I refer to the dilemma I wrote about in the last issue in which I was trying to decide which Porsche to buy next after having a few 3.2’s a 968, 993 and Cayenne in the family. Several members gave me their valued opinions on what to buy and one even sent me details of his 997 which is for sale! I missed out on low mileage silver 993 last month, but as it happens it is probably for the best. Due to a change in circumstances since the last issue I may have to put off my purchase for a year or two as we are eagerly expecting our second child in April. I guess the GTI will have to suffice as daily transport for the near future. Hopefully the prices of 997s will have dropped sufficiently by then. Apologies to all the car dealers I sent enquiries to through CarSales.com As Christmas fast approaches we are busily putting the final torches on this summer issue. Michael O’Brien is burning the midnight oil writing the story on the Annual Ball.

Unfortunately we could not make it this year but I look forward to reading how Elvis, Elliot Goblet and Jellybean addiction performed - I hear it was a great night. For this issues “What’s in your Garage” Will and I visit the stables of Greg and Robin Humphries to report on Greg’s trusty Porca’s and Robin’s trusty steeds. Our cover story event was a ripper with the PCV lunching and displaying it’s cars at the MCG to celebrate 50 years of the 911. There was a great and varied display of the 911s on show and I was one of the lucky four to display their cars on the hallowed turf which was a real buzz! The Club’s Social and Competition Committees and Register Captains have also been working hard to bring you in this issue: Presidents day, Spring Run, Show “n”shine at Motorclassica, Haunted Hills and Register Runs. If you have not been involved with any events this year make sure you don’t miss out on participating next year, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. It never ceases to amaze me how professional the Club and its events are run. Thank you to Will Darvall and Felix for their major contributions to the magazine this year and as always a big thank you to all who contributed to this issue. president’s message Greetings and welcome to the prospect of lots of summer motoring in your Porsche! The year has certainly finished off with a flurry of major club activities with Motorclassica, the 50th Anniversary of the 911, President’s Day, the Annual Dinner Dance, and still to come – the Summer Run. Motorclassica saw us this year with around 40 cars on show, ours being by far the largest club display there. We had some very well presented Porsches in all their waxed and polished glory as well as a small number of track-prepared cars that had been equally lovingly prepared but still displaying a few scars attesting to their on-track battles. We seemed to attract a substantial level of public interest and during the afternoon in particular we had a lot of the public weaving up and down our lines of Porsches. The 50th Anniversary of The 911 event was a great success at the MCG with over 70 cars on display and more than 150 people in attendance. We had a long line of 911’s on both sides of the entrance way to the ground and five special 911 models grouped right at the entrance. We were also strongly supported by our sister club, the 901 Register, with their very early models adding to the sense of history. Finally, four special 911’s were also set up on the verge of the hallowed turf of the arena and made for some stunning photos. Everyone there had a great time absorbing both the atmosphere and the great lunch that followed. For this year’s Annual Dinner Dance we tried something a little bit different in that we had a professional MC/comedian, an Elvis impersonator and a programme that aimed at an evening of two parts, the first providing quick but nonetheless substantial coverage of our club awards, and a second half with music and dancing. The venue also allowed us the luxury of an adjacent room into which people could escape from the music, if they desired some talking time, during the dance periods. Those who attended thought the combination was a real winner. While some were initially sceptical at the idea of an ersatz Elvis, in the end everyone was blown away by his singing, his great presence and his adept interaction with the audience. I overheard two separate conversations where people said he was “better than the real Elvis”! The final competition inspired event was President’s Day. We all turned up on the day with a sense of foreboding after seeing weather SOCIAL SUB-COMMITTEE Social Director Julia Anderson Rowan Burnett Janet Conheady Alvaro Del Gallo Neil Drew Peter Harrison Michael O’Brien Wayne St Baker

forecasts all the preceding week of a very rainy day. As it turned out, it rained once in the first session and then was dry for the rest of the day. As a result, a great time was had by all, including the celebratory drinks at the end. A big bonus was that not one driver was sent home early for having a “moment” on the track, which from my memory is a first. Your committee has been giving a lot of thought this year (as I know has been the case previously) to changes to the format of the PCV Dinner Dance to better balance the two primary objectives of the evening. One is to provide an awards night for members and the other is to provide the equivalent social function of an annual club ball. We have been giving this so much thought because of the difficulty of finding the correct balance between the two in a single evening. Every year we receive some feedback that indicates we have not given due deference to the awards and their recipients, but then we also receive other feedback that we are taking too long to run that part of the evening to the detriment of the social and entertainment objectives. On the best nights we get about the same level of complaints on each of those issues, which we interpret as getting the balance about right. Until now, we have resisted the temptation to split the evening into two completely separate events because that also has a down side. Firstly, this is the only activity in the whole year in which we bring all elements of the club together and we don’t want to give up that opportunity lightly. Secondly, we are also unsure about the level of patronage we would achieve at two such separate events. If either were poorly attended it would be seen as an abject failure. Finally, it would be a challenge to wind back the clock to a combined event for subsequent years if separate events were to prove unsuccessful. We are currently in the process of resolving such a decision. We can’t put it off much longer due to the lead time required to book appropriate venues. Your committee will keep you informed. As I write this article the Summer Run is fast approaching and I’m looking forward to the anticipated exhilarating (but safe) drive down to the Portsea Pub via the usual mix of interesting back roads. I could think of a lot of worse ways to finish off the year with PCV.

