PRESIDENT’S COLUMN Donnie Harp
Welcome! It’s hard to believe that my year as FRSA President is almost at an end. I’m extremely proud that I’ve been given the opportunity to serve the Association and to be a part of all that has happened over the last four years. It seems like just yesterday we were discussing the theme for this year and plans for the Convention and Expo. This issue of Florida Roofing Magazine is our Convention issue and contains information on the events taking place at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) and the Hyatt Regency Orlando. In the center of the magazine is a pull-out brochure detailing all the events – educational seminars, sports tournaments, Ladies and Kids programs and social events. This is a license renewal year for contractors and there are more than enough educational hours planned on everything from the 2014 Florida Building Codes, customer service and preventative maintenance, OSHA record keeping requirements, and workers’ comp to the use of drones in roofing. The seminars have been planned so that you can get up to 12 hours of continuing education credit over the three-day period. So if you’re looking for industry specific education, we’ve got what you need. Registration for the Convention and the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Expo is easy. Visit FRSA’s website, www.floridaroof.com, look for the Convention logo on the home page and click “Register Now.” You’ll be able to sign up for everything all in one place. If you’re planning on attending only the Expo, you’ll also need to register for a free badge. I encourage you to do this now to avoid waiting in long lines onsite. Register ahead of time and jump in the fast pass lane onsite to pick up your package. Registration for the host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Orlando, is also available online. Once you complete your badge and/or ticket registration, you’ll be given a link to make hotel reservations. The room rate for our group is $159 for a single or double room and the $20 resort fee has been waived. The Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Expo, educational seminars, the Silent Auction, and the Friday Business Luncheon take place at the OCCC. The Ladies and Kids Program events, the Welcome Reception, and the S.T.A.R. Awards and Officer Installation Dinner take place at the Hyatt Regency. The sports tournaments are set for Thursday and include fishing at Cape Canaveral, golf at ChampionsGate and clay shooting at Tenoroc. Transportation to these tournaments is not provided, so please allow yourself enough drive time to arrive in plenty of time to sign-in onsite. For the fishing tournament, the Radisson Resort at the Port has hotel rooms available at $107 for those
who want to arrive the night before. To make reservations, call 321868-6573 and provide the code “FRSA” for the group rate. I hope that you’ll take the time to come out and support the industry and exhibitors that support FRSA. They make so much of what we do possible. I’m also extremely proud of the direction FRSA President Donnie Harp FRSA has taken. Over Imperial Roofing of Polk County, Winter Haven the years, we’ve been a player in the Florida codes arena, but this year I think we’ve really exceeded expectations. Mark Zehnal, CPRC, FRSA Director of Technical Services, has taken us to a whole new playing field, commanding respect and recognition at the national level. With the Florida Building Commission and the University of Florida sealed attic research, which includes a portion of funding from the FRSA Educational Foundation, we’re making great strides for the roofing industry. If you’re not an FRSA member, this is the time to make the commitment and join. I’ve been fortunate – I’ve had the opportunity to own my own business with the love and support of my family. I’ve been able to give back on a personal and professional level, paying it forward for the next generation coming through. God has blessed me with many wonderful people in my life. But my greatest joy and blessing is my daughter, Kristie Lee, who turns 21 years old this month. With her love for the outdoors and going fishing and hunting with me, she is the son I’ve always wanted! Thanks to her for keeping me grounded and showing me what’s important in life. My thanks to the FRSA Executive Committee for their support this year. Like Burt Logan, I plan on staying involved and will provide you support this coming year in the years ahead. God bless!

