Club Night you won’t want to miss ….. and as places are limited, when bookings open you’ll have to move fast to guarantee yourself a seat. Please Note: Due to the expected number of members wishing to attend this meeting, this will be a Members Only Club Night (no guests permitted).

Summer Run to Royal Geelong Yacht Club – An Organiser’s Perspective Sunday 1st March

42

PORSCHE PARADE

ISSUE 1, 2020

43

Towards the end of 2019 I was thinking about what sort of Porsche Run I could do in 2020. As it so happened I was talking to the manager of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club about the possibility of doing a function there in the New Year. His response “no way, we have too many international sailing events planned”. A later discussion was that Sunday 1st March could be available as it was between events. So that’s how it began. Having lived in Geelong for most of my life has some advantages. For one, I have always been interested in wine and food so its was a simple choice to ring the RK Group, Richard Kelly, who does great food, and ask could he do a lunch at the yacht club on this date. No problem. It is always a pleasure to deal with professional people:- this is what I want, canapés to start, alternate entrée and mains, chocolates, coffee and tea to finish at this price!! Done. Being a member of the yacht club we get the venue at no cost, so with the addition of the cost of a morning tea at a CFA, it could be achieved. I contacted the Ballan CFA who could not have been more helpful. Kaine Myers, Ballan Captain, was enthusiastic and said he would block the street in front of the CFA so we could park our cars. A great idea. Next, I needed some run notes, and after discussion with Alvaro Del Gallo we came up with the run, that proved to be a bit of a disaster. The intention was a run that used as many sealed country roads as possible.

44

PORSCHE PARADE

We wanted to avoid main roads and figured we had something exciting. It was! Some parts were quite narrow and a little bumpy but at this stage it was all bitumen. Jennie and I did the run two weeks before the event and all was good to go. We didn’t know that in those two weeks Vic Roads would rip up one section of highway and block access to another. Thanks to Ken Anson, Alf Carrigan and others who ultimately became unofficial tour leaders to lead the way to the yacht club. The run started from the Caltex Service Centre Werribee, and I was pleased that all of the 82 participants arrived on time. After introductions we headed off to Ballan, on a warm day with clear skies. Just as well, as we had road works on the way. Luckily it wasn’t raining, so we just had dust, not mud. Ballan CFA was excellent. Well catered for with obliging volunteers. They offered to demonstrate the ‘jaws of life’, and I volunteered Michael Dennis’ newly acquired Aston Martin. At the yacht club we were very fortunate that a) there was a grass area next to the club where we could park our cars, and b) not all of the 149 Lasers had arrived that were to be stored on the grass for the next international event. Many thanks to Michael Bailey and Clyde White who volunteered to help organise the parking. We all managed to fit in. The canapés were meant to be eaten on the lawn outside, but as the weather was now just over 30ºC everyone headed

inside. Canapés consisted of ‘Spiced beetroot and goats cheese tart, walnuts and fresh thyme’ and ‘Classic pankocrusted calamari with lemon mayo’. This was followed by an entrée of ‘Crisp pork belly, cauliflower purée, crisp prosciutto, apple slaw and roasted garlic’ or ‘Ricotta gnocchi, pan fried kent pumpkin, brown butter, thyme and pecorino’. These were lovely dishes well presented with lots of flavours. While mains were: ‘French cut chicken breast, gingered sweet potato mash, green beans, lime and coconut sauce’ or ‘Aged eye fillet of beef, potato gratin, creamed spinach, red onion and confit of thyme jus’. For those that wanted it, there was tea, coffee and chocolates available to finish. Giving the circumstances I have declared the day a success as on the plus side we had a great morning tea at Ballan CFA, safe parking at the yacht club with excellent well presented food for lunch. When you consider that none of the food was prepared at the yacht club, as it was all prepared elsewhere and brought in, this gives you some idea of the logistic problems to provide food of this quality. It was just a pity that the run did not live up to expectations. I have been doing these runs for many years and this was the first time that things went array. However, my thanks to everyone who came on the Summer Run, and maybe I might consider doing another run at a later time when I’ve got over this one!!

2020 Annual Gala Dinner & Awards Night

The French Twist Grand Ballroom, The Sofitel Melbourne on Collins. Saturday 7th December 2019.

