Top Conformation Dogs of 2004 Dream it, Live it, Achieve it Wellness: PWDCA Survey New Board member Pupography Upcoming Events Sniffing across the Country www.pwdcc.org PWDCC Waterlog

Congratulations on choosing a wonderful breed, you’ll have many years to enjoy your pup and the PWDCC New Puppy Introductory Offer will help start you off. The PWDCC is the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC, see www.ckc.ca) sanctioned National Breed Club! Our responsibilities include the breed standard, qualifying to provide CKC events, rescue and re-homing and much more. It’s a club across Canada that sponsors events that are fun and informative, including seminars on the many activities you can enjoy with our breed and on health and training issues also. See our web site events section from the home page for a schedule of upcoming events and read about past events. Our web site has general information and a protected section for members only at www.pwdcc.org. The Waterlog, our quarterly newsletter, available to members only, is distributed on the web site and by mail. It reports on events, current issues and showcases our members and their dogs. The New Puppy Introductory Offer will give you a taste of all this for the first year of your puppy’s life for only $20.00 ($15.00 for those joining after Sept. 1). You will receive 3 Waterlogs, one with your application and 2 mailed to you (1 mailed for those joining after Sept. 1). You will have access to the member only web site, with our Forum area for chatting. You are welcome to come to club events, but puppies under one year aren’t ready to fully participate in some activities. Next year you can become full members. Membership is $35.00 for the 1st member and $10.00 for each additional family member. Your email address is important to us! Email is used for ongoing communication, announcements, updates, etc. So don’t forget to provide it to us on the NPP application form.

The PWDCC Puppy Program is open to all PWDCC breeders, not only those who participate in the PWDCC Available Puppies Listing. It gives puppy people an introduction to the club and the world of pure bred dogs. Puppy membership benefits include the Waterlog, club events, access to archived Waterlogs and the searchable membership directory. This gives them opportunities to meet other puppy and experienced owners to network about resources in their neighbourhood and more. For just $1.00 per puppy, the breeder can choose to purchase the membership on behalf of their owners or make this part of their purchase package. A win-win for all!

Please mail your completed application and cheque, money order, payable to PWDCC to our Secretary Roslyn Eskind, 471 Richmond Street West, Toronto ON M5V 1X9, or email roslyn@pwdcc.org, or use PayPal from our web site home page member application button.

About the PWD The Portuguese Water Dog is a strong, robust, medium-sized, agile dog with the stamina and endurance to do a full day’s work. The breed is a loyal, affectionate, energetic, intelligent family companion and watch dog and it thrives on and demands human attention. Its attractive, playful appearance often belies its true character. It remains a true working dog, tough and independent at times, not a dog for everybody. The life expectancy of the average Portuguese Water Dog is 12 to 15 years. They tend to mature slowly and remain active well into their senior years. Daily doses of exercise are a must or the PWD will provide its own exuberant exercise indoors. PWDs require an owner as active, involved and intelligent as they are or they will soon be running the household and getting into mischief. These dogs enjoy structured activity to channel their energy and intelligence, Agility, Flyball, Obedience, Rally-O and Water Work are all great outlets and help develop the special bond with his people that the PWD needs to thrive.

ThePresident’sLetter It’s hard to believe another year is almost at an end! What a great year for our club. Our Board of Directors continues to work diligently on our goals. We continue to be committed to developing our Rescue Program that includes resource development and fundraising, building and expanding our membership base and supporting our volunteers who work hard to make all of our events a success. Special thanks to the past BC PWD club who donated over $3,000.00 to our rescue program fund. Watch the Waterlog and our Facebook page for details regarding our first Rescue fundraising event to be held on May 30, 2015 in various locations across the country. We continue to need foster homes and training professionals across the country to support rescue. Please let Michelle Jackson, our Rescue Co-ordinator know if you wish to be put on our resource list for 2015. Another new event for 2015 is an Advanced Water Camp for the Working and Courier levels that will be held at Laurel Creek Conservation area, Waterloo, Ontario June 6, 2015. Many thanks to our Ontario Branch for their continued commitment to developing and planning our water program.

