horizontally opposed Porsche Parade is quite a unique Club magazine in that it documents every single event the Club hosts. The Office bearers in charge of the three main entities in the club (Competition, Social and Registers) make sure that a story and photos are submitted to the Editor for each quarterly publication which I think as an amazing effort for a primarily volunteer organisation. For a walk down memory lane you can check out every magazine and newsletter produced since 1975 on our club website @ www.pcv.com.au
Welcome to the 200th Issue of Porsche Parade! This marks a fantastic acheivement and quite a milestone in the Club’s history. The first Club publication started way back in 1975 with a photocopied newsletter. The title “Porsche Parade” debuted in 1977 and back then your annual membership was only $10! We have had 12 Editors in the past 44 years since the clubs inception with Ken Foo being the very first, (Ken also became President in 1978 and Richard Batchelor did two stints) and at least half of the past Editors are still active Club Members today.

president’s message
Welcome to the winter edition of the best car club magazine in Australia. By the time you are reading this message, winter will thankfully be more than half way through. I can only say thank goodness as I’m sure that like me you found the weather in early July quite testing. Luckily these feelings all disappear as soon as I slide into the snug confines of my Cayman and its surefootedness inspires confidence whatever the conditions outside.
Competition is still doing very well this year and although we were a little disappointed with the entry numbers at the LiquiMoly Sandown360 6 Hour event at the end of April, entries at all our other events have been very strong. Even for those members who don’t want to risk damaging their precious vehicle, I would still encourage you to pop into a PCV track event. You will love the sight and sound of these great cars performing in their natural environment. This year we have organized some additional performance driver training courses which have proved very popular, so we will look at extending these next year.
You will all be pleased to know that PCV is moving forward from strength to strength. from race control This is the second from Race Control for 2019, which is proving to be a bumper year for competition. One of the Club’s premier competition events, the Liqui Moly Sandown 360 Regularity Relay, ran very successfully on 28 April. There is a feature article about the event in this magazine, and I draw your attention to two things: well-known Touring Car legend John Bowe (an entrant in the event) was on hand to present trophies to the placegetters, and the Porsche Club of Victoria ‘lock’ on the event was well and truly ‘picked’ by competitors from another Club! Once again, a video crew was on hand to capture the day and prepare a video documenting the event. Keep an eye out for an announcement on the web by email and Facebook that the video is available and check out this great event. The next event was a Sprint at Broadford. Once again, we had a large turnout with eight groups including entrée. Due to limitations of the track, groups were limited to a maximum of eight cars which worked very well. The
conditions seemed to suit our competitors with numerous personal bests achieved. The day saw very few incidents, break downs or accidents, meaning a great day was had by all. One of the important jobs at an event is Scrutineering. We need to check the cars to make sure they have their safety equipment and are fit to go onto the track. At Broadford we put out the call for drivers to help and they answered it magnificently. But we are always on the lookout for more help so if this interests you drop a note to Gordon Johnstone at marshals@pcv.com.au
you. Of course, the closest vantage point is trackside as one of our Marshals. And we are always on the lookout for more volunteers. Or you could just drop in and find out what it is all about. Contact me at motorsport@ pcv.com.au if you have any questions. See you at the track! Mark Horton Andrews Competition Director
Our most recent event was the Winton Winter Sprint on Sunday 23 June. It was disappointing that we were not able to offer the traditional motorkhana/sprint double header this year due to skid pan non-availability. However, we made the most of the Sprint day. After a brisk start (-1 degree!) the day turned into a beauty – sunny but cool. A full report will follow in the next edition of Porsche Parade. Our next event is Sandown Sprint on 28 July. Sandown Raceway is popular and for many of our members the closest of the tracks we visit. If you are thinking of joining us on the track for the first time, or you are a driver coming back, Sandown could be just the event for

The Social Committee has continued on in 2019 with some more innovative ideas. The Club Night at Porsche Cars Melbourne on the 16th April was an outstanding success with over 260 members in attendance to hear special guests Jim Richards and Peter Fitzgerald being interviewed by television identity Glenn Ridge, recalling their life in motor sport over the past years. Meals at the Club Night were a notch up in quality with plenty for all. The Autumn Run on Sunday 6th May to Phillip Island included breakfast and a talk on the history of Warburton Fire Brigade, finishing at the Cape Kitchen for lunch overlooking the ocean at Cape Woolamai. 80 members attended this Social Run. Preparations for the Annual Dinner at the Melbourne Sofitel Hotel on the Saturday night of the 7th December are progressing well. Save the date as we have a few surprises up our sleeve. The theme for the night is to be a “French Twist”; you work out what you might add to the night. The club will be organising the band to play early in the night some Parisienne music from the likes of Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour and other well-known French identities. We would like to see over 200 people at this special end of year event. Preparations are also progressing with the Annual Dinner for 2020, that will be held in the newly re-opened and refurbished Myer Mural Hall in the city, with the theme being a “Masked Ball” that is to celebrate our 45th anniversary of or our car club in Victoria. This venue had been closed for 16 years and has proven to be a very sought after venue for events like our Annual Dinner; hence the early booking of the venue. Again, we have asked one of our committee to provide an article to introduce themselves, this time from Vickie Morris who is also part of the Annual Dinner Sub-Committee. Deputy Director – Geoffrey Mould
To be honest I have been a member of several clubs for different reasons over the years. Ascot Park Calisthenics Club so I could wear fabulous costumes on stage. St Margaret’s Netball Club so I could annihilate the opposition while keeping fit. Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club to save lives and enjoy the scenery. Royal Chemists Society to improve my chances of graduating University. Flinders University Earth Science Club…. if you ever went to one of their “BBQs” you’d understand why. So when I was approached by Michael to write for Social Corner about PCV my first thoughts were “Yeah sure I can do that” – plug how great it is to be on the Club’s Social Committee. As I thought about it more, I realised just how much this does for me. This article may get a bit heavy so strap yourself in as we go on a little journey. My PCV Social Club Journey…. Why did I join PCV? It is my long awaited, life long right. Finally I bought a Porsche in my early 40s approximately 25 years after I first dreamt about it. Buying my car was nerve wracking. It caused sleepless nights and provoked ad hoc phone calls to family and friends for advice. Essentially put me out of my comfort zone. Joining PCV was the next immediate step. As humans we like to belong and I was looking forward to belonging to our club. Some may say it has a (misconceived) image of being a bunch of snobs but from Day 1 that was proven otherwise to me. Carly and Lisa provided friendly, inviting correspondence through my application process. I started participating in as many events as possible from then on. I am both introvert and extrovert but one of two of my core values are to try to be positive and help people. Joining the Social Committee gave me the opportunity to scratch a few of these itches. I attend (most) meetings when work doesn’t interfere. We discuss and action (the latter being important as who has time to sit around a table and bang on about not much ad naseum?) the Club’s Social Calender including Club Nights and Runs. Sub Committees are formed to ensure our meetings are kept concise. This year I am on the Annual Dinner Sub Committee which is quite convivial. Marshalling is another string to my very bent bow. Who would have thought I would be in such a privileged role? The excitement of the track alone is extremely rewarding. Enjoying passenger laps BEFORE lunch, announcing when Barb Darvall can’t, ticking off checklists and even occasionally organising Marshal snack baskets fills my day at the track plus many drivers and their teams are more than happy to share advice. Last year I was fortunate enough to interview our members at the Sandown Regularity.
Vickie Morris – Member of the Social Committee and the Annual Dinner Sub-Committtee. Who am I and why am I here at the Porsche Club of Victoria?
I attend Club Runs, Club Nights, do the odd presentation and even get media coverage of events when I can pull some strings. I once organised a club run which turned out to be quality not quantity and I met a great chick Kelly.
Why do I participate? Here are some more reasons; a. Why Not?! b. Adventure: Kane, my partner and I went to the Mt Cotton Porsche Driving Experience. I doubt this would have happened and been so much fun if I wasn’t part of the club. In May I attended two events in London with PCGB. It took me a little out of my comfort zone (Zone 2 actually) finding the venue. What a great sense of achievement once I found them. I saw some rare cars, met some wonderful people and ate some interesting British fare. c. Escape from my very different work environment. I spend time in the elements for work, doing so watching Porsches fly around a track is more tolerable. d. Apart from the meetings there aren’t any agendas. Members are more interested in having a good time and sharing their passion. e. Try new things. From writing articles to late braking. This is where you learn and feel alive. f. Avoid dementia and other age related diseases. Seriously. There are so many proven positives of connecting with people to stem said hideousity. It may appear time consuming but one can contribute as much as one can. The natural ebb and flow of volunteers is not judged but we do have your personal records so if you’re not putting in the effort we know where you live and will drag you out of bed pre dawn on a Sunday to scrutineer at Winton. Introducing myself has never been a hand brake for me. I mentioned I was a bit of an extrovert where really, when I think about it, I just like meeting people and hearing their stories. When I talk with club members I am often fascinated by their experiences and at the same time reminded to be grateful for the fortunate life I have. Our members are very inspiring. Some have been active club patrons for years during their busy lives. Being involved grants me the opportunity to give back. I have goals for my PCV such as race with my mate Dave, an overseas GP and upping my volunteer ante. The past 5 years being part of one of the most supportive and organised clubs has been so satisfying. It gives me purpose and fulfilment. If any of my article reasonates with you please don’t hesitate to chat with me about how you can get your PCV munificence going. You never know where it can take you. Thanks for reading. Cheers Vickie.