FRSA LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL Cam Fentriss
Being Politically Active Important for You and Your Business It’s campaign season again. It happens every two years. Every four years, we also get to pick a president and that always increases voter interest and turnout. FRSA is active in Florida’s House and Senate campaigns and our focus is on what will be best for our roofing industry. That sounds easy enough – just support all the Republicans running for office, right? Wrong. When we examine the track record over the last few election cycles, we can see our job is more complicated than that. We have two major priorities: a fair and strong workers’ compensation system and stopping unlicensed activity. We need legislators in office who will respect and acknowledge these priorities and help us with related issues. Instead, over the last four to six years, we seem to have a supermajority in charge of the Florida House (to a lesser degree in the Florida Senate, but that may change) that does not seem to take the concerns of the construction industry very seriously. We need to change that – here is a start: Strategy One: We can make it a priority to get to know the people running for these state offices so we will know who is or is not most likely to keep the roofing industry viable and healthy. Strategy Two: We can support those who are most likely to support us on our issues. To succeed with these strategies, we need to be active on both the local and state levels. On the state level, we have our FRSA PAC and we participate in candidate interviews. On the local level, we need people to get involved or, if you are already involved, we need you to let us know about it. Let me provide you with a little more detail about how this works. The FRSA PAC is funded primarily by your contributions. At the time of annual renewal of your FRSA membership, you pay $40 to the FRSA PAC unless you opt out of this. Most of our members do not opt out, but for any of you who do, I hope you will reconsider next time. The FRSA PAC works to help you and your business. It is not a frilly political slush fund that supports a bunch of empty suits. With the FRSA PAC funds, we make decisions on which candidates to support based on the person’s track record, answers to interview questions, and any other information available. We participate in organized state level candidate interviews through the AIF Political Council (Associated Industries of Florida). This is a business
organization that organizes the Workers’ Compensation Coalition and has vast expertise in business issues, especially workers’ comp, as well as tremendous elections analysis talent. Through the interview process, we can explore the knowledge of a candidate and we can also provide that candidate with additional information. This is often much more valuable than meeting the winners after the elections. Local candidate interviews or meet-and-greets are just as important as state level candidate interviews. This can be a great project for your Affiliate or for a small group of your local members. Whether as a group or individually, this is an important opportunity to meet people who may be representing your interests in Tallahassee for two to four years. Often, they do much more than just sit in Florida’s capital and vote on bills. Getting to know these people can be very helpful to you and your business. If you are already involved or are interested in being involved with meeting and evaluating your local candidates, we welcome your participation and we want to hear from you. We would love to know what you are doing, and we would also like to have your input on what candidates you think will do good things for the roofing industry. Being politically active is important to you and for your business. Having a professional association to help pull it all together for the roofing industry is crucial. Please take some time to be active and be part of what FRSA does for your benefit.

TAMKO Building Products – Manufacturer of Residential and Commercial Roofing Products Since 1944, the TAMKO story has been one of innovation, quality and long-standing customer relationships. Though a lot has changed since TAMKO introduced their first shingle over 70 years ago in a Joplin, Missouri streetcar barn, one thing remains the same: their commitment to constantly moving the industry forward with a wide variety of building products. Over seven decades of success is the direct result of teamwork, enduring relationships with customers, suppliers and employees, and a company-wide commitment to continuous improvement, including the Six Sigma program, a business strategy and management philosophy designed to improve their processes and products. Vertical integration is also a key part of TAMKO’s success. They are a vertically integrated company, owning and operating several raw materials plants. Maintaining greater control over the entire manufacturing process allows TAMKO to deliver consistent supply by reducing shortages and delivery times. Today, TAMKO remains headquartered in Joplin—the very place it first began—and operates additional manufacturing facilities and warehouse facilities across the country in order to serve its customers with roofing and decking products. Take a look at their latest innovations in building products, and discover how each innovation set the foundation for where TAMKO is today. In 1944, at the age of 69, E.L. Craig began a roofing business in an old streetcar barn in Joplin, MO. Mrs. Mary Ethel Craig named the company TAMKO—from the first letters of the five states the company anticipated as its sales territory: Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. She later assumed the leadership of TAMKO in 1954 due to Mr. Craig’s health. The Craigs’ daughter, Ethelmae, directed TAMKO’s operations during the ’50s and has continued as TAMKO’s chairman to this day. In 1960, Ethelmae’s husband, J.P. (Jay) Humphreys, became TAMKO’s president. Over the next 33 years, Jay Humphreys led TAMKO’s success with his entrepreneurial vision of growth for TAMKO with the addition of manufacturing plants in Phillipsburg,

Kansas; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Knoxville, Tennessee; Frederick, Maryland; and Dallas, Texas. Mr. Humphreys set the course for TAMKO’s continued success with his vision of quality process management built on the continuous quality improvement principles of Dr. W. Edwards Deming. Following Jay’s death in 1993, David Craig Humphreys (Jay and Ethelmae’s eldest son) assumed TAMKO’s leadership in 1994 and TAMKO’s expansion has continued at a dramatic pace, expanding production capabilities for additional products. TAMKO has come a long way in the roofing industry over the last seven decades. What started as a single line of asphalt shingles in Joplin, MO has blossomed into a large-scale manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing products serving customers across the nation. TAMKO products offer a powerful combination of cut, color and coverage to give customers the beauty and performance they need. This full line of products includes high-quality lines of shingles, above- and below-grade waterproofing products, and cements and coatings—all designed to work together to provide optimum roof performance.
