for sale at the moment as the new car is looking to be extremely good value. Currently there is a 991.1 GT3 for sale for $275k - that’s 997.2 GT3 territory! And to all those 997 GT3 owners who are advertising their cars as the last manual GT3’s, you better revise your Ads.
“Porsche Parade” is the official magazine of The Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. (ACN 005 727 0942) Publisher: The Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. PO Box 911, Kew, Victoria 3101 web site: www.pcv.com.au email: pcv@pcv.com.au
Have you read the review on the new GT3? I was so impressed that I wanted to drive up to my local OPC and plonk down a big pile of cash for my spot in the queue!

At last, Porsche have seen the error of their ways and have brought back the manual transmision as an option on their new flagship rocket ship. Sure, it won’t get you from 0-100kph in such a rapid rate (3.9 vs 3.4 sec for the PDK) but is that what these awsome machines are all about?
Editor
Rowan Burnett mobile: 0417 540 957 email: advertising@pcv.com.au
I for one would only have the manual. I drove the 991.1 GT3 RS in Dubai, and yes it was extremely fast. Unfortunately it did everything so well that I could not get my head around its speed as it was all just too easy. Now I understand that if you planned on seriously racing these cars that you would want the PDK to get you to the finish line first. But at the end of the day they are not Cup Cars and will not be racing for sheep stations but will mainly be driven by enthusiasts on the road and at club sprints. Having an extra pedal and gear shift gives the driver double the input and undoubtedly twice the fun! Sure, the PDK can do a quicker job of it but for me the manual is so much more rewarding which is what driving is all about. The new GT3 has a four-litre engine and is faster than the 991.1 GT3 RS, which owners have recently been trying to sell for 600k! With a drive away price of $340k and a manual box option you can see why there are a lot of GT3’s and GT3 RS’s SOCIAL SUB-COMMITTEE

The new 911R. I have never seen so much journalistic hype on a Porsche! It seems the only disappointing thing about them is their low production numbers that attracts speculators.

And hey presto the cars are being re-advertised months later for seven figures. (smells a little like the 930 Turbos in the late 80’s) I have heard that Porsche will ban you from buying any exclusive models in the future if you sell it too quickly for a profit, but at the end of the day they are creating this problem with their low production numbers. They are awesome cars, let the market decide how many will be made. Low production numbers for exclusivity is great, but it also robs those of us not on the exclusive list from ever enjoying them! president’s message
club committee 2016/17 Michael O’Brien President president@pcv.com.au
Tony Carolan Vice President & Competition Director motorsport@pcv.com.au
Welcome to all our readers of Porsche Parade. A special welcome to all the new members of our club who may be reading this magazine for the first time. Welcome also to anyone who has returned to the club or who may have recently attended their first event. It is hard to believe that by the time this magazine is received the year will be more than half complete – and we have lots more coming your way. It’s certainly not too early to ensure you have the 2nd of December locked away in your diaries as this is the date of our Annual Dinner. If you are a new member, or haven’t attended an Annual Dinner before, this is our Gala Event for the year, an event that has something for everyone; and the event that celebrates the success of the year and everyone’s involvement. Whether you are reading our magazine on-line, or in beautiful hard copy – enjoy the read. The club achieved a significant milestone during the month of May. Our Primary membership exceeded the 1,000 mark to finish the month with 1,011 primary members. Now this needs a little explanation. Our total membership as at the end of May was 1,660 which includes 649 partners and children. There is no doubt that our growth over the past three years has benefited from the VicRoads Club Plate registration scheme, but we are also experiencing increased participation from our members at all of our events. With such a significant membership base I realised just how many people I do not know, and equally just how many people do not know me. I would like to share with you why I joined the club. It was 2005 and I had just purchased my first Porsche. This was not my first sports car, nor was the club the first car club that I had joined. However I knew the best way to enjoy my car was to join the club, and I suspect this is a similar reason for many of us. I did not know quite what to expect from a club of Porsche owners, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a club full of welcoming, enthusiastic, and genuinely helpful nice people. This is especially the case with our competition group, who all go out of their way to assist fellow competitors improve their driving skills and lap times. Competition involves many volunteers – Marshals, Scrutineers, Officials and Administrators. I also found a club that rewards participation – the Social Award has since become the Participant of the Year Award. Participation in our club can be through many avenues. Our seasonal Social Runs, organised by the Social Committee are significant drives including morning tea, generally provided by a local CFA, and a lunch at our destination. These runs have grown and typically we can expect over 140 members participating in these events. Register runs follow a varied format, and whist designed to be smaller there may be up to 40 register runs in a year. This year I have taken a break from Competition and have joined the Marshalling group. This group of volunteers is critical to the club’s ability to run a successful event. They are a dedicated group, and the experience is a great way to enjoy the club’s motorsport by getting really close to the action. So I joined the club because of the car, but I stay a member because of the people,
and the involvement offered by the club. We do pride ourselves on being a welcoming, allinclusive and egalitarian club. A club that genuinely seeks to provide benefits to all members. The club relies upon volunteers in many areas, none more so than Marshalling. In particular we need some new Marshals to assist with our competition events. If you would like to have a try, and enjoy getting really close to some competitive motorsport action, please email or contact Mark Horton Andrews, our Marshal Co-ordinator. Mark’s email address is marshals@pcv.com.au. We completed our annual regularity event the LiquiMoly Sandown 240, on the 30th April. There is a YouTube video of this event which will be released shortly and will be accessible via our Facebook page, and our website. This event has grown over the years to become a permanent fixture on the motorsport calendars of many clubs. Several past presidents including Michael Chapman, Jeff Thomas, and Peter Harrison have been pivotal in the establishment of this event. To a significant degree our competition programme benefits from the inclusion of this event, financially but also as an increasingly challenging driving skill. Our promotion of this event through the use of videos, which has been relentlessly pursued and developed by Grant Stephenson over many years, has provided widespread communication of past events and has been responsible for its increasing success. I would like if I may, to single out one person, who has been responsible for this event over the past several years, and who has continually improved the administration and coordination of this event. This person has also been responsible for securing our sponsor LiquiMoly. On behalf of a very grateful President, Sandown 240 Competitors, and the wider Porsche Club of Victoria we send our sincere thanks to Clerk of Course Andrew Bonwick. I, among many others, look forward to next year’s event! Our magazine advertisers are critical to the success of this fabulous magazine. Please enjoy this magazine of course… indeed the contributions are our own, but also take a close look at our advertisers, and support them whenever you can and support those who support us! I sincerely trust you are enjoying your involvement in our club, and encourage you to extend your involvement by attending a new event for you. Have a look at our events and try something that you may not have tried before – extend your involvement. There are great Social and Register events being held all the time, Track events also – consider volunteering as a Marshal, come along to one of our club nights. Whatever you choose, we are looking forward to you participating in your club; enjoying the company of other members and driving our great cars. I look forward to welcoming you especially to a new event for you. Michael O’Brien President

