looking forward People often ask me how far ahead we work on an issue. While the simple answer is a couple of months, the truth is we’re constantly on the hunt for houses to feature and stories to tell—even for issues a year or two out. Most of stories in this issue were slated long before the pandemic hit Photograph by Rett Peek in March. It wasn’t until we interviewed the designers and homeowners several weeks ago that we started to hear versions of the same refrain: Now that we’re spending so much time at home, I’m so thankful I love my house. Whether it’s a bigger kitchen where they can dive into adventurous new recipes (page 54), a spa-like bathroom complete with a steam shower (page 58), or the peaceful retreat of a backyard pool (page 31), these spaces have been vital for a sense of calm in an uncertain world. You’ll notice another common thread throughout the features in our annual Kitchen & Bath Issue: home bars and open floor plans perfect for entertaining. Folks are eager to extend their social circles once again, to fill their homes with familiar faces and fellowship. And while we might not be quite at that point yet, there’s optimism in looking forward to it.

Long before Sandra and Steve Combs purchased AAA Home Center in Little Rock in 1986, the couple knew they wanted to create a family business. PLAY ON PALETTE
The walls and doors are painted “French Gray” and the crown molding is “Light Gray,” both by Farrow & Ball, and both with more green and beige tones than their names imply. The rest of the molding is a mix of the two colors, which plays into the theme of “subtle tonal shifts” Jessica was mindful of throughout the design.
A passion for the past brought designer Jessica DeBari and her clients together for this dining room makeover. “We live a few blocks away, and our sons are about the same age,” Jessica says. “We’ve bonded over the trials of renovating older houses as well as antiques. We all love going on these little treasure hunts.” Knowing Jessica had a background in restoration work, the couple called on her to help remove an unsightly mural in their new home’s dining room. “They have traveled quite extensively to France over the years, and they wanted to get the look of a French boiserie, a decorative floor-to-ceiling woodwork usually with a grand focal point on one wall,” Jessica says. Additionally, the designer assisted in finishing out the room with new paint, furnishings, and accessories that better suit her clients’ eclectic tastes. First, the walls were coated in a sage green hue that plays off the natural elements of the design, including an antelopeprint rug and antler mounts, as well as the green velvet dining chairs. Playful pieces abound to keep the otherwise traditional room feeling fresh. “We picked simple float frames for either side of the mirror to temper some of the fanciness,” Jessica says of the four pieces depicting blueprints for a French castle. Overall, the effect is a formal dining room that showcases its owners’ worldly style and appreciation for art.

After helping the homeowners source and restore a 7-foot, 19th century mirror, Jessica designed an extension that would incorporate the new addition seamlessly into the chair rail and crown molding, thus completing the desired boiserie effect in place of the previous mural.

The owners of this west Little Rock home fell in love with its peaceful setting the first time they laid eyes on it.
Wooded areas, space to roam, and a backyard with lots of potential drew them in; however, they were eager to put their own touch on the space. “The property was absolutely beautiful, and I could envision making the backyard a resort just for us,” one of the homeowners says. Following a friend’s recommendation, the couple brought in David Munsey, III, of Better Lawns & Gardens to bring the vision to life. “My husband and I ended up meeting with David separately, but he listened to both of us—which is so important—and understood what we wanted,” she says. Their wish list included turning a grassy open space into a pool and lounge area while updating and expanding the outdoor kitchen. “They wanted to be able to take full advantage of everything the property has to offer,” David says, noting they created other satellite areas outside of this main space to allow the couple to take in all of its beauty in different seasons.

“Two-tone cabinetry can be tricky,” Kathryn points out. To keep visual balance in the space, the designer opted to paint the upper cabinets the same color as the walls, “Gossamer Veil” by SherwinWilliams, while the base cabinetry stands out in “Sea Salt,” also by Sherwin-Williams.

Just over five years ago, Lynn Baker contacted designer K athryn LeM aster to help renovate a recently inherited childhood home. However, as life goes, Lynn’s wants and needs changed soon after the project (which was featured in At Home in Arkansas in May 2015) was completed. “The house felt a little too big for me,” Lynn says. “I also got a dog and needed a fenced yard, and I took up pottery as a hobby and really needed a space dedicated to that.” All of these reasons added up to a move less than a mile down the road into a charming 1950s home. “I walked in and saw the fireplace and original hardwoods, and, most importantly, I saw potential,” Lynn says. Calling once again on Kathryn’s talents, the pair transformed the house from a three-bedroom, onebath residence to a two-bedroom, two-bath home. Their goal was to create spaces that functioned more aptly for Lynn—namely, the kitchen. “The kitchen was way too small, but I was willing to sacrifice a bedroom to get what I wanted,” Lynn says. By removing a wall between the living room and existing