We encourage all of our breeder members to assist us to develop and expand our membership base. We have revamped the Puppy Membership Introductory Program and are now offering it for a minimal fee of $1.00 per membership. Contact Deirdre Hall for more details. All proceeds from this program continue to be allocated to our Rescue Program. We are hoping that puppy members, at the end of the one year term, will join our club. This strategy will contribute to new ideas and hopefully, new volunteers in our club. I would like to thank all of our members for their continued support of our club. Wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday season. We are all looking forward to a very successful and fulfilling 2015! Sharon Lapstra, MSW, President, PWDCC

Dr. Jean Dodds on Vaccine Protocols and Titers Dr. Jean Dodds Vaccine Protocol for 2014 For Dr. Dodds’ position on vaccines, titers and more visit: http://drjeandoddspethealthresource.tumblr.com/archive Note: The following vaccine protocol is offered for those dogs where minimal vaccinations are advisable or desirable. The schedule is one Dr. Dodds recommends and should not be interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It’s a matter of professional judgment and choice. 9-10 Weeks Old: Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV (e.g. Merck Nobivac [Intervet Progard] Puppy DPV) 14-16 Weeks: Same as above 20 Weeks or Older (if allowable by law): Rabies 1 Year: Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV (optional = titer) 1 Year after the initial dose: Rabies, killed 3-year product (give 3-4 weeks apart from distemper/parvovirus booster) Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired. Vaccinate for rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to be obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In that case, a rabies antibody titer can also be performed to accompany the waiver request. See the Rabies Challenge Fund website. Dr. Dodds considers infectious canine hepatitis (adenovirus-1), canine adenovirus-2, bordetella, canine influenza, canine coronavirus, leptospirosis, and Lyme regional and situational. Please research the prevalence in your area, and discuss it with your veterinarian. W. Jean Dodds, DVM Hemopet / NutriScan 11561 Salinaz Avenue Garden Grove, CA 92843

Dr. Karen Becker of Mercola Health Pets interviewed Dr. Jean Dodds November 4, 2013. Dr. Dodds is an incredibly busy woman, and among her many undertakings is her involvement, along with Dr. Ron Schultz, in the Rabies Challenge Fund (www.rabieschallengefund.org). The purpose of the fund is to determine the duration of immunity conveyed by rabies vaccines, with the goal of extending the required interval for rabies boosters to five and then to seven years. Dr. Dodds has agreed to discuss antibody titers with us. It’s a confusing topic. Not only are there different types of titers and different methods of titering, but the “when,” “how” and “why” of titering confuses not only pet owners, but veterinarians as well. So I asked Dr. Dodds to start by explaining what a titer actually is. Dr. Becker: What, Exactly, Is an Antibody Titer? Dr. Dodds: A titer is a blood sample from which the serum is analyzed to determine the level of antibodies present to an infectious agent like the distemper virus, parvo, hepatitis, and other diseases. When the blood serum antibody level is measured quantitatively, we are measuring a combination of the animal’s natural exposure to the infectious agent as well as vaccinations against it. Dr. Becker: Please explain why some diseases are only acquired once (and thereafter, the animal has lifetime immunity), whereas other diseases pose an ongoing threat throughout an animal’s life. 'Sterile' (Lifetime) Immunity versus Short-lived Immunity Dr. Dodds: Certain diseases produce what we call “sterile immunity.” Those diseases include distemper, parvo, and hepatitis in dogs. When an animal is exposed to these diseases and recovers, or is vaccinated properly against them, the animal becomes immunized. And we must keep in mind that immunization is the outcome of proper vaccination. The act of administering a vaccine doesn’t necessarily mean the animal has been immunized against the disease. When an animal is properly vaccinated and becomes immunized, he receives sterile immunity, which is long lasting – a minimum of seven to nine years, to a maximum of lifetime immunity – as measured by titer tests. This means the pet cannot become infected, nor will he shed the virus should he be exposed. (Since the diseases of distemper, parvo, and hepatitis are everywhere, the risk of exposure is constant.) There are other vaccines that do not produce sterile immunity. Those are vaccines against Lyme disease, leptospirosis, bordetella, and other upper respiratory/kennel cough-type viruses, and even canine influenza. The vaccines against these diseases don’t last very long – typically seven months to a year. The antibody levels against these diseases, as measured by titer tests, fall off with each successive year. Does that mean the animal is not protected against the disease? Dr. Dodds: The answer to that question is unclear. There are antibody titer levels, and there are things called immune memory cells, which remain for a lifetime. Even with low titer values following vaccination, pets may still be protected for up to a year or even longer by immune memory cells if exposed to one of these diseases. The problem, I guess, is how do you know when you do a titer against one of the shorter-lived agents in terms of duration of

12

DECEMBER 2014

www.pwdcc.org PWDCC Waterlog

immunity… how do you know that the animal is really protected or not? You’re not going to challenge them [by deliberately exposing them to the virus or bacterium] to make that determination. For those shorter-lived vaccines, if they’re needed at all – and that’s a very big IF – animals may need to be vaccinated more often, like every 18 months to two years. This is in contrast to the sterile immunity core vaccines for distemper, parvo, and hepatitis, which we should not have to administer after pets reach midlife, as long as they have measurable titer values. In human terms, we could compare veterinary core vaccines to polio vaccines, and perhaps measles, mumps and rubella vaccines. These vaccines provide lifetime immunity, whereas a tetanus vaccine, which is a bacterin, may not last for a lifetime.

