horizontally opposed Welcome to the 1st issue of Porsche Parade for 2021. Finally, after 12 months we have a full magazine of club events and some sense of normality! This issue sees a cracking start to the year with three motorsport events, five social events, five register runs, a PCV history lesson and of course another instalment of WIYG!

Surely it could not be a 994, that would be just too confusing as if it wasn’t bad enough.

I currently own a 981 but have also owned a 987 and I still have to think about it when I am recalling my cars.

And do not get me started on the Taycan Turbos. Who in the marketing department decided to call their brand-new flagship electric cars after its IC cars? I get that Porsche is built on tradition, but I think using the Turbo badge is a bridge too far. It has missed a golden opportunity to push forward with naming a new era in motoring.

The Germans are a very exacting bunch and thats what I love about their cars. The engineering and attention to detail is amazing! And there lies the problem I have with their internal numbering system. A system I could forgive the Italians and even the French, Where are the Turbos? but the Germans! Ok, so we all know Porsches as 911s, Caymans, Boxsters etc. But the internal numbering for the model i.e. 991, 992, 993 makes no sense to me or trying to explain it to the unconverted. Logically in German style it should be in numerical order and my 993 should be newer than a 992, right!

It just seems a little silly to me to leave the owner to explain to his friends why his new car is called a Turbo when it doesn’t have one without sounding like a complete nuf nuf!

president’s message It finally feels like we are getting back into action after a year of lockdowns and isolation. Despite our normally slow January because of holidays, in the first 3 months of this year we have already had 3 competition track events, 3 register runs and 5 social events varying from coffee and cars mornings, midnight cruises, a picnic in Como Park and a delightful summer run out through Yarra Glen and ending up at Coombe for high tea. These activities should give you a taste of what you can look forward to for the remainder of 2021.

2020/21

My thanks go out to Carly and Lisa and both the social and Competition committees for their tireless work in getting these events up. Despite the restrictions we all faced last year they had no negative influence on Porsche vehicle sales here in Victoria, in fact I believe some months hit record levels. This has flowed through to PCV’s membership continuing to rise and we are now at alltime record levels. Appropriately welcoming new members has been a concern for the committees, but it is now great to see them turning up at events and showing off their new prized possessions. Hopefully in late April we will get to hold our first Club Night since February 2020, giving new members an even better chance to mix and enjoy the company of our broad and diverse community.

Winton Sprints As I have previously mentioned, during the restrictions of 2020, all your organising committees continued to meet (thank goodness for Zoom) and plan the way ahead once we were free again to go out and enjoy our marvellous vehicles. This work has certainly already paid dividends and we are seeing a lot of imaginative new approaches. As has happened in many organisations, the effects of Covid have caused to thing a little differently on how we move forward and this is also true for PCV. In the year ahead I hope you will see more examples as we look to ways to freshen up our events and tailor them more to the preferences of our members.

Porsche Cars Australia have again generously provided support to PCV and we are pleased to announce that this year they will be the primary sponsor of our “President’s Day”, passenger ride track day event at Sandown in October. The 3 Melbourne dealers, PCM, PCB and PCB are also supporting the Club in many ways. We were very pleased to recently be invited to have Club members preview the Taycan release before it was shown to the public. The Taycan certainly is a very impressive vehicle. I just miss that typical Porsche engine note.

Although it has been great to get so many events going so far this year, this has imposed a lot of load on our organisers. The Como Park function with the need to meet all the council Covid protocols demanded enormous effort and the 14 February Winton competition event which was cancelled due to an unforeseen lock down, was miraculously reorganised to take place only 2 weeks later.

from pit lane Hi everyone and welcome to my first edition of “from Pit Lane” My name is Andrew Smith and I have inherited the role of Competition Director for PCV from Mark Horton Andrews since the beginning of this season.

And boy was it great to be back on the track……… After a brisk start it turned out to be a perfect day for good times with Stefan taking the chocolates with a new class track record. Not bad after being out of the saddle for so long.

Mark has done an amazing job in this position over the last 3 years and I would personally like to thank him for all the nurturing he has given me over this transition period. He has left me with incredibly big shoes to fill, and I only take a size 9!!! With the cancellation of our Competition season last year after just 2 events, it was with a fair bit of fanfare that we welcomed the easing of Covid-19 restrictions and the resumption of Competition events for 2021 @ Phillip Island in January. Whilst the day itself was great, the work that took place behind the scenes to get this event up must be acknowledged. Thanks must go to many people, but specifically Andrew Bonwick and Mark Horton Andrews for dealing with a myriad of legal issues that without their efforts, would not have allowed the event to proceed. But it did!!!

