SCOOP HIGH AND LOW TOM DIXON

Product Scoop Dining Chair High Project: Tom Dixon Studio, Coal Office Restaurant Photographer: Peer Lindgreen

It was almost by coincidence that Tom Dixon found out, he had a talent for designing. In the beginning of the 1980’s after a motorcycle accident, Dixon learned how to weld, as he had to repair his motorcycle. As a selftaught and independent designer Tom Dixon has worked for Habitat and Artek. In 2002, he established the design company, Tom Dixon.

Re-designed in 2018 for maximum comfort and visual impact. Comprised of revised and reduced silhouettes. Engineered from new foam moulded curves, Scoop hugs the contours of the body. Only represented in Denmark

05 – Tom Dixon

The Scoop Chair was developed for a Design Research Studio project for the Royal Academy of Art Restaurant in London. The brief was for a chair that was generously proportioned, comfortable and fully upholstered. The result was a rounded soft shell inspired by motor racing ‘tub’ seats.

Wingback was inspired by traditional 17th Century Wingback and balloon-back archetypes, and was developed for Shoreditch House Members Club. Its expressive sweeping curves allows designers to specify Wingback in the centre of spaces as a sculptural intervention rather than merely a piece of seating.

SURPIL CHAIR DCW ÉDITIONS

The Surpil Chair was designed by Julien-Henri Porché, who, starting in 1927 turned his attention to designing furniture made entirely from metal for use in public spaces. He made his mark on French design of the period by creating chairs that were both functional and with a line that was graceful and light through the use of two tubes which were used to form the seat and the back.

13 – DCW Éditions

The French company DCW is founded by Philippe Cazer and Frédéric Winkler, in 2007. Their mutual passion for design had its starting point in Bernard-Albin Gras and his Gras lamp, which DCW put into production, as the first design of many.

18 – Established & Sons

Product: Mauro Chair oiled oak with leather

The Mauro Chair is a stackable timber chair with plenty of character and a very unusual back story. Created by Italian designer Mauro Pasquinelli in the 1970s it has been rediscovered by Established & Sons and its alluring old-school aesthetic and futurist aspirations given a sculptural 21st-century makeover.

Read more about the story behind the Mauro Chair here.

19 – Established & Sons

The chair had not previously gone into production due to its challenging geometries and curves, explains Sebastian Wrong, design director for Established & Sons: “When it was originally designed you could never have made a sophisticated chair like this at a competitive price point, simply because the technology for chair-making in volume didn’t exist in factories as it does today. Nowadays you can use CNC routing systems that cut into solid wood and make complicated and compound curves, sections, joints and alignments that could once only be done by a craftsman.”
