For some of us it’s the engineering, build quality and reliability. For others it’s the design, race heritage and sporty drive or, we just plain love the look of them! For me it’s all of the above but the other day it got me thinking how important the looks are, all be it a little shallow.
Welcome to our Spring edition of Porsche Parade!
After selling my beloved 993 (don’t worry I still have my trusty 3.2 Clubsport in the garage) I bought a Golf GTI with the eager arrival of our first child for practical reasons.

In the last fifteen years I have owned seven cars, four of them Porsches. The others being a new VW Tourag and a new WRX (and the GTI) . Both of these cars were butt ugly and every day I would come out to go to work and say to myself “don’t worry, it will grow on you”. Well they didn’t and were traded after 6-8 months. The 993 was the other end of the scale, every day I would pause before getting in and just admire its design.
Be sure to check out The Annual Dinner dance Ad on page 6 and book early as this exciting event will surely book out.

Unfortunately I am having the same thoughts about the current Golf and now find myself trawling carsales.com.au for my next 911 to squeeze my now one year old into.
Will Darvall and I visit Gary Higgon’s collection for this instalment of “What’s in your garage”. This one has a bit of a twist being an Italo- German collection.

Porsche Parade is only available to financial members of the Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. A minimum of four issues are published annually. Not for individual sale.
My dilemma is (and a good one to have) that there is so many Porsches available in that 75-85K bracket.
Do you go the build quality and classic lines of the air cooled or the more refined drive of the water cooled cars? The air cooled variants will of course hold their value much better but how low will the 997’s go in the next five years pushing the 996’s even further?

Well, ‘tis spring and the weather is improving. It is time to drop the top, swap the gloves and scarves for sunnies, don the 50+ sunscreen and go a cruisin’. It’s not that mere rain or cold stops us from taking out our Porsches for a cruise but most of us still have even more fun when there’s sun. When thinking about this report I did a bit of investigating on recent club activities. In doing so I counted no less than 16 events since I penned (tapped?) my last report two months ago, consisting of 7 register, 4 social, 4 competition events, and a club night! The club night was something special too. We managed to secure Alan Hamilton as guest speaker, who with his father, started and ran Hamilton’s Porsche importers until the early ‘90’s. He treated the audience of nearly 200 to a riveting and nostalgic account of Porsche history and motorsport, including his own impressive involvement. We managed to video this event for our club archives. From this point in September, as I write this article, till the end of the calendar year there are 15 more events to go. This current period of activity seemed to me to be disproportionately high but in fact is not far from this year’s average run rate considering that we have 64 events in the club’s 2013 calendar. That number excludes the regular meetings of the General, Finance, Competition, Social, and Registers committees, as well as various other ad hoc meetings associated with running the club. Of the 15 remaining events there are five that I would consider special. The event on 15 October at PCM is a combined AGM and club night. You are invited to come along, watch and participate in the selection of your new committee for next year, hear about

On 27 October the huge Motorclassica event takes place at the Exhibition Buildings. This event, which is convened by the RACV, promises to be bigger and better than ever. This event will provide members with, among other things, the opportunity to display their cars, act as a PCV Show ‘n’ Shine judge, contribute as a volunteer, or just participate as a spectator. President’s Day takes place again this year at Sandown race track on 3 November and offers members with some track experience the opportunity to take friends, relatives, business associates and enemies around the track for some hot laps. You also have the option of turning up just to spectate or to be a passenger. On 10th November our club will be celebrating at the MCG the 50th anniversary of the iconic 911. This will include displays of our cars on the edge of and outside the actual arena and gourmet lunch in the Harrison Room. Such an important celebration of the marque is rare and we anticipate that it will be very popular. Finally, we have the club’s annual dinner dance on 30 November. We have done a lot of work to create something a little different this year and we hope you will find it a fun evening. Keep a look out for further information.

NEW FORMAT - NEW PRESTIGIOUS VENUE - NEW ENTERTAINMENT Acknowledge this year’s Competition Winners and join your fellow club members in our most significant event for 2013, our Annual Presentation Dinner. We have selected a new venue, the Clarendon Ballroom at the luxurious Langham Melbourne Hotel, Southbank. An extra special event awaits this year with a brand new format and two different musical acts to suit all tastes as well as a professional MC (Elliot Goblet) to capture everyone’s attention and ensure our presentations are given the attention they deserve. As our final tribute to the Golden Anniversary year of the 911 – Tradition: Future, we’ll follow a sophisticated black and gold colour scheme and even bring back Elvis, with some “traditional” ‘60’s music, before we go back to the “future” with Jellybean Addiction’s retro party music.

Elliot Goblet is one of this country’s favourite comedians who’ll you remember from many TV appearances, and is now a much sought after corporate event MC and entertainer. Felix’s band Jellybean Addiction will end the night with a retro dance party featuring hits from the 70s & 80’s. They certainly left us asking for more at last year’s Mid-Year Dinner Dance! social corner Hi everyone, welcome to another Social Corner. I promised early in the year of some exciting events and the remaining months of 2013 are hosting a number of these, with some already announced via the PCV updates from Carly that hopefully will have had you marking your calendar to take part in this very exciting last quarter of the year. I am sad to announce that Will Darvall and Trevor Leavesley have retired from our Social Committee. On behalf of the Social Committee I wish to thank Will and Trevor for their vast contributions and dedication to the social side of the PCV. Will retires holding the record for 120 attendees on the Trawool Autumn Run of 2007. August Club Night: Rumour has it that Will Darvall has to have 3 address books to keep all of his friends’ contact details. PCV was very honoured to have had one of Will’s good friends in Alan Hamilton speak to us on the history of Porsche in Australia as well as his own racing career. Alan spoke for over 90 minutes yet it felt as if only 15 minutes had passed. A selection of photographs played upon the screen and illustrated the motoring history that Porsche, Norman and Alan brought to Australia. These photographs included the first 356’s being craned off the ships onto Australian shores at the Melbourne docks, a 550 Spyder at the 1957 Albert Park Grand Prix and behind the scenes of 68 Church Street to detail but a mere selection of the slide show. Thank you to Porsche Cars Australia and Michael Browning for providing these photographs. It was a very proud moment for me to be able to be part of such a special event as Social Director. Winter Run: Adrian Nelson and Janet Conheady volunteered to organise our Winter run. Our members enjoyed morning tea at the Neerim South CFA and the CFA enjoyed a $750 donation. Adrian always chooses fantastic roads to let Porsches loose upon, but he really outdid himself this time providing at times what seemed like a motorkhana thanks to the recent storms that left debris over may of the roads keeping drivers alert all the way to our luncheon destination of the Wild Dog Winery in Warragul.
sure many comments of how they did it better than “the guys” were held over an after race lunch in Port Melbourne. Forthcoming events: October Club Night & AGM: Our AGM is just around the corner where following the formalities including the presentation of the annual & financial reports and General Committee positions, a German themed club night to take out the remainder of the evening. Annual Dinner: Entertainment has been confirmed with a couple of surprises promised for the evening. The flyer will be released shortly for this very exciting evening that promises to be an Annual Dinner not to be missed. Due to limited space within the Langham Ballroom I advise booking early to avoid missing out. Show ‘n’ Shine: We will again team up with RACV MotorClassica for this year’s PCV Show ‘n’ Shine event. MotorClassica offers an abundance of motoring delights in and around the stunning Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton and PCV Members can be involved in many ways including; by showing their pride and joy; being up close and personal with the historic classics; scrutineering the pride of their peers and even volunteering for the RACV MotorClassica. This year for the first time, MotorClassica is calling the Clubs’ Display area outside the Exhibition Building “Club Sandwich” which will be in an area securely fenced off and only accessible to event ticket holders. All club members whose car is part of PCV’s Show ’n’ Shine and therefore Club Sandwich, will receive two free passes inside the Exhibition Building for the day their vehicle is on display. Bookings are open for this event. 50th Anniversary of the 911: I am delighted to announce that PCV have secured the MCG to hold our celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of this very special car. To help us in celebrating this event we have extended the welcome to the Type 901 Register, 356 Register and our interstate counterparts to help us celebrate this occasion. With thanks to Michael Bailey, PCV has obtained exclusive use of the Yarra car park area adjacent to the MCG Members where cars will be displayed within their model designation.
Alvaro once again conducted a booked out and well ran event where teams of attendees competed in a 10 lap qualifying session to determine grid positions and then continued to race in heats that resulted in the ten lap Grand Final and ten lap Consolation Final.
To make this event even more remarkable, we have been given special permission for an Anniversary Tribute of four 911s displayed on the edge of the arena. Another six special cars will be displayed upon the forecourt outside the entrance to the MCG Members that will welcome attendees inside the hallowed ground for our lunch where we have access to the impressive MCA Harrison Room for our two-course gourmet casual lunch overlooking the MCG arena. This event is open for bookings.

