ThePresidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sLetter Well another great summer come and gone. So many wonderful PWD activities to talk about! The water trial in Ontario was a great success with many dogs and handlers achieving their goals. Many thanks to Catherine Gadd for her continued commitment to this program. Also thanks to our Judge Sarah Kahn who challenged our teams to think on their feet! Again, special thanks to Patti McDonald for her patience as trial secretary. The water trial in Alberta was equally successful this year. Thankfully the weather and environment co-operated so no cancellations were necessary. Amanda Ford was the esteemed judged and several participants and dogs met their goals. Thank you everyone for participating in these events and volunteering your valuable time to make them a success. International events included the U.S. National Specialty held in Frankenmuth, Michigan Aug. 1-7. Many Canadian attended this venue participating the events including obedience, agility, water trials and conformation. I am very proud of our small breed club to have done so well in all venues. Special congrats to Tammy Hibberson for her achievement as Super Dog 2015! Starting on page 4 for Canadian achievements!!

Next year we look forward to our 2016 PWDCC National Specialty which will be held at the Alberta Kennel Club show in Calgary, Alberta. Please check the next Waterlog for a complete listing of judges, events, dates. All at the present time, is pending CKC approval. We hope to see as many members there as possible. Tracy Brown of the Alberta Club will be our Specialty chair. Volunteers are greatly appreciated. Please let us know if you are interested in volunteering for this Specialty. I would like to welcome Tracy Brown to our Board of Directors. Tracy will fill the role of our Communications Secretary, stepping in for Tara Cooper-Leith who resigned due to other commitments in her life. Thank you Tara for getting our Facebook page up and running and increasing our likes significantly over the past 8 months. To understand how this event works:

“It’s not having what you want, It’s wanting what you’ve got”

SUPERDOG is a very special honour awarded at the end of the PWDCA National Specialty. This honour recognizes overall versatility of the Portuguese Water Dog by requiring participation in a variety of events. It rewards capabilities and efforts of the individual PWD who competes in three or more events and accumulates the most overall points for placements and qualifying performance. To be eligible for SUPERDOG, dogs must be entered and compete in at least three of the six area of competition: Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Water, Rally, and Tracking (if offered).

Dogs at all levels can compete and be recognized for their achievements and their versatility as there is graduated scoring.

A new record set at this year's Specialty! The Super Dog event this year was won by Tammy Hibberson and her dog Quinta! (co-bred/co-owned with Leslie McCracken). Tammy is not new to the venue of SUPERDOG and is an extraordinary trainer! In 2013, Tammy claimed the SUPERDOG award with her first PWD, Riglee and it was in 2010 Tammy and Alee, Quinta's Mom, earned the title!!

A few years ago, a wise training friend provided me with some sage advice about becoming the type of handler my dog needs. Instead of a focus on choosing the perfect dog or trying to change my current dog into my ideal, the challenge was to become the perfect handler for the temperament, skills and pre-dispositions of the dogs I currently own and train. Rather than a focus on outcomes like passing, qualifying or winning at various competitions, I’m focussed on what I can learn from an experience to make me a better partner for my dog. This change in focus has resulted in more pleasurable training and trialing experiences for me. My belief is that it is the owner/trainer’s responsibility to notice and build upon the strengths and positive characteristics presented by a particular dog. A PWD owner can then use those positive qualities to build a relationship with his/her dog and can find the joy in daily training and life with a PWD. Assessing Quinta, I knew she had the stamina to train for extended periods and she had a strong desire to play and be with me. I didn’t try to mold Quinta into a dog she clearly would never be. Instead, I built on what she is. I used Quinta’s strengths and the characteristics I appreciate in her to build a training and conditioning program for her that led us to earning the Superdog title at this year’s PWDCA National Specialty in Frankenmuth, Michigan. It was about finding training partners and resources we both enjoyed and about celebrating our moments together along the path to a goal I felt inspired to attain. My Superdog quest was about enjoying every moment (well, maybe there have been a few less than precious moments with Quinta over the last three years) with this very special dog. Each dog is special so look for those qualities you love and appreciate in your dog (and in yourself) then acknowledge and celebrate them. Those qualities are what make our Portuguese Water Dogs so special, amazing and even Super!

In order to assist the efforts concerning Bailey a Motion by Mavis to cover the cost of retraining ($300.00), seconded by Sue. Approved.