The Autumn Sprint at Sandown was our next event and again the weather Gods were shining down on us. With a full field and a waitlist for Entrée class entering early was essential. The track was fast and our seasoned veteran Peter Fitzgerald (sorry about the veteran bit Fitzy) broke his own M0 track record by 0.02 seconds. That’s one suped up Boxster!!!!! All of the results and more detail can be found further on in this wonderful magazine. Just a couple of special mentions…

Phillip Island Sprints Everyone had a great day and it was especially pleasing to be able to sit down during the lunch break and catch up face to face with our fellow drivers, rather than looking at a square box on a screen via zoom. Socially distanced of course!! Our next event was scheduled for Winton on February 14, but Daniel Andrews and his comrades put an end to that pretty quickly with a snap 5 day lockdown. Fortunately with some quick phone calls and some welcomed assistance from the staff at Winton Raceway, we were able to re-schedule the event for February 28, which just happened to be another cracking day! Almost all of our original entrants were able to make the revised

the socialist This is my 7th column as Social Director. And what a ride it has been! Just being in this role and appreciating the magnificent work of all the people on the Social Committee has been humbling. I keep repeating this point in different forms but quite simply the enthusiasm, capability, cooperation and good humour of all members of the Social Committee continues to amaze particularly as we emerge from lockdowns and make up for lost time. These are the people that conceive and bring to life the events that members have enjoyed so far this year. Five events to date with Tassie Grand Tour just around the corner and we are embarking on our first club night since lockdown at Seaworks Williamstown also in April. Keep your eyes peeled for that one. Russell Sturzaker has a few surprises in store. 2021 kicked off with Vickie’s very well received Midnight Cruise. What a treat to be out under lights on a beautiful summer’s evening. Next year the cruise may morph into

a run to include some nearby tasty rural roads. Get your high beams ready for that one. Kon Gogos has not only held one but two Porsches and Coffee runs. The relaxed format, great roads and food and drink to own account has proved so popular Kon has another one planned. Events this year have been so popular that they were typically booked out within a day of opening. Whilst this would indicate that we are doing something right we are also keen to find out what members prefer. A survey that is being prepared by Anna Cook and Mel Treloar will issue soon. We do encourage you to respond and have your say, to help guide us to provide the types of events you most want. We will be canvassing what you think about various event types, profiles and features and details such as preferred prices. I also note the huge amount of work that has gone into rescheduling the Tassie Tour from the COVID cancelled 2020 time slot to this year. Not the work of moments I can assure you and special thanks to organisers Alf Carrigan and Alison Belot and also Alan Hines and Gary Saber who helped with route checking.

After 5 or so years ownership of a 911 Carrera (997.2) with PDK transmission I wondered whether a Porsche with a manual gearbox could be more fun. Mind you, there is nothing wrong PDK transmission. It launches, it shifts at lightning speed and always ‘knows’ which gear to select and precisely when to shift, however I craved more involvement. I wanted to be responsible for a bigger part of the driving experience. Of course the manual gearbox alone might not be enough…to heighten the experience I would need more power underfoot, which was a tall order at that level. It had to be a ‘turbo’. There were usually 3 – 4 (997) Turbos for sale at any one time whilst I was looking but one finally came up for sale in Brisbane that was in my price range so I made the call. Information was exchanged but there were a few hold-ups as the owner was away (I believe he was a commercial pilot) and the person I was speaking to wasn’t in the position to do any more than answer questions. He couldn’t arrange to take the car to Porsche Brisbane for a pre-purchase inspection, so I’d have to wait…. yes, and it was black. My current car was black, and my wife’s Carrera was also black. Could I really cope with having another black car?

of the time- Brent Howard - was so excited for me on hearing the news, that he resigned his post of Co-Captain and signed me up! The 997.1 Turbo has phenomenal acceleration, and the all-wheel drive system offers the most secure cornering that I’ve ever experienced all whilst being remarkably easy to drive whether in traffic or on the open road. Of course nothing beats the experience of being on a racetrack in a car like this. After getting used to the car I did a driver training course with Evolve and also entered Entrée class 3 or 4 times to really feel how the car performed. The car was remarkably reliable (as expected) with services running as normal. We did have one hiccup on a weekend away at Warrnambool – the water-pump failed, requiring a tow back to Porsche Centre Melbourne. Margaret took a fantastic picture of me ‘sobbing’ on the side of the tow-truck (staged). We actually spent the next hour and a half watching the whales, got a tow-truck ride to the hotel and went out for an excellent dinner that night.