Club Night at Porsche Centre Melbourne Tuesday 16th April
OUR BIGGEST CLUB NIGHT EVER !!!
Jim Richards, Peter Fitzgerald and Glenn Ridge
Tuesday 16th April saw 270 plus members descend on Porsche Centre Melbourne for our April Club Night, and what a night it was to be !!! Themed as “The Porsche 968 Years – from a driver’s perspective” we were all in for a treat, with the club having invited Jim Richards and Peter Fitzgerald to recount their experiences with the 968 RS Turbo, ably hosted by our Master of Ceremonies for the night Glenn Ridge, who probed Jim’s and Peter’s experiences while competing in the last, and reputedly the best of Porsche’s front engined water cooled cars. Members commenced arriving around 6.00 pm (earlier than usual) having heard that over 260 members were going to be attending, everyone wanted to have a good seat, and tables filled quickly... and the next hour gave members the opportunity to view the new 992 Carrera S which was on display in the showroom, along with Jim and Peter’s 968 RS Turbo (now owned by Club Member – Craig Rayner).
everyone to our second club night of the year, while also acknowledging the Life Members who were present (Andrew Bonwick, Michael Browning, Barbara & Will Darvall, and Ian Knight). Following this we passed our portable microphones around to the 23 New Members present, inviting them to introduce themselves, and to detail the car/s that they own. We were also trying something new for our New Members on the night. As we had so many in attendance, we allocated three tables for them, and on each table we had allocated two Social Committee Members to host them on the night, to ensure that their first experience to our club was a memorable one, and to ensure that they were made to feel at home. New Member Introductions All of us have been a new member at some stage, however now the club has reached the size we have, it is important for all of us to ensure that our new members are made to feel welcome, and have someone to take the time to introduce them around. Based on the feedback that we have received this initiative was extremely well received by the new members present, and it is something that we will be doing at future club nights.
to our club night, and hinted at what a special night everyone in the room were about to enjoy. Tony also took the opportunity to acknowledge our Hall of Fame members present (Bruce Harris, Michael Browning, Jim Richards, Peter Fitzgerald, Rex Broadbent & Mark Chrzanowski) and he also outlined some of the events that were coming up on the Club Calendar. Porsche 992 Carrera S Presentation … Austin King
Dinner was next so members proceeded to the buffet stations positioned at each end of the showroom, and we spent the next half an hour or so, enjoying the food and drinks, along with friendly conversation with our fellow members. Club Night MC - Russell Sturzaker
Our night officially commenced at 7.00pm with event organiser Russell Sturzaker welcoming
Club President – Tony Carolan Club President – Tony Carolan was next to the microphone, where he welcomed everyone

Consultant – Austin King. Austin spent the next quarter of an hour updating members about the features and attributes of the new 992 Carrera S which was on display to club members for the very first time since its recent launch.
Jim Richards has a staggering 7 wins in the Bathurst 1000. (Falling just short of the King – Peter Brock) with Jim’s Bathurst 1000 victories coming in ‘72, ‘75, ‘78, ‘79, ‘80, ‘82, ‘83, ‘84 and ‘87. Eight-time Targa Tasmania Winner Along with Navigator Barry Oliver, Jim has amassed 8 Outright Wins at Targa Tasmania having won in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2006, was admitted into the Targa Tasmania - Hall Of Fame in 2007, while being made a Hall Of Fame – Legend in 2008.
Unmistakably committed to the Porsche design DNA, the 992 has a more muscular look, with an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor, the new 911 is timeless – and modern. Intelligent control and chassis elements as well as innovative assistance systems combine the masterfully uncompromising dynamism that the classic rear-engine 911 is famed for, with the demands of the digital world. Questions from the floor completed Austin’s presentation which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Feature Presentation - The Porsche 968 Years – from a driver’s perspective
Peter Fitzgerald is one of the best-credentialed production car racers Australia has ever seen. National Title & Championship Winner He has won three Australian National Titles (two Australian Production car crowns, the 1997 GT Championship, as well as a host of other endurance race successes, including the 1991 Bathurst 12 Hour, in which he co drove with Allan Grice and Nigel Arkell in Peter’s 1989 Australian Production Car Championship winning Toyota Supra Turbo, and in 1993 a 968CS driven by Peter and Brett Peters won the 1993 Sandown 6 Hour Race in the Australian Competition Debut of the Model.
Peter (with navigator Michael Mansour) was also the Outright Winner at the 1999 Targa Tasmania in a Porsche 993 Turbo.
Event Organiser Russell Sturzaker, took to the microphone again to introduce our guest speakers for the night, Jim Richards, Peter Fitzgerald, and our Presentation MC Glenn Ridge, but as Russell said “where do you start when introducing our presenters tonight”.
Glenn Ridge Glenn first became involved in television in 1980, when he joined TV8 in Central Victoria as the Host and Producer of a weekly one hour music video show titled “Breezin”. In 1985 he left both his radio career and commitments at TV8 to join BTV6 Ballarat (now WIN TV), and in 1989 Glenn left BTV6 to further develop his media company Q Media.

