true to you Lately it seems like my social sphere is made entirely of people interested in discovering more about their personality types. Everyone from my grandmother to my fellow millennials has urged me to find out my Enneagram number. After yoga one night, my classmates talked me into Photograph by Rett Peek downloading an app that gives me a daily horoscope based on my birth chart. I took both the Myers-Briggs and True Colors tests years ago, but The Five Love Languages is still on my list. One thing is for sure: Embracing your most innate traits has never been trendier. Outside of everyday interactions, one of the best ways to get a sense of someone’s personality is to take a walk through their house—provided you’re invited, of course. Paint colors, fabric choices, art on the walls—these elements are a reflection of how an individual perceives the world. And as much as you can attempt to group people by types and tests, personal style is actually just that—personal. Your home should reflect that. While putting together this issue, I found myself reflecting on what defines a home as “new” traditional, our theme this month. There are probably dozens of ways to answer that, but I think my favorite interpretation involves imbuing the home with a sense of character regardless of style. From a mix of vintage and contemporary art (page 41) to mementos from time spent across the pond (page 46), each detail tells a little bit of the story of the people who live there.

“The trays are one of my absolute favorites from my Chelsea House line because they’ll fit in almost any design,” Shayla says.

MASTER GARDENER PROJECT AT CARTI LITTLE ROCK

Visitors to CARTI Cancer Center in Little Rock have a little more color and cheer thanks to the Hans Peter Braunfisch Blooming Garden installed by six Pulaski County Master Gardeners last summer. “We are incredibly grateful to the Master Gardeners for their efforts designing and maintaining this garden,” says Adam Head, CARTI president and CEO. “As one of the first areas our patients and visitors see once they arrive on campus, the garden is integral in reflecting hope and healing. Our patients and their guests attest to its positive impact during their cancer journey, and it’s often mentioned as one of their favorite spots to visit.” Learn more at carti.com.

Little Rock-based designer Shayla Copas celebrates the release of two brand collaborations this month at High Point Market. The first is a line of accent furniture, lighting, mirrors, and accessories with manufacturer Chelsea House. “The collection is full of color and pattern, and it has a really fresh spring vibe. The pieces are very classic with a touch of glam,” Shayla says. Her second collaboration is a line of fabrics with outdoor furnishings brand Polywood, for whom she’s worked as a Design Ambassador for the past year. “It’s not common that you get set free to design what you want to design. Both those brands took that path with me and wanted me to be creative doing what I love to do.” Shayla says she intentionally used a similar color story—soft tones of green, blue, coral, and white—throughout both collections so they could potentially be used together. “It was a dream of mine to have a collection with companies that have the same branding standards that my company does,” Shayla says. “Consumers are going to see a lot of happiness in both collections because I’ve been very excited to work with these brands.” shaylacopas.com

Q&A with Certified Hand-Tied Extension Stylist Sara D’Arezzo of Salon Scarlet

Sara D’arezzo

aFTeR

What is the hand-tied extensions method? This is really an all-encompassing term to describe attaching a “weft” or curtain of hair to a client’s natural hair. First, the stylist creates a foundation of silicone beads on the client’s natural hair then the hand-tied wefts are sewn to create strong, luxurious strands. What are some of the benefits of hand-tied versus traditional extensions? One of the biggest benefits is there is no heated glue or any adhesive used in this installation process, which allows you to reuse the hair for up to a year. What experience do you have with hand-tied extensions? I was trained and certified by the House of Aglaia Salon in Memphis. Since this time, I have taught several classes and certified stylists in Arkansas and Colorado. During the last year, my clientele has increased to over 60 customers here in central Arkansas. Where do you get the hair you use? I have sourced my own manufacturer who provides hair that can be custom colored to any hue. What’s the first step to getting hand-tied extensions? I start with an in-person consultation with all potential clients. This typically lasts about 30 minutes and is a chance for us to discuss whether the client wants to add extensions for length, fullness, or both. At that time we match and create their custom color. How long does it typically take to install a client’s first set? You can expect to be in the chair from 1 to 1 ½ hours during the first installation. What maintenance is required? As the client’s natural hair grows, she will need to come in every six weeks to get an adjustment. I provide all of my clients with a set of instructions for care and maintenance to help their hair look its best for the maximum amount of time.