TAMKO Complete™
TAMKO is constantly evolving with the goal of offering the best roofing options available. It all starts with an understanding of what’s most important to homeowners and supplying contractors with the right products to meet the needs of customers. It’s called TAMKO Complete.
Building Products
As TAMKO has continued to grow, so has their product line. In 2006, TAMKO Roofing Products Inc. changed its name to TAMKO Building Products, Inc. to more accurately reflect that TAMKO manufactures more than just shingles. They offer a complete line of accessories to help support their roofing and decking products, as well as building materials that include waterproofing, window and door wraps, asphalt cements and coatings, insulation facer and many raw materials such as glass mat, dry felt, processed asphalt, paper cores, polyester mats and crushed limestone. From start to finish, TAMKO has the right products for any project. For more information, visit www.tamko.com.
FRSA Self Insurers Fund – Get the Most from Your Workers’ Comp Carrier Since 1955, the FRSA Self Insurers Fund has been providing Workers’ Compensation insurance for the Florida roofing, sheet metal and air conditioning industries with quality services not found anywhere else in the industry. Four basic concepts set them apart from other insurance carriers – Underwriting Standards, Subcontractor Verification Services, Safety and Loss Control and Claims Reporting and Services.
Underwriting Standards

Verification with the issuing insurance agency or carrier may also be necessary. ■■ As a final safeguard, you should record your subcontractor’s insurance certificate for periodic verification (perhaps quarterly) to assure that coverage continues to remain in force. Be advised that there is no guarantee or current legal requirement that the agency or carrier who issues you a certificate will notify you if the subcontractor’s coverage is subsequently cancelled.
Underwriting is the review of proposed new members and the continuing review of existing members to assure that they meet the mandated standards. Safety and Loss Control
The FRSA Self Insurers Fund has four full-time Loss Control Representatives dedicated to assisting members in reducing and preventing injuries. Each representative has a low number of designated members to service, providing the necessary time to accomplish each company’s safety and loss control goals. Some of the services provided include: ■■ Provide safety meetings, job site inspections, shop inspections, and construction pre-inspections with the goal of preventing workplace injuries. ■■ Assist members in investigating any injuries that may occur to analyze what may have gone wrong to help prevent a recurrence in the future. ■■ FRSA-SIF Loss Control Representatives are trained in all aspects of OSHA and other safety regulations.
■■ Provide a comprehensive Loss Control Manual free of charge that can serve as the member’s adopted written safety program. ■■ Assist members in establishing training for a Florida Qualified Drug Free Workplace and will even share in the cost of setup and administration with you. ■■ FRSA-SIF believes in providing safety as a service, helping you and your employees by preventing injuries in the workplace.