PORSCHE PARADE
This year, 2019, sees Glenn compete in his 27th Targa Tasmania, which in recent years has seen his son Oliver navigate for him in Glenn’s 1995 Mazda RX-SP (one of only 28) that Mazda manufactured in Australia. Russell then commented ….. “Something I should share with you all, is that when I was organising our guest presenters for tonight, both Porsche Centre Melbourne and our Display Car Owner – Craig Rayner, insisted on us guaranteeing them that we would not allow Glenn to say ”Let’s Go Shopping!!” “While PCM General Manager Piero Pellegrini was also said to be concerned that Glen might slip back to “and now here’s Austin in the Gift Shop”
Well let’s start with Jim!
Seven-time Bathurst 1000 Winner
Glenn has a passion for cars and racing, and over the last 20 or so years he has been a regular competitor in a wide variety of motoring events including Targa Tasmania, (where in 2007 he joined Jim and Barry Oliver in being inducted into the Targa Tasmania - Hall Of Fame while also being made a Hall Of Fame – Legend in 2008.)
Peter Fitzgerald

Jim Richards
Then in April 1991, in what many saw as a surprise announcement, Glenn joined Jo Bailey as the new host of the Nine Networks prime time quiz show ‘Sale of the Century’, taking over from Tony Barber and Alyce Platt. Glenn held this role for 11 years which made him the longest serving host of “Sale”.
Glenn has also competed in the Australian Safari and numerous other events including Classic Adelaide, Rally Tasmania, Perth’s Targa West, Mt Buller Sprint and the Dutton Rally series - just to name a few.
Outright Winner - Targa Tasmania Fiberglass panels, lexan windows and 350+Hp make this a very quick car!
and ‘75 years of Ford Australia’) and 6 series of The Car Show and The Boat Show.
Through Q Media Group, Glenn has hosted and been Executive Producer of 14 documentaries based on Outback Australia, 2 motoring docos, (‘Ford GT - The Legend’,
At this point Glenn chipped in with “I think that I am the one who has drawn the short straw, accepting to be your host tonight, as previously I have been used to working with three of television’s most beautiful ladies (Jo Bailey, Nicky Buckley and Karina Brown). Glenn then lead off our night by asking Fitzy, about his involvement with the 968 RS Turbo in Australia. Due to the factory only building three 968 Turbo RS’s and with none of these being imported into Australia, between 1992 and 1996 Fitzgerald Racing Services sought the assistance of the Porsche Motorsports Department to build four right hand drive “Race/Road” versions using genuine factory RS parts and Australian delivered Porsche 968 CS chassis.
Rayner (owner of Jim and Peter’s 968 RS Turbo) for making his car available to us, and having it delivered to PCM for our night. • PCV Social Committee Members, Alison Belot, Tony Carolan, Alvaro Del Gallo, Maria Del Gallo, Vickie Morris, Geoff Mould, Michael O’Brien, Garry Saber, Russell Sturzaker and Melanie Treloar, along with Lois Saber, Vicki Sturzaker and others who assisted on the night • PCV Administrators – Carly Pasco and Lisa Gillespie Each car cost in excess of AU$225,000 to build and they were customised to suit the specific requirements of the first owners. Two of these cars were raced extensively, #1 by Peter Fitzgerald and #4 by Graham Lloyd, George Bradbury and Deryck Graham, and the first of these was the car on display on the night which is now owned by Craig Rayner, here are some of the details that Craig provided for an article on his 968 Turbo RS in Porsche Parade back in 2008.. Questions flowed well into the night, but at 9.00pm our night came to an end following what had truly been one of our Best Club
Nights ever, and one that will be remembered, and talked about, for quite some time!! Thank You’s Special nights like this do not just happen though, and we would particularly like to thank the following people for helping to make this event such a great success …….
In May 2007, browsing Rob Raymer’s RSR Services website, there it is! A quick call and numerous text messages later, “I will be there in the morning.”
• Our Sponsors - Porsche Cars Australia, Porsche Centre Melbourne, Traction Tyres & Auto, & Nillumbik Cellars.
• Firstly to Our Guest Speakers - A big thank you to Jim Richards, Peter Fitzgerald and Glenn Ridge for agreeing to come and speak to us. • 968 Turbo RS Display Vehicle - A special thank you to fellow club member Craig
IT”S MINE!!
Porsche 968 Turbo RS Replica
• Porsche Centre Melbourne Team - headed by Piero Pellegrini – General Manager, Kate Holcombe – Marketing Manager, Dean Williams (New Vehicle Sales Manager), and Austin King – New Vehicle Sales Executive
And what do you do with a car like this? You give it what it deserves. A full makeover: back to Falken tyres green and blue paintwork (faster than red), new trim, wheels, rubbers (for the car), detail and few personal touches. I now have my dream realized! What a fantastic racing history! Starting life as a 968CS M030 for production races and then developed by Peter Fitzgerald to authentic RS Turbo specifications from Porsche Germany. •1993 Sandown 6 hour winner •1993 and 94 Bathurst 12 hour podium finishes.
•Porsche Cup placing at the last Adelaide G.P and the first Melbourne G.P •Dutton Grand Prix rallies. •Years of Targa Tasmania rallies in the hands of both Peter Fitzgerald and Mark Connolly. •Targa Tasmania 1995 - described as the drive of the event Peter was running in the top 5 on the second day when they punctured, dropping to 160th out of 232 starters. They raced through the field to finish an incredible 5th outright on the last day! Thanks to Fitzy’s belief and development of this car, I now have the ultimate 968. I think RS now stands for RATHER SPECIAL! Extract from Porsche Parade No 155_2008_Issue 1 ISSUE 2, 2019

Annual Go Kart Challenge Thursday 23rd May 2019
The long running Porsche Club Annual Go Kart Challenge was another hit with the attendees yet again. I believe its success is due to the ever evolving format and location as the organisers and staff consider new and better strategies. This year’s challenge was held on 23rd May with regular faces and also new faces ready for the contest ahead. After the safety briefing the new format was introduced. This year teams of two would go out for the first session onto the open and dynamic track to achieve the fastest lap time. This information is collated and positions recorded from fastest to slowest.
After positioning the grid the main race started as all drivers fought for the front position. There were many battles between karts and a few spin outs by over eager drivers. Changing drivers added to the excitement as only four carts were able to enter Pit Lane at one time. Conditions on the night were perfect for the karts so we were able to achieve fast lap times which was achieved by Robert Baird with a time of 39.572. The winning teams were:
2nd Place: ‘Polish Connection’ Wojtek and Daniel Laskowski – 39.807 3rd Place: ‘Giordini Cooper Racing’ Justin Neglar and Matthew Farrell – 39.916 Maybe the food and drink disadvantaged the power to weight ratio on some drivers as Robin Puc still holds the PCV record from 2014. Thank you to all the attendees and to Ace Karts for a well organised event and we look forward to next year.
1st Place: ‘Brap Team’ Robert and Tim Baird – 39.572

Club Night at Porsche Centre Doncaster Tuesday 18th June
With Guest Presenter Dean Sammut of Evolve Driving Porsche Centre Doncaster was home for our third and most recent Club Night on Tuesday 18th June at which 136 members were in attendance. The format of the evening followed our usual programme of socialising with finger food and drinks, presentations, meeting new members, and hearing about competition results, social news and coming events. Following discussions within the Social Committee on how we can improve and vary our club night’s, it was decided to try a different tack on the night where on arrival attendees were welcomed at the door by members of the social committee, offered a drink from the bar, and from here they were directed into the room where our caterers had prepared a table made up of antipasto appetisers to start off our night. This was accepted extremely well with everyone present, and conversations flowed while partaking of this superb savoury spread.
Next it was time to introduce our Special Guest Speaker for the evening, Dean Sammut of Evolve Driving.
Russell Sturzaker, our MC for the night, then took to the microphone and welcomed everyone to our June Club Night, along with recognising a Life Member present in Andrew Bonwick. Russell then asked each of the five new members to introduce themselves to the gathering, while also advising which model Porsche they drive. Seven o’clock soon arrived and it was time for dinner to be served, in line with our desire to try something different on the night, the social committee had the caterers provide a selection of dishes already plated, and as the night was a stand up affair, this format worked well, and was also well received by those present. Following dinner Russell invited members to join us in the seating area, where Club President – Tony Carolan welcomed members to our night, and then gave a brief update on some upcoming events, along with a few things that the general committee were currently looking into on behalf of members. Guest Presenter Dean Sammut of Evolve Driving
Evolve Driving is a professional driver training provider with programs ranging from Defensive Road Safety, Performance Driving, One-On-One Race Driver Coaching and Corporate Drive Day events. They conduct Performance Driving events at venues across Australia including Phillip Island, Sandown, Winton, Tasmania and Bathurst, and the Club has worked with Evolve Driving to create a package to encourage members of all levels, and particularly members who are newer to the track, to invest in improving their driving under professional supervision. It is the best way to improve your driving before you even get in the car! Dean is a seasoned motorsport instructor able to analyse, articulate and demonstrate optimum driving techniques, and his presentation was designed to entertain and educate about maximising your Performance Driving, and over the course of the next 45 minutes, while he spoke about the concept behind Evolve Driving and why he decided to form the company, he also covered the following topics: • Motorsport techniques • Driver preparation for an event • The mental side of Performance driving • Driver resources A question and answer session followed, after which we all thanked Dean for his informative and entertaining presentation.