social corner Wow, wow!!! Welcome to another Social Corner. I say Wow! Because I cannot believe it’s been 12 months since I wrote my first Social Report, and I say Wow again because of the events that have been held over the past 12 months especially those that have only recently been completed. I hope most of you have been able to partake in at least one of the events held throughout the year, the Social Committee members have put huge amounts of efforts in bringing these events to you. I am sad to announce that Michael O’Brien has chosen to retire from our Social Committee. Michael being Social Director himself has been an integral force behind the Social Committee being so successful and with sadness I thank Michael for all of his work and efforts. October Club Night & AGM The AGM was held with full formalities, including the Presidents Report & Financial review. Upon the completion of the AGM the club night was held with around 140 members in attendance for the German Oktoberfest themed evening. Being Oktoberfest of course there was much German beer that was snapped up very enthusiastically. Lisa and Carly secured our entertainment for the evening in which featured club member Roswitha Klopfer and the Austrian Singers of Melbourne of which Roswitha is also a member. Chocolates were given to acknowledged those that has made some fantastic efforts to come dressed in theme. Roswitha provided a heartfelt account of how she met her husband Karl-Heinz, their decision to journey from the Black Forest and why they called Australia home for many years. This story has been published in a German book of stories courage. The Austrian Singers of Melbourne provided 5 songs, 2 prior to Roswitha and 3 following. Their sound was very traditional and well rehearsed, with beer in hand you could close your eyes and imagine being in front of an open fire with the snow falling outside upon streets of an early Austrian village. Spring Run: Michael Bailey organised a wonderful event and even organising for the rain to stay away at key points. Morning tea was held at the Newstead CFA where again we were very spoilt with a magnificent selection of food, the ladies even organised take away packs for some of the members. The station captain provided a fabulous history of the town and CFA including how Newstead continually caught fire back in the gold rush days. The full account is told in this edition of the club magazine. Show ‘n’ Shine: PCV once again teamed up with RACV Motorclassica for this year’s PCV Show ‘n’ Shine event. PCV put on a magnificent presentation of cars amongst the abundance of motoring delights in and around the stunning Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton. Read all about the event also in this edition. Thanks to all that attended.
50th Anniversary of the 911: What an event!!! The full story is also featured in this edition of the club magazine where you’ll get to read all about this special event that was held at the MCG. With thanks to Michael Bailey we were extremely lucky to have been allowed 4 cars to be displayed upon the hallowed turf with a further 7 cars representing each model editions on the concourse to welcome our guests into the MCG, one of these cars was even the first 911 brought into Australia, thanks to Stuart Kay and Michael Browning for making this happen. A further 70 cars were displayed in model designations throughout the Yarra Car Parks just outside the entrance with over 50 of these being 911’s and included a selection from the Type 901 register who joined our event with a magnificent display.
Tasmania Tour 2014: Michael Bailey has been able to finalise details of this premier event for 2014. Return Sail with the Sprit of Tasmania in a twin inside cabin including standard car each way. 5 Nights in 4 star accommodations have been arranged that includes many of the events meals and entertainment consisting of: Gordon River Cruise, Port Arthur Historic Site Entry, National Parks Pass.
Annual Dinner: An incredible evening was held at the Langham hotel….. yes the story is also in this magazine edition. Michael O’Brien, Carly and Lisa organised a premier event with many attendees rating it as the best Annual Dinner yet. Unfortunately our attending numbers weren’t what we hoped due to a number of reasons including an event at Philip Island that had a number of people otherwise committed, this is one of the issues with needing to book so far in advance to secure a venue.
On behalf of PCV I am very grateful for the support that our sponsors have provided throughout 2013.
Our MC Elliot Goblet kept us under control and giggling wildly, Peter Harrison conducted the welcomes and presentation of some special awards including Club Member of the Year of which I’m very proud that our very own Michael Bailey was the extremely well deserving winner, congratulations Michael and thank you for your extraordinary efforts throughout the year. Tony Carolan and Andrew Bonwick wrapt up the year in motorsport and presented awards to our very talented drivers. Entertainment kicked off with an Elvis tribute performer of which was thoroughly entertaining as Elvis worked the crowd and was an instant hit exceeding Elvis expectations. I was then privileged to hit the stage and present the Participant of the Year awards with our major sponsor Andrew McCathie before taking off the bow tie and taking out the dancing component of the evening in front of Jellybean Addiction. The dance floor was full and much dancing capped off a well ran event. Many thanks again to Michael, Carly & Lisa. Once again and with thanks to survey responses both before and after the event, there will be more changes to the format for 2014. Of course no matter what we do it won’t please everybody but the best interests of the club will be at heart, it was gratifying to receive the very positive feedback for this year’s event. Forthcoming events: Welcome to Summer Run - December the 8th: Michael O’Brien has organised our last Social Run of the year with the Welcome to Summer Run that will take us to the Portsea Hotel after morning tea being held at the Pearcedale CFA. This event will be covered in next year’s 1st edition of Porsche Parade and I’m looking forward to this final PCV event for the year of which I know will be meticulously organised by Michael.
This tour is restricted to a maximum of 40 cars and the PCV website shows the detailed Itinerary including the optional upgrades and extensions on offer. Pricing is around $2120 per person twin share and is currently open for bookings. Participant of the Year Award: Will be back again next year.
First Prize – Frank Deak - Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre Award: Yokohama tyres of the winner’s choice to the value of $2,000. Second Prize Ken Anson – Porsche Cars Australia Award: Items of the winner’s choice from the PCA Selection Department to the value of $400. Third Prize – Brent Howard – Nillumbik Cellars Award: Wine of the winner’s choice from Nillumbik Cellars to the value of $200. Thanks again to our sponsors and please keep them in mind when shopping for such products. Social Committee: Our current Social Committee is made up of Adrian Nelson, Avaro Del Gallo, Maria Del Gallo, Carly Pasco, Lisa Gillespie, Janet Conheady, Julia Anderson, Leon Christodulaki, Neil Drew, Wayne St Baker, Peter Harrison, Michael Bailey & Rowen Burnett. With thanks also to the contributions of Don Ballingall. This team is very passionate about providing PCV with premier events and works very hard to ensure you have a good selection of quality events to attend and make the most of your Porsche and interaction with fellow enthusiasts. Club Night Registering via the Kiosk: Please continue to register for club nights using our new kiosk. To date this has assisted with catering requirements and enables us to effectively manage PCV funds. Whilst you’re on there take a look at the club merchandise that’s for sale. With thanks: Acknowledgement and thanks to Pamela and all at Porsche Cars Australia, to Thomas and his staff at Porsche Centre Melbourne and to Steve and his staff at Porsche Centre Brighton for their support and assistance with events and club nights. Once more to our other sponsors in Traction Tyre & Suspension Centre and Nillumbik Cellars. As always in this very active club special mention thanks goes out to Carly and Lisa for their efficient and thorough work throughout the year. Thank you again for supporting our club and events, I look forward to seeing you for our Summer BBQ in February 2014. Regards, Felix Rieniets, Social Director

from race control The competition year ended up with the last competition event a hill climb at Bryant Park, Haunted Hills followed by the non-competition but very enjoyable final event at Sandown for President’s Day. Haunted hills did not look like attracting a big number of entries, so as mentioned in the last report, we decided to join with the WRX Club and run this as a joint day. This worked out very well, as being a hill climb, we didn’t have the requirement to run cars in groups and we were able to intermingle the PCV and WRX vehicles without any concern. As is always the case in these joint events, each club learns something from the other and in this case we adopted the WRX approach to letting people selforganise their running order based on sequential rear window numbers that were allocated on registration. The general consensus was that it was a very successful day with most entrants getting more running time than on previous PCV events. Although most of the class champions were settled before Haunted Hills, it was great to see the Club Outright Championship go down to the last run of the last event with Bob Hawker and Peter Fitzgerald
matching each other to the 1/100 of a second until Bob edged slightly ahead on the last run to take out this championship.
Congratulations to all our Championship Award winners, you have again shown what a great competition this is.
President’s Day went off very well with over 180 passengers signing on to risk life and limb. However it ended up an absolutely incident free day and no drivers were sent home for on track discretions. Even the weather was kind to us after an initial scare.
Stay tuned and have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Tony Carolan, Competition Director
Over the past few weeks the Competition Committee has been doing the usual review of the rules and a smaller sub group has been looking at how cars are classed. The objectives are to promote fair competition that attracts more people to participate, whilst not adding to the expense to prepare a car. The results of these reviews should be published in the next few weeks. Numbers at competition events have been a challenge throughout 2013 and in addition to running joint events with other clubs we will be looking at other incentives and changes to both increase interest and flexibility for our competitors. The 2014 calendar is shaping up quite well with 3 Phillip Island events, 3 Sandown, 2 Winton, DECA and Haunted Hills already firmed up. Broadford and Calder options are still being explored. Keep checking your Club Events Calendar on the website.

Only one day out from the calendar date of 911, Sunday the 1Oth of November was chosen by PCV to host the much anticipated PCV celebration of the 50th Anniversary tribute to what many of us regard as the most remarkable car to have ever been produced regardless of it’s model designation. To remind us of the timeless beauty that the Stuttgart gods have bestowed upon us for the past 50 years, attendees were treated to a feast of modern and classic versions of this motoring icon that covered each of the model registers both on and in front of our greatest and most iconic sporting arena the MCG. The morning started quite crisply, some enjoyed coffee to warm up, others were warmed by the excitement of having their vehicle upon the hallowed turf or being permitted to stand upon the legendary MCG to photograph this spectacular moment. The four chosen vehicles spanned the decades in John Orchards 1965 901, Ron Widdison’s G Series Carerra CS, Michael O’Brien’s stunning 993 Turbo and Neil Drew’s new 991 baby. A further seven vehicles were lined up on the concourse of the ‘G’ to complete the full model representation and we were extremely fortunate with thanks to Stuart Kay and Michael Browning to have the first ever RHD 911 in Australia take the pride of place in this display. The magnificent vehicles making up the display were Henry Arundel’s G Series, Michael Dennis’s 930, Marcus Lethlean’s 964, Andrew Bonwick’s 993, Alf Carrigan’s 996 and Arthur Spyropoulos’s 997 GT3 RS. PCV were joined by the Type 901 register who brought a stunning selection of 901’s that resulted in a presentation of a further 70

vehicles immediately opposite the concourse display in the Yarra Car Parks. The display was comprised of over 50 911’s and offered a stunning selection of cars for PCV members to mingle amongst and for members of the public to admire. After much mingling and taking of photos it was off to lunch in the Harrison Room within the MCG where we were treated to spectacular views over the hallowed turf. Members were welcomed by our President Peter Harrison and a wonderful buffet luncheon was enjoyed by all before we were treated by our esteemed speaker Michael Browning the well-respected motoring journalist & Porsche enthusiast. Michael took us all on the journey of the creation of the 9l I & recanted many stories of the early days including Alan
Hamilton’s racing achievements followed by the history of the 911’s evolution that was set to a magnificent selection of photographs never seen before by many of the attendees. A thank you to all attendees & participants who arrived early for the displays and to Carly for all of her hard work with the event was delivered by Felix whilst coffee and tea was served before the magnificent collection of Porsches made their way home to be tucked safely away in their garages.

what’s in your garage?
Greg at home with his collection
Greg and Robin Humphries have different horses for different courses, from Western Pleasure to Phillip Island. Eh? Read on. This dynamic duo have enthusiastically contributed to PCV since joining in 2002, after buying their first Porsche, a Red/ Black Boxster S 3.2 6 speed. They live on 18 acres on the Mornington Peninsula, where they have room to house, graze and indulge their horsepower and horse power. Robin soon joined the marshals group, helping to pave the way for other women. She gained the CAMS Club Chief qualification, which enabled her to join the small group of senior
Greg has always been a Porsche fan, growing up with posters on his wall. He initially took to the track with the Boxster on a Club drive day at Calder, being coached by Theo Mihelakos (then Club champion and Outright champion in his first coming), which infected him with the competition bug. 5 years ago, he upgraded to a GT3 and improved his skills with further driver training. He happily runs in the lower half of the very competitive Open Class. For the last few years he has also been the GT3, RS and RSR Register Captain.
“The Turbo has lag, feels older and doesn’t brake and steer as well. The GT3 flows”. officials who control the competition events. Not only that, she later took on the organization of the marshals for each event, which she has done for the last 3 years, competetently and thoroughly organizing a cohesive group, which we hope she will continue next year (please, please?). But wait, there’s more: for the last 2 years, she has agisted the Club van at her property, looked after its packing and stocking for each event and usually driven it to meetings!
The 4 wheeled horsepower. The Boxster is Robin’s car, still with Essendon number plates. Surely, anyone in their right mind would have ashamedly thrown them into the rubbish bin by now! She drives all the cars, with the GT3 her second choice. The 2003 996 4S Tip has been Greg’s daily driver, with a (comparatively) benign and tractable 235kW (320 HP).