Claims Reporting and Services
The Preferred Choice of Roof Vacuuming
The FRSA Self Insurers Fund has a dedicated claims staff ready to serve you. When you become a member of the FRSA Self Insurers Fund, you are important to our collective success. Our relationship can best be described as a partnership formed to reduce costs. Our goals are: ■■ To provide the most effective medical benefit delivery system to covered injured employees. ■■ To provide the best possible service to members. ■■ Keep the total injury related expenses as low as possible to reduce your overall workers’ compensation costs. As an active participant in achieving these goals, your role will be to: ■■ Maintain a safe and hazard free workplace for your employees. ■■ Cooperate with the FRSA Self Insurers Fund Loss Control Representatives who will help you prevent employee injuries. ■■ Immediately notify the FRSA Self Insurers Fund Claims Department of an employee injury at 844-677-3772, ext. 200. As an employer, you are able to provide authorization for initial medical treatment for your injured employee. Remember that any injured employee must have a post-accident drug test. Early medical intervention and expert administrative assistance combined with aggressive return to work and safety programs is a winning strategy to reduce the frequency and severity of workplace accidents. Through these proactive steps, members can reap the benefits of a safe workplace in the form of dividends; money distributed back to FRSA-SIF member companies each year. Over the past 20 years, the FRSA-SIF had redistributed over $100 million back to its members. FRSA-SIF members will be able to pick up their dividend checks at the FRSA Convention during the Welcome Reception on Thursday night or on Friday and Saturday at their booth in the Expo. Not getting a dividend back for your current insurance company? Perhaps it’s time to reconsider your options. For more information on the FRSA Self Insurers Fund, please call 800-767-3772 ext. 222 or visit, www.frsasif.com.

Southeastern Metals: More Than a Metal Manufacturer ■■ Exercising good corporate citizenship within the communities we operate
For more than 50 years, Southeastern Metals (SEMCO) and their products have been trusted for quality and tested for strength. Since the company’s founding in 1963, Southeastern Metals has grown into one of the region’s leading manufacturers of metal building products. In 1997, Gibraltar Industries acquired the company, uniting the quality product line of Southeastern Metals with the nationally respected brand name of Gibraltar. With the support and backing of Gibraltar, Southeastern Metals remains the name you can trust for quality metal building products. Southeastern Metals’ strong focus on excellence means their customers can expect superior products and outstanding service every time they call. Southeastern Metals produces over 3,000 galvanized, steel, and aluminum building components, specializing in metal roofing products, ventilation products, trims, flashings, steel framing, corner bead, drywall accessories, construction hardware, safety equipment, siding and soffit, stucco and plaster accessories, as well as Gutter Helmet, the world’s premier gutter protection system. Every product is precision engineered and manufactured to the highest standards, promoting greater durability and ensuring structural integrity after installation. SEMCO’s metal roofing adheres to the strictest standards, being both Miami Dade County, and Florida Building Code approved. They are dedicated to providing the highest value building products and services through operational excellence and diversified growth, while meeting customer and stakeholder expectations. Southeastern Metals is fully committed to the highest level of integrity in business relations with people, organizations, and applicable government agencies. They accomplish this through dedication, responsibility, and pride among all team members. Southeastern Metals’ core values include: ■■ Providing customers with products and services of the highest value and doing so honestly, fairly, lawfully, and with a sense of urgency ■■ Building long lasting relationships with customers and suppliers and doing so with the highest integrity without discrimination or deception