from race control August saw us involved in a new approach to PCV Competition. Entrants in our competition events have definitely been falling off this year and we were very concerned that the scheduled hill climb event at Haunted Hills in early August would draw sufficient entries to go anywhere near breaking even. So we made the decision to cancel the Haunted Hills event and to join with the Alfa Club (AROCA) to support an event that they had organised at Sandown on 11 August. Sandown was an AROCA permitted event, but they specifically facilitated PCV entries and allowed us to run in our own, Porsche only, groups. On this basis, we ran it as a PCV competition event, within the AROCA event. In the end we still only received 43 PCV entries, but this represented approximately half the total field. PCV members provided many of the marshals and officials, and certainly were a major help with scrutineering. There was very good camaraderie between the two clubs and interesting lessons to be learnt on both sides. Depending on trends with entry numbers, approaches with other clubs may need to become a consideration for the future. – More about this later in my report.
In early September we were back to a favourite track for many, Phillip Island. An indication of how popular the Island has become, was reflected in 15 interstate entries from PCNSW and PCSA. The interstaters certainly enjoyed themselves with one group from NSW (5 GT3’s and 1 GT 2) managing to take 3,6000km to get from Sydney to Phillip Island, via every possible twisty back road or mountain top imaginable. Our day at the Island was as near to perfect. It was beautiful weather and hardly a breath of wind. Theo Mihelakos added some unexpected excitement when he had a rear tyre explode at 250kph plus on the straight approaching the very fast Turn 1, but with not inconsiderable skill he managed to keep it on the black stuff. Until recently, we were still short of an event between Phillip Island and the year-end wind up at President’s Day. We have now managed to bridge this gap by running another joint meeting as mentioned earlier. This time we joined forces with the WRX Club and will be holding a hill climb together at Haunted Hills in early October. This tight little track will certainly be suited to the 4 wheel drive Rex’s. It will be a very interesting day, to see how Germany’s and Japan’s finest face off.

Our financial results have improved significantly from the previous twelve months with a dramatic turnaround in the financial impact of our competition events. This year’s competition gross profit of $4,596, compared to a gross loss ($19,892), last year. This turnaround is due to the enormous efforts of Andrew Bonwick, who has managed a very challenging set of competition events with a great focus on costs control, enabling this improvement, with only a modest increase in revenues. There was also a significant improvement in the financial result of the 6 hour event at Sandown. Another great improvement has been achieved in the net cost of the clubs magnificent magazine, mainly from magazine advertising revenues which have increased by more than $4,000, thanks to some tireless work from Leon. Ron has done a great job for us once again, with no increases in the costs of the magazine. The net cost per magazine, per primary member has improved from $2.49 in 2012, to just $1.63 for 2013 – really excellent. We are planning on achieving a small profit in 2014, with a budget target of $3,500. With changes to legislation, new model rules were issued by Consumer Affairs Victoria, leading to our club submitting our amended club rules which were voted on at our June Special General Meeting, and subsequently accepted by Consumer Affairs Victoria. The new Act provides that a tier 2 association, such as PCV, must have its financial statements “reviewed” prior to the AGM. This independent review has been conducted, and our financial statements have been available on our web-site. The review replaces the audit which had been conducted previously. Last Year’s Financial Results. For the twelve months to June 30, 2013 the club will report a small financial loss of ($2,666), and holds members’ funds (our net assets), of $286,218 as at the end of the financial year. This compares to a loss of ($16,384) for the same period last year, with members’ funds of $288,884. To put this into perspective the loss of $2,666 resulted from total income of over $521,000 and total expenses of over $523,000. The result for the year included some very large unbudgeted expenditure items; the Archiving Project – which will provide on line access to all our past magazines; the Wild Apricot Development – which provides

what’s in your garage?
Gary Higgon with his Italo-German collection
Gary Higgon has a delectable collection of Italo-German exotics for all driving occasions, with the proviso that the Italians stay dry, for fear of electrical failures! Gary has always loved cars, his first being a ’63 beetle. An EK Holden followed, then a very fast Yamaha 650, Mercs and Beemers. “Married, house, kids” slowed the inevitable progression, but there is currently 2 190SLs, an E Type Series1 roadster and other cars scattered around “having stuff done”. He is currently enjoying his “Porsche phase”, having joined PCV some years ago and taking to the track. First steed was a 996, which had several excursions into the weeds, as he gained experience. He freely admits that he kept the factory nose cone production team in full employment! Subsequently, there has been a couple of GT3s, the ex-Matt Stoupas Super Cup car, and now, the GT3 RSR rocket ship. When Ron and I visited the outer suburban Higgon spread, Janine raised the bar with her hospitality! The Cars; in chronological order. 1963 Maserati Mistral Spyder, with a 3.5, twin spark, DOHC hemi head straight 6 and 5 speed ZF gearbox, successor to the iconic 3500GT. 830 fastback Coupes and 120 Spyders were made, 20 of these in RHD, with perhaps 15 left. The Masers of this era were very elegant, with beautiful proportions and lines, the Mistral being designed by Frua, with bodies made by Maggiora. The engine had Lucas indirect FI, which was troublesome, but produced more power than carbys and was also found in the
famous exquisite 250F, in 2.5 litre form, which won 8 F1 races from ’54-‘60 and took Fangio to World Championships in 1954 (also driving Mercedes) and 1957. Those 185-16 tyres, with 85 aspect ratio, were pre-low profile and would have given hairy tail out cornering. It is hard to believe that this car is 50 years old! 1970 Maserati Indy 2+2, with a 4.7 V8, fed by 4 twin choke Webers. Design was by Vignale and on first glance I mistook it for a Lambo, not having seen one for years! (Maser Ghibli and Lambo Espada were also very similar). Tyres were now 205/70 VR 14 (Yep, 14) Michelin X, the bees’ knees in their day! 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, with a Colombo 4.4 V12, sucking through 6 double barrel carbs, redlined at 7,700! The 365 referred to cylinder capacity then (so, 365x12), but like many logical numbering systems, it was subsequently hijacked by the marketing department. Design was by Pininfarina and it was well balanced, with a 5 speed transaxle and 4 wheel independent suspension, with coils and wishbones (the legendary previous GTO had a live rear axle). About 1400 were made (estimates vary) from ’68-’73, with 158 RHD Coupes, this one coming from England and being owned by Gary for 10 years. The Daytona name was unofficial and bestowed by the press, supposedly due to a 1, 2, 3 finish

in the ’67 Daytona 24 Hours by the 330 P4 (?). It had great competition success, coming 5th overall at Le Mans in ’71 and winning the GT Class in ’72 (with 1st 5 places),’73 and ‘74. Long after production ceased, in ’79 it came 2nd overall at the Daytona 24 hours. The factory made 15 competition cars, with aluminium and fibreglass panels and plexiglass windows, but they were raced by privateers. Tyres were 205/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX, the ultimate then, but were heavily grooved, with high void/ tread ratio and not the solid blocks of tread and low profile seen today. Tyre technology has certainly revolutionised handling, taking suspension technology with it! The Daytona has iconic status, not dissimilar to the 2.7 RS. Gary calls it “a truck”, which needs to be wrestled for best results. He previously had a “Queen Mary” 365 GT 2+2, the more refined tourer.
991 Carrrera S. Ditto; the amazing high performance evolution of an impractical design that could never work!
When next you dine at KFC or Pizza Hut, just be glad that you may be supporting Gary’s efforts in keeping many excellent cars alive and enjoyed!