The ’97 993 Turbo in Metallic Schwarz (black)/ Grey interior with 6 speed, was acquired 6 years ago and still only shows 61 K’s. Remarkably, this seductive body was still built on the 2272 mm wheelbase, unchanged since 1969, although the track is considerably wider! This means that the interior feels quite snug, compared to 996 and later models, which have had a couple of increases in wheelbase; to 2350 mm for 996 and 2451 mm for 991. Power is 300kW (408 HP), empty DIN weight (all fluids, no driver) is 1500 kg and factory acceleration is 4.5 seconds to 100k’s. The ’99 996 GT3, an ex-Nations Cup (preGT3 Challenge and Carrera Cup) car, is Greg’s competition car. Power is 270kW (360 HP), empty DIN weight is 1350kg and factory acceleration is 4.8 seconds to 100k’s. So, the Turbo is more powerful and much heavier, and accelerates quicker. How do they compare on the road? Says Greg: “the Turbo has lag, feels older and doesn’t brake and steer as well. The GT3 flows”. In the garage is a Lexus GS430, for that comfortable and quiet daily drive. The 4 legged horse power.
and all accentuated by American style “bling” on the horse’s gear. The Hunter variation is done in English gear. Robin and her Quarter horse mare, “She’s Magic” (Lily), have achieved great success in the last 2 years, winning back to back Hunter Under Saddle at State level and finishing third for this, as well as Hunt Seat Equitation, in Australia. Dressage is done with “Denban Kaleidoscope” (Scooter), a highly qualified Appaloosa. These beautiful horses were supposedly seen by Alexander the Great, when crossing Mongolian valleys.

Robin feels that, unlike competing with inanimate cars, competing with horses means that there are 2 sets of brains, bodies and attitudes to manage! These precious steeds travel First Class in their magnificent luxuriously equipped 1800 kg float (2800kg with 2 horses), towed with serious grunt by a 2535kg 2007 Land Cruiser V8 Turbo Diesel! Robin and Greg exemplify the varied interests and contribution that hundreds of people bring to the remarkably active PCV!
Robin grew up interested in athletics, ballroom dancing and has “always had horses”. She competes in two disciplines of horsemanship; Western and Dressage. Western is a day long competition, involving halter events, patterns and cones, Western Pleasure (walk, trot, canter, where the horse is a “pleasure” to ride and observe),

We promised to deliver on a new formula based upon the criteria derived from the survey and other feedback from our 2012 Annual Dinner. New Band, Quality Venue, and a Professional Master of Ceremonies were the minimum requirements. In addition the need for quiet time – the ability to talk, short fast paced presentations, and high quality food all must be provided. One thing we always have is great friends and people ready for a great night.

I’m really pleased to say that the venue really delivered with a superb quality of food and wine, with 88% of survey responses scoring 5 out of 7, or above, and 72% of responses rating the venue as Excellent.
Our presentations were split to recognise the importance of our major awards, and our class awards were kept fast paced by Andrew Bonwick and Tony Carolyn. Our speeches were kept to a minimum.
Our new entertainment was provided by Damian Mullin as Elvis Forever, who provided two sets of “Elvis” and the band Jellybean Addiction, headed by our own Felix Rieniets. Damian provided the lighter entrainment during our club presentations, and Jellybean Addiction started our dance party from 11pm till our 1:00am close. 82% of our survey responses rated the entertainment 6 out of 7 or above, with 76% rating this as excellent. Elliot Goblet and Will Darvall share a joke
Somewhat inexplicable were our numbers attending. Unfortunately we had a clash with the “Island Magic” motor sport event held by the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club over the 30th November and 1st December, which probably accounted for about 20 members and guests being unable to attend. But with only about 150 people attending it does become difficult to hold such a lavish event. The Social, Competition, and General committees will endeavour to determine on your behalf the best way to proceed, and will investigate alternative approaches to the 2014 event. This will include the option of holding two separate events, a Dinner Dance and a Presentation night. There are risks associated with both approaches, and so I would encourage anyone with strong views to express those to a committee member, so that your views may be factored into any decision to be made.

President’s Day is always something to look forward to, where at the end of what can sometimes seems to be a long competition season, we get the opportunity to share our passion with family and friends. I’m not sure it makes up to them for the many weekends spent away competing, but it does allow us to show them why we love it so much. For the uninitiated President’s Day, is an end of season track day where the competition drivers not only have the opportunity to, but are required to take passengers whenever they go out on the track. Of course safety is paramount and speeds need to be kept to 80% of racing speed. This still means that many cars are reaching over 200kph at two locations each lap. Drivers are required to exercise a high degree of self-control and any off track excursions or spins earn immediate exclusion for the day. Nevertheless the day is always very popular and this year we had over 180 passengers that took their bravery pills and thoroughly
enjoyed the experience. There were probably an equal number of visitors, like my wife Chris, who weren’t interested in going on the track (I don’t know why), but came along to spectate and to enjoy the fine fare of Argentinean BBQ, German sausages and good coffee. This year we returned again to Sandown which seems to be the most popular venue for President’s Day probably due to its close proximity to Melbourne. From the start of the day there was a little concern about the weather and all through registration and scrutineering we had our fingers crossed. We got through these without a drop, but immediately at the conclusion of the drivers briefing, the heavens opened and we started with a thoroughly wet track. This didn’t bother some hardy souls and proceedings commenced on schedule at 9:30, however from the look on some of the passengers faces as they exited the cars, it definitely added to their “experience”.
Thankfully the weather soon cleared up, the track dried out and the remainder of the day went off without incident, except for one car that was excluded for exceeding the noise limit. We are always happy to see a day where nobody is sent home for bad behaviour. Phil Treloar was challenged for what was seen as a slightly ambitious (as per the day’s rules) passing manoeuvre, but as it turned out it was on his daughter Melanie, so we figured that he certainly wouldn’t be taking any risks. At the conclusion of the track activity we all retired for some nibbles and drink and a lot of conversation about the day and the season past.

SUMMER 2013

October 6, the first day of daylight saving for this summer……….wonder how many will be late? The early drive down was easy going & it was good to see the Porsches obeying all speed limits. The twin black & orange 911’s of Richard Thompson & Mark Smundin, along with Ian van Driel in his 911, put on a great display of synchronized driving along the freeway – “a bit of Porsche poetry in freeway motion” On arrival at the track, surprisingly, all drivers were there on time, but still beaten by our ever-reliable team of marshals – are they that keen or did they wind their clocks forward by 2 hours!! At this point we must make mention of Robin & her team of merry helpers – without them, us self-proclaimed “race drivers” couldn’t get out on the track & play. (In fact, it wasn’t that long ago that the drivers had to marshal – just shows how far PCV has developed) So, to all our marshals & helpers, a big “Thankyou” for your outstanding work & support throughout the year. Due to a recent decline in competitors by most car clubs, PCV this time invited the WRX Club to make up the numbers. The total mix was 29 Porsches, 7 WRX, 1 each of Liberty, Forester & Lancer Evo plus 3 Mazda MX5’s. Interesting to see PCV member Jon Lawson punting a WRX - traitor! The weather, as usual at this venue, looked ominous all day with rain clearly visible in the valley to the west, but as (nearly) always, the management of PCV events assured us a dry day & they were right again! Has Andrew Bonwick got connections “upstairs”? A few drivers walked the track, observing the tightness & camber of the corners & commenting on various approach lines, braking points & trying to decide which gear to run in, 1st, 2nd or 3rd………..not driving suits or jeans & shirts - although this discussion was heard amongst some drivers! After scrutineering, the driver briefing & introductions of new PCV members & our new WRX friends were done, then followed a dash for the egg & bacon rolls.

