You may recall from the last issue that our President and Vice President attended the Porsche Clubs International meeting in Finland. Andrew had mentioned what nice guys the VP and President form Dubai were and showed me the incredible collection of cars that Karim the President had including: a Carrera GT, three 993 Turbos and a 996 GT2. A few weeks later my wife who had been researching a destination for our winter holiday suggested we go to Dubai since she had worked there 10 years ago. The beaches, hotel, pools and shopping looked great so the plans were made.

On the competition side we have a full grid of stories covering the Annual Sandown 4 hour, Haunted Hills Hill Climb and the Winton / Deca weekend. Social steps up to with stories on the Autumn Run, South Australia Tour and the PCM Club Night and we have no less than seven Register Run Reports!

president’s message

Andrew Bonwick President president@pcv.com.au

Tony Carolan Vice President & Competition Director vp@pcv.com.au

Welcome to the winter edition of Porsche Parade. One of the pleasing developments over the last six months has been the auctioning of club membership numbers. Starting off at the annual dinner dance last year and continuing through the number of club nights, the club has raised considerable money and a lot of excitement and interest in auctions for a particular club number. Some of the interests for me is the social director knocked down one to me as a tree bid. I now know a lot more about the astounding 956 than I did before. Of more importance is the additional money for us to be able to support the Country Fire Authority, which is recognized and really appreciated by the CFA brigades when we visit at our club runs for morning tea. Club members have also been participating in the track program since the last edition of the parade. This has included the very successful Sandown 240 regularity, which was supported by Liqui Moly and by Porsche Cars Australia. This is a very important event from a number of perspectives. Firstly, it’s a track event where a wide number of club members and people from other clubs in Australia now routinely participate. It is very financially profitable for the club. It’s also a different type of event in a different motorsport skill. We also had our traditional Winton/DECA, event over the weekend 18, 19 June. The weather was kind on both days which is always helpful. Members and their supporters were treated to the side-by-side runs on the DECA Skidpan, which is always highly entertaining. Numbers at track events can still be a little challenging. The club needs to continue to review the events that it offers, and the attractions and pricing of those events for members. There may be a question as to the continued place of DECA in our calendar. As a standalone single Motorkhana, it’s not a profitable event. If we can’t find other motorkhana circuits to add in, it may be a casualty of a look at the way that we

offer events to our members. Tony Carolan the competition director is looking for other tracks, but it is more difficult than it used to be.

Michael O’Brien Treasurer treasurer@pcv.com.au

A number of club members are doing some preliminary investigations on the club running a bi-annual 24 hour, possibly commencing at the back end of 2017. This is a substantial financial commitment by the club. It’s also our substantial commitment of a wide group of club members in terms of the organization of such a complex event. Because of this, the club will consider if at a committee level, whether it is a proposal we should support. If that is agreed, then it will be presented to the members at the AGM for their approval. This is not a step that we take lightly, but a 24-hour club level motorsport event would be an iconic achievement for the reputation of the club, potentially a very profitable event and an event for our members to be successful at.

NevilleSampson Secretary secretary@pcv.com.au

Ron Widdison Porsche Parade Editor editor@pcv.com.au

Attendances on social and registered events continued to remain high, commensurate with the the quality of the events that the social committee and the register captains organize. The magazine contains reports on the autumn run, the register runs to Kyneton and to the Clarkfield Hotel as well as a very successful run to Inverloch. Another notable upcoming function is the Ladies Luncheon on the 16 of July. This is an excellent initiative. I hope that all those who attend have a great event.

from race control After an initial hectic start to our season with 4 events in the first 3 months we have had an unusually long layoff with an 8 week gap between our 4 Hour regularity in April up to our traditional Winton / DECA weekend, which was held the weekend after Queens Birthday this year. The calendar this year has been particularly difficult to put together, as despite many clubs experiencing reduced numbers at their events, we are seeing new clubs spring up, like the Toyota BRZ86 guys, and the competition for track bookings is getting quite intense. In addition the rise of drifting as a legitimate motorsport event, even if it isn’t our thing, is increasing the pressure on track availability. Nevertheless the rest of the season looks pretty good with 5 more events after Winton / DECA rounding off with President’s Day at a slightly later mid November date this year. In late April we held our annual 4 hour regularity event, the Sandown 240. Again this year it turned out to be an exceptionally good event. There were 29 teams entered with 118 drivers participating, split approximately 50:50 between PCV teams and teams from other clubs. The camaraderie at these events is something special, with just as many pit crew helpers as drivers and lots of

good natured banter between all. As some new entrants this year found however, this is serious competition and there were many very tired drivers at the end of the day. Fortunately the weather was magnificent, not too cold and not too hot for the cars. Unfortunately, in some ways, the event was dominated by PCV teams that came in first, second and third with the winners being the very professional Weltmeister team of Ben Faggetter, Bob Hawker, Phil and Melanie Treloar. I only say that the PCV domination was unfortunate in the sense that we do want to continue to encourage other clubs to keep entering. Prior to the Sandown 240 and since our first event at Phillip Island that was covered in the last Porsche Parade, we did have a very well supported and successful sprint day at Sandown in early March and a hill climb at Bryant Park near Moe in early April. I’m sure many of you will recall the extremely challenging event at Bryant Park in 2015 where we were subjected to freezing cold conditions and hail which saw the event cancelled. Well, the bad memories clearly haven’t faded as the turnout was very low despite it being a beautiful Autumn day.

more of our members coming to track days to experience their vehicles in the environment that they were designed for. Track days are truly great fun. It is a safe environment in which to let our prized possessions stretch their legs. There are lots of experienced track drivers there to give you tips and as our esteemed President recently put it so succinctly, you can have all this for an entry price of less than a 2 point speeding ticket. I would love to see more members at our next track event and all the best to our competitors for the remainder of the competition year. Safe travelling. Tony Carolan, Competition Director

As mentioned above, numbers of entrants have been up and down this year, but generally heading in the right direction. We are seeing a lot of new entrants through Entree class and a lot of new cars that will fit into the newly introduced GT classes. Nevertheless we would still like to see

social corner Welcome to the Second Edition of the Social Corner for 2016. Already half way through the year, and whilst Victoria seems to be experiencing a ‘traditional’ wet winter, we continue to keep ourselves warm with great Social events through the colder months. Since our last edition we’ve been able to share with you another great Club Night, this time at Porsche Centre Melbourne, showcasing the newly renovated facilities both showroom and workshops, with the opportunity for in-depth ‘behind the scenes’ tour. An engaging, thrilling and undoubtedly the ‘most affordable air cooled engine’ track event with our annual GoKart Challenge, this time at a new track at Ace Karts, Albion, and our Autumn Run to Helen’s Hill Estate Coldstream, and finally bringing in the season with the Winter Run to Macedon Ranges Hotel.

A big thank you to all that make this Club a great community. Please feel free to contact me for more information in regards to Social Events and/or the Social Committee. Regards, Alex Harmati PCV Social Director E: social@pcv.com.au

I’d also like to warmly welcome our new members, and reflect on how our members not only embrace our events through participation, but how we openly embrace each other, from new members to fellow members. Through our passion for Porsche we are a Club, but whose members spirit goes beyond the brand that brought us together. As, we welcome, we share, we engage, we celebrate, we laugh, we embrace, we regard, we cheer, we volunteer, we watch, we listen, we learn, we chat, we befriend, we assist, we give, we donate, we compete, we socialise, as we are the Porsche Club of Victoria. Club Night at Porsche Centre Melbourne 26th April 2016

Even though the previous day, Anzac Day, was a public holiday and one would assume to have enough time to get organised to be at Club Night on the 26th, I still found myself on Punt Rd in horrific traffic. Ironic - being stuck in grid lock en route to the world’s most beautiful vehicles’ Melbourne Chapter social event. I detoured the Dandenong Rd to Toorak Rd section of Punt Rd by tacking through Orrong Rd and Alexandra Ave but couldn’t avoid the carpark between Alexandra to Victoria Pde. Deep breathing, ABC Classical FM, nothing reduced my anxiety. 6.36pm and I had just passed over Bridge Rd. The text message alerts only added to my stress. Aaargh! Did I mention I had just put in 7 hours in front of my computer malfunction? A pandora’s box of first world problems. I nearly ran a yellow but detected the steely stare of the red light camera before it was catastrophic. Could this trip take any longer? I have to be up tomorrow morning at 0415. Valuable club night minutes were disintegrating. Some slick, starting grid manoeuvres ensured I was ahead of the pack and a bit of local parking knowledge saw me arrive at PCM at approximately 1845. Greeted by a very inviting display of shiny big new toys and stunning PCV members I entered the newly refurbished PCM. An extensive collection of post Porsche Parade Magazine editions were generously up for grabs