kitchen and getting rid of the aforementioned bedroom, she gained much-needed square footage in the kitchen. The updated layout also afforded space for a dining table and a small office enclosed behind sliding doors. The U-shaped kitchen was outfitted with new cabinetry while original hardwoods were refinished to add to the cottage charm. Additionally, the back door was relocated to provide access to a newly created garage, while a stacked washer/dryer unit found a new home in the master suite’s laundry area. Aside from those shifts, Kathryn was able to incorporate a prep area and bar sink, a feature from Lynn’s previous kitchen she used frequently. This area sits opposite the pantry, creating a zone close to the dining space where guests can help themselves to a snack or beverage without getting into the main traffic flow of the kitchen’s workspace. As for the aesthetics, Kathryn notes the style is “all very organic.” “Lynn has a love of gardening and ceramics, and we tried to select textural, natural items to convey this.” Building off the neutral hues as well as the orange and green used in the nearby living room, a floral peach-hued Roman shade complements a pottery collection displayed on cypress wood open shelving. “When my niece came to see it, she said, This house feels 100 percent like you, and that was the biggest compliment to me,” Lynn says. This contemporary home in Fayetteville was built for togetherness. “They’re a big, busy family, so they wanted their house to be a place they could all gather and be together,” says designer Casey Sarkin, who worked with the homeowners on the plans. “We also designed it to be clean with lots of built-in organization, because she doesn’t like a lot of clutter.” Because of the open floor plan, the designer also aimed to create a kitchen that would draw people in as soon as they walk in the front door. “We intentionally left this all really open, and since you can see it from the foyer, the living room, and the dining room, it needed to be a display space as well as function as a kitchen,” Casey says. “We wanted it to feel modern yet warm.” To this end, natural elements—especially wood— were used in the kitchen (as well as the rest of the home) to add depth to the linear design. The cabinetry and island were stained a translucent brownishblack to allow the wood grain to show through while

Because the homeowner loves organization and a clutter-free home, Casey planned this walk-in pantry near the kitchen to be oh-so-much-more than a pantry—it’s a gift-wrap station, storage for seasonal and serving pieces, mail drop, and even has outlets in the island to create a workspace. Because of the lack of natural light, Casey used a lighter wood on the floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and had it stained in a translucent silver color that gives it a bright sheen.

This effect is balanced by a lighter walnut stain on the trim and open shelving. “They’re very outdoorsy people, and we brought some of that organic influence into the design,” Casey says. Curved barstools by midcentury architect Norman Cherner and an iridescent backsplash add shape and polish. In the master bathroom, the darker tone of the kitchen gives way to a lighter, brighter atmosphere. “We wanted the master bath to have a little gold sparkle along with the clean white countertops and herringbone marble floors,” Casey says, pointing to the brass fixtures and hardware and Kelly Wearstler sconces. “In the his-and-hers vanities, we put that gorgeous lucite and lambswool seat on her side to give it kind of a glamorous feel, while the walnut lets his side feel a little masculine.”

GLAMOROUS RETREAT
A steam shower (complete with a transom window) and classic soaker tub give the master bath a spa-like quality. To conceal the steam generator, Casey designed a tall linen cabinet that also provides plenty of storage for towels and toiletries. The woven blinds near the tub can be managed by a remote control as well as a timer set throughout the day.

Custom Blend Parisian influence and vintage style mix in designer Sarah Parsley’s Conway kitchen and bath
Sarah Parsley seems to have a natural knack for design and homebuilding. “My dad was a builder for most of my life, so I think it’s innately in my blood,” she laughs. After studying apparel design at the University of Arkansas, Sarah worked for local lighting manufacturer Mastercraft Lamps for a number of years. Here, while designing vignettes for marketing purposes, her passion for interiors grew, as did her confidence in her abilities. This prompted her to launch Sarah M. Parsley Design five years ago. “I love color, and I like to mix pattern; I think that’s something that makes me different in our industry,” she says. “I’m also drawn to a number of design styles.” In 2018, she had the opportunity to put her talent to work for her own family when she and her husband, Aaron, decided to build a home for themselves and their two young children, Monroe and AidenGrace, in Sarah’s native Conway.