We are now just over half way through the season with 6 events having been held and 5 to go. We have been blessed with good weather and the events have all run very smoothly with entrants getting ample runs. This is a real tribute to our volunteer officials and marshals who do a great job of running our events both professionally and efficiently. Since my last report we have had a sprint at Winton, the 4 Hour at Sandown and another sprint at Broadford. Entry numbers have continued to be high and for the first time in many years we maxed out entries and had a waiting list at the recent Broadford event. The 4 Hour regularity is the major event is our competition year and I’m very pleased to report that it was an outstanding success this year. The number of teams entered was well above previous years. In total we had 33 teams entered which was just two short of the maximum 35 that was set for this event. In total 18 different car clubs entered just short of 150 drivers. After many years of perseverance our 4 Hour, known as the Sandown 240, has now become well established as one of 3 annual regularity club motorsport events in Victoria that are very sought after and attract a broad range of entrants throughout Victoria
and even a few interstaters. Many teams come along all decked out in uniforms that make them look very professional. LiquiMoly were again very good in sponsoring the event with their logo emblazoned on all the cars and on every spare section of fence. Feedback from the Sandown 240 was particularly good with many teams rating it as their favourite motorsport event of the year. PCV teams came in first and second with the perennial Weltmeister team winning from the G Bodies team under Nick Cascone’s guidance and third being taken out by the Wide Stripes and Loud Pipes Mustang team. The Mustang guys really do add a lot of colour and great V8 noise. The new approach to consolidate the Cup, Modified and GT classes is certainly creating some good competition. Because it was felt that we were getting too many classes, the above 3 groups were consolidated into just one class championship for each, but to make the competition between different models fair, the benchmark times for each circuit were adjusted to cater for the difference in performance between newer and older models. This way a 996 Cup car can compete in our Cup Class championship with a 991
Cup car. The result has seen some very close competition in both modified and GT classes with around 16 entrants in each of these classes making for a healthy field. I am glad to report that after our issues with running passengers under the new CAMS passenger policy last year, we are now again running Entree class at almost all our events and taking marshals and occasionally other passengers for a few controlled laps during the lunch break. Sandown on 16 July will have been on by the time you read this article, followed by our Winton/DECA weekend, Phillip Island and our last competition event at Broadford prior to our President’s Day for everybody who wants to get a passenger experience at Sandown in late November. Looking forward to a great wrap up of the season. Tony Carolan Competition Director
social corner
Welcome to the Second Edition of the Social Corner for 2017. Already half way through the year, and whilst the cold weather is upon, we can continue to keep ourselves warm with great Social events through the colder months. Since our last edition we’ve been able to share with you another great Club Night, at Porsche Centre Melbourne, showcasing Classic Corner with an insightful presentation from Ben Musu highlighting the vision behind ‘Classic’ to maintain a direct connection with Porsches significant history, and that 70% of all Porsches are still on the road, and Porsche Centre Melbourne is 1 of 49 Porsche Classic Partners, and the only certified in Australia.
We also had the Annual Go Kart Challenge, as mentioned before it’s an engaging, thrilling and undoubtedly the ‘most affordable air cooled engine’ track event on our calendar, and our Autumn Run to Curlewis on the Bellarine, and a big thanks to David Turner for his assistance in organizing this Run. Finally finishing the season with the Winter Run scheduled on the 23rd July to Balgownie Estate in the Yarra Valley, focusing on great roads, great cars, great company, so please make yourself available to join us. I’d also like to warmly welcome our new members, and again reflect on how our members not only embrace our events through participation, but how we openly embrace each other, from new members to fellow members. Through our passion for Porsche
we are a Club, but whose members spirit goes beyond the brand that brought us together, we welcome you all, and a big thank you to all that make this Club a great community. Please feel free to contact me for more information in regards to Social Events and/or the Social Committee. Alex Harmati Social Director E: social@pcv.com.au

Story & Photos: Porsche Cars Australia
A 911 for the road and track The Porsche 911 GT3 delivers motorsportlike performance, a systematic lightweight construction and an unfiltered driving experience. The new generation of the radical 911 revealed at the Geneva Motor Show connects everyday driving and race track virtues like never before. At the heart of the latest enhancement beats a four-litre, flat six-cylinder engine. The extremely high-revving naturally aspirated engine with 368 kW (500 hp) remains virtually unchanged from the thoroughbred 911 GT3 Cup racing car competing in the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship. The redesigned chassis with rear-axle steering and the systematic lightweight construction are specifically tuned to convert the engine power into superior driving dynamics. Developed on the same test track and manufactured on the same production line as the GT3 Cup cars, Porsche’s motorsport technology has once again been incorporated into a street legal sports car. The new 911 GT3 really comes into its own thanks to its weight-to-power ratio of 3.88 kg/ kW (2.86 kg/hp). With seven-speed double-clutch transmission (PDK) as standard, which has been specifically tuned for use in the GT, the twoseater weighs in at 1,430 kg and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds on its way to a 318 km/h top speed. For proponents of pure unadulterated driving, Porsche will also offer the 911 GT3 with a six-speed sports manual gearbox as a no cost option. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint with the three pedal version takes 3.9 seconds and top speed is 320 km/h.

Fast on the corners, stable on the straights: Rigid chassis with rear-axle steering The chassis of the new 911 GT3 benefits from Porsche’s motor racing experience and its tuning has been reworked for even better driving dynamics. The new two-seater sits around 25 mm lower than the current 911 Carrera S. In addition to the further refined basic design, the chassis also boasts superior handling characteristics, thanks in large part to the active rear-axle steering. Depending on the speed, it steers either in the opposite or the same direction as the front wheels, thereby improving the vehicle’s agility and stability. The dynamic engine mounts and the rear differential lock also boost the car’s driving dynamics. When it comes to appearance, the 911 GT3 leaves little doubt as to its purpose. The dominant carbon rear wing emphasises the fact that the sports car’s form is determined by aerodynamics. The lightweight front end and front spoiler have been optimised for even better airflow. The aerodynamic enhancement is also evident on the lightweight rear end with exhaust air openings and on the new diffusor. Interior: Experience centre for exceptional driving dynamics The interior of the new high-performance sports car is tailored to the 911 GT3 driving experience. The GT sports steering wheel with a diameter of 360 mm originates from the 918 Spyder. Both the driver and passenger experience the dynamics in Porsche Sports seats Plus with enhanced seat side bolsters and mechanical fore/aft adjustment. The seat height and backrests are adjusted electronically. As the 911 GT3 is traditionally a two-seater, the seat pans in the rear are covered.
Porsche offers three additional seat variants for the 911 GT3: The adaptive Sports seats Plus boast electrical adjustment of all seat functions (18-way). The second option is sports bucket seats with folding backrest, integrated thorax airbag and manual fore/aft adjustment. And the third variant is full bucket seats made from light carbon fibre-reinforced plastic in carbon-weave finish. Club Night at PCM Tuesday 11th April 2017
Porsche Centre Melbourne, a regular and welcomed host of our Club Nights, with members always looking forward to the usual array of new Porsches on display in the showroom, but today members and guests arrived and were greeted by an array of very well presented classic Porsches from 356 to the much admired water cooled 911s. With a welcome drink in hand, the classic collection became magnets for reflection and conversation with fellow members…’I recall when I bought one of these for $xx (not much) and look at them now, with a few thinking the what if only I kept mine’…then a toast to that moment with the glass at hand, and then onto reviewing the newest family members of Porsche cars. The night followed with a selection of buffet treats, then onto the Welcome Address from our President, introduction of new members, and Club Announcements from Competition, Registers and Social. Also to note was the ‘last call’ to secure a bargain ‘future classic Porsche’ (t-shirt) with the sale of the Porsche Club apparel, which some took advantage of but unsure whether they were going

to place their investment into storage, or start wearing with pride. This was followed by a welcomed surprise to all those in attendance, was a small gift of chocolates from our Club Easter Bunny supported by Carly and Lisa. Our feature presentation was Ben Musu of Porsche Centre Melbourne, who leads Classic Corner. Ben Musu has not quite followed the traditional sales career path, and previously worked in the restaurant trade in Bryon Bay prior, but saw the light at Porsche Centre Melbourne. Ben then explained the vision behind ‘Classic’ which is to maintain a direct connection with Porsches significant history, and that 70% of all
Porsches are still on the road. Noting Porsche Centre Melbourne is 1 of 49 Porsche Classic Partners, and the only certified in Australia. The level at which the factory is also supporting Classic was explained by Ben as Porsche now keep an electronic part catalogue on all models, with retrieval of all parts by VIN from the 964 onwards. At a local level Porsche Centre Melbourne, has key personnel in the Service Department being put through factory training in the Classic Program to ensure the next generation continues the connection with Classic. Whilst Peter Bowen is a qualified technician certified to service Porsche Museum Vehicles.
Ben highlighted a recent appointment is Service Advisor, George Belmont who has history dating back to the 80’s at Hamilton’s, thus offering customers the ability to discuss in detail the needs of the Classics bought in by customers. The presentation was concluded by Ben with a few questions from the audience, and one noting that even though he has a passion for Porsche somehow still kept a soft spot for Alfa Romeo.
With the formalities of the evening concluded, members had the opportunity to continue reviewing the Classic range and again reflect on that Classic question…’if I only I kept mine’. Finally, thank you to all those who attended, and assisted on the night, and Porsche Centre Melbourne and their representative staff Kate, Ben, Austin, Dale and Rae.

