ThePresident’sLetter Another summer has come and gone and as we usher in the fall it is a good time to reflect on our accomplishments and celebrate our successes! This summer witnessed a successful National Specialty with Judge Luis Pinto Teixeira and Sweepstakes Judge Janis Watts with a total entry of 68. It was great to see some of our fellow American breeders support our event. Special thanks to everyone who donated funds for trophy sponsorship and items to the silent auction. All the dogs were gorgeous and thankfully, the weather co-operated. MBIS BISS Am/Can GCH Claircreek Lusitano Oceano Atlantico was our Best of Breed Winner. Oceano is owned and bred by Donna Gottdenker. Best of Opposite was MBIS BISS Can CH Del Sur’s How Now bred by Lana Woodburn and owned by Mari and Sara Szauerzopf. More results from the Specialty are noted later in this publication.

packages! Two packages were at the Camp Lael Trial in June and two at our trial. Super congrats to Pat and Roy. Special thanks to all participants who travelled a long distance to attend our trial. The dogs were a lot of fun and at times, quite entertaining. Thanks to everyone who volunteered time, energy and resources to make this event a success.

Many thanks to Catherine Gadd and her team for a very successful water trial held in Waterloo, Ontario with Judge Chuck Robinson on August 23-24. Again, June Murdoch stole the show with Sula achieving Working Water Dog on a first attempt, and repeating on Sunday, what a team! Then we were wowed by Pat Vokes and Kelby who completed all four of the new Versatility

Again, special thanks to all of our valuable volunteers. Our club could not do what we do without you. Have a safe and happy fall season!

Unfortunately, the Alberta Water Trial was cancelled this year due to unsafe water conditions. Let’s hope that the environment co-operates next summer. The Board continues to address issues related to club sustainability, membership growth and resource development. Please feel free to forward any issues or concerns you may have for board consideration. We meet the second Tuesday of every month.

A very sincere thank yyou to the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada, for inviting me to judge Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes at your National Specialty. As a judge, a long time breeder:, along with a thirty year love affair with this breed, I consider it an honor to have had the privilege to judge at this show. There is something very special about Sweepstakes as it brings together the young PWDs who represent the future of our breed, along with our magnificent Veterans who have played significant roles in the current status of our breed’s success.

PWDCOntario Water Trial

Saturday August 23, 2014

Courier Water Dog (CWD)

Laurel Creek Conservation Area, Waterloo, ON Judge Chuck Robinson

Junior Water Dog (JWC)

The PWDCOntario Branch water trials. held at Laurel Creek Conservation Area in Waterloo August 23 and 24. were once again a most successful and enjoyable event. A perfect summer weekend with warm weather and water, new friends and old. There were a total of 28 teams from Ontario and one very impressive team who flew in to compete from Edmonton. We had an outstanding pass rate especially at the Apprentice and Working level. Everyone appreciated our judge Charles Robinson, from Atlanta, Georgia, for his calm manner, encouraging words and useful training tips. A big thank you to the dedicated 2014 trial committee Patti McDonald, Lorraine Wilson, Kathy Hick, Pat Vokes, Roy Vokes and Roslyn Eskind and to all our volunteers who worked so hard over the two days. Without your help the weekend would not have been as successful or enjoyable. Sadly the winter is drawing near and it is a long time until next summer but plans are already in the works due to your requests for additional water workshops. The many dogs who passed Apprentice and Working this summer are ready to move up. We will be holding an advanced camp for the Working and Courier levels in early June at Laurel Creek. As soon as we have confirmed the day a memo will be sent out so that you can "save the date." Thank you to all of you who attended and competed this summer at Laurel Creek. Even if you did not qualify in your level you are all winners.... the fact that you are in the water with your dogs having fun is what water work is all about. Congratulations on giving your dog the chance to show you he can do the work that is his heritage. Looking forward to seeing you all again in the water next summer. Catherine Gadd Chair, PWDCOntario, 2014 Water Trial Chair

From our Judge I would like to thank the members of the PWDCC for inviting me to judge the 2014 water trial. I judged the first trial, 11 years ago. This was a new water trial site for me and I must say it was fantastic. The organization and running of this trial was flawless. The teams that I judged were very prepared for completion and were reflected by the very impressive pass rate. The Versatility dogs of Canada were spectacular and definitely are a role model for all PWD’s to aspire to. Once again thank you for the opportunity to judge and celebrate our PWDs, and visit with so many friends.