MC’s Vickie Morris & Geoffrey Mould

Social Director Linley Baxter

Motorsport Presenter Cameron Goodyear

Geoff Mould and his merry team of Annual Dinnerites set the bar even higher this year enticing us to attend with their French Twist theme. Indeed whoever heard of a Porsche Club adopting a French Theme? C’est mal oui!

the presentation providing all at-tendees with an insight into the significance of the awards.

Luxury Cars, who in addition to providing Magnums of GH Mumm Champagne to our major motorsport award winners, also made available bottles of the same Champagne as table prizes. And that is how so many PCV members came to possess bottles of the prized French F1 podium celebration Champagne.

This French twist theme encouraged many of the 171 members who at-tended to reveal their inner French proclivities. A bevy of French costumes and colour greeted the throng upon arrival. Geoff Mould our indefatigable MC, replete in pantaloons, projected the power of Napoleon. However the Paris performer, Pierrot Clown (aka Vickie Morris) was his match keeping Napoleon in check and amusing us all with their repartee. Perhaps the real life Napoleon could have commanded the love of Columbine for Pierrot but on this night it was the clown who had the upper hand. Despite the pervasive French theme the German influence was not to be denied. Very generous sponsorship from Lorbek Luxury Cars included the display of a brand new bright green Porsche GT2 RS. (How did they get the car to our upper level ball room?) Such a centrepiece vied for attention with the French outfits of the attendees and many attendees combined the two in stunning photographs recording the night. As always on this night of nights the worthy and illustrious were presented with their awards for competition, social and volunteering all recorded in the photos and in the accompanying report and roundly acknowledged by the applause and accolades from their fellow club members. A wonderful audio/visual program backgrounded

Ballroom display car by Lorbek Luxury Cars

PORSCHE PARADE

The less worthy but often no less illustrious hoped that lady luck may also bestow upon them one of the many generous prizes provided by our sponsors. The hope turned to reality for lucky ones. Michele Selwyn and Michael McLaurie were rewarded with High Tea pro-vided by the Sofitel in their Sofi’s Lounge for Best Dressed. There is quite a story behind their wonderful costume ensemble. Apparently Michele’s outfit was originally purchased many years ago and never worn. With the French twist theme, she was inspired to revisit the sparkly gown after see-ing a photo of Bianca Jagger in a similar gown and beret at the iconic Club 54 in New York in the late 1970’s. Michael’s matching sparkling jacket was purchased on the morning of our Porsche dinner after discovering that his original outfit was still in transit in a Post Office in Melbourne. Other fantas-tic awards went to: Richard & Melinda Fear. Dinner for 2 at The Stokehouse. Joseph & Maria Ensabella. Swiss Vax Products. James Kelly & Marthese Wallace, Andrew Bonwick & Stephanie Wylaars, and Chris Tsigros all received wonderful Meguiars products in a PCV Backpack. Thank you to our generous sponsors. And big thank you to our major sponsor, Lorbek

But with the awards made the night was not done as the Baker Boys band struck up a treat and we danced into the wee small hours……well at least until we all nearly turned into pumpkins. All attendees were in awe that PCV, being a volunteer organisation, could turn on such a sophisticated event. Special thanks to the Annual Dinner Sub Committee composed of: Geoff Mould: Chairman, MC and food taster. Vickie Morris: Co MC, tables and food taster. Clyde Whyte: Sponsorship. Melanie Treloar, Michael O’Brien: Venue and entertainment bookings. Carly Pasco, Lisa Gillespie: Audio visual, administration, logistics. Preparations are well underway for the 2020 Annual Dinner on Saturday 21st November. Being the 45th Anniversary of PCV and being held at the amazing Myer Mural Hall it is sure to be a wonderful night. Save the date for this one.

The spectator facilities at the venue are excellent, providing panoramic views across the various configurations from several vantage points. It must have been quite a sight to see 15 cars crawling around the track at less than normal road speed during the “sighter laps”. This didn’t last long once the timed sessions started with plenty of spirited and skilful driving, especially at the final corner which presented a traction challenge for many of the cars and drivers! 85.55 43.28 43.31 44.31 44.98 46.34

At the time of writing the final times and group classifications for the day are being tabulated, verified and published. Drivers can check results on the PCV Website once they are published. The standout drivers for the day were Stefan Wojciechowski in his intimidating black 991.2 GT3 RS who set the fastest times for both the Clockwise SHORT and Clockwise FIGURE 8. Stefan has certainly upped the ante in the GT Class for 2020. Peter Fitzgerald was the fastest car on the Clockwise configuration after resolving some minor issues in his slightly modified 718 Boxster S. Congratulations to the first time Entrée class drivers who spent the day learning about their cars in a controlled environment with the support of fellow Club members. It is great to see these new members out on track enjoying their fabulous vehicles. Based on the smiles and banter in the pit area all involved had an enjoyable day, another successful track day for the Club.