Story: Ron Widdison, Editor - June 2017 Yes, “What’s in your Garage” has just celebrated its 30th instalment!
WIYG turns 30!
It all started 8 years ago when I saw a similar concept in a UK Porsche magazine and I thought it would be a great edition to Porsche Parade, as we have so many fantastic collections in the club. My first garage to visit was no other than Will and Barbara Darvall’s. Will and Barb, (both life members of the club and Will is a former President) were good friends of mine and Barb is also the person who I have known longest in the club as she introduced me to Porsches when she was my next-door neighbor in the 90’s. Will has a 550 Spyder replica which he built himself over a 10 year period and Barb had an ‘84 3.2 Carrera at the time which she competed in. They also have a Cayman and an Audi RS4. After photographing the cars, I asked Will to pen a few words about his cars to go with the pictures. He did such a great job that I suggested that he join me in doing articles on other members, and eight years and thirty stories later we have one of best for you in this edition of the magazine.
Craig Rayner and Will Darvall during the WIYG interview I would personally like to thank Will for his wonderful efforts over the past eight years and hope that he wishes to continue working with me on future articles. His knowledge and sense of humor always make for a great interview and
article and I’m sure the owners of the Garages appreciate his efforts and talent as much as I do. If you enjoy the articles and or have any suggestions please drop me ann email to pass onto to Will at editor@pcv.com.au

Revisted
For the first time, we are revisiting a Garage of long time member and Porsche expert Craig Rayner. Craig has recently moved to the country and has built a purpose-built garage for his wonderful collection. For the first time, also we are making a video of WIYG with the help of Justin Parker, a new member who is studying Film and Television at Swinburne.

If you are of weak disposition, have a dicky heart, or emotional instability, look away now. If you are prepared to risk it anyway, read on. The shock therapy may even fire you up! We first visited Craig Rayner’s perfectly presented collection for Issue 2 of PP in 2011. (All issues of Porsche Parade ever produced by the Club are on our website; this is Issue 192 and WIYG? Number 30). Now, 6 years later, after moving to a near country property, the collection of cars, models and memorabilia have more room, are even more selectively chosen
and, as “a dream come true”, are all displayed in one large newly constructed 16x18m you-beaut garage. Craig’s attention to detail, selection and preparation are amazing; how there are enough hours in his day is hard to calculate. With this collection, my words are superfluous. Suffice to say that Craig is a country boy, son of a car nut, who had up to 20 cars at a time, including a 300SL Mercedes Gullwing, perhaps the most famous car ever produced. Briefly, Craig has worked in various businesses, having trained as a spray painter, moving to car sales, then his own business, Creative Colour Design and Display, for 25 years, developing display products, doing fit outs for stores and many types of events, until working in another business, Full Throttle Garage (now
Rennsport Garage), doing car preparation, carrying out or sourcing car repairs or restoration, selling models and memorabilia, in fact doing anything that involves cars! Porsche additions Craig’s Porsche epiphany began in 1994, when he bought an ’86 944 Turbo, followed by many different 968s and the 924 Carrera GT, until he branched out to the 911s. RSR Porsches & Coffee by the Bay Sunday May 7th saw another cold morning for the RSR Garage Porsches by the Bay event, free coffees x 50 gone in less than 45 mins with the first arrivals on the dot at 7am. Luckily the rain at 6.45 cleared to a mostly sunny morning and another great turnout eventuated including 3 GT3 RS’s and two 964 turbos. Mark Clair arrived in the Rally car he had been driving
in Targa Tasmania and the usual spread of 944’s 911’s Caymans and Boxsters were all on show. Was great to see new faces as well as old and the talk was obviously all things Porsche. One GT3 RS owner who will remain anonymous brought his baby out despite the threat of rain and it subsequently saw its first shower…..seen leaving in a rush as the clouds gathered.
Next Event due on July 30th when we will revert to the previously used North Point Café at Brighton beach carpark : 7-9am : follow Rsrrevhead on Instagram and Blog for details.

“Welcome back!”
Classic Porsches have officially returned to their traditional home – Porsche Centre Melbourne. “Welcome back!” That was the message of General Manager, Piero Pellegrini, at the official launch of Porsche Centre Melbourne as Australia’s first – and only – Porsche Classic Partner. The appointment of the flagship Australian Porsche Centre was special in world terms, making it only the 49th of more than 800 Porsche Centres to be accorded this status. For the 250 owners and other Porsche enthusiasts present at the Saturday evening function, where over 30 classic Porsches took centre stage in the showroom floor and workshop. Porsche Centre Melbourne and its progenitors under the Hamilton banner is the spiritual heartland of Porsche in Australia, dating back to the arrival of the first two 356 models locally in late 1951. In recognition of this wealth of history and experience, Porsche Museum cars have regularly been entrusted uniquely to the Centre for maintenance and repair, while one 28

However, Porsche Centre Melbourne’s appointment as a Porsche Classic Partner was not a foregone decision. To qualify, it’s team of nine dedicated Porsche Classic specialists covering service advisors, technicians and parts interpreters had to undertake specialised training to meet stringent certification standards. “Porsche’s history still plays a defining role in shaping the company’s future and the job of Porsche Classic is to keep the fire burning,” Director of Porsche Classic, Mr Alexander Fabig, told guests at the celebration function. “Our aim is not to have as many Classic Partners as possible, but the right Partners. As a result, Porsche Centre Melbourne joins a very exclusive group”. The Porsche Classic Partner programme offers special services and rewards to owners of all Porsche models dating from the

thus the first-generation Type 955 Porsche Cayennes (2002-2010) will be included from 2020.
These advantages included pre-purchase services, ranging from pre-purchase inspection and authentication, discounted hourly servicing rates, privileged fast access to more than 52,000 (and growing) rare Porsche Classic parts, to total restoration project management.
“So, everyone who buys a Porsche today is already – or soon will be – the owner of a Porsche Classic,” Piero said.
Current Porsche models will be added to the Classic programme on the 10th anniversary of the completion of each model series,
Mr Fabig said that while not every single part from the past was yet available, 80 people were working at Porsche headquarters in Zuffenhausen, Germany to remedy this. “More than 70 per cent of all Porsches ever built are still on the road around the world today and
we estimate that around 650,000 of these are Classic Porsches,” he said. “We are reaching out to all their owners.” Collecting the classics Gathering the superb collection of Porsche Classics for the Classic Partner Launch was entrusted to Pre-Owned Sales Specialist, Ben Musu and Senior Sales Consultant Austin King. But while his encyclopaedic knowledge of the owners and whereabouts of the most important Porsches in Australia is immense, it was still a challenge. “Some owners were overseas and their Porsches were simply not available,” he said. “In other cases, the cars were undergoing restoration. Then there was the responsibility of presenting them at their best and ensuring their safety in our hands.”
A drive in the country Porsches are meant to be driven and what better way to mark the appointment of Porsche Centre Melbourne as a Porsche Classic Partner than to take a selection of older cars on a spirited drive to lunch in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Grey skies didn’t dampen anyone’s spirit as we set off for the Yarra Valley, choosing a route offering
The Classics he sourced for the evening function served as a memorable stroll down memory lane for guests. A magnificent 356 Speedster; a rare quad camshaft Carrera GT; several stunning early 911s; a magnificent all-wheel-drive twin turbo 959; a rare 911 Carrera Speedster, and so on. “So many wonderful cars in period colours,” exclaimed one guest. “Like wildflowers in spring. . . “ Memories. . . Apart from the soft jazz, the flow of Champagne, the taste of delicious espresso martinis and the superb accompanying hand-food, one of the highlights of the evening was the informal Q&A chat on the showroom stage with several well-known Porsche owners, who explained the genesis of their Classic Porsches passion.
both highway and B road driving. On approach to the elegant Oakridge winery, the sun made a welcome appearance as we arrived to a driveway lined with hay bales and Porsche Classic Partner flags. It was the perfect occasion for many of the guests with multiple Porsches at home to exercise their favourite, such as Stewart and Ingrid Webster and his son Alex and wife Sonya, who arrived in
Ignatius Oostermeyer explained how his two Classic Porsches – his 1977 911 Carrera 3.0 and 1964 356C Coupe – were “an extension of who I am. “They are a sign of good taste. They set you apart,” he said. Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Silvana Marasco, said she inherited her love of Porsches through her father and the distinctive Apple Green 911 SC he purchased new in 1978 is amongst her current and growing collection of 10 Porsches. “Design and colour are very important to me and my Porsches have that emotional connection,” she said. Austin King, who is the ‘elder statesman’ or Porsche Centre Melbourne Sales consultants and a former owner of a classic 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, said there were
their black 1958 356A Coupe and early Ice Green 3.0 litre 911 Turbo respectively. Brothers Travis and Vaughan Carlin brought Travis’s two rare 911 Targas– his Guards Red 964 and black 993-series Carrera 2 models, while Ignatius and Lori Oostermeyer arrived in Ignatius’s beloved 356C Coupe.
several cars on display that he had sold new. Amongst them was the 1979 model 3.3 Turbo still owned by serial Porsche enthusiast, Max Errington, which was displayed alongside his former 1969 Aussie Blue 9111T and red 356C Coupe. “I’m sure many of you, like me, have stories of the Porsches you should never have sold,” said Austin. The owners of the rare and beautiful Classics on display that evening were obviously not amongst them!
Below: L-R Dr Silvana Marasco, Austin King and Michael Browning
The clouds parted and the sun shone again as lunch concluded and the Classic Porsches stirred back into life and headed home again, passing on the way within a couple of kilometres of Lilydale Airfield, where the first official gathering of the Porsche Club of Victoria was staged nearly 42 years ago in 1975. A truly Classic weekend.