Roslyn explained that she is making good progress with the planning of the National Specialty. The closing date for registration is July 23rd. Trophy donations stand at $1,485.00. There are no Sweepstakes donations yet and some classes are missing donations but all the big prizes are taken care of. Roslyn has sent out another blast to the membership asking for support. The Alberta Club is donating $200.00.

The intent was to make the show simple and save dollars this year. It was agreed that the Club put the existing banner to use. Everyone agreed. Sharon will coordinate the volunteers. The start time is 10am. Report of the Treasurer Bank Balance Pay Pal owing Balance Pay Pal Balance

There are: 119 members 21 new members 44 puppy members 12 breeder: members Summer Water Activities Update Ontario Water Trial Pat and Patti stated that there are 10-11 dogs registered on the Saturday and 14 dogs registered on the Sunday. It was suggested that another blast to membership be sent as a reminder to register. This blast should be sent out 2 weeks prior to the cut-off date of Aug 5th. Alberta Water Trial The Alberta water trial is ready to go. The water seminar was greatly supported with 14 dogs at all levels. Membership The Club requires a strategy to increase breeder: and regular membership. There are five breeder:s presently using the puppy program. Breeder:s should become members and support the club. Andy stated that it is tough to attract new members. In Alberta they have conducted seminars and rally obedience in the past. Pat sent an email to 42 former members reminding them that their membership had expired and to please renew. As a result of the reminder, three people renewed. A number of people that did not renew were members from the puppy program. It was identified that most Club activities are in Ontario. Maybe the Club should consider offering Ontario seminars on topics such as grooming, training and ask the Ontario Branch to assist. The Land Water Training Event and Water Trials attract new people. This topic of discussion, to increase and maintain membership, will be tabled until the August meeting.Sue suggested using a Facebook page for posting events in local areas for activities such as walks; swims; picnics; long hikes that would be open to members only Sharon suggested that a committee is required to review all the options. Breeder: program There was discussion on minor changes to the breeder: program. The policy for 2014 updates are on the Club website. There is a section that recommends health testing and health stats to be published on the web-page. Rescue Update No update

Luncheon: there are nine people registered for the luncheon. July 23rd is the cut-off date. We are planning for twenty-five people.

New Business Club Policy and Procedures updates were circulated in May and are posted on the National Web-site.

The tent is rented. The Club will pay 1/3 of the cost ($236) and Debra Graffman will be paying the remainder.

Motion Pat made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Andy seconds the motion. Approved.

The booster is Sunday, August 10th. Roslyn suggested that the Club should donate prizes for the booster. We could use club merchandise. If supplies/ inventory are taken please let Pat know.

The next PWDCC board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug 12th, 2014.

Summer Water Activities Update

Present: Sharon Lapstra, ON Pat Vokes, ON Patti McDonald, ON Jennifer Byers, PQ Roslyn Eskind, ON, guest Deirdre Hall, ON Sue Hopkins Michelle Jackson, ON

Ontario Water Trial Pat and Patti reported: there are 25 dogs registered for Saturday and 28 dogs registered on Sunday. The Club didn’t have to pay for boat rental ($250.00) and one night at the Holiday Inn thanks to Patti who donated the cost. Cathy Gadd is providing one night’s accommodation and meals to the Judge.

Absent: Mavis McClintock, BC Andy Gamache, AB

Alberta Water Trial There was a lack of clarity around the insurance piece. Sharon stated that they are covered with a commercial policy. There are not too many entries but the show is a go. Roslyn was contacted by the secretary from the Alberta club asking questions about the trial material including the new judging sheets.