THE NEW TRADITIONAL ISSUE

Traditional blends with contemporary in the mantel’s trio of artwork. The largest, a vintage floral painting inherited from one of the homeowner’s grandmothers, is complemented by a Renee Bouchon abstract work and a gilded floral piece.

A NEW TIMELESS

met her clients—Tonia and

Brad McMakin and Matthew—she

their son,

sensed they were ready to build a home they would enjoy for decades to come. The couple found a site in an area particularly dear to them; Brad is the golf coach at the University of Arkansas, and this neighborhood houses the team’s practice course. “They have such a sense of community here, and really wanted to put down roots in this neighborhood,” Melissa says. Over the course of five years, Melissa and her team drew plans for a home on the site and assisted

ELEGANT MEETS COMFORTABLE

Melissa notes it was important to Tonia to create a living space that feels as comfortable as it looks elegant. Luxurious velvet chairs trimmed in bullion fringe sitting opposite a pair of more casual English roll arm chairs convey this mix. The same goes for the room’s artwork, where florals and abstracts add to the color palette of apricot and green without adhering too closely to any one style. “Layering in pieces that are a bit unexpected gives a room a well-rounded, collected look,” Melissa says.

42 At Home in Arkansas | April 2020

GREEN WITH BEAUTY

“Tonia loves green, so we incorporated it throughout the house,” Melissa says, noting the celadon Barbara Barry for Ann Sacks backsplash in the kitchen. Rather than complement the hue with a neutral color or a more predictable shade of blue, Melissa and her team paired it with shades of apricot (as seen on the barstools and in the adjoining hearth room) for a twist on tradition.

Design elements such as the honed Carrara marble and bell jar pendants over the island keep the space rooted in classics.

in the build. When it came time to work on the interiors, the McMakins had a number of early antique furniture pieces and collectibles they hoped to use in the new home. “Tonia wanted to freshen up their look and lighten the palette, but also mix in some heirloom and vintage pieces,” Melissa says. While the family’s style leans traditional, it was equally important the home be comfortable and welcoming, as they often entertain and host the golf team for less formal get-togethers. Durable fabrics, inviting chairs, and rooms that flow one into another lend themselves to these gatherings without veering from the classic flair. The result is an artful mix that suits the family and proves to be inviting for guests.

KEEPING CLOSE

The hearth room, which adjoins the kitchen, allows the family to spend time with the cook while relaxing. A built-in cabinet keeps treasured heirlooms, like Tonia’s collection of Majolica, close at hand. The brown sofa is a favorite lounging spot for the family’s black Lab, Annie. “We went with a dark, durable velvet here so she can have free rein over the space,” Melissa says of the practical and inviting fabric selection.

NOOK AND TIDY

A cozy banquette in the kitchen serves as the main dining space for the family. Melissa notes the green accents seen indoors act as a neutral against the green backdrop of a wooded area and the golf course seen through the windows. A custom, cerused oak table pairs with lattice-back chairs to provide additional seating for a crowd, while a glossy shaded pendant with a warm, brass interior lends a current polish.

“We wanted this whole house to be a simplified version of traditional style.” —Melissa Haynes, designer

Built-in drawers are a smart storage solution.

SUITE LIFE

A velvet upholstered bed frame and coordinating drapery panels carry the home’s signature green hue—interpreted in a slate variant here—into the private spaces. Contemporary lamps, which appear to have been dipped in gold leaf, lend a fresh air while playing off the waves on the mirror seen over the headboard. At the foot of the bed, classic and current mix effortlessly in the structured bench covered with an agate-inspired silk fabric. In the bath, marble, shaded sconces, and glass accents give a sleek, elegant look. “This is a timeless and clean bath they are not going to tire of in 20 years,” Melissa says.

In the Heights, Heather and Arnoud Krijt design a new construction home that feels perfectly them WRITER STEPHANIE MAXWELL NEWTON PHOTOGRAPHER RETT PEEK S T Y L I S T L AU R E N C E R R ATO

ot many couples start planning their new build several months into dating.

A grouping of antique sunburst mirrors and framed drawings makes for a meaningful accent wall in the living room.