The inspiration for the kitchen and bath in particular was “vintage Paris meets the 1950s.” “I was watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is set in the ’50s, when I was working on this, and that definitely inspired the diner feel in the kitchen,” she says. The scheme started with a Clarence House wallpaper seen in the breakfast nook. Its blue hue prompted a similar shade on the banquette and island, which she notes contrasts with the rich black seen on the rest of the cabinetry and the range hood. Delicate gold accents, bistro-style chairs, and an abundance of dishware, art, and decorative pieces add a finishing layer of personalization. Since creating a family space was also a top priority, features such as leather barstools and a vinyl covering on the banquette were selected to stand up to everyday use, while a large-scale range provides room to prepare multiple dishes at once. “We cook at home a lot, so we really needed this to function well for us,” Sarah says. A similar aesthetic carries to the master bath, a linear space featuring a double vanity, shower, and soaking tub. “This is not a huge bath, but I didn’t feel we needed the square footage here,” she says, noting smart organization allows for all the necessary features. Since the space is small, Sarah was able to carry subway tile up the full expanse of the vanity wall and add Osborne & Little’s “Swan Lake” wallpaper—a longtime favorite of hers—near the tub. Venetian-style mirrors pair with contemporary pendants to bring a mix of old and new.

“I like quirky art,” Sarah says in reference to the framed print hanging near the tub. “It’s a little modern and a little vintage, which is what I’m all about.”

Inspired by time spent in California and Colorado, a family calls on designer Jill White to create a kitchen reflective of their lifestyle and passions

Jill notes the kitchen, lounge area, and bar were all designed for entertaining. The island features a 5-foot sink with two faucets and interchangeable accessories, such as a colander, to allow for simple meal prep for a crowd. Barstools surround this hub and line the ledge overlooking the lounge area, giving guests multiple places to perch. Black accents, wood countertops, and Aspen-inspired accessories unite the different zones. One of the only carryovers from the previous space was a pair of leather and iron lodge-style chandeliers.
Brown wood floors were swapped for a chic matte black selection that fully plays into the palette.
A family-friendly feel and the allure of a home with a backyard were enticing attributes when Noel and Dr. Brian Reemtsen relocated to Little Rock from Los Angeles with their three daughters. They fell in love with and purchased a traditional-style home near the city’s center that lacked one thing: a spacious kitchen. “This house was different for us, and we were looking to start something new,” Noel says in regard to the style. “We loved everything but the kitchen; we have always lived in homes with fairly large kitchens and open plans that flowed into a family room.” Knowing the problem was not without remedy, they turned to contractor Chuck Hamilton, who introduced the Reemtsens to designer Jill White. “We wanted to lighten the space, open it up, and make it user-friendly for our family,” Noel says. “Our vision completely meshed with Jill’s and Chuck’s, and we shared a lot of interaction and ideas.”

For starters, Chuck and his team opened up the rooms by removing a wall between the kitchen and living area to create one flowing space and add a counter. “This ledge was made for entertaining; you can be in the kitchen but look into the living room and feel like you’re a part of what is going on there,” Jill says. Additionally, a hallway was closed off and a built-in desk removed to allow for the creation of the glass-door “pretty pantry,” which Jill notes holds the family’s everyday dishes along the top while also offering concealed storage for small appliances. In the living area, a large wall with two doorways was ripped out to make way for a new bar complete with a keg beer dispenser and wine fridge, while a glass wine cellar was born from an under-utilized built-in. However, perhaps, the biggest change was overhead, where low ceilings with wood-stained coffered beams were traded for a planked, vaulted ceiling painted in white. While addressing functionality was key, an updated aesthetic was also at the forefront of the renovation. “The inspiration was the combo of them coming here from California and their love of Aspen,” Jill says. “They have great style and are super hip.” To this point, a streamlined palette of black, white, and blue runs throughout the spaces, while features such as rich walnut countertops and polished brass bring warmth with an edge. “This space has really drawn our family together,” Noel says. “And I’m so thankful we finished it right before the pandemic; it’s allowed us to be collaborative and spend more time together making meals.”

SLEEK STORAGE
Chuck and Jill began to brainstorm ideas on how to transform a built-in area near the fireplace. “He said, What if it was all glass, and then the idea grew,” Jill recalls. The two came up with a quick napkin drawing (which Jill still has on her design board) for a wine cellar that is as visually appealing as it is functional.