Winton Sprints
Sunday 2nd April 2017
ISSUE 2, 2017

The weather gods smiled upon us at Winton Raceway, Benalla on Sunday April 2nd. After Phillip Island and Sandown, this resurfaced 2.99 km 12 corner circuit provided a slower, more technical challenge for most drivers especially those like myself who had only been there twice before. My goal was realistic and obtainable - absorb as much information and advice on the day to bring up the group 2 rear respectably without too much loss of face, and achieving a PB in the 991 GT3 whilst keeping it in one piece to drive home. This obviously required some planning!
After the obligatory and entertaining driver’s meeting pep talk we headed out for a warm up lap - you know, the one you never turn on the GoPro for. For some, the dummy grid provided the first challenge - a black 996 decorated by the still attached fuel filler nozzle, and a white GT3 (ok that was me) with two sets of numbers (two drivers) trying to confuse the officials. Speaking of which - the officials were repeatedly impressed by the group 5 cars already lined up at the dummy grid each time before being called.
We’ve all heard the adage “Failing to plan is planning to fail” so, as per the well known motor racing tradition, the preparation started the night before in Benalla at a wonderfully informative driver’s dinner in Georgina’s restaurant (thanks Fitzy !). Luckily we had about 10 hours afterwards for some of the “preparation” to wear off.
It was obvious turns 5-9 would be where lap times were made or lost - where the men/ woman would be separated from the boys. This is where I got to wave to a lot of drivers thankfully I never saw any other kind of gesture in reply. Watching a certain purple 991 GT3RS pull away with such power and skill provided both awe and inspiration. Some of you may have seen the quick white 996 GT3 producing the massive dust cloud exiting turn 9 - a possible short cut to turn 11 ?? (google Pythagoras’s Theorem). For in-car action we also had a report of a can of sunscreen (expired 2013) roll out from under the passenger seat during an out lap, many years after being lost.
The day was organised into two sessions - a morning “long track” and afternoon “short track” session. If you were lucky enough to be associated with the right track support group there was also a very nice BBQ lunch in between the two sessions - a great way to ensure you couldn’t be bothered getting back in the car for the afternoon session (not to worry I had my 10 sec PB already!) Getting back to the event - there were 59 participants. The usual Porsche suspects were there but also a surprise contender to shake up the traditional dominance of the Carrera Cup cars - a menacing looking bad boy orange McLaren 570s GT4. Easily the most amazing manoeuvre for this beast on the day was getting it off the trailer lift in the morning with literally only millimetres of room to spare on each side! Pre race scrutineering was again indispensable for discovering what gear you forgot at home. One scrutineer reports reminding a Cup Car driver of the need for scrutineering, but more gossip to come.
Aerial Photography: Ron Widdison
Apparently the afternoon session was enjoyed by many but alas I was already on the way home after a lovely BBQ. Many thanks to the Fitzy track support group for another great day. Of course also many thanks to all the PCV organisers, officials and marshals without which these events cannot happen - I have also been specially requested to thank the “grid girls” for a wonderful job getting the cars out onto the track - Caroline, Harriet and Michelle. The track anecdotes were kindly supplied by Michael Bailey, Ian Geekie, Tas Kozaris and Ken Anson.

There were 94 attendees that met at the Rockbank BP Service Station. David Turner organised the run, briefed everyone, introduced new members and handed out drive notes. He also discussed the route so nobody would get lost or make any wrong turns! Despite during the week a prediction of a day of rain, the sun was shining which was a welcome surprise. The route took a welltrodden road to the south of Rockbank to the Geelong/Bacchus Marsh Road which led to Anakie and then Bannockburn CFA for a well-earned morning coffee stop. As usual the local CFA did not disappoint with a mind blowing assortment of hot savouries and cakes as well as real coffee out of a real expresso machine instead of the usual instant variety!
Alvaro presented a donation to the CFA Vice-Captain on behalf of the Club who then gave us a very interesting run down on the history and the community involvement of the voluntary brigade over nearly 100 years. Shortly before midday the group continued with the second stage of the drive notes which took us through a scenic drive towards the hillside areas of Gnarwarre, Cape Otway Road, through Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove. As we drove into Curlewis Estate I know the drivers appreciated the staff at the Curlewis Golf Club flattening out speed humps and directing our cars safely towards the carpark. The Golf Club has had a major transformation in the last 12 months which has elevated it to one of the top 100 Golf Clubs
in Australia. It was an impressive location with an equally impressive menu and service, and a big thank you must go to the Curlewis Gold Club organisers for great service. We are all fortunate as Porsche Club Members to enjoy such events with great driving roads and venues which is due to a number of active Members within our Club. David Turner is one of these members who continually has involvement with organising events along the way. Thanks to all concerned who contributed to another successful event.