Workshop Technical Presentation by Porsche Centre Doncaster
• PCV Social Committee Members, Melanie Treloar, Vickie Morris, Geoff Mould, Michael O’Brien, Tony Carolan, change to Garry Saber & Anna Cook.
Following Dean’s presentation, we invited Porsche Centre Doncaster - General Manager, Flavio Parletta to the microphone, where Flavio gave members a very informative update on the next Porsche models to be introduced into our market, along with some of their individual standout features and approximate arrival time in Australia.
Flavio then went on to announce their special feature for the night, that of four Workshop Presentation Sessions to be run concurrently across their workshop floor. Prior to our arrival, PCD staff had set up the four corners of the workshop, with a particular facet of interest to members, and each of these areas were manned by Porsche Centre Doncaster Technicians ably supervised by Workshop Manager – Liam Bennett. One area covered, was Hybrid Technology, and in this area a new Cayenne eHybrid was available to crawl over and under with questions being answered by one of the PCD Hybrid specialists. Another was that of race preparation, and in this area they had a customer’s GT4 which was having race prep wheel alignment along with setting up corner weights for the track, while another was dedicated to Classic Porsche with the inclusion of a 1973 911 2.4s.
• PCV Administrators – Carly Pasco and Lisa Gillespie

All of this while also being able to partake in a few more drinks, along with more of the antipasto appetisers, and a few many courses that were left over from dinner. It wasn’t long before it was 9.30 and time for our night to close, but not before we heard briefly from Social Director – Michael O’Brien, who on behalf of both the Social and General Committee, thanked everyone for attending, along with a special thank you to the Porsche Centre Doncaster Team headed up by General Manager Flavio Parletta and Group Marketing Partner – Krissy Mclean for providing to both their assistance, and the use of their facility for the night.
• Porsche Centre Doncaster Team - headed by Flavio Parletta, • Our Sponsors - Porsche Cars Australia, Traction Tyres & Auto, & Nillumbik Cellars. A fabulous night was had by all who those who attended, and we look forward to you joining us at our next Special Club Night, which is to be held at Lorbek Luxury Cars on Tuesday 27th August, with Special Guest Presenter – Rusty French.
Thank You’s A special night like this does not just happen though, and we would particularly like to thank the following people for helping to make our night such a great success …….

Ben Westover Lovers of Guards Red rejoice, others grin and bear it, all sit down, and enjoy a great collection. Ben Westover is a young man who has only been a PCV member since 2017, but has collected Porsches for many years. It sounds as though his powerful expression of the petrol head gene came from his dad, who is into Austin Healeys, having one with a Ford V8, fitted into a Healey Factory widened body, having previously had a 993 Carrera S. Growing up, he was a Ford man, with an EA Falcon, an XR6, a BA GT, and others. There was a Nissan 200 SX, utes, a Hilux and now an Amarok VW ute daily driver. First notable car is a ‘67 Cooper S, still in the stable, but not home on this shoot. After falling in love with the G Series as a boy, his first Porsche was a 1980 SC turned into a ‘73 RS clone; he knew where to start shooting! So to Ben’s current exquisite collection, presented equal to the best condition Ron and I have seen, in our 10th year of WIYG? Paint quality and finish is unsurpassed, doors shut with perfect satisfaction and perfect gaps on perfect rubbers. Too complimentary? You can learn a lot about a car and its life from its doors. Interiors are mostly like new, many helped by low distance travelled. Ben does the car care very thoroughly, with The Healey Factory taking care of paint and Auto Coupe or PCM looking after the mechanicals. They all live pampered lives in the huge basement car park of a gracious late 1800’s home. No driving needed to the factories where you hired space! He pragmatically buys older cars with the renovation completed, to avoid surprises and unseen costs. The Porsches in chronological order over 58 years: A ‘61 356B Aetna blue 1600 Super, with a red interior and 75 hp. Nothing to say; it’s like brand new! An ‘81 3.3 Turbo (needs no more detail for anybody in the car universe) Guards Red, with 300 hp, an unusual light grey woven Berber upholstery and only 25K kms. Third story in a row with one of these, suggesting that many are coveted.
ISSUE 2, 2019
33
Also an ‘81 924 Carrera GT in Guards Red, with 210 hp and elegant black upholstery with a fine orange stripe, sunroof delete, A/C and only 8000 miles. 406 were made, with 75 in RHD, and none sold here (hence the Pommie speedo).
A taste of US muscle.
An ‘85 Carrera in (yep) Guards Red, with a whale tail, after market exhaust and only 42K kms. Last year of the iconic 231 hp engine.
A’70 Cuda, with a 512, (only 8 1/2 litres), 5 speed and equally good interior. These cars could go like a shell, with huge torque, but couldn’t stop, go around corners. or restrain you if they did. Even ‘70 911s had soft suspension, with huge body roll. It took a long time to realise that occupants were only sitting on a kitchen table, unless securely restrained in wrap around seats with multi-strap belts. Development of tyres, brakes and suspension forced those changes, as previously unimaginable stopping and cornering forces became possible.
An ‘89 944 Turbo in (yep), with S options, 250 hp, MO30 suspension options, A/C and (wait for it) 118 K kms. Hence it shows some internal upholstery patina. A car that has been slow to have its value appreciated. An almost new 991 GT2 RS, with its GR hidden somewhat by black bonnet panels, carbon fire roof panels, various duct openings and design tweaks, in what is Porsche’s ultimate road car so far. It has the Weissach pack, which includes an unobtrusive grey Titanium roll cage, the roof and other interior enhancements. There are 700 lusty ponies, pushing 1400 kg through RWD, punishing 325/30 21 Pilot Sport 2 tyres, while the 265/35 20s just go for the ride up front. How does that power get through the traditional 2WD? Ben loves the car, but freely admits that the various nannies look after him. He had a 997 GT3 RS in Orange (very pretty), which he liked very much, and a 991 GT3 RS in Lava Orange. What else?
34
A nice E28 M5 in Diamond Schwartz, with a 2.5 straight 6, putting out about 260 hp. Only 187 in RHD, PORSCHE not imported here, so a UK import. PARADE
A ‘70 Chevelle, with a 572 cube donk (9 1/2 litres!), auto, in an elegant shiny grey with excellent interior.
A ‘16 Cayenne diesel, very neat in polished black, with the same engine as the Amarok, does the family duties. This young man on a knowledgeable mission has another 40 years or so to enhance his collection of cars, which are mostly keepers, in a garage which could display double the number. Ron and I will revisit in another 20 years. Can’t wait! Disclaimer: Very little money changed hands in the writing of this article.