2007 GT3 RSR 4.0, (late 996, early 4.0) with sequential gearbox and LHD. It was imported and raced by Matt, until Gary fell in love with it. It has an extensive Porsche Motorsport history, including 2nd twice at Le Mans in GT Class, winner at Daytona 24 hours and Sebring 12 hours in GT, many other places, and top 5 finishes in the Le Mans series. However, it is a precious “keeper”, so Gary has built a clone for racing, with RHD and an H pattern gearbox. Panamera 4S 4.8 V8. What can be added to anything previously written, except that it does everything incredibly well, handles better than any big car should and Gary and Janine can’t fault it?

I just love this track! Things came together marvellously for a great day at our final speed event of the year. The weather, which had been forecast all the previous week to be wet and windy for the Sunday, turned out to be perfect. What we got instead was zero cloud, little wind and a crisp, high teens day as only early spring can deliver. Just the thing for great times and great fun. The scene certainly impressed the official I took out on the track for some hot laps at lunchtime. He commented on how great the scenery was, including the view of the ocean in the sunlight. I obviously didn’t drive him fast enough. We were privileged by the attendance of 15 guests from the Porsche clubs of SA and NSW and from all accounts they greatly enjoyed themselves. We heard that a few of the NSW contingent used their trip south to clock up some three and a half thousand kms each, so they definitely made the most of their opportunity for sightseeing on the way. The track had been resurfaced at the start of the 2013 season. Although, some quick times were recorded in our visit earlier this year, at that time the new surface was very fresh and while it had heaps of grip, it was so different that many drivers felt uncomfortable with it and were somewhat cautious. Not so this time; the surface was still extremely “grippy” but it had bedded down and felt much more familiar. The added confidence led to some hot driving, with no less than 5 lap records being recorded, as follows: Peter Fitzgerald

Some of the interstate folk were also pretty quick. On a track that must be a new experience for most of them, it is noteworthy that eight of them broke the 1:50 barrier and a ninth got within a smidgin of that time, and in a 944. I was behind that 944 on one lap through turn 12 onto the main straight and I kid you not when I say that it did an extended rear wheel drift through most of that bend.
This was the first event at which our new Event Director, Tony Carolan, took on full responsibility for set up. Adding to Tony’s performance anxiety, I’m sure, was the rumour that a top CAMS official was expected to be at the event watching proceedings. This also kept the pressure on the event officials of the day: C-o-C Mark Horton-Andrews, stewards Andrew Bonwick and Robin Humphries and head scrutineer Michael O’Brien. As it turned out it was a false alarm. In any case, well done to them and the rest of the officials and flaggies. The Results For the detailed results refer to the list. Within the classes the following items of special interest have been noted. Open: Peter Fitzgerald blitzed the field with his new lap record but Stephen Bradford and Rick Mensa are continuing to get quicker. M1: Bob Hawker also had a comfortable win, with a better time than his usual for Phillip Island, but his campaign for club champion was handicapped by him only being awarded 20 points for the win because the group only had 4 starters on the day. M2: Ben Faggetter set yet another track record in that car in which he now seems very comfortable and confident. Josh Fitt continues to improve too and seems to have the measure of his father who is nonetheless keeping the
pressure on junior. Howard and Matt Burton are also having a keen contest within their family. GT: Theo Mihelakos continued his current dominance of GT class with his continued improvement showing a 2.5 second better time than his previous visit. Even so, it only gained him a ½ second advantage over Stan Bougadakis. A: Manny Mezzasalma clocked a quick time for a standard 993 to clearly win A grade. B: Simon Baxter’s time took a full second off the previous record held by Matt Stoupas but Rick Moscatti still got the points as Simon is only an occasional visitor this year. C: Pete Matherson made the most of his nemesis Aaron Ireland currently being in the Big Apple on business and had a clear win in class, with Ian van Driel in clear second place from Cameron Goodyear. Cam tells me he finally has the confidence again to drive hard through turn one after it had brought him, his car and his wrist undone more than a season ago. D: Garry Voges was lamenting to me how he managed to knock off the old D class track record only to then see John Swan obliterate it by a further 1 ½ seconds. Well done John!

SPRING 2013

This would be our third visit to Sandown Raceway in 2013 in what is shaping up to be a very busy second half of the competition season. However things were just a little different on this occasion. It was the first time since I’ve been competing that we would share a regular sprint event with another car club –in this case “AROCA” or the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Australia. It’s here that I must make a big confession. After buying my first car in 1985 a navy blue Alfasud, I too was a member of AROCA, and to this day I still have a sweet spot for some of the old Alfas – especially the 1975 105 GTV. In any case, it is here that my loyalty for Porsches commenced, because in the end the rust and reliability (or lack thereof) ensured that I wouldn’t be a repeat Alfa owner, and as soon as I could afford step up to a Porsche I would. The running of the day would be a little different to what we’ve come to expect at PCV. AROCA still scrutineer every entrant on the day, and it took a while for the spaghetti munchers to figure out where the engines were located! – So that meant that the process took a little longer than expected. This was just as well, because the Weltmeister mechanics were missing in action and I needed the extra time to unload the Van and fit a fresh set of tyres. In fact, if it wasn’t for a very helpful Grant Stephenson (who I am sure has only infrequently played mechanic), I doubt we would have them fitted in time for the first session. The plan was to fit a new set of softs, and have a crack at Matt’s long standing B class record. What a waste of time that was – the first run of the day (in nice fast and cool conditions) was a practice run and not timed. Anway, that’s my excuse for again failing to knock off the mad Greek’s lap record. To AROCA’s credit the event ran really smoothly, weather conditions were great and apart for a few Alfa breakdowns, we all got to have plenty of track time. It was also a much better outcome than our previous visit to Sandown when multiple cars were pinged for high noise levels.

Taken out once again by Peter Fitzgerald, but a really impressive drive by Sally Anne Haines who is making good use of that 1000hp Turbo.
Talking about domination, Phil Treloar notched up another win, coming within a whisker of his own lap record set back in June. Graham Williams had another impressive drive, coming within a few tenths behind Phil. Manny Mezzasalma took third place, whilst his 993 is certainly a beautiful piece of kit, it’s a bit underdone relative to the newer 997’s.
M1 Class Bob Hawker continued to have his way in M1 with a fast time of 1.18.279, not that far from his own lap record. Brett Helmers showed that being a newcomer is no handicap, coming home in second place. M2 Class Nick K certainly had a great year in M2 last year, but Ben Faggetter has totally dominated M2 this year and in my opinion is probably the driver of the year. Ben set a new lap record to win M2. By my count Ben has set five new lap records in M2 this year: Phillip Island, Sandown, Winton (Long & Short) and Haunted Hills. Team Fitt finished in second and third, with son continuing to drive the 993 like it belongs to someone else. GT Class Theo and Stan looked like they were having a ding dong battle all day, but in the end the Motec telemetry and some intensive driver training allowed Theo to have his way and win class on the day.
B Class The Greek’s lap record continues to stand, but I was happy with the day and the points. The real action was between two relative newcomers in Mark Smundin and Richard Thompson. These chaps are showing that the old 3.2 Carreras can still put down some respectable lap times. C Class Nothing much changed in C Class, Aaron won another round, Pete Matheson and Grant Stephenson battled out second and third respectively. D Class This is a ripper class, with plenty of diverse drivers and cars. On this occasion, the experienced Garry Voges was too good for the rapidly improving Melanie Treloar (would be nice to see what she could do in Dad’s 996!) and Tim Rout.