Story: Ken Marriott Photos: Porsche Centre Melbourne
In Our Service…. No. 1: Porsche Centre Melbourne
Porsche Centre Melbourne Members of the Porsche Club of Victoria are fortunate to have a strong and diverse support network to keep their treasured vehicles on the road. The network ranges from new and pre-owned vehicle dealers to mechanical and service providers, body workshops, upholsterers, spare parts distributors, tyre and wheel specialists, insurers and many more. In the first of a series of reviews of these important support organisations and the services and opportunities they provide to PCV members, Porsche Parade talks with Piero Pellegrini, General Manager, and Kate Holcombe, Marketing Manager, at Porsche Centre Melbourne. It is only fitting that Porsche Centre Melbourne is the focus of our first review as PCM and it’s forebears, Hamiltons, are without question, the spiritual home of Porsche in Australia. Without Norman Hamilton and his son Alan, Porsche in Australia would be nothing like it is today. We would be highly unlikely to have a legacy which stretches back to the mid 1950s, making it one of the oldest Porsche dealerships outside Europe. We would most probably not have the direct access to factory-level skills and services. We would not have the diversity of other support and service organisations that Porsche Cars Australia has engendered across the State, and we would be highly unlikely to have the strong fraternal environment that Victoria’s Porsche lovers enjoy today. Sitting in the updated and expanded lounge area waiting to catch up with Piero and Kate, I reflect on what came before the present, extensively redeveloped PCM. I recall photos of the first Porsches being sold through a multi-brand car dealership, Hamiltons, on the corner of Swan Street and Punt Road back in the 1950s. 42
PORSCHE
PARADE
I recall Hamilton’s single-fronted shop in Chapel St where I bought my first Porsche through Tony Jones way back in 1974. I recall the subsequent moves to the far larger showroom and workshop on the Chapel Street/Alexandra Avenue corner in the later ‘70s, then up the road to the Bryant and May building and finally, in 1998, on to what will surely be PCMs long term home on Victoria Parade in Collingwood. So here we are now in what is clearly the largest and most opulent Porsche dealership in the country, with a showroom currently displaying some 25 different cars –including three classic Porsches (of which more later), with an attractive reception, a café, merchandising as good as any overseas (and which you once had to go to Stuttgart to match!), and an
Piero Pellegrini
undercover pre-owned and Porsche Approved display area capable of accommodating 18-20 vehicles. The redevelopment has doubled the capacity of the past so that PCM can now service as many as 45 cars a day. The workshop now features 32 hoists, up from 17, with three dedicated to motor sports vehicles and another three to classic Porsches. So what does PCM offer Porsche Club of Victoria members? Piero Pellegrini explains that as one of only two flagship, factoryowned dealerships in the country, PCM can offer the full gamut of Porsche services: factory-direct specification of all features and equipment levels for every model; a wide selection of quality, tested, pre-owned and Porsche Approved vehicles; efficient
and often, same-day provision of parts, particularly through the use of smarter storage systems and direct access to the national Porsche spare parts depot in Keilor (with a 5% discount for PCV members); a range of specialist driving experiences and testing days; full servicing and development support for Porsche motorsport at all levels; the hosting of frequent PCV club nights and events and since May, the unique services of Porsche Classic assessments, servicing and restorations. The upgraded PCM now has over 70 staff. And I get a strong impression that you have to be someone pretty special to get a job at PCM: you have to share the passion, believe in the brand and fit the ethos of the organisation. Skills alone are not enough. This is so much the case that some staff have been on the books for as long as 34 years while there is more than one father-son team that work there as well. Amongst the workshop staff are 8 apprentices who, while undertaking their apprenticeships, are also involved in all aspects of the workshop program and who undertake both Porsche training programs and programs identified by PCM as being appropriate to the specific needs of Victorian customers. Continuity of commitment is seen as paramount. PCM was awarded the prestigious status of a Porsche Classic Partner in May this year, celebrating the dealership as only the 49th such venue around the world and the first and only one in Australia. Presently, the focus is on both partial and complete mechanical restorations and upgrades. Over the longer term, this will be extended to full, groundup restorations including all elements of body and paint shop work. As evidence of the stimulus provided by the establishing of Porsche Classic, work has already been undertaken on a 356, a 2.7 Carrera, a number of early 911s and on a 928, 964 and 993.
Porsche Classic assessments, servicing and restorations.
PCM Classic Team
So what of growth and change? Like other unique brands, Piero sees the future as one of customer retention, organic growth building on what he sees as the unique Porsche “family” with its passionate members and supporters. He states that he doesn’t want to see rapid growth: he wants to continue to be able to spend time on the workshop floor talking to customers as valued clients and ensuring that their needs and aspirations are met. He sees that electrification and the changes that this will engender will come but that looking after the cars of today and the past will always be a core focus of PCM. So when you’re next in the city, take a run down Victoria Parade to PCM in Collingwood. They’re not as obvious now that the silos have gone but the place is buzzing from the moment you walk in the door. Take a coffee, take a walk around, chat to the team, ask a question or three. Talk with Ben Musu about your classic Porsche or buy a new or pre-owned vehicle. Buy some spares or some merchandise. You will be welcome. As Piero says, “Porsche customers don’t need to buy Porsches, they simply want one!”. PCM is, and will remain, the spiritual home of Porsche in Australia. Piero Pellegrini and his team understand that legacy, they work to respect it and love to share it.
PCM Motorsport Team
PCV wishes to thank Piero Pellegrini, General Manager, at Porsche Centre Melbourne for his time and input to this review. PCM Showroom ISSUE 2, 2017

I only service cars for my friends... It doesn’t always start that way, but that’s how it ends up. We both own Porsches, we have shared values and interests. They’re skilled and committed to their careers, same here. When I started as an apprentice at Hamiltons over 15 years ago, it was bred into the Service Team to always go the extra mile, always strive for excellence. I call it the “Hamiltons Touch”, and it’s part of my DNA. My friends deal directly with me, I do the work, I answer their questions, I sort problems. They get the Hamiltons Touch without the price. … and I’m always looking for new friends. “the car ran beautifully...the whole car was feeling more refined… A very good outcome and satisfied customer.” Stephen Marshall “my wife is very happy with her Boxster’s performance and says it even sounds better... your follow up call was also greatly appreciated.” John Mitsy

2017 Go Kart Challenge
With 36 participants in total, it was the biggest Go Kart event run by Porsche Club Victoria to date. Held at Ace Karts in Albion on a cool Thursday night, the competition was equalised due to a unique reverse track configuration being adopted for the event. This enabled racers who were unfamiliar with the track to really get amongst the seasoned drivers and race on a level paying field. The event was split up in two groups, consisting of 12 teams of 3 drivers, where each driver completed qualifying and two races, with the quickest drivers of the night battling it out in the Grand Final, eager to gain as many points as possible for their team. The main race was littered with action from the very first corner as the leading drivers were spun, and put to the back of the field, creating many over taking manoeuvres while they fought their way back to the front. The event was won by ‘Team Radical’ of Robert Baird, Thomas Baird and Jan Jinadasa with a combined points total of 115. Second place went to Team ‘P-RS’ of Phil Mingerulli, Ross Del Gallo and Steven Del Gallo with a total of 113 and third place went to Team MMM of James Cunningham Matt Bray and Stav Haviaridis with a total of 102 points. The lap record for the night went to Robert Baird, with a blistering time of 39.091 seconds achieved in the final race. This event provides a chance for all drivers, young and old, of any skill level to get together and enjoy a fun and enjoyable team competition. We’ll be back next year with an even bigger event.

• 33 teams entered this year; 6 more than our previous best and only 2 below our track limit. • 15 teams were from PCV members with 18 from other car clubs. • The 18 non-PCV teams had entrants from 19 different car clubs. Our Sandown 240 is really becoming a major event in the Victorian club motorsport calendar.

If ever there was a reason to come join the fun of the PCV Competition, it is Broadford. An hour from Melbourne and you are at a wonderful undulating track which has a seemingly unending left-hand uphill sweeper, fast zoom, slightly bumpy back straight, sharp right, then a dash down the hill through a few squiggles, turn, stay on track, full pace downhill once again, round another semi-circle, full pace again, getting ready to turn to enter the front straight, and ooh, it is blind, and then round again! The day was fully booked and the weather was perfect. So to Open. Phil Treloar made a winning debut in this Class with his RSR Clone despite a number of off course excursions as he came to terms with his new steed. Close behind were regular Open contestants in their 997 Cup Cars being Stan Bougadakis in second, and Joseph Ensabella in third. Rally ace Rex Broadbent showed his driving prowess in his wonderful Targa Tasmania Makalu Storage 911 3.4 RS. Rex’s car has a lot of history and a lot of success so it is always a privilege to witness it in action. Now to Cup. 996 Cup Cars saw Andrew Hall take this one out over James Papas, and gain a stunning 121 Class Points for his victory.

PORSCHE PARADE
M1. Bob Hawker has pretty much had this Class to himself for a while – probably because he always sets amazing times in his 996 GT3. This year Nick Karnaros has moved from winning everything, including Open, in his Cup Car last year, to running his 993 3.6 in MI. This time, Nick beat Bob, but stay tuned as the year pans out as I suspect both are very competitive. Ken Eve was third in his 1995 993 GT2 Replica, and Mark Clair in his 911 Carrera RS close behind. What a mix of cars!
Class A. With Phil Treloar perhaps wandered off to Open, perhaps all are rejoicing in A! Who knows? Anyway, Andrew Smith, Juris Briedis and Darren Jones were all very close in that order. Mention must be made to Troy Hungerford who was not far behind and is quite a new competitor who I think has heard travels from near Phillip Island way.
M2. Once again Ben Faggetter dominated, with Ian Chiron in second and Paul Sbrissa third. Regular competitor in this class, Mike Herrod, was rumoured to be at the Isle of Man for the motor cycle race along with some other PCV regulars. Given Broadford is very kindly lent to us cars by the motorcycles, our thoughts are to those two wheeler dare devils.
Class C. Saw a good battle between regular protagonists Pete Matherson, Mark Chrzanowski, Grant Stephenson and Cameron Goodyear. They prevailed in that order.
GT1. The battle of the red 991 GT3s. Stefan W. (I have a Polish Grandma who has an easier name to say than yours!) set a very good time.
With 7 run groups and everybody getting 6 sessions on the day, that accounted for 42 sessions which our timekeeper, Timetronics, advised us was a record number for a club event.
GT2. Simon Dunn should be very happy with his very strong win over Andrew Richmond and Gil van der Venne. GT3. A very close category with Peter Harrison, Ian Geekie, and Tony Carolan coming in that order.
Class B. Richard Thompson won with Carlo Fasolino second and Frank Sallas third.
Class D. This is the class of those Hawaiian shirts fellows in the Regularity. I have heard that Gary S. beat Gary V. so this is a great win!
Thank you to all the marshals and organisers, and see you all again in October at marvellous Broadford.