Why Intranasal Bordetella Vaccines Are Better Than the Injectable Form Dr. Becker: I asked Dr. Dodds to talk about kennel cough (bordetella) vaccines. There is the injectable form and the intranasal form. An animal can receive one of these vaccines and immediately be infected with kennel cough. 'Sterile' (Lifetime) Immunity versus Short-lived Immunity Dr. Dodds: Upper respiratory virus vaccines are not 100 percent effective, and in fact, I just received some information stating they are only about 70 percent effective. But there are home and commercial boarding facilities run by people who are really concerned about their own liability, even when the risk is minimal. Some insist on bordetella vaccines every six months. In those cases, the vaccine used should be intranasal. Dr. Becker: I asked Dr. Dodds her opinion of the injectable bordetella vaccine. Does she ever recommend it? She replied that she would not, because the intranasal form contains interferon, which provides partial cross-protection against other upper respiratory viruses.

Dr. Dodds: IFA is something she’s actually quite proud of because back in the late 1990s, she helped develop a similar test and published her findings. In 2000, Dr. Dodds and Dr. Lisa Twark published a very large study of about 1,500 animals, comparing HAI and SN with the new IFA test. The IFA test measures immunity in much the same way tests detect presence of disease. But as Dr. Dodds explains, vaccine titer levels are typically much lower than disease levels. She likes the IFA test because it simulates what happens with a natural infection – determining how well an animal is protected using the same methodology. At the major diagnostics lab that runs IFA tests, a “yes” answer to the question of whether an animal is protected actually means the animal is well protected. If a pet isn’t protected according to an IFA test, no question about it, you need to revaccinate except in the case of dogs that have experienced prior adverse vaccine reactions or non-responders – animals that are genetically non- or lowresponders to vaccinations, as they simply will not acquire effective immunity to a certain disease no matter how many times they are vaccinated. Dr. Becker: Regarding ELISA tests, in my own practice I’ve used them, and noted that some animals show no notable protection against distemper. But when I recheck them with the IFA test, they are protected. This is confusing, and I asked Dr. Dodds about it. Dr. Dodds: At her lab, Hemopet, they do their own in-house laboratory titer testing. And they use ELISA technology. If they get a negative on a test – and it’s almost always for distemper – they send it out for an IFA confirmation test. They then provide both sets of results to the animal’s veterinarian so he or she can use professional judgment and case history to decide whether or not to re-vaccinate.

On a side note, the intranasal bordetella vaccine should never be given as an injectable, and the injectable form should never be administered as an intranasal vaccine. Dr. Dodds said recently a Rottweiler received a bordetella vaccine administered incorrectly and acquired acute hemolytic anemia.

Dr. Dodds explains that she’s not overly worried about a low distemper titer unless the pet is around wildlife. She does worry about parvo. If a parvo titer comes back negative on an ELISA and positive on an IFA, again, the results go to the animal’s vet so he or she can make the judgment call. But Dr. Dodds does discourage vets from delivering combination vaccines and recommends instead a single parvovirus vaccine booster. Single-agent vaccines are significantly less stressful to the body immunologically

Different Types of Titer Tests and the Potential for Conflicting Results

Maternal Immunity: What Is It? Why Is It Important? How Long Does it Last?

Dr. Becker: I asked Dr. Dodds to discuss hemagglutination inhibition, or HAI, because it is a common method some labs use to run titer tests.

Dr. Becker: I asked Dr. Dodds to talk about situations where there is potentially some lingering maternal antibody in a young pet, meaning the puppy is still protected, or partially so, by its mother’s antibodies.