Motion Deirdre made a motion to accept the minutes of the July 15th 2014 PWDCC meeting. Jennifer seconds the motion. Approved. Business arising from Minutes National Specialty The National Specialty was held in Ontario Aug 9th 2014 weekend. Sharon believes that the National Specialty was a success. The format was great with the Sweeps taking place first followed by the classes. Sharon received good feedback from people. We could have possibly started earlier. Thirty people attended the luncheon. The judges were excellent. Roslyn has worked on several National Specialties and this one she considers a big success. The embroidered towels that were given as prizes were a hit and everyone loved them. All the volunteers worked hard. It was great team work. The booster on Sunday was missed. The club should still receive the income for the dogs that were shown (26 dogs) $104.00. Sharon presented the prizes outside the ring. Specialty income Pat: The income and expenses still need to be invoiced therefore a final tally will be available sometime in September. Some of the income to date includes: Banquet $745.00 Catalogue 145.00 Silent Auction 502.23 Raffle 260.00 Trophy Sponsorships 2,055.00 Catalogue Ads 260.00 Income to date $3,852.23 Receivables outstanding: Entry fee $30 x 39 dogs 25% income of sweepstakes There are more expenses to be received such as the Judge’s hotel and meals, cost to embroider towels, plus CKC recording fees. To date the expenses include: Gibson Trophies: $2,408.97 Judges Air Transportation: 692.62 Luncheon: 635.60 Advertising: 426.93

There may be a few more dogs that might register. Hopefully there will be good weather.

Andy will provide an update in September. The Alberta Water Trial Ad for the Courier didn’t run. Pat will follow up to see if they were billed and if the invoice is to be paid. Membership Sharon identified that there was renewed interest in the PWDCC during the National Specialty among some of the breeder:s. Therefore, it is a good time to develop a strategy to address the membership issues. Need to get breeder:s interested in the Puppy Program and encourage them to sign up their puppy members. Sharon suggested that the Club set up a sub-committee to research and come up with suggestions that would increase membership. Deirdre stated that few puppy members continue on as regular members therefore breeder:s may hesitate in paying for the puppy memberships. Pat stated that she was a puppy member and would not be a part of the Club if a member didn’t purchase the puppy membership for her. Sharon suggested that the committee should contact the breeder:s and discuss the puppy membership with them and encourage them to participate in the program.

Report of the Treasurer $15,174.38 Bank Balance: Outstanding Cheques: $2057.22 Balance $13,117.16 Outstanding cheques are $808.52; $550; $613.00; $85.60 There are: 119 members 21 new members 52 puppy members 12 breeder: members Rescue Update Michelle (Central Region) received six adoption application forms and had three calls from people inquiring about the breed, where to find breeder: names and about the rescue program. Jennifer (Eastern Region) is getting calls from people as well. They are referred to the breeder: list. On the breeder: contact it is an information list only. New Business Sharon will identify dog food folks that will support our club. One raw dog food company has expressed interest in donating items for our treat bags. Sharon’s goal is to try and have companies donate good quality treats, etc. Sharon will try and get popup tents to use at Water Trials. Sharon will work on corporate sponsorship for the Waterlog. Presently, the ads cost $110 for a full page colour ad. There are four Waterlog issues per year. There was discussion that the Club may look at charging different prices for the ads. We still pay for the cost of the web-site. Roslyn to review what a fair ad cost would be. She will present to the club next month. Sharon suggested that board member/breeder:s should have business card ads. Pat will send the bank reconciled total to Sharon prior to the next meeting but she will be absent. Motion Pattie made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Pat seconds the motion. Approved. The next PWDCC board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept 9th, 2014.

Four people volunteered for the committee: Deirdre, Patti, Jennifer and Sue. Deirdre will lead the committee. Sharon suggested that the committee commit to four scheduled meeting and come up with a strategy and present it to the board by October 2014. They will discuss club membership only and the Puppy Introduction Program as it pertains to the breeder:s. This will hopefully keep the membership stable. Roslyn stated that membership renewal reminders must be sent out in October. If incentives and changes are made to the program then the strategy from the committee should be presented by end of October. Do we make the Introduction Program mandatory? If we work on getting the breeder:s more involved in the club then possibly making the program mandatory may be accepted more readily. Roslyn stated that every breeder: in the club must be contacted by the committee to make the changes effective. Sue asked which breeder:s the committee should contact. It will be all the breeder:s even the ones that are not on the PWDCC list. The active and inactive list of breeder:s is on the member website. Deirdre will send the committee members the list of members that are breeder:s. Even if one percent of puppy members join as regular members the club would increase membership. Deirdre will send the list out this week.