CLUB NIGHT ‘LOOKING BACK WITH ALAN HAMILTON’ Porsche Centre Melbourne Tuesday 20th August 2013 Our biggest club night in recent years took place on the 20th August at Porsche Centre Melbourne. With 196 RSVPs, Felix increased the catering from the usual 120-140 to 200 and while a few couldn’t make it on the night, we ended up with 185 well fed and comfortable attendees. The drawcard was Porsche Legend and PCV Life Member Alan Hamilton, who reflected on the development of Porsche in Australia. With the assistance of Will Darvall, Alan took club members on a photo journey that encompassed the Porsche showrooms in South Yarra and Richmond, as well as his many years on the racetrack, that has made Porsche, a household name and the race success that it is today. Club members were enthralled at the history of Porsche in Australia that was recalled by Alan and he kept all of us entertained with his many jokes in the Q & A session following his presentation. One of the many aspects of the presentation that was unique to Alan was his discussion of his building of his 917/30, a truly awesome vehicle. He had seen chassis #4 while at Porsche and managed to purchase it. It was missing the corner suspension and engine, which he managed to buy from the company before it was shipped back. The car was assembled in Melbourne and shipped to Adelaide for a race at the Grand Prix meeting. As part of the promotional activity for the dealership in Adelaide they ran a raffle with first prize being a trip up to Mt Lofty in the car and second prize a ride back, which was possible because the SA Government registered the race cars for the meeting and Alan has bolted (glued?) a passenger seat into the car. The Lady Mayoress won second prize and hopped into the car for the ride down. Alan asked if she wanted to go straight back or have a drive first, and being a trooper she suggested the drive. They drove to Murray Bridge and back, in the rain, in a race car which had fit and finish ok for the track but inadequate for the weather and in a car which did 0-100 mph (not kph) in 3.2 and 0-200 in 8 seconds-ish. Alan reflected they arrived back at the dealership soaked to the bone but having enjoyed the open road. Sounds like it was quite a trip. He reported that the car was recently sold overseas for $4.8 million! The always entertaining Michael Bailey brought all the members up to date on the Tassie Tour, which is set for April 20l4. Members participating will tour the Apple Isle and sample the gourmet treats and beverages that only Tasmania can offer. All in all, a great night was had by all that attended, and we now look forward to the many upcoming events that the Club has organised.

For those of us who did not read the entry form, we got an extra hour in the morning at the track to fine tune......the position of... the tool box, the fuel drums.... and all the other important things. With perfect weather we were all in for a great day! Open class was full with a small number of desperates on slicks..... Fitzy had obviously been back to “Q” for the latest gadgetry in 997 warfare. He drove very well, not only did he win Open Class but set new records for both long and short tracks. With the minimum of effort (read tyre wear) I suspect there was a fair bit left in it.... look out lap records. Matt Stoupas struggled into second place, driving the wheels off the fuel pump plagued RSR (clone). Jamie Lovett rolled out his new four wheeled Kawasaki (GT3R) and with no practice or set up time, rolled into third place....with much more to come. The rest of Open Class was on “R” tyres and therefore a little off the outright place, but in a good battle of their own. In M1 only three cars turned up, which gave Bob Hawker an easy victory, with Brett Helmers still refining his skills and car in second, and Andrew Goulsbra third in his 944 turbo, not far behind. M2. With two father and son combinations M2 was a full class. I had a good run in the morning with a trusty 993 working very well. Having not driven the short track for twenty five years, it was fun to reacquaint myself with the hip swaying esses.... enough to throw any ill handling car off. Josh Fit drove brilliantly making the most of his soft tyres, unfortunately for Bryan Fit (the bank) these were black, smoldering, overcooked gum by the time he got to run on them, but still managed to post some very respectable times. The second of the fathers and sons Matt and Howard Burton roughed it out all day with Howard taking the honors. GT class was also a little underdone in terms of numbers, but the three competitors were very close and it was fun to watch. Theo Mih... practice a lot.. elakos and his Motecar taking the chocolates, Stan Bougadakis second,

splitting the GT3s and Peter Harrison third. A. At the end of the day A class saw the same usual name at the top. Despite Phil Treloar struggling a little for set up he still managed to keep his closest and only real threat at bay (Manny Mezzasalama) who posted some great times in his very clean 993. Jurisdiction Briedis took out P3 in another 993. Good to see the old 993s taking some points off the later cars. B. With a number of new and old faces returning to class B it was Rick Moscati who continued his good form to come away with the class win. Relative new comer Tom Marks, in “old silver”(ex Peter Harrison, ex Matt Stoupas) 964, has shown he is a natural behind the wheel and with new tyres secured second spot for the day in
front of Daniel Reynolds in his tried and true 3.2 Carrera. Great drive and good to see you back! C. Surprise, surprise it’s the Aaron Ireland show!! Starting the day with a conservative (for him) long track run, Aaron put it all together in the afternoon to set yet another class lap record. Always great to watch to see just how it should be done. Ian Van Driel came in second ahead of Michael O’Brien. D. John Swan was able to turn the tables on Garry “the mo” Voges with a new lap record. While Garry did post some very good times, on the short track, he had to settle for second..... this time. Melanie Treloar split the 944 entrants to take third, keeping the blokes honest.

The day after Winton, we found ourselves at DECA, another glorious sunshine filled day, but a crisp 15 degrees. After 10+ years away, I am finally back in the full swing of PCV events, with many thanks to Ray Dick, Flatsix, for helping me get there. It is noticeable how much the club has changed in this time. The “run of day” at DECA has also changed for the better. It’s non-stop and go-go-go. Full utilisation of back track, mini track and skidpan makes for an exciting day of competition. I must admit, it’s very impressive to see the level of effort and contribution from volunteers to make a Club event work. I have been to a few events this year and DECA was another well-run and well-organised event, with plenty to do and to think about, an outstanding job by all. DECA is a test of driving skill and concentration. The combination of speed, vehicle dynamics and car control is a true test of driving skill at a safe speed. On the day, competitors were divided into two groups for the morning exercises; Group 1 did the road track (also known as the “back track”) and the mini road track. After one sighter lap on each, we then did two flying timed runs. A good test of speed, braking disciplines and car control through the slalom track. To get a good time the key is to keep a fast, tight line without hitting any witches hats. Group 2 was on the skidpan with the now infamous “Dolly Parton” motorkhana exercise. After one sighter, three timed runs were recorded, two clockwise and one anti clockwise. All times were cumulative for the day, so consistency became the order of the day. There were a few hangovers from the dinner the night before at Bhojass restaurant and at the various watering holes in Shepparton. Some recalcitrant competitors like Fitzy and G.Voges decided to snob the group all together and go elsewhere (because Fitzy couldn’t read simple instructions re dinner arrangements). Anyway back to the begining the night before