Dr. Dodds: HAI is the gold standard for measuring immunity to, for example, parvo. It’s the original technique that has been mostly replaced in today’s clinical labs with the more efficient enzymelinked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) on serum. ELISA tests are quicker and there are very good ones available. The parallel to HAI is serum neutralization, SN. It’s considered the gold standard for the canine distemper virus. But again, ELISA tests have replaced SN in most labs because the process is cumbersome, and it is also more costly. The ELISA assays have recently been shown in a refereed paper to give equivalent results to HAI and SN. Dr. Becker: Please discuss another technique called IFA, or immunofluorescence antibody technology. How does it fit into the titering picture? PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

Dr. Dodds: Maternal antibodies are what the mother imparts to her litter via the placenta during fetal development – this accounts for up to 10 to 15 percent – and the rest comes from the colostrum in her milk. When the pups nurse, they receive maternal antibodies. How long those will last depends on how high the mother’s antibody titer was while she was pregnant. Maternal antibodies are usually gone by the time a puppy or kitten is 16 weeks of age, but they start to drop off around 8 to 10 weeks. So there is a “window of vulnerability” between, say, 10 and 16 weeks when young animals are not completely protected. Our solution for that is to vaccinate earlier, which temporarily suppresses the maternal immunity that is present. But, the animals

15 DECEMBER 2014 13

become more vulnerable for those few days – from about 3 to 7 days – after a vaccination at 7 or 10 weeks, for example. At the same time, the maternal antibodies are waning. It’s not ideal to suppress the maternal antibodies via vaccination, but it’s also not prudent to wait until they’ve dropped off entirely. So it’s a bit of a catch-22. That’s why it’s important that young pets not be out at dog parks or other locations where potentially infected animals could be. Puppies should be well immunized before they are allowed to venture out into the world. Titering from three to four weeks after the last puppy shot is a good opportunity to determine if the vaccinations actually worked to immunize the animal. Titers shouldn’t be done before 16 weeks, because if you titer earlier, you can pick up some of that waning maternal immunity which will eventually be gone.

Rabies Vaccines and the Exciting Work of the Rabies Challenge Fund Dr. Becker: Moving on to the rabies vaccine, depending on where you live, it may be approved for dogs as young as three or four months old. This particular vaccine is risky in terms of its reactivity, because it contains a potent amount of inactivated (killed) rabies virus plus strong adjuvants to help stimulate the immune response. Veterinarians often postpone the rabies vaccine until a pet is six months old to give the body more time to develop. I asked Dr. Dodds to talk about the duration of immunity of rabies vaccines, which are made from killed rabies virus. Dr. Dodds: Some people believe modified-live rabies vaccines are still in use, but they are not. Years ago, there was a modified-live rabies formula for cats, and it did occasionally mutate and produce rabies. But today there are no modified-live rabies vaccines in use. However, the killed-virus rabies vaccine is extremely potent and should not be administered earlier than necessary. Even though rabies vaccine package labels say it can be given at 12 weeks, it should not be given before 16 weeks. As to the question of how long rabies vaccines last, according to titer tests, antibodies can remain in an animal’s blood for seven to nine years, and perhaps longer. But again, the question is: are those pets truly protected against the disease? The Rabies Challenge Fund recently completed year five of its five and seven-year trials to determine how long the rabies vaccine lasts. They are into year six now. The animals used in the study are living in a kennel breeding facility environment. According to antibody titers on the study animals, at year three after vaccination they all showed good immunity. At year four they showed measurable immunity, but by year 5, some of the animals no longer had measurable rabies titers. Dr. Becker: Dr. Dodds and Dr. Ron Schultz conducted something called a vaccinal challenge (rabies revaccination) that showed the animals all had immune memory cells that responded by producing good rabies antibody titers, even though some of the animals had titers below the 0.1 international units per milliliter level deemed by the CDC to be adequate to protect a person against rabies. So Dr. Dodds and Dr. Schultz believe that even five years post-vaccination, the animals in the study have maintained good immune memory to protect them against rabies should they be exposed.