going back some 20 years. I took it upon myself to seek Dietfried’s birth publication. It was like getting his 1 year old baby book. Flicking through the pages of past publications was like going back in time, reminiscing about fashion, car models and prices. Adjacent to the “bookshop”, a generous discount on Porsche Clothing was offered. Fake it till you make it at half price. Off to the bar! The ever professional bar staff were obliging patrons with a quality selection of red, white and sparkling beverages. Soda water for me- boring but safe or should that be safe but boring. Members began to descend on the aromatic Buffet. On offer were rolls, rice salad, green salad, coleslaw, roast meat and chicken, catering for most types of food intolerances / requirements/ fussiness. Do you think when people read this article in 20 years time they will ask “what is gluten free?” Our fearless Social Committee Leader Alex introduced our equally fearless President Andrew, who asked our equally fearless new members to stand up and introduce themselves and announce their cars. As the new members declared their vehicles, the seated crowd responded with “Ooohs” and “Aaahs”: Karl -993, Peter - 911, Shaun - 986 Boxster, Tanya - Macan, Anya – Boxster, Anthony - Boxster and Spyder replica and Jane - 993 RS which almost incited the masses into a frenzy. Porsche family member Tony made a dedicated appearance after injuring his left arm in a cycling incident with a van the previous week. For his effort, he was presented with a Porsche Gift bag and the ultimate cycling safety accessory – a bell. Tony tried to persevere through the irritating audio system (perhaps we should try some German tech there too?) cutting out. He made club announcements detailing New Cup Car Class where Jamie Lovett (a Treloar by association)

and a few new names are kicking goals as well as the Sandown 4 hour Regularity event , Melanie Treloar gaining highest place followed by her father and Frank in 3rd. Tony reminded the gathering that events are free for members to view and also thanked the tireless group that run events. He stipulated that PCV continues to innovate and bring the best sporting events to members. Next up, Ken Anson with Register updates. The Torque Tube mob on April 3 had 17 attendees. May would be a busy month with the Turbos running to Holgate on early Sunday morning on May 15. That area is Ken and Harriet’s backyard and he offered to disclose tips for spending the day around Woodend and Mt Macedon to interested drivers. The ever stylish and sophisticated Mid 911 register would be visiting Parnassus Winery via Noojee and Baw Baw being. Graeme Anderson co- captaining with Ken. The 993 register – possibly the most envied??? – were off to Gippsland and Inverloch. It was to be Morning Tea free. Perhaps to save money for the Charddy at lunch. Ken assured there were many options for Morning tea on all runs at various heritage listed sites.

Lastly, 996, 1994-2004 watercooled. Bidding was furious. $50, $100, $200, $250, $300. Controversy at $325 where it was “SOLD” but reneged by Alex when a very real number of $400 was accepted. If you weren’t tuckered out by activities thus far or second (or third) buffet helpings, the feature presentation by President Andrew and Injured Tony would certainly hold your attention…. PORSCHE ICE DRIVING IN FINLAND… WOO HOO. Unbelievably it was disclosed the Modern 911 register still needed a Register Captain and CoCaptain. The upcoming Go Kart event was publicised with a great hook line – “Cheaper to smash a go kart than a Porsche”. The inaugural Ladies event for 2016 was also announced. A most fabulous luncheon in Brighton with entrepreneur guest speaker on July 16. Alex wrestled the microphone off Ken and with Carly’s guidance began the auction of club membership numbers. Money raised would be donated to the CFA. Does anyone have proof of that or are Carly and Alex conspiring to buy a new car? 956 was first cab off the rank (ouch). $50 inflated exponentially to $250 – SOLD to Andrew Bonwick! 964 (Dietfried) was tempting at $100 but $200 then $300 quickly followed and I tapped out mentally. 987 (Cayman and Boxster) up for grabs next starting at $100. Crickets were heard when Alex asked for $300, eventually settling for $200.

Obviously when I say I would give my right arm to do this I didn’t think it was literal but Tony made me think long and hard about making that statement. Nevertheless, it looks and sounds like the best fun on (a very cold part of) Earth. Andrew and Tony were invited to icy Finland for the International Presidents’ Meeting. 210 attended including representatives from Tassie, NSW, WA and NZ. An eclectic mix of clubs were represented focussed more so on models. Andrew reported, in comparison, PCV is a mix of social and competitive, a club very well structured and run. Guests were instructed to view the video of ice driving on the PCV website. Ice driving is open for ~6months of the year and ~1700 drivers have a crack every year. (Like what I did there?). The 2 ½ day excursion involved 130 brand new cars with 2-4mm studs on the tyres being sacrificed to groups of 5 not so amazing drivers. Gold moonsuits with 8 layers of insulation were the fashion du jour somewhat akin to a scene out of James Bond Moonraker. Extra curricular activities included Reindeer meet and greets, dog sleighs or fireside cultural lessons. Andrew and Tony closed their presentation with a big thank you to Porsche for the opportunity.

I didn’t do the tour as I was too busy participating in conversation with fellow members and maybe having seconds of the scrumptious hearty catering but according to my source (who may drive a Mazda 6 hence easily impressed by the stunning feat of technology and art presented before him) the tour was most informative albeit hasty. He was on the last tour of the night so perhaps people were eager to vacate the premises but still here are the facts he recalls…. The race cars at the start of the tour, which they do maintenance on, and taking a photo of Kane in front of them. Workshop “pretty bloody big and schmick clean; It goes all the way down and all the way up”. Area for detailing next to the showroom where the Porsche is detailed for the owner to pick up the next day, even clean the fingerprints off. Not a person you would want in the witness box but you get the picture- PCM is sublime. 9pm we called it stumps and it was a few hands on deck to get tables, chairs, catering, bar facilities etc packed away. I love this club – such a wonderful part of life I am privileged to be a part of. As always thanks to the Social Committee, Carly and Lisa, and all Club members involved for making another night in PCV history possible.

The General Manager of PCM Piero Pellegrini followed the lucky gents with an overview of PCM’s new home. The state of the art facility showcases Porsche’s offerings- a new workshop, new cafe, valet parking service, historical exhibition and merchandise. The floor was open to questions which benefitted Alex’s fitness regime as one microphone meant he had to run from one speaker to the next. “Why did the silos go” one member asked to which GM answered “we needed the landscape to be bigger” but highlighted the Porsche sign is still on the corner. Tours of the premises were offered to groups of 20 by Kate.

991 GT3 RS in Lava Orange

Porsche Club of United Arab Emirates logo

what’s in your garage?

United Arab Emirates Porsche Club Vice President Shahid A Baloch with his 991 GT3 RS

The 911 Gods must have been shining on me. I checked our flight status and we were cruising into Dubai at 911 kmph for our family holiday. This was an omen that it was going to be a fun WIYG experience! I had pre organised to do a story on the UAE’s Porsche Club President Karim Al-Azhari’s amazing collection before we left Australia. This included: Carrera GT 2005, 996 GT2 2003, 993 Turbo 1998, 993 Turbo 1997, 993 Turbo 1997, 965 Turbo 3.6, 965 Turbo 1991, 930 SE “Flachbau” Turbo Cabriolet 1989, 930 Targa 1988, 911 WTL Cabriolet 1986, 1977 911 Turbo Carrera 3.0 And also a Mercedes SLS Black-Series, Mc Laren Mercedes SLR Cabriolet, Lamborghini LP640, AMG E63, Mercedes 190 Evolution II, Ferrari F355 Spyder. Unfortunately, Karim had to cancel due to other commitments, but Vice President Shahid Baloch graciously agreed to show me his cars at the last minute.

I must say it was a little daunting negotiating the narrow down ramps of the carpark in a wide body RS worth $387K (AUD)! Luckily it was PDK (as they all are) so changing gears in a left hand drive car was one less thing I had to worry about. We negotiate the speed humps onto the street and Shahid plants the foot in the C4S. I have a huge grin on my face as I follow; I can’t believe I’m driving a 991 GT3 RS in Dubai!!

“I have a huge grin on my face as I follow; I can’t believe I’m driving a 991 GT3RS in Dubai!”

Shahid picked me up at our hotel in his 991 GT3 RS and we drove back at speed to collect the 993 C4S. I had not driven in a current RS before so the ride through Dubai was a real treat. But it got a whole lot better in a hurry when he handed me the keys to the beast and said follow me! Shahid lives in an apartment with the cars being kept on the 6th floor of a

Is there a better speed than 911 kmph?

parking garage so we headed out to find a location to photograph the beauties.

We find a little desert area not yet built on and get out of the cars to arrange them for the shoot. Its 45 degrees and after arriving from Melbourne’s winter I’m really feeling the heat, so we work quickly to get the shots.

The RS has aircon which was set at 17.5 (the minimum) but as a 993 owner I know that Shahid must be feeling it as aircon was never a strong point in any air cooled model. Besides being VP Shahid also organises all the Club’s drive events thought the mountains and deserts of the seven Emirates.

The amazing veiw (from our Jameira Beach Hotel room) of the 7 star Burj Al Arab. It cost 7.8 Billion to build and is the worlds third tallest hotel; needless to say, no thongs allowed!

A Corporate Banker originally from Pakistan he joined the UAE Porsche club 16 years ago shortly after purchasing his first Porsche; a 1996 993 C2 manual in Aventura Green. It was previously owned by an Emirates Airline Captain and only had 17,000 km on the clock. Sharid joined the committee soon after joining the club and became Treasurer before becoming Vice President in 2005.