The 10th running of the Liqui Moly Sandown 360 Regularity Relay was very successfully held on Sunday 28 April. Around 10:30am one car from each of the 26 teams moved onto the Track behind the Safety Car each with the aim of keeping one of their cars on track for the next six hours – easier said than done for some teams. We once again enjoyed the support of Liqui Moly and this year they provided a spectacular sponsor arch on the starting grid. 360 refers to the total minutes of driving time i.e. six hours! The Regularity Relay is not a race, but it is very competitive. The aim is to achieve lap times as close as possible to the self-nominated time for each driver. The winning team averages closest to this target across all drivers (comprising 4–6 per team). This event favours the most consistent drivers, not the fastest, and certainly not the most aggressive. This year, we arranged with the Marque Sports Car Association of Victoria to use their Saturday event to provide an hour of practice. This also meant earlier entry, vehicle scrutiny, and the ability to set up for the event the next day. The event was also part of the new ‘Victorian Regularity’ series, involving two of Australia’s biggest regularity events. The Liqui Moly Sandown 360 Regularity Relay formed the first round, with the second being the Victorian 6Hour Relay at Phillip Island on 27-28 July. The series winner will be the best performed team across the two events. By 4:30pm the magical six hours was up, and the officials in the Control Tower counted down the last ten seconds. Another great event done and dusted. Well known Touring Car legend John Bowe (an entrant in the event) kindly agreed to present trophies to the placegetters and spoke very warmly about the driving behaviour of all competitors. It was very generous of John to support the event the way he did. Congratulations to the winning team ‘Beauty and the Beasts’ from Gippsland Car Club, Second placed ‘Team SUCC’ from Swinburne University Car Club and Third placed ‘Team Porsche SpecialistSKI’ from the host Porsche Club of Victoria. Many thanks to Liqui Moly Australia who have supported this event for a very successful 5 years.
Congratulations to the Liqui Moly Sandown 360 Regularity Relay organising committee for delivering a great event. Thanks to Tony Carolan, Andrew Bonwick, Grant Stephenson, and Gordon Johnstone from Porsche Club, as well as Dirk Van Heer (Liqui Moly), Winners are grinners! ‘Beauty and the Beasts’ from Gippsland Car Club Danny Jonas, and Bruce Astbury (Marque Sports Car Association). PORSCHE PARADE 42
We share two perspectives of the event: firstly, a Porsche Club Competitor, and secondly a member of the winning ‘Beauty and the Beasts’ team. Daniel Reynolds, how many PCV Regularities have you entered? Four or maybe five I am not sure. How did you and your team members come together? We originally started as competitors with similar cars from B and C class. The Liqui Moly Sandown 360 Regularity Relay gave us the opportunity to collaborate and compete on the same team. We have always had a ‘fun first’ approach, and in the first couple of years we didn’t even realise we were competitive until later in the day. What do you like about the event? The team spirit and being able to collaborate with your class competition. Everyone contributes during the day with organisation, food, drinks, timing etc. How did you find conditions on the day? Conditions worked out well, however the wet conditions at the start of the day meant that we had to adjust our strategy. This was a good twist that kept everyone on their toes. How would you rate your team’s performance on the day? That is a hard one to answer as we had to consciously make a choice on our goal for the day. We decided to maximise our class points at the expense of a team win. The new scoring system made it hard to achieve both objectives. Do you have any other comments? Overall, a great day and I was encouraged to see non-Porsche teams on the podium for a change. An insight from Gordon Dowthwaite, member of the winning ‘Beauty and the Beasts’ team: When I was younger and participated in sports car and formula vee racing, many people wondered why I would bother when I didn’t have the equipment and funds to win. They seemed oblivious to the notion that honing your skills to drive a car on its limits and competing on the track is a fantastic way to spend any day. There can be few better ways to enjoy your car, a day with your friends and the challenge of competition that the Porsche Club’s Liqui Moly Sandown 360 Regularity Relay. I found team Regularity Relays in 2008 and have since competed at events at Phillip Island, Winton and Sandown in a variety of teams. I love that Regularity Relay events allow cars of such disparity as my Toyota Corolla and Porsche Cup cars to complete on an even playing field – its more about driver skill than how good the car is, yet everyone
gets to enjoy their own car at their own level. I love the competition, the strategies and that even with a low budget, I have a chance to show my skill. I love the teamwork and the way that over the years we’ve seen our skills improve and young drivers develop. Our team for 2019, Beauty and the Beasts, is a mixture of skill and experience. I’ve had some race experience and 20 Regularity Relay events under my belt. Derek Wilks has shared many of these events with me, including 3 trophies at Phillip Island and 3rd place at last year’s Sandown 360. Gordon McPhee and his
business, Leongatha Automotive Services, has been a long-time contributor to the team and joined as a driver 3 years ago – he is learning different driving skills to those he used as a speedway driver in his youth. The newest member of the team is my daughter, Jayne – the Beauty of the team. Jayne has competed in club Khanacross events since she was 13 and been the Regularity team’s chief timekeeper and pit signaller for 5 years. She had her first driving experience of the big circuits in 2018 and has eagerly anticipated being a team driver. She
has certainly proved her worth as the best performing driver of the team and one of the best in the event – a proud moment for a Dad. The Porsche Club of Victoria’s Sandown 360 Regularity Relay is a great way to go for a Sunday drive and enjoy your car in a way that can never happen on the road. The Competition Committee and volunteers are to be congratulated for an exceptionally well run and safe event. All the drivers are to be commended for their conduct to safely compete with cars of such different speed and capability.

On arrival at the Warburton Fire Brigade, Autumn Run Organiser Geoffrey Mould warmly greeted everyone and then we all enjoyed a delicious breakfast of warm pastries, scones and savouries provided by the CFA volunteers. Captain Hazel Clothier representing the Fire Brigade thanked the PCV for its support by way of a donation and then presented to us a history of the Warburton Fire Brigade over their 100 plus years in operation, and as a momento provided a book to Geoffrey of the ‘Fire Storm Black Saturday Tragedy’. Geoffrey thanked her and advised that the PCV were keen to revisit on one of our future regular runs. Newbie members were introduced and welcomed by our president Tony Carolan, namely, Sally and Nicholas Ott together with Jason Whitling and partner Catherine Pascoe. Newbie members provide their names and the type of Porsche they are driving on the day. The convoy set off for the first leg from the Fire Brigade at 10:00am in sunny weather and headed to Yarra Junction, Neerim and Powelltown, travelling through stringy bark forests each side of a road with plenty of tight bends. After Neerim South the landscape opened with farms and all the way to Drouin where members stopped for rest and coffee.
The second leg we headed towards Korumburra which was perfect for Porsche driving. Following James Kelly’s Macan GTS, it perfectly took the tight bends with ease and sat comfortably on the road. Although heavier, its 8.9 litre per 100km fuel consumption compares with Boxster S and Carrera GT. Impressive! From Nojee to Loch across undulating hills gave wonderful views of the cars traversing the countryside. Nearing Bass Highway light rain showers and road works demanded slower driving. However crossing the bridge to Philip Island the sunshine returned. We arrived at The Cape Kitchen our lunch venue and looked forward to our complimentary drink that was served from the bar. Looking out through the windows from inside the restaurant were wide sweeping views of the wild ocean. I joined Lindsay and Wayne St.Baker chatting to Sally and Nicholas Ott dissussing ‘car harmony’, i.e. reading the odometer and the notes; not just following the car in front…… etc! Later, one of our members admitted she never followed the notes, saying, ‘I got us lost again today. That makes it two years in a row!’. Lunch mains included shared platters of Roasted Duck Breast, Roasted Atlantic Salmon and Braised Lamb Shoulder, together with side bowls of confit potatoes and rocket
salad. Desserts were a selection of Flourless Orange Cake, Rasberry Macaron and Pear Crumble Tart to finish our feasting. The staff at Cape Kitchen were most pleasant and the service, seamless. Geoffrey Mould thanked the staff and acknowledged the attendance of past presidents John King, Andrew Bonwick and Will Darvill. The door prize raffle was then drawn; congratulations to our winners: Chett Beavis, Rob Rogers and Rod Raywood, each receiving a bottle of Mornington Peninsula red wine to take home. The run home was warm and sunny. Perfect for the Cabriolets and Boxsters! A big thank you to Geoffrey Mould and Jane Hallam for the initial logistics of the route to be taken, and the directions instructions. Also thanks to Vickie Morris and Grant Penrose for doing the check run. Feedback comments received on the day agreed an ‘Excellent Run’ with a well planned route and well suited to all Porsches assembled, generally using the back roads that were mostly clear of other traffic.