■■ Competing aggressively in the marketplace in a fair and honest manner Gutter Helmet was originally conceived in the 1960s by a person who wanted to keep leaves out of their gutters. However, the idea to inception would have to wait for nearly two decades. In the fall of 1981, the first of several U.S. patents was granted and “Never Clean Your Gutters Again” would become vernacular to millions of homeowners. With over thirty years of history, Gutter Helmet is the pioneer and the undisputed leader in the gutter protection industry. A total commitment to product innovation and refinement coupled with a professional dealer network, Gutter Helmet is America’s choice for gutter protection. In 2005 Southeastern Metals acquired Gutter Helmet as part of a strategic acquisition. Another Gibraltar Industries innovative product sold through a dealer network is a StealthBond©. The StealthBond© concept began during a dinner conversation with local roofing contractors and their suppliers. It was mentioned that homeowners prefer the traditional “Key West” look of a 5V Crimp metal roof, but they don’t like all the exposed screws that are necessary to install the metal roofing panels. Since structural adhesive technology has advanced tremendously in the last five years and is used for bonding components on aircraft and space shuttles, why not take advantage of this technology on metal roofing panels? StealthBond’s R&D team was challenged with this task, and a method to install 5V Crimp metal roofing without screws was born. StealthBond© is the metal roofing industry’s first concealed adhesive system utilizing structural adhesive technology. The proprietary fastening method is hidden and concealed. Stealth. StealthBond© Features: ■■ No exposed screws for 5V Crimp roofing panels and trims ■■ Eliminates most fastening penetrations allowing for a concealed fastener installation ■■ Minimizes dimpling effects of oil canning ■■ Installs faster than traditional 5V Crimp roofs ■■ Advanced adhesive system eliminates pre-drilling of screw holes
■■ Residential and light commercial applications ■■ Treating team members fairly with respect and dignity, Now homeowners can have the “Key West” look they while providing a safe and healthy work environment want without all the screws. StealthBond©. The Next Generation of Installation©. ■■ Maintaining open and honest communication with all Southeastern Metals’ corporate office and manufacturing team members base is headquartered in a 300,000 square-foot complex in ■■ Supporting and encouraging the development, creativity, Jacksonville, Fla. allowing them to service over 1,900 locaand initiative of all team members tions in the southeastern United States, and beyond. GAF Purchases Icopal
The $1.14 billion purchase of Icopal from Bahrain-based investment firm Investcorp Ltd. gives GAF added reach on both sides of the Atlantic, GAF said in a press release. Jim Schnepper, Executive Vice President of Sales at GAF, will become CEO and President of Icopal, which is now GAF’s European operating division. Tom Anderson, Senior Vice President of Planning and Supply Chain Management, will become Chief Operating Officer. The combined company will have 6,500 employees and roughly $4 billion in annual sales in 80 countries. Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. Acquires Lyf-Tym

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress Celebrating 20 Years Alison L. LaValley, CAE, NRCA, Vice President of Member Services and Development As the Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress (Alliance) embarks on its 20th anniversary, the organization is growing at a rapid pace in members and projects, proving itself to be stronger than ever. Since its inception in 1996, the Alliance continues to unite leaders throughout the roofing industry, while funding research; providing forward-thinking responses to major economic and technological issues, advancing education, and honoring workers. At 148 members strong, this diverse, thoughtful and dedicated forum of roofing contractors, suppliers, service providers and industry professionals have united together to change the course of the roofing industry by committing more than $12.3 million to help preserve and enhance the U.S. roofing industry’s success and performance. Within the last two decades, the Alliance has allocated $4.4 million to 37 research, education and technical programs and projects, including a funding a comprehensive set of roof application training programs; a future trends study to think more strategically and proactively about the future; an ergonomics study to identify and document best practices to prevent repetitive-stress and strain injuries; a cultural leadership training program to address the industry’s labor challenges; a roof reflectivity and field performance studies to monitor roof system performance; and partnered with top U.S. construction management schools to incorporate roofing-specific curriculum into undergraduate programs and fund internships to expose students to careers in roofing … just to name a few.
“There’s a lot of momentum right now with the Alliance, which ultimately leads to an interest in funding new projects and attracting new members,” says Robert McNamara, former Alliance President and President of F.J.A. Christiansen Roofing Co. Inc., a Tecta America company, Milwaukee. The advances we have made in the last 20 years, and particularly in the last few, are a testimonial of how successful we can be when everyone within the industry works together,” he added.