Below: Porsche Driving Experience L; Yas Marina F1 Circuit Abu Dhabi

Below: Road Tour to Al Aqqa 18 Sept 2015

The 993 was used a competition car with upgrades including: the suspension, club sport wheels, exhaust, air filter, chip and adding a pair of Sparco race seats. He kept the car for eight years in parallel ownership of a Cayenne before purchasing a 997 GT3 RS in orange he referred to as the “Tangerine Dream”. His Current cars are a similar theme; this time a classic 993 C4S in midnight blue and a current 991 GT3 RS in Lava Orange. Like the first 993, the C4S (American spec) purchased 3 years ago is a late 1997 manual Varioram model. This time in midnight blue with tan interior. Sharid loves the 993 and says this one is a keeper! The 991 GT3 RS was purchased brand new. It looks stunning in Lava orange, but as Sharid arrived at the hotel to pick me up I noticed the paint looked matt and he confirmed that it was a wrap. It is a perfect match to the original colour except for the matt finish. If you are going to do high speed touring in this country a full wrap is a cost saving alternative to respraying the car after a few years and keeps its value through originality. So what’s in store for Shahid’s Garage in the future? He would like a Cayman GT4, 997 GT2 or a 997 GT3 4.0 if money was no object. He also adds that if the series 2 991 GT3 RS came out in a manual he would swap the current one in a heartbeat.

Below: Porsche Driving Experience XLVIII; Yas Marina Circuit Abu Dhabi

The local Porsche dealership is the largest single dealer in the world selling over 2000 cars a year with three floors of showrooms and over 60 cars on display at any one time. With its own Porsche Classic service section Sharid and Karim get all their cars serviced there. The Porsche Club of UAE was formed in 1998 and has 2000 active members. With a population of 9.5 million (UAE’s total population of which 1.4 million are Emirati citizens and 7.8 million are expatriates) it puts its the club membership on par per head of population with the PCV! Thanks again Shahid for letting me drive your GT3 RS, I had a ball!

PCA declares Australian Porsche Festival a complete success. The second running of the Porsche Rennsport Australia Motor Racing Festival in late April was a complete success with Porsche enthusiasts from around the country, across the Tasman as well as from Europe and North America descending into Sydney Motorsport Park. Naturally, the cars were the stars, both on and off the track. More than 200 Porsches took to the circuit for either competition or demonstration, highlighted by the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Pro-Am endurance races and very fast laps from two historic Le-Mans winning Porsches. Dozens of priceless racing and road going Porsches of Australian significance lined up in the Porschestrasse with a further 100 on official display, from a rare and immaculate 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster to a fully-restored single cylinder bright red Porsche tractor.

22

PORSCHE

PARADE

The human face of the Festival was selfproclaimed ‘urban outlaw’ and Porsche cult figure Magnus Walker, who flew in from Los Angeles to participate in the second running of Rennsport Australia after hearing about the inaugural down under Porsche event of 2013. “This is my first time in Australia and I’m not going to forget it in a hurry,” said Walker. “You guys are real Porsche enthusiasts down here. You love your Porsche racing and Porsche road cars and I’ve been really impressed with the quality of what I’ve seen here. Everything from air-cooled to water-cooled, front-engine to mid-engine to rear-engine, from original to decked out … you guys have got all the Porsche bases covered with some outstanding and really cool cars.” Many of the 5,000 participants over the two days formed long queues for autographs and photos with the bearded Porsche hero, who was happy

to give all his time talking with and acknowledging his fans. The second running of the Porsche Rennsport Australia Motor Racing Festival bettered the first in all ways – more Porsches on track, more Porsches on display, more Porsche activities and more Porsche fans attending. “The Porsche Rennsport concept is a great one and we have shown again that it works, especially in an ‘enthusiasts’ market like Australia where the Porsche passion runs deep,” said Porsche Cars Australia (PCA) Managing Director and CEO, Sam Curtis. “Porsche is a special brand in so far that its appeal extends through the ages. Whether it is modern or historic race cars, road cars from the early air-cooled era, new and fast Porsches like the GT3 RS or gorgeous open top cars like the original 356 Cabriolet, there is always a Porsche to admire.”

Felstead who drove all the way down and ran for 20 minutes before overheating, he came in allowed his car to cool down before going back out but immediately experienced the same issue and sadly was a retirement. I am sure, despite this, David will be back and we hope with some fellow NSW PC members next year. The Anzac medal needs to go to our Vice President and Competition Director Tony Carolan who turned up to the event less than a week after major surgery from a cycling accident and still trying to work out how he could engineer some track time. On Winners there were 29 winning teams when it comes to value for money and overall motorsport entertainment, however on the podium we must recognise the top three teams that all ran very professional outfits with the top spot going to Ski Racing – Weltmeister team of Bob Hawker, Ben Faggetter, Phil Treloar and Melanie Treloar with a massive +173 laps, in second place the flat six team not far behind on +169 laps and in third place another PCV team of Four Play with +157 laps, the best non PCV team was MLC racing who should receive congratulations on achieving +133 laps with 2 Toyota Corolla’s a Datsun 1200 and a 1964 Alfa Giulia Super. I am hooked and will certainly be encouraging all PCV members to have a go at this event. Talking to some Triumph team members over the social drink at the end, they summed it up brilliantly “This is the best run event on their race calendar and the PCV really set the benchmark in organisation, safety and social standards”. I can’t wait for next year and certainly will improve our teams result. There is only one way for us and that is up.

I only service cars for my friends... It doesn’t always start that way, but that’s how it ends up. We both own Porsches, we have shared values and interests. They’re skilled and committed to their careers, same here. When I started as an apprentice at Hamiltons over 15 years ago, it was bred into the Service Team to always go the extra mile, always strive for excellence. I call it the “Hamiltons Touch”, and it’s part of my DNA. My friends deal directly with me, I do the work, I answer their questions, I sort problems. They get the Hamiltons Touch without the price. … and I’m always looking for new friends. “the car ran beautifully...the whole car was feeling more refined… A very good outcome and satisfied customer.” Stephen Marshall “my wife is very happy with her Boxster’s performance and says it even sounds better... your follow up call was also greatly appreciated.” John Mitsy

Go Kart Challenge

Thursday 19th May 2016

This year the Go-Kart Challenge was held on Thursday 19th May at Ace Karts in Albion. It was nice to see some new faces, our diehard regulars and a female presence not to be reckoned with! Certainly the ever popular Go-Kart Challenge has had a fresh makeover with a change of venue. This dynamic track and facility was embraced by attendees. The larger, longer, faster track with more powerful Karts along with the night light ambience made the experience more dramatic. The consistent flow of Karts and wider track made for less stopping during the race. Michelle from Ace Karts took us through a safety briefing and then put us into groups. I would like to thank Michelle and the team at Ace Karts for a flawless event. As the preparations were taking place the pizzas arrived to an eating area overlooking the track.

The racers were very competitive with the best lap times of the evening going to Tim Brown – 39.232, Ross Del Gallo – 39.311 and Margaret Russell-Borg – 39.521. Margaret propelled her team ‘Whiplash into 3rd place. ‘MMM’ team came in second and first place went to ‘Mario Kart’. The fastest individual lap of the evening was awarded to Tim Brown setting up the challenge for next year.

Remember to book early next year to secure your place as numbers are limited with this popular event.

Thank you to all the participants who made it a pleasurable and memorable exciting event. Thank you also to Carly, Lisa and Ross for helping with the organisation and Ace Karts for making this one the best events!

The event opened with the first of two groups out to qualify for the first race session. The drivers were chasing the fastest possible time as this inaugural race had no previous record to aspire to. This would set up a new challenge time to beat next year.

South Australian Good Food and Wine Tour

The Tour was designed with two day stops in three areas of S.A. - the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the Limestone Coast thus allowing participants the opportunity to explore different regions, enjoy their beautiful cars, partake of fine food and wine, all in a relaxed manner. DAY 1 by Neil Drew Rockbank Tourmaster Alf was on the job early to meet the group at Rockbank BP roadhouse. Surprise, surprise, everyone was on time. After checking off names etc, a quick briefing was given and the aim was to meet at Ararat for a “pit stop”. There was a optional stop for lunch in Bordertown and then onto to Murray Bridge for a suggested refuel stop. From Murray Bridge, the group set off for the Novotel Barossa Valley resort on a lovely rural road which went via Mouint Pleasant and Williamstown, then to the Novotel Resort. Drinks were served in the bar at 6:30 before being 30

shown to our smorgasbord dinner. Phyl and I missed out on the pre - dinner drinks and almost missed dinner due to the fact that we had a very long day and just rested our heads on the pillow just for a few minutes?? This turned out to be one hour and a half later We were very lucky to get any dinner at all. We were greeted by a lot of inferences and clapping. Not true. Everyone was in high spirits and looking forward to a wonderful week ahead. DAY 2 by Peter Struck and Alison Spink THE LONGEST DAY

was unstructured, allowing us to discover the region’s many attractions in small groups or on our own. For many that meant a drive to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood. Neil and Phyl lead a group of Porsches down through Williamstown past a huge motorcycle gathering at the local oval. Those that joined the leisurely drive included ‘Turbo’ Tony, his tour sidekick Stephen, Wayne and Lindsay, Clyde and Alison, Peter and Alison, John and Kelly, Robert, Godfrey, Jim and Mandy. For those of us who hadn’t seen it before it was quite a revelation - a place to easily spend 2-3 hours discovering more about our Australian motoring history and the true characters who