Now onto the track……….a conga line of cars for a sighting lap, then into the competition. Interesting to see the guys in the MX5’s drove their slow familiarisation laps wearing hoodies – soft helmets in soft top cars?
the day Fitzy helped Bob to get better tyres on his car & during the last session both agreed to go out one behind the other each time so as not to get a warmer tyre advantage. Great sportsmanship from 2 very competitive guys.
With 2 cars on the circuit at the same time, half a lap apart, this kept the runs going at a rapid rate – not too much time to lounge around between runs. First up, 4 timed runs in the outer clockwise direction, followed by 3 figure eight runs & lastly 3 clockwise short runs. All formats allow for speed ascending a hill, looking skyward, with the descending track out of sight until you reach the crest – does it go straight, left or right? A challenging test of one’s skill, nerves & memory! Apart from one 911 locking them up & missing the first turn (well done Cameron), plus a GT3 demonstrating to the WRX crew that he too could do a bit of “bush bashing”, followed by a most graceful pirouette in the grass & back onto the track (nice one Rick), there were no incidents – only one GT3 broken front spoiler & 2 dented egos. Greg Muller got a tow back to the pits after dropping second gear 100 metres from the finish line, not from running out of fuel as was suggested. Greg is always keen to win, but not running on the smell of an oily rag!
Sally Anne Hains was our PCV most improved driver, lopping 10 seconds off her previous times at Haunted Hills. WRX competition secretary Daniel Sedgman won most improved for his club. The final competition was a head-to-head Porsche/WRX best of 3 blast between the GT3 of our Brett Helmers & the Liberty RS of Dan Sedgman. The Porsche won the first 2 runs by around .5 seconds & the Liberty won the last by .07 seconds, leaving Porsche the winner……..but only just, PHEW!!
The Peter Fitzgerald & Bob Hawker duel was on in earnest, as both were vying for Outright Champion. After the first 2 sessions they were exactly equal to 1/100th second. In the last session, the clockwise short circuit, Fitzy was quicker than Hawkeye in the first 2 runs, but Bob finally pipped him by 0.11 second! During
PCV outright results for the day were 1st Bob Hawker by only 0.11 secs. from Peter Fitzgerald, with Nick Karnaros third. Class results were: “Open” – 1st Fitzy, 2nd Greg Muller, 3rd Rick Mensa (with replacement front spoiler!) “M1” – 1st Bob Hawker, 2nd Nick Karnaros, 3rd Brett Helmers. “M2” – Ray Wood. “GT Class” was won by President Peter Harrison, 2nd Simon Zettl, 3rd Richard Batchelor. “A Class” winner was Graham Williams. “B Class” – 1st Richard Thompson, 2nd Mark Smundin, 3rd Brent Howard. “C Class” – 1st Cameron Goodyear (even after missing a corner!), 2nd Michael O’Brien, 3rd Ian van Driel. “D Class” - 1st Garry Voges, 2nd Phil Cox, 3rd Garry Saber.
To finish the day, event director Tony Carolan opened the esky & invited everyone to enjoy a cool drink & presented Sally Anne, Brett Helmers & Daniel Sedgman each with their winners champagne. Sally Anne assured us she wouldn’t open hers until she got home! A good move as the boys in blue turned up just as we finished – not looking for drink drivers, but to throw the paddy wagon around the track!! (albeit too late) All in all, another fun Porsche play day. Although some PCV year-end results were already sorted, it was good to see these drivers still make the effort to get to Haunted Hills & compete. It certainly is a great hill climb circuit, testing the cars’ handling & the drivers’ ability. For those who haven’t been to Haunted Hills, give it a go – it’s more fun than you may think & our Porsches love it!!

THE CHEQUERED FLAG IS OUT....... I have just finished my third season as Marshal Co-ordinator. Wow, what a variety of experiences and people who make up this wonderful team of volunteers. They actually put their hands up to go and stand on the side of a race-track for the best part of nine hours, in all types of weather, so that the competitive drivers of the club can perform. Unbelievable!! Having said that, it IS the only way to get close to a fast vehicle, smell the fumes, hear the noise and watch the lines driven. Our team is very professional and I have been delighted to hear the positive comments from other clubs when we have co-run an event, or even gone to help elsewhere. When working with another club, it is interesting to listen to their expectations and see the ‘gaps‘ between us and them. It can be a real learning curve on both sides. We have worked alongside the Victorian Flag Team and also the Motorcycle Marshaling Team, giving more good insights into other operations. Some of our members even work at the Grand Prix. The tracks are slowly installing some type of shelter and seating, not that you get a lot of time to sit. The team goes out with baskets of nibblies and hot or cold water because it can be a long time between meals and you need that ‘something’ to warm you up or hydrate. Trying to do a ‘long-range‘ weather forecast can be challenging and usually ends up with requests to ‘layer‘ clothes and make sure hats, gloves (preferably fingerless style) as well as waterproof pants are included. I was so used to this that I actually found myself emailing instructions to Barb and Will Darvall when they were walking across Britain recently. An added bonus of being co-ordinator is that I get to drive around all the tracks. Ok, so I’m not breaking land speed records, but I just love seeing what the guys and gals get to compete on. They haven’t let me onto the skid pan though, probably because Shaun (WAP Motorsport) likes that job. When setting up for a motorkhana, I think I can solve the arguments over the spacing for the cones. Use the club van to measure then drive it around the course. Follow this with a lap using ‘The Bruiser’ and explain that Germany’s finest CAN fit through! At a recent Haunted Hills, I was thrown the keys to Andrew Bonwick’s green machine and led the conga through the figure of eight. Going well until I got back to the cross-over and faced WRXs and Porsches still coming down the hill! Apparently there was a traffic jam right around the circle. On a more formal note, I have been busy cajoling, pleading, pushing, pulling and finally, bribing, the volunteers to become CAMS accredited. We are seriously short of people holding Steward and Club Chief licences. We have managed to get more Bronze Scrutineers and two have their Bronze Timing so that we can work with Timetronics. We have a number of people who hold General Official licences. It can be an interesting exercise 34

in gaining these qualifications and exposes us to yet more car clubs and their ideas. The last eighteen months has seen me driving the club van to competitions. When I have been unable to do this, Rowan Burnett and Corey Quinn have both stepped up to the plate and taken it for me. The balance of the team have also shouldered extra work and made sure that the van is packed up after each event. For this, I am very appreciative as I had a wonderful 2012/13 competition season with my horses and was able to take every opportunity to travel with them. One of the bribes we use is that of a hot lap with a driver. The smiles tell it all and I have to thank all those drivers who have kindly volunteered (or been volunteered) to ‘chauffeur’ the marshalls around the various tracks and on the skid pans. Yes, you read correctly. We are still chuckling over the gorgeous Harriet Anson being driven around the cones at DECA by Alan Hines. Sorry Kerry, I have to spill the beans ... Harriet was actually encouraging him to go faster!! I believe she also suggested that Tim Williams could be a bit speedier. Oh Harriet, your smile afterwards says it all. Poor Ken has a bit of competition. Apparently Harriet’s dream now is to be a passenger with Mr Fitzgerald. Something that she shares with Tas Kozaris and a couple of others. No pressure Peter. I did explain they would need to bring their own race seats. I would like to say thank you to Shaun Maloney and his crew from WAP Motorsport for their good grace and humour. The advice received from this group has been invaluable in helping make our days safer and more enjoyable. I am still having heart palpitations from being driven around the Broadford track by Shaun (and he wasn’t going fast!)
Sylvia Behan (Husband Mark runs a car) Paul Belcourt Andrew Bonwick (past Competition Director) James Borg Rowan Burnett Tony Carolan (yes, the Competition Director has done a stint on trackside) Clair and Peter Cromie Barb and Will Darvall Tristan de Carro (our very own team photographer) Simon Dunn Ken Ellaway Graeme Farr (when he is not working at other tracks) John and MaryAnne Goldsworthy (John also runs a car) Zoltan Goli John Hall Bruce Harris Peter Harrison (Yes, our esteemed President manned the flags at one event. He has an interesting style in waving the chequered flag) Brad Hedgelong Peter Hemphill Nick Hockaday
Bryce and Jo with their crews have also been brilliant in their support of the volunteers. The rapport between these guys and the team has certainly caused some hilarity near the grid areas.
Mark Horton-Andrews (did his first stint as Clerk of Course)
The helpfulness of both these crews in getting the team out to, and back in from the points, running batteries, lost flags etc. is just one of the things that make the days run more smoothly.