“Through the back of the Dandenong’s to the Tarra Warra Gallery and Wild Cattle Creek Estate in the Yarra Velley.”
A total distance of about 130km had us driving for about 2 hours and 15 minutes (not including a 45 minute break at Tarra Warra).
At the civilised time of 9.00am on Sunday the 23rd April the mighty GT3s embarked on another fabulous run. The run was designed to excite the driver and delight passengers. We were oversubscribed but some quick calls to the lunch venue had that sorted.
Amongst our crew were a number of hardy souls braving the event solo. Unfazed they simply followed cars that were 2 up and therefore navigation enabled. So we learnt that attendance on register runs is not the exclusive preserve of couples.
Traversing the back of the Dandenong’s, the traffic thins and the roads opened out across rolling hills heading north towards the Yarra Valley. In this beautiful region we found a smorgasbord of open undulating roads finishing with a tight fun section just north of Healesville before our morning tea stop at the famous Tarra Warra Estate.
We were also surprised and just a little concerned when the good folk from the Highway Patrol showed up at the start. They were good humoured, admiring the cars and generally extending good will. They took the opportunity to tell us that since it was a long weekend that the highway patrol was out in force. Not that we needed to be concerned because all participants heeded our President’s recent call to run these events strictly within the law. There were no reported incidents.
Here there was time for art lovers to enjoy the wonderful exhibition by Louise Herman or simply to sip coffee under the peppercorn trees while appreciating the inspiring architecture. Another short but scenic drive on mostly traffic free roads took us to the lunch stop at Wild Cattle Creek Estate near Seville.
All in all, I think those who attended enjoyed the run.

Run to Killara Estate, Yarra Valley Story: Vickie Morris Photos: Angelo Monteleone Sunday 21st May 2017
The Mountain Lion Twins (a translation of their surname) certainly provided an eventful excursion for the lucky 50 odd PCV members attending the Torque Tube Run to Killara Estate Winery. It would be a different day out for me right from the start. I would be navigating for my partner Grant in his ……gulp…..red Mazda 6. This was a decision I had made as the weather forecast appeared to be reliable, promising a glorious 19 degree Melbourne autumn day. Wine tasting was on the agenda. I hadn’t indulged in a Sunday afternoon Shiraz for quite some time. I may be self-righteous but I don’t drink at all when I take Dietfried (my 964) out on a date, so you see my dilemma readers…..drive and not experience the wonderful produce of Seville East vines or volunteer fellow club member as my chauffeur albeit in an import. It was a tough decision leaving Dietfried behind but I bit the bullet and took up residence in the Mazzy’s passenger seat. Beginning at Porsche Centre Doncaster at 9.30am Frank and Gloria were punctual in their bright yellow 2015 Cayman GTS. Pole position in front of the dealership was taken by the double
trouble Twins in their model matching 944 S2s. Jonathan Ford parked his new acquisition a 2003 996 Targa behind the Mazda. Dealer Manager Raymond and his delightful daughter Mikhalia were on hand to greet us with delectable morning tea consisting of choc chip croissants, sweet slices and fresh fruit filled pastries accompanied by barista style coffees. Attendees wandering in perused the latest dealer temptations whilst enjoying a café latte. As a surprise, Raymond offered the members to lay eyes on an absolute gem of the Porsche lineage….some lucky person’s 911 R - repeat “911 R”. Simply mesmerising. I have vinyl records at home that look like 5 cent pieces compared to this monster’s discs brakes. With run notes distributed, and captain briefing done, Raymond surprised us with one last generous gift presenting everyone with a Porsche Cap. I could have gone home then and still have been totally satisfied. This club is the gift that keeps on giving. Beware new members as parking position is a pivotal part to getting out in the pack, otherwise you might get stuck at the back like us taking up last position behind Ivan and Domenico’s lovely 928 S4. Even though the first 4 kms heading east seemed relatively straightforward my navigation instinct was tested early on. I am sure I counted 4 roundabouts and then a right turn on to Stintons Rd, contradictory to the 3 roundabouts and then a right turn as stated in the run notes. Never mind, I let the fact that in front of me were at least 10 Porsches turning at the 5th. Grant was
60

over his wrestle with Ivan to achieve 2nd to last position and relegated himself to last again. There is something special about being last – you get the privilege of the blissful view of the inspiring club convoy motor along the bitumen. Too much distraction for Bernard and Rita in their 1974 white 2.7 911s. They missed the right turn at 17.4 km leading Ivan astray too. Not my first picnic, I instructed Grant not to follow and navigated him to a glorious 3rd to last position. We celebrated in re-joining the peloton bar until an irritating silver Toyota obstructed my view. The roller coaster Edward Rd enabled me to catch glimpses of the conga line ahead. Finally, we were behind John Iacovangelo’s 944 S2 1990 Guards Red Turbo. Celebration would be cut drastically short as the next part of the run would prove to be a survival of the smartest (GPS).Confusion reigned at 37.4km. The untested run notes sent the Torque Tube run into bewilderment. A false right turn on to the mysterious Don Rd C506 proved to derail drivers and puzzle navigators.
Everything from the statement making 1994 Black 968 CS Ray and Sandi drove, to Jade’s radiant Blue Macan with her sisters Bree, Skye and Finn in. Peter and Shelley’s super cool Black 944 S2 Coupe and Tony and Elisa’s sublime Black 1984 911 Targa stood off with the Gedye’s Red Boxster GTS and Blue Cayman GTS double trouble. Domenic and Jan’s Silver 996 also shone here. In front of another viewing platform to the left of the restaurant Tim and Nicole’s 944 S2 and Doukas’ 996 synced up side by side in sleek silver joined by Steven and Connie’s 1986 Midnight Blue stealth 928. What better place to pull over and assess your options than on a crest with double lines? A thought shared by the collective intelligence. Perplexed Porsches parked on the side of the road included 2 Red 944s possibly one being Nigel Watson, Darren and Tammie’s white Boxster Spyder, Meng and Yen’s Dark Blue 2011 Cayman, Jonas and Tzena 1989 Silver 964 and Paul and Jane’s Black 944 S2 CAB. Option one - continue straight ahead in hope Don Rd will appear or some other sign from the Higher Porsche Power. Option two -do a U turn at this marvellous position and go back in search of the aforementioned. The decision split the group, every team for themselves and Porsches began peeling off in a sight that was akin to fireworks falling in the sky. A tempting chocolaterie was strategically placed to try sway to me from my route, but decided to stay behind John’s Red 944. This was brief due to a Red 911 overtaking us and we arrived in the empty Killara carpark as Car #2 at 11.33am. I was quietly baffled. How did this occur? Sheer navigation brilliance Vickie! I revelled in my valour for some moments before the hounding pack arrived… including Alex and Luke in their 2000 Meridien Silver 996, Jenny and David Lorbek in a Blue 996 Carrera 4S and the Register Captains, ushering everyone to the grassy area in front of the winery restaurant for a spot of Porsche parade for the other restaurant patrons. The variety of models was glorious.
Out of our cars we swapped run observations. David flawed at how he arrived before the Macan after numerous position swaps. Tim amazed he stayed under the speed limit. Tony watching a serious family jostle as John skilfully overtook 3 cars to ensure his daughter would be relegated to “Also Ran”. Eager to try Killara’s offerings PCV members were ushered to the gazebo by our host and Sommelier Leo. Assisted by his son, he presented a casual but informative wine tasting experience highlighting the Prosecco, describing the best way to open the bottle and debunking some old wives’ tales. Pinot Grigio followed – the sentimental label depicting his Mum, Brother and family Lancia. Rounding out the 3, the Rascals Shiraz – a best seller. I would be so bold as to state the group was quite in their element, enjoying the tipple and soaking up the atmosphere but lunch awaited so we descended upon the dining area. Expertly presented Antipasto i.e. roast pumpkin, cheese stuffed cherry tomatoes, black and green olives, artichokes, salami and warm rustic bread adorned the two long tables dedicated to PCV. Some members made a stop at the bar enroute to their seat for some wonderful wine indulgence. I thoroughly enjoyed the Reserve Shiraz – bold and peppery.
The Monteleone Brothers, always with a trick up their sleeves, issued guests with unique raffle tickets that pictorially represented the Porsche legacy for the surprise later. Delicious varieties of the Italian staple were devoured. It didn’t stop there. As the prosciutto was being shaved in front of the kitchen, Kevin’s efficient staff swiftly delivered trays of enticing lasagne, sentiment supported by Frank and Gloria. Participants were starting to feel the challenge of the menu but how could one resist? The time for the raffle surprise arrived and manager/owner Leo was asked to do the honours. He shared his youthful story about the Blue 928 S4 that got away exclaiming Steve and Connie’s 928 S his favourite vehicle. To our surprise (read with sarcasm) Steve won 1st prize. “What The” The winning tickets were all in the single digits too eg 2, 3, 4??? Bucking the trend Jade came away with a bottle for ticket #29. As John told of his amusement watching CoCaptain Tony argue with navigator Kane and Sheryl described being elated that despite our differing journeys we all arrived at Killara, a little pastry treat was served to complete our degustation. May I commend the chef for accommodating the dietary requirements including a sensational meringue with fresh strawberries. Divine. With a few wines for the non-drivers under belt including me, PCV members began to head home bringing the sensational event to a close. Many quipped how thoroughly beautiful the countryside was and what great company was enjoyed. PCV should congratulate themselves for another brilliant event. Can’t wait for the next one…..with Dietfried.