Not long after winding our clocks back to South Australian time we faced Day 2 with clocks wound back another hour, making our second day a very long but very rewarding one. Ray Baty arranged the first of his many enjoyable early morning walks and a keen group of 21 set out on a short, leisurely walk around the outskirts of our resort and adjoining golf course. It proved a great way to meet PCV members who were previously little known to us. From there the day

Novotel at Barossa

helped shape it. There were plenty of insights and highlights amongst a parade of interesting vehicles covering a vast range of eras. The museum even featured a ‘barn find’ display which echoed the faithfulness of the general display. Day 2 was a perfect day for familiarising ourselves with this iconic Australian wine growing region. Groups headed off in various directions to wineries, galleries, museums, restaurants, scenic lookouts and charming local townships like Angastan. Another group of six tried their luck at the golf course adjoining our Novotel resort. According to Jim, the best that could be said

Walking group Day 2

for the golf was that no balls were lost! Murray was miserable. Retail therapy got the first of many good workouts and we found ourselves constantly meeting others in our larger group throughout the day as we crisscrossed the region, sharing wine tasting notes or just a simple wave as we crossed paths along the network of country roads. Our lunch choice was Artisans of Barossa where boutique wineries without cellar door service were well represented. This place was really jumping, with a huge patronage from locals and Adelaide day trippers. Fred and Monika headed to Adelaide in their striking Boxster Spyder and caught up with old friends. So too, Nick and Tracie who tootled off to Adelaide in their Boxster. Sharon drove Murray’s 968 for the first time, enjoying 3 hours of shopping in the process. It might explain why Murray’s golf game was off - he may have been worrying about more than just his own driving. Around 5pm many headed pool side for social drinks before heading out to dinner in Tanunda. Four groups headed to the trendy restaurant

‘1918’ for some delectable local produce, others enjoyed the hospitality at one of the many local hotels, whilst room service was another favoured option for many weary travellers after a very, very long day indeed in the beautiful Barossa Valley. DAY 3 by Alf Carrigan Another magnificent day at leisure in the Barossa, armed with tour guides from Tourism SA many choose the vineyards trail and other places of interest. The number one” hot spot” was Maggie Beer`s Farm where many of us enjoyed lunch at their restaurant, sampled the produce and made many purchases such as Salted Brandy Caramel, wonderful over ice cream and Ginger Chilli Sauce, great with Steak. That evening was the first of our keynote dinners. At 6 pm our Chariot (local bus) arrived at the Novotel to transport us to the Seppeltsfield Winery where dinner was held in their grand old dining hall.

ISSUE 2, 2016

Pre - Dinner drinks and magnificent Horsd`oeuvres were followed by an excellent three course plus copious quantities of their select wine. Thank goodness for the return bus trip as ”Mister Plod” may have had added to the finances of SA.

DAY 5 by Lindsay St Baker Victor Harbour

DAY 4 by Neville Sampson Tuesday 5th April was to be a day of driving. We enjoyed our last breakfast at Novotel Barossa Valley and joined Alf Carrigan and Wayne St Baker for a briefing. We listened intently, and checked the instructions detailing our route to Hahndorf for the lunch, but the best summary of the morning was- “All roads lead to Hahndorf”.

During the morning we started as one group driving the fabulous roads through the Adelaide Hills. The group soon spread out as the leading drivers tested the handling of their vehicles and proceeded through Williamstown and Kersbrook. Some drivers missed turns and headed on a variety of roads, arriving at Hahndorf at different times and from different directions. Your correspondent took a wrong turn near the Chain of Ponds, heading towards Adelaide, and returned via the South Eastern Freeway, with a highlight being the sound of the aircooled flat six bouncing off the walls of the engineering feat known as the Crafer tunnel. As one of our group noted, it was the only flat six through the Crafer tunnel! Hahndorf is a popular tourist town which is regarded as the oldest German settlement in Australia. The German influence is very apparent in Hahndorf and is seen physically in the traditional fachwerk architecture of the original surviving buildings. There are also many restaurants in the town serving German cuisine. Our vehicles certainly looked at home.

Our group enjoyed a leisurely lunch break and explored the shopping opportunities. One member preferred not to take all of her purchases back in the Cayenne, but to send some back in another member’s less spacious vehicle to avoid disclosing all her purchases to her husband! At the end of lunch another briefing took place. Wayne and Lindsay St Baker had kindly planned a route heading down the west coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula for the afternoon. A popular proposal, with 23 cars taking that option. Alf 32

Carrigan left nothing to chance in keeping this large group together. Wayne & Lindsay St Baker led the group, with Alf & Gay Carrigan and Neil & Phyl Drew travelling behind any stragglers. Radio contact was good, but were such sterling efforts sufficient to keep our group together? In a word, no. Still some took wrong turns, with some heading directly to Victor Harbor, but others returning to our group along the route.

We woke up to a wet and cold morning in Victoria Harbour and after a good breakfast at the Country Club, we decided to drive down to the harbour for a walk. Unfortunately, the wind was so fierce that, after taking a few photos, we decided to join some members for a cup of coffee. The coffee shop was between a couple shops that attracted the ladies interest and leaded to some shopping therapy.

By 10.30 the sun was shining again and Wayne and I decided to drive back to the lookout we had passed on the way to Victor Harbour the day before to take some more photos of the coastal town and we then made our way to McLaren Vale for lunch. Wayne and Lindsay’s suggested route down the west coast was excellent, with open roads and sweeping bends. We had a break at the carpark on Aldinga beach, and from there travelled at times directly along the coast, and then swung inland through Delamere with a spirited run to Victor Harbor.

The McCracken Country Club provided us with fine accommodation, and great views over the golf course for many. Rain descended upon us, requiring Ray’s beautiful Speedster and Fred’s Boxster Spyder to be wrapped in plastic for the night to keep dry in the conditions. The rain also meant that our barbeque for the evening was moved to an indoor room. At the end of our driving day we enjoyed a very good meal, and Alf thanked Lindsay St Baker for her work in planning the scenic route for the afternoon.

We did not take the direct route as it might have been a little boring but I managed as always to find some great roads that gave Wayne a little bit of a driving challenge. We arrived at the winery with plenty of time and met the rest of the gang: some had taken the direct route, some had decided to do yesterday’s Fleurieux Peninsula run in the opposite direction, some for the first time, some for the second time. You see, I had stood up and complained the previous night before dinner that some of the run participants had the audacity of escaping from the run without my authorisation to take a quick shortcut to Victor Harbour, this was showing a complete lack of disciple on their part, but I digress…d’Arenberg Winery, McLaren Vale, is the home of the renowned d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant and, after some wine tasting, its Head Chef: Peter Reschke and Staff put on an amazing degustation lunch that was called “La Grande Bouffe du Sud” (The big pig out of the South). Actually it turned out that this appellation did not reflect the distinction and subtlety in taste and the exquisite and original presentation of 9 courses bearing exotic names of bocadillos, canapés, lanyap. No need to say, we would not need dinner tonight. While waiting for dessert, we were grateful to meet d’Arry Osborn (now in his nineties) who his Staff had teared away from his afternoon TV show to meet us and some of our Porsches to

take some pictures on his beautiful lawn. Giving us a brief family history, he explained that the winery was built in 1927, the year of his birth and that when in 1959 he launched his first wine label he called it in honour of Helena d’Arenberg, his mother who had died giving birth to him. After a dessert of passion fruit soufflé or chocolate pudding we enjoyed a cup of coffee with petit(s) fours, we returned to Victor Harbour and once again, some by a direct route and others who decided to follow us by an alternative great driving route that took us to Goolwa where we went across the infamous Hindmarsh Island bridge, a quick U turn, a comfort stop along the estuary and then arriving back at Victor Harbour to fill up our cars ready for the next morning. As very few of us wanted a night meal, we decided to have a glass of wine on the terrace and enjoy some cheeses and biscuits and were soon joined by more participants and kept widening our circle. As the sun had gone down and it was getting quite cool we decided to retire for the night, it had been a very big day, it had been a fabulous day! DAY 6 by Alvaro and Maria Del Gallo We woke early to a cool clear morning in Victor Harbour on day 6 of the South Australian Grand Food and Wine Tour. So far this trip has been just that – grand, the food, wine and fellow members have all been wonderful!