I asked the volunteers for a few thoughts to include in this article, which also opened an interesting discussion over ‘policing’ and rules. And please, if you are at a competition and you see a person in a Hi-vis jacket or vest, a quick smile and thanks is greatly appreciated. I’m just sorry I didn’t think to get photos of this excellent team to add to the article. And no, I did not offer bribes for the comments which I have cut and paste as they came in. Brett Stevens : This was my first full year of Marshaling. I really enjoyed the friendship of the other marshals and the challenge of different duties and different tracks. The variety of Motorkhana was really interesting. James Borg: Having experienced a few track-days I thought I’d give ‘marshaling’ a go for Presidents Day - and it was quite an experience. It was fantastic being so close to the action, and being part of the organisation for the day. It all ran extremely smoothly (and safely) for the participants and it was a pleasure to contribute to that. Everyone I met on the day was very helpful and serious about their responsibilities, yet there were many opportunities to get to know other members, have a laugh and see some fantastic cars. Ken Anson: 1. Finding the speed of light to duck behind that tree on the short track at DECA as a Boxster got sideways over the crest. 2. From above, at Bryant Park, watching Peter Fitzgerald power out of the last turn before timing. 3. Harriet encouraging her hot lap drivers to go faster. 4. At Winton during a “parade lap” when I’m trying to catch up to Brett and Andrew Ingham at the entrance to the back straight, Harriet telling me to turn left and the bloody female GPS voice telling me to turn right. Talk about confusion, with their similar voices. Never to be forgotten. Tas Kozaris: I just love the HOT LAPS, enjoy
being in the Club, meeting the Drivers and seeing their cars on the track. After scrutinizing them, a very relaxing day for me. The Winton/DECA weekend is the best. Best of all the Marshaling Team, a nice bunch of people to work with and have a laugh. Gordon Johnstone: Working with the regulars was the best part of this year for me. A regular core group of marshalls and officials showing up for events and moving through different roles has made this year run pretty smoothly. Everyone slots into their assigned roles and cover well for others when needed. Competition days are increasingly more fun as you get to know more and more of the people involved. While there are drivers who sometimes become a bit agitated, their impact is far less disruptive as you work with them more often. The combined club events were interesting in the way they highlighted the PCVs processes and their benefit in the running of events, but at the same time there were some things the other clubs did that were good ideas. Mixing things up to make events viable has lots of benefits. Mary Anne Goldsworthy: John and I marshaled for the first time this year, and although we were unsure of what to do, we turned up and enjoyed ourselves as a direct result of the highly organised Robin and her team of volunteers. We met more new people and had a greater appreciation of the work load that goes into putting on such events Will Darvall:I would like to say that I am always impressed by the marshals’ competence and initiative at each event, which makes the job of the CoC so much easier; e.g. on President’s day, with the s/f line calling the chequered flag and last car, the last corner announcing that car passing and the starter then sending off the next group. A good year! Vaughan Rose: Just good being part of the team freezing cold or sweltering in the heat ...best hot lap was with Sally Anne at Haunted Hills. David Hosking: Unfortunately, I only had limited involvement in Marshaling this year due to unforeseen circumstances. I enjoy the experience of marshaling mainly because of the people I work with. They are always cheerful, friendly and willing to pass on their experience to those of us who are relatively new to the activity and I feel I have made good friends in the process. Brad Hedgelong: Thanks Robin for letting me be part of what was truly an amazing day down at Philip Island. The hot laps were definitely the highlight of the day, though watching these friendly and appreciative drivers throw hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of car down the track at the limit of the somewhat stockish tyres and come out the other side of the corner generally unscathed was an absolute pleasure to be a part of. The fellow marshalls were also a great bunch of people who deserve every accolade they receive,
after all, sitting out at siberia for hours on end is not exactly the most comfortable place to be with the sea breeze blowing. Mark Horton-Andrew : Marshaling has been a great way for me to become involved in the motor sport aspects of the Club. The Marshals are a die-hard bunch of really good people and I enjoy the friendship and camaraderie of the group enormously. This year I was fortunate to have the support of the Club for CAMS qualification which opens up new options for event management. I strongly encourage any members who are interested to give Marshaling a try! Peter Baker: Being that the 2013 Presidents Day was my first outing as a marshal, I found the organization for the day was extremely professional. There was nothing left to chance and because of this, I found the whole event was a wonderful learning experience for myself. The other Porsche enthusiasts (thanks Henry & Mark) that showed me the “ropes”, were very helpful and informative, not only in discussing what to look for and what to do, but also in their appreciation of the Marque that we all love. I again thank you for the opportunity. Rowan Burnett: Marshaling to me in 2013 was all about the Scrutineering of the driver’s cars & in particular the fantastic feedback from the guys on a job well done this year under what has been challenging conditions at the various tracks. Other highlight was the Winton/DECA weekend and the hilarious Driver’s Dinner with Mel T & Brett, never had so many people laughed over Sailor Jokes !! (apparently as told by Corey and Mel will never be late again!!) Geoff Janssen : Past year of Porsche Club Marshaling can be described as - Cool Cars, Great bunch of people, competitors & especially the Marshals (even the odd character, like Tas). Every year the system of race day is getting better & better. Corey Quinn : What I enjoy and has already been reflected by some of the replies is the friendships that have been formed and the continued opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts. I continue to enjoy the response and level of respect given back to us Marshals by the Drivers as to our level of professionalism and how seriously we take our respective responsibilities. This has also been reflected by attendees to the annual ‘6 hour’ and the joint track day with the Alfa Club. In closing, I would like to invite anyone interested in joining the team to contact me through the club site. It is an interesting experience for all concerned and can also give the competition drivers a different perspective of their day. Yes, we can be borderline bossy. Yes, we can be picky. Yes, we will call it as we see it. At the end of the day, we want to see people going home happy and whole. It has been a privilege to work with this wonderfully dedicated group. On behalf of the team, I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season and looking forward to ‘doing it all again’ next year. SUMMER 2013

One of the consequences of having the largest collection of club cars on display at the RACV Motorclassica is needing to be the first club to load in. This meant the alarm going off at a rather rude 5:30am on a Sunday morning to be at the event by 6:30 for a 7am load in. I shouldn’t complain as others had to come much further than Footscray, I’m thankful I didn’t have their alarm call. 44 cars were booked for our display, but due to a couple of unforeseen circumstances including poor Antoine who’s 930 decided that an early start wasn’t for it,saw our attending numbers closer to 40, but still this was a collection of 40 magnificent Porsches and the line up along Rathdown Street was a sight in itself. Having worked the previous 3 days shooting Motorclassica and using my 993 on the opening tour day my poor little 993 received the Thursday showers and was in no state to be displayed amongst the other beautiful PCV cars of which some wouldn’t have done too badly in the concourse judging being carried out in the main pavilion.
On display in the grounds of the Royal Exhibition Building and surrounded by many prestigious marques such as Jaguar’s, MG’s, Ferrari’s and nestled next to the quaint Morris Minors the PCV’s fine collection attracted a huge crowd pouring themselves of the various vehicles and it didn’t seem to matter if it was Craig’s later 997 GT3RS, Ray’s divine Speedster or Greg’s 911 R. Polishing finished it was time for the serious business to begin and our team of judges worked their way around to each of the Porsches with clipboards in hand and much scribbling upon the judging sheets. Winners were announced by Michael Bailey and our
President extraordinaire Peter Harrison presented the trophies to our worthy winners.