There wasn’t a particular hurry, so I had to wait a couple of weeks. In the meantime, Porsche Centre Doncaster had recently opened and were hosting their first PCV Club-Night & Presentation. Peter Fitzgerald was to give a talk on his experience in motor racing. It was a big event by club standards and the new showroom was soon packed to capacity. As luck would have it, at the rear of the showroom was a 911 Turbo which had just been traded-in. It had a manual gearbox, 53000km on the clock and it was white. With a showroom full of Porsche enthusiasts in attendance, I couldn’t be sure how many were interested in this car, so I arranged with one of the reps to pop by early the following day. The following morning I was at Porsche Centre Doncaster with my Carrera. The sales rep Jessica Dawson arranged an appraisal on my prospective trade-in, a quick test drive, we agreed on a price and within an hour or so I was on the phone to my wife to say that I’d just bought a Turbo! Delivery would be a week or so away (the car hadn’t yet been detailed etc). The current Turbo Register Co-Captain

Is there no limit to the fascinating variety of cars, mainly Porsches, chosen by PCV members? Lukas Michel has always loved cars and driving, with his first really fun toy being a heavily modified A-H Sprite. Porsches were always a favourite but he has only recently had the capacity to have what he likes and stimulated by a 40th birthday mid-life crisis, he began his affair with the marque. Serious thinking led to an ’88 3.3 Marine Blue Turbo in 2015 and membership of PCV, closely followed by an ‘86 Carrera, which wasn’t a keeper (regrettably). The Turbo now has 190 K, is well loved, in beautiful condition, but hasn’t been on the track. Next car was the ’87 Guards Red Carrera in 2016, which is a “bit of a beast”, with a 964 Turbo engine, 930 Turbo brakes and various upgrades. This has run Challenge Bathurst twice and is great fun on the track. Lukas enjoys this “loud obnoxious car”, playing with various wheels, of which he has about 15 sets together with RUF spoilers and other bits and pieces waiting in the wings. The delicious ’94 Aventurine Green 928 GTS was an impulse acquisition in 2016, is in superb condition, with 112K, and manual trans, having been converted from automatic. Lukas has run it at Sandown and really loves the handling. I haven’t heard anyone say that, as most people run these superb cars as cruisers. It is also a comfortable country cruiser, with excellent air con. It is amazing how many of these excellent cars are in carefully chosen PCV collections, although rarely seen on the road.

This reasonably recent member has created a very interesting collection and is obviously a great thinker and planner. He loves to drive the cars as much as he can as “that’s what they’re made for” and often has to move them around for storage. He thinks about other temptations and is obviously getting further into competition. There are a couple of useful garages at his parents’ house at Pt Lonsdale, which are generously offered frequently. The Sprite still lives there. Watch this space!

The Light Ivory ’73 2.4 S was converted from an original Japanese MFI car many years ago to 46 mm Webers and acquired by Lukas in 2017. It is close to 2.7 specs, has many improvements and has the fascinating look of old and maintained bits. It has all the authentic MFI pieces carefully collected and waiting. It’s fabulous to drive and comes alive (regularly) at 5000. A very recent acquisition is a 2000 mk 1 GT3, but already it’s done over 3000 ks on vigorous trips. It has KW coil overs, MK2 brakes, cargraphic exhaust, cup car shift linkage, BBS E88 wheels. There is an upcoming track day at PI and perhaps Bathurst.

Good bye 2020………Hello 2021 Wasn’t it great to be out of hibernation and back on the track at beautiful and sunny Phillip Island. After a Covid imposed 12 month track isolation, we were lucky enough to be greeted with warm sunshine for our first outing in almost a year. First of all, due credit must go to the MotorSport Committee who had to navigate a minefield of new regulations to get this event off the ground. The work put in behind the scene to get this event up and running needs to be highlighted with thanks to Mark Horton Andrews and Andrew Bonwick. With 79 competitors split over 4 groups plus 14 Entrée drivers, there was a great cross-section of both cars and drivers. The morning sessions produced some quick times considering the long layoff, whilst others slowly gained confidence and speed. Michael Bailey was fast out of the blocks with a 1:37.57 on his second flying lap, which is exceptionally quick.

After lunch Stefan decided to get serious and set a new class record of 1:37.49 pipping Michael’s time by a mere 0.08 !! I can tell you both of those cars came up VERY QUICKLY in my mirrors!! Now to the results………… In A class, Guy Lavoipierre pipped out “Wild Bill” Toohey by 0.212 with Richard Catchlove third. B class was a family affair with DJ Loypur heading up Danny with Daniel Reynolds third. C class and D class had Mark Chrzanowski and Garry Voges taking the chocolates respectively. Cup class saw Alan Rosedie Din ahead of Andrew Smith and Ray Gymer. Fitzy streeted Modified from Josef Smith and Adam Brewer. Stefan stole the show in GT class and Michael Bailey in Open.