With such short lap times 1 second often covered 6-8 cars. Given the various models, driver experience and track configurations this highlights the competitive nature of this type of event. In reality the test for drivers is to improve on their own times over each run with many drivers shaving seconds from their first to last run.

This event is different to the normal sprint events with only one car on track at a time and times recorded from point A to point B. This results in an action-packed day as drivers complete a timed run in under 60 seconds. Drivers are allowed up to 4 runs on each track configuration with the best time from each counting towards the overall classification for the day.

Coffee Run

to Hanging Rock Cafe Story: Harriet Anson Photos: Ken Anson Saturday 14th December 2019

After a very busy calendar of Club events ending with the Gala Dinner dance it was time to meet for the last get together of the year, Kon’s Casual Coffee Run. These runs are very pleasant relaxed outings that allow both the navigator and the driver to enjoy the scenery. Our starting point for this early morning drive was Sweet Lulus Cafe on Old Calder Hwy Keilor.

a grey 997. Con has been a member for six months but this was his first run. Also joining us were prospective members Ellie and Alex Clarkin driving a white Macan. Before we were due to leave Social Director Linley Baxter apologised to Kon explaining that he and Helen were unable to join us but he had come for the meet and greet and to wish us a safe and enjoyable run.

It was evident we had arrived at our meeting place by the number of shining Porsches parked in the street outside the busy cafe and once inside it was great to meet new people and catch up with old friends. As departure time approached we were asked to gather outside so Kon could give a quick briefing and introduce the new members Renato and Suzie Malavisi driving a white 987 Cayman, Ian Soklevski driving a black 718 Boxster GTS and Con Rados driving

Even though it was a cool and cloudy day the owners of Boxsters, Caymans, 911s and a Macan were prepared to make the best of the weather and enjoy the drive. There is a saying in Melbourne if you don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes and it will change. We drove for about 13 kilometres on roads that were familiar to some but not others as a wrong turn was taken by a few drivers causing quick u turns to be made to rectify the error. Kon always manages to find some great Porsche roads for us to drive and enjoy, even the police car (there always seems to be one) coming towards us on Gisborne Road did little to deter the pleasure. At the entrance to Hanging Rock we entered through the gates and continued up the track to the Hanging Rock Cafe right inside the reserve. This café, the only eatery within the reserve, is nestled among the trees at the base of the world famous Hanging Rock. The menu caters to light meals, main meals and cakes and sweets, some elected to have the big fluffy scones with jam and cream while others who were staying longer

had a light or main meal. Whatever the choice the meals were delicious. This cafe is situated metres from the beginning of Summit Walk and also has a dog friendly Al Fresco dining area with amazing views. Up close The Rock is very imposing, mysterious and eerie. After lively conversations and good food it was time to wish everyone Seasons Greetings and return home. Thanks again Kon for a very enjoyable drive and day.

Technical Event - Carreras in Flight Story: David Skelton Photos: Esther Buttery & Ken Anson Saturday 22nd February, 2020

On the 22nd of February the Mid 911 Register organised a visit to see a part of Porsches 1980’s history at Essendon Airport. Ken Anson and Will Darvall had organised a technical event. On the invitation of Eye Surgeon Doctor Robert Buttery, a club member and the custodian of two beautiful aircraft powered by Porsche Carrera engines called Mooney PFM 3200’s.

4 seater light aircraft. The first production flew in 1985, test flown from Texas to Stuttgart. A further flight around the world followed in 1985 with the plane landing at Moorabbin during that journey.

I was one of 25 visiting club members hosted by Robert to learn of the aircrafts development and the passion of an articulate man for a part of Porsche’s history. The hanger was like a museum with Carrera engines on display stands complete and running, engines with cut away sections showing all aspects of design and development, books, and technical manuals describing the most intimate details. Last but not lease outside on the strip two beautiful aircraft gleaming in the sun.