There was a big turnout on the day with eight groups including entrée; which is the biggest number of cars I remember ever seeing at Broadford. Due to the size of the track, groups were limited to a maximum of 8 cars. Entrée is the group for beginner drivers who want to test what it is like to do motor sport or just see how their car goes on a racetrack. It is a great initiative with an experienced driver mentoring the entree driver to understand the circuit and what it is like. It has been becoming very popular recently with the club needing to limit numbers at some events. The Clerk of the Course, Mark Horton Andrews strongly emphasized at the driver’s briefing the Track License condition of no overtaking between turns 5 and 12. I think it finally sunk in, as I was not aware of any competitor being spoken to, unlike in the previous years’ sprints. Even though the track started wet from the rain overnight and it was quite cold, the track grip was good. Most competitors I spoke to were happy with the conditions with some personal bests achieved, including my own. We were warned not to go off the shiny stuff, as the offtrack was very muddy, and it would be frowned upon (by the motorbike riders) if we got dirt on the track. It must have worked, (or nobody wanted to wash their car afterwards) as we were all well behaved; and except for a couple of minor incidents, cars stayed on the track. And best of all, there were no on-track break downs or accidents, so it was a great day all up.

Class: OTHER Tom Marks
This was our first visit to Broadford this year, and due to rain on Saturday night and the weather forecast I can say I arrived in the morning a bit apprehensive. Broadford is not the place to be when it is raining, as we found out last year. It’s a small, tight track, which was built for motorbikes, so handling is at a premium. Anyway, the weather gods smiled on us and the rain stayed away.

Joseph Ensabella in Open class was fastest on the day doing a time of 0.58.89 seconds; which was just .02 seconds off the track record. Provisional results on the day were: A Class: Simon Zettl (Cayman R) finished first, ahead of Josef Smith and Bill Toohey in Cayman S’s.

This is a very competitive group and it will be a close fight till the end of year. B Class: Won by Danny Loypur (Cayman 987) in his first drive with his new car. He beat Daniel Reynolds in a 911 Carrera, who is currently leading this class. C Class: Simon Dunn in a 911 SC finished ahead of Jake Parsons in a Boxster and Cameron Goodyear in 911 SC. This is Simon’s first run in his old 911 SC since he retired his 911 GT3 after a little incident at Haunted Hills. Good to see him back. D Class: John Kennedy in a 944 S2 finished ahead of Garry Voges in another 944 S2 and Philip Cox in a 911 SC. Class numbers seem to be down this year with some competitors moving to newer machines, but it is still very competitive, with John just ahead of Philip year to date. GT Class: Stefan Wojciechowski (991 GT3) finished ahead of Richard Thompson and Peter Harrison in a pair of 996 GT3’s. With many competitors, and a number of subcategories it will be interesting to see who finishes on top at year-end. MO Class: Porsche racing veteran Peter Fitzgerald in a Boxster S finished ahead of Michael Herrod in a 993 RS and David Turner in a 944 S2. Ben Faggetter class leader didn’t make it this time. In Cup Class Andy Hall (997 Cup Car) came home in front of Simon Baxter (996 Cup Car) and reigning Club Champion Jamie Lovett was third. Open Class: As mentioned previously Joseph Ensabella in his 997 GT Cup car, just pipped Nick Karnaros in his 991 GT3 and Sally Anne Hains in her 997 Turbo, while nearly breaking Nick’s track record. This is probably the smallest group, but it is always close. Finally, I’d like to thank all the volunteer Officials, Marshals, Scrutineers and timing who make these events possible and allow us competitors to go and have an incident free day. Also like to thank Emergency Response Services and WAP Motorsport who are there if things do go wrong, which luckily this time, nothing did. Next up Winton!

Mid Week
Day Out to Holgate Brewhouse Woodend Story by Warwick Phillips Photos by Ken Anson & Warwick Phillips Wednesday 29th May The Phillips’ Cayman with Holgate’s in the background
The weather report for today threatens 6 degrees that would feel like 2, gales, showers and possible hail. Worse in the east. Great I thought, we are heading west! – can cope with all but hail. Our meeting point was at the Rockbank BP for 10:00am intro’s, catch up, coffee and briefing by the very well-prepared Michael Bailey. At 10:45 we were off – the showers holding off until the moment we all got into our cars; with Carlo and daughter Sarah leading the group in his very practical “other vehicle”, the black Audi RS4. The Porsche pack consisted of a number of Boxsters, a Cayman or two and several later model 911’s. It was also nice to see Michael’s club registered blue Beetle as part of the convoy. In all, 22 PCV members including partners/ navigators and 15 vehicles. The first leg had us joining the Western Highway for 7kms to the Gisborne turn-off; we’ll call this the “transit” stage and it came complete with dark blue Fords jumping out on a couple of us and / or creating a slow-moving mobile chicane 56
PORSCHE PARADE
(at least for Ken and Harriet). I won’t mention the numerous roundabouts. Once through the Gisborne Old and New, things brightened up a fair bit, the country road to Woodend had us feeling we could stretch our motoring legs a bit more. Weather improving and Porsches happy. We got our first look at Woodend’s Holgate Brewhouse, which would be our final destination as we started our big loop via Kyneton. This took us past the impressive Rowthorn family’s Woodside Park thoroughbred stud at Tylden and onto Kyneton where the lovely bluestone railway station greeted us – a slice of restored Gold Rush era architecture built in the mid-1800’s and still looking very solid and imposing. We joined the Calder freeway after another roundabout! For a quick run up to Malmsbury. When I say joined the Calder, some missed the turn (me) and took a little bit of backtracking to re-join. I subsequently discovered I wasn’t the only one. My very dedicated navigator just added 2.5kms to each of Michael’s odo km’s notations
for the remainder of the trip. Once through Malmsbury we were on a great open straight bit for quite a way until turning off towards Trentham Falls and Trentham. Nice Porsche country; twisty , forestry ( Wombat State Forest to the right ) a series of dips and turns – careful over the little bridge - all to keep us awake when in fact hunger pains were now setting in. Nevermind, Woodend was within sight. Holgate Brewhouse welcomed us for lunch and we enjoyed the various brews and excellent menu. The Brewhouse as the name suggests incorporates a state-of-the-art brewing facility, restaurant, bar and accommodation, all within the historic Woodend central hotel. Much car talk over lunch of course and Neil Drew kindly stood up and offered a vote of thanks to Michael Bailey for organising the day. A sentiment all of us echo in support of all the time and effort Michael regularly gives. Another great mid-week run. Home as the heavens opened for a late afternoon soaking but no hail - at least not on us.