Andy Hall did an excellent job with the Entrée members, organising some highly talented mentors. On that note it was great to see some “old faces” back in the fold again. Bob Hawker, Ben Faggetter and Tom Marks, we welcome you back and hope to see you at further track days passing on your considerable knowledge to our newer members. Also it was great to have Bruce and Petrina Astbury from MSCA and Dean Sammut from Evolve assisting Andy. brand”. Piero also chose two cars that “he would like to drive home” for special awards. The winners were the stunning 356A Cabriolet of Candice Field (a birthday present from her husband) and Justin Reid for his magnificent 911 Carrera 3.0. Congratulations to all the trophy and prize winners.

“Wow look at that!” Two boys marvelling at the detail of a Porsche engine bay is an age old symbol of the attraction of the Porsche brand that frequently builds from a young age. Automotive engineering at its finest. And what a simply wonderful display Clyde White and his team assembled. From a genuine 959 to a delectable lineup of 356s courtesy of the 356 Register, also with 911s, Caymans and Boxsters, 944s and 968s, GT cars and replicas. The Porsche sports car story was laid out for all to see with 60 cars on the lawns of Como North Park. For good measure there were another 100 members’ Porsches displayed on the adjacent Oval Number 2. We had 60 cars on display, 325 registered participants from PCV and the 356 Register and another 8 personnel from our enthusiastic sponsor Porsche Centre Melbourne. Piero Pellegrini, GM of Porsche Centre Melbourne, brought along a beautiful 718 Cayman GT4 to park beside their display of the latest offerings from the Porsche range. Piero and his team enthusiastically joined the throng, manning a small retail pop up promoting their Porsche Classic range

and overseeing the coffee and ice cream vans they generously supplied for our enjoyment. It was a day of contrasts with games and activities for the kids (and even some of the big kids), while others chose to have a quiet family picnic on the lawns. At least one member was so relaxed that she was caught dozing amongst the throng. Photos anyone? The sounds of Mark King Casey and Mason Fodera enlivened proceedings helping the majority of attendees to simply enjoy the opportunity for relaxed socialising around their shared passion for Porsche. The quote of the day came from PCM’s Piero. He loved that “PCV members were such wonderful ambassadors for the Porsche

Coffee and Cars at Lorbek Luxury Cars Sunday 14th March

We experienced one of those late summer days that early in the morning served up drizzle with the promise of sun that burst just before cars arrived at Lorbek Luxury Cars in Port Melbourne. One hundred cars arrived at scheduled times commencing from 8.20am for the Boxsters, and then marshalled by Clyde White, Linley Baxter and Garry Saber who were ready to greet everyone. After an hour the huge area in front of Lorbek’s was a Porsche-fest with many all-time favourites lined-up in their various models. Along the front of the showroom was a Taycan, a Panamera and a new Cayenne GTS LW (light weight). To see Porsches plugged in the charge stations was unique. Inside the showroom was the magnificent Carbon bodied 2020 935 owned by Rusty French who had revealed the imminent arrival of the car at a previous club night. Apparently mountains had to be moved to secure the car and accordingly it is the only one of its type in Australia.

Members’ cars of all types jostled for attention in the carpark. We had Boxsters, Caymans and all varieties of 911 vying for attention with some earlier models including 928s, 968s and Scott West’s beautiful white 1956 356 Speedster which stood resplendent beside Barry Pritchett’s searing blood orange 914/6. A favourite was Craig Rayner’s 968RS which is a faithful local development by Fitzgerald Racing of the very rare factory produced cars. Rare as they are Craig has two!

enjoy themselves. Rain, hail or shine you guys bring out your cars, whereas on a wet day members of other car clubs bring the family hatch-back rather than get their special car wet!’

On arrival members headed inside to Café Lorbek for a hot coffee and to enjoy the catered breakfast before wandering through the showroom, where at least sixty luxury cars were on display. With the average price tag of $320,000 one might think it’s a lot to pay, but if you forget about the money and think of it as an elixir of youth, it’s a bargain!

It was good also to see Vicki and Russell Sturzaker (looking fit after his recent hip operation. (Hip. Hip!) and President Tony Carolan and his granddaughter Jorj.

This event was a tour de force with one hundred and fifty two members attending and a strong waiting list too. We all know events don’t just happen, thanks very much Clyde White.

Clyde gathered everyone at the entrance to the showroom and thanked Club Members for their support by attending and displaying their cars. He further thanked Lorbek Luxury Cars and particularly Srecko and David Lorbek for their generous support and hospitality. Clyde presented Srecko and David with a gift of appreciation from the club. Srecko thanked club members for their attendance and welcomed supporting such events and looked forward to working with the club in the future. Linley Baxter extended his thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Club to Clyde White for organising the Coffee Morning at Lorbek’s and negotiating a wonderful outcome.

“Winton turned on a perfect Sunday morning.”