But then, not much about Heather and Arnoud Krijt’s story is typical. She, an interior designer with a background in ballet and bio-chemistry, and he, a Dutch native who moved to the U.S. in college to play golf, met while Heather was living in Dallas. “He said, I’m going to build a house and I think you should help. I was like, I just met you!” Heather recalls, laughing. Of course, Heather was more than happy to help design the perfect home with her now-husband. “I knew I wanted a house with a real entry, a formal living room, and a formal dining room. And I love old Paris apartments, so I also wanted this to feel like an old house architecturally,” she says, pointing to herringbone hardwood floors, the arched front entry door, and an abundance of detailed millwork as examples. “Since Arnoud is from the Netherlands, he was on board with all of the European touches.” However, getting to this point was not easy. While looking for lots to build on, the Krijts put offers on three different houses in the neighborhood. After those all fell through, the couple got creative: “We handwrote 19 notes and dropped them off in people’s mailboxes begging them to sell to us,” Heather says. “We were driving around delivering all these notes and we saw a ‘for sale by owner’ sign in the yard of this house that had been put up the day before.” A neighbor encouraged the couple to put an offer on the house, and by the end of the day, they had their lot. “We had been looking and putting offers out for about eight months at that point,” she says. “You end up where you’re supposed to be. It all worked out as it should.”

April 2020 | athomearkansas.com 47

PARISIAN INFLUENCE

Just off the entry, the living room’s 11-foot ceilings and showstopping molding—all painted the same pinkish gray as the walls—lend an air of drama upon first stepping into the home. The room also showcases Heather’s love for mixing classic and contemporary styles. Case in point: The sputnik-style light fixture and acrylic and glass coffee table are perfectly at home alongside a tufted sofa and tailored drapes and valances.

48 At Home in Arkansas | April 2020

April 2020 | athomearkansas.com 49

Since the Krijts are both tall, all of the cabinetry and doorways were built slightly higher than standard to account for their height.

KITCHEN CLASSICS

Heather approached the design of the kitchen with the future in mind. “We want to have kids, so I imagine this as the place where we can spread out homework on the island, and I can still cook on one side. There’s room for everybody,” she says. Neutral shades and brass finishes keep the room clean and polished and allow the breakfast nook, a built-in banquette enveloped in navy, to shine. “It feels like its own little secluded area, and because there are really no walls in the kitchen, just windows, it’s kind of this bright happy corner,” Heather says. “We use it every day.”

SherwinWilliams’ “Indigo Batik”

A walk-in pantry provides out-of-sight storage for food, serving dishes, and appliances. Cabinetry paneling on saloonstyle doors blends with the rest of the butler’s pantry, making it a seamless passthrough from the kitchen to dining room when entertaining.

DINING FINE

The navy hue from the kitchen’s breakfast nook appears again in the butler’s pantry, as does the herringbone-laid flooring from the entry. Heather designed the dining room in a monochromatic palette broken up by texture. “There’s grasscloth on the wall that gives it some nice warmth, then the lacquered ceiling, and finally these chairs,” she says. “These are antique, and I spent so long trying to find a fabric that would match the color!” A Murano chandelier and green lamp speak to Heather’s love of Venetian glass while adding a hint of glamour to the room. April 2020 | athomearkansas.com 51

SOPHISTICATED SUITE

After choosing a dark taupe grasscloth for the master bedroom, shades of blue found in a framed Gracie wallpaper panel were the jumping off point for the rest of the design. “Because this is such a big room with a vaulted ceiling, I wanted to bring it down a bit with carpet and a darker grasscloth to make it feel a little warmer and more intimate,” Heather says. Light blue carries into the master bath where a freestanding clawfoot tub makes a statement.

A pretty-in-pink room off the master bath serves as Heather’s vanity, complete with plenty of natural light and a small Murano glass “Palmette” chandelier.

52 At Home in Arkansas | April 2020

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD

“Arnoud had a little more input on the design in his office,” Heather says of the masculine retreat (below). “He helped with the paint color, and we picked out the desk together—he’s so tall, so he wanted to sit in it and approve everything.” The décor, including framed golf club drawings over the blue armchair and Dutch figurines dotting the shelves of the built-ins, are nods to his hobbies and heritage. In Heather’s office (right), a cheery blue hue appears on the builtin desk and trim as well as the wallcovering, a pattern called “Daydreams” by Dallas artist Ann Jackson. “It’s a smaller space, so you can get away with doing something a little more fun,” Heather says.

Most rooms, including both offices, feature custom paint colors.