14 6

DECEMBER 2014

What’s lovely about all this is that the animal body is still capable of mounting a response, from immune memory, to the virus. The body innately knows what to do. Dr. Dodds: To clarify that even though we know immune memory response was boosted in the animals in the study, it doesn’t mean the USDA or individual states will accept extending the length between rabies booster vaccinations. The Rabies Challenge Fund hasn’t reached that stage in the process yet. They are still developing data that, quite frankly, many people might not want to see published, and that data is being gathered from canine titers rather than trying to extrapolate data from human titer studies to canines. How You Can Help The Rabies Challenge Fund study is the first of its kind. It’s seven years of research, data collection, and publishing the results. They are in year six, and have year seven still to go. The project depends on grassroots gifts for funding the costs of conducting the requisite vaccine trials. None of the money collected by the Rabies Challenge Fund goes to Dr. Dodds, Dr. Schultz, Kris Christine, or others working on their behalf. No salaries or other overhead is involved with the exception of expenses for care of the study animals. Dr. Dodds’ staff at Hemopet administers the fund from their offices in Southern California, and all their time and resources are donated. Extending the length of time between rabies vaccinations, thereby reducing the total number of vaccines animals receive during their lifetime, will be a huge benefit to the health and well being of family pets across the globe. Gathering serial serum rabies titer data during the full course of the study also provides a new database to help veterinarians and dog licensing authorities assess exposure risk and levels of protection, especially for those dogs that cannot safely or should not receive a rabies booster. Dr. Jean Dodds received the D.V.M. degree with honors in 1964 from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Toronto. In 1965, she accepted a position as a Research Scientist with the New York State Health Department. She began comparative studies of animals with inherited and acquired bleeding diseases. Eventually, her position culminated as Chief, Laboratory of Hematology, Wadsworth Center. In 1980, she also became Executive Director, New York State Council on Human Blood and Transfusion Services. This work continued full-time until 1986 when she moved to Southern California to establish Hemopet, the first nonprofit national blood bank for animals. The diagnostic division of Hemopet, Hemolife, provides the most advanced comprehensive diagnostic profiles for identifying canine thyroid disease, performs titer testing, as well as a wide range of other diagnostic services. Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder of dogs. More than 80% of cases result from autoimmune thyroiditis, the heritable autoimmune disease that progressively destroys the thyroid gland. Classical clinical signs of hypothyroidism only appear once more than 70% of the gland is destroyed. Accurate diagnosis may be difficult because thyroid dysfunction produces a wide range of clinical signs, many of which are subtle and mimic those of other causes. Dr. Dodds also assisted Antech Diagnostics to establish its IFA testing method (published in JAVMA 2000) and with its thyroid testing antibody profiles. Dr. Dodds is very well-known for her minimum vaccine protocols and as CoTrustee of The Rabies Challenge Fund. Dr. Dodds co-authored The Canine Thyroid Epidemic: Answers You Need for Your Dog, which was rewarded the Dog Writers Association of America, Best Care and Health Book for 2011 and the Eukanuba Maxwell Canine Health Award. Her second book, Nutrigenomics: Foods that Heal your Dog, was published in 2013. In 2011, Dr. Dodds released NutriScan, a food sensitivity and intolerance diagnostic test for dogs, testing for twenty of the most commonly ingested foods

Highlights of the PWDCC Board Minutes September 9, 2014, 8pm EST Present: Sharon Lapstra, ON Jennifer Byers, PQ Roslyn Eskind, ON (guest) Deirdre Hall, ON Sue Hopkins Michelle Jackson, ON Mavis McClintock, BC Absent: Patti McDonald, ON Pat Vokes, ON Andy Gamache, AB Motion by Sharon to accept the minutes of the August 12th 2014 PWDCC meeting. Deirdre seconds the motion. Approved. Business arising from Minutes 2014 PWDCC National Specialty The National Specialty was held in Ontario Aug 9th 2014 weekend. Sharon was pleased with the Specialty. Feedback from the participants included comments that the judges and prizes were great. The luncheon went well as thirty people purchased tickets. Financial Update This topic is tabled until the October 2014 meeting. Summer Water Activities Update Ontario Water Trial Sharon asked that an update be given in October. Alberta Water Trial The Alberta Water Trial was cancelled due to unsafe water conditions. More of an update will be given in October. Membership Committee Report Report from the committee chair, Deirdre: The membership committee had a meeting to discuss the puppy membership program and ideas to encourage breeders to sign up puppy members. One suggestion was that the club could possibly provide incentives such as discount on membership for the following year. The committee is looking for any ideas/suggestions that the club could provide to improve the blast that goes out to the puppy people when contacted to renew to full membership to retain them. The British Columbia Club is closing and they have generously turned over their funds to PWDCC Rescue. They presently have 50 members who are often not PWDCC members. It was primarily a social club for PWD owners. What can the PWDCC do to entice these members to join? An obstacle is the geographic distance from Ontario where most activities are held. The BC members do not feel there is a benefit to joining the PWDCC. They used Facebook to organize their own local events such as pet walks and picnics. They published a quarterly newsletter targeting pet puppy people with informative articles geared to dog ownership, training, recipes, etc. Perhaps The Waterlog could expand on these types of articles. A volunteer was asked for to coordinate this type of content. Another suggestion was to have board members lead pet events in their areas. Each province could then report to an event coordinator. On the website it might be nice to have a page just for these events and information on resources where dog owners can get assistance, recipes or where to ask questions should the members be having different problems, etc.