This was our first sprint at Winton since June 2019 and it was one that nearly didn’t happen due to the sudden lockdown for the weekend of our original Winton booking. Thanks to the efforts of our Motorsport team who were able to secure another date we were here ready to hit the track. A good contingent of drivers, marshals and helpers stayed Saturday night in Benalla and it was good to see the No Vacancy signs on the Motels and the Pub dining rooms busy. Winton turned on a perfect Sunday morning and although we had already had our “Zoom” drivers briefing it was decided to call another quick briefing to bring everybody together. This brought us back to a bit of normality that had been missing during the Covid restrictions. There were 5 run groups for the day with 56 competition and 10 entrée drivers. It was good to see a number of 991 GT3RS’s entered and also at the other end of the modern Porsche models there were 21 Caymans & Boxsters.

Ex-President Peter Harrison in his 996 GT3 had a minor off which ended his day early with a bent rim and Michael Bailey in his Miami Blue 991 GT2RSMR also had a spin in front of the crowd at Turn 2 caused by a deflated rear tyre, luckily no damage, good save Michael. Danny Loypur took out B Class by the finest margin of the day 0.0132, it may have been a different result if his son DJ hadn’t been playing Golf that weekend. Richard Catchlove in his newly acquired 718 Cayman came close to taking out A1 Class against Bill Toohey in his 981 Cayman S. With a total of 18 sessions and fine Winton weather the day was definitely declared a success, many thanks to the PCV Motorsport crew of Officials, Marshals and Helpers for putting on a great day. The summer run for 2021 proved to be a very enjoyable day for the fortunate 100 participants who booked in early for this eagerly anticipated event. It was a warm sunny day for the last day of summer, and we met at a very civilised Sunday hour of 11.15 am at Porsche Centre Doncaster for coffee and pastries. There was friendly chatter evident as past and new members met together and roamed the show room surveying the new Taycan 4S. Taycan Turbo on the showroom floor, and the Taycan Turbo S elevated on a hoist. Clyde brought the group together, welcoming the new members Jason & Sharon, John & Mary, Joe & Pam and John & Ally to their first social run.

Your correspondent was followed by Flavio and his wife Samantha, joining our run in a Taycan Turbo S. They followed us for the whole run, which was very kind of them, as this black supercar could have overtaken us swiftly and silently at any point with its 0-100 acceleration time of 2.8 seconds!

Clyde also particularly thanked Flavio, Natalie and Porsche Centre Doncaster for hosting our club for morning coffee and a plethora of tasty morsels and presented Flavio with a gift from the club in appreciation.

We headed north through Eltham, Diamond Creek, Yarrambat, Whittlesea, Kinglake, Dixons Creek and Yarra Glen before arriving at Dame Nellie Melba’s home at Coombe Cottage. Parked Porsches lined the round driveway of the homestead, with the Taycan Turbo S taking pride of place in front of the restaurant.

Courtney, who gave us an insight into the life and times of Australia’s most famous operatic diva Dame Nellie Melba. Coombe Cottage was built in 1912, and was designed by architect John Grainger (father of musician Percy Grainger). Dame Nellie lived there as her main residence until her death in 1931. The property was opened to the public by her family in 2014. The afternoon High Tea which followed not only allowed us to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine, delicious cakes, scones and sandwiches, but to reconnect with friends on such a beautiful afternoon. Thanks to Clyde White, Geoff Mould and the Social committee for arranging such an enjoyable event.

Welcome back to Sandown after an absence of more than 12 months. Early autumn weather turned on its best for us after a stretch of 5 days of rain, which ended the day before our meet. The day saw only a handful of Cup Cars make it, due to a State round being held at Winton. Well done to Andy Hall and Jamie Lovett with second and third overall for the weekend there. The entrée group was very strong, with 14 entrants on the day. A class saw Bill Toohey take out 1st place with a very respectable 1:22:1, followed by Andrew Goulsbra in 2nd place and Guy Lavoipierre in 3rd . B class had the Cayman driven by Danny Loypur take out 1st place, followed by Dan Reynolds in the 3.2 Carrera taking 2nd , with Dennis Bath in 3rd. Carlo Fasolino was penalised 10 seconds for turning up with a dirty car!!!!!

Modified class was won by the quickest Boxster I’ve ever seen, driven by both Christian and Peter Fitzgerald, coming in first and second respectively. Modified 1 saw Rex Broadbent’s extremely quick 911 RS replica poking its head into GT territory times, showing how good these cars were and still are – time was 1:21:72. Open class was won by Sally-Anne Haines with 1:15:0, also being second outright!!! Thanks to all the volunteers, flag marshals and all involved that helped to put on a great day. Also thanks to Dean Sammut and Ricky Capo from Evolve Driver Training for volunteering their time to assist us with the mentoring of our Entrée drivers. Let’s do it again in a fortnight with the Annual PCV 6-hour Mobil 1Regularity.