Early Morning Run to Malmsbury Story: Chris Mason Photos: Robin Humphries Sunday 7th April 2019
The GT3/RS register members are known for their stoicism and asking them to be at Calder Raceway by 7:15 AM proved to be a major test of that stoicism. For those in the south eastern suburbs it meant a 5:30 AM start to the day. Having the Bolte Bridge closed for a fun run tested the register members time management and planning skills. A total of 14 people in eight cars passed the test with flying colours. Register Captain Greg Humphries demonstrated his leadership skills with a briefing in McDonald’s on the planned route, waypoints, public conveniences, and, essential for this register, the need to be a role model for the club in sticking to the speed limit and providing courtesy to other road users. He announced that Robin Humphries was the official photographer for the day and I volunteered to write up the report. This was the first of three planned GT3/RS register events for 2019, this being the early morning run, to be followed by a lunch run and finally an early evening dinner run later in the year. Greg Humphries and Linley Baxter had done a test run of the route only two days prior and were confident that the run would be moderately challenging but very enjoyable. The best runs seem to be where the roads limit the top speed and test the handling of the cars ensuring everyone stays within the speed limit. Fellow GT3/RS register members, Allan and Kerry Hines, were the subject matter experts for the 58
PORSCHE PARADE
route. They knew and recommended some quiet, challenging, and fun roads within the Ballarat, Bendigo, and Melbourne triangle. The perfect weather meant these roads could be navigated well within the safety limits of our cars. The cars all proved to be more than up to the task. The Porsche marque was well represented with a 964 cabriolet (Vicki and David), Boxster S (new members Ian and Linda), Cayman (Dean), 991.1 GT3 RS (Neil), two 991.2 GT3’s (David and Kathy; Linley and Helen), 996 4S (Greg and Robin), and a McLaren 650S (Chris and Bailey). Showing lots of confidence new members Ian and Linda led the way heading north on the Calder Freeway for a short distance before heading towards Diggers Rest then through Toolern Vale and Gisborne. From Gisborne it was on the back road to Mount Macedon with all the roads very quiet with the local residents enjoying an extra hour of sleep due to the end of daylight saving. The next stop was Lancefield and our rest break at Lancefield Park. A rest stop and a chance to chamois off the bugs from the first half of the run kept everyone busy. One young Porsche fan rode his bike over to inspect the cars and to compare them to his dad’s Nissan Navarra. Car people are car people no matter what they drive. A future member of the Porsche Club of Victoria no doubt.
The chilly morning encouraged us to make it a quick break and then we headed onto the Burke and Wills track with some twists and turns and ups and downs to challenge the drivers and their navigators. Hazards included motorbikes, cyclists and even a dog in the middle of the road at one point. I forgot to check whether the last driver through noticed whether the dog was still there after eight PCV cars had just missed him! I got the impression that eating dead rabbits off the road early in the morning was his normal ritual. We circled the outskirts of Kyneton and then taking the Kyneton-Metcalfe Road to Elphinstone then Taradale we arrived in Malmsbury a respectable 2.5 hour journey from the Calder Raceway. The Moto Bean Café were expecting us and provided great coffee and food for the hungry register members. With a few wrong turns taken by unnamed drivers there was plenty to chat about and, as usual, the fellowship proved to be equal to the driving enjoyment. A great day due to good organising, great weather, and roads perfect for any and all Porsches. Other registers are encouraged to repurpose this run even if not with a 7:30 AM kick-off!

Run to Fowles Winery Story: Anna Cook Photos: Roger Vella & Julie Mason Sunday 19th May 2019
The 993/964 Register Run met at Mc Donald’s Balwyn where Roger Vella welcomed everyone and introduced new members Tom Kyritsis & Aphrodite, and Jeffrey & Gail Knight. Good to see Sue and John Davis (also members of the PC Tasmania) in their 1990, dashing-red 994 with savvy number plate Tas964. Also Natalie Griss in her immaculate 2009 Boxster, on her second- ever Run. Nine cars set off on a calm, sunny morning and drivers enjoyed an easy run to Eltham after which the road narrowed with tight bends requiring concentration. Arriving at Kinglake we coincidentally saw the PCV Modern 911s parked for their coffee break. After 40 minutes we arrived in Wandong for our break, at the Railway Café….well most of us …! After a head count, Roger Vella realised Richard Waters was missing and went outside to call him and learnt he had stopped at Kinglake and realising it was 911s, decided to join them. Reminder - it’s not the odometer number that counts but where it takes you..! Just then Roger and I saw an unlikely sight: that of sheep also on an early morning run, cross the main street headed to the rear of the Café. We could only conclude it had strayed from the 60
PORSCHE PARADE
Bo-Peep Register and was looking for the baa-th room! (Ahem) After Wandong we took the Epping- Kilmore Road - a wide, quiet road to be enjoyed at maximum speed. At Lancefield we discovered a town distinguished by historic buildings of the 1850’s gold-rush era. A scenic road winding north for 29 km then took us to Tooborac with contrasting views; in fact a batholith landscape dotted with giant granite rock intrusions (once volcanic magma) and with an underground depth of several km. Within sight of the Strathbogie Ranges we traversed our way to Seymour and at one o’clock arrived at Fowles Wines very ready to enjoy lunch. The food was impressive with shared entrée comprising antipasto and charcuterie. For mains there was a choice of eye fillet beef and pork belly with desserts to finish - chocolate fudge cake and panacotta with moscato strawberries. Yum! Manager Michael Coggan gave an informative wine tasting delivered in a relaxed manner. The Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch blends were tasted and discussed including the origins of the provocative name.
Roger and Leanne Vella then conducted the Raffle and congratulated winners: Dennis Bath, Tracey Ball and Rod Rayward. GT3 Register member Linley Baxter thanked Leanne and Roger for organising a great day and advised that he would adopt the logistics for their future Run. We all wish to thank Julie Mason for her contribution in taking photos with talent and pizzaz! The 993/964 Register combines models of a similar era, design and engineering. In terms of engineering, the 964’s have far more in common with the 993’s than the earlier “G” Series cars. In order that similar cars are in the same Register we have moved the later model of car (964’s) from the Mid 911 Register to the 993 Register. Another consideration was that the smaller 993 Register gained 21 more cars. Accordingly the Mid 911 Register has been renamed from Mid 911 (74-93) to (74-89), and the 993 Register has been renamed 993/964 Register. With thanks to Ken Anson, Committee Member for this summary detail.

Run To Hogget Kitchen Warragul Story: Paul Sbrissa Photos: Ken Anson & Ewan Walsh Sunday 2nd June
Well done Jim and Mandy for another memorable Mid 911 Register run. Big thumbs up for also organising a break in the rain for the day. It all started in Endeavour Hills McDonalds where we met new members Leo Fusinato (Cayman), Steven and Susie Perien (911SC), and Anthony Presta (911 GTS). Welcome to you all. Anthony’s GTS was parked next to my SC and apart from being wider, longer, faster, fitted with AC and other interesting things it was clearly in the same family. As we always say, it doesn’t matter what Porsche you have, you’re always welcome on any register run. With a great mix of old, new, 911, Cayman, a Mini (?) and after the obligatory jokes about Jim’s lead foot we set off for morning tea in Korumburra. All was well till Ewan (my navigator) and I decide to follow Google Maps and not Vickie Morris. Bad mistake. Vickie and her 964 knew exactly where they were going. At least Google maps does get you back to where you are meant to be. We stick (sort of) to the notes from there on. Travelling through some very picturesque scenery as we head through Beaconsfield, Koo Wee Rup and Nyora, Ewan and I decide again to make an unintended detour through Poowong, with Anthony in tow. Eight little LED lights shinning 62
PORSCHE PARADE
back at me through my rear-view mirror. Elegant yet sinister at the same time. Eventually we arrive into Korumburra for morning tea, attracting the appropriate ribbing for getting lost twice. All in the fun I say. Anthony didn’t seem to mind. We head back out and admire each other’s pride and joy before heading off for lunch in Warragul. Leigh and Dianne Sampson’s 993TT for mine. Lovely vehicle. Exceptional drive through Mount Worth State Park. Lots of slow corners with beautiful natural Australian bush as a backdrop. Nothing like seeing a train of Porsches flowing corner through corner. No navigational issues this time around as we all make it to Hogget Kitchen within a few minutes of each other. A winery as a backdrop we head in to find the cellar door. Drinks in hand we sit down for an exceptional lunch. The grass fed 350g Angus steak a clear winner on the menu. So good in fact that John Gedye heard about it and turned up last minute just for lunch! After a good chin wag Jim presented Margot Templar, Barbara Ellaway and a lucky yours truly with a bottle of wine as raffle winners. Does it get any better than this?