The usual crew were out for Rays’ early morning walk, which included the ‘grunter hill climb’ today. We all had to be back for breakfast and then pack up for the drive to Mt. Gambier where we would be staying for two nights at The Barn.

another beautiful dinner in The Oak Tree Room at The Barn. Tonight was an extra special occasion as it was Charles birthday today! Everyone was in good spirits enjoying the delicious dinner followed by Charles’ birthday cake. We all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Charles and thanked him for celebrating his ‘special’ birthday with his ‘Porsche Club Family’. It was also a night for everyone to say thanks to Alf for another expertly organised tour with a bit of help from the St. Bakers, Drews and Randles. DAY 7 by Garry and Lois Saber Well Day 7 has arrived, last day of what has been another awesome Alf tour. As this was a free day with no organised activities it was noticeable that the breakfast attendance was very casual with most arriving close to finish time, not like previous mornings when everybody was up and at it!! Alf started the morning with the announcement that he had lost his pants, turns out it wasn’t any more exciting than he had left a pair of shorts behind at the previous Motel. So much for a bit of scandal. Garry and I decided to spend the morning wandering around the Mt Gambier shopping precinct, every time we turned a corner we spotted a Porsche cruising through or a Porsche owner window shopping. We also bumped into Sharon Pivac in a nice little Coffee shop, she had been dropped off in town by hubby Murray who was trying to improve his Golf Handicap. I thing Sharon was preparing to improve her shopping handicap, dangerous move Murray. Whilst I headed off to a local hairdresser Garry took the car to the Car Wash, it was here that “Turbo” Tony was spotted checking out the behind the scenes machinery, maybe planning to expand the Car Wash business. And then Garry discovered another screw imbedded into one of our near new tyres, 2nd in 3 weeks. Lucky for us the local Beaurepaires was able to fix it straight away and Garry was mobile again in time to pick me up before I could get into some serious shopping, lucky for him!! After getting some tourist tips from a local we decided to head out to Penola which was only a 30 minute drive away. Penola turned out to be a lovely little town where we were able to explore the shops and some of the original town cottages. There were also a number of other Porsche’s cruising the area. Our dinner at that night at The Barn Restaurant was a great finale to a wonderful trip. Alf was thanked heartily by the group for all his efforts in organising the tour. Well that’s it folks, can’t wait for the next one.

Now, packing the Porsches can be quite challenging for some when we leave a destination. What with trying to fit everything in plus the extra items that we very much ‘needed’ to purchase along the way. This particular morning ‘Blondie’ was waiting patiently with her bags at what she thought was her ‘white Porsche’. We had a few ‘white Porsches’ on the trip so that could be an honest mistake. Luckily our Grand Tour Meister was right on it though calling out,”hey Blondie over here!” promptly summoning her to the correct car! That evening we had the usual pre-dinner drinks and catch up of the day’s drive followed by

DAY 8 by Alf Carrigan After a hearty breakfast we departed on our separate ways home Special note of thanks to Carly & Lisa, Neil and Phyl Drew, Roger and Cheryl Randle, Wayne and Lindsay St Baker for their assistance & to our morning walking group co-ordinator Ray Baty plus all those who have contributed to this tour article with written and photographic input. Feedback thru the club website questionnaire records the tour rating as “Excellent”. ISSUE 2, 2016

Haunted Hills Story: Kees van Ek Photos: Ron Widdison

After last years “freeze out” event we were greeted by brilliant race conditions being a very mild 22 degrees and a wind still day with the occasional sun shine. A perfect day and contrast to last year. However, one cannot but wonder if the events of last year had a lasting affect as the day only attracted 32 entries. But, to bring this event forward to the warmer weather, it had plenty of competition from school holiday commitments and other sporting events. Those that did turn up though were greeted with a perfect day and some excellent competition amongst all classes. As per usual, we started with the “short circuit” segment so everyone could get their “eye in” and get used to the run being all over in less than a minute. This was followed by the “figure of Eight” and finally the “Long Circuit”. Another side effect of the perfect racing conditions was that the competition was very close all day, especially Class A, B and C. In Class A, Phil Treloar was having a great tussle with Jamie Lovett, who by the way, is Phil’s daughter, Melanie’s boyfriend. In the end it was Jamie who won the day. Not really sure whether this is a good or bad way to try and impress your partners father? Either way, it made for great entertainment. Less than a second separated Bill Sevastas and Daniel Reynolds in Class B with an even closer Class C between Simon Dunn and Pete Matherson only separated by 0.24 of a second after a days racing. It was also really good to see the new “Cup Class” entrant of Tom Marks, Tom being a new competitor but with this effort I am sure we will see a lot more of him. Tom showed very good pace and it was a pity that he was the only entrant in that class. He did however prove that these cars can be super competitive at Haunted Hills even though it is an extremely tight and short track. In the revised Open Class, who also tend to struggle around this tight little track, Nick, Joseph and Tom all showed what can be done in this type of “semi” cup car.

36

PORSCHE PARADE

It was also very noticeable that Fitzie had a training day at Haunted Hills the Friday before. Those that attended that day showed extremely good times in their respected classes proving that despite the short and tight track, the old saying of “practice makes perfect” is still very true. It was good to see that Greg Bardsley overcame his mishap at last years practice day with Fitzie and posted some much improved times beating some of the newer cars. Lets hope Fitzie does more of this and gets good attendance to these practice days as Haunted Hills once again proved this a worthwhile exercise. Congratulations must go to Bob Hawker in his 996 GT3 who finished the day with the best overall time of 149.110 seconds. Overall it was a very successful day and everyone really enjoyed themselves even though they probably only had a total of 12 minutes of adrenalin charged track time for the entire day. It is amazing how acute and intense the effort is to drive these short circuits and how satisfying the adrenalin rush is when one is completed. If you haven’t been here, make sure you come next time as it is well worth it. Very unique. On a side note, one of Fitzies regulars celebrated his sixtiest something birthday on the day, raising the question whether or not there should be a “pensioners or oldies” class for them as they seem to slow down with age or could it be that they tend to be there for the enjoyment of still competing at that stage in life. Either way, what a brilliant day to spend a birthday with the comradery and friendly competition that the Porsche Club provides for all to enjoy.

Autumn Run

ISSUE 2, 2016

On Sunday morning the 17th April, all Porsche enthusiasts gathered to meet in Rowville for the first autumn run of 2016. Not even the cool morning could dampen our enthusiasm. But much to our delight, the sun quickly broke through the grey clouds and brought forth warm brilliant sunshine and clear azure skies. Hurrah! We welcomed new members Alan Jenkins who drove his black Carrera S 997 Series 2 2008 Porsche and Phillip Tulley who drove his green GT3 997 2007. Run organisers Ken Anson and Alex Harmati handed out the run notes and explained the route to us with the timetable for the day. And we were off! We eagerly started our journey through Emerald and its lush green ferns and trees. There were some great stretches of road as well as twists and turns on some bends. Everyone was thrilled with these bends as we all admired the handling of our great cars! We continued to take great delight in the bends of the roads with some well controlled and precise driving. Morning tea was at the Gembrook Rural Fire Brigade CFA. They put on an amazing morning tea with a myriad of delicious food! We had a mouth-watering morning tea sprinkled with laughter and chatting and a donation to this worthy and hard-working CFA.

44

PORSCHE PARADE

The next part of our drive was a beautiful scenic run through the countryside with peaceful green fields. We drove on a great stretch of Main Road towards Hoddles Creek and then on through the beautiful surroundings of Healesville. There was also the gorgeous sight of magnificent autumn coloured leaves as we whizzed by in our Porsches. Alex had organized lunch at the Vine’s Restaurant at the Helen’s Hill Estate Winery in Coldstream. Pre-lunch drinks whilst basking in the warm autumn sunshine on the manicured lawns of the restaurant overlooking the picturesque scenery was, what’s the word…breathtaking! And then just when we thought we couldn’t possibly eat anymore, we did! The restaurant boasts 180 degrees of beautiful views across the Yarra Valley and we could not have asked for a better venue to relax over lunch. And again the food and wines were mouthwateringly delicious. Felix Rieniets, the amazing photographer and deputy social director, asked some of the club members to display their Porsches on the lawn for a photo shoot. There were four classic Porsches: a 1974 white 911 Carrera 2.7, a 1976 platinum metallic 911 Carrera 3.0, a 1996 arena red 993 Carrera S and a charcoal 997 Carrera S. Felix is an outstanding photographer,

whose passion for his field comes across in his wonderful and creative photos. It was then time for the raffle with the following winners: Michael Dennis (previous social director), Roger Holding (previous treasurer), Sonja (Harriet) Anson (wife of Ken Anson), Margaret Bath, Paul Tulley and Christopher Stevenson. Interesting winners… To put it another way, perhaps we should all join the Porsche Club committee? After lunch we were introduced to Allan Nalder who is the owner of Helen’s Hill Estate Winery as well as The Vines Restaurant. He briefly explained the history of the place. It is named after Helen, wife of John Fraser and they were the original owners from the 1950’s. Allan’s father bought it in 2002 with the restaurant opening in 2004 and the cellar door in 2006. It is set on 158 acres of beautiful green fields and the ethos of this winery is Allan grows all the fruit for their wines on the vineyard itself. A special and big thank you to Ken for organizing such a scenic and exciting route for the day, and Alex for organising the venue. It was an absolutely marvellous day full of beloved Porsches, great lively ‘catch ups’ and conversations, delicious food and wine amongst old and new Porsche Club friends! Until next time…

Winton Sprints Story: David Mallinson Photos: Tristan De Carro

The Day looked bleak early on and the weather map indicated a high probability of rain but the Gods smiled on us and the day whilst cool and mostly overcast remained dry and we were able to enjoy 4 sessions on the long track and another 4 on the short track. We got underway with a briefing from our President Andrew Bonwick with our Competition Director Tony Carolan on a hardship trip to Le Mans. The day saw 65 competitors with 6 of those competitors sharing cars so a total of 62 cars, the Porsche club had 3 groups plus entrée and we also hosted 11 non Porsche cars being 2 BMW’s, 1 mini and 8 Subaru’s. We had 7 divers running in Entrée and the other 47 PCV competitors split over 3 groups, which created some challenges over the shorter course requiring drivers to constantly use their mirrors. Luckily we had no major accidents although a few people visited the kitty litter and grass fringes with the new tarmac proving to be a little slippery despite the dry conditions. Our hard felt condolences goes out to Tom Goulopoulos in his 996 GT3 who broke a steering arm after touching one of the ripple strips and to Bryan Fitt whose 993 Turbo caught on fire after what looks like an oil hose giving way.