Spring Run Following coffee to warm the belly and caffeine to wake the early Sunday risers, a welcome from our President, an introduction from our new members, a briefing from run organiser Michael Bailey, and a ramble from yours truly spring was in the air and so were the sounds of approximately 30 Porsches who chose not to stay in on a Sunday and watch the Bathurst 1000 as we took off from what’s become a familiar launching platform in the Rockbank BP Roadhouse. Whilst it was spring the weather gods felt the need to try and argue otherwise and thought that Porsche drivers either needed wet weather driving training or those of us with Cabriolet’s should test the theory that the faster you went, the less rain that fell inside the cockpit. And I can attest that this theory is true and the only need to watch the Mythbusters episode also proving the point is to watch the gorgeous 997. This normal solo driver had a passenger this day, all the way from Bonn in Germany. The
girlfriend of a very lucky Martin Tschersich contacted PCV wanting to facilitate a special birthday present by providing Martin with a ride in a 993 Porsche. There was no jumping out of a birthday cake by me but I did let Martin experience a 993 on open roads, even coming from the fatherland Martin had never been in a Porsche before. Morning tea was put on by the lovely team at the Newstead CFA, once more we were treated to a splendid spread of home made delights including sandwiches, slices and sponge cakes. The spread laid out for the Porsche Club once more seemed to be over catered and a few lucky members enjoyed a tasty doggy bag to enjoy later. Brigade Captain Doug Richardson gave an enthralling history of the CFA that was born in 1919 due to the continual occurrence of the township catching fire. The rain held off for the second half of the journey as the collection of Porsches enjoyed some magnificently chosen roads by Michael
that allowed the cars to partake at what they do best, tight corners and a good stretching of the legs on open roads whilst taking in fantastic scenery through quaint townships and countryside of the surrounding area of Mount Franklin, back roads of Woodend before finally coming from the north into the stunning township of Macedon to our luncheon destination of the Macedon Spa Resort. Club members were treated to a roast Sunday lunch buffet before being let loose to chose from the array of cakes and as many scoops of ice cream that plates and tummies would permit. Lunch conversations paused momentarily for the giving away of some wine procured from the Macedon Spa Resort before a little more conversations turned into goodbyes and our visitors headed back towards Melbourne and surrounding areas. Many thanks to all who attended and to Michael Bailey for a fantastic afternoon.

Good Times and Goodwood
Ferrari GTO, worth up to $60 million and still racing!
In the last week of August, Barb and I went to England, hired a car and spent a week touring around the Lakes district (in the North West) and up to Northern Scotland. The next week, we joined a group of walkers and hiked along Hadrian’s Wall across England, from coast to coast, Carlisle to Newcastle. That was energetic, satisfying and stimulating, justifying the indulgence to come.
Hotel in London. We were to stay there for 4 nights, enjoying London’s attractions and visits to exclusive destinations, then move to a hotel near Portsmouth for 3 nights, to attend the annual Goodwood Revival Festival. About half of the petrol heads were PCV members, with the others coming from around Oz. Those visits were to Aston Martin, McLaren and Caterham, then to Rolls Royce, when at Goodwood.
So, in the second week of September, we joined a group of 28 like-minded petrol heads on a David Withers/ Michael Browning Bucket List tour, staying at the Bentley
Aston Martin is celebrating its centenary and seems in a very healthy state. It has always been a low volume manufacturer, with a chronically uncertain future.

However, it has a popular model range, selling more than ever. We toured the modern factory and production line and were impressed with the use of bonding techniques (cars, not people) and quality manual craftsmanship. McLaren Cars factory is visually and environmentally friendly, with much of the building below ground and surrounded by a serene lake, which also provides industrial cooling. The 50 years of racing history is stressed, with many significant models displayed, together with 174 metres of trophy cabinets! They also produce sizeable
numbers of road cars, with the 3000th 12C recently celebrated. We viewed the production line from above, which was also producing the new P1 super car. However, we got within touching distance of Button’s F1 car, which was being torn down and rebuilt between races.
is surrounded by peaceful countryside. Naturally, everything is rather posh and formal. We observed the production line from above, but entered the upholstery section and heard how some of the rich and famous matched their upholstery to a lipstick, or a favourite dog!
Caterham F1 is much smaller, but just as enthusiastic and full of clever, innovative people, trying to wring any advantageous drops out of racing technology.
There are 2 annual Goodwood historic motor racing festivals; the Festival of Speed and the Revival Festival. The FoS is held at Lord March’s expansive country home, usually in May, and is basically structured around a hillclimb, which takes place on the estate’s narrow access road,
Rolls Royce is situated on the Goodwood estate and, as with the former factories,
running from the home and following a slightly winding course to the top of a small hill. Risk and interest are provided by adjoining stone walls, absence of run-off areas and fresh grass at the edge of the one lane track! Vehicles range from the latest F1 to historic specials, exotic saloon cars, motor bikes, American oval racers and rally cars, with an equal diversity of steerers. There are featured marque displays, jaw dropping exotica, more famous drivers than you could imagine and non stop action on a rally course run through the woods at the top of the hill. SUMMER 2013
49
The Revival Festival is held in September at the nearby Goodwood circuit, which runs around the Goodwood aerodrome, part of Lord March’s incredibly extensive estates. It celebrates the motor racing which ran from 1948-1966 at the circuit, famously initiated by Tony Gaze’s suggestion to the present Lord’s grandfather, that the airfield’s access road was a ready made course, on which to commence post war racing. Tony was guest of honour last year and died recently after a fascinating life, chronicled in his biography “Almost Unknown”. The circuit languished from 1966, until racing was revived again in 1998, running events for cars that raced in that era only, so that it is now the world’s most popular historic race meeting. Practice is held on Friday and 15 events are held over the weekend, running for 25-90 minutes. The historic theme is promoted, with period dress encouraged and mandated in some areas, all sorts of displays and 200 retailers keen to sell new and old clothes, automobilia, memorabilia and forgetorabilia. We attended on each day, roaming around the pits and track on Friday and Saturday, being able to walk around the whole circuit and observe from any spot, or from many small stands. On Sunday, we enjoyed the perfect position and superb hospitality of the Salvadori pavilion, which is situated inside the track at the esses and has a large grass viewing area, allowing access to the simple track fence. Modern safety measures are not a priority, with hay bales on guard in many areas.
Off to the races! The drivers were a mixture of very skillful amateurs and some professionals, entered only by invitation. The track record is 1min 20.4 sec, (107 mph, 172 kph), set and equalled on the same day in 1965, by Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart. Dear reader/s, some mind-numbing description follows, but you may like to pick out some good bits, because there were plenty! The older you are, the better it seems! Besides, many of you race historic cars, now over 30 years old. 1. The Freddie March Memorial Trophy is a 2-driver event of 90 minutes, in the spirit of the Goodwood Nine Hour (!) races from 1952-55, for racing sports cars, with many Aston DB3 variants, C Type Jags, 100S Healeys, Frazer Nash Le Mans Replicas, an early Ferrari, Maserati A6GCS’s, an Allard, etc. 2. The Goodwood Trophy is for Grand Prix and Voiturette cars from 19301950, including Alfas, many ERA’s, Maseratis, Talbot Lagos and others. 3. The Madgwick Cup is for sportsracing cars, under 2.7 litres, from 19481955, including gaggles of Coopers, Lotuses, OSCA’s and even a Cisitalia. 4. The Barry Sheene Trophy is for 500cc racing bikes, from 1962-66. There were lots of Nortons, many MV Agustas, Matchlesses, a couple of Triumphs and a couple of BMW’s. The more sophisticated MV’s were taking over from the previously invincible Nortons in those years. Wayne Gardner put on a spirited display, riding a Norton. 5. The St. Mary’s Trophy is a 2-part race for 1960-66 production saloons, including Mini Cooper S’s, BMW 1800’s, LotusCortinas, Alfas, Jaguar Mk2’s, an Anglia 105E and a couple of raging Galaxie 500’s. Tom Kristensen’s Galaxie won by less than a second from an Alfa 1600 GTA, with
50