C class saw 3 G-series cars taking out the top 3 places, with Mark (the silver fox) Chrzanowski in his trusty blue and well-worn 911SC in first place, followed by Grant (Jester) Stephenson in 2nd, and Jim Adamson in 3rd. Cup class on the day was made up of only 3 cars. Alan Rosedie Din did a 1:16.9 with Andrew Smith making up a lot of ground and time on some new boots, posting his PB with a 1:17:8. D class was the all-familiar “Phil and Garry show”, with Phil leading the day by 0.0361. Garry, that was too close to believe – I’m sure you and Phil had some banter over that one! GT class hosted the largest number of cars out of all classes. Stefan posted the fastest time of the day with a 1:14:78 in a GT1, while Matthew Slavin posted a 1:20:5 in a GT4. GT3 1st place was Peter Harrison with 1:19:73.

Like many of us enjoying post lockdown Melbourne I am keen to use my car as often as I can. The months of not being able to use it – cut deep. If you add in the fact I bought and sold classic pre 1980 911’s during lockdown, you will understand (and probably share) my renewed enthusiasm where Porsche club drives are concerned. So when friends Jason and Jean Bush mentioned they were registered – I needed to think about also entering …..for a millisecond or 2. My enthusiasm, however, waned when I saw the weather forecast - 35 degrees C for greater Melbourne. Bearable in the morning but warming up very quickly. Not exactly optimum fun conditions for a 43 year old 911 with indifferent air conditioning. People who own one know. What would members think if we turned up in my daily driver Golf GTi or my wife Peta’s Kia Sportage? As the day drew closer I checked the weather in more detail and opined that if we did the run and made the most direct route home we might still enjoy it. So, after consultation with my Porsche partner – we bit the bullet and took the Carrera 3 litre – sans a/c. At least I now had a kmh speedo and didn’t have to convert the directions from mph to kmh any more …. Oh the luxury and convenience! We arrived at the meeting point at Essendon Fields and met friends old and new. I also spied a delightful little 1968 911T Targa, owned by Terry Rafferty. Having owned a 68 until recently I figured that if Terry could do it – so could we. After the briefing and some hilarity Kon asked for a volunteer to write the article….. I suddenly felt the need to check something in my car and moved away. You can imagine my surprise when my wife Peta thrust her hand in the air – and said, I volunteer Justin Reed. Perhaps it was payback 56

for not having working air conditioning? The run itself was great – compact yet fun. Having moved from Sydney 5 years ago my wife and I enjoy these runs as we learn new roads, and new venues. The roads were great, and I marvel at the proximity of the “country” to northern metro Melbourne. Peta grew up on a farm near Dubbo in western NSW – so I was receiving lessons and a running commentary on the types of farms, the types of trees and the types of livestock we passed. As a farm girl Peta was greatly enthused as we passed an egg farm, closely followed by a cheese maker. As we turned onto Plenty Road we wondered where the banked-up traffic was headed. I was greatly relieved we weren’t stuck in it. We were also greatly relieved to not be at the front of the run, and wish to compliment the navigator and driver Christopher Smith of the ice blue metallic 911SC who we followed for the entirety of the run. Diversity of cars on the run was great. Having owned 1968 911L coupe until 2020 I was delighted to see Terry driving his 1968 911T Targa with gusto. Cars then ranged from my 77 Carrera 3.0, a few G series impact bumper 911s, through Boxster, Cayman, Macan, 996, 997 right up to 991 GT3RS series 2 and a 992 Cabriolet. Speaking of cars…. I’m now signing off to scan Carsales and enthusiast websites for a late model 944 or an early Boxster. The one prerequisite for this “summer run” Porsche ……… (you guessed it) will be working and effective air conditioning!

Good things come to those who wait and we certainly waited to be back on the register run wagon. Saturday 27th March kicked off 2021 for the Mid 911 Register with a run to the Black Horse Hotel, Bulla. Meeting at the Gisborne McDonalds an excited and enthusiastic group of PCV members gathered for what would be a great day. As always, a great mix of old, new, 911, Boxster and Cayman attended. Of note, was a 1968 911 Targa and a 2021 911 Targa. This is what the register runs are all about. Variety and inclusiveness. After the usual formalities and welcoming returning member Steve White, we headed off to The Stables for morning tea. The sight of air cooled, water cooled and turbo power Porsches starting up and moving off together brought a smile to all of our faces. And together they stayed. With minimal traffic, members enjoyed the roads around Spring Hill and rolled into The Stables in an orderly fashion filling the carpark. The stables provided great coffee, fabulous New York Cheesecake and Baklava (thank you to Gina and Kosta) whilst we all gathered again for some long overdue conversation. As we were walking out a large group of Hot Rods rolled in, thus an obligatory walk through the sea of Hot Rods was required before getting back on the road for the second leg to The Black Horse Hotel. Watchbox Road and Bourke and Wills track rarely disappoint and today was no exception. Enjoying our cars in their natural environment is a big part of any register run. Finishing off on Wildwood Road we turned into our final destination for lunch. After an amazing antipasto we all enjoyed a fabulous lunch. Rahul of The Black Horse Hotel promised a great meal and he didn’t disappoint. Conversation was flowing. Wine was being given away. Run to Panton Hill Story: Oltem Pantall