46

PORSCHE PARADE

I was behind Bryan when this occurred and witnessed the timely actions of both Bryan and the emergency services which certainly averted a more major incident. This was my first time to Winton and certainly worth the slightly longer drive and took the advice of the more seasoned drivers arriving the night before and enjoying a hearty breakfast at the bakery before heading to the track. The track itself was challenging with the different track formats providing further challenge as it takes some time to find the right rhythm, anyway that’s my excuse. On the overall results Cup cars filled seven of the first eight places with Rick Mensa taking honours by some margin and this was the first time I had run in group one and it was amazing how quick these cars are both in braking and acceleration with their light weight, big brakes and sequential gearboxes. Special mention also to Bob Hawker who was the one non-cup car to finish in the top eight, Sally Anne Hains who finished ninth and the highest placed female competitor and Ben Faggetter in tenth in his 993 which is a testament to how great the last of the air cooled Carrera’s really are (and no doubt Ben’s skills as both as a driver and an engineer). Look forward to seeing you all at Sandown on the 10th of July.

If variety is the very spice of life, then the PCV event held at DECA, in Shepparton, provides a different challenge to that experienced at most of the venues we visit during the year. The late braking, high speed white knuckled turns are replaced by a more subtle choreographed dance by driver and machine. This holds true, at least, on the skidpan layout where the “Dolly Parton” and the “Valet Parking” are performed. For some of the 26 competitors, tackling the skidpan and back track proved a lot easier than actually getting to the venue. Successfully negotiating the local constabulary and the many changing speed zones around Shepparton required complete concentration, gentle control inputs and scanning well ahead. For at least one member the negotiation occurred after the infringement. The driver’s briefing saw the competitors broken into 2 groups for the morning session with group 1 consisting of Class A-D cars plus others and group 2 comprising

52

PORSCHE PARADE

everyone else. This year the back track was to be run in a clockwise direction and group 1 headed there first whilst group 2 prepared to tackle the skidpan. The first session on the skidpan was conducted in such an orderly, well organised manner that it was over almost before it had begun. I had thought that the new scoring system of best time rather than average time would lead to more witches hats being re-located as competitors tried a more adventurous approach, but on the whole this wasn’t the case. Mike Herrod, however, found the layout a bit too easy and decided another perfectly executed 360° turn was needed. The afternoon session on the skidpan brought the whole field together and provided an opportunity for friends and competitors to seek out a match race. The timing remained individual but it is great to watch cars competing on the side by side, duplicate circuits. This is where a 944S can beat

a Cup Car, the same specification cars can highlight driver ability and where I was completely outclassed by Bob Hawker. One match race I witnessed was so close that I think it must have been a dead heat. Both cars had taken off towards the first marker as soon as the flag had dropped. They arrived at the same time and completed their turns at the same time. All around the course there was nothing in it. Both cars arrived in the intermediate garage, paused and......two raised flags indicated neither had come to a complete stop. Great fun, but add 5 seconds boys! Running the back track in a clockwise direction seemed to be a popular decision. The course flowed really well and felt a lot safer. I am sure Andrew Bonwick was a lot happier sitting at his timing table with cars arriving in the final garage in a fairly controlled way instead of all locked up. It was a fun day.

Run to Lindenderry at Red Hill Torque Tube Register Sunday 3rd April

Autumn is supposed to be cold and blowy, well the leaves falling off the trees knew it, but a wonderfully warm Sunday for the Torque tube lunch run was well received with 16 Porsches gathered at North Rd reserve for a coffee and de-brief of the run ahead. The new map format of green turn arrows and instructions for each juncture made sure that no one got lost as is the quirk with all Torque tube runs in the past. We followed the coastal road up to Mt Eliza where we peeled off to take the scenic route around the back of Tuerong and beyond for a challenging blast through some twists and long straights. We then did a quick freeway flash to come onto Arthur’s Seat Road to tackle the escalating twists whilst taking in the dignified vista of Port Phillip Bay. Candidly, this was the plan, however the City of Mornington Peninsula had important burn off activities in progress and our well mapped out run needed off the cuff, fly by the seat of your pants adjustments to ensure our fellow Torque Tubers enjoyed the rest of the drive and ensured we were not late for our lunch appointment. The road closures caused half the group to break off along the back of Arthur Seat Road due to burn activities, so we quickly detoured the long way to the back of

54

PORSCHE

Arthur’s Seat Road however thankfully everyone met at the top of the mountain for the short run down to Lindenderry at Red Hill. Upon arrival at Lindenderry Estate, we promptly parked our cars in a picture perfect arrangement set amongst tall conifer pines and sloping vine covered hills. The winery kindly allowed us to group all vehicles together. It was decided we would display a vehicle for the day and a special 928s4 driven by our co-captain of the Torque Tube register was chosen and allowed prime position on the elevated grassed area in front of the restaurant. Positioned like a shark stalking its prey, it was the eyes of the visitors and onlookers that feasted on the gentle lines and visual design aesthetics of the 928. It was a tribute to all things TorqueTube. In a cosy little shed adjacent to the main restaurant area, we tasted some excellent wine. The sommelier provided a knowledgeable explanation of the various varietals the estate produces. The wines were earthy and dense yet elegant. Some of us less interested in the characteristics of wine nevertheless enjoyed the tastings with vigour staggering over to the lunch venue to relax for the afternoon.

With Lunch underway in the main dining area, our members were entertained with a story or two from Captains Angelo Monteleone and Ivan Romanic. After hearing that members Tony and Elisa Federico gave up their Wedding anniversary to be on the Torque Tub Run and we promptly congratulated them with a bottle of Lindenderry Estate wine. Thanks also to new attendees Maurice and Jenny, and to all our dedicated Torque Tube members for attending another successful run. See you again in August.

Run to Inverloch 993 Register Sunday 29th May

is black! My eyes scan the number plates. Our plates are a similar pattern and for a second it seems my black Boxster has morphed into a black RS. No such luck, though she sees the humorous side as only a gal sliding into her 1 of 1,014 993 RSs can.

Sunday morning. Maccas. Bit chilly. Carpark well populated with Porsche - mostly of the 993 variety. Yep, 993 Register run, this one to the beautiful seaside township of Inverloch via Longway of course. Eleven examples and various variations of the venerable air-cooled beast parked side by side pointing outwards waiting for launch instructions from their happy owners. Five non 993s - 2 x Boxster, a Cayman and 2 x 911 (one being Bernard’s classic ’74 911s which is of course part of the air-cooled family) were welcomed in to play too. As a new member of the club on my second run, to find this inclusiveness is very pleasing. So, first things first. Coffee. Then the meet and greet. Thankfully for me most are wearing name tags! A few minutes chit-chat and Leon gathers us in the courtyard for the pre take-off briefing. Roll call. Peter Day? Anyone heard from Peter? No takers. General agreement he’ll turn up any moment. A set of magnificently prepared running notes are issued. Whoever prepares these should sign them as for any notable work of art. Now the hard word. Says Leon “Last thing is we aren’t going until someone volunteers to do a write up. Any takers?” Much shuffling of feet and downcast eyes. Where’s Vickie?? No Vickie today. My voice responds to The Leon Ultimatum – “I’ll give it a go”. A nanosecond later my brain catches up and mild panic along with a couple of muscle contractions set in. Too late. Jane quickly picks up on a literary train-wreck in the making and offers to help out if needs be. Done deal! Leon’s happy so off to our cars. Jane and myself are running solo so I suggest we stay together as this worked sort of ok on the previous run. “What colour’s the RS?” “Black.” Yep half the field

All 16 out of Maccas safely and heading east up Wellington and who shows up. Peter’s Porsche radar has kicked in and he slots his C2 coupe into the pack as inconspicuously as one can in Speed Yellow. Later he owns up to having gone to the Rowville Maccas! To make him feel better we all apologised to him for us getting the meet point wrong. Nice Sunday morning cruise to the midway break at Drouin Maccas. Bit of distress from some at the wait for the facilities. Needless to say no coffees were consumed! On to Inverloch. The chronology is a bit lost to me but we did have a few events of note along the way. An encounter with some wildlife. A stray dog and a horse with rider just around a blind corner which brought the pack back to about 10 k pretty quickly. The horse rider was rather un-impressed. Imagine coming across cars on a public road! Just shock value thankfully and all parties on their way. Then according to Jane’s notes “After the huge dairy tractor we finally passed the temporary citizen riding a camouflaged push bike wearing black clothing on a narrow, winding 100 kmh corner”. I don’t recall either which probably should concern me. Overall we had a great run –only one X-Trail encountered and an Outback more interested in the view than driving the ‘mini Great Ocean Road’ coming in to Inverloch. Priorities please! The writer witnessed a certain RS with daylight between road and rear left at one point after which it took off to play with Tony’s 993 Turbo. Reliably informed there was a bit more airtime had by this pair.