A young family renovates two of a home’s hardest-working rooms to maximize functionality and match their personal style When Drs. Kimberly and Kirk Reynolds called designer K rista Lewis of K. Lewis I nterior D esign, they wanted to make their 1970 s ranch-style house work for them and their three young children.
After listening to their wants and needs for the spaces, Krista knew she could help them achieve a more contemporary look and functional layout with the help of contractor Jon Callahan. “This house had more of a traditional flavor; there was a lot of beige and red, and it just didn’t fit their style,” Jon says. “They loved the location and wanted to make it more livable, and we were excited to help them do that.” Starting in the kitchen, Jon and his team raised the roofline to allow for 10-foot ceilings, which brings in
more light and gives the feel of a larger space. Removing a wall opened up the kitchen to the family room, allowing the couple to see their kids play while they prepare meals or entertain friends. “Kirk is a true cook and put thought into the placement of the appliances and layout of the kitchen for functionality,” Krista says. For example, the refrigerator, freezer, microwave, and a warming drawer sit against the back wall, while the stove and prep area are more centrally located. Additionally, cabinets were traded for deep drawers in both the island and much of the perimeter space. “The layout changed so much; it really works for them now,” Krista says. “With the playroom, family room, and dining room all connecting to the kitchen, everything happens here.”

In terms of aesthetics, the couple opted for an engineered quartz countertop to give the look of marble with extreme durability. “We did a waterfall edge on both ends of this countertop to make it a little more contemporary,” Krista says. Other features such as the blue hexagon backsplash and the mix of black and brass light fixtures add to this feel. “Their previous house was midcentury modern so you can also see some carryovers in this design,” Krista says pointing to the breakfast table and chairs. In the master bath, the square footage stayed the same but the space was gutted and rearranged to streamline the design. “The tub was on a deck before; we modernized this by swapping it for a freestanding version,” Jon says. Upper cabinetry was removed to make the room feel larger and to create more countertop space. Heated floors and a steam shower provide the comforts of a retreat for the busy parents, while polished accents elevate the look. “The brass inlay on the tile really makes this design feel young and the space feel special,” Krista says.

Walking through this home in Conway is like being transported to a historic residence in the French Quarter. From the exposed brick and lantern pendants to the antique art and stocked bar, you would never guess this was once a dilapidated house in central Arkansas. Breathing new life into such a structure is a challenge Niki Thompson of Storybook Renovations invites. Her business is built around flipping homes, all with a precise theme laid out in her head before she ever gets started. “I think of a story first, then make sure every decision lines up with that story. It just results in a really cohesive design,” she says. For this remodel, however, she invited the homeowner along for the ride. “I flipped a house that one of his best friends purchased, and he contacted me wanting to know if I’d do a house for him. From the very beginning, he wanted it to have a New Orleans feel,” Niki says. “I went to look at the property, and I could see it had a lot of potential. The home already had some Greek Revival elements, which are common in the French Quarter,” she says. Once they got started, Niki revised the home’s layout to create a foyer, a larger kitchen, and an open floor plan, all the while keeping their New Orleans-inspired story in mind.

Niki’s team was able to split bricks unearthed during demolition into veneers to create the backsplash in the kitchen. Dentil molding on the cabinetry enhances the home’s Greek Revival style, while lantern-style pendants play perfectly into the remodel’s French Quarter inspiration.

The homeowner’s love of entertaining and cocktails was taken into consideration when designing the kitchen. The iron shelving displaying his well-stocked bar was a find from Ballard Designs that fit the bill for storage over the built-in beer keg and tap.

While Niki designs the interiors and contracts all of the labor for her projects, she works closely with Donna Benton of WaterHouse Market to source furniture and décor for staging before each open house. Donna’s business is also unique; in addition to helping clients find new and vintage furnishings, she restores antiques, upholsters, and builds original pieces in her workshop. She, like Niki, loves to incorporate a story into her projects. “After Niki helped the homeowner with the bones of the house, that’s when I stepped in to help him continue that look through every detail, right down to the dishes he uses,” she says. Donna brought an inherited quality to the story by incorporating found art into the décor and mismatched silverware and Blue Willow china into his entertaining essentials. “I try to implement vintage and antiques into all of my work because I think that really sets it apart from an average design,” Donna says. This is evident in the master bath as well, where a worn rug, funky portrait, and wooden chair give the brand-new hammered copper tub an heirloom charm. “I always bring a wooden element to the bathroom, where everything is painted and tiled,” Donna says of the antique French chair. “And, again, that French element tied into the story we’re trying to tell with the house.”

cast-iron cookware There are many reasons to love cast iron. Chief among them is durability, which explains why the same pieces are used for decades and even handed down to the next generation. Aside from that, its popularity endures because it stands up to extremely high temperatures, meaning it works as well around a campfire as it does in the oven. But, perhaps, most of the lore surrounding the cookware has to do with one word: seasoning. Any cook will tell you cast iron—whether a skillet, a cornbread pan, or a Dutch oven—is only as good as its seasoning, which must be acquired. The more you cook in your pieces, the more layers of oil patina they will have. Much like a favorite recipe, the seasoning on cast iron gets better every time it’s used.