The first of the Modern 911 Register Runs for the year started with a little cool and cloudy morning. Our meeting place was at Stonehouse Café in Warrandyte. Although inside the cafe was warm and welcoming we decided as everyone was arriving to congregate outside to catch up with friends and meet new members. This happened around our Porsches, some newer and some not so new but still in excellent condition. After Kon’s briefing we started our run with a U turn which turned out to be a little challenging with the morning traffic. Since most of us decided to park on the main road instead of the off street parking on the side of the cafe. Once on the way some decided to wait for Kon to lead and as it turned out that wasn’t a good idea. Kon decided to see if everyone was paying attention to the run notes he prepared (that was his reason). As we approached a right hand turn where the green bus shelter was noted, continued straight and about five other cars followed. Once we got back to the designated road it was obvious this was going to be a very enjoyable drive along some very Porsche, and need I say it, “friendly roads”.

On our arrival some photos were taken of our cars and a group photo which everyone thought was a good idea. Michael, the owner of the historical Panton Hill Hotel, greeted us at the door and made us welcome which was a pleasant surprise. Once settled we ordered according to our preference, rather than a preset menu, which everyone enjoyed, along with catching up with the latest news and meeting some new members. Like every good day it came to an end where we slowly started to leave and head back home. But as we were leaving the heavens opened up with a light shower and well into our trip back home it started to rain. Although it started as a cool and cloudy morning it turned out a very enjoyable day. Will catch up again on the next run.

Some of the roads were a little familiar I think, as we headed north through Christmas Hills, Yarra Glen before we started heading south, which may have surprised some, on the roads chosen. This was needed to prepare us for what was coming up. At Coldstream we turned left onto what turned out to be a very nice back road with some surprisingly nice country side. Well, what a great run and a great day to finally get on the road and blow away the ‘Covid 19 cobwebs’. I think I speak for all the attendees that it was a great day. Our meeting place in the open at the Olinda Creek hotel in Lilydale was a little different from past runs in that due to Covid 19 we were not able to initially gather inside a venue. However, the morning was clear and bright, and the usual pre-chat and introductions were done with the required coffee etc available from a nearby café. It is always interesting to also talk to ‘passers-by’ who cannot fail to be impressed with a gathering of beautiful cars. It’s great of course to see the various ‘renditions’ of the Boxster / Cayman family with the White 2011 Spyder of Travis Carlin looking very ‘sharp’. The newest car in attendance was the 2019 718 Cayman of Susan and Ian Cummin looking very ‘menacing’ in its grey metallic livery. Plus my navigator and friend Colin a past president of a Dromana based car club the SPC&HCC (he also lusts after my Boxster S !!) He was extremely impressed. These members and guests certainly (in my view) picked a great run for their first outing. After the usual briefing from Carlo plus myself volunteering to be the scribe (Carlo advising “no scribe no run”) we were on our way. As is often the case the requirement to read the route notes is ESPECIALLY important as if the notes say sharp left it, means sharp left. I counted 4 cars (myself included) which had to do a 360 to return to the route. From then on it was a great route that Carlo had planned. Being reasonably early in the morning, we pretty much had the route to ourselves and were able to experience the real capability and character of our cars while being aware of our driving responsibilities on public roads.

For those of us that have driven the “Reefton Spur” it is a great run not only for the Spur itself but the style of roads leading into it. The Spur is all about the joy of realising that we own a car that enables us to understand how well balanced our cars are on a road that tests all the capabilities of the car we are lucky to drive, while making the journey fun. I for one ended the first part of the run upon arrival at the Black Spur Inn with a huge ‘smile on the dial’. What was even more enjoyable was the ability to drive with the top down and hear the ‘tune’ exiting from the engine behind our seats. Lunch was taken at the Black Spur Inn and as usual this gave us all another opportunity to get to know our fellow Boxster / Cayman members a little better and say hi to our new members, the quality of the food was first class. The run ended with the usual raffle with the winners going home with a bottle of fine wine. All in all, a great day a great drive, great conversation, and a great run home via the “Reefton Spur” again if you just had to do it again (I did). Thanks to Carlo for a great run.