PWDCC Waterlog www.pwdcc.org

The committee stated that some breeders do not support the New Puppy Introductory Offer because it is a waste of their money to pay for the puppy members if these puppy members find no value in renewing their membership. Rather than an optional program, this might be mandatory for breeders who wish to participate in the Breeder/Litter Listing web page. It was suggested that directors attending the PWDCA National Specialty canvas their American colleagues for ideas to increase and retain members. Mavis stated that she does ask all her puppy people if they want to join the national club. Our club information is available online. She hosts events at her house with as many as 30 people but it is difficult to get people interested. Their Facebook page was a closed page, but open to nonmembers. An idea was put forward to organize a fundraising “walk for Rescue” event. This event could be posted on the website and/or Facebook page. This would probably have good support from members and others. Other ideas: • It might be worthwhile to let breeders sign up puppy people for free, if people will join next year. • Sue has a distribution list of all BC members. She will blast them with PWDCC membership information. • And we should encourage BC breeders to promote the PWDCC. • Provide grooming seminars and other dog ownership seminars (introduction to Water work, Agility, CGN, health, nutrition, etc.) for people across the country to assist members with new puppies. A groomer in BC volunteered to give the course. These activities could be promoted on the club Facebook page and website. To facilitate this program a central director with regional directors taking the lead would be necessary.

New Business Breeders List, Recommended Breeding Policy and Fund Raising Activities Sharon suggested that the Club eliminate the breeders list on the website and replace it with an Available Puppies list. The breeders could post their litters and pay a fee for this advertising. The Club would post the breeders’ contact information, the name of the sire and dam and their corresponding health data. Presently, a breeder can pay the breeder membership fee and their name, contact information is posted on the PWDCC website breeder contact list for the year. There is no guarantee that the breeders are doing the recommended health testing as that is only required when a litter was posted. This change will remove the club from a policing role. The health standards will be reviewed and standardized to harmonize with the PWDCA as so much of breeding activity is with American dogs. Directors should be prepared to continue this discussion in October. Motion to adjourn by Sue, Sharon seconded. Approved. The next PWDCC board meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 14th, 2014.

October 14, 2014, 8pm EST Present: Sharon Lapstra, ON Sue Hopkins, BC Jennifer Byers, PQ; Michelle Jackson, ON Pat Vokes, ON Deirdre Hall, ON Andy Gamache, Prairies Roslyn Eskind (guest) Patti McDonald, ON

Sharon volunteered to be the director of events for the first year. She would like the committee to meet again and focus on event activities. There is a template of past events in Ontario such as rally demos/grooming/fun day things. The Club could start with the list already in place.

Absent: Mavis McClintock, BC

The committee will continue to work on membership in general, the New Puppy Introductory Offer program, and will contact breeders individually to see why they are not using the program.

Business arriving from the minutes Our basket donation to the PWDCA Specialty was very appreciated. It was put together by Catherine Gadd and it was beautiful.

Directors have been sent copies of the CKC stud dog directory detailing every litter and dog registered in 2013. There are many new breeders who do not belong to the club. The PWDCC must continue to educate the public, explain the possible perils a buyer can encounter. Breeders should have informative websites that provides information on health, temperament and what a good breeder provides in after care and support.

Membership Committee Meeting was delayed until we received the 2013 CKC Stud Book. Very interesting as it demonstrates what is happening with the breed. And it could be helpful in our club efforts, and to increase membership.

Rescue Update Michelle (PWDCC Rescue Coordinator) received five adoption application forms in the month of August. There was a call from a family inquiring about the breed, where to find breeder names and more information about the rescue program. Waterlog Advertising Update It was suggested that board members assist with selling commercial advertising for the Waterlog, approaching vets/dog food companies/on-line supply companies/breeders, etc. There is a change in the fees to advertise in The Waterlog, essentially half of the print cost as the magazine is now produced digitally only.

Minutes from the last meeting, September 9, 2014: last page can we remove “There are other ways to make…” amend the minutes and redistribute. Motion to accept the minutes by Jennifer, seconded by Deirdre. Approved.

BC Club Rescue Donation $3,111.43 has been received. The BC club specifically wants us to use these funds for rescue. Can we track this money separately and not revert it to the general club funds after the two years as per our club policy? The club keeps discrete ledgers for specific categories, rescue is one of them, but after two years, the funds are moved to the operating fund for the club. This isn’t part of the bylaws, it’s just Policy which is specified on the membership forms, it is not in Policy and Procedures manual. The board could determine a different way to manage these funds. Perhaps we could make a special policy for PWDCC Rescue, that the funds raised remain available at all times.