Jochen Mass third in the other Galaxie and Jackie Oliver 4th in a BMW. Placings for part 2 next day were the same, with the alternative drivers. It remains a mystery how the little cars, particularly the Minis, can compete so well with the powerful ones on this fast circuit, especially since they have rubber block “suspension”! Other drivers in this race were Christian Horner, Rowan Atkinson, Derek Bell and rally icons Rauno Aaltonen and Stephan Peterhansel. 6. The Whitsun Trophy is a 2-driver, 45 min race for Ford GT40’s, won by Adrian Newey and Kenny Brack. It was fascinating to see 27 of these elegant cars, identical except for 1 roadster and 1 long body prototype. 7. The Richmond Trophy is for front engine GP cars from 1952-60. Again, a great variety of cars gave a breathtaking display of tail-out racing, on the obligatory cross ply tyres of the era. 8. The Chichester Cup is for Formula Juniors from 1958-62, all with the specified Ford 997 or 1098 motors. 9. The Fordwater Trophy is for productionbased sports and GT cars, from 195560, with a variety of desirable cars, including Gullwings, XK140’s, Ferraris, Alfas, a few 356’s, Astons, Morgans, Corvettes, MGA’s and Healeys. Aussie David Smithies won in a very noisy Healey 100/6 over Jochen Mass, in a Gullwing. 10. The Gordon Trophy is for rear-engined Inter continental and F1 cars from 1956-
62. It contained many Coopers and Lotuses, with a smattering of others. 11. The Royal Auto Club TT Celebration, is a 60 minute, 2-driver race for closed cockpit GT cars, from 1960-64. This was the outstanding race, full of mouthwatering E-Types, AC Cobras, many types of Ferraris, including GTO’s, Astons, a Corvette, a Lister-Jag, a Sunbeam Lister Tiger and a lone Maser. The rain came bucketing down halfway through this race, allowing the beautiful Aston Project 212 to
carve through the field for a win, from the Lister-Jag, 2 AC Cobras and 4 E Types. 12. The Glover Trophy is for 1.5 litre GP and 1 litre Formula 2 cars from 1961-66. This contained the usual gaggle of Lotuses, Lolas, Brabhams, Coopers, BRM’s and a lone Ferrari. 13. The Sussex Trophy is for World Championship sports cars and productionbased sports-racing cars, from 1955-60. This was another highlight, with a jawdropping array of Aston DBR1’s, D Type Jags, Lister-Jags, Maserati 61’s (Birdcage)
and 300S, Ferraris and a few orphans, including Rob Sherrard’s Monza-Holden! Interspersed throughout the weekend were aerial displays, which included a Hurricane, a Spitfire, a Mustang, a Lancaster Bomber and the exquisite Canberra jet from 1959, which was the RAF’s longest serving aircraft. There were daily Jim Clark tribute parades, when many of Jim’s notable race cars came out to play. What a fabulous carnival of fantastic cars, fearless and skilled driving, British nostalgia and all the trappings! My
enduring memory is the heart-in-themouth high speed controlled oversteer through the right-left off-camber St Mary’s corner, particularly when performed by the multi-million dollar TT cars! The many thousands of cars parked in the surrounding fields also provided the motor show of a lifetime! It’s the concentration of iconic cars that makes us envious. Can the Festival survive, with cars that are now a minimum of 57 years old? Sure can! P.S. Don’t miss the Phillip Island Historics in March!

Run to Soltan Pepper Restaurant Mid Week Lunch Run 5th December 2013
Yes, we said Rockbank to Romsey, but in true fashion we took the longer and more interesting way of getting there. To start with, the meeting point at the Servo at Rockbank was set for 9:30am and despite all the traffic snarls and hazards, all but one car was on time (13 cars and 20 people). Now what happened to that car? I will not reveal their identity, but at 9:30am Greensborough/ Kangaroo Ground was not really anywhere near Rockbank! They were welcomed into the group at Mt Macedon.
stop. In fact I only announced the stop as a comfort stop, not a coffee stop! However , I noticed all the scones were devoured with gusto. With the digestive juices labouring hard on the scones and especially the cream, we left the park to attack the next part of the run to Romsey. The road down the north slope of the mountain was again a visual delight that opened up onto lush green farmlands. As promised, it was a forty five minute drive to Romsey, to the chosen restaurant called Soltan Pepper.
For a small country town what a great little restaurant - great food and great service. Very busy with another larger group, but very efficient despite the noise and laughter. Without exception, everyone had both an enjoyable drive and lunch that lasted for just over two hours, before everyone started their home journey. Thankyou everyone for your participation and I look forward to seeing you on the next Mid Week Run.
The drive took a sharp turn at Rockbank to the north to Toolernvale and across to the Bacchus Marsh/Gisborne Road. Nice open roads through farmlands. At the “Merrimu Reservoir” there is a nice tight right and left hand curve which any selfrespecting Porsche could do at least at 100kph through it, but the good old Nanny state restricts it down to 60 kph - shame on them. At this point there were only 7 cars out of the 13. Where were the others? Following like sheep, a “lost” leader who did not read the instructions. Eventually they corrected their errant ways and we all arrived at the restaurant/comfort stop at the top of Mt Macedon on a December day of only 6 degrees. Remember, a couple of days before it was a boiling hot 36c. The drive through Mt Macedon village and the splendour of the gracious gardens was an absolute joy to the eye. After copious amounts of cappuccino, fresh scones, jam and cream, I reminded everyone of the briefing when I said that lunch was only another 45 minute drive from the Mt Macedon SUMMER 2013

I only service cars for my friends... It doesn’t always start that way, but that’s how it ends up. We both own Porsches, we have shared values and interests. They’re skilled and committed to their careers, same here. When I started as an apprentice at Hamiltons over 15 years ago, it was bred into the Service Team to always go the extra mile, always strive for excellence. I call it the “Hamiltons Touch”, and it’s part of my DNA. My friends deal directly with me, I do the work, I answer their questions, I sort problems. They get the Hamiltons Touch without the price. … and I’m always looking for new friends. “the car ran beautifully...the whole car was feeling more refined… A very good outcome and satisfied customer.” Stephen Marshall “my wife is very happy with her Boxster’s performance and says it even sounds better... your follow up call was also greatly appreciated.” John Mitsy

Cruising in the delightful Yarra Valley Mid Week Lunch Run Wednesday 16th October 2013
On Wednesday the 16th of October, the MidWeek Register held a lunch event in the pleasant greenery of the Yarra Valley. The meeting place was the McDonalds on the corner of Springvale and Wellington Roads. Early indications of an enjoyable day was the excited and boisterous conversation as we awaited the off. Maybe it was the coffee!
Back to the cars, we took off along three very enjoyable roads - the Woori Yallock Road, the Healesville Koo Wee Rup Road and Myers Creek Road. Recent storms and winds left some debris across the tarmac keeping all drivers on their toes. If you haven’t tried this route before, I can highly recommend it as a winding drive through interesting countryside.
A very fine selection of vehicles were in attendance with a 993s and a couple of 993 Turbos, a pair of 996, a 964 Turbo, one Boxster S, one Cayman S and a delightful 1983 911 SC Cabriolet. Oh yes, and there was also an Alfa and one Aston Martin…
It was then an easy drive into the township of Yarra Glen where lunch at the Grand Hotel awaited us. The hotel was bustling (a good sign mid week) and the a-la-carte lunch (with many local produce options) was excellent. An extensive list of local and boutique wines kept the interest of drivers and passengers alike. Conversation continued after the meal in the eclectically-decorated main dining room. It may
Thanks go to Robert Fairley for organising the day and for putting together a most interesting route. We initially headed off towards Harkaway, then Beaconsfield before a mid-morning stop at the always enjoyable Charlotte’s Café on Main Street, Gembrook. As we consumed even more coffee (!), a group of hikers trudged in through the front door, seemingly fresh from hiking / climbing up Mount Gembrook or similar, looking disdainfully at our group taking up the only large table in the dining room, they continued to hike out the back door never to be seen by us again, but leaving the front door guarded by a gorgeous Australian shepherd.
come as no surprise that more coffee was consumed before we all set off for a not-so-long drive home. I am delighted to report that there were no mechanical issues or incidents on the day. Thanks to Robert & Barbara, Wayne & Lindsay, Sandro & Robyn, Peter & Peta, Frank, Kevin, Tony, Gary, Brent and Robin for contributing to another great Mid-Week Register event.

Run to Aireys Inlet Mid 911 Register Sunday 22nd September 2013
south towards Ceres on the open sweeping roads of the hills on the western side of Geelong. Here, a blooper in the run notes caused a navigation error, resulting in a number of cars executing U turns, and no doubt there was some animated and lively in car discussion. At least there was in this scribes car.
Mid 911 runs are always well attended, and this run to Freestones Diner and Classic Car Museum at Aireys Inlet was no exception. Sixteen mid 911’s formed the majority of the twenty one cars, while a couple of Caymans, a 993 Turbo, a Boxster and a GT-3 made up the rest. Peter and Clair Cromie organised this run. As organiser, Peter welcomed new members and then gave a short briefing about the run, including announcing that he had purchased a 993, and he would be moving to that Register. Therefore this would be his last run as Mid-911 Register Captain and Ken Anson had agreed to assume the Captain’s position. Peter and Clair, on behalf of the Mid-911 Register members, I would like to thank and congratulate both of you for your efforts and dedication to the Club, and the Mid-911 Register in particular over the past five years that I have known you. We hope to see you on some of our runs in the future. Initially we drove west over Exford Weir, and then travelled quickly south and west again through the hills and curves of the wine growing area of Staughton Vale. On the approach to Anakie, the castle structure of Fairy Park, an adventure world dedicated to legends and ancient tales, loomed high on our left. Anakie was soon left behind as we progressed 56