It has been done before and we will probably do it again - a Midnight Cruise. On the back of a lacklustre 2020 event calendar PCV thought outside the box(ster) - couldn’t resist that one – for this event held on January 9th. 30 cars and 51 of their passengers congregated in the car park of McDonald’s East Doncaster in a scene reminiscent of American Graffiti or Fast and the Furious depending on how good your memory is for iconic Hollywood cinema. Members hadn’t seen each other for months nor given the Porkers a spin due to a small round spiky problem. After a good hour of gas bagging, collecting a stash bag and eager to put their foot on the gas, our group departed at 11.45pm and headed for the city. The Eastern Freeway was an effortless passage to the Yarra Boulevard backlit with the cityscape enroute to Vic Roads roadworks. Not keeping a good tribe down, we detoured through the CBD taking in the sights of the cemetery and Vic Market after dark. The westerly drive directed us through Footscray and into the quiet seaside town of Williamstown. The perfect weather and strategically placed speed bumps enticed several drivers to pause on the esplanade and soak up the urban twinkle across the bay. It was touch and go leading up to this event as to whether the majestic Melbourne skyline would be visible from the Westgate as Vic Roads had been improving the megastructure in the upcoming weeks. Thankfully it was open ensuring a splendid vista and uncomplicated final commute to McDonalds Chadstone where diehards chowed down on some well-earned early morning junk food. “I’ll have the Tuna, no crust”….. Club Awards - The Don Tryhorn Perpetual Plaque On the Club Website, under Club Info there is tab called Roll of Honour, and it is in this section that we show listings of Past Presidents, Life Members, Club Champions, Hall of Fame Winners and the holders of Other Club Awards. In this issue of Porsche Parade we take a look at the background behind the Don Tryhorn Perpetual Plaque, we’ll look at Don - the Man, the Award, and some of his Achievements.

Away from the Club, Don owned the Pine Hill Caravan Park on the Warburton Highway at Lilydale.

His interests also included visiting interesting places such as Tibet, and he was particularly interested in martial arts (which can be useful if the natives aren’t friendly once you arrive). During these various pursuits, Don found time to become actively involved in a number of sports, principally swimming, weight-lifting, football and martial arts. His interest in sporting cars developed in parallel, commencing with a string of Triumphs - TR3A, TR4 and TR5, through to a Bathurst Monaro, L34 Torana, an MGC and a Volvo 242GT for those other moments. However it was in his first Porsche a 2.7 911S Targa that Don’s skill as a driver really developed, seeing him take out the coveted National Motorkhana Title at the 1985 Easter Nationals. But it was in his next Porsche, a 2.7 Carrera in which he became Class 2 - Club Champion in 1982. During this time Don also became one of the founding Members of PORA (the Porsche Owners Racing Association), which was the beginning of Carrera Cup Racing here in Australia.

Other Porsche models soon joined Don’s stable, with his skill as a driver being rewarded when he became Outright Club Champion in 1985 following this up again in 2006. Don also raced overseas, particularly in Macau where he was both a member, and advisor to the Hong Kong Gentleman’s Racing Club, which eventually became Porsche Racing Hong Kong. The members there affectionately called him “Mr Don”, and as Don was not a big man, he was also respectfully referred to as the “Little Man from Australia”. Don enjoyed any form of motorsport that included a Porsche, and it was with best mate, and fellow club member Dennis O’Keefe that the two enjoyed great times competing in many Targa Events in Don’s Signal Green 3.6 litre 964 Carrera RS.

The Don Tryhorn Perpetual Plaque Commencing in 2008, the Don Tryhorn Perpetual Plaque was raised to incorporate the Outright Club Driver Champion of the Year Award, which recognises the best vehicle & driver combination in relation to overall participation, performance and skill. It is clearly intended that this award is for the most consistent driver overall across a range of performance and skill related driving events. A Plaque worthy of celebrating the tenaciousness, skill and true competitor that was Don Tryhorn. Written by another of Don’s friends, and one of his fiercest competitors in Peter White. So do yourself a favour, it truly is a great read, and gives a further insight into the man who will always have his name on The Don Tryhorn Perpetual Plaque. Author’s Note: Having known Don from the day he joined the Porsche Club of Victoria, until his sudden and unexpected passing in December 2007, I was fortunate to have been one of those who were able to call him their friend. Writing this article has indeed brought back some fabulous memories of times that both I, and many others enjoyed in Don’s company, from Sprint Meetings, Social Events, Ski Weekends, SA/Vic Interclub Meetings at Mt Gambier, to the Interstate National Meetings, Pool Parties and serving on the Committee, Don was always there with his cheeky grin and fabulous sense of humour.. I would also like to thank, Dennis O’Keefe and Kaye Tankard for assisting me with information and sharing some of their recollections of Don’s time with us, and of the enviable range of Porsches that he owned while we knew him ….