Run to Highfield Estate New Gisborne Story: Maria Del Gallo Photos: Kon Gogos & Ken Anson Sunday 23rd April 2017
The Modern 911 Run to Highfield Estate New Gisborne started from McDonalds in Sunshine – and sunshine there was! It was a beautiful day to take a leisurely drive through country Victoria. After an informative briefing and a lucky raffle ticket from Kon we headed north around the airport on some Porsche friendly roads to a lovely morning tea at Mona’s Café in Bacchus Marsh. We had an enjoyable morning coffee and a catch up before the Porsches were on the road again - however some Porsches didn’t get too far as the local constabulary were setting up a breathalyser station – all good, after a huff and puff we were on our way once more. This time we headed towards Blackwood and Trentham driving through the beautiful scenic Macedon Ranges. Some of these roads were well travelled by our Porsches and some were new, all of which led us to our final destination of Highfield Estate – and what a beautiful destination it was! We enjoyed some delightful Hors d’Oeuvres out on the deck along with a welcome drink, followed by a delicious 2 course lunch in beautiful surroundings. After lunch it was time for the raffle to be drawn and we all held on to our lucky raffle tickets – some luckier than others! Nigel Watson was the 1st prize winner, Alvaro Del Gallo 62

Combined Porsche & Ferrari Clubs Coffee Run Story: Ken Anson Photos: Mark Dempsey, Kane Wilson & Kon Gogos. Sunday 9th April 2017
After two recent very successful all invited “casual coffee runs”, Modern 911 Register Captain Kon Gogos decided to take a quantum leap forward and put together a joint Porsche and Ferrari Club run.
destination, the Mt. Macedon Cafe right at the top of Mt. Macedon.
The organising was a little more difficult than originally thought, as FCV do not have permanent admin staff as we do, (thank you Carly and Lisa), and communications were a little disjointed for some time, but, with a huge input from Kon, and the help of FCV President Trent Smyth and Ferrari expert Carl Jones, it came together in the end.
But the Gods were with us initially, it was calm but cloudy at the well-known prestige car dealer Lorbeks in Port Melbourne where the genial David Lorbek and his engaging wife Jenny plied 37 PCV members, and a lesser number of FCV members with great coffee, hot cross buns, croissants and a selection of other very nice savouries.
The above para is an example of compressing almost four weeks of hard work into five lines!
Porsches ranged from 1981 to 2017 in all models, Ferraris were a little less thick on the ground, but noticed were a couple of 430s, a 575M, and David and Jenny’s California.
But there was something over which even the attending Club President Michael O’Brien had no control, and that was the weather. The forecast was very ordinary with high winds, low temperatures and heavy showers, and it was probably going to be worse than that at our
64
PORSCHE
PARADE
This inclement weather certainly deterred some of the Ferrari members from coming on the run.
The ever helpful Vickie “volunteered” to assist Kon with checking off the attendees while the rest of us admired the magnificent display of cars in the Lorbek showroom. This showroom display
is absolutely outstanding, a bevy of magnificent Ferraris by the window setting the standard of the display. After the inner man (and woman) was sated, Kon got down to business and briefed of the group, and also introduced a surprise at the same time. PCV member Brett Varga had generously donated a beautiful little Ferrari scooter for a raffle, and fittingly it was won by Ferrari owner Michael Heany. A bit of social engineering occurred when a couple of single drivers teamed up with other singles. Vickie arranged to navigate for new member Cameron Tribe and introduced him to the manner in which we conduct our runs, and she may have even had a drive of Cameron’s new 718 Boxster on the return. Kane arrived in an unusual conveyance for a Porsche Run. His Boxster had a small mechanical problem at Sandown, and that hard working
little car was in the repair shop, resulting in him arriving at the meeting place in his work van. There was no way that he was going to miss out on this run just because his Boxster was out of action. But Kon came to the fore and press ganged Kane into riding in his 996 and taking photos at the same time. Speaking of photos, a very big thank you to Mark Dempsey who also took a lot of excellent photos of this run from Alex Harmati’s 944 S2. With the heavens opening and the temperature dropping quickly to what seemed like a minus figure, and the wind getting up, it was time to go. There was minimal social talk in the freezing Lorbek car park - it was into the cars and away. A shower of horizontal rain hit Harriet’s Cayman as we exited Lorbeks, and I must admit a slight smile crossed my face as I saw a 944 turn down Todd Road instead of the sliproad to the Westgate Bridge, but maybe it wasn’t one of ours. A relaxed cruise on the freeway, (and no, it didn’t develop into a Cannonball run as a certain unnamed Social Director was concerned it might) saw us take the Toolern Vale turnoff, and then across to the Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Rd. I shake my head in wonderment at the genius who decided that the best driving section on that road should have permanent brightly lit speed signs strictly limiting traffic to 60 kph! The cars grouped up tightly through Bullangarook, but separated again after Gisborne for the run to Macedon. Traffic was light, and the run up the Mt. Macedon twisties in the fog was enjoyed by all. Not enjoyed so much was the light rain, the low four degree temperature and the strong wind as we got out of our cars and scurried inside, the original concept of “talking cars” in the car park having been totally discarded as soon as the car doors were opened. But inside the café was lovely and warm, and soon our orders for coffee and the biggest and nicest scones with jam and cream soon appeared on the various tables. As the coffee was drank, and the scones were being consumed, the next hour and a half saw the sound level in the room elevate with the talk of driving, buying and selling, the best mechanics, pros and cons of independents and authorised workshops, general car talk, and lunch venues etc etc. This was the perfect way to finish off an excellent day, and the ordinary weather did not even rate a mention. Well done Kon. Looking forward to the next one.