Contis. Then there was a puff of white smoke out the back. Not good. Then more under acceleration. A lot more. Think blown engine more. On a long clear stretch of broken white lines I move beside him into the right lane. “It’s coming from the engine not the exhaust” I yell. Peter nods and continues on. At Inverloch 50 ks later he says it had happened before. Something about oil leaking from somewhere on to some hot bits. Sorry but you won’t get highly technical mechanical descriptions from me. Coming in to Wonthaggi the sun was out so I’m thinking top down time. Kane in his Boxster had already been enjoying the open air for a while. Pull over and drop it losing four track, I mean road positions. Pull out behind Peter and Delwyn in the C2 Coupe. Love that Speed Yellow. The Manna Gum restaurant at the Broadbeach Resort was the lunch venue. Travelling in disguise as the “Porche Club” (according to the menu) we enjoyed a hearty meal in very pleasant surroundings. Lunch all done and it was back to the cars. We gravitate to the RS. Many grins of satisfaction as we listen to it growl to 5000 RPM and back. Very nice. Jon made the day for two youngsters wanting their photo taken with his 993. Post lunch the local historical society hosted a visit to the Inverloch Rocket Shed, a historical piece of maritime safety infrastructure. An interesting side trip. In all another very well organised and safely run day out with a great bunch in some of the finest machinery on the planet. Looking forward to the next.

That put me behind Peter’s 993 s and no complaint there. What an awesome profile that model has and it was a pleasure watching it through the corners. Got a little close at one point and got a spray of gravel from the massive ISSUE 2, 2016

Run to the Clarkefield Hotel Modern 911 Register Sunday 29th May

I do like a run that begins at Mulgrave as I don’t have to wake too early on a Sunday morning. A glorious start to the day – bit of a snooze, wake up Dietfried, give him a quick clean, ready myself for the most enjoyable day that lies ahead. Jump into the fine vehicle that is Dietfried, smell the leather and petrol and all is right in my world. 26 Club Members converged on McDonald’s for The Clarkefield run. In a brief moment I thought I had got the date incorrect as I couldn’t see any Porsches in the car park but after turning a corner, 15 marvellous machines presented themselves to me like a regal ceremony. I felt like a renegade as this was not “my register”. A few familiar faces and many new ones greeted me at the McCafe. Register Captain Geoffrey and owner of a White 997 2008 Carrera approached me to write this article within minutes of my arrival. I obliged as Richard, another 944 renegade and my navigator, would be my scribe for the day, unbeknownst to him. Five pages of run notes, 3 maps and a coffee and/ or pit stop later, the group departed Maccas en route to our morning tea stop in Whittlesea. According to Channel 7 meteorologist Jane Saturday evening, the group could anticipate a windy day of up to 70 knots but that was the only real weather concern. I laid down the law early with my Richard – no food or drinks in Dietfried and if I yell out a comment, write it down on the run notes at the kilometre mark. Simple rules but as I was to discover later maybe too much multitasking for his first navigation. 56

PORSCHE

PARADE

The Springvale Rd intersection managed to separate groups of cars. Jane broke away in her Bentley. She had left the 993 RS at home and the GT3 was on a hoist. Obviously the absence of manual transmission didn’t affect her take off. My bad gear selection on Wellington Rd allowed Neil and Phyl to catch up in their 1988 Arctic Silver 928. 12km in and the sun appeared. Another 4 km and we were pretty much in the country- horses and balloons(?) accenting the warm colours of glorious autumn scenery. It must have been too distracting for a couple of navigators including Richard as we misinterpreted the run notes regarding roundabout exits. 1km on a dubious road lined with very tall trees (not the C404) in Belgrave, we U turned. Neil was nowhere in sight but we did see a black Porsche travelling down the hill on the opposite side of the roundabout. We deduced we were on the right track and began to follow it. Warming up on a few little chicanes around 21km added more dimension to the run thus far. It was very hard not to take the exit at 34km to the winery region. Who doesn’t love a cellar door on a Sunday? If grapes weren’t your fruit of choice one could stop for persimmons, kiwi fruit, chestnuts or homemade olive oil near Monbulk. The mystery black 997 Porsche turned off the route at 45 km which threw a spanner into the “Werks”, momentarily confusing Richard and myself. With some wisdom we decided to follow the run notes even if it meant following a hideous Dodge Cavalier with Queensland plates, passing by the York Hotel in Montrose and swerving around

several keen cyclists (remember 70 knot winds) akin to BMX bandits. Miraculously we caught up with Geoff and Barb who meant business as the spoiler was engaged at 10km per hour through a roundabout. The next 10 km had drivers tacking through Warrandyte area to eventually hit stunning Kangaroo Ground. No sign of Stephen and Karen in their 2015 Agate Grey Macan S nor Tas and Marlene in their 2009 Black Astra Twin Top. Mind you I probably wouldn’t have taken any notice anyway. (Couldn’t resist guys). Instead we had managed to find a pace car with a cycle on its roof along the bus route through Kinglake. Driving through the Yarra Valley was just divine. Equestrian Clubs, vineyards, stone bridges and the most challenging road on the run yet, Church Road all made mid morning fabulous. On our lonely approach to Arthur’s Creek Rd we were

greeted by cockatoos munching on the lawn, open green fields and more cyclists. Our bliss was obliterated by a horse float and road works slowing us to 25km/hr ensuring we could have a very good look at “Funfields” Adventure Park before entering Laurel St for morning tea at Whittlesea Deli Cafe. A sense of camaraderie came over me as I saw the fleet of Deutsch Autos parked outside including Peter and Lucy’s 2010 White Carrera and Nigel and Rosemary’s Black 997 Carrera S 3.8 Cabriolet. Bubbly cafe manager Amanda, working on her day off and her 5 staff (Naomi, Belinda, Tegan, David and Bethany on milkshakes) treated run participants to soothing T Bar teas or aromatic Di Bella coffee. (Amanda mentioned an extensive variety of milk was available- skinny, full cream, oat, almond, zymil , soy and A2. Wow!) Also on offer were a choice of huge, fresh blueberry, apple & cinnamon or banana muffins and the most delectable gluten free desserts. I indulged in a honey and macadamia cheesecake – just heavenly. After over running the locals, PCV members departed and began the 2nd leg of our journey. Destination – Coach and Horses Inn, Clarkefield. Business partners of 30 years and no strangers to a run, Alan and Bruce arrived at the cafe in their Black 2008 911 Carrera S as we were leaving. They assured me they haven’t had any blues yet but there must have been a miscommunication to explain their lengthy delay. Dean in his 2015 Agate Grey 981 Cayman took it upon himself to use his exceptional pilot skills to navigate himself ,Kane in his Silver Boxster

and Peter and Kylie in their 2003 Black 996 over the next 85kms. Farm animals 3km in stunned Richard for the next 12 km as he couldn’t have botched up navigation more. Right instead of left at T intersection at 15.8 km, straight ahead instead of right at 16.2km, another “detour” at 20.5km. He blamed it on the sugar at morning tea but I think he really didn’t want to take Wallan Rd. He did have a moment of genius disclosing a handy tip for winter runs….use the recirculation switch to turn off the blast of arctic air coming through the vents Vickie! He solved a mystery that has had perusal by several mechanics, discussions with fellow club members and numerous examinations of Dietfried’s manual lost for ideas. By now I think my odometer was 6kms out from the run notes which required more mental stamina from me when Richard would advise of the next direction. The weather turned a little hazy and significantly windier around 26 km. Great for the windmill in Darraweit Guim but not enough to clear the smoke in Woodend. The smoke must have caused poor vision for a roo and a rabbit that didn’t quite make it across the road. Instigated Richard and I talking about lunch though – sorry for any offence. Another horse float provoked the comment in my car “How lazy were horses and people today?” We had seen many horses in vehicles and bicycles atop cars. Philosophy aside, we arrived at the Coach and Horses. Horrified that a Mazda Sedan and a Ford Ute had the audacity to spoil my traditional photo of the Porsche car park outside our venue, I persevered with capturing the beauty on my phone while standing upon a rusty chair. I survived this art inspired feat and made my way into the dining room complete with country pub fireplace. We had lost Graham and Jadranka in their Blue 2004 996 turbo. Perhaps the Inn’s haunted history had deterred them. Bummer for them but bonus for the members who got extra dessert. Meals up for selection included sizeable Steak and vegetables, salad or chips, Crunchy Beer battered Fish and Chips and salad and a vegetarian dish. While lunch was being served,

car banter ensued. Neil and Phyl confessed that despite Phyl claiming to be a good navigator they did get lost in Monbulk and had a very good look at the real estate during the run due to a few wrong turns. Riccardo Rossi, owner of a Black 2000 Boxster 986 reckoned Jane threw the tail out on the Bentley. Rich coming from a driver that held up traffic deciding whether or not to drive with the roof up or down. Just for the record he missed out on the sticky date pudding which obviously was karma for throwing stones. Kon and Oltem (mates from way back) admitted to being a bit of a lead foot (whatever that means) whilst enjoying a Coopers Pale Ale and Merlot respectively . Other beverages on offer were a “nice Shiraz”, a 7/10 Cab Sav, a 7/10 Riesling, cold Carlton Draught (no VB), a fine Somers Pear Cider and refreshing lemon lime and bitters. All critiques by our ever knowledgeable PCV critics. And just when you thought your day couldn’t get any better pavlova with raspberries was the alternative dessert du jour. I may have shared an extra one with Kane and Richard. Ironically the biggest pack Deitfried found himself in was going home. Cars slowly peeled off on their way to abodes. Kane lead me on a great route home passing a picturesque church spire at Oaklands Rd on the Tulla. Waiting back at Mulgrave McDonalds was Richard’s maroon 944. What he lacked in navigation skills he made up in humourous conversation. Additionally I will give Richard 9/10 for hitting a cross roads on his Saturday night out and deciding to take the high road in light of the day ahead. That’s Porsche Club dedication for you!