… clearly noticeable the next day at DECA with the WD’s (Wrong Directions) and distinct inability to concentrate on the task at hand. What would an event like this be without some controversy by my good mate Matthew Stoupas! He proved in the morning what a talented driver he is, incredibly quick and skillful. Pity, as Matt was doing some awesome times on the skidpan in the morning, and was right up there. After lunch, and a quick debrief by the Officials with particular focus on behavioral issues and objections from the morning (my new mate Rick almost had a “Stoupas Moment” during the lunch debrief … ), the afternoon events got underway. The head-to-head events on the skidpan were awesome fun. Two identical motorkhana circuits were setup, called “Valet Parking”. Set side by side on the skidpan, competitors chose whoever they wanted to compete against, but timing was still individual based. This was a lot of fun and great entertainment for all. Overall, it was an outstanding day in the sunshine and with great camaraderie and competition. The final results were as follows, starting with outright placing’s. TOP 5 Outright Positions First Allan Hines, 997 Twin Turbo 3.8S (Open Class) Second Bob Hawker, 996 GT3 (M1 Class) Third: Aaron Ireland, 3.0L 911 SC (C Class)
Fourth: Greg Muller, 996 Twin Turbo (Open Class) Fifth: Theo Mihelakos, 996 GT3 … had to slot this one in. Not a bad effort on my behalf and in such good company. Wish my mate Nick Foster had been there to see my driving on the day, he would have been very proud of the ‘ol man! I must admit it was very impressive watching Allan Hines launch his red rocket ship around the skidpan. What an awesome car and what a great driver of course. Well done to Allan - an outstanding achievement to take outright honours for the day! Final Results in Class:Open Class: Allan Hines and Greg Muller placed first and second, respectively. M1 Class: Bob Hawker first in class, he may have won the day outright if it weren’t for a few witches-hats. Still a superb effort coming second outright, showing a brilliant display of driving skill. Brett Helmers second in class. M2 Class: Ben only just beat Bryan Fitt to win class (even after hitting 2 cones); (not sure how Ben managed to let go of hand long enough to actually compete.) GT Class: Stan & myself were the only 2 in class (Peter el’ Presidente was too busy with timing and organisational stuff), we really need to get more in our class, how else am I going to become Club Champion again … ohh yehh, I know, I can “stack” my class!
A Class: Phil Treloar again drove superbly to take out class, closely followed by Peter Vasta to take second and Juris Briedis in third. B Class: Rick Moscati drove well in his beautiful 964C2, but hit a few cones and was beaten on the day by Daniel Reynolds in his 911 Carerra. Finishing very closely behind in 3rd place was Tom Marks in his 964. A very competitive class this year, with all 3 drivers finishing outright in top 11 positions - well done lads! Rick, don’t forget we have $1,000 bet buddie; my money is on my mate Nick Foster. C Class: Again a truly outstanding performance by Club Champion, Aaron Ireland to take out class and come third outright. Brilliant display of driving excellence in his 911SC on the skidpan and the back track; I really feel for the other competitors in this class … a valiant effort by Mark Homer to come second in class. D Class: Garry Voges drove well in his 944 to narrowly edge out John Swan also in a 944. Both doing clean runs for the day, avoiding any witches hats. Melanie Treloar in third place in her Boxters great effort given a full class. OTHER Class: Christian Fitzgerald - not worth mentioning his BMW, get a real car lad Well done to all participants. The key to DECA is to find a rhythm, maintain focus and concentration and above all be consistent – avoid hitting witches hats and WDs, as times are cumulative. Hence, the key is consistency, don’t try too hard and don’t overdrive your vehicle. The DECA facilities are fantastic for developing one’s driving skills and practicing car control, in particular – throttle steering, in a safe and friendly environment. DECA was Andrew Bonwick’s last event as Competition Director; he is handing over the reins. Over the past 4 years Andrew has made an outstanding contribution and many productivity improvements to the overall running of the competition side of PCV. The level of automation (web based) and information easily accessible is impressive. Sincere thanks from all competition members Andrew – your efforts are much appreciated, you will be missed.

That’s a wrap from me; it’s good to be back in the Club, good to see again all the smiling and happy faces. The DECA days are a lot of fun, and the friendships and camaraderie is what it is all about. At times, we may need to remind ourselves that there aren’t sheep stations at stake. We need to make sure pride doesn’t get in the way and we acknowledge and respect the effort the Organisers, Officials and Marshals that make the day happen. They need to be appreciated and thanked (no matter what), as it can be a thankless job. So to all - the Committee, Organisers, Officials, Marshals, and Participants THANK YOU, for an outstanding day!

Porsche has topped the annual JD Power study into ownership gratification for the ninth straight year. The Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study looks at how pleasing a new car is to own and drive in the first 90 days of ownership. The results, based on the responses of 83,000 new owners or lessees, score brands out of 1000, with 77 different attributes of the driving and ownership experience examined to come up with the final score. Porsche ranked first with a score of 884, well ahead of Audi (857) and BMW (854), Land Rover (853) and Toyotaowned luxury brand Lexus (847). The highest-ranked non-premium brand was Chrysler’s Ram division for pickup trucks and vans, with a score of 817, followed by Volkswagen (809).

A number of mainstream brands ranked lowly, with Toyota, Jeep, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Smart taking out the bottom five spots. In terms of individual models, the Land Rover Range Rover was the highestranked vehicle overall. Other popular models included the Fiat 500 in the city car class, Volkswagen Golf GTI in the compact sporty class, and the BMW 5-Series in the mid-size luxury class. Mazda’s CX-5 was the most pleasing compact SUV, and the Porsche Cayenne was the pick of the midsize premium SUV segment. JD Power says the results of the study are “used extensively by manufacturers worldwide to help them design and develop more appealing vehicles and by consumers to help them in their purchase decisions”. Winter Run It was a crisp Sunday morning on the 18th August when the slow procession of Porsches arrived for the Winter Run. It was an impressive sight with 50 cars participating and a great variety of models present. The usual starting point of Hungry Jack’s Croydon was a hive of activity with many new members introduced and maps, instructions and warnings issued. We all headed off towards Lilydale in an orderly fashion onwards to our morning tea destination of Neerim South CFA. The crisp cool air at Croydon gave way to beautiful sunshine as we made our way to Neerim South CFA – at this point it was one
of those wonderful winter days of sunshine, a little wind and a fresh feel to the air. Once again the CFA ladies excelled themselves with the usual favourites of scones, slices and sandwiches but the sight of ginger fluff sponge and rum balls were real treasures of the past. Many new introductions were made on this run with one bathroom available and a constant winding queue of happy members chatting and laughing whilst they awaited their turn. Heading towards Jindivick and then on to Poowong the skies clouded over and then as we passed through Drouin we headed into a complete weather change with gusty
winds and heavy rain making the driving more than interesting. Trees over the road and the sight of an earlier accident were strong reminders to keep your eyes on the road and be aware of speed! With the rolling hills as a back drop the Wild Dog Winery was a spectacular sight. We all enjoyed great wine and food and if the noise was an indicator, great company. The freeway was close by which meant we all had a very straight forward run home and the completion of another great PCV run.