Run to Chrismont Winery and Optional Overnight in Bright Story: Rada Popovic Photos: Ken Anson Saturday 6th April 2019
What a great run with both Drivers & Navigators all enjoying the day/night! Meeting point was Croydon Hotel where 24 Cars headed off to our first checkpoint of Alexandra led by John Gedye and his son Jake in their red and blue Boxsters. Weather was stunning with all the cars following each other at a leisurely pace enjoying the bends and views along the Black Spur. Garry was seen really enjoying the bends in his new Cayman GTS. A relaxing stop for Morning Tea at Alexandra was enjoyed by all. Phillip Leslie didn’t have time to clean the bugs from his windows from the previous run to Geelong the week before so he was spotted washing his windscreen so he could really enjoy the view for the last leg of the Run. Our final destination of Chrismont Winery here we come. Crossing the Bonnie Doon Bridge, we couldn’t all help but notice how very low it was for this time of the year with barely any water on the right hand side. Mansfield Whitfield Road led by Ken & Harriet took us around some windy bends 64
PORSCHE PARADE
allowing us all to enjoy the power of our cars, however 3 of the navigators, Helen, Barbara & Nadeeka in their own said don’t forget to say there were some interesting corners!! Our senses were alight with the smell of the pine forests around us as we drove into Chrismont Winery. Lunch and the local wines were extremely enjoyed by all with a beautiful view over the whole valley. New Members Theo & Judith Hass plus potential members Darren & Leila Sturt, Brendan & Barbara Keenan were all welcomed into the club. Raffles was drawn with Peter Hemphill, Yen Woo, Theo Hass, Philip Leslie & Garry Saber all walking away with a bottle of wine. We had the option after lunch to stay the night in Bright after the run so 18 of us all headed for another stunning drive through wine country to Bright for the night. Bright this time of the year is beautiful with all the Maple Leaves just starting to drop and the colours of the countryside simply breathtaking. We had our roof down along with a number of other cars enjoying the last of the good weather.
The Star Hotel Bright was our dinner destination where we all enjoyed a nice meal and got to know each other over a few drinks. Talk always started and ended up about our cars and how much we all enjoyed the day. It was a great way to unwind after a long day with a group of kindred spirits. Discussions were made about what the plan for the next morning was with some opting for an early start and heading over Mt Hotham through Dinner Plain and homeward, while others had arranged to meet for breakfast and discuss options on which scenic way to return to Melbourne, and others were staying another night. Ken & Harriet were heading off to Hervey Bay from Bright for an extended break (lucky them). We would all like to thank Ken, Harriet & Kane for organising such a wonderful run and a great overnighter. Please organise some more Saturday overnighters as it was a pleasure to share a weekend with you all.

Run to Healesville Sanctuary Story: Andrea Delaforce Photos: Ken Anson Sunday 19th May
What a flight of fancy this day was in the wild. We started with coffee at Aura Café, meeting the group and the Café owner who was on the same ship as Kon when the family emigrated all the way from Greece to Australia, in the beginning. Some fantastic people and cars started our run out to Kinglake, some “spirited driving” saw some scenic drive enthusiasts surpassed by some of the more destination focused participants. But it wouldn’t be a Kon organised run without the mandatory road works, which deterred a participant or 2 from braving an unsealed portion of road, nice try Kon (it was a pleasure? KG). We all met up for morning tea at Kinglake and the seemingly endless wait for the only bathroom in the Café. An opportunity to look over the procession of stunning cars over a coffee and rejoicing in a long-awaited empty bladder. It seemed the motorbike riders were also admiring our rides, as we were with their rides. We had time to kill before lunch, so we did the loop again, Groundhog Day (told you it was going to be a drive with some déjà vu added KG), the winding roads led to more “spirited driving” which was fantastic in everyone’s book. Meeting up at Healesville Sanctuary for our exclusive parking area, lunch and spectacular bird show was the highlight of the year! We were met by Angie & Lori from Zoos Victoria to escort us from our reserved parking area, it was more like a dignitary arrival then a Car 66

Club (totally overwhelming the way we were greeted and escorted to a beautiful secluded area amongst the wild beast, maybe not so wild KG). The BBQ buffet with a welcome to country indigenous elder playing the digeridoo to greet us was a heart-warming touch. Angie and Lori not only provided a great location (amongst the wild, can’t help it KG) the food was not only delicious but plentiful. After raffle drawing and a brief outline from Angie about Zoos Victoria’s work and the type of endless maintenance required to the Sanctuary we were escorted to our highlight of our visit a reserved seating at the “Spirits of the Sky” show. The bird encounters were so close we had bird dust on our camera from Magra the wedge tailed eagle who’s feathers lightly touched our heads as she flew over us. The birds and handlers gave us a conservation lesson about birds and their habitats and the powerful message of using recycled toilet paper. And remember recycle your old mobile phones! For a lot of the members it was their first bird encounter and visit to the Sanctuary and not surprisingly enjoyed the show thoroughly. Many thanks to Kon for organising such a memorable day and to Angie & Lori from Zoos Victoria. Angie and Lori were so overwhelmed at the PCV visit and are looking forward to the next Club’s visit. (It’s understandable since we are a great group of people KG).

Early Morning Run to Yarra Valley Chocolaterie Story & Photos: James Borg Sunday 9th June 2019
Let’s just begin with the stats: • 31 attendees at the start-point (2 late cancellations) • 21 vehicles (100% Porsche) • 9 Turbo’s (four 930’s, a 993, two 996’s, two 997’s,) … and it’s 7am on a Sunday morning amidst a long weekend. When organising this event, we were toying with the expectation of maybe 8 – 9 cars and a dozen or so members. Goodness did the numbers grow, which highlights the willingness of members to enjoy a drive with like-minded enthusiasts… (or something sadder, I don’t know). There was one new member introduced, Andre Iannuzzi with his sparkling 991GT3, and firsttime run attendees Robert & Connie Iemmolo and their 997Turbo. The banter amongst the crowd signalled pleasant familiarity amongst the group which is never easy to interrupt with the necessary announcements and advisories.

PORSCHE PARADE
A stunning array of Porsches made it onto Wellington Road and a sizeable formation continued for the bulk of the journey with favourable lights in the early part and sparse traffic. Quite a sight to see the looks of other motorists giving way to a column of 20 or so Porsches sliding nose-to-tail through the occasional round-about. We were soon in a rural setting – a mob of kangaroos as near as Lysterfield – with the sun still very low on the horizon glimmering between the trees. Through Belgrave, Emerald and Macclesfield then on to Seville and Gruyere – all excellent roads with light traffic and pleasant scenery. Margaret mapped a sensational route through the countryside for us to enjoy. Our destination, the Chocolaterie in Yarra Glen, was quiet as we arrived. All members managing to park in a single group - a most impressive lineup. There was a quick ‘group photo’ requested whilst drivers and navigators chatted en-masse about the lovely drive, then off to a well-deserved cuppa and breakfast. Continuing the theme of a cavalcade, group parking and group photo – tables were quickly rearranged so that all 31 of
us sat at the one (long) table…why not? Staff were diligent in bringing out drinks and breakfasts trying to raise petite voices over the cacophony generated by our attendees. Four raffle-prizes were drawn and for a pleasant change Stephen Lofthouse went home emptyhanded! Carol winning first prize (a Chocolaterie hamper), Giovani taking home a bottle of the Yarra Valley vino, Dan – whom came along with Carol - taking out a ‘Sundae Cup’. That’s two prizes going home in a White Gold 930!... and Garry Saber taking the fourth and final ‘Sundae Cup’. Protest lodged by Colin Smith. A most enjoyable drive along some great country roads. We managed to fit all that into the morning and made it home before midday. David, Margaret and I sincerely thank all whom attended for making this event such a success.