Run to Trentham Boxster & Cayman Register Sunday 20th March 2016

As dawn broke on the final day of the Australia Grand Prix 2016, Formula One pit crews worked furiously on pit lane to ensure their respective teams had the best possible chance of taking home the coveted trophy. Likewise many proud members of the Cayman and Boxster register could be found in their respective garages ensuring a showroom finish on their pride and joy before leaving to meet up for the Autumn Boxster and Cayman Register Social Run to South West Gippsland. The run held particular sentimental value for my wife and I, as it was organised by the same lovely couple who had been responsible for organising our first run with the Boxster and Cayman Register and welcomed us so very warmly into the fold of the Porsche Club two years ago. Not to mention the fact that as a “seasoned” member, I have now come to realise that they are also known for organising runs with curvy roads aplenty – the favourite kind for any Porsche owner! A brisk but sunny morning that promised a great day ahead, greeted members and their vehicles as they met at the BP Service Station on the Pakenham Bypass in Officer. Slowly but surely

the familiar faces, both those of the owners and their vehicles began trickling in. Whilst some chose to warm themselves with a coffee, the die-hard enthusiasts could be seen admiring each other’s vehicles and catching up on the latest Porsche news. Following a briefing and the handing out of detailed drive notes, the drivers and their navigators (some more competent than others!) or in some cases just the drivers, set off towards their first destination – Luciano’s in Drouin leaving behind one esteemed Porsche Club member who had suffered a puncture that was getting repaired. I was assured that Gary driving his new Carmine Red Cayman GTS (and his skills on a racetrack) would surely catch up to the rest of us. The route to Luciano’s took us through some incredibly picturesque countryside as well as on the aforementioned Porsche friendly roads. Tight challenging corners followed by deliciously long straights allowed for the spirited drivers amongst us to hone their skills whilst keeping within legal limits. As we pulled into the car park located in front of Luciano’s, I spied through the corner of my eye a Carmine Red Cayman GTS sans puncture, a welcome sign that the group was now complete. A warm and welcoming interior and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee assaulted our senses as we walked into Luciano’s. Coffee orders were expertly taken before we were plied with plates overflowing with home-made slices and fresh scones, cream and jam. Absolutely decadent! Before indulging too much, and succumbing to that strange physical sensation of a sugar coma being gently kicked in the backside by a caffeine hit, it was time to take on the second half of the drive towards our next destination for lunch at The Old Dalyston Deli. If the route to Luciano’s was an appetizer, the route to the Deli was surely a degustation. Mountains of tight corners and the occasional straight, expansive landscapes bathed in glorious sunshine made for a challenging drive indeed for the drivers. Some of the navigators, mine included, were caught out enjoying the drive so much that they forgot to navigate, instead following cars in front. As a result a record number of corrective U turns were made on this

58

run. The Old Dalyston Deli was a converted church with beautiful stained-glassed windows, and old timber tables. Indulging and excess was definitely the theme of the day as we were once again plied with plates filled to the brim with a wide array of antipasto selections to share. Much wine and drink was shared along with the food as members shared their favourite parts of the day and used the opportunity to catch up on news since their last meeting. Looking around, I was struck by the fact that whilst each table was filled with members from different age groups and backgrounds, there was no lack of camaraderie or conversation for that matter – people who had been brought together by their love for a particular vehicle had formed friendships that had long surpassed their initial interest. I for one hope to be a part of this very special group of people for a long time to come.

Run to Mt Donna Buang Cayenne & Macan Register Sunday 20th March 2016

Sunday March 20th not only hosted the opening round of the Formula One season at Albert Park but more importantly the first Cayenne Macan Register run for 2016 after a brief hiatus in which time Cayenne and Macan models have continued breaking sales records for Porsche around the world. A 9:00am meet up at the customary Mulgrave McDonalds consisted of 7 Cayennes spanning each generation, a new Macan, a beautiful 911 SC plus an Italian V12 (that also uses a horse). Coffees and breakfast were enjoyed as the day’s itinerary was discussed under clearing morning skies following the storms of the previous 3 days which could make our intended roads potentially tricky but also managed to keep the Sunday traffic to an absolute minimum. Our roads included driving on some of the Yarra Range’s most scenic and enjoyable roads leading to Warburton for our first break. These were then quickly surpassed by some of the best back to back switchbacks all the way up to our

Porsche photo op at the Summit of Mt Donna Buang. Following our photo break at the summit, complete with Porsche branded water bottles for all (thanks Jake), a new feature was added to the run consisting of a 10km well-maintained but tight gravel road over the top of the mountain. Due to the recent storms there were some small branches and light debris to be negotiated here and there but the experience was well worth it given the views we were fortunate enough to see plus driving at 5-10kms an hour allowed everyone to absorb and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the incredible subtropical rainforest we were travelling through. When the gravel ended the tarmac started and we were once again presented with some of the nicest sweeping roads on the backside of the mountain. Suspensions were lowered, dampers put into sport and a last blast was enjoyed by all taking advantage of absolutely zero traffic until we turned towards Healesville for lunch at the award winning Innocent Bystander.

Run to Gippsland Mid 911 Register Sunday 15th May 2016

A perfect Autumn day welcomed forty participants in twenty-three cars, of which twenty were air cooled, for the Mid 911 Register Gippsland drive. Starting at the Croydon Hotel we set off on a previous known tour beginning on the Maroondah Highway, followed by winding along the Warburton Highway through Powelltown and on to Noojee for a coffee at the ‘Red Parrot’ cafe. From Noojee we headed through the woodlands and farmlands to Drouin East for lunch. For most of us the drive after Noojee was enjoyable and uneventful, with nice tight corners and narrow roads which were shouldered by large unforgiving gums. The combined noise of so many air-cooled Porsches would have sounded great amid the trees. The roads soon left the tree cluttered avenues and the country opened up to rich green dairy country where the views were as good as the drive. Long sweeping corners on a surface meant for great driving with the only unseen hazard being the occasional dip in the road. For some, the drive from Noojee was not so interesting, such a Gary and Paul in their 911 SC who managed to get a flat tyre not one minute 60

outside of Noojee. This also meant that “I don’t have a navigator” Jane in her 993 RS, who was relying on following Gary, was now was at risk of being lost in the hills. Somewhere else along the journey toward lunch Bernie, in his 1974 911s, witnessed a motorcyclist crash. Bernie of course stopped to help the rider to get back on the road, he and two other passers by managed to get the bike back onto its wheels, brushed off the rider and then he continued on his way toward lunch. Regardless of the events along the way the group managed to arrive at our lunch destination in one piece. The Parnassus Steak House is situated on

top of a hill above Drouin East and has the most magnificent views looking over a green Gippsland valley. No doubt that this location would be popular with weddings and photographers alike. We settled in for a two course lunch and as like many mid 911 runs, lunch was a noisy affair, as noisy as the air cooled 911s lined up outside. At times it was difficult to hear the person next to you let alone others at the table. Even so, great food, great company and arriving at a great location in great cars were an ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Morning Run to Woodend Turbo Register Sunday 15th May 2016

Our first Turbo Register run for 2016 kicked off with an early morning run from Porsche Centre Melbourne with our final destination being the ever popular Holgate Brewhouse in Woodend. Our day started with 27 participants sharing the Macca’s coffee at Porsche Centre Melbourne where the carefully prepared run notes were handed out. James and I introduced new members and advised that Porsche friendly roads had been selected for the run. The drive certainly lived up to expectations with an enjoyable run out through Greensborough, past the Yan Yean Reservoir, Donnybrook Hotel, through Romsey before finally getting to our destination in Woodend.

Over much discussion, the members declared that this was one of the better organised runs they had been on and were looking forward to the next Turbo Register Run which is scheduled for the 28th August.

Holgate Brewhouse, a landmark in Woodend, welcomed us with freshly brewed coffee and cakes that were enjoyed by the drivers and their guests. Our raffle prize of Holgate brewed beer was won by Julie Mason who was most surprised at the win.