ROOM FOR A CROWD

The Salters wanted a living room large enough to accommodate their family and friends during informal gatherings as well as fundraisers and events in their home. “I have 45 women in my Sunday school class, and I wanted us all to be able to be together in this room, Susan says. Tami recovered a pair of wing chairs the couple already owned and paired them with an edgy acrylic coffee table and contemporary art for a fresh appeal. French doors are concealed and softened by 22-foot window treatments.

Susan Salter grew accustomed to a Her husband, Gene, would build a beautiful home and move their family into it, only to move out again when the home sold to a client. “When we had our four boys, I knew I couldn’t do that anymore, so we stayed in our last house for 26 years until they were all out on their own,” she says. As grandchildren began to enter their lives, the Salters desired a home well-suited to their next chapter of life. They decided to build in their beloved city of Conway and worked on plans for a home where the entire family—sons, daughters-in-law, and grandkids included—could gather, putting special emphasis on rooms for the kids and places for them to play. As plans began to come together, Susan and Gene turned to friend and designer Tami Risinger to personalize the home and pull the look together. “Susan wanted this house to feel young and updated—in other words, not like a grandma’s house,” Tami laughs. “Although the Salters had a lot of traditional pieces, I kind of threw in modern accents here and there, and I think Susan liked that because it was unexpected.” certain pattern:

COOKING UP STYLE

The backsplash was the inspiration for the kitchen. “I saw this before the project really even got rolling and knew Susan would love it, too,” Tami says of the tile, which pairs with Taj Mahal quartzite countertops featuring a tiny hint of green. Over the range, a custom hood with brass details coordinates with the lighting and hardware. “I showed Gene a picture, and he was able to make it happen,” Tami says. A hearth room adjoins the kitchen, allowing everyone to be in on the action when the couple is cooking for a crowd.

“I wanted our walls to have pictures that tell our story.” —Susan Salter, homeowner

Susan commissioned Conway artist Maura Weir to paint a seascape from a photograph she took while on a Florida trip with friends. The painting, “The Lovely Sea Shore,” now hangs in the Salters’ dining room.

58 At Home in Arkansas | April 2020

MASTER MIX

The master bedroom is no exception in keeping with the home’s blend of modern and traditional. Two clean-lined upholstered chairs are paired with a table that once belonged to Susan’s grandmother and holds sentimental value for the family. Tami notes French country influence can be seen in the bed, bench, and nightstands, while a trio of mixed-media art by local artist Nikki Burk draws the eye above the bed. “Not everything needs to be a painting or a canvas,” Tami says of the slightly more contemporary pieces.

FORMAL FLAIR

Adjacent to the front entry is the home’s formal dining room (opposite page) where the Salters can host 14 around the table. Details of the space signal the room’s slightly dressier design. For example, a paint treatment involving a repeated process of painting and sanding gives the look of patent leather. Overhead, an acrylic and brushed gold chandelier adds a layer of polish.

April 2020 | athomearkansas.com 59

EASY ELEGANCE

Sophisticated details abound in the neutral-toned master bath, which features a soaking tub and zero-threshold, walkin shower. A mix of marble in different scales and patterns covers the walls and carries underfoot with a border acting almost like a rug on the heated floors. Tami incorporated the home’s signature color of blue in the wallpaper, while brass finishes and a Suzanne Kasler for Hickory Chair vanity seat catch the eye.

60 At Home in Arkansas | April 2020

SLUMBER PARTY READY

In addition to one grandson, the Salters have five granddaughters ranging in age from 15 to 3. Wanting a place where they would all feel at home when they stay over, Tami and Susan dreamed up a bunkroom with spaces for not only sleeping, but also playing and getting ready. Patterned carpet and what Tami refers to as a “fun chandelier with a modern twist” give the room an extra dose of personality that is amplified when the girls visit.

ebb & flow When it comes to traditional style, blue and white are, perhaps, America’s favorite color pairing—and the tabletop is no exception. Flow Blue china has been a staple in homes across the country since the mid 1800s. Named for and identified by its blue ink, which appears to bleed (or “flow”) to give a blurred effect, the design can be found on a wide variety of pieces from vases to teapots. The look is achieved with the addition of ammonia or lime during the glazing process; however, it’s uncertain whether the first instance of its creation was intentional or a happy accident. Whatever the case, it caught on and was highly popular through World War I. Landscape scenes, chinoiserie, and florals are among the most prevalent depictions. Because it was widely produced in the United States, pieces are readily found in antique shops and loved ones’ treasured cupboards today.