Early Morning Run to Yea Story: James Borg Photos: Margaret Russell & Nickola Hoffmann Sunday 21st May 2017
The Saturday prior to the first Early Morning Run of the year for the Turbo Register, and two more late entries managed to make the cut. That made a total of 17 cars and 27 participants – for a 7.45am departure on a Sunday morningamazing! So if there were a few empty spaces in the pews next to you at Sunday mass on the 21st May, it’s because people in the know were on one of the Turbo Register’s ever popular Early Morning Runs. Margaret and I arrived at our departure point on the Calder Freeway at 7.15am and we weren’t even first there. A steady stream of Porsches rolled into formation for a punctual departure. Even new member Rohan Cooray, accompanied by Vivian and a sparkling 997(II) Turbo were prompt in arriving. Interestingly, Vivian didn’t complain once about the distance she had to travel to make this trip, or the early departure time. Oh, no… Vivian was keen for an early morning run….despite coming all the way from Oman. That’s Oman, just east of Saudi Arabia! 7 Turbos, 3 Carreras, 2 Caymans, 3 Boxsters, an RSR replica and a stunning modern GT3RS completed the field. Thrilling to see such a great all-Porsche line-up for the event.

Colin Smith almost wasn’t a starter ( or so he thought ) as he’d parked over a tremendous oil-stain whilst a photo was being taken of his car and took a second to register that it wasn’t actually from his car. The Jaguar Club must have
parked in the same area on the previous day. Dennis and Helena sheepishly asked for a push to get them going….ahhh, flat batteries, like redlights, are the great ‘leveller’ of motoring.
Our order for sunshine on the day looked well on the way to being delivered, with nice clear skies and a lovely orange sunrise, although all soft-tops remained in place which was fortuitous, because it wasn’t long before we were blanketed in fog and hair-styles wouldn’t have carried that level of damp. We were off on time, and the lack of traffic resulted in a neat column of Porsches heading through Sunbury and on to Romsey. On taking a turn onto the Lancefield Rd, Tony slowed up his GT3RS to allow his daughter Alice to take some film-footage, giving several cars (me included) the opportunity of passing him for a change. The fog really had set in by the time we got into Broadford, and the slippery road surface on the downhill windy roads which followed had everyone paying extra attention. But the great parade of Porsches remained intact with no-one
turning their steep descent into a sudden ascent. We made an impressive site for the occasional pedestrian and cyclist.
Yea vineyard. This was presented as the prize in our raffle, and was won by a most appreciative Stephen Lofthouse.
We reached Yea by 9.30am or so and were right on schedule for breakfast, commandeering the adjacent car-park for ourselves. Jo and her staff at the Yea Emporium had reserved the front of their establishment for us and once seated hot coffee and tea were ordered.
The morning’s events were wound-up, with attendees deciding on whether to head for home……. extend the drive through King Lake….. or, politely accept an infringement notice from the local constabulary, like Tim.
The choices on offer for breakfast were incredible; eggs every which way- traditional or savoury, toasties, waffles etc. Excellent service and value. With breakfast done, most of us had a wander around The Emporium, looking at the bric-a-brac, buying old books, jams & preserves, frozen pies, chillies (for a gold coin donation) even eggs…. Trying to keep things regionally specific, Margaret even sourced a bottle of wine from a

We met up at McDonald’s Balwyn whilst the sun was out, however rain threatened. We all got off to a good start on a most enjoyable drive through the eastern suburbs via King Lake and Whittlesea. As we arrived at the Magpie and Stump Hotel, Wandong, we could smell the inviting log fire. We had a lovely hot drink and a fresh muffin before we continued on our way. It then started raining. However it was only brief and then the sky cleared. A wide variation of Porsches participated which is becoming the norm these days. The 993 register was well represented with a broad selection. The roads chosen became better and better, especially the road from Lancefield to Pyalong. The weather was ideal, the scenery magnificent and the rumble of Porsche exhausts was truly memorable. On arrival at Fowles Winery, we were directed to a special car park and then inside for a delicious lunch. As usual, a raffle was drawn with 3 lucky winners being presented with a fine bottle of wine from Fowles Winery. The winners were Nick Rodda, Bree Gedye and Sheryl Luxon. Around 3.30pm, we all departed onto the Hume Highway for a 90 minute drive back to Melbourne. A beautiful rainbow appeared to complete another ideal Porsche car club rally. 68

Run to Phillip Island Story: Aggie Ryan Photos: Aggie Ryan & Yannick Anderson Sunday 28th May 2017
Despite the cold, rainy start for the Winter Mid 911 Run to Phillip Island on the fourth Sunday of May, the atmosphere inside the starting point of the BP Outbound, at Officer was quite warm and jovial, and akin to a post Anzac Day march, minus the hip flask additives. To explain this further, as you know, starting an ageing car on a cold winter’s morning, and have it idle for a reasonable time to warm up, before easing it into gear without too many joint squeaks or twitches, then drive it with windows part way down to prevent fogging up the windscreen, and arrive at the first point of call without any warning lights appearing on the dash … well, THAT is a great start to the day. And hence why we were happy to be sipping coffee at a highway service centre, surrounded by other frozen, like minded Mid 911 enthusiasts, ready to face the rest of the day, and knowing as well, that the heaters and demisters had finally started to kick in. I should point out that there were a couple of newbie Porsches along for the drive as well that day. Our procession out of the service station looked like a striking rainbow of colours as we headed along the (M1) autobahn towards our first destination at Loch Village. And, as if on cue, the grey clouds parted and the sun shone in patches along our journey on the highway, and through the picturesque hills and valleys of the South Gippsland area. Our maps and road notes were very comprehensive, and that included a pre-drive briefing from Graeme Anderson, warning us about a stretch of twisty road that was hazardous when wet, and to definitely consider Plan B, if that was the case. Fortunately it was not, and the terrain definitely tested out the ride and handling 70

on the Mid 911s, and perhaps blew out some of the dust and cobwebs from under the engine lids, just a little. The Baw Baw ranges were shrouded in the distance, and place names like Drouin, Nar Nar Goon, Cannibal Creek, Jindivick, Korumburra and Poowong passed us by, as were it seems a growing number of organic farms specialising in strawberries, cheese, eggs, olives and wines, some with farm gate produce for sale, enticing us to perhaps revisit on another occasion. The rain had stopped, as we zipped through groves of pines with needles floating by, making it reminiscent of an early 80’s car ad, and probably more so when we passed a bunch of Aston Martins, at that particular moment. Cows and sheep were wrapped in their rugs and ugg boots, hay bales dotted lush green paddocks, and chimneys on country cottages were puffing out trails of smoke to signal a lazy morning for its occupants, who were possibly luxuriating by their fire, with a Sunday paper and hot chocolate in hand. Fortunately for us, our next stop at the Rustic Cacao Chocolate Factory in lovely little Loch, had delightful hosts, Alan and Diana, providing warm mugs of authentic hot chocolate, and maybe a cake or three for morning tea. Conversations began in earnest about the drive, the cars, the weather, Porsche track days, snippets of personal adjuncts, car repairs, that delicious (spiced) hot chocolate, the tasty products lining the café shelves, and more auto talk, of course. Forthwith, after taking over the village amenities, we journeyed on our way through more magnificent countryside towards the final stop, with vistas of lush hills, and distant wind turbines along the coast, making it especially distracting
for the map readers, actually, probably just me, trying to follow the route directions. I think only once, did our group veer off course. That said, we all managed to pass the allocated towns of Kongwak, Almurta and Dalyston before merging onto the highway passing through Kilcunda, where the sky turned overcast again, and drops of rain began. Phillip Island was in our sights, as we finally crossed the bridge at San Remo towards our lunch spot at The Cape Kitchen, situated right by the ocean at Newhaven. Conditions were blustery, and the water a heaving mass of dark grey energy. Along the coast Cape Woolamai and Pyramid Rock were obscured by winds from the Bass Strait pelting the rain hard against the large window panes. We sat impervious to this as the drama unfolded outside. Wait staff busied themselves taking drink orders from our group of thirty, who were keen to sample the menu offered for our lunch. The platters of salmon, chicken, salad and chips filled the tables and sated our appetites, we thought, until the platters of desserts arrived. Conversation and laughter filled our corner of the restaurant, until it seemed that time had crept up on us and it became apparent that the journey home was going to take longer, the more we continued to chat. The raffle draws for the two bottles of wine capped off what was a wonderful day with promises by most to catch up again at another run in the near future. The heavens were still pouring when everyone made a dash for their cars. So with heaters on, we left with quite a chill in the air, in fact, quite similar to how we started the day really.