“The Mooney PFM (Porsche Flug Motor). Airframe by Mooney. Power by Porsche. Excellence by tradition.

It was a techo-fest worth seeing and for that matter worth visiting again. PORSCHE Wiessach’s development of the aero version of the Carrera engine started in the early 1980’s producing a beautifully smooth power plant. The motor would roar to 5300 RPM for a geared prop speed of 2343 RPM on lift off, reducing to 2100 RPM for effortless cruising. Mooney Aircraft Corporation of Kerrville Texas was the recipient merging this engine into a lovely 62

PORSCHE PARADE

Here’s an extract from the brochure promoting the aircraft.

Out of a shared commitment to quality, performance, and innovation has emerged the Mooney PFM-the world’s first production aircraft powered by Porsche’s revolutionary PFM 3200 aircraft engine. It was obsession for performance that spawned Mooney’s revered line of fast and efficient personal aircraft. It was a similar obsession that created the ultimate German road car and the world wide Porsche mystique. But it was only logical that Mooney and Porsche should come together in the Mooney PFM. And now a common heritage of technological innovation has given rise to a thrilling new alternative for the general aviator. In creating the PFM, acclaimed technology sustained a quest for a more perfect union between airframe and engine. And the result is harmony redefined. The

aerodynamic superiority of the Mooney airframe is complemented by a truly advanced engine that capitalizes on 75 years of Porsche aviation experience. Lightweight, air cooled, and horizontally opposed, the six-cylinder, 217 HP - PFM 3200 is patterned after the legendary Porsche 911 sports car engine. The union of engine and airframe produces a precision flying machine that is exceedingly responsive and uncommonly smooth and quiet - like a fine road car. Turbine-like, a single-lever power control replaces convention multiple settings for throttle, prop, and fuel mixture. A dual electronic ignition system is only part of an all-electric orientation that, coupled with multiple redundancies, provides high levels of safety and reliability. The Mooney PFM also brings advanced digital instrumentation, Porsche styling, and twelve extra inches of space to the cabin. The result is a personal aircraft so advanced that it marks the transition from dim aspiration to realized ideal in the single-engine piston aircraft. Mere acceptability has now been transcended.” Production stopped in the late 1980’s, over 41 Mooney Porsche 3200 aircraft were built, recession hit both continents stopping further development and Porsche disbanded the aero engine division. To reduce the aviation commitment for backup and spare parts

Porsche bought back many of the power plants and scrapped them. Today there are Robert’s two 3200’s and a further 10 aircraft flying in Germany.

When I first swapped my coupe for a 1985 Porsche Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet some years ago it was a breath of fresh air, no longer did a closed coupe with ineffective air conditioning inhibit my weekend excursions on a hot summer day. Wind in your hair and that glorious Carrera 3.2 litre

engine sound was addictive. I think Robert has the same feeling, free as a bird with no traffic jams. Thank you Dr. Buttery for a great day.

Boxster Cayman Register

Run to Dalyston Story: Anna Cook Photos: Ken Anson Saturday 15th February

Before departing McDonald’s Mulgrave, Run Organiser Carlo Fasolino updated the road alerts as the previous day Cardinia Road (nr Pakenham) was partly closed for road works.

Twenty four cars from all registers turned out for the Run including one Audi: that of Carlo Fasolino whose Porsche Cayman had a little breakdown the day before! That the weather was overcast didn’t dampen the spirits. Among those revved up and eager to go were Rada and Rod Popovic, Maureen and Rodney Mackenzie, and Omnia Holland (with friend Litsa). Omnia, on her second club run because her first love (sailing), takes up most of her time. Elena Schwob’s 2020 Carrera Coupe 992 Carmine Red was a stand out for its swank Carmine (lipstick red) duco; and Richard PaulAndrew’s black 911 GTS with its Sunshine Coast number was a reminder that we may not in fact have any sun on the coast where we were headed! 64

PORSCHE PARADE

The first stage from Mulgrave via Emerald to Gembrook, was windy with intermittent rain, and light mists. Clearly this was to be a wipers on/ wipers off day. However, the misty landscape looked serene and John Gedye’s red Boxster GTS stood out providing a beacon to follow. The convoy continued to Cockatoo at a good (and safe) pace then slowed dramatically to a crawl behind a large, loaded semi-trailer. At this stage the wipers were moving faster than the cars! Soon we arrived in Pakenham and enjoyed cruising on a wider road that crossed a flat plain of dark, rich soil with vast hectares of asparagus and corn. Along the Cardinia and Dalmore roads huge cold stores were visible.