Back to Winton for the second time in 4 weeks, this excited many who love the track. For those still finessing elements to deliver a personal best lap (or even a lap record) drivers could pick up where they had just left a few weeks prior. The day started with a cloudy and cool winter morning, all were hoping the rain stayed away, at least till the end of the day.
M2 Class:
The changing of the guard completed with Tony Carolan replacing Andrew Bonwick as competition director. Tony did a great first up effort and had everyone sorted at the drivers briefing. A full day of the long track awaited, whilst most drivers get their fastest time in the morning sessions, I get mine usually in the last session of the day so doing the long track all day suited me.
Another lap record for this class was recorded by Theo Mihelakos with a time of 1:33.636, this ensured he achieved first place. Stan Bougadakis finished second and posted a time of 1:34.554 followed by Simon Zettl in third place with a 1:39.036.
Like each motorsport event there was a small contingent in entree class, this is a great way for novice drivers to get some track experience without the pressure of the clock. I certainly used this class as an introduction to motorsport and circuit racing. However on the day, the class had some extra class with dual VFL/AFL Brownlow Medallist Peter Moore making an appearance. If he can drive as good as he played football lookout! OPEN Class: Peter Fitzgerald well and truly took out the honours to win this class and outright in lap record time of 1:26.423, his closest rival was Matt Stoupas with a 1:30.017 who was second, and a newer club racer in Open who is impressing this year Sally-Anne Hains finished third with a respectable time of 1:31.666. M1 Class: Bob Hawker blitzed his rivals in this class with a 1:31.429 to take first place and third outright. New comer climbing onto the podium in second place was Brett Helmers with a 1:35.172, Brett is impressing in his first year in motorsport. Andrew Goulsbra rounded out the top 3 of 3 runners in this class with a 1:36.218.
48
PORSCHE
PARADE
Only 2 runners in this class on the day, Ben Faggetter was in a class of his own with a 1:32.890 to take out first place. Bryan Fitt finished second with 1:35.605. GT Class
A Class: Phil Treloar yet again took out first place in lap record time of 1:33.984, nearly a second ahead of Graham Williams in second place who posted a 1:34.832. Peter Vasta was third with 1:41.845. B Class: Yet another win and lap record for Rick Moscati who did a 1:36.424 to comfortably take out first place. Second was Richard Thompson with a 1:38.985 and Brent Howard was third in a time of 1:40.467. C Class: The king of Winton Aaron Island did it again winning the class in a time of 1:36.640. Us mere mortals in this class can only watch and admire how good Aaron is on this
track. Peter Matheson took out second place in 1:40.142 with Ian Van Driel just behind in third with time of 1:40.470. D Class: Garry Voges posted a 1:39.702 to win the class and stand first on the class podium once again for the season. Melanie Treloar was second in a time of 1:42.798 and Philip Cox rounded out the 3 in a time of 1:47.182.
All in all a great day out at Winton for PCV motorsport, we will look forward to Tony’s Competition Directorship this year. Many thanks to all the Officials and Marshals who helped keep everyone in-line and safe for the day, it is a long road trip to Winton for this crew so they deserve very special credit as without them we could not do what we do on the track.

Ladies Go Kart Experience 2013! Sunday 15th September, 2013
It was now 12 noon, so time to head off on a 5 minute drive to Swallows for lunch. Inside we found a menu with what seemed like hundreds of options, but thanks to our knowledgeable waitress we all ordered and received a very fine meal. After lots of chatter about our go kart experience and life in general, we departed Swallows and made our way home.
Enjoying lunch at Swallows On a sunny spring morning ten enthusiastic ladies of the PCV gathered outside Auscarts in Port Melbourne for the obligatory group photo (I think partly to prove that we were all there and actually giving it a go). We made our way inside the venue and some thought we had stepped into a nightclub rather than a Go Kart track, however the noise and fumes of the karts racing around the circuit soon made us realise we were in the right place. When all signed in, we were ushered to a back room for a safety briefing, after which it was noted by more than one that the instructor hadn’t told us which pedal was the accelerator and which one was the brake! Yes, just like a car, the brake was on the left and the accelerator on the right. Next it was into the unattractive hair nets, then on with the helmets and with some nervous giggles over the bridge to be assigned our karts. While being strapped in by the marshals, Lisa was told she needed a booster seat, just like her 3 year old daughter! One by one we were released onto the track under orange lights to familiarise ourselves with the track and karts. Unfortunately the
orange stayed on longer due to the breakdown of Petra’s kart on her first lap. It wasn’t long before Petra was in a new Kart and the lights turned green for the “racing” to begin. The track provided plenty of twists and turns, and while there was lots of overtaking, there were very few bumps and no spins or crashes. This probably made it very boring for the track marshals, but great for our first experience.
Thanks to all the ladies who attended, and a special thank you to Maria Del Gallo for firstly suggesting this event to the social committee and secondly organising it all. After helping organise last year’s Go Kart Challenge event, which are renowned for being very competitive, she thought a more relaxed go kart event for ladies might get some interest and be fun, and she was right!
As time went on, the twists and turns turned me green and after not improving after a few slow laps, I came in off the track early. (Note to all – This is why I decline all those passenger ride invites on President’s Day!). To everyone else’s credit they all made it to the end of our 25 minute session, completing between 30 and 38 laps each. The results were posted which showed Maria Del Gallo the winner with a fastest lap of 32.506, closely followed by Margaret Russell-Borg with 33.121. While we were all interested to see how we went, it was really just the opportunity to go out and give it a go (without the pressure of our men onlooking), which made it most enjoyable.

Annual Go Kart Challenge 2013! 12th September, 2013 rest to determine the starting positions in the 3 finals races. This is where the teeth would grind and the horns appear as the drivers battle for the flag where the best part of all crashes occurred in these race sessions. The track was really heating up by this stage as the drivers strived to be at the pointy end of the grid. The finals began with Consolation Final B, being taken out by Colin Anderson, followed by Harry Petsios in 2nd place and Andrew McVey in 3rd. The Consolation Final A was won by Ross Del Gallo, with Trevor Bolton coming in 2nd and Chris O’Keeffe finishing in 3rd.
Grand Final Podium This year the Annual Go Kart Challenge was held at Auscarts Racing in Port Melbourne for the third year running on the evening of Thursday the 12th of September 2013. This year’s event consisted of 10 groups of 3 drivers comprising of social members, competition members and guests who put their ability and nerve to the limits to try and achieve the fastest possible combined lap time for their respective teams. This meant that not only were the drivers competing against each other to take out the teams challenge, but they were all vying for the all-important lap record, set by Justin Davis in 2012 with a lap time of 28.088.
The final race was the Grand Final consisting of all the quickest drivers throughout the night. In the Grand Final, there was a hot battle out front between Dylan O’Keeffe and Tim Williams, trading blow for blow until an optimistic move by Tim up the inside of Dylan resulted in a 5 kart pile up with Dylan coming out victorious, followed by Alex Van Ravenswaaij in 2nd and in 3rd Jamie Lovett, meanwhile, the fastest lap time holder for the night, Robin Puc of Team Mario Kart, was comfortably bringing it home in last position on track after smashing the PCV Auscarts lap record, to set a time of 27.583 seconds.
Consolation Final A podium
The winning team of the night, with a combined fastest lap time of 28.167 seconds was the ‘Occasional Racers’ with a very close Second place going to Team ‘PFA’ with an average lap time of 28.188 seconds, and in third place Team John O’Keeffe average lap time of 28.349 seconds. Thank-you to all members and guests who attended for a great night and look forward to the next PCV Go Kart challenge!
The night began with each group completing a 10 lap qualifying session to sort out the grid positions for the 10 lap race, which was then used to sort out the big boys from the Consolation Final B podium