Affecting Change in the Industry
With a keen focus on raising awareness about careers in the roofing industry, the Alliance recently approved substantial project funding to advance ongoing educational initiatives with three well-known construction management schools in the U.S.: The Department of Construction Management at Colorado State University, Fort Collins; the McWhorter School of Building Science at Auburn University, Auburn, Ala.; and the M.E. Rinker Sr. School of Construction Management at the University of Florida, Gainesville. In February, the Alliance also sponsored its second annual Construction Management Student Design Competition, a hallmark competition to promote careers

in roofing industry management, which featured teams from Auburn University, Auburn, AL; LSU, Baton Rouge, LA; and the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. In addition to providing a significant learning opportunity, the competition fostered camaraderie, dialogue among the students and team spirit. Students were challenged to demonstrate their roofing knowledge in the areas of estimating, project management, safety and related areas for their project on the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, which also was the site for the 2016 International Roofing Expo (IRE). And the event was made possible by Alliance
member Rob Springer of Springer-Peterson Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Eaton Park, Fla., who helped secure the project for this year’s competition. The winning team from the University of Florida, which included members Eddie San Juan, Nick Loewenthal, Caleb Strauss and Drew Winant, received their school and individual trophies during NRCA’s Awards Ceremony and Cocktail Reception on Feb. 18. The Alliance also awarded its second Construction Management Faculty Scholarship to James Sullivan, director of undergraduate programs, M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management at the University of Florida, Gainesville. With the $15,000 scholarship, Sullivan developed a detailed intern program guideline that can be customized to meet the requirements of various construction management schools and fulfill ™ students required credits. A pilot program is expected to be launched by the summer of 2017.

The Alliance continued to support educational efforts and offer students financial aid through the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program by approving funding to renew five scholarships totaling $25,000, as well as five new ones at $5,000 each. Named for Melvin Kruger, NRCA former president and chief executive officer of L.E. Schwartz & Son Inc., Macon, Ga., the Alliance’s first scholarship was awarded in 1986, and since its inception has distributed $630,000 in scholarship funds to 115 students. The program is open to NRCA contractor and supplier members, their families and their employees who plan to pursue careers in the roofing industry or building construction. And to address the industry’s labor challenges, the Alliance partnered with Bilingual America, Phoenix, to conduct cultural and leadership training programs for companies with Latino workers and for Latino workers employed by non-Latino owners. A final report containing key findings, best practices and a list of challenges the industry must overcome, in addition to specific recommendations for workplace improvements that are unique to the roofing industry, were

ABC Supply offers high quality products, superior service and competitive pricing, ensuring contractors have the products they need - when and where they need them. Co-founder Ken Hendricks spent many of his formative years working with his father, who was a contractor. While learning firsthand the “ins and outs” of the roofing and siding businesses, Ken also witnessed the lack of respect that his father and his colleagues often received from their suppliers. That experience – and the lessons his father taught him about the importance of hard work, never giving up and treating people with honesty and respect – formed the basis of the dream that would become ABC Supply. ABC Supply grew rapidly by acquiring other distributors and opening new facilities. The largest of these acquisitions has been that of Bradco Supply Corp., with its nearly 2,000 associates and 128 locations, in 2010. ABC Supply also acquired Norandex Building Materials Distribution, based in Hudson, Ohio, in 2015. This acquisition added 103 locations to the ABC Supply roster and nearly 950 associates. Ken also established or acquired affiliate companies that produced some of the roofing, siding, windows and other products that ABC Supply sells. Today, the company is the largest wholesale distributor of roofing products in the United States and one of the nation’s largest distributors of siding, windows and other select exterior building products. It remains an “employee-first” company that treats its associates with respect and gives them the tools they need to succeed. It is a nine-time winner of the Gallup Great Workplace Award, which recognizes the best-performing workforces in the world, and is one of only a handful