But we all got back on track for our stop at Moriac where the navigation error was discussed with a lot of hilarity. However Clair had a simple response that everyone could relate to. She explained that the notes had been typed late at night after she had partaken of a couple of glasses of an excellent fermented medication so all was forgiven immediately. After coffee and a long break, Peter got us moving again onto the enjoyable almost deserted hilly and winding roads which were covered rapidly until we reached Deans Marsh. A recollection from this section was the rather spiritedly driven GT-3 from Warrnambool that was well out of sight, but certainly well within hearing range. The Deans Marsh/Lorne section through the Great Otway National Park with its short climbs and tight descending corners followed by the long interesting descent into Lorne kept the adrenalin level up. This is a great piece of road, everyone should drive it.
A left turn at Lorne, and we soon were at Aireys Inlet and the Freestones Diner. Freestones Diner and Classic Car Museum started with a dream by active motoring enthusiasts and competitors Paul and Christine Freestone and is a typical sixties style American Diner arrangement. We were fortunate to have Paul take individual groups of about six or eight at a time for guided tours of the museum. The museum displays mainly pre sixties cars. They are certainly not museum queens, and are driven on the road on a regular basis. The cars include an Aston Martin DB2, one of only five lightweight Monaros built to win Targa Tasmania, and other cars too numerous to mention. Suffice to say that all are immaculate! As owner and guide, Paul gave us a detailed history of each car, as well as the concept and construction of the diner. The history and development of the Diner and Museum is too involved to discuss here, but is portrayed on their website. The complex is well worth a visit. In bright sunlight a simple and adequate lunch followed by dessert was eaten on the semi outdoor decking on the first level. Well done, Peter and Clair for organising a run with great roads and an interesting and unusual venue for lunch.

Mitchelton Run 911 Turbo & GT3/RS Register 22nd September 2013
unfortunately splitting one of his GT3 wheels at the Island the week before and had to fall back on his trusty 993 Turbo to at least try and fit in… Of the 17 cars entered a couple of our Turbo members elected to meet us at the restaurant (one due to feeling a little sluggish after a big Saturday night). And another Turbo pilot Robert Cameron, attending his first PCV event (welcome Robert), arranged to meet us en route as he resides in Northern Victoria. On Sunday the 22nd of September the Turbo and GT3/RS Registers decided to make a full day of it after successfully sharing an early morning run earlier in the year. We set off from McDonalds on the corner of Smith Street and Victoria Parade with 17 cars registered, including 8 Turbos, 2 GT3s, 1 GT2, 3 from the Boxster/Cayman Register, one from the Modern Register and two from the Mid 911 Register. These numbers are a little misleading with Greg Humphries (our GT3 Captain)

Our first checkpoint was at St Andrews which turned out to be a good reflection of how the day would transpire with a few of our members clicking over some additional K’s as a result of a short detour caused by a front car taking the wrong turn and the ‘sheep’ following. The group then set off from St Andrews in warm dry spring conditions with the countryside looking magnificent. As his usual co-pilot decided to purchase and drive his own 911, our Turbo Captain ended up driving this event ‘solo’ and thus had to rely on others for navigation. Needless to say, there was a lead group of some 11 cars that departed, dutifully following the mapped route, thus enjoying some great roads, arriving at Mitchelton without any further mishaps. Sadly, three ‘tourists’ took a major deviation thereby discovering some magnificent roads out the back of Broadford which apparently will be incorporated in a future run. Every cloud has a silver lining (or a sensational driver’s road). In spite of the group splitting, the cars arrived
at Mitchelton at broadly the same time. We were treated to a very tasty two-course lunch, complimented by excellent estate wines. Major renovations have seen the restaurant, along with the tasting room, moved into the old storage/ gallery building under the iconic tower. Parking was arranged in front of this building and provided some fantastic photo opportunities. The ‘Why-Me’ award for the day went to an early model Turbo owner who decided to try his remote anti-theft device for the first time EVER at the St Andrews stop. Suffice to say that it did at least lock the driver’s door and he spent the rest of the event crawling in and out over the hand brake, gear lever and passenger seat. And always with a smile! Thanks to all for contributing to a great joint register day.

A Taste of the Tyrol at PCV’s AGM Porsche Centre Melbourne Tuesday 15th October 2013
The brief to the Social Committee was simple – get the AGM out of the way quick smart then let’s have a party! Ever creative, the Committee decided that a Germanic theme would be appropriate, and contacted PCV members Karl-Heinz and Roswitha Klopfer to see if they could help. In no time at all thanks to Karl-Heinz and Roswitha, the Austrian Singers of Melbourne choir conducted by Eva McAlister had agreed to perform, and Frank’s Elsternwick Bakery were all set to produce a Cayenneload of traditional Austrian pretzels. Our caterers rose to the challenge of providing a European-ised menu, while sponsors Nillumbik Cellars joined in with some German and Austrian wines for members to try, and some excellent German beers which were snapped up faster than a speeding 911. The choir excelled with an impressive selection of Austrian and German songs, while Roswitha brought lumps to members’ throats with her moving story of her challenging journey from the Black Forest to Melbourne. As always there were prizes for the best dressed in-theme members which were won by AnneMarie Coombs, and Mark and Sylvia Behan. Auf wiedersehen to another great Club Night – our last for 2013.

Register Luncheon at Fowles Winery Combined Boxster/Cayman and Turbo Registers Sunday 17st November 2013
The last register run of the end of year was fast approaching, and with the calendar full of events, the two captains from the Boxster and Torque tube knocked heads together and decided to end 2013 with a combined social run to favourite winery in Avenel - Fowles Winery.
Porsches, Bugattis and motorcycles. I thought I was at MotorClassica all over again. With so many great cars in one spot, it made good viewing, so much so that, we all ran late leaving for our next destination and rounding everyone up became a real challenge.
With Lindsay’s effervescent smile and good nature, we both set the tasks out and got down to the business of event organising. To our surprise, the event was booked out within 2 weeks of posting with 39 people and 22 cars attending. So much so that we have to leave in groups of 7 cars at a time so not to create too much attention and keep everyone in check.
The next stage was the run up to Avenel, and somehow Lindsay mapped out the longest, most windy, most fun possible way to get there. My GPS kept recalculating itself for another 40km every time we turned left instead of right. Wow what an effort just to make lunch however a great result by the St Baker’s to map out the run perfectly and great driving by Wayne in his fast blue Boxster to lead the pack of about 10 cars screaming through the hills.
The 1st part of the run wound its way through Warrandyte and Wonga Park with a few interesting twists and turns, poking out in Eltham with its Sunday markets bustling, before heading into Arthurs Creek and Whittlesea/King Lake ending up at Flying Tarts bake house for breakfast. The morning section wasn’t without its drama, watching Garry Saber avoid a fox running across the road Uhmm the tail would have looked good hanging from the aerial NOT and an unprecedented act of kindness when the driver of a ute pulled over several times to allow the 8 Porsches screaming up his tilt tray to pass, or rounding a fast bend only to see five Ferraris heading towards us in the opposite direction- now that was pretty cool! As all of the 22 cars arrived at Flying Tarts bake house, we had to park two deep – as there just wasn’t enough parking to fit all the cars , and lucky we did, as the low growling of Ferrari’s soon arrived at the same coffee stop – which lead to another OMG look on everyone’s faces. Flying Tarts was bombarded with Ferraris, 60

This time the route was not so eventful except for watching a slow flying pheasant crash into my windshield and bounce off – oh well we are in pheasant country after all, luckily it just flew way. We lost a few cars along the way as the convoy was much longer this time, except for that land shark of my new co-captain Ivan chomping at my tail, thankfully they all made it to Fowles winery without issue. Unfortunately, at this stage our good luck ran out as our new co-captain’s 928 S4 snapped an accelerator cable driving into the winery car parkgo figure. Very fortunate for him, but not so for the car, taking a $500 trip back to Melbourne on a tilt truck. Fowles Winery won the 2013 RACV Victorian Tourism Award and it really was evident why, with a great selection of entrees and mains to choose from, of course, only after we had sampled all the boutique wines, with famous names as “ladies who shoot their lunch” and “ are you game “ labels. Kodak moments were aplenty, I think there
were a few ladies that wanted to shoot me after taking their photo a few too many wines later. As a wrap up to the day’s festivities, including a farewell speech from Tony, Wayne and Lindsay organised a door prize with a selection of Fowles Wines up for grabs. Lindsay kindly organised a name in the hat lucky dip with eight lucky winners taking a bottle home each – and I promise it wasn’t rigged. A special thanks to Lindsay and Wayne as the organizers for planning, mapping out and putting together such a memorable day of driving and also a thank you to Ivan Romanic for accepting the Torque tube co-captain position to assist me in 2014 as Tony Monteleone is moving to New Zealand for 12 months.