Mid Week Run to Daylesford 25th July 2013
A clear cold morning saw twelve 911s, including Brent Howard’s 964 Turbo, Ray Baty’s 3.2 Speedster, Alvaro Del Gallo’s 997 GT3, and the organiser, Neil Drew, with his 991C4S at the meeting point at Rockbank. There were also five Boxsters and three Caymans. A perusal of the car park revealed that an SC and a couple of 993s were also present. Two other interesting cars were Wayne St. Baker’s Aston Martin Vantage, and a friend of Neil’s, Cameron Thompson, in his Ferrari 308GTSi. After coffee Neil and Wayne briefed us on the run. There was an option of an extended drive of about fifty klicks which most of us completed. Mid week runs are less structured than Sunday runs so maps and instructions were minimal, but the route was clear, the lunch destination being the Wombat Hill Cafe in the Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens at Daylesford. With the large number of cars, the run was broken into two groups. Neil mentioned with a smile that the penalty for the first arrival at the destination was to climb the 74 feet high Pioneers Memorial Tower. Our group of about twelve cars left, keeping loosely together, and, as suggested by Wayne, ensuring that the subsequent car was visible before a major turn was made. Apart from a couple of minor hiccups and some U turns in the metropolis of Mollongghip, this seemed to work well for us.
With outside temperatures in single figures , the cars were running very efficiently, as evidenced by our rapid progress further west through Ballan and Gordon, no Gordon Hat Shoppe stop this time, and then quickly through the quaintly named farming districts of Bullarook, Mollongghip and Kooroocheang. Cruising in the cold clear winter morning on the almost deserted twisting and undulating country roads at the edge of the Central Highlands and passing through isolated farming communities under the surprised gaze of the occasional local was quite enjoyable. The temperature was still only about five degrees, but one member, Zoltan I believe, showed us all how a Carrera Cab should be used by keeping the roof down and enjoying the pure open air driving experience. Well done Zoltan. Shortly after passing through Werona, we turned south for the short run towards Daylesford. At an elevation of 2190 feet, the Botanical Gardens are the highest point in Daylesford, and with the Pioneers Memorial Tower on top, they are impossible to miss, one would think. But naturally some of us, including this scribe, managed to
drive straight past the marked entrance road, and so a hasty U turn was required. Parking was easy, and the cars looked spectacular grouped at the base of the Tower, taking up most of the car park and some of the approach road. One fit member, Dennis, climbed the 74 foot Tower to enjoy the view, but I think the rest of us were quite happy to stay below at the base. The sky had clouded over, and it was very cold, so a short walk brought us to the Wombat Cafe where our thirty three participants had lunch. After a relaxed couple of hours, it was time to depart. This was an excellent run. The country side was interesting and the roads were almost deserted. The terrain was sometimes challenging and the combination of tight and open corners followed by long straights suited our cars. Well done, Neil, for choosing the route and the venue.
The route was down Greigs Road and through Exford Weir where our Boxster, when given a bit of energy, squatted down and bit into the curves on the rise up the western side of the weir. We then proceeded through Rowsley and up the interesting Glenmore Road climb and then north through Ballan.

I only service cars for my friends... It doesn’t always start that way, but that’s how it ends up. We both own Porsches, we have shared values and interests. They’re skilled and committed to their careers, same here. When I started as an apprentice at Hamiltons over 15 years ago, it was bred into the Service Team to always go the extra mile, always strive for excellence. I call it the “Hamiltons Touch”, and it’s part of my DNA. My friends deal directly with me, I do the work, I answer their questions, I sort problems. They get the Hamiltons Touch without the price. … and I’m always looking for new friends. “the car ran beautifully...the whole car was feeling more refined… A very good outcome and satisfied customer.” Stephen Marshall “my wife is very happy with her Boxster’s performance and says it even sounds better... your follow up call was also greatly appreciated.” John Mitsy

Sunday morning at McDonalds, it must be another PCV run. The McDonalds Doncaster East carpark quickly filled with 7 Boxsters, 6 assorted 997s, including Alvaro and Maria Del Gallo’s gorgeous white 997 GT3, and James and Tracey Sanderson’s immaculate light blue 964 (with James carefully avoiding the speed bumps!). Baz Park messaged a late withdrawal as he was not well, we hope he’s recovering. We were joined by David O’Dwyer in his Boxster for the run, unfortunately David couldn’t join us for lunch but he made up the numbers for a 14 vehicle convoy. I noticed that a couple of grumpy mums at McDonalds were not too happy that our group of big kids had taken over the kids play room, I can only assume they hadn’t had their morning coffee. The weather looked OK, cloudy and quite warm, no rain expected, so some Boxsters went top down. We headed off down Blackburn Road, through Warrandyte, Research, Kangaroo Ground, Panton Hill, St Andrews and up the tight windy road towards Kinglake Central, navigating around some bicycle riders, to our coffee stop. Having filled up with McDonald’s coffee only an hour earlier, many of us just browsed through the Rotary farmers’ market instead, picking up some tasty snacks and farm fresh fruit and vegetable. We were lucky with the timing as the market is only held on the last Sunday morning of every month. The outside temperature thermometer showed 10 degrees as we reset trip meters and headed off through Kinglake West, Hazeldene, Flowerdale, Strath Creek, up the short hill climb, to Broadford, then towards Pyalong on some lovely sweeping country roads, finally turning right to head north up the Northern Highway through Tooborac and Heathcote to Flynn’s Wines. Allan and Kerry Hines were waiting for us at the winery as we pulled in around 12:30pm, with Kerry’s beautiful back Cayman R sitting in the car park. They only live 20 minutes from Heathcote
over 17 years, and how different periods of time in various new and old French Oak and American Oak barrels is used to impart some flavour into the wine. Over lunch many members purchased a bottle or glass of the James Flynn “Reserve” Shiraz which is normally only available to Flynn’s wine club members, and is not available for tasting. I have to say it was my pick of the wines we tasted, reason enough to join the wine club.
Checking pace notes at McDonalds prior to departure includes Brett Stevens, Alvaro Del Gallo, Steven Fisher and partner Karen. and saw no point driving all the way down to Doncaster and back, and I couldn’t argue with that. The winery car park discussion centred about what speed various 911 and Boxster spoilers go up and down, it was said the 997 spoiler goes up at 115 km/h and down at 80 km/h, while the 964 spoiler goes up at 80 km/h and pretty much stays up, with the Boxster similar to the 997. Of course as we didn’t exceed the 100km/h speed limit at any time no 997 or Boxster spoilers were actually deployed on the run… The GT3 and Cayman R owners were amused, their spoilers are always up! Greg Flynn the winery owner then led the wine tasting with generous amounts of Verdelho, Viognier, Sangiovese, a light Lewisroad Shiraz, then MC Shiraz passed to the eager members. Greg told us how the winery has been built up
As above at Rotary stalls next to car park, apple pies with Gay and Alf Carrigan
Lunch started with a bread board and marinated olives and olive oil, closely followed by the “Winemaker’s Platter” of sweet crispy pork strips, pancetta quiche, fried white cheese, chilli jam, more olives, cheese spread, biscuits and olive bread to share. Main course was alternate servings of Lamb Shank, Prawn Skewers, and Chicken Pie, and the friendly staff did an excellent job to try and give everyone their preferred choice of the 3 dishes. Talk dropped off dramatically as the meal was served so I can only guess that all the choices were as delicious as my lamb shank. Afterwards 3 choices of desert were offered, a yummy light Sticky Date pudding, a rich Chocolate Brownie cake or a Rhubarb Cake; and again I heard no complaints! To finish, we were offered our choice of espresso coffee or tea, or another glass of wine for some, and most people left around 4:00pm for the drive home after a thoroughly enjoyable run.

the King Lake signs. Then that big sign that says “KingLake National Forest 13km windy roads” came up. WooHoo! I rubbed my hands together, cranked up the stereo, tightened the seat belt and accelerated hard, until a damn Toyota Corolla came into view – Argggg – “Spirited driving” soon turned into “Non-spirited” driving, , however all participants showed great respect for the road rules and their PCV mates and in good team camaraderie, resisted the urge to overtake as the bends were too tight. After an absolutely miserable Saturday with rain all day, it was a very welcome surprise to see the sun shining upon us for our Sunday morning run to De Bortoli. Of course this meant that the drivers that weren’t bothered to wash and clean their cars (like me), were out early with the wash bucket. Lucky for them it was a very respectable 10.30am start! With the very busy breakfast bistro at “Little Henri” in Northcote, the smart ones were there early for a sumptuous breakfast and coffee, while the latecomers had to contend with a stool in the window. None the less we all gathered in the rear courtyard for our mandatory debrief, hand out of directions and a few hail Mary’s for the lovely weather, and the chequered flag came down and off we went. The 928’s were early off the line with the 944’s trailing in convoy. Of course we were not without mishap as 5 minutes into the run, the group had to pull over as ‘apparently’ the co-captain somehow gave out all the run notes without keeping one for himself. Still this gave us the chance to do a 7 Porsche pull away from the curb - what a sound. The run thru Eltham was quite non-eventful as the traffic took all the fun out of it, but that was short lived as we headed for the hills into Kangaroo Ground. A few fast and flat sections passed Panton Hill’s general store and followed 56