of companies in the world to have earned the honor every year since its inception in 2007. ABC Supply offers an assortment of low-slope and steep-slope roofing products from industry-leading manufacturers, including asphalt, metal, composite, slate, cedar, concrete, clay, single ply, mod bit, built up and more, along with an array of accessories and related products such as coil for roof panels and roofing insulation. Contractors also look to ABC Supply for a wide variety of siding, windows, doors, decking and railing, stucco, gutter and cut-to-length gutter coil. The Solution Centers in ABC Supply’s branches are premier destinations for product information and selection all designed to help builders and contractors enhance their productivity and increase profitability. The centers are also an ideal place to meet with customers, discuss product and finalize color decisions. The ABC Supply Catalog Division gives professional contractors easy access to the tools, equipment and accessories they need to get the job done. The catalog contains more than 6,000 high-quality tools and specialty items from hand and power tools to fasteners, caulks, sealants, ventilation, safety equipment, apparel and accessories. ABC Supply goes the extra mile to support the success of its builders and contractors with the Customer Service Delivery System. This system ensures accuracy, consistency and efficiency throughout the buying process, from order placement to on-time delivery of material at the job site. Contractors can also benefit from using ABC Supply’s Freedom Programs. The programs are a portfolio of products and services designed to meet the unique needs of professional contractors, helping save them time and money while growing their business. A variety of marketing tools – including the Jobsite Marketing Program, the Professional Image Building Program, the Target Mail Program and the In-Home Finance program – make it easy for contractors to get the word out about their businesses. ABC Supply is dedicated to promoting and preserving the American Dream by helping people accomplish the extraordinary - based on a fundamental belief that every person has within themselves the ability to do great things. ABC Supply has as its Core Values: Respect, Opportunity, Work Hard and Have Fun, Entrepreneurial Spirit, Family, Give Back and American Pride. IKO – A Leader in the Global Roofing and Waterproofing Industry The first time you visit an IKO plant, it may surprise you; there are no big, flashy signs to advertise their presence. They are a company that is more interested in building its reputation one roof at a time rather than by bold advertising or self-promotion. But don’t mistake that “nose to the grindstone” attitude for a lack of pride. IKO has a long history of innovation, quality products and customer satisfaction and employee commitment – something they are very proud of. IKO also has a rich history of perseverance and will to be the best that is rooted in the remarkable story of their founder. In 1922, the founder began his long career in the roofing industry at the age of 17, when he started to work as a salesman in his father’s roofing manufacturing business. Despite the challenging market, through his resourcefulness and innovation, the company achieved great success and opened a second plant in Warsaw. By the early 1930s, the company had come to prominence as the second largest manufacturer in the country. The invasion of Poland in 1939 resulted in not only the loss of his business, but much of his family as well. Always the entrepreneur and innovator, he founded IKO Industries in Calgary, Alberta in 1951. The company first manufactured building paper, and expanded to include coated roll roofing. The company made its first asphalt shingle in 1954, and the rest, as they say, is history. IKO then joined the U.S. marketplace in 1979 through acquisitions and has since expanded by building new factories across North America. Today, more than 60 years after its founding, the company has grown to be among the world’s largest exporters of asphalt shingles. The company is now a worldwide enterprise, with more than 3,000 employees, and manufacturing plants in Canada, the United States, England, Belgium, Holland, France and Slovakia, and ships products to 96 countries around the globe. Despite tremendous growth, IKO has also remained firmly rooted in its family values of entrepreneurial spirit, craftsmanship and innovation. The company maintains the fierce independence of its founder, and his belief of the importance of controlling the raw materials used in its manufacturing process, known as vertical integration. Today, IKO is amongst the top vertically integrated manufacturers in its industry, and makes every major component that goes into its residential roofing products. Starting with wet chop glass fiber strands produced in Clarksville, Tennessee, which is also used in Danville, Illinois to make the glass mat used by all IKO production plants around the world; and ending with the plastic wrappers extruded and printed in an IKO owned plant in Barrie, Ontario. In between, IKO 56