Report of the Treasurer There was no treasurer update.

DECEMBER 2014 15

Motion that funds designated for Rescue be held separately on the club Balance Sheet and not revert to general operation funds after two years, made by Michelle, seconded by Jennifer. Approved. Rescue Fundraising Event Sharon will coordinate this event. We’ll find out who is interested in a Walk/Bike/Run event. We’ll have sponsorship sheets to send out. We should have it on one day. We’ll look at online page for registering. Motion to have a PWDCC National Rescue Walk/Bike/Run event on Saturday May 30 to support PWDCC Rescue, made by Jennifer, seconded by Sue. Approved.

Deirdre will post the litter after verifying the current health testing on the sire and dam. The breeder will send the Available Puppies Form to Deirdre with their information and the litter will be posted 30 days prior to the litter due date. Booster at the Elora Kennel Club Show Motion by Sharon that the club supports a Booster at the Elora KC on December 27-29, 2014 with Danik Dancause as our judge, seconded by Jennifer. Approved. 2014 PWDCC National Specialty Still missing some expenses tabled to next meeting. Report of PWDCC Treasurer

Our goal is to at least double the amount of funds available for Rescue, at least $3,000.00. It would be great if it was an annual event, it could be in support of other club activities also depending on the amounts raised. It can be advertised on the club website, Facebook, on breeders’ pages. We can send emails to all our puppy people to invite them to come.

PWDCOntario Merchandise PWDCA Specialty sales were robust $2,260.43 realized. Inventory will have to be done, hopefully before our next meeting.

Breeder listing Strategy to replace the Breeder List with an Available Puppy List. The recommended health testing results for each litter will be posted along with the breeder’s contact info. We should mirror what the PWDCA recommends. The original list supported PWDCC Rescue. There are breeders on the list who don’t support health testing or support the club programs. We can raise money for rescue in other ways.

Thanks to Cathy Gadd for putting up the judge at her home, and paid his entrance fees, to Patti McDonald who donated a night for the judge, and stored the boats June-August. Water donated by Jen and Colin McMechan, Cathy’s daughter Jen helped with running the trial also.

Discussion on testing criteria. For instance the PWDCA requires PRA testing on both parents, in part, for record keeping of disease penetration in the population. Hips: FCI accepted at 12 months, OFA hips accepted at 24 months for final evaluation. IC13 testing is optional, should we have at least one parent tested normal? The PWDCA has this as an optional test. Motion that the PWDCC accept for breeding pairs the following recommended health testing moved by Deirdre: Both parents individually tested for Hips (OFA final certification at at least 24 months of Excellent, Good or Fair or FCI at at least 12 months, A,B or C, OVC pass grandfathered) Optigen prcd-PRA, yearly OFA ECR/CERF (eyes) At least one parent tested normal for GM-1, JDCM, IC13 CHIC clear by parentage designation for prcd-PRA, GM-1, or JDCM in place of individually tested dogs

Water Trial loss includes fencing of $195.00 was $447.00, overall $640.39 profit in 2014 for PWDCOntario water events.

Next meeting scheduled for November 11, 2014, 8pm EST. Motion to adjourn made by Pat, seconded by Jennifer. Approved.

Basket for PWDCA Specialty Expenses of $107.92, and included a ball cap/ 2 t-shirts, total cost $135.04 $21,216.27 $1,971.78 $19,244.29 $246.24 $3,111.43 120 22 63 12

Report from Andy on the Alberta Water Trial Cancellation There is a problem with algae in Alberta, all the lakes are tested. Wizard Lake has been historically a pretty clean lake, however, for next year the committee is looking for another venue, and running the trial earlier or later is problematic for training and conflicts with other events. Trying to find a venue not more than 4 hours away from Calgary or Edmonton. Andy was reminded that any venue must have commercial insurance as private sites with residential insurance won’t cover the club’s liability.

Seconded by Jennifer. Pat Vokes and Sue Hopkins abstain. All others in favour Patti, Sharon, Jennifer, Andy, Deirdre, Michelle.

Water Trial expenses in Alberta will be set up as a pre-paid item to be moved over to 2015 when a trial is held. Judge’s gift and flight $513.36.