Located in the Old Daylston Church we enjoyed delicious food that included a main course of chicken and fish followed by a delicious dessert of petits fours. The service was warm and efficient with the owners and hosts Sharon and Brett in attendance. Winners of the raffle were: Brian Langton, Jim Morey, Nick Yates and Anh Paul-Andrew. With thanks to Immerse in the Yarra Valley for providing the wines. At three o’clock, long, long after lunch had finished everyone was still happily chatting and reluctant to leave. So, a big thanks to you Carlo for organizing such a fun social day!

Finally, we turned onto the Gippsland Highway and within a short distance we arrived at Caldermeade Farm and Café for a coffee and morning tea. The second part of the run took us through Poowong, along quiet country roads to Loch. We drove over hills and along winding roads that required navigation as there was heavy fog. There was a welcome break in the weather just before arriving at our lunch venue at Dalyston.

Run to Coldstream Story: Greg Humphries Photos: Julie Mason Sunday 1st December 2019

Following on from last year’s inaugural evening run to Mt Dandenong, the Register’s ‘brains trust’ decided to entrench the tradition of an afternoon / dinner GT3 Register event, this time to Meletos Restaurant in Coldstream. The prospect of a delightful sunny late afternoon drive across scenic hillsides followed by a walk around an idyllic vineyard before sitting down to a sumptuous dinner overlooking the vines at sunset sounded especially fine. At least in theory.

chatting despite the afternoon chill. A couple of the wiser navigators stayed in their vehicles I assume mentally preparing for the challenging drive to come. Either because of the December date or the time of day, but the evening runs seem to attract not only GT3 regulars but also a broader mix of members and cars. For those keeping score at home, the vehicle mix consisted of 991 & 996 GT3, 991 & 996 4S, 991 2S, 991 Turbo S and two 993’s.

In spite of the best laid plans of mice and PCV Register Captains, the reality can sometimes turn out to be somewhat different.

Fortunately for everyone, the rain started again just as my drivers briefing commenced thus keeping it short and to the point. Then with maps and notes distributed, we set off.

I knew the day was going to be challenging as I headed down Eastlink towards our meeting place in the Yarra Valley. My mighty GT3 didn’t really want to track straight on what seemed more like a lake than a freeway, wipers barely keeping pace with the deluge and the brakes, when needed, seemed very reluctant to pull the car up. Courageously, I made it to Tarrawarra, where the rain had thankfully stopped. But enough about me... On arrival at Tarrawarra I was delighted to see many of the 15 participants milling around happily 66

PORSCHE PARADE

Our route took us back towards Yarra Glen before turning onto the bypass and continuing on the Melba Highway towards Yea. As disappointed as we were with the weather, I am sure we were much happier than a convoy of about six or eight AC Cobras touring in the opposite direction with either no tops or with roofs down. Brrrrr. A right turn at the Healesville-Kinglake Road intersection had us moving towards Toolangi at a reasonable pace as the rain once again subsided. Avoiding some fallen branches and general debris, we enjoyed a traffic-free sprint down Myers Creek

Road to Healesville. From there (if you ignored the deliberate error in the run notes) it was an easy touring stage to our destination in Coldstream. We arrived at Meletos a little earlier than planned and any thought of wandering outside to enjoy the vineyard were dashed again by rain. Fortunately, the venue was able to accommodate us in a private area so we could mingle, stay warm, dry and hydrated until our table was ready. Dinner was advertised as their ‘Spring Banquet’, multiple courses of appetizer platters, pizzas, fish and beef mains, and a selection of desserts served over 90 or so minutes. The presentation of the food and the attentive service was duly matched by the taste and quality of all the dishes. Local wines and craft beers were readily available and sampled while the conversation flowed down and across our long, shared table well into the evening. A true banquet indeed! In closing I would like to thank Margaret and Dennis, Nikki and Carl, Maureen and Rodney, Anh and Richard, Jessica and Thomas, Julie and Chris and Helen and Linley for their support and contributions in making this dinner event so enjoyable. May the tradition continue!