oxidizes its own asphalt, crushes its own limestone, and quarries, crushes and colors its own granules and makes its own backsurfacing at a variety of locations across North America. While the residential roofing market may still be what most consumers associate with the company, IKO is also a leader in the commercial and industrial flat roofing and waterproofing business, with production plants for industrial roofing membranes, liquid waterproofing products, and ISO insulation board in both North America and Europe. IKO also strives to back the best products in the industry with the best service. The IKO family includes not just the ownership, but the thousands of dedicated employees across its global operations who share the company’s ideals of craftsmanship, attention to detail and world class service for our customers. From backroom to boardroom to the floor of the plant, the commitment of IKO’s employees is the key pillar in the company’s success in today’s competitive marketplace. IKO recently added a new asphalt shingle to the company’s line-up. Dynasty with ArmourZone is among the most advanced architectural laminated asphalt roofing shingles IKO has ever produced. The innovative feature of this new shingle’s advanced design is the addition of the “ArmourZone” – an enlarged nailing area that makes installation faster, easier and more accurate. The addition of a tear-resistant, reinforced woven band within the ArmourZone provides fastening strength over a greater surface area of the shingle, helping to resist nail pull-through. Two nailing lines, 1 ¼” apart, guide installers to Dynasty shingles’ wider nailing surface for correct nail placement. When nails are applied in this special “ArmourZone” area their fastening power ensures the shingles will perform as they should against high wind and inclement weather. The new Dynasty roofing product is made in IKO’s “Advantage” size. Because thes`e shingles are bigger than most competitors’ comparable product, installation is faster and easier. Dynasty also offers greater surface exposure to further enhance the curb appeal of the finished roof. Other features of the Dynasty shingle’s construction include IKO’s tough, Fastlock modified bitumen sealant. It’s formulated to be thick and aggressive to form a strong bond. AlgaeBlock ceramic copper-coated granules provide built-in algae-resistance, too. Homeowners will appreciate the deep shadow bands and dimensional profile of IKO’s new Dynasty shingles. There’s a choice of seven stunning colors – Biscayne, Sedona, Pacific Rim, Appalachian, Cornerstone, Castle Grey, and Glacier - all designed to complement any architectural design and appeal to the homeowner’s personal sense of style. Dynasty shingles can make a home stand out or blend into its natural surroundings. IKO – “Setting the Standard.”

Trent Cotney, P.A. Construction Law Group
Since 1999, Trent Cotney of Trent Cotney, P.A. has dedicated himself to serving the roofing industry. As a Florida Bar Board Certified Construction Lawyer, Trent specializes in roofing litigation and arbitration, including defending roofers on construction defect claims, prosecuting lien and bond claims, defending OSHA citations, contractor licensing defense, and bid protests. In addition, Trent reviews and drafts hundreds of roofing-related contracts a year for contractors, suppliers, manufacturers, and others in the industry. In 2002, Trent joined the West Coast Roofing Contractor Association (WCRCA), the Tampa Affiliate of the Florida Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association (FRSA). Although Trent understood the legal aspects of litigating roofing disputes and had worked on roofs, he wanted to be well-versed in the actual construction of roofs and joined the local association so that he could learn more about the current issues facing the roofing industry, attend manufacturer demonstrations of new and existing products, and be around others in the industry to share ideas. In 2004, he became a director for the WCRCA and remains a director to this day. In his capacity as a director and member of WCRCA, Trent writes a monthly legal article for the

newsletter, and has provided more than a dozen seminars on roofing-related legal issues for the Association. Trent became involved with FRSA in 2003 when he presented a seminar on construction defects and mold claims. He then joined the organization in 2004, became General Counsel for FRSA in 2006, and currently serves as and has been a director of the Association since 2007. Trent also serves as co-chair of the Public Relations and Marketing Committee and is a member of the FRSA Educational and Research Foundation. He provides monthly articles for FRSA’s Florida Roofing Magazine on construction-related legal topics and provides seminars each year which give contractors continuing education credits. The lawyers of Trent Cotney, P.A. all worked in construction prior to becoming lawyers, which allows them to provide real world advice combined with expert level knowledge of roofing law. The attorneys include a former roofer, masonry estimator, and geotechnical consultant. In other words, unlike its peers, the lawyers of Trent Cotney, P.A. understand the nuances of the construction industry not because they read about it in a book, but because they lived and breathed it in prior employment. Trent and his staff also represent FRSA at the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) hearings and have won many positions and motions to intervene. He also creates the e-newsletter, FRSA Legal Update, that provides valuable information to members on issues of legal concern, as those who read the March 2016 article on the Impact of MiamiDade County Fastener Restrictions will certainly attest too.