PARADE
Once out of the 13km of windy slow Toyota Corolla roads, we finally passed the Corolla and headed for the top of the Healesville- Kinglake Road ridge, which is a strange place indeed, as we went from sunny blue skies to drizzly dark grey foggy mountain pass mist. Of course this was fine for the guys who didn’t have their convertible roof down! (Has the damp dried out yet Tony and Mark?) The road back down was a fantastic way to finish off the run with a great stretch of the Porsche legs back into the Yarra Valley arriving just in time for wine & cheese tasting at the famous De Bortoli Winery.
The functions co-ordinator graciously allowed us to park in front of the homestead/ Restaurant, with all the Porsches backed into the grassy verge for a picture perfect stage and what a sight it was – even if it took a few attempts mastering the difficult wet grass, it was worth it. The gourmet cheese and matching wines to start us off were definitely worth waiting for. My favourite had to be the De Bortoli Noble one with Blue Cheese (St Agur,) wow what a flavour explosion in your mouth that was. The “Christmas in July” winter luncheon at De Bortoli Winery was scrumptious with a mixture of Tasting boards of seasonal anti-pasta or Gnocchi con Ragu di Maiale and the mains a mixture of seasonal fish pan seared fillet or Scotch Fillet -Braised & pressed rib, parsley crust, cavolo nero, fresh bean salad, balsamic emulsion sauce. With the formalities over, time for a few photo opportunities with some lovely friends, a bit more wine and a look around the winery, before heading home to relax. Thanks again to all those that participated and look forward to organizing the next Torque Tube run in November.

Run to Jindivick GT3/RS/RSR Register September 1, 2013
September’s GT3 Register event was a brunch run to the scenic town of Jindivick with our mid-morning refreshments to be taken at the delightful Jindivick Harvest Kitchen. When planning the register calendar for the year I was surprised to find an ‘empty’ slot in early September. Only recently did I discover that September 1 was in fact Fathers Day. Oh well on with the show. Even if we get just a few cars, a good time would be had by all. Early on, bookings were slow to arrive (as expected) but closer to the day entries relatively flooded in. So on a sunny spring Sunday morning some thirteen cars and 18 drivers / navigators arrived for the day. Six GT3s, four Boxsters, and three Turbos made up the field. PCV members are renowned for travelling long distances to enjoy club events and the fellowship of other members. But we may have a new record holder. One Vince D’Rozario decided to attend the September 1 run in his 997-2 GT3 Clubsport. Nothing special in that I hear you say, except that Vince lives in Singapore! The navigator-friendly route for the day (about 111 kms) took us out on the Maroondah Highway through Lilydale, then turning towards Warburton. After the recent winter rains it was no surprise that the pastures, paddocks and vineyards all looked green and splendid from the road. A right turn at Woori Yallock on to the Pakenham Road had us upping the speed and enjoying some open and sweeping roads this time through more heavily forested areas. Just short of Pakenham we diverted on to the old Princes Highway, crossing the new freeway to Nar Nar Goon to join the Railway Road for a straight sprint for a few kilometres. Crossing the freeway again we joined the Labertouche Road before turning onto Jacksons Track for the uphill, winding sprint to Jindivick. This was one of the few runs that I have been on where we managed to stay pretty much in convoy for the majority of the route and looking in my 58

rear vision mirror, the cars made a great sight snaking back around the curves. Once at the brunch venue, tea and coffee orders were quickly taken and the group settled down for some serious conversation and local produce. Charred bread accompanied tasting plates of assorted dips, spreads, pickled vegies, salmon and dusted prawns, then the charcuterie plates arrived. Ham, prosciutto, terrine, chorizo and more. A sumptuous and tasty spread for modest dollars I thought. By the volume of the conversation and the rapidly emptying platters, I concluded that a good time was had by all. At the conclusion of the brunch, some folks took the opportunity to visit the nursery next door. One couple, who shall remain nameless, decided to buy a six foot tall metal garden ornament and
take it home in their 911. There was much mirth in the car park watching various permutations of said piece sticking out of the sunroof, out of the passenger’s window before finally settling on dash to parcel shelf location inside the car. I assume everything arrived home in one piece, including the leather interior! Thanks to Vince, Brent & Ann, Fred & Monika, Barry & Annie, Ken & Harriet, Peter, Frank, Malcolm & Steve, Chris & Julie, Dejan and Robin for coming along and making the GT3 Register Father’s Day run a success.

Time for the Turbos to reciprocate and host our little brothers to a scenic alpine experience followed by a gourmet lunch. Combined Boxster/Cayman and Turbo Registers Sunday 21st July
On Sunday the 21st of July the Turbo register was delighted to host the Boxster & Cayman register in response to the magnificent run they put on for us on Sunday the 5th of May. We did call it the “Winter run” and WOW did it live up to its name. We set off from McDonalds on the corner of Wellington and Springvale Rds with 16 cars, including 7 Boxsters, 2 Cayman, 4 Turbos and 3 911s (an SC, a 964 and a 996). It was a cold morning registering 7 degrees at 9am but at least sunny after the two very cold and wet days prior. In the briefing we provided an overview of the run basically some back roads through to Healesville for morning coffee and cakes at the All Moto Cafe then the classical run of the Black spur up to Marysville followed by down the Reefton Spur to Warburton, where we would lunch at Oscar’s on the Yarra (which is owned by club member Michael Loccisano). In the briefing at McDonalds we pointed out post the cold snap to keep an eye out for ice across the top of the range, in hindsight this was well understated as it turned out to be almost a European style tour with a reasonably clear road but a fair dump of snow on both sides. The back roads through to Healesville provided some magnificent country scenery with a crisp sunny morning providing the perfect backdrop, with us all arriving at the All Moto Cafe for the chance to catch-up on conversation over coffee and cakes. At morning tea In Healesville we were in sunshine and circa 9 degrees and at least one Boxster dropping the top, but as we started the climb up the Black spur the temperature plummeted and across the top of the range it went as low as 1 degree with drizzle and snow, thankfully there were no mishaps. It is unusual to see that much snow on this stretch of road, however I can also testify that the new Boxster top can be raised whilst travelling at a reasonable speed. I must say I was grateful to be driving my all wheel drive turbo which provided a degree of 60

comfort re traction, and I think the mid engine brigade looked at ease, however I felt a bit sorry for the cars with no traction control and in particular Brent Howard (Captain Slow) in his magnificent 964 turbo who I watched nervously nursing it across the top and part way down till we cleared the snow line. Once we were clear of the snow line the pack could relax and open up a little on the remaining twisters. An hour later at the bottom of the Reefton Spur we were back in sunshine and a balmy 11 degrees (comparatively), bunching up for parade line through the Warburton township before arriving at Oscar’s on the Yarra for lunch. When we arrived at Oscar’s I was expecting some criticism for mapping an alpine component
into the run but to my surprise everyone was ecstatic on the whole experience and after all let’s not forget our cars were designed for driving in these types of conditions. The gourmet lunch was sensational in all aspects including the venue’s outlook, friendly service and quality food and wine – not to mention the personal meet and greet by the Chef. Our host Carl did point out that we were fortunate to benefit from them testing the menu on the Modern Register a few weeks before (thanks Geoffrey). I would seriously recommend that anyone looking for a good weekend drive/ lunch look at taking this route and pre book in for Lunch at Oscars.