Motion by Sharon to discontinue the PWDCC Breeders’ List effective January 1, 2015 to be replaced with the PWDCC Available Puppies List. A breeder can post a litter with breeder contact information, link to breeder web site, with recommended health testing of the dam and sire posted. The cost is $20.00 per litter. There is no limit to the number of litters posted by a breeder each year. A breeder must be a PWDCC member in good standing for at least one year to participate in the Available Puppies listing, seconded by Michelle. Approved.

New Business Canine Colours workshop proposed by PWDCOntario is now off the table. The request to hold an event was sent by email to Sharon/Roslyn about one month before the scheduled event to get board approval and promote the event. There is an established process for event planning, events are planned at the beginning of the year, sent to the board for approval, budgets are then submitted. The timeframe for promotion, posting to websites, Facebook etc. was not enough to get good support for the event to ensure a successful turnout. There should be at least 60 days lead time for club events.

DECEMBER 2014

New board for 2015-2017 Board terms are 2 years, starting in January, but a board member can serve for a maximum of 6 years concurrently. A slate for the new term should be proposed by the nominating committee of 3 members, with one board member as part of this committee. Section iv of the club bylaws. Each board member will consider their further participation.

Motion by Pat, seconded by Andy to make a Donation to Laurel Creek of $100.00. Approved.

Roslyn Eskind Roslyn has been attending board meetings and doing essentially secretarial functions such as blasts to membership, posting on Facebook, the club event listing, updating the Policy and Procedures manual and feels it’s time to step back and hand off these duties. The club web site has a relatively easy backend to make updates. Roslyn will continue to do the Waterlog, that is perhaps a longer term project to transition. Is there anyone who’d like to volunteer? Sharon will enquire if anyone is interested.

ly, undoing your hard work. Consider including with your party invitation a brief note about helping you train your dog. For example, ‘Five Tips to Help Barley Stay on Santa’s Nice List’ might ask your guests to pay attention to Barley only when all four paws are on the floor, not feed him from the table, etc. Inviting guests into your training, as well as in to the party, can serve a number of functions, including teaching your dog that new people coming into the house means ‘good things happen’ for the dog. This approach helps prevent a fear of guests entering the home.

When a dog learns that an open door predicts treats on the ground, he is less likely to bolt out the door or jump on your guests. If your dog likes jumping on people as they enter your home, consider leaving some kibble in the mailbox and asking your guests to drop a few pieces on the floor as they enter – to help Barley learn to seek reinforcement ‘down low’ when greeting new people. When a dog learns that an open door predicts treats on the ground, he is less likely to bolt out the door or jump on your guests. This strategy buys you ‘clickable moments’ where you reward the behaviors you like, such as ‘four on the floor’ or ‘sit to greet’. It also allows any guest who would like to greet your dog the opportunity to bend down to his level to greet him. The dog gets the reinforcement he wants (attention) in the position you’d like (down low on the floor, all four paws on the ground).

Observe and be ready to reward! Whenever possible, have one family member welcome guests into the house and another family member observe and work with the dog. Your dog should always be under direct supervision; you or someone you trust should be watching at all times. There are two reasons for this careful observation: 1) to prevent the dog from rehearsing unwanted behaviors (counter-surfing and steal-

Parties can be an unexpected way to practice basic skills with distractions! Here are some examples: Welcoming people at the door is an excellent opportunity to practice “sit” with duration and distractions. For friendly dogs, reward those behaviors not with a treat, but by providing the opportunity to greet and meet a new friend! Ask your dog to ‘sit,’ and once your guests are safely in the house, release your dog to "go say hi!" If you'd prefer to avoid the door area altogether, before the party train the dog so that the doorbell becomes a cue to run to a mat or crate and settle.

Dinner time! If you are planning a formal dinner party, use everyday mealtime to teach your dog to settle on a mat away from the table, an important life skill for dogs that keeps them out of all kinds of trouble. If your dog is lying politely on his mat, he cannot be jumping on guests, snatching food from the table, or begging.

human behavior (many people try to hug or pat dogs on the top of the head, neither of which behavior is generally welcomed by dogs, especially from strangers), AND it teaches a dog to greet without jumping, to greet with ‘four on the floor’. I also use hand targeting to control a dog’s movement. Do you see your dog approaching the table as if he wants to countersurf? Immediately give a hand target cue to get him away from the food, and then have him settle on a mat. Do you need to walk by that beautiful table setting to let your dog out for a potty break? Place your hand by your hip, give the ‘follow’ cue, and voilà, an automatic heel past the distraction of the turkey.

Manners make all merry!
